(First let me say I love FDL’s new look and the additions of Marcy and TBogg. This site rocks. And now on to Late Night…)
Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive….
Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee is on the ropes after his repeated denials that he recommended parole for Arkansas rapist and murderer Wayne Dumond. For background on the Wayne Dumond case, check out Byron York’s article today at the National Review.
It began in September 1984, when Dumond, a 35-year-old handyman, kidnapped and raped a 17-year-old high-school cheerleader in the small eastern-Arkansas town of Forrest City. Dumond was allowed to remain free on bond while awaiting trial, and in March 1985 two masked men entered his house, tied him up with fishing line, and castrated him. People were stunned; the case, already notorious, became much more so. And that was before the local sheriff, a rather colorful man named Coolidge Conlee, displayed Dumond’s severed testicles in a jar of formaldehyde on his desk in the St. Francis County building. Amid tons of publicity, Dumond was found guilty and sentenced to life plus 20 years.
The case took on a political coloring when it became known that the victim was a distant cousin of Bill Clinton. After conviction, Dumond, who claimed he was innocent, asked Clinton for clemency. Clinton declined.
For details about what Huckabee knew about Dumond and when he knew it, see Murray Waas’ article at the Huffington Post yesterday. Also, here’s a detailed chronology (pdf) of events concerning the case.
York interviewed Huckabee last August about his role in Dumond’s release.
Last August, Huckabee told me he had his doubts about Dumond’s guilt, and also felt sorry for him over the castration attack.
Huckabee didn’t parole Dumond, the parole board did that. But Huckabee confirmed to CNN that he wrote Dumond a letter, which, as quoted by Byron York, said in part:
“Dear Wayne,” Huckabee wrote in a letter to Dumond. “My desire is that you be released from prison. I feel that parole is the best way for your reintroduction to society to take place.”
Today, Huckabee told Wolf Blitzer on CNN’s Situation Room:
BLITZER: Well, what responsibility do you have in this horrible tragedy that developed?
HUCKABEE: Wolf, my only official action in this was I denied his commutation. It was actual given by Jim Guy Tucker when Bill Clinton was governor back in 1992. It was on my desk. I did consider it. I even thought that he met the criteria for parole in support of it.
I wish I hadn’t. But I didn’t parole him. And governors don’t parole people in Arkansas, nor can they stop a parole. And that’s the tragedy, I think, that this went through several years and many different people. And all of us failed. That’s the truth. All of us failed.
Huckabee, today on CNN, charged the story was being politicized.
"There are families who are truly, understandably and reasonably, grief stricken," Huckabee said. "And for people to now politicize these deaths and to try to make a political case out of it rather than to simply understand that a system failed and that we ought to extend our grief and heartfelt sorrow to these families, I just regret politics is reduced to that."
Now the parole board members are coming out of the woodwork. From ABC News, here’s Huckabee’s latest version:
"At their invitation, I went to their meeting. Someone brought up his case," Huckabee said Tuesday, describing his meeting with the board. "Frankly it was simply part of a broader discussion. I did not ask them to do anything."
Not so, says Butch Reeves who served as Huckabee’s criminal justice counsel and in that capacity worked on all clemency requests.
[Reeves'] account of a key 1996 meeting between then-Gov. Huckabee and the state parole board largely supports an earlier version of the meeting by former board member Charles Chastain. It contrasts with Huckabee’s position that he did not pressure the board.
In a phone interview, Reeves said Huckabee told the board members he thought there was "something nefarious" about the criminal justice system in Dumond’s case, and that the rapist got a "raw deal." Huckabee said he believed Dumond’s sentence, originally a life sentence plus 20 years, was "way out of bounds" for his crime, raping a 17-year-old high school student.
Reeves says he even put Huckabee on the phone with one of Dumond’s alleged rape victims. Murray Waas also talked to Reeves today receiving much of the same information as ABC News. Murray adds,
In a 2002 story I wrote for the Arkansas Times about Huckabee’s role in freeing Dumond, four board members — three of who spoke on the record — said that Huckabee lobbied and pressured board members on the matter. This included the 1996 parole meeting at which the board’s recording secretary — who ordinarily tapes the entire sessions — was asked to leave the room. Several board members and members of the state legislature have said the secret session violated state law.
Huckabee should have been more honest in the first place. There’s nothing wrong with granting clemency or supporting parole. During his term as Governor he granted clemency to hundreds of drug offenders serving excessively long sentences. More Governors should do it.
There also were legitimate doubts about Dumond’s guilt in the Ashley Stevens’ rape case, involving scientific evidence and her identification of Dumond, which were discussed by the appellate courts in his appeals. (Opinions here, here, here and here (pdf).) In addition, Dumond did get a disproportionately high sentence. According to his lawyer, John Wesley Hall, Dumond was the only person charged [added: in St. Francis County] with rape or murder who was sentenced to more than 10 years in the five years before and after the Stevens rape. (Disclosure: Hall is a contributing author on TalkLeft, writing as Last Night in Little Rock.)
Instead of saying, "Yes, I believed Dumond should have been paroled, his sentence was too long, there were doubts about his guilt and I made my thoughts known to the parole board," Huckabee is all over the map, saying he didn’t know a lot about the case; he denied clemency and didn’t pressure the parole board; it’s former Governor Jim Tucker’s fault for reducing Dumond’s sentence to 39 1/2 years, making him eligible for parole; Bill Clinton must have known about it; and on and on.
Sometimes the truth will set you free. I think it’s too late now for Huckabee. He’s caught in a Willie Horton trap, and it’s a web of his own making.
Which is really too bad, because while I don’t want any Republican as President, someone like Huckabee who is willing to exercise clemency, even if wrong sometimes, is preferable to a candidate like Giuliani who is so intent on furthering his law and order image that he is only capable of showing compassion for former offenders who happen to be his cronies and business associates.

Liar Liar pants on fire?
g’evening jeralyn and pups.
Good topic Jeralyn.
Liar Liar pants on fire?
is why i call him the huckster.
So, what’s the deal? They really wanna go with Bootie Bandit Ghouliani? Gonna take down Mork Romney and Reverend Huckelberry?
Huck ain’t the only liar getting called out tonight. Bush gets burned.
spider pictures freak me out.
Hmmm… As I was watching it, that was running thru my mind… Howdy, Ma’am…
Howdy CT.
selise, if ya hang down here in the comments, ya don’t even see the picture :)
Tonight at work (a mega Baptist church) the pre-school director brought this up. Since the conversation was taking place where it was I was more than stunned to find that she was blown away that Huckleberry would do such a thing in the first place, and then lie to try to cover it up later, especially as he is a Baptist minister. I clued her in to the backstory and reminded her of the context (Clinton as Satan). She said she had been leaning towards Huck as the rest of the GOP were non-starters, but this has totally turned her off. I gently suggested there are a few candidates on the D side that might be worth a look. Baby steps!
nice baby steps, madmommy. the gentle approach sometimes works best to help folks see the truth.
Keep it alive, wrecker!
Hi everyone. Yes, the graphic is a little creepy but I thought appropriate. It was either that or the you tube version of Dwight Yoakam’s Aint That Lonely Yet…
Cool madmom! Good for you.
Maybe they’ll drift back to The Bootie Bandit, who’s now casting himself as Reagan Reincarnate.
My late great mother-in-law had the perfect description: He lies when the truth would serve him better.
Great post, Jeralyn! You rawk, too.
Hey Tex, hope tonight’s a better night for ya.
Most Excellent! From a SB Minister, Priceless! *g*
I really like the job as it works well with the kid situation, but it is a chore to constantly censor myself so as not to go off on a spit-spewing, profanity laced rant. I could be wrong, but my guess is that would not go over well.
Better physically. Difficult emotionally.
One of the things I LOVE about this place:
BOTH sides of the judicial issue are aired.
You guys are so fair.
Kudos
And the cover up is ALWAYS the problem!
BTW-
WASHINGTON (CNN) – President Bush was told in August that Iran’s nuclear weapons program “may be suspended,” the White House said Wednesday, which seemingly contradicts the account of the meeting given by Bush Tuesday…
welp… ABC reported tonight that American life expectancy dropped this year for the first time since the Civil War… possibly by as much as 5 years for children since shrub took power. Huckabee have a faith-based solution to this problem?
Jeralyn, how wonderful to see you at Late Nite on the new FDL.
Me no like Hucklebee.
You know how to reach me…
{{{!!}}}
God Bless, for your sacrifice! Careful, ya might be ex-communicated otherwise… ;-)
one love wangdangdoodle!
But, but, but…he plays bass! And is the kind of guy you could see yourself having an O’Doule’s with.
Nope, between the multiple marraiges, the kids who can’t stand him and the flip-flopping he’s a no-go. I did manage to slide in a few references to his failings as mayor, and what his former constituents think of him. Actually, I am getting pretty good at sliding things into conversation in a very subtle manner.
Agreed Teddy. Welcome Jeralyn.
Jeralyn… I loves me some some spiders, being a biologist.
Does anyone see a trend here?
Bush I > Bush II > Ghoulianni > Huckabee > Romney > Paul…..
From pardoning the traitors of IranGate to mass-murder to fucking your girlfriend while drooling over Ground Zero to pardoning a serial killer ’cause he’s related to Clinton to torturing your dog to SkinHeadLand!
If I didn’t know my Darwin I’d be down with Devo on this.
Resolved: The numbers one, two and three qualities you must have to be Republican candidate for President is that you be:
Bat-shit Insane or a sexual deviant. Bonus points if yer both.
Okay, I could not find just the right Devo vid…sue me!
thanks. safe now. :)
I have a Suspicious Mind when it comes to politicians.
Silly, Baptists don’t ex-communicate. Shun, perhaps, but not ex-communicate. besides, technically I’m not a member of this particular church so damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!
The other day I was astonished that my local Gooper paper (Vegas Review-Journal) — which normally blacklists me — published my letter-to-the-editor snark:
LOL!
I think Huck needs to hire KKKarl Rove. Karl can teach him to Lie Big! Say things like, “the Democrats started the war!”, do it with a completely straight face, say it over and over and if anyone says anything different, act like they are just idiotic…
Mike will NEVER be president if he just tries to sorta kinda lie… geesh!
/snark…
Huckabee got a little bit of static early on MTP or maybe Stephypopolis about letting some bad guy off the hook. IIRC, he gave the guy clemency and the guy committed another heinous act. This isn’t the same case is it?
Clinton did it.
Teddy, I don’t care for him either. Too much religiousity. But, he’s ok on non-violent drug offenders and on immigration. He’s a better nominee than Giuliani, who scares me no-end.
Sorry to hear you’re havin’ troubles. Saw I missed Cassie on last thread. I want to invite you both to stop by my new waystation…sit a spell and breathe deep. There’s a little surprise there for Cassie. Y’all take care!
Prairie Sunshine is dishin’ food for thought at Prairie Sun Rising….
If York is perpetuating an unflattering story of a Repube, we know there’s a hit out on Shucksabee. Byron got the orders. I still think the winning faction within the thieves and killers Party, the Republicants, is gonna be the Mittmo contingent. They can smooth over the Mormon thing just enough, since there’s at least some Bible-thumping goin on. Looks and charm make the lizard brains swoon…everytime!
Paging Howard Baker:
is back in fashion.
The Wayne Dumond story is just one very small aspect in the evolution and expression of the Clinton Derangement Syndome. Hillary was being attacked in the late 70’s and early 80′ for her looks, retaining her name and being a careerist bitch. The last estimate that I read was that $84 million were spent in the 80’s and 90’s by Mellon-Scaife and others to trash the Clintons..The interesting thing about CDS is that crosses political ideology.
Jeralyn, do you think the bruhaha will be the kiss of death to the huckster’s campaign or do you think he can cover up the coverup with some wordsmanship?
Hopefully this story has legs and takes down the fundie in the GOP race.
As for the spider, I’m no expert, but that looks like a banana spider. I had one hanging out in our outdoor shower on Molokai last time we were there.
It’s the same case but he didn’t grant the guy clemency. He said he would, then said he would rethink it, then the parole board granted him parole — making a clemency decision a non-issue.
There will be other questionable clemency decisions of his coming to light. He did grant it to a few murderers where even I would say, huh?
He looks like Nixon.
is back in fashion
just like the peace sign.
Yep. Raped and murdered 2 women after his release from prison. huck misjudged the guy…just a bit. But who could have known? /s
Maybe at the end of the day, they’re gonna return, holding their noses, to Benito The Bootie Bandit Ghouliani. “Best chance for beating Hillary” rationale. Y’know, there was all this breadth of dirt on Dubya publicly out there prior to 2001. Didn’t matter.
Huckabee on his website is trying to tie this to Clinton. But according to Waas Clinton recused himself in 1980 because of the personal relationship.
I’m seeing this everywhere, does anyone think this is going to hurt him?
Actually, I think he may recoup if the radical right backs him. It depends on what they want more, an anti-choice or an anti-crime candidate.
Thanks Prairie. Looks good.
Yes, but I do not want the GOP to have a “better nominee” this time.
I want them to pick the worst possible nominee. Which appears to be, for them, a tough task, with so many “worsts” to choose from.
you know, at this point… i’d prefer someone who lets one person go free that they shouldn’t have to what we have now – with hundreds of people (actually tens of thousands) locked up in this “war on terra”.
Thanks, Jeralyn.
My ex used to say, “He’d rather climb a tree to tell a lie than stand on the ground and tell the truth.”
there’s always the chance the gop candidate will be come the next president. i’m going with the “better nominee” for the sake of our country.
agreed. but i would not want that one person to have been released as political payback instead of a honest mistake in judgment.
I sent this to the Las Vegas Sun today. The editor called me back within 5 minutes to say the were gonna run it, probably Friday. LOL!
Lynch, tho…! ;-)
Why did Pat Robertson prematurely ejaculate his support for the creepy little bald kinda pro-choice ghoul? I can’t figger ol’ Pat’s reasoning on that one. Meebe pat knows something we don’t.
yes.
This Dumond case will be used against him by the GOP when their candidates talk about Gitmo: the next Preznit needs to decide what to do about the 300 “terrorists” imprisoned there.
Hucklebee isn’t the man to make that decision, apparently.
Maybe they both have wide stances.
Except with Wayne Dumond, his parole and Huckabee’s role in it was not based on the case but on the political agenda against Clinton.
Romney would *love* to nab the evangelical vote, and I’m guessing that his speech tomorrow is designed to at least neutralize Huckabee in that regard — and if this makes Huckabee vulnerable, Mitt will follow tomorrow’s speech with mourning over a few well-placed knives that suddenly appeared in Huckabee’s back. Mitt’s fondest dream is that this IS fatal to Huckabee, and that someone else will stick him with the knife so that Mitt can accept Huckabee’s endorsement.
I read somewhere recently that Pat is handing the reins of his money-gathering operations to his son. Perhaps Pat will fade into oblivion (one fervently hopes!)
Hey, awesome letter, dude. I hope they don’t edit the damn thing. That’s some biting commentary. Bravo.
I must respectfully disagree. Rape and kidnapping conviction, life + 20 seems just about right. This case has been public for years. It is not necessary to use the National Review as a source since they are never truthful. This is also about getting revenge on Bill Clinton. Innocent women were murdered because Huckleberry is a Christian fascist.
Priceless.
*clapping wildly*
*cheering wildly*
Nice letter — brief, to the point, and memorable as all get out.
Howard Baker would be proud.
Suzanne, I agree:
“but i would not want that one person to have been released as political payback instead of a honest mistake in judgment.”
The thing is, there was no payback. Huckabee really thought the guy deserved a break. His sentence was enormous comparatively speaking to others in Arkansas, he had suffered castration, and the courts refused to examine the new scientific evidence which his lawyer said probably would have excluded him. There was also a questionable identification.
Huckabee’s problem is that he can’t own up to recommending parole for the guy. He’s insisting he didn’t tell them what he wanted them to do. And the parole board members are saying he’s lying…he told them what he wanted.
Bobby, that IS a great letter. Can I cadge it and send it to my local paper?
Mebbe the endorsement’s what prompted the precipitous announcement that Junior Robertson was taking over the empire?
Where have we heard, err… seen that before…? 8-(
The 90’s?
Have been pleasantly surprised the amount of coverage MSM has been giving the huck story; ain’t holdin’ my breath tho’ that it will continue for the desired amount of time. ;-(

Having been reared in that particular religion for 18 years, you [expletives deleted] *g* right it wouldn’t go down well….but you were just having a bit of snark on that last part, weren’t you? Cured me of any desire to be around the hypocritical variety of Christianity forever!
BobbyG @ 64 -
Perfect! Short and sweet, making it harder to edit…
They love me at the Sun. Not so the wingnut Review-Journal (our main paper).
Got to the Sun website, search on “Gladd”, LOL. Multiple pages of my stuff.
Maybe that explains why I can’t seem to find a job.
;)
Sort of a “Who will rid me of this
meddlesome priesttroublesome prison case?” situation, perhaps.“No,” says Huckabee, “I never TOLD them what to do . . . I just asked a question.”
I didn’t use the National Review as a source on his sentence being light. I used his lawyer who writes at TalkLeft, is the author of the premier legal text books on search and seizure and lawyer ethics, and is President Elect of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. I corroborated it through news articles at the time on Lexis.
Arkansas has jury sentencing but the judge is free to disregard it. That makes for very disparate sentences and makes clemency an all the more important tool.
jeralyn, do ya think that huckster thought it was a two-fer, able to free an lynched guy and slam clinton at the same time?
dood needs to head to confession and then tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. that’s the only way he has out and i don’t see him doing it. he’s too much used car salesman/tv preacher in his slickness and i think he thinks he can still weasel outta it.
‘92 onwards… ;-)
HuffPo says that was self inflicted to get sympathy.
Absolutely.
Hey TexB! I hope you’re feeling better!
{{{{TexBetsy}}}}
Jeralyn!
Good to see you in this space again!
When do we get to see a button for your blog up top besides FDL and emptywheel?
Bob in HI
May be the Huckabee situation will interest people in the VRWC and read Gene Lyons book:
The Hunting of the President: The Ten-Year Campaign to Destroy Bill and Hillary Clinton
Huckabee’s problem is that he can’t own up to recommending parole for the guy. He’s insisting he didn’t tell them what he wanted them to do. And the parole board members are saying he’s lying…he told them what he wanted.
This is what I remember from a few months ago on MTP or Stephanopolis. Hucklebee just can’t manage to eke out a believable position on it. He just sounds like a big ol liar.
Great post Jeralyn. As Max Brantley of the AR Times blog said this evening:
And NYT Caucus blog is covering this as well.
thanks RonD
Quite the Blow today, eh? *g*
Huffpo said some people say that. It’s ridiculous. Dumond was castrated and then hog-tied. How do you hog-tie yourself after that?
Dumond sued the sheriff for keeping his balls in formaldyhde on his desk. The suit was settled for $110k. The Sheriff later died in prison serving a 20 year sentence for his own crimes.
Dumond was out on bail awaiting trial in the rape case when he was castrated. Shortly thereafter, someone burned his house down.
Eureka, i don’t think huckster is gonna be able to put that cat back into the bag. now the MSM is smelling blood in the water dood is toast.
rom TPM Josh Marshall by Josh Marshall
TPM Reader CR on Huckabee and Dumond …
I’ve seen the Wayne Dumond affair referred to as Huckabee’s “Willie Horton” problem a number of times, including on this blog this afternoon in a post by David Kurtz linking to Murry Waas’ excellent piece. But this case is only superficially like Willie Horton. As I recall, Michael Dukakis did not advocate the release of Willie Horton specifically, whereas Mike Huckabee *did* advocate specifically for the release of Wayne Dumond. Of course, Dukakis as governor *did* move to continue the program of furloughs for prisoners serving life without parole as a measure he believed would effectively rehabilitate prisoners, and in my opinion that was both dangerous as a matter of public policy and stupid at a purely political level. But the equivalency developing between the Willie Horton story and the Wayne Dumond story is ridiculous.
The bottom line is simple. Mike Huckabee championed the release of a specific convicted rapist who, once release, raped and killed a woman in Missouri. The furlough policy advocated by Mike Dukakis led to the furlough of Willie Horton, who raped a woman in Maryland and stabbed her fiancee. But Mike Dukakis had never heard of Willie Horton, whereas Mike Huckabee was well aware of the crimes and dangers posed by Wayne Dumond. Anyone who doesn’t see the substantive difference between the two cases just isn’t looking.
Cool, Suz.
Well, if the shoe fits…
True frontier justice…
madmommy — a bit of advice, unsolicited though it may be . . .
Garrison Keillor recounts one of Lake Wobegon’s old farts telling his buddies an old fishing joke: “When you go fishing with a Baptist, make sure you go with two of them. If you go with just one, he’ll drink all your beer.”
The same might hold true of political conversations at work for you. If there are two Baptists around, each might feel more pressure to toe the party line in the presence of the other. If you’re just talking with one of them, however, watch for signs that they would be open to some . . . ahem . . . political enlightenment. You’re someone safe to talk to, after all, since your not part of the system.
*g*
Hey, pups, gotta scramble, but I leave you with a new trick Mr. Sunshine taught me this evening:
When you want to shortcut to a dot com site that you haven’t bookmarked yet, type the site name in the window, i.e. firedoglake and then type Control-Enter. All the rest of the addy fills in for you. Only works for dot coms, not orgs or nets that we know of. Happy limber fingertips–g’night.
Plus, GHWBush is leading Romney’s speech tomorrow on his religion.
Yeah, out here that’s a Mormon fishing joke.
…if the shoe fits! A pithy statement… *g*
He really does look like Huckleberry Hound.
The thing about Dumond is that the only reason he didn’t get executed is that he died before he could be tried and convicted of the murder of a second woman. This is in addition to the many women he’d raped over the years. Yet the Clinton-haters, Huckabee among them, didn’t care about anything other than pissing off Bill Clinton. Period.
Thanks, it is definitely an interesting dynamic for me. I have been pleasantly surprised, for the most part, at the willingness to hear another perspective. especially considering the number of “W” bumper stickers on the vehicles in the parking lot. I primarily work with a small group of women and all but one of them have listened to me with respect. The hold-out is a hard core believer, even as she complains about how much of her meager salary is eaten up in insurance premiums. For her democrats are the great Satan, end of story.
Yes. Early to bed for me as well.
Goodnight all. The best of all possible tomorrows to you all.
Especially you, TexBetsy.
Goodnight.
I don’t know how much to read into that. I recall seeing that GHW Bush has offered his library to all the candidates, kind of like Jane and Christy have offered space here to any of the Democratic candidates who would like to take a dip in the Lake and chat with the Pups.
Of course, we’ll see what George the Elder has to say tomorrow.
Via Treehugger.com
Yeah, but who could possibly harpoon a whale named Mr. Splashy Pants? They might try, but then they’d start laughing and lose their grip.
You can vote here, if you feel so inclined.
reminds me of the people who say our prisoners at gitmo are trying to commit suicide in order to make the usa look bad.
i don’t know the absolute truth in either matter. but i’m predisposed to disbelieve both explanations.
Isn’t that still the credo within the Beltway…?
I am not sure how many women came forward and said that they had been raped by Dumond: But the Wass story has the story of one of them:
HuffPo
Bootie Bandit Ghouliani sez: Time to make LOVE…
It will be interesting to see what happens with the career of the aide that spoke against Hucklebee today, and any parole board members who have spoken out in the past.
Renee @ 113
Just voted, looks like Mr. Splashy Pants in gonna win in a landslide!
The AR Governor is now a Dem so the wingnuts will have no say.
wangdangdoodle still awake?
Time for me to turn in, goodnight all!
OT..some happy news:
A federal appeals court on Wednesday blocked a Bush administration rule that allowed logging and burning projects in national forests without first analyzing their effects on the environment.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the U.S. Forest Service violated the National Environmental Policy Act when it issued the 2003 rule, which was billed as a way to reduce wildfires.
As part of the “Healthy Forests Initiative,” the “hazardous fuels reduction” rule exempted logging projects up to 1,000 acres and prescribed forest burns up to 4,500 acres from environmental review.
The court said the agency’s failure to properly analyze the rule caused “irreparable injury” by allowing more than 1.2 million acres of national forest land to be logged and burned each year without studying the ecological impacts.
The three-judge panel ruled that the Forest Service can no longer exempt such projects from environmental analysis until the rule itself can be properly analyzed.

What are the pro’s and con’s of having this take huckster down now?
GHW Bush’s 1988 campaign manager, Lee Atwater, said of Mike Dukakis, “We’re going to strip the bark off that little bastard and make Willie Horton his running mate”.
Cool. It’s a much more interesting name than the others, I think.
Good night, everybody. And Happy St. Nichaolas Day.
Nite, MM!
omg.. just listened to Frank Gaffney on Hardball savage the NIE.. ’cause da mullahs are evil and want to bring about the apocalypse and he knows it… so they MUST be seeking a bomb. What is the guy’s problem?????
Besides all of the Hillary bashing, misleading headlines, and junk info, Huffpo is coming up with a lot of just plain wrong/incomplete information.
Depends on how Mork Romney does tomorrow with his LDS speech. Rudy the Bootie Bandit may be the beneficiary in the end.
sleep well madmom.
The quicker, the better, Ma Cheri… ;-)
Steve-AR, I just fed the news ticker with that story and gave you the h/t for it.
Guess old tired Fred has faded completely and John McCain is not to be seen. Wouldn’t it be interesting if the Repugs had an open convention? What fun.
Bobby G,
We loved Flight of the Conchords. This special music hour on HBO (I think) made us fall down, about three times.
Guess old tired Fred has faded completely and John McCain is not to be seen. Wouldn’t it be interesting if the Repugs had an open convention? What fun.
we will have to really stock up on the popcorn then for sure (laughing)
To see those twerps grovel for delegates…
I like it.
OTOH, ours will be a coronation, and I’m no fan of those, either, given the odds.
Fred speculated today the the Iranians perhaps “leaked” the NIE as part of their disinformation campaign. As I recall, it was released by U.S. intel, not “leaked” by anyone.
Jeeez…
OTOH, ours will be a coronation, and I’m no fan of those, either, given the odds.
no shit, newton. i would rather have an open convention than a coronation.
HW warming up for Mittmo?!? Well, that’s all the proof needed. Mittmo is the Chosen One.

Nahnoo, nahnoo.

Taking the point to its extreme, 2 open conventions – the Dems will make it work, and the Goopers will be a bloodbath…
Shaazbutt
Blub,
I’d really like to find a link for that. If you find one (I googled, but had no luck) please put it in a thread. That is something to show the so-called “pro-life” crowd.
I wonder if we will see them again. My son saw them perform in Sydney.
Prolly more than 50 million Americans will believe Fredrik of Hollywood’s assertion that the NIE was leaked by Iran. That’s how many believed Dubya when he leaked on their shoes and told them it was raining.
Taking the point to its extreme, 2 open conventions – the Dems will make it work, and the Goopers will be a bloodbath…
yeap, newton. judy will be wearing her tiara and stomping her faragamo’s screaming at rudy rudy rudy with frustration at her not being given the crown.

You had a link the other day to the story/journal of your daughter’s illness and death. I went over and read it all. What a beautiful father you are with so much love for your daughter. By the time I came back from reading you didn’t seem to be around anymore so I didn’t say anything then, but want to let you know now how moved I am.
“…PART.TIME.MODEL…“
It’s pretty simple. You’re thinking in terms of logically deciding actions based on the evidence. He’s a neocon, so he has a predetermined outcome that he wants, and is only interested in evidence to try to justify that outcome.
It’s rather reminiscent of a description I once read of a creationist fossil dig for kids — when they found a fossil, they were asked “Okay, how do you think this fits into the Creation story?”
Is it just me, or do the GOP presidential candidates remind you of the worst of the “American Idol” hopefuls? Christ on a pogo-stick, what a woeful bunch!!!
Thanks very much for the kind words. Still seems like last week. Goin’ on ten years.
These days I spend much time taking care of my parents.
I stay tired a lot.
yeap, the GOP candidates are the reason to have ‘none of the above’ on the ballot.
I couldn’t have punctuated that better… *g*
oh never mind.
Best performance yet!
I spotted it because last May I was driving around out West and near the north rim of the Grand Canyon they were essentially clear cutting the national forest. The fire control rational is pure bullshit because the larger trees that the loggers want are the ones that are most resistant to fire.
*sigh* I’m losing my touch…
Pretty sorry lot.
And BTW, I love the photograph of the spider — it looks Tiffany inspired, and the colors are great. Thanks, Jeralyn.
Steve-AR, I saw wide swatches that had been cut when I was driving down 101 along the Oregon coast 3 years ago. Beatiful forest along side then these ugly destruction zones where there was nothing but churned up dirt and stumps. a blight to behold.
‘night, ‘pups.
Fixin’ to crash.
Thanks, Christine, I went through 7 pages of spider pix before choosing it.
Night all and thanks for the warm welcome. It’s always fun to come and visit here.

so, anyone start a pool yet as to when huckster withdraws? keep in mind, its only tuesday.
You are an inspiration, BobbyG.
Can’t find the ABC one (I watchd it on tv)… but here’s the same story on NBC… unlike the ABC one this links the life expectancy decline to bad diet. Whatever the cause, it’s just sad. It’s a sad sad state of affairs in America.

Lost one Suzanne. It’s Wednesday. Nearly Thursday.
double crap, thanks, tex. duh.. see what night shift does (laughing)
Ghouliani is no longer heading up his Fear Consultancy, but he ain’t giving up his share of the $$$.
Hey, Suz, congrats on your latelate night posts, girl!
C’mon, Suz! If Ghouliani hasn’t been crucified, then Huck is only being poked… Remember, IOKIYAR! Live It, Breathe It… :P
frankly I don’t know why he’d withdraw. Ghouliani’s campaign might self-destruct in any of about 2000 ways… heck, he might even get indicted. Freddy’s unelectable. Willard is… Willard. And McCain’s McCain. If I were Huckabee, I wouldn’t withdraw.
Thanks, LooHoo. Eureka Springs and I are having fun alternating doing them.
Blub,
Thank you!
Hi to all.
hi margot.
1. You’ve got a bad PDF link in your post. The PDF file of the
detailed chronology (pdf) needs to be fixed. My PC says that doc is unreadable.
2. I would like to see the Byron York National Review article and
the Waas article at huffingtonpost.com compared side-by-side. There
are some differences that seem to me to be less than trivial.
3. If the allegation that then-Gov. Huckabee improperly influenced
the parole board is true then he needs to be held accountable for
that.
budly, checkin on the pdf link now. jeralyn has left already.
budly, the pdf link works for me. it takes one over to the talkleft site where jeralyn has stored all the documents – her site has a built in pdf reader.
I am fairly certain he appointed at least two members of the parole board.. and later offered one of those members another (better) job.
budly, this link is to the chronology.
nyc firepups send best wishes to texbetsy!

Senate Panel Passes Bill to Limit Greenhouse Gases
New York Times – 1 hour ago
By JOHN M. BRODER WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 – A Senate committee approved a broad bill on Wednesday night to address climate change, a major step toward passage of a measure that would for the first time slow and then reverse emissions of the gases that …
your welcome!
where’s upstairs? how do you get there?

Two things:
1) They were against parole before they were for it!
2) This is not a WIllie Horton situation. Dukakis supported a policy, quite arguably flawed, that allowed Willie Horton out on furlough where he committed heinous crimes. Dukakis had no personal connection with Horton. Moreover, parole or furlough are not in themselves bad ideas although they can only be executed with wisdom; Charles Manson comes up for parole every few years in CA and he is routinely denied-that is wise.
In this case, Huckabee personally intervened for purely political reasons, ignoring the pleas of Dumond’s victims. This is not a Willie Horton situation of arguably flawed but well intentioned policy with no specific intervention; this is deeply flawed and craven politicking on Huckabee’s part, and he deserves whatever firestorm he gets for not protecting those women in Missouri from this man who would not likely have been paroled without Huckabee’s interventions.
Budley, the link works on a PC in Firefox and Internet Explorer. It may only work on a Mac if you open it with Adobe pdf.
Is this really TRUE? In a ten year span there were no murders or rapists sentenced to more than ten years? That’s pretty incredible.
What about this case in 1986.
http://florida-issues.blogspot…..e-for.html
Or the Billy Gale Williams murder of a sheriff in 1981. Or Anthony Ford convicted in 1981 of killing a highway patrolman. All received the death penalty.
Here’s another http://www.clarkprosecutor.org…..ton887.htm
And that was only looking at a couple of pages of Google searches.
Something is utterly wrong with that statement.
I think that this case is gonna be only the tip of the iceberg…Huckabee handed out clemencies like these folks were possibly the next Jesus, wrongly convicted by a jury of Sadducees.
http://www.arkansasleader.com/…..abee8.html
I suspect that Huckabee is about as analytical of the stories he’s told by the families and froend of the criminals as he is of weighing Scientific Evidence. After all, here’s a guy that ignores almost two centuries of cumulative Scientific evidence from fields like genetics, paleontology, molecular biology, comparative anatomy, embryology, geology, biogeography, cytology, comparative physiology, and individual fields studying the taxonomic groups in Biology (entomology, ichthyology, mammology, biological anthropology, botany, etc.).
He responds, “I’ll believe what my Bible seems to say…’cause I wasn’t there”…and ignore all the Scientific evidence. Kind of like how he will free criminals…”I wasn’t there…sure the evidence might indicate they were guilty…but I got this ‘feelin’”
The numbers are for St. Francis County, the county where Dumond was charged. From the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (Little Rock, AR) January 24, 1990, “Defense: Dumond sentence unfair.”
