At the Great Orange Satan (thanks Atrios) diarist Bhagamu points out that yet another war enabler’s declared deadline is pending. On September 26, 2007, Sen. Lindsay Graham, rug collector (not at all like Trent Lott is a rug collector), stated:
"If they can’t pull it together in the next 90 days," he said, "I don’t think they are ever gonna do it." He followed that prediction with a promise: "If they don’t deliver in 90 days, I will openly say the chances for political reconciliation are remote." …
Though he would not elaborate on what kind of plan he would push if the Iraqis fail to meet the deadline, Graham did say a change in strategy would be warranted. "If they can’t do it by the end of the year," he said, "how do you justify a continued presence?"
So "half a Friedman" (must Atrios coin all the phrases?). As Bhagamu elaborates, this means the deadline occurs on Christmas Day.
How’s that coming so far?
Iraqi legislators suspended parliamentary sessions yesterday until the end of the month to mark the Muslim religious season – the end of much-delayed efforts to pass U.S.-backed legislation aimed at achieving national reconciliation this year.
When not engaging in amazing discount carpet purchases, Senator Graham is big on predicting stuff. He clearly has the pulse on the Bizarro Universe Iraq where the mortars fire "Bush Rules" T-Shirts and we’re greeted as Liberators. It was, after all, Graham who stated in early September…
Within the next weeks, not months, there will be a major breakthrough on the benchmarks regarding political reconciliation.
When will Graham be asked to say ‘Bad-Bye‘?

About Firedoglake
Well, here you are, Attaturk! And a very fine mornin’ to ya….
Good morning Attaturk!
Now c’mon! All we need are another measly six months to show real progress! We can’t give up now!
Return on success! Return on success!
Finally remembered my manners and went downstairs to tell cinnamonape ya’ll were here…making a right mangle of his/her name in the process. If the powers that be behind the scenes are prioritizing “things to do today”, can we see a show of hands for putting return of teh preview at the top of the list?
O/t -
MSNBC now reporting on dims who didn’t protest torture techniques but did say Harman wrote a classified letter about it. Also claiming the person suspected of the most recent shooting in Colorado did so b/c he was denied access for a place to spend the nite.
the last time Iraqis missed all their ‘meet the benchmarks or else’ benchmarks we got the surge. Naturally, the only thing for Graham to do when they fail the benchmarks again is…SURGE THE SURGE!!!! Yea, that’s the ticket.
Surgin’ is like republican calls for cutting taxes, the more it fails the more its the answer to do it some more.
.
Ya gotta admit, if nothing else, they’re certainly persistent. ;-(
As if anyone in the media would, in fact, keep track of all their promises. The politicians know that their promises are ‘blowing in the wind’ and are only figments of our imaginations. Who will confront these men and their promises? Has anyone ever heard anyone ask Friedman about his ’six-month’ predictions? I don’t believe I have ever read anything about it.
And I am up at 5:00 a.m. in MN because the cats tipped over the Christmas Tree and I was rescuing all the grandkids’ very soggy presents they had wrapped. So the tree is now leaning, minus any water, against the corner of the family room, ornaments on the ledge, the lights on only half the tree, and the poor little star on top is now draping half way down.
That last picture pretty much replicates my mood on the dems in Congress. Pelosi has some answering to do, and, excuse me, but since when is Harmon doing the right thing? Hasn’t she been undermining Pelosi ever since she lost her chairmanship position? Is there some under current of Harmon doing the right thing and pelosi doing the wrong thing?
Since I am ranting, I have not forgiven Pelosi for the “evanhanded” rebuke letter she sent Howard Dean. grumble…grumble…
If you have water present unplug those light!
Good morning, pups. Today it’s Cohen and Krugman in the NYT. Roger Cohen says Barack Obama is right to retain a belief in America’s capacity to inspire; it remains unique. Paul Krugman says that what’s wrong with the mortgage relief plan unveiled by the Treasury secretary is that it reflects the priorities of the administration he serves.

The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven.
GrandmaJ, I sympathize. It’s happened to me too, and my mother before me. What we used to do was run a wire (or clear fishing line to be more invisible) from about the top third of the tree to the wall behind it. In NYC we had a riser pipe so it was easy, but you could probably put in an inconspicuous hook set into a stud for stability. I hope you were able to salvage your ornaments and the presents.
As far as Lindsay Graham is concerned, I’m sure he’ll need at least 1 and possibly 2 Friedman units to rethink his position. Their minds work slowly, you know…
Have a good Monday, everyone.
NOT the best way to start the day (or week) for that matter! Let’s hope it’s not a portent of worse to come. Have you done a “crime scene” investigation to determine how the furry kids managed to do that?
Check the video tape.
I did unplug the lights, but fear it will have to come out of the stand and be repositioned. I, too, used to (when my kids were small) tie the tree to the wall. And I mentioned it last night as they were setting it up. There are 4 cats in this house and I was fearing what my cat would do, but he was sitting beside me at the time the tree went, so I think the other two outside cats were playing ‘climb the tree’ and over it went.
Nothing really harmed, but several of the kids presents are definitely soggy. I expect many tears tomorrow from the 8 year old who spent the day wrapping. I had taken them to ‘Santaville’ where elves help the little ones do shopping, and many of the presents were simply in brown bags with coloring on the outside. The names have now run and cannot be seen. And one small brown bagged present is stuck under the stand where I set the tree back up (with much growning on my part I might add). just another Christmas story to tell I guess.
There are 4 kids, 4 cats, and 3 large dogs in the house, along with a very excitable grandma (me) and one husband and wife team to keep us all on an even keel and all of us coexisting with the tree. Accidents are GOING to happen. :=)
Sounds like it will be a great Christmas story in the future!
“growning” = “groaning”. Of course. one of those ’sounds the same’ and fingers typed what my mind was thinking, without any involvement of the spelling portion of brain.
Further to Graham — it’s not just him. They’re ALL going to need/demand 2 Friedman units. Just enough time for W to skate out of office and leave the steaming pile of $hit that is Iraq for someone else to clean up. Which was probably their plan all along.
LOL! Which is, of course, why we need working Preview and Edit functions! I have every faith that the powers that be are working on it, but until then we’ll have some lovely typos to smile over.
Good morning pups!
Mmmmm, hot chocolate…..
And I am up at 5:00 a.m. in MN because the cats tipped over the Christmas Tree and I was rescuing all the grandkids’ very soggy presents they had wrapped.
Years ago we had cats and we had to tie off the top of the Christmas tree with thread to secure it. Plant hooks are a good thing to tie to if they’re handy.
What did one of them say way back when — we create reality, you study that reality, while we have moved on making a brand new reality, which you will also study studiously.
Sounds about right. They created a situation almost impossible to correct without inflicting more pain, and dare us to stop them. They are holding America hostage, and moving forward with their plans. I fully expect that they hope a dem will be elected in 2008 and all blame will fall on the dems to bear, and not without some merit as anyone who sits idly by watching crimes being committed and not doing anything to stop it, is an accomplice under law. There are NO white knights out there to help us. Not one of the candidates running right now will help us. All corporate money is now flowing into dem coffers so that they, too, will contiue the corporate buyout.
/obviously I am a bit aggitated this a.m. I have to now drive my son to work. It is -5 outside. :) See you later.
Good Morning everyone!
Sorry to hear about the crash GrandmaJ.
*said while stuffing mouth with biscuits from Marion, and here it’s a perfect morning for hot chocolate!

“Sen. Lindsay Graham, rug collector (not at all like Trent Lott is a rug collector)”
I don’t get it. Is rug collector inside slang for high priced rent boy? Are you saying Lindsay doesn’t have to pay for it? Gimme a break.
Aw, Lindsay will say, “It worked!” We had the surge and I was correct.” (And he will no doubt quote part of what John Murtha said to prove it.)
This ain’t rocket science, folks. I don’t understand the glee over Friedman Units, etc. Friedman will never change — neither will the American people who are still using this crap as proof.
Yeah, this spy thingie should have *some* advantages. *g*
I think maybe she’s talking of that rug on his head
raven, any improvement in your water situation down there?
*she asks with fingers crossed*
Zip, nada, zilch, zero. Even with Gov Moonpie prayin!
Lott is a rug collector like Pat Boone is a rug collector…

I thought that “rug collector” was a reference to the Baghdad shopping spree (Green Zone Special) that McCain, Lieberman and Graham went on a few months back…

OT here in NH.
In NH yesterday we were witness to the comic opera known as the Obama and Winfrey show. It had nothing to do with the campaign for president. No issues, no positions, nothing but glitz and glamour from two celebrities out of their league. An embarrassment in a year full of campaign embarrassments.
The message… “vote for BO because he is black, listen to me because I am a black woman with scads of money.”
And just how does this have any bearing on the position of President of the US?
Does anyone really expect a US political campaign to pay little more than a passing lip service to real substantive issues?
It’s all media hype, horse races, pony shoes and kissing babies shit.
We’re a nation of idiots led by an elite who know how to keep the slaves in the dark and lovin in.
It is.
And in regard to Lott it refers to his well-affixed hair-helmet many would call a toupee (or “rug”)
How do we get a heads-up to Olbermann on this matter?
“The message… “vote for BO because he is black, listen to me because I am a black woman with scads of money.”

nomolos –
Well, part of the answer is: Because the two are BLACK and FEMALE. Obama is not my No. 1 choice, but I understand why this Oprah tour is so popular with many Americans. Over half of the U.S. population is FEMALE. A good chunk is BLACK. Those 2 groups have never had a president/VP who really REALLY knows what their lives are like. (And I would guess you wouldn’t know either.)
Most white men don’t understand. But I do.
>>I don’t get it. Is rug collector inside slang for high priced rent boy? Are you saying Lindsay doesn’t have to pay for it? Gimme a break.
Senator Graham ostentatiously bought a rug in a Baghdad market a while back – so that’s why he’s a “rug collector.” Trent Lott is a rug collector of a different sort. Sam Donaldson’s rug ages along with him, a remarkable quality for a toupee.
