SEIU Local 99 in Los Angeles -- education workers who include teacher's aids, cafeteria workers and crossing guards -- have fired former Clinton spokesman Chris Lehane from a consulting contract in support of the WGA .
"By the end of the week, I believe Chris Lehane will have no union clients because of his work for the AMPTP," says SEIU President Andy Stern, who confirms that all Change to Win Unions are severing ties with Lehane. "His days are numbered in the labor movement."
The decision came after Lehane began consulting for the AMPTP, who walked away from the negotiating table with the WGA on Friday insisting that they agree to cross the picket lines of other unions before they would return to the talks. It was an overt union-busting move meant to drive a wedge between the WGA and SAG, who have been supportive of the writers and whose contract with the AMPTP is up for renewal in June. Change to Win unions include the Teamsters, Laborers, SEIU, Carpenters & Joiners, United Farm Workers, Food and Commercial Workers, and UNITE HERE.
There is a limit to what you can do and still work for progressive organizations. In contracting out as a strike buster for the AMPTP, Lehane has definitely crossed it.
You can send an email to the network executives in charge of your favorite shows and tell them to return to the negotiating table here.

Morning, Jane!
Good. And good morning all!
Good morning, Jane!
Outstanding! Glad to see some consequences for someone.
Jane, do you have any sense for the price of the consulting contracts that Lehane is losing?
It could put a real dent in the Wingnut Welfare Budget, especially at Christmastime.
Maybe there’s an opening at the RIAA?
Jane - They keep talking about replacing scripted shows with reality shows, but won’t the various craft unions (grips, gaffers etc) honor the picket lines too?
I would have thought a really concerted labor movement could pretty much shut down the industry.
Gee…too, too damn bad fer Ol’ Chris. But…
He’s still got the Clinton campaign to fall back on.
Right?
And I’m absolutely sure that after this he can ‘hook up’ with Obama.
What principled folk these Dead Last Caucus types are, eh?
The question is will Lehane become radioactive to Dems seeking his kind of “help.” I find that elected folk are often far removed from how stuff like this smells to people on the ground…
Reality shows aren’t unionized, so (a) there’s no picket line to cross and (b) no union members to honor it.
Then we must make sure to “edumacate them in the error of their ways” so that they no longer make those types of unwise hiring decisions.
Sweatshop writing. I remember this Canadian writer Heather Menzies who once wrote that more and more professionals, writers, doctors etc. will be treated as though they are part of a manufacturing assembly line. Jobs will be dumbed down. We’ll all have to take a number. Go WGA.
Jane, I can’t seem to find any writings by Christy. Is she no longer with fdl? I really miss her writings and wanted to tell you that the new site does not work for me.

That’s the kind of pushback I like to see!
And coming soon, an opportunity for the citizens of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina to show some solidarity and support.
Fire the boss!

Who ya gonna believe, Hillary or your lyin’ eyes?
She’s on vacation, spending some quality time with Mr. ReddHedd and The Peanut.
Not Jane but can answer this question - Christy is off on a well-deserved vacation spending quality time with family (and baking Christmas cookies IIRC)…
Christie’s taking 2 weeks vacation, to do Christmas stuff with her family.
How about a purge of the Joe Lieberliar faction of the Democratic Party. These rats are Neo-cons who pose as Democrats, such as Dangerstein, Lehane, and Pelosi. I would suggest we next purge Howard Wolfson, who is behind the sleaze attacks on Barack Obama.
Jane, thanks for the prompt reply and best wishes for a great xmas for everyone at FDL. This site has really, really done some outstanding work this past year with the reporting from the Libby trial and all the other great work that all of you do. I also really enjoy your writings also Jane and wish the best for all of you for the new year. And I ask that everyone make a donation for Xmas to FDL so all of you can have a Merry Xmas!!

Go get ‘em, Jane!
This is HOT news
so let’s get the word out, spotlight and digg it
I just wonder what took the unions so long. Now if only Stern would bust Oprah’s ass into making sure her show is all union, or is Stern gonna give her a break?
For WGA. You kids work it! (The youtube fixation kicks in about now. Apologies.)
Good riddance. Can we do some housekeeping on the rest of the consultant/pundit class?
Prairie Sunshine is serving up fresh food for thought about honor and dignity today…While Nobody’s Lookin’
Chris Lehane is a slimeball…
Grew up in a union household. Union assured us kids healthcare and food on the table. Scabs must be shamed. Relentlessly.
1,692 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Diogenes and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
“Who ya gunna believe, Hillary or your lyin’ eyes.”
Yes indeed…those lyin’ eyes and the good Iowegians may jest deliver a message ta Mrs. Clinton and Barak O’Lieberman. Politics is real for folks in the Midwest and when they’re hurtin and have a choice between the eighth grade sorority president, a phony suede shoe salesman and a guy who represented folks like them against corporations who have been robbin ‘em blind fer a hundred years…well, these folks aren’t stupid.
I think Iowa is gunna give the Edwards team a great boost. I would really love ta see a debate between Elizabeth Edward and Mrs. Clinton on national health care…no maybe not, even I ain’t that vindictive!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND DO IT TO THEM BEFORE THEY DO IT TO YOU AGAIN!!
Re: Lehane radioactive to Dems:
Just ask John Kerry about how much Chris helped him in 2004.
Taft - Hartley outlaws secondary strikes, so honoring the WGA line puts the other unions at risk. Our country has terrible labor laws.
If only we could fire Feinstein and Rockefeller for the same thing. Hell, the entire Dem leadership. Well, I can dream, can’t I?
Norske,
I hope you are right. I don’t need to wait for the general to have clear choices - I’ve got a clear choice right now.
Not really OT–
If you think the Dems need Lehane’s sorta help, what I’ve been saying all along about Repug prez candidates:
This is great.
The local labor council in Canton Ohio severed it ties with the local Democratic party when the party screwed them (one last time.)
And the Gray Lady and most MSM continue to anoint Mama:
The Dems are more settled in their decisions? That’s news to me.
Red’s vacating - a well deserved one I may add.
But where’s TRex?
TRex moved into his own place, with more room for the therapod.
Good on the SEIU. Good on Andy Stern. Let’s hope this starts to turn the tide on the divide and conquer strategy that corporate interests have been using against labor since the PATCO strike in 1981.
I’m sure Chris Lehane won’t be short of work long. Not if Hillary gets the nomination. And then we will all be made to rue the day!
