Hey, Late Niters! Phoenix Woman here, holding down the Late Nite fort.
Got a weird-ass video for you to enjoy. It’s by a group of stringband musicians that collectively go by the name of "Uncle Earl", an homage to the great country/bluegrass banjo player (and all around nice guy) Earl Scruggs. The tune is an old Appalachian fiddle tune called "Streak o’ Lean, Streak o’ Fat", the singing is done in Mandarin, and the piano player is John Paul Jones. No, not that John Paul Jones. That John Paul Jones.
It is what it is, and no, you haven’t dropped any acid recently. (Not that I know of, anyway.)

flashback, PW, flashback
PW!
Heh, all those zzz’s coulda cost ya! ;-)
BFL’s not an abuser, CT (cough cough). Twas for emphasis I believe and not something done in every comment (ducking)
I have not yet begun to fight.Ooops, wrong John Paul Jones.
Ha!
I’m thinking purple microdot or maybe some Vitamin Special K.
Seems the new FDL is resulting in a bump in hits, and big bump in pageviews (which would make sense with the new design).
http://www.sitemeter.com/?a=st…..&r=12
I hope that maintains and grows, and translates into more ad revenue.
Evening all,
Those tap dancing steps at the beginning were so unexpected, lovely.
That sitemeter sure is a beautiful thing, bonkers.
Dang, a vast left-wing conspiracy… :P
Well, indeed, not something one sees everyday. May I suggest a science education near equivalent? http://video.google.com/videop…..=SubGenius
This is not only weird, but also damned funny (and educational! how can you lose?)
Too much fun, PW!
Belated hat tip going out to eCAHNomics in the front page news box alongside Scott Horton’s article in Harpers, “Obstruction of Justice at the CIA”.
So, is it Late Nite, or Late Night?
Seems to depend on who’s hosting.
Good evening all! I must confess I am ignorant in the ways of blogdom. I assume that the vast majority of bloggers do it for fun and never make a dime. If popularity develops then advertisers become interested, ads are sold which help feed the servers and at some point a profit may actually be seen. Is this pretty much how it goes? Not complaining or anything, I know it costs to keep the servers up and am just wondering how things work.
Cloggin’ Tiger, Fiddlin’ Dragon!
Or maybe “Kill Hill Bill”!
This very cool! Gonna show this to some folks here in Singapore and get their reaction!
No. George Soros pays for everything.
He is a bit behind, however, and I’m still waiting for my check.
Fun tune, PW. I had to dance a little jig in the living room.
Aren’t we all? Oh, wait from Soros… Hmmm…
Well, yeah, I hear that a lot. For a guy with so much money he sure is behind on the payroll ;0)
lurkers now have to reload the entire page to read new comments (the “new comments” function only works if you are logged in). so it may be comparing apples and oranges.
Y’all don’t reckon PW has a little hillbilly in her do ya? *g*
Howdy y’all!!!!!!!
I miss Steve Martin’s banjo playing.
This goes for all of Liberal Blognia-Herzegovinia, but we really need to grow our numbers more. After the initial explosion of blogs, it seems to me that things have tapered off somewhat (yes, the FDL stats are encouraging!)
This movement must gain strength and steal as much audience as possible from Conglomerate Media outlets. I can’t wait to see the headline, “Russert Meets the Pink Slip After Ratings Plummet.” Of course, most here know ratings have very little to do with it.
Over the Holidaze, please everyone tell every relative, friend, or co-worker to check out places like FDL. It’s is essential in making this movement more influential and sustainable.
Y’all don’t reckon PW has a little hillbilly in her do ya? *g*
a definite bluegrass streak
Hey Cassie! How goes the exams? And how’s Betsy feeling?
Snark, how’s Auntie doing?
Great video, PW!
Kung Fu Bluegrass cain’t be all bad behind these nice purple barrels?
Eureka: Only a little — paternal grandfather’s people were from Appalachia by way of Mizzou.
I like it… fyi, I don’t think that is tap-dancing, I believe it is clogging… a specialty of Appalachia…
This is actually more old-time country than bluegrass, but yeah. :-)
Didn’t start exams yet. Still doing projects and papers.
Betsy is doing a little better and not as sad. But the other doctor said the spinal cord thing prob won’t help her either. Her parents came today and they’re doing some errands tomorrow to help out.
OldCoastie — correct, it’s clogging. Though tap dancing is a close cousin.
Cassie, give Betsy a hug from all of us!
love to betsy.
Cassie, give Betsy a hug from all of us!
ditto (but a gentle one please)
I will!
I’m wondering if we’ll ever see a subscription-type setup here. I’d definitely do a certain amount a month. Would prefer that over a bunch of animated ads. Either way, more money is great for blogs. Raw Story actually employs reporters. That’s been something missing for the most part in the netroots, and that’s our own reporters. We still mostly rely on reporters paid by Conglomerates, and then get commentary based on those reports.
Imagine having our information gathered by rabid lambs. More money could allow that happen more and more, since they could travel people and pay salaries. At least that’s what I’d like to see. Others may feel differently.
I second PW on a hug or four for Betsy!
haha, PW! That’s just the mishmash of genre that i absolutely love. ^_^
Very cool! now i have to show it to a couple of friends. XD and put it on my personal blog just because it’s so danged weird–and fun.
Aah, that’s not good news… 8-(
Yeah she was mad when they said she is not a candidate for the surgery and now the other thing too, but she is going to get a second opinion at a univ hospital someplace else.
like it… fyi, I don’t think that is tap-dancing, I believe it is clogging… a specialty of Appalachia…
Old Coastie, this is Irish dancing. But Country Music is pretty Irish. When the English told the Irish they couldn’t dance, they came up with this sort of dancing where it was all legs, so the English couldn’t see in the windows that they were dancing! The movement was all below window level.
Best wishes to Betsy!!!
by the way hello all you firepups… and yes I’m new… and keep up the good snark!!
Like you! 8-)
Hiya bassplayer!!
Hiya new bassplayer.
Sorry to hear about her frustration and disappointment. Second opinions are always a good idea, and hopefully they will find something to relieve her discomfort (((betsy))).
welcome, bassplayer. always looking for an addition to rhythm section here at the lake.
:P
Snarky, are you going to Netroots Nation? If not, are you interested in babysitting?
Unnnh Damn! Can I have that acid now?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fsDL24o8uM
thank you Suzanne I’d love to help.
CT-sent you a FB message this am.
It’s wonderful, isn’t it?
Wow! never heard that one before… but it still looks like clogging to me… had a friend from the mountains of North Carolina – old Scottish stock – and I’m pretty sure she would call that “clogging”… but it wouldn’t surprise me that it came over from the Northern part of the Isles!
Loo Hoo I want to go, but maybe not for the whole time. Who needs baby-sitting?
i suggested a subscription (like kos has, or even salon – pay for the privilege of supporting fdl and for not having to see the ads). i especially like the idea because it builds a revenue stream that is not dependent on corporations… which is nice in case someone ever runs a campaign to get advertisers to boycott fdl.
but it may be important in the long run also… there’s a reason that pacifica radio sounds so much different than npr – and i’m convinced that the big reason is the source of funds. pacifica is wholely listener supported. other examples are consumer reports and ms. magazine – both have to avoid advertisers in order to keep editorial control.
are we willing to put our $ where our mouth is in order to support independent media?
Dancing the Boogie
Yes.
The YouTube dance is kind of a mix, here’s some pure Irish.
Selise the radio network Aunt Betsy does the news for is listener supported also. Head On Radio.
OMG…Bush’s big fanfare mortgage savior move today…well…got sort of skewed….too funny:
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/
Heh, ATA is arranging some charter flights, nicknamed; the Sugarcane Express… *g*
Oooo…another bass player like myself. Could this be in FDL’s future?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=oisb3f2_wgA
I’m really looking forward to it. Bummer that Colt has to go all the way to NYC just to look happy for Tim Tebow.
Bonkers — Yeah. Reporting costs a lot of money, because it involves travel; not everything can be done from a computer keyboard.
Nice! And in authentic wooden clogs, from what I could see.
I have an acquaintance from a neighboring city who is going, but doesn’t know quite what to do with her 3? year old daughter. I thought if you might be interested in being where the action is and making some money, you may consider babysitting at the hotel. Let me know if you are interested, and I’ll hook you up with Rachel.
thanks! always like to hear about non-corporate media!
It’d be the first time a Sophomore ever won it…!
Loo Hoo that would be cool! But she would have to bring toys and stuff. There is nothing in that neighborhood for 3 yr olds.
Yes. But I doubt enough people are, or Jane would have made it without the advertising. I really haven’t paid much attention to the ads, are they offensive?
Selise she does news and blogging for them. And I have been on the radio a bunch of times.
I guess that’s why I feel so trongly about growing the numbers around here. Without marketing money, it’s gonna take A LOT of word-of-mouth and grassroots marketing to take this to the next level.
Sure, a certain percent of us will subscribe, but I wonder if that would be enough to have a reporter or two, travel, etc. That’s going to take many more people than we currently have, if I had to guess. So far so good though, so I’m hopeful!
I think he’s a lock. If not him then the guy from Arkansas who’s name escapes me. Strength of schedule is in his favor, the SEC is the toughest conference bar none.
Every mom of a toddler travels with a stock of kiddie entertainment, if only to save her sanity.
it was a short visit. gotta go. getting shood into bed. bye!
Riddle me this… When I was coming up it was called buck dancing, then it morphed into clogging. I don’t think (pray god and please forgive me if I’m mistaken) it was a racist thing. This ring a bell with anyone?
PW, If still around. Do you know of or like:
The Waterboys “Fishermans Blues” Royal Albert Hall, 11/05/07
Snarky, email me and I’ll get you guys hooked up.
g’nite cassie
ES, I’m obviously not PW — but that is a great song :-)
tomorrow Loo Hoo. bye.
Loudoun – The album/CD is named the same and fantastic all the way through.
The Pac10 or the Big Ten might disagree, but, to be the only one unblemished, and, 22-1 over the last two seasons, by the way, while Boise State shocked the nation, the Warriors handed Ariz.St. a whoopin’! *g*
i just meant it as something that might be considered in the future. it takes a large readership and large donor base to support something like that…. and it probably wouldn’t ever replace corporate ads.
ES, The Waterboys are way underrated IMO. They had a great sound.
thanks for the video, PW – g’night all.
g’nite OC
They can disagree all they want, doesn’t change things. The Heisnmanisn’t the greatest anyway. Remember Gino Toretta ?
I am having a problem with this Web site. I’m pretty sure it didn’t start until the change to the new format. Often when I am reading comments and I click on the page down arrow on the screen, it is frozen. Nothing happens at first. Then after a few seconds, it suddenly scrolls down. When this is happening, the rectangular tab thing on the up/down bar to the right of the screen won’t move, either. Also, sometimes, like right now, when I am typing a comment in the response box, the letters don’t appear on the screen until several seconds after I type them.
Is this an FDL site thing, or a PC thing, or a Windows thing, or an Internet Explorer thing? Please don’t tell me to buy a Mac. I am hopelessly addicted to PCs, although at times like this I wonder why.
Any suggestions, anyone (other than buy a Mac)?
I tried restarting my computer and made sure I didn’t have any other windows open. No help.
Bushie is losing on the military home front: From the LA Times
Or OJ…! ;-)
Hey Loo Hoo,
Avalon-Dance.com is very cool. A Slovak group, Mr. ChristineEdmonson says…
Our daughter used to belong to an Irish dance association. The competition is pretty tough.
I usually lurk, but I couldn’t resist commenting on the G’earls. I know them and they are all fantastically talented. Abigail, the banjo player, lived in China for a a while and speaks Mandarin, which is why there’s such a weird crossover. The dancing is definitely clogging, Appalachian style, with an homage to it’s Irish roots. I love this video! And the fiddler, Reyna Gellert, rocks. And they do play Old Time String Band Music, which is sort of “pre-Bluegrass” I am glad to see it made FDL!
I know of the Waterboys — we used to be heavily into Irish music. There’s a local band called The Irish Brigade (aka Mike Wallace and Sean Conway) that have played around the Midwest for just about thirty years now, and back when we could stay up ’til 1 AM on work nights we used to hang out at the Half Time Rec and listen to them do Irish tunes old and new (with a few interesting ones in the third set, when everyone was rowdy and lubricated).
Nite, OC!
Good evening dear friends.
I have the same problems you mention, and I do use a mac.
Beerfart Liberal!!!!!!!
I see you got #1.
I am still slow here, what with all the commotion.
So, I am straddling two threads.
BFL, if you have not read the last thread of late, let me say again thank you for your comment about the experience of having a transgendered person in your family. Really one of those comments that makes FDL the best of the best.
Check it out, everyone!!!!!
And, thanks my stalwart FDL friend for posting the short version of Ms. Pelosi “talking the talk” when she got her award goodies from the HRC, in part I’m sure for being so “sensitive” re: the transgender issue. (Words are cheap):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjNJ8F9REek
Pelosi hearts transgendered- back then…
Hmmmm. Have you tried FireFox? (http://www.firefox.com)
Buck dancing? Yep – we used ta do it in Texas after a great kill of 14 or more points of super venison. Being high kinda helped, too. It made the deer stand shake, though, and one time it caught fire when the ethanol burner tumped over. Jumping down 10ft with your pants on fire with a loaded rifle, drunk also, was a sight.
don’t know about this racial thang, though.
((((TexBetsy!!!))))
neuro, are all your patches and updates up to date? it sounds like there may be another application running in the background that is hanging you up. are you running spyware or adware or the like? those do tend to run in the background.
Surprise surprise! For the last few weeks the CBS evening news has done a human interest story on a soldier coming home to surprise his or her family. The children are beyond happy of course, and then they mention in passing that mom or dad is headed back overseas in a week or two. It makes me so angry I want to put my fist through the TV.
hugs back ((PW))
Hi Wascall! Tell Rayna and the g’Earls hello from their fan base (me!) at FDL!
The Lake is wondrous! Such an eclectic group is a rare find indeed…! 8-)
Hey, my daughter was in Irish dance too, mixed in the middle of tap, jazz and ballet!
From the same LA times Article:
That is a big shift.
Hey, I gotta go soak my head and then sleep, so g’night everyone! Have fun!
Is she still dancing? (that’s a LOT of dance)
Nite, PW!
night PW. Sleep wll.
Good for them, they are realizing that this administration does not have their best interests at heart.
Hi all! TexBetsy ’specially.
Quite a day, eh?
I’m not noticing the other, but am getting a time delay on my typing, not major just noticable. XP running firefox 2.0.
Betsy, how are you feeling?
Cannot. Access. TBogg’s. Stuff.
Tech problems continue to plague me on this new site.
Hope someone is looking into it.
Thanks.
No, not now. She’s working and going to school. She sure has fond memories though, and we have lots of pics. How about your daughter? Still dancing
Suzanne, we are dealing with a very low level of technical expertise here. How do I determine whether my patches and updates are up to date, and what do I do if they are not?
I am using Norton antivirus software. Not aware of any other applications running.
I do have Firefox but have not got in the habit of using it. I will try it now and see if there is any difference.
No, she pretty much gave it up when work took over in high school. She’s away in graduate school now, but tells me that every now and again at parties, she breaks into a jig.
I will. Thanks for posting this video. I love old time music myself, and hope one day to play the fiddle half as good as Reyna.
fwiw, the site is running very slowly for me now too, typing delays and all that. FF PC. But I think that is some kind of temporary issue, as I was okay on the site (new) yesterday and earlier today. So, no one panic yet!
lisa – I just came back from TBogg, and it loads fine for me (Mac, Firefox). Try another widow or tab and see if you can hit it then…
Suz, I am woefully behind here at FDL these days — but I was scanning previous threads yesterday and saw your Blues Brothers thread, and was immediately sorry that I wasn’t here for it. Looked like it was a blast!
Loo Hoo I am doing better emotionally and physically than yesterday. And my folks are here for the weekend, and running errands for me, which is great.
Robert Greenwald has another video out, The War on Greed.
Contest involved. What would you do for the holidays?
I’ve been using Firefox and am not having any problems. When confronted with the new small type interface, Firepups have helped me (twice) find the control+ to enlarge, and then enlarge again (and BOLD) the type for my bifocal lenses. And, my preview is great.
Were you nice?
things are looking up. Had a rethug colleague walk up to me today and complain rather vocally about shrub’s NIE press conference on Tuesday. People I’ve never even heard talking about politics are complaining about that press conference. I’m happy :)
That sounds about right for where I was introduced to it. Good ole boys in the hills.
Why oh why am I getting such a sinking feeling about W’s upcoming Israel trip?
It seems the NIE release sets him to go deliver the message “Welp, ‘fraid it’s lookin’ like our hands are kinda tied now, so we’re just not gonna be able to drop The Big One on Teheran, like we’ve been planning all along… SO… it’s kinda lookin’ like .you. guys are gonna have to do the dirty work for the both o’ us.”
I just don’t think PNAC are gonna give up after coming all this way. And the more the domestic pressure ratchets up, the more desperate they get, and the more likely they are to act. And now I’m starting to harbor suspicions they’ve been playing the Israelis all along. And I’m seeing W’s WWIII comment in October as being not about US/Israel v. Iran, as it was widely interpreted, but rather Israel v. Iran/Russia.
Hmmm.
Glad to hear it, Betsy. No fun at all. I have a friend going in for surgery on her polio stricken leg next week. They’ll take bone from the knee to put in the ankle.
Hi Loo Hoo…
Nice is relative, as you know :-)
Time for bed-night all!
And loose nukes flying across the country is no comfort, either. Why haven’t we heard any reports on this?
Now I’m going to have to go check newtonusr!!
g’night madmommy
sleep well madmom.
now wait a minute, I know I didn’t post twice! hmmmm…
How’s the weather down there, Loo Hoo? You got slides I hear…
Nite, MM! Aloha, LL, nice to see ya at the Lake! *g*
Exactly. It’s not clear that we don’t have a loose nuke from Minot-Barksdale at the moment.
Oooh, we back. Did I break us?
*tap* *tap* is this thing turned on…?
whoa….okay. now it’s back. *pokepoke*
By the way? My friends LOVED that vid, PW!
After sayin’ that all is well, I’ve just had a hell of a time for the last 15 minutes. Hey All!
It was The Rapture, wasn’t it?
Hey, can we keep all this stuff?
Spent some time over at the treehouse. Freak out time there.
is it real? is it here? am i dreaming.
What does it say when I reply to MYSELF?
Huh? We can’t take it…? ;-)
Just watched KO. Wow.
Hey Tex,
Thinking of you — are you dreaming?
No mudslides right around here, at least no danger for me. It’s going to rain a lot, which we need. Last week was a nice gentle, steady rain. Be nice if it were like that again. How about you bay area folks?
Freak out in a good way, or freak out in a bad way?
Coldish and rainy in Oakland. Nothing too severe as far as I know.
It’s gentle here now. Mild rain.
Just some oddities from the news
Bernie Ward, the odd and irascible late-night talk radio host from N. California has been arrested for possession of Child porn. Ward, a former Catholic Priest, is famous for being an “investigator” of everything from UFO’s to the (/11 conspiracy. He asserts that his downloading images was done for a book he was writing on the Catholic churches pedophilia scandal.

Heh heh: Plume de Guerre.
I may be a little punchy.
Hop over there and see what you think. TRex is going for calm, but the changes, “Chachachanges” are evident.
What happened at the treehouse? Shows December 3rd now.
Up to December 6.
I wish I could say the same thing…
http://www.hawaiitribune-heral…..ocal01.txt
Actually, Loo Hoo, T just posted a new one…
http://www.iamtrex.com/?p=43#comments
When I couldn’t get back here, I spent some time at the treehouse. TRex is happier than ever! And he has fans out the wazoo. Some people were unhappy that he is gone here, and change is hard for many.
cookies?
or chanukah cookies?
Whatever is your favorite.
New Suzanne upstairs
or Ham?
OY!!
Yow. No more ancient riverbeds being unearthed in Napoopoo like the other week, I hope. That was a creepy thing.
It was the tourists, right? Taking Pele’s nasty rocks on the bus again? She totally hates that shit.
I’m a fan of this latest incarnation of Uncle Earl. Saw them on teevee earl-ier this year and grabbed a copy of Waterloo, Tennessee. Very fine musicians. Their web site provides an intriguing account of their adventure in the UK, having dinner with the Joneses and learning what clever clocks they are, jamming all night, and getting sick from the damp. Great fun.
I recommend also Tim O’Brien, another artist who’s become a habitue of Nashville. Cornbread Nation, Crossings, Fiddler’s Green, and Traveler have some mighty fine music on them. Remarkable voice.
OK, Firepups,
As much as I enjoyed TRex’s new site, I can’t figure out how to comment (and there are lots of comments). teh stupid. Help me.
christine, type your name and email add and comment. there’s a form at the bottom.
Ain’t that the truth… Hawaii Volcanoes N.P. has a whole wall of letters sent with boxes of rock sent back, many times with precise directions of where they picked ‘em up… Some serious sh*t befell them…
BTW, Suz, has a new thread up…
