I was having dinner at the bar at my corner restaurant when James Taylor came on the World Series to sing and I looked at the old guy next to me and said, “who’s that OLD GUY singing? sounds just like James Taylor!” (laughing of course)

we were such cute little children and then look what happened!

Yup. Traveling across country at the time it seemed that the country was pretty fractious. I got thrown out of places and thrown in jail (Kan, Neb, New Jersey, New York) on a number of occasions just for having long hair and “looking suspicious”.

At one point at Woodstock some of us were fairly certain that the fences would go back up (once “we” were all in) and the bombs would come down. A major “sting” operation. Get rid of most of us weirdoes in one shot. Paranoid? Yes.

Go figure.

(laughing) my patrol car had an am/fm radio in it in addition to the police radio – working swing shift, come fridays, i would be driving down the main drag in town listening to kfog and that song would come on. it always cracked me up to imagine the reactions of the folks now driving ever so carefully around me as i was listening to the anthem.

Thisis my protest song. Sadly no one has youtubed the offical video of the full length version. It translates to White Spell in english. But the song is pure defiance *grins*. It’s also from my favorite adaptation of Journey to the West, in which the ultimate rebels go west towards enlightenment and still remain themselves at the end. This version makes them ALL anti-heroes. Hence the gun toting, chain smoking Buddhist priest. XD Buncha troublemakers, and sooo dear to my heart.

It’s why i started looking more closely into buddhism in the first place, so i could understand what the show itself was about in essence AND what it was also making fun of. Because the original stories are as much satire as they are lessons. *grins*

Good morning, pups. Today in the NYT it’s MoDo, Friedman and Rich. MoDo says Mitt’s no JFK. She says Mitt Romney was right when he said that “Americans do not respect believers of convenience.” Now if he would only admit he’s describing himself. Mr. Friedman says that unless there is more reconciliation within the countries in the Middle East, it is hard to see how there will be more reconciliation between them. Frank Rich titled his column “The Republicans Find Their Obama.” He says the real reason for Mike Huckabee’s ascendance may be that his message is more uplifting than that of rivals whose main calling cards are fear and nativism. Unfortunately, he completely ignores the fact that Huckabee is also a card-carrying lunatic.

I’m reserving judgment on that for now, I think.

Though in this morning’s e-mail is a nice offer for a temp legal job (6-8 weeks, and I could use the cash) and I got a Victoria’s Secret card too.

If that temp job will allow to me run off for an hour or two now and again to take care of some pre-scheduled hearings, it could be sweet. May be a good morning after all. I’ve earned one after Friday’s Ordeal.

My son, my only child, text-messaged me at 3:30 Thurs night/Fri morning – he was looking for a gun to shoot himself with.

Spent all Fri morning running from judge to judge trying to figure out how to lasso him in for involuntary commitment. Finally, just as I was on the phone to set that into motion, he called. I talked him into coming to see me.

After a few hours, got him turned around, a new plan in place on how to deal with what was eating him up, and some phone calls made to get the processes started.

After several hours, he’d calmed down and I could actually see my son in there again. He left upbeat, but then again I didn’t hear from him yesterday. So if I came across as a little grouchy yesterday – just tired and nervous.

Hoping it’s good now, but I’d sure like to hear from him today….

An interesting dustup between Obama and Krugman.

I read Krugman fairly regularly, and he has expressed qualified approval of Obama’s healthcare plan. But, when Obama started attacking his rivals for healthcare plans that mandate participation, Krugman objected quite eloquently. Now Obama is going after Krugman with silliness like this:

KRUGMAN THEN: Krugman Talked To An Architect Of Obama’s Plan Who Said “Obama Is Reluctant To Impose A Mandate That Might Not Be Enforceable.” Paul Krugman wrote, “I asked David Cutler, a Harvard economist who helped put together the Obama plan, about this omission. His answer was that Mr. Obama is reluctant to impose a mandate that might not be enforceable, and that he hopes — based, to be fair, on some estimates by Mr. Cutler and others — that a combination of subsidies and outreach can get all but a tiny fraction of the population insured without a mandate.” [New York Times, 6/4/07]

KRUGMAN NOW: “Most Troubling, Mr. Obama Accuses His Rivals Of Not Explaining How They Would Enforce Mandates” And Said He Was Implying That The Plans Would Require “Nasty, Punitive Enforcement.” Paul Krugman wrote, “Third, and most troubling, Mr. Obama accuses his rivals of not explaining how they would enforce mandates, and suggests that the mandate would require some kind of nasty, punitive enforcement.” [New York Times, 11/30/07]

KRUGMAN NOW: “Obama Is Storing Up Trouble For Health Reformers” By Criticizing Mandates. Paul Krugman wrote, “Finally, Mr. Obama is storing up trouble for health reformers by suggesting that there is something nasty about plans that ‘force every American to buy health care.’” [New York Times, 12/7/07]

What’s wrong with these Obama people? Their “KRUGMAN THEN” is a quote via Krugman from one of their own campaign advisors.

Universal healthcare is a public good, and providing public goods via voluntary (non-mandatory) taxation, however it’s disguised and collected, doesn’t work so all that well.

Re: Pelosi knowing about the torture. We need to be careful about the sourcing in this. There are two “official” sources for the article, at least one appears to be a Congressman. The other appears to be a CIA official who was either directing or performing the “interrogation”.

Here’s my logic. The only individuals familiar with what these individuals actually saw in the briefing would be the participants themselves. The programs are so secret that the complaints regarding them are not even typed up by staffers, they are handwritten. Recall that Rockefeller complained about the FISA violations regarding domestic surveillance and wrote a copy of his own letter so that he could use it later.

So the fact that the briefing was made by a “virtual tour”, that it included waterboarding, who the Congressional Leaders who were present, the details of discussion means that the “sources” were individuals who were actually present. Roberts, according to the article, was not available for comment. I doubt Rockefeller would be the source (nor his predecessor Graham…who has denied being given any such information about waterboarding in any case). Pelosi wouldn’t be the source. That leaves only one Congressional source.

PORTER GOSS. And Goss later became CIA Director during the critical period when the recordings were destroyed. He was the one responsible for the appointment of Jose Rodriguez, the “model for Jack Bauer”, who destroyed the tapes. He was the one that forced the resignations or firings of dozens of CIA officers in the operations division because they were “not aggressive enough” in dealing with al Qaida and terrorism.

He’s gonna be one that most likely authorized the destruction of the tapes, me thinks. So we have a source who would be very intent on suggesting that no one objected to the torture. And note the careful phrasing.

a congressional source familiar with Pelosi’s position on the matter said the California lawmaker did recall discussions about enhanced interrogation. The source said Pelosi recalls that techniques described by the CIA were still in the planning stage — they had been designed and cleared with agency lawyers but not yet put in practice — and acknowledged that Pelosi did not raise objections at the time.

Hmm! How could a Congressional Source KNOW what Pelosi did or didn’t do AT THE TIME. How would they KNOW what she was familiar with? Remember that this was strictly classified information. The only “source” who could even have had a chance to know whether she had said anything at the meeting who appears to be talking is PORTER GOSS. Add to this fact that he would be the only one to know if Pelosi wrote a letter of complaint, as CIA Director (if he actually looked at the files and the WH provided him with it).

This reminds me a little bit of the effort that Scooter Libby tried to use to make himself up as a “Congressional aide”.

Who is the “second official” then? My suspicion is, since there needs to be a confirming source, is that this represents the CIA official who briefed the Congressional Intelligence Committee representatives. That would be someone who directed the torture interrogation programs. Rodriguez was “unavailable for comment” so perhaps it was one of the interrogators themselves. Amazing that they would be talking to the media when the whole rationale behind this was to protect their identities! The risk was supposedly to come from the carefully proscribed court process? Seems that this doesn’t fall under the “protected source” criteria that Congress just authorized for “reporter-source” protection, BTW.

So why would a CIA official even risk reporting this unless they themselves were one of those under threat of Prosecution…as all of this would have come out during any sort of trial IF TRUE.

But here we appear to have two individuals very concerned about covering up their own roles in the destruction of the tapes. appearing as sources asserting that Pelosi and either Rockefeller or Graham were informed about waterboarding and made no objections. Maybe Pelosi will insist that the CIA release the Virtual Tour to Congress, and investigate just who is sourcing all this material.

BTW Recall that Mukasey is running his own investigation of the CIA’s Inspector General who is looking into just such criminal activities by the CIA. The IG was the one that initially brought the tapes to the attention of the courts.
