. The Oprah factor: Only 1% of Democrats polled say Oprah would make them more likely to vote for Obama, while 14% say they'd be less likely. But 44% say Bubba would make them more likely to vote for Hillary, while 7% say they'd be less likely to do so.
. The National Review endorses Romney. Because what, Alex Trebek is under the weather?
. Jason Linkins thinks Lawrence O'Donnell is nuts for saying Mitt Romney needs to address questions about his Mormon faith and their wee bit of a race problem. Pat Buchanan, unsurprisingly, can't grasp that there's a issue here. New Gallup poll says that more than one in six Americans won't vote for a Mormon.
. David Yepsen says Iowans are worried about out-of-state voters, particularly Republicans who fear "Ron Paul's over-caffeinated backers." Meanwhile, Bowers packs his bags.
. Clinton goes negative on Obama's admission of cocaine use. Personally I don't want to elect some pill gobbling freak but I'm delighted that a politician can and will admit to having lived a life before they entered politics, hell I'm happy they even had one. And given how stupid that whole "didn't inhale" thing played out, you think the Clinton campaign wouldn't want to go there. Oh well, it's not like the Republicans wouldn't mention it, maybe they're doing him a favor so he can claim it's "old news" on down the road.
. Obama goes negative on Edwards. The Clinton campaign is lowering expectations about Iowa, but are they so low that Obama now sees Edwards as the rival he needs to fend off?
. As Huckabee surges, Rudy sinks like a stone -- losing nine points nationwide in the past month, according to ABC/Washington Post. Romney peeled a few points from His Brittleness, too.

Punkinhead Russert ignores GOP strategist John Feehery when he sez (twice!) that he’s most scared of John Edwards.
Hi Jane!
Stink Rudy, stink! Oooops, that must have been a typo. I’ll try again. Sink Rudy, sink!
I think there is something tragic about National Review’s Romney endorsement.
I see the chocolate-covered fingers of K-Lo.
All this horse race stuff & they haven’t even reached the first turn in the track.
Of course, for the Rs, its more like nags than horses. Not a single one of them’s electable.
Just doing his master’s bidding…
Hi Jane!
you want to know something?
that could be the very best thing to happen to rudy and I hope he doesn’t read this blog because what I am about to say would get him the nomination;
the real republicans will climb all over a republican candidate that goes against the theocrats and against the neo cons
if rudy becomes desperate, and really wants to win the nomination, when it becomes obvious “the base” will loose him the nomination, if he then starts attacking “the base” he will then win the republican spot
that is my opinion…but hey, I’m a progressive so what could I POSSIBLY know about republican voters?
I don’t think Obama should go negative on Edwards on labor union issues: Barack’s best friend Oprah is making lots of money in her never-union shop, cranking out Oprah Presents Movies, her daily gabfest and a January reality programme.
Obama going after Edwards is the best news. He wouldn’t be doing it unless he was worried. He sure ain’t doing it to help Hillary.
and she hates the estate tax…what the frig?…man, once you give some people money all they think about is “me”
first, I didn’t know she didn’t employ union and second I am amazed she doesn’t believe in the estate tax
/me to re evaluate opinion of oprah
I think Obama is worried about rural Iowa since weirdly the caucuses are weighed in a way to favor that part of Iowa.
I have no idea who is going to win Iowa, but the fact that a small portion of one state could decide - or go such a long way to deciding - the Dem nominee is just wrong. I think Bowers is on to something. Maybe we should all go vote in Iowa.
I don’t care about Obama’s drug use unless it was last weekend, but I would like to see it covered now instead of having the MSM suddenly discover it in October of next year. I don’t think it should matter to voters, but what I think should matter to voters clearly doesn’t count for much or else Gore or Kerry would be president.
Well, I’m not voting for any of the sell outs, which leaves pretty much no one but Edwards. Someone else earlier was right. We have two wingnut parties in America, and that’s going to lead to facist control!
Pelosi and Bush should be impeached on the same block.
man I was her biggest cheerleader but I would surely vote to impeach the speaker of the house
her and oprah, very disapointed
I wonder just how much Pelosi represents her district these days. She certainly doesn’t seem to have “San Francisco values” much anymore.
Are you sure you’re not thinking about Whoopi opposing the estate tax? I haven’t heard that about Oprah.
Go Edwards!
“who’s your Crush”??? Where’s Christy? What happenened here?
Seems like it’s both.

OT, but of interest to FDL readers, I think; David Sirota on Peter Beinart’s intellectual bankruptcy,…..
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....76340.html
Oprah does not have kids, why would she care about the estate tax?
Sure hope there’s some positive news in the morning from *both* the special state races being held today.
an alternative: Cindy Sheehan
“The Clinton campaign is lowering expectations about Iowa, but are they so low that Obama now sees Edwards as the rival he needs to fend off?”
I continue to hope that Clinton’s and Obama’s negativity cancels each other out and Edwards emerges as the viable candidate. Remember, in a caucus state like Iowa, it matters not only who your first choice is, but also who your second choice is. Some caucus sites may not have enough Clinton voters or Obama voters for their candidate to be viable in the first round, so it matters which candidate’s caucus they decide to join on the second round after their candidate is eliminated. If Clinton and Obama go too negative on each other, the supporters of neither of them will be likely to go for the other candidate on the next round, and Edwards may be the beneficiary.
Teddy, I followed that link but I didn’t see anything about Oprah. Her productions are all done by non-union personnel?
Read the link in my 17. She just resents the dough going to the gov after she’s already paid taxes on it.
Woopi did make comments not liking, about the Estate Tax, but surely she can afford a lawyer to set up a trust and avoid the tax, can’t she?
I think we’re confused, people. It was Whoopi who, surprisingly, said she hates the ‘death tax’. Not Oprah.
I’m wondering why Bill Clinton has made a couple of somewhat odd statements recently. I’m referring to him saying he was against the Iraq war from the beginning and his latest statement about telling Hillary before they were married that she should “dump him”. This doesn’t sound like the Bill Clinton I voted for twice.
oth. Read link at 17.
It’s in the sidebar, quite far down on the right.
Here’s another:
I stand corrected.
You mean the lying, posturing, pro business skunk?
Not that I can even contemplate a republican but Romney has got
to go to the bottom of the heap.Anyone who would strap their dog to
the top of their car for a 10 hour trip needs to enroll in
a sensitivity rehab~

Whoa, very surprising info here on Oprah. I can’t forgive her for not hiring union workers. Gives away cars but won’t hire union?
I don’t think a presidential candidate is responsible for all the views and business practices of all his supporters, but operating a non-union shop is quite a non-starter for me. Especially when Barack Obama made a big deal about union representation at their Double-O rally at the non-union Verizon Center in New Hampshire:
I suppose that’s certainly one way of putting things. ;0)
I think Oprah’s support for Obama could turn out to be a big negative if we could get the truth out on her. Also, she smooched W after he lost one of his debates, helping to repair his ratings. Off to search for the pics.
And it shows that he lacks common sense.

Here’s the pics. It was W kissing Oprah.
http://www.mydd.com/story/2007/12/8/23926/2228
Now I vaguely remember some other W kiss that made a difference in an election.
Oprah is making big money in January with her two ABC reality programmes, which will surely replace a scripted series that’s run through their finished product due to the WGA strike.
Does Obama endorse making money with the moguls while the writers strike?
I’ve never been an Oprah fan. Never even seen a complete show. But, I did have enormous respect for her. Re-thinking that. The kiss is ticking me off but the union info……well, I can’t forgive her for that.
Here ya go:
Oprah and her good, good friend.
Bakin’ cookies! She’s on a two week vacation. Don’t know when she’s due back.
OfT, but another horserace:
Here’s the Ohio Secretary of State’s website for tonite’s results in Congressional District Five.
I just wish we could get some straight talk on the issues from the candidates. That for me would by like a breath of spring. Oh well, perhaps this will happen in the presidential election after the one next November.
As to Oprah, I’ve never watched her show.
How’s Lahoma?
OT-Excuse me, but I just have to say, I can’t believe I just heard Tweety say that Bill Clinton is the biggest pander bear the world has ever known. Someone should tell him that is what he is!
Here is the definitive take on Obama and Oprah’s dog and pony show:
How do I love Oprah…let me count the ways!
That commented; be warned. If word of any criticism of ‘The Only Politician that Matters’, apologies to the Clash, you will be asshole deep in Obama trolls attacking you, Jane, your dog and any other thing they can think of.
OrangeLand has ceased to be a viable site as any, I repeat, any criticism of Senator ‘Hope’ results in you being troll-rated to oblivion.
You have been warned.
KO on now
KO leads with: White House authorized torture.
She’s good. She’s up stairs on one of the laptops. She just sent me an email asking what I planned to cook for supper. She’s on KP tonight. Her choice. ;0)
Oprah supported Arnold and definitely impacted his election to governor of California. Just who is her audience? Certainly not c-span viewers. I don’t think working people have the time. Single, working moms are burning the candle at both ends so it’s not them. Ahhh, I think I know. Rich suburban housewives who live off their husbands support. They have lots of time on their hands.
The only person I know who would watch Oprah was a retired woman who didn’t have a job and sat around eating bonbons all day. Seriously.
Chris Matthews had a series of polls today showing that among Barack, Hillary, and John Edwards, it was Edwards who beat every Repbulican in a general election by the widest margins, and he did so in every case by convincing margins.
Dana Perino claims all torture was legal
That’s quite interesting about Oprah and her non union shop.
Oprah and her good, good friend.
Yikes! He’s got his mouth open!
Ha, I made green curry for the princess and now she is wrecking the kitchen with multiple culinary holiday treats!
The need to ask her if she knows what waterboarding is. Actually they should find out if she knows what torture is first.
Don’t think Oprah or anyone else on tv are giving things away out of their own pocket. Products are typically traded for “promotional consideration” in otherwords, they trade the goods for the advertising value instead of writing a check for the advertising they are getting.
Regarding TeddySanFran’s post saying Oprah is in 3 craft unions, she should be blacklisted by all of them if she won’t hire union workers.
Lawrence O’Donnel nailed Romney’s religious hyprocrisy to the wall. And the GOP’s willingness to back a cult freak. A must see moment on youtube.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=AYgp-JszZ1w
They asked her about waterboarding, and she refused to “comment on any specific technique.”
Was this pre- or post- Cuban missile crisis?
Dana would not understand that question, let alone answer it.
Last night, I did a Chicken Tagine and baked X-mas cookies. Tonight, it’s the GF’s turn..bringing home Subway.*g*
Olberman suggests the need for a special counsel on torture.
Oprah tells me to vote for Obama. Hillary’s mom tells me to vote for her daughter. Oh dear, what to do?
Here’s the question I want answered:
How dumb do you have to be to work in the Bush/Cheney administration?
Do they give tests and the one who scores the lowest gets the job?
You better do what Lahoma tells you to do.
That’s so reminiscent of my description of mall architecture. They hold a contest & then choose the loser.
Yes, they want to make sure that nobody is smarter than the Commander - of course, that’s a fairly low bar.
She tells me the same thing. ;0)
I find it hard to believe that wasn’t photoshopped! It even looks phony!
Yum, she’s making dark chocolate apricots as we . . .speak!
1,692 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Citizen Hamsher and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
“Obama goes negative on Edwards. The Clinton campaign is lowering expectations about Iowa, but are they so low that Obama now sees Edwards as the rival he needs to fend off?”
EEEEdoggies!! Thanx fer the post Sister Jane, when you give the horse race stats it seems ta have a real political context and is much more straight forward than the Inquirer-esk corporate talkin’ heads. And yes I think that O’Lieberman’s attack on Edwards looks like he’s afraid of Edwards but maybe afraid that Edwards will knock ‘im outta second place. Frankly, I’ve felt for a long time that Obama is Mrs. Clinton’s Stalkin’ horse or “alter ego”, if you will…I think the plan was to have Barak in the VP slot come convention time. But I think that the Iowegians are gunna kick both O’Lieberman and Mrs. Clinton ta the curb…and if Edwards comes outta Iowa in first place, look for Al Gore ta show up with John and Elizabeth in New Hampshire the next day!
Go you Hawkeye Norsmen!!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE FUCKIN’ POPCORN…HOW ‘BOUT SOME CARMEL ON THAT TOO!!
Obama made the union pitch as part of his agreement with the union to keep them from picketing the event.
Sam Seder and Keith Olbermann together on Countdown. That is almost as good as Simon and Garfunkel.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, chicken tagine. Is that recipe in Firepup archives? Can we have recipes in PUAC? Can we get to firepup archives?
Whups…must do page refresh to see the link to new post. I’m late, I’m late again, again….
Got the blues & horrid headache? FDL is the cure. Thanks Jane, Teddy, Norske, et al, etc. etc.
It is a puzzlement. We say which candidate we are for, but don’t go into reasons. I didn’t understand why Hillary went for Kyle-Lieberman until I saw it as a move for the Jewish vote. Obama, like so many who rise, reached a point where he trys to broaden his appeal and fudges where he had previously been clear. He didn’t vote for Kyle-Lieberman which is better than voting for it, but in his former karma he would have voted against it. Nevertheless, I like Obama’s initial vote against the war; his willingness to talk to enemies rather than bomb them; and his attempt to find different paths-or so he says.
Still I was for Edwards because I’m not sure the country is ready for a black president. A Jewish friend says he will not vote for Obama under any circumstances because he believes blacks are anti-semetic. Perhaps, though, the country is so fed up with Republicans, they will buy the Democrat even with reservations about his skin color. I cannot believe, under our present circumstances, anyone would vote Republican to avoid voting for a black although, as I said, I know one such person.
According to Dennis Miller, a mean spirited though sometimes funny Republican, he was turned off to Edwards by his debate with Cheney where he congratulated Cheney on his handling of his daughter’s sexuality. Miller thought it beyond arrogant. Then there is the $400.00 haircut and the mansion across from the trailer park which makes Bill O’Reilly crazy because he claims Edwards snubs the trailer parkers. Too elite for a populist, according to B.O.
The choices are not inspiring, but I think we should choose. I wonder, if put to a vote, how Firepups come down.

I loved the haircut story and thought it was played wrong. Think of it like the guy who leaves a big tip for the waitress. Edwards values the service of his hairdresser and the hairdresser came to him. I think it was generous, but fair, compensation. Contrast that with billionaire Mitt who hires the cheapest lansscapers he can find. It’s the difference in the way labor is viewed. Edwards is generous. Mitt is a minimum-wage kind of guy.
Back to the haircut….the hubby also thought it was outrageous that Edwards’ hairdresser came to him until I reminded him of the time that he needed a haircut and his regular hairdresser was out on maternity leave. Hubby went to the mall for a haircut…..and it wasn’t pretty. When he walked in the door the entire family burst out laughing. At that point, I think he would have forked over a couple hundred to lure his regular away from the baby.
Just to clarify: there was no initial vote Obama cast against the war. He opposed the war but was not in the Senate when they cast the war vote.
What do ya expect a photo of a couple of phonies to look like?
Ekunin; Jane put it to a vote a couple of months ago, on October 12.
Here were the results:
2309 votes cast.
Edwards–998 votes, or 43%
Obama–289 votes, or 13%
Kucinich–247 votes, or 11%
Clinton–236 votes, or 10%
Richardson and Dodd polled less, and I didn’t write down their numbers. Sorry, but I don’t know if we have archives here or not.
What was amazing to me (and heartening, since I’m an Edwards support, but I reserve the right to rag-ass on him and change, if he starts twitching and doing the triangulation boogie) is that Edwards did so well, and Hillary came a poor 4th. :o)
I imagine there have been some changes since them. I’d like to see another poll. Jane? :o)
I wonder what people think of the race issue. It’s the elephant in the living room. Many years ago, perhaps fifty, a lawyer friend tried a personal injury case. His plaintiff client was black. During trial the case was settled. The judge called the jury in to tell them. On learning of the settlement, one juror said, “You mean they gave that nig*er money?” He had been asked before trial if race made a difference and he had answered “No”. The judge removed his name from the jury rolls and that was that. For me it’s between Edwards and Obama. Hillary has pandered so long, I doubt she knows what she really believes, but I’m not sure Obama will get a fair shake, just as I’m not sure a bunch of progressives are the ones to ask.
Ekunin; you got it.
I don’t know about the issue of Obama being black. I would hope that it’s a non-issue, but that’s probably unrealistic. Like you, I could and would support him, enthusiastically, if he’s nominated, or if Edwards can’t gain enough support to continue, and it becomes a two-candidate race.
Of the polls, I’m about at the point that I take most of them with a five pound bag of salt. I think most of the better known ones may be for sale; as in: “Hire us and we’ll get you the result you want.”
A few months ago, Hillary’s staff was trying to get ahead the “electability” issue, and they sponsored what they called an “internal” poll which showed that she had a LOT of support among republican women.
It was, of course patented bullshit. But it’s a good example of what we’re seeing, already.
If you want to see something closer to the true reaction of GOP women to Clinton, check out that clip of a McCain speech, in which Ms. GOP-pearly-Blue-rinse, with venom dripping from her fangs, asked McCain:
“How do we beat the bitch?”
Hillary gets HAMMERED everytime there’s a poll from progressives…in THIS election, when the warpimps are incredibly vulnerable to a landslide, do we want a candidate who’s sucking up to the right, and talking about doing rehab on Colin Powell?
She’s crapped on us right and left; it’s astounding that there are still a fair number of progressives who think that the nomination is some kind of birthright for her.
But, I think that is changing. With any luck, Iowa will take some of the air out of the tires of the Clintonmobile, and we can settle down for a good, long, primary fight, with Iraq becoming the issue for us, that it’s going to be in the general.
