Tonight kicks off this week’s We Fight Back UTube Song-Fest sorta kinda contest.
The rules are pretty simple.
1. Have fun. This is, after all, Late Late Nite.
2. Songs can be submitted that protest both current and past events and/or causes. If you have a favorite, just add the link to a comment in the Late Nite threads tonight or tomorrow night. Comments will be accepted until noon (Pacific Time) on Thursday, December 13th. In case of duplicate submissions, the first pup to submit the video (as determined by the comment time stamp) will be the person considered to have submitted it. Only one entry per comment, please, but no limit on the number of submissions.
3. Please list the title of the song with your UTube link. If you are not able to embed links, please type the name of the song along with the link.
4. Eureka Springs and I will go through the songs and will narrow down the list to the Top Ten. Those ten will be linked in Friday’s Late Late Nite post and voting will begin. Pups will be able to vote for their favorite for 24 hours by leaving a comment in Friday’s Late Late Nite thread.
5. Votes will be tabulated and the two (yes, that’s right folks, we get two) winners will be individually front paged on two Late Late Nite: We Fight Back Winner posts. Ample crowing rights will certainly ensue.
6. Have fun.

WooHoo, the wedding dress arriving makes it REAL Suzanne. Any progress on finding the mother-of-the-bride outfit?
One or two nowdays, Fern. But the modern industry pretty much said ‘no you we will NOT play this on anything if you cut this record.’ Only a few major bands got away with protest music, like Green Day. And they manged to make an incredible concept album out of American Idiot. Otherwise? Welcome to popslut, american idol, and boy band radio. Now also including rap and hiphop glam, yet more crap and very little actual protest allowed beyond bragging how rich and how tough you are. Cause that ’sells’.
Can you tell i hate the modern industry just a tad bit? *sigh* I love all these old protest songs that are much older than even i am. But nothing of note comes out of the artists today aside from one or two gems–if they’re lucky and carry enough clout.
What a combo!
…just fell down the klezmer rabbit hole….oy
persi, that’s scheduled by the organized bride to be to happen in january.
Is great question.
I can’t find an online version of “Filibuster XXX” by Antibalas, but that group does. They’re Afrobeat, so it tends not to be singable, but is it ever danceable! When it all gets to be too much for words, you can join them in singing La-la-la (YouTube), as performed this year in Austin, TX. Lest you doubt the point, proper thanks is given toward the end, to our government for its constant supply of amazement, or some such.
Oh well, if the bride has scheduled it, you must make it so. Probably not a bad idea, even swanky stores have post-Christmas sales.

Wow, that’s great!

Hi Margot,

Nance has an excellent new rant up at DU titled “O, Come All Ye Truly Unfaithful” on what she calls the OPCs (Outraged Pretend Christians) if you guys haven’t read it yet. Here’s the linky attempt (thought I’d figured out how to write code but it didn’t work earlier today) so, if it goes fubar, maybe some kind pup will do the correction:

yeah and that’s IF i can find a youtube or a googlevid of them. The ones i really want to post? Don’t have any kind of indie promo video of their songs. They did an incredible cover of Woodstock, Helpless, and Ohio–but unless i actually upload them to say, mediafire or yousendit? You guys wouldn’t be able to hear it or see it.
Everything else is pretty much out of the question in terms of understanding it, even with my loose translations. I strayed away from the US bands because the quality of the music in japan is incredible in japan if you look in the right places.

Pink is a modern singer with a pretty direct protest song. “Dear Mr. President”
http://youtube.com/watch?v=9eDJ3cuXKV4
There are quite a few out there still doing it, but I wonder if the 30 year plan to takeover the media, and create a complacent society is keeping any of these from really taking hold in our discourse.
Makes me think about how much of CSNY was protestmusic. When you put it all in one place, it adds up.
And then there’s just about everything Leonard Cohen wote. I can’t find a link to Song of Isaac, but “The Partisan” will do
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2I5UYkcPAY
Sorry if my protest was sharp, alias, twas not directed at you. I just thought folks oughta know. I like their music, more’s the shame….
You might need to modify some words for our times, or then again maybe not.
Brother Can You Spare a Dime (YT), lyrics by Y.Harburg.
Also One Meat Ball (YT), a fate richly deserved by some who probably won’t suffer it.
some lessons get beat’n into ya ;)
Alias seems to think so and she is in the biz. But I have to wonder just how true that is considering musicians have the internetz. The silence of young political/anti war outrage is deafening to me.
It’s okay, it just kinda threw my chances of even getting honorable mention out the window unless the rules are bent enough for me to allow to send files of those covers i would love to share with you guys. It drives me nuts that there is NOTHING out there on video of them i can show you. I’d have to have a contact in japan to get a Live DVD(which costs about 3 times the average american equivalent to buy),and then shipping’s a B**tch.)*sighs* So i’m sorta left in the dust here.
Then there’s the grandaddy of them all. the one that got banned from airplay. “Sky Pilot”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycKD5Xh3mmM
Bringing two:
1) Gil-Scott Heron, “The Revolution Will not Be Televised”, although really pretty much anything from Mr. Heron would fit in here.
(note: song seems to be edited a bit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTCQSk2l8bc
2) Tom Morello aka The Nightwatchman, “The Road I must Travel”, although again pretty much anything he records under the Nightwatchman moniker makes a pretty good “start the riot” protest song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrBfPLUm5so
And as a kicker, here’s The Nightwatchman and Anti-Flag with a savagely rebellious version of “This Land is Your Land”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..re=related
Hi bluejeansntshirt,
No I sure didn’t, but I can see how he’d blend in well. Was this in the 70s?
Actually I was thinking about that song not long ago, and the ideas of vigil and resolve, and taking one’s only chance against despotism, and it’s not farfetched to me.
(And yes, was that not great drama? As the camera panned that audience, it seemed that many felt something extraordinary was happening.)
It’s deafening to me on normal radio, which is why i ignore it entirely. There’s little to no substance on anything. It’s why i’m a streaming internet DJ and not working on a satellite radio station in the Clear Channel empire right now. I’m pretty sure there’s some hiding on MySpace and whatnot, but that’s kind of a place i avoid too. For personal preferences, mostly. (Note, i hardly use my FaceBook page as it is.)
You and my older son have a shared love of anime, and he also listens to songs in Japanese.
Dang! Beat me to it!
I think part of the difference between then and now is that, in the 60s, you had to live in a shoebox in an attic in outer Mongolia not to be seeing the horror every night on TV. Plus there was an active and highly visible anti-war movement.
Not Ready to Make Nice — Dixie Chicks
Because they don’t face any chance of being drafted… JMHO!
Yea, good points. Pretty good pick after all. Thanks!
Those Olympics…man, didn’t really watch the events, but that ceremony was one of the better produced events I’ve ever seen, and Pavarotti’s performance was the icing on the whole thing. Amazing…
The often overlooked fathers of punk, Detroit’s MC5 and the “American Ruse”

iirc 1965. He didn’t want to tour anymore and retired to the studio and wrote Pet Sounds. It always rates first or second place in fave album polls. Paul McCartney says it inspired the Beatles to make Sgt. Peppers.
You also discount the record labels AND Clear Channel(with payola the unspoken god), dictating what gets played on ‘top 40′ popular radio in every hodunk town from coast to coast. Also what gets overplayed like hell on MTV as well(when they remember to actually PLAY music vids). There are some remarkable exceptions to that, but mostly? It’s all manufactured crap.
Hence my straying to the east. ^^ (and a bit of canuck guitar rock)
For Eureka Springs Oh Sharon
This is the Huckster’s dogwhistle to the evangelicals, who say “The Mormons believe in Jesus, but not our Jesus….” sez the ex-Mormon fiance.
30 year plan to takeover the media, and create a complacent society
I’ll be this actually goes back at least as far as the Production Code, and I mean as a deliberate strategy by some. I think they have failed in a way, simply because there is too much quality art out there, even if it doesn’t get channelled through the big pipes much. But on the other hand, so much meaning has been driven underground again.
If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next–Manic Street Preachers
Totally forgot about this gem. Britrock. *sighs happily*

That one, was Eiyuu by Doa. That’s the band that covered Ohio that i want you guys to hear so badly. NO Engrish in it, they got the sound, feeling and the 3 part harmony is stunning. XD

Me too. We are well into tomorrow here in this time zone – I’ll be sorry tomorrow – but you folks have been great!

Try #2
The Nightwatchman (Tom Morello), “The Road I must Travel”

and here’s a fine rebel version of “This Land is Your Land” by The Nightwatchman and Anti-Flag:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..re=related
Obviously, anything by Rage Against the Machine, but to narrow it down, “Killing In The Name”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkuOAY-S6OY
And for a complete change of genres, Paul Simon and “Adios Hermanos” (My personal choice when I need to get ready to fight Da Man)
Note: can’t find a video, but here’s a link to the lyrics at least:
http://www.videotesti.com/paul…..manos.html
Oh and Eiyuu translates to Hero, roughly in japanese. Which fits the Ultraman Franchise perfectly. *grins* That was from Ultraman Nexus, which ran in 2005 or 2006 i think. They did both openings to the show for that version.
That is a cool song, Alias! Mahalo! *poof*

waccamaw, it worked that time :)
Matt Stoller has an excellent post which answers the question: What the Democrat Did Wrong.
Dems were never gonna win the Virginia seat; Ohio was a great hope, but the victory is that the NRCC spent themselves farther into debt to hold the seat. And there’s lessons from the Democrat’s race to bitchslap Rahm with bigtime.
$400,000 of money the GOP is having a hard time raising.

MOSH
“Maybe we can reach alqueda through my speech
Let the president answer a higher anarchy
Strap him with an Ak-47, let him go, fight his own war
Let him impress daddy that way
No more blood for oil, we got our own battles to fight on our own soil
No more psychological warfare, to trick us to thinking that we ain’t loyal
If we don’t serve our own country, we’re patronizing a hero
Look in his eyes its all lies
The stars and stripes, they’ve been swiped, washed out and wiped
And replaced with his own face, Mosh now or die”
Land Of Confusion
This is one of my favorites (a remake of the old Genesis song). Animation is by Todd McFarlane.
“I won’t be coming home tonight
My generation will put it right
We’re not just making promises
That we know we’ll never keep
There’s too many men, too many people
Making too many problems
And there’s not much love to go round
Can’t you see this is a land of confusion?
Now, this is the world we live in
And these are the hands we’re given
Use them and let’s start trying
To make it a place worth fighting for”
Beautiful song Margot. I’d forgotten it.
Long Road Out Of Eden
Freeways flickering, cell phones chiming a tune
We’re riding to Utopia; road map says we’ll be arriving soon
Captains of the old order clinging to the reins
Assuring us these aches inside are only growing pains
But it’s a long road out of Eden
When The President Talks To God
The video is from the Jay Leno show in 2005.
When the president talks to God
Are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our women’s’ rights
And send poor farm kids off to die?
Does God suggest an oil hike
When the president talks to God?

I was in Houston, Texas over the weekend and spoke to some folks about torture and whatnot. They were surprisingly forgiving and finding all kinds of rationalizations. Trouble was, they weren’t from Houston. They were from O H I O.
Our people is sicko and we need to do some learnin’.
For FDL to even TRY and instill linkage to Gilley is an insult to his time on this planet.
I’m, sorry Suz, but FDL ain’t half the blog Gilley was.
It’s become a watered down version of progressive lite, smooshed with a curtain of velvet crush to hide it’s linkages to beltway causes celebre. Sad, too, it held SUCH promise.
