Huckabee announced this morning the endorsement of Jim Gilchrist, the founder of the anti-illegal immigration and border security group the Minutemen.
Now I know Huck needs to bolster his keep-the-brown-people-out credentials for the Republican primary, but does he really wanna stage endorsement photo-ops with a guy who used neo-Nazis to work his phone bank?
Just askin’.
More here. And more on Gilchrist here.

Blue Texan!
Howdy.
Here’s crazed Huckabee:
Wow. Is it really possible that Huckabee could become the Republican nominee?
Hi Blue Texan,
How is that this man is actually a serious candidate for the nomination? I knew the right was fritzed out, but lord amighty!
The xenophobes and evangelicals like to align in my neck of the woods.
Just off the top of my head, I’d say that Duncan Hunter might’ve been expecting the Gilchrist endorsement.
We can only hope:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITI…..index.html
I thought Gilchrist had to resign on account of a bunch of missing money. Huckleberry wants crooks endorsing him? That’s my kinda preacher man.
JimWhite @ 7:
Those numbers are really telling. And that’s why Edwards should be the Dem nominee and Hillary should not.
Ding!!
Exodus 22:18, Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
Ok, Huck, guess this rule is still good, then. Because of you guys, thank god for cops.
Hncksterbee names Bay and Pat Buchanan to his campaign staff and Tancredo has his vp :)

Apologies for the early o/t….
Just wanted to ask if anyone else is getting as creeped out as I with all the news coverage today that seems to be trying to turn the woman “guard” in Colorado who killed the religious shooter into some kind of cult hero? So, it’s O.K. for churches to keep their own law enforcers on staff now? Why don’t they just hire blackwater?
This does have a faint tie-in to the minutemen because they give me the same hair-standin’-up-on-the-back-of-the-neck reaction with their vigilante mind-set.
On the one hand, it’s depressing to know that so many Americans support Huckabee’s way of thinking.
On the other hand, it’s wonderful to see all of Karl Rove’s wedge issues coming back to bite the Republican party in the ass…….
Someone explain to me please…when the 29% is referred to, is it 29% of the pukes, or 29% of the country? Are the 29% evangelists….or supporters of the Neocon policies or both?
Ghouliani will pick up the neocons.
Huckabee will pick up the evangelicals.
So, I’m trying to figure out how this all plays out.
If that were true, why would there be so many different religions with so many different versions of the creator?
So….God created creationism, and…..Satan made man create science…is that it?
Hucks the GOP nominee lock up your daughters, God knows who else he will let out of prison. Newt was on Fox last night saying that unlike Dukakis who believed in letting prisoners out early and the getting rid of the death penalty. Huck didn’t believe in any of this, (I had to change the channel after that)
Because if Huck didn’t believe in giving prisoners a second chance and violent repeat rapists I myself can’t see any reason to let them out early.
Well… the only reason why he let that guy out is because Huck believed all the Bill Clinton railroaded an innocent man crap the right was saying at the time.
We need some winger quotes about this rapist being innocent, quotes from Rush, Newt Ann Coulter, Fawell any right winger operating back then.
Since Huck is all about protecting people railroaded by Lefties we need to ask what stand a Huck Presidency would take on the Texas woman raped by Hal and KBR. Whose accusations could hurt Condi’s State Dept who turned over her rape kit to KBR.
I still can’t believe that if the State Dept turns over evidence to KBR the people accused of causing the crime then State is responsible for blowing the case. Also why did they do that KBR does not have DNA testing capabilities. Someone should ask Condi to resign.
Or BOTH? If you can find a guy who’s both a Neocon and a Theocon, contact the Coen Brothers, ASAP. Maybe they could actually top the psychopath from their current film.
Hehindeedy.
And listen to a little more of this cazy mofo:
(Same link as my 3.)
Bahahaha! There are a lot of Pagan Nazi’s out there Thor and Odin worshipers why is Huck the Christian Preacher accepting their endorsement?
I say, Wow, it’s really possible we could have a rethug in the WH again! They are all of like mind on so many things. Romney insists you must be religious, even believe in Christ, to be President. Huck says he believes in the following gun control: arm everyone. Rudy’s certifiably nuts; witness the uncontrolled laughing at Russert’s questioning. Thompson is too lazy to campaign. It’s hard to tell which one is more dangerous.
me @ 21:
this crazy mofo…
Was he for creationalism before he was against creationalism heck now I’m confused about what his stand is Hucks been learning from Mitt.
Which proves again that, of the three, Edwards is our best national candidate. (I wonder what the stats would look like if they included Biden, Richardson, and Kucinich.)
I know one….GWB.
Gilchrist is all over the place. One day he’s Independent. Next day he’s Republican. Gilchrist switches parties more often than some people change underwear. The following day he’s at war with his own organization. This guy has a problem working with people. Who’s not his enemy? His career runs from battling board members to bankruptcy (who got burned on that one). Gilchrist loves violence. His people skills reminds me of Duke Cunningham. I remember when we used to call people like that “unstable”.
Man created science? He didn’t discover science through observations of the physical world? Interesting religious concept!
The devil made him do it.
To be a successful candidate you always have to be for before you’re against….no, wait….it’s you have to be against before you’re for…unless….
Hah! That’s an interest concept, too!
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/004877.php
The firing of Col. Morris Davis, Gitmo Prosecutor, is becoming more and more interesting. He refused to approve waterboarding. Do we have a new whistleblower? He was prohibited from testifying before Congress today. Does the Defense Department control Diane Feinstein?
I’m not sure if the Huckster makes me happier to not be a Republic or
happier to not be his type of Christian. It’s probably a wash.
The Pew Religious Forum Survey indicates that 54% of Pentecostals hear voices from God that call upon them to act.
Large numbers also have witnessed faith healings, and have participated in exorcisms (about 34%). That means a lot of their Congregations are supposedly afflicted with demons (or more likely mentally ill, like the lad who attacked the churches). Without professional help these people, who may actually have illnesses exacerbated by continuing contact with the Church, may violently act out.
Within that context perhaps these churches need specially trained Security Forces.
Huckabee would try to argue that Satan is trying to draw the “world” away from God by making the “world” believe that people descend from a rock..and that the only way to view “evolution” is that God created the idea in man, so that it would be disavowed by those led by God and point back to creationism.
Creationists are particularly upset about being descended from…anything on earth…especially rocks and apes.
Christians were created first
You know I was joking not long ago about when the GOP pilgrimages would begin for the coveted Minutemen endorsement.
This bunch is making satire impossible.
It sure would be nice if we had some Dems strongly defend immigrants on TV the Hispanic vote would be in the bag.
Also I think demanding Mexico pay their workers more would help reduce the immigrant problem.
Taxing the goods of countries that don’t pay their workers a living wage or meet the Kyoto agreement would get us labor and minute man votes (ugh! not sure I want them)
Carlos Slim a Mexican is rumored by Forbes to be the worlds richest man, I think he can afford to pay his workers more. Mexico’s inequality of wealth is something Bush and the GOP are trying so hard to recreate here.
Oh, and creationists believe that dinosaurs are actually very, very ancient gekkos. That is literally how they explain the dinosaurs (no snark). So, if anyone owns a really old, old, old gekko; it should be about 20 feet tall by now…
She also said that he had been invited and not subpoenaed. I’m no DiFi fan, but it sounded to me like she wanted him to testify.
Actually, to the extent that science is a method rather than a body of knowledge, people did indeed invent science.
There is too much confusion here I can’t get no relief:)

Just what were Gilchrist’s reasons he found Huckie so appealing? This guy is too weird. Gilchrist, I mean though Huckie is right up there with him. Maybe that’s the appeal.
His weight loss?
Have you been watching that lady on “The View”? According to her, not only is creationism the only acceptable theory of how the world got to be, Christianity was the first religion.
Just got off the phone with a friend who was reporting to me the nuggets from a Stratfor http://www.stratfor.com/ conference call. For those who don’t know, it’s a wingnut geopolitical consulting firm. I thought it might have some intelligent people as I read a book one of them wrote awhile back, and there must be some smart wingnuts.
But seems there still buried in Rovian buffoonery on the domestic political side. Said Huckabee would not only win R nomination, but would win prez against Clinton. Her unfavorables were part of the arguement, but more important was the fact that Huckabee could speak to the middle of the country. Guess they haven’t noticed Kansas politics, nor does it seem that they read the polls. And Huckabee’s specific strategy was to get the 35% Rs among the 20 million single adult women who didn’t vote last time. And he’s going after their vote thru their churches, not thru any policy initiatives. Don’t know about you, but that sounds like a pretty old & tired tactic for 2008.
I was told once that dinosaur bones were put in the ground by God to make us think there were dinosaurs. Pity that relationship didn’t last.
but the lifespan of a gekko is 3-4 years. How’d they grow so big?
Some have said that Huckabee looks like a heavier Kevin Spacey…
“lady” and “the view” all in one sentence. Yep I heard it on good authority… probably at hufpost that source of all blogtrash
It is, but what choice do they have? This is the party they built, and Huck is the perfect candidate for it.
OT
CSPAN 3 is showing the Gates hearing
RESPONSE TO TERRORISM
U.S. Afghanistan Strategy
Recently, Sec. of Defense Robert Gates expressed concerns about the rising level of violence in Afghanistan. During this hearing of the House Armed Service Cmte., he is expected to discuss a comprehensive strategy — joining military operations with economic & political development — for the country.
Actually, they say that “conditions” on earth were different then and they could live and grow for hundreds of years, which is also how they explain the bible stating that so and so was 140 years old, etc.,…..
I watched them explain this stuff on the teevee….they have that sort of “explanation for everything, because they take the bible completely literally.
Those involved in empirical scientific pursuit would be very disappointed in your POV.
Why would anyone want to follow a god that was that dishonest? (Not you, I mean the people who think like that.) That in itself ought to make them stop and think … but they never seem to notice the discrepancies in their own stories.
Yesirree. My amazement is that Stratfor is still falling for it, and thinking it’s a winner. My friend was scared & depressed until I convinced her that Stratfor was living with in a wingnut bubble.
“The breakdown of the Bicrimental Mind” mind suggests that people used to hear voices the voices heard on the left side were bad. But Socrates had his Daemon speaking from the right side that told him things so it wasn’t all bad.
I’m wondering if these guys haven’t evolved yet and feel weird in a world where most of us don’t hear voices and the world views people who do as crazy?
Groups under attack do tend to withdraw from the world as self protection and in isolation develop strange ideas? Socrates Daemon becomes Christ the bad left side voices become the devil? No wait what they say in Christs name must be left side voices!
And I say he looks like Huckleberry Hound.
Only I like Huckleberry Hound.
And just how do you force people to practice your economics and politics at the point of a gun? It’s like hiring anthropologists to make it “easier” for the military to go in to a village. Huh? That’s a contradiction in terms. A primary purpose of anthropologists is noninterference in a culture, period. You can’t be a missionary and anthropologist simultaneously.
Remember when we tried this warped concept in Vietnam?
I think he looks like Wallace from Wallace and Gromit.
The god a person chooses is a reflection of oneself. If your god loves war and violence that’s because it is the inner most core of the worshipper. If your god is cruel and loves vengeance, so does the worshiper. God is made in the image of the worshiper who is in the image of the god he/she chooses.
Was it Dawkins who argued that man invented god & not the other way around?
The Huckster freed a rapist to rape again, wants to put people with AIDS in concentration camps, and continues to climb in Republic polls. Amazing.
Anybody know how many irreverent heathens exist in the US with the right to vote. Sounds like we should get every single one! Better start working; we’ll need all we can get!
I find it difficult to believe that anyone who isn’t a complete irrational Jesus freak, as opposed to those who are true Christians, that don’t go to church on Sunday armed, and are not required by their church to believe in creationism, would help to elect the likes of Huckabee!
Did Huckie become the Repugs new god? Made in their image?
Actually it’s much less amazing than when Rudy was ahead. As BT said in 52
Some of the high opposition to Huckabee and the other Republicans may be because they simply don’t know enough about them yet. McCain and Giuliani are the best known National Candidates for the Pugs.
But Edwards seems to have surged quite a bit in these “head-to-heads”. But he’s still way down in the Democratic three ways. He will climb if he can survive the early primary States. But he has to somehow be able to surpass either Obama or Clinton eventually to win the nomination.
I’d like to see some surveys that do these comparisons on a statewide basis then estimates electoral votes. Maybe too many difficulties with that. But I suspect, for example, that Huckabee’s support s very regionalized…while McCain’s (who does best against the Democrats) likely has more support nationally. That is, he would be competing in almost every state.
We have to remember that elections are won by how many electoral votes (and hence large states with enough smaller ones) that can be accrued. It looks like a slaughter if you get 49% of the popular vote in every state . And if you get 80% in a handful of southern States and lose the rest of the Country you can’t win either.
But we only see the numbers out as raw nationwide stats.
This survey really demonstrates, though, just how much luster has gone off the Republican “brand”. In almost none of the match-uo races are their candidates winning.
BTW McCain really doesn’t beat Hillary. Given the statistical error it’s a dead-heat between he a nd Clinton. Same as Obama.
he wasn’t the only one to argue that.
imo he’s too militant, for him atheism is all but a religion.
That’s who I’ve always thought he looks like.
And Douglas Feith looks like Weird Al Yankovic.
How did Methuzelah live almost a thousand years?
Perhaps you missed it in my 47, but the fact that of the 20 million unmarried adult women who didn’t vote last time, 35% are Rs, means that 65% are Ds. Now the too-dumb-to-live DLCs will not go after their votes, but there is a bottom’s up movement to get them out. http://www.wvwv.org/
the bible tells me so
Voltaire: Si Dieu n’existait pas, il faudrait l’inventer
If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent Him
I figure if God doesn’t believe in a higher god, then he’s an atheist. And if he wants us to be like him, he’d want us to be atheists too.
Many a poor souls made this argument and professed this belief. Most paid the price on a living pyre. Talk about beheading, geese, the smell of your own flesh slowing burning at the fire inches up your body until you are engulfed must have been the most horrible. And good Christians seem to suffer from amnesia concerning these atrocities.
Crooks and Liars has Huckabee proclaiming that women should “submit” to their husbands as well. Although that does tend to be standard Southern Baptist folderol.
Hmmm. Atheism is Dawkin’s religion. Don’t think so. How vigorously would you argue if the rest of the world was on the other side of the issue?
Here’s my favorite Dawkins
Didn’t the moon spin faster around the earth a long time ago? What if they were using a lunar calendar back then?
Thanks. I knew others had said it before Dawkins, but couldn’t bring up the references.
Much as I like Edwards and hope he wins the nomination, I don’t care for “electability” arguments any more now than I did when they were used in favor of Kerry last time around. A lot more depends on the general election campaign, and the people who haven’t paid enough attention yet to make a solid decision than on which one a polling sample picks out of a lineup at this point.
Arguments for “electability” based on skills, positions, and strategy are fine. Arguments for “electability” based on polls are worth about as much as the corporate media’s coronation of Hillary a couple of months ago.
I’m having trouble getting interested in the primary- but for those who are trailing in the national polls- winning in one of the two early races is probably essential to have a chance. Rudy, Romney, Hillary, and Obama can all get by with second or third in Iowa and NH and stay alive. Edwards, Biden, McCain, Thompson, and the Huckster need a WIN or they’re toast.
Both, Willard and Preacher Boy, pull wads of hundred dollar bills out their ass. For the benefit of the “church,” of course. Their needs, however, require laundering the filth-money through the old-boy-churches. Call 1-800-BUY-HOPE!
Agree, to the extent that the when it method is a exclusively culturally transmitted system it’s likely man-made (or at least Hominoid-made…since tool-use in apes can be viewed as hypothesis testing by trial-and-error experiments).
But one could argue that it’s also a natural system. If organisms behave in various manners (hypotheses) and the environment as its exists “rewards” those behavioral sets differentially through survival and reproduction, then, in a sense the natural world is “Scientific”. Organisms and species constantly test different hypotheses, flawed hypotheses incongruent with the data (environment) are rejected. Organisms thus become better at evaluating the information within their environment.
In that way humans may not have invented science. Science is an intimate part of the Universe.
He ate a lot of yogurt? *g*
Or what? They get stoned? Just try it, Huckie Baby and you’ll get your a– whipped.
Her name is Sherri Shepherd and she is a creationist extraordinaire! I saw her on “The View.” (I don’t watch the show; I was just changing channels and happened to stop there for a few minutes.) The day I saw her, she had stumbled into the subject of religion again and insisted that “Christians came first” even though the other hosts kept saying the Greeks came first and the Romans…
When Keith reported this last night, Ms. Redshift turned to me and said “I love you dearly, but no effing way!”
We need to plaster that image all over the place to get out the women vote.
We could have Southern African American women asking their white girl friends how could they support Huck?
After all how can you submit to your husband when you know he’s wrong?
Like when he’s lost driving the car and won’t ask for directions?
Or like when the baby’s just been fed but is still crying and he thinks the child needs more food? You just know that your husband won’t help clean up the sick. We need a few more examples but I am really starting to feel good about Huck being the GOP nominee real good!
And according to Gnosticism, God wasn’t really God — he just thought he was — actually his mother was the real God. The spoiled brat “God” was called the Demiurge — equivalent to the OT God, Yahweh.
Tweety and others argue that Hucky is helpin Rudy by keepin Romney in check..All seem to assume that Hucky doesn’t have a chance of actually winning the thing.
Huckabee had no choice. The Stormfront endorsement was already taken, you see.
My VT friend went to a wedding of one of his female employees where she promised to submit to her husband and told my friend that was woman’s role according to the bible. He was flabbergasted.
OT
The date – the 11th – could point to an Islamic terror link. Al-Qaida in Islamic North Africa claimed responsibility for attacks on April 11 that hit the prime minister’s office and a police station, killing 33 people.
Algeria has been battling Islamic insurgents since the early 1990s, when the army canceled the second round of the country’s first-ever multiparty elections, stepping in to prevent likely victory by an Islamic fundamentalist party.
Islamist armed groups then turned to force to overthrow the government; up to 200,000 people were killed in the ensuing violence.
So many religions, so little time. How do you come to know about Gnosticism?
all four paragraphs are part of the NPR story. a little trouble with formatting.
She’s the same one who, when pressed by Whoopi Goldberg, said she didn’t know whether the Earth was round or flat.
I’m really glad there are figures like her out there, demonstrating to the world that creationists and fundamentalists are not just devout followers of what our corporate media has decided is “real heartland” religion, they actively reject ideas that have been common knowledge for centuries.
My mother was married three times. She goes to one of the “submission” churches and loves to parrot the stuff- of course she was submissive in exactly zero of the three marriages.
People repeat a lot of shit without even thinking about it.
What they do is always more important than what they say.
Shorter = republican
I came across it while studying the history of the New Testament several years ago. I studied the NT to learn more about what makes Christians tick — many of them are friends and relatives. In fact, my wife is a Christian — I’m an atheist; formerly Jewish.
There’s also Robert Grenier, who was fired soon after Porter Goss became CIA Director because he tried to stop water boarding and extraordinary renditions to nations that tortured.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..00016.html
As I was rereading this with fresh eyes, I was thinkin’ W.
This was the exact point I wanted to make on some thread that involved the “free market” economy.
Not sure you can learn about Xtians by studying the history of the NT. One of the few intelligent things my wingnut son ever said was “What does Christianty have to do with Christ anyway?”
And don’t forget that his answer to law enforcement is to arm everybody!
Wow, what has happened to the GOP???? There was a time that belonging to the minutemen was considered radical and extremist. In fact, here in Des Moines back in the early 90’s we had an Assistance Chief of Police withdraw from consideration for the Chief of Police position because it was revealed that he was a member of the minutemen. He later went on to become the President of the NRA, but that is a different story. There is no doubt the GOP has been hi-jacked by the radical ultra right wing fanatics.
Maybe we should give Huck a break. Perhaps he’s just Nazi lite. In which case, the view here is he is very much mainstream GOP.
Well, by studying the Gospels, one can learn about the life of Christ and his teachings. And the Acts and Letters offer a foundation for everything that came after in the various “churches”. But you can probably learn as much about churches in general by studying the Catholic Church at the end of the First Millenium.
I haven’t heard anyone talk about Julian Jaynes”Bicameral Mind” in decades. Does it still have credence? Is there new supportive evidence?
I never did swallow his view that the hemispheric differentiation related to civilization and literacy however.
Sorry OT but….
keeryst!
At New Paltz, I overheard a climber say, ‘without wine there is no Christianity!’ ;~P
Great observation. Everything the evangelicals tout as “values” and justification for their actions is taken from the OT; except for Revelations. The Catholic Church, who they despise, takes almost everything from the NT; except for Revelations, which they don’t really mention.
Interrresssting.
I think he looks just like the Campbell’s Soup Chef.
I climbed Easy O and a couple of more difficult ones back in the day…my Ex used to climb there all the time….
As you know, you must be very careful about listening to those Gunks climbers, though in this case I agree.
You mean potentially 65% are Dems? Otherwise, what happened to the Independents?
petrecca & I discovered at the NYC meetup that we’re both ex-Gunks climbers, so that was a little inside from him to me. Glad you joined the circle.
Good Q that I didn’t think of. Maybe they just asked whether they leaned D or R.
Voltaire
Yes, I know. I began by just stutying the NT and comparing many translations — then I became fascinated in the history as a result of my other studies.
When I compared translations line by line, all sorts of wild and unexpected things started to pop out. And that got me wondering how all this came to be. Took up five years of my life, but well spent.
Howdy folks…
Jane has graciously enlightened us with a new thread upstairs….
Wahoo!
At least the guy doesn’t try to hide it.
There is a significant distinction (Pelosi and Reid notwithstanding) between Republicans and Democrats. Democrats want to jail corrupt and lying Republicans. Republicans on the otherhand, would like to incarcerate Democrats for their political, incorrect religious views and social beliefs.
Oh boy….
I just love it when somebody decides to let it rip…
funnee….
Unfortunately a lot of the fundies like to pretend and claim that the King James translation is the “Divinely Inspired word of Dog” in all of its glory. /s
My view is that God was a polytheist. “Have no OTHER God before me.” “I am a jealous God”. ” Adam and Eve trying to “become as one of US!” JHVH was pretty clearly the Abrahamic Familial Clan God (”The God of the Jews”…don’t go messin’ with those other Gods and Goddesses out there)…and the Archeology indicates that he had a female consort up until about 400 AD.
Sounds like your mother might be guilty of false advertising, as in, did the men she married think that she meant it when she said she believed women should be submissive?
Some of them would be surprised to know that the more recent versions are actually based on more recently discovered ancient manuscripts that go back much earlier than those used in the King James Version.
Ann – We really must get together sometime over a cup of tea and chat. On the other hand we may all be taken off to a remote island (one of the two thousand plus in the Indonesian Archipelago) and we can chat over roasted lizard and cocoa leaf tea.
The Demiurge was the Material “Creator” God…before that spirit was unified and one. By creating separate physical and biological bodies the Demiurge imprisoned spirit and disunified it. Many Gnostics believed in rejection of the physical nature, becoming extreme aesthetics even castrating or sterilizing themselves to prevent the creation of more “trapped spirits”. Other gnostics became Dionysian, as a way to mock the Demiurge. Gnostic Christians believed that Jesus had somehow latched onto the secret of freeing the Universal spirit to reunite with Sophia…the original wisdom Goddess.
Interesting take. Gotta split — catch y’all later…
Once I got old enough to actually attempt to think, I realized that the King James translation has to be filled with myriads of errors, if for no other reason than a lack of access to original source documents plus folks using translations of translations in languages NOT their own that would have evolved over the 1600 years since first written.
Thanks for filling in; fascinating.
Hey come on, Bushs still a Christian
Just my opinion–most GOP voters have gotta be horrified by the Huckster’s surge. They pandered to the religious right to grab a few more votes, and now it’s coming back to bite them in the ass. Nominate the Huckster!
