Years ago, I imagine there were many directions the Washington Post may have wanted to go with their editorial page. But it’s still hard to believe they decided — "You know, I sure wish we could out do James Taranto". Well, congratulations WaPo, some newspapers would be satisfied with just having a Sousa-march named after them; some would say let’s keep the public goodwill of the Watergate Cover-up investigation years going. But not you, you decided, let’s enable the oppressed Republican Party and its glorious wars as much as possible.
There’s no editor more capable of finding a way to shake off the errors of the past and concentrate on ramping up the errors of the future than Fred Hiatt.
Why just look at him go:
Even if Tehran provides satisfactory answers, its uranium enrichment — and thus its progress toward a bomb — will continue. That doesn’t trouble Mr. ElBaradei, who hasn’t hidden his view that the world should stop trying to prevent Iran from enriching uranium and should concentrate instead on blocking U.S. military action. Do Russia and China share this judgment? If so, they are more likely to precipitate a U.S. or Israeli military strike than to prevent one.
One can literally see Hiatt salivate at writing the editorial stating Dick Cheney had no choice but to bomb those Iranians so hard that that even Kathryn Lopez bounced. "See what you made him do?"
One may think that the latest NIE stating Iran stopped working on a nuclear bomb in 2003 would temper Fred from enriching his own codpiece, but why would logic and rationality take hold now?
Iran’s "decisions are guided by a cost-benefit approach rather than a rush to a weapon irrespective of the political, economic and military costs," says the public summary released Monday. That sounds like an endorsement of the diplomatic strategy pursued by the Bush administration since 2005, which has been aimed at forcing Iran to choose between the nuclear program and normal economic and security relations with the outside world. It strengthens the view, which we have previously endorsed, that this administration should not have to resort to military action to destroy Iranian nuclear facilities.
Passive-Aggressive much Fred?

Hi Attaturk.
It seems that they’re all asleep Attaturk, and I think I may try that again myself. Thanks for exposing the wingnuttery.
This may seem a bit optimistic, but I regularly converse with average (and yes, fairly ignorant) people in a somewhat conservative area, and I must relate that this NIE story has them really shaken. People that thought we were likely going to war with Iran and that it would be necessary and painful and now this story comes out. They are hearing and comprehending it and no amount of Faux News or any newspaper bullshit is going to make a dent in their bewilderment in finally and undeniably feeling that this government, elected by they themselves, has failed even them so completely that not only can it no longer be trusted, it can no longer be taken seriously. For them it is definitely a seminal moment. Just thought I might translate that for my more fortunate compadres. The upcoming spin should be dizzying, but I’m betting that it has no effect. I also have noticed that Giuliani is being dragged down by this same right-wing malaise. And quite a malaise it is. BTW, I’m a kick them when they’re down kinda guy, so I think our response should be to trample them with our cavalry and take no prisoners.
Lest we forget…
The cessation of Iran’s efforts to acquire nuclear weapons occurred during the period when reformist Mohammed Khatami was President (2003). That means that throughout the COMPLETE TERM of the so-called genocidal, terrorist President Ahmadjinedad that there has not been ANY EVIDENCE that he has authorized ANY work on building or obtaining plans for a nuclear weapon.
NONE, NADA, ZILCH, ZERO.
So much for the Bush administrations claims that Ahmadjinedad is a liar, an out-of-control madman who is dead set to send the Middle East up in mushroom clouds!
Carlo,
I am waiting for a “Remember the Maine” “Gulf of Tonkin” event that obviates the need for any military intelligence report. The ensuing uproar will mask any smarty pants intelligence reports. Kristol and Cheney and Bolton will beat the drums of war like drunken college freshmen smacking their favorite Ayn Rand novel against the bed frame as they masturbate.
Apparently Condi is offering to give our Top Secret documents to Foreign Leaders, while denying them to members of Congress.
“
“People need the opportunity to absorb what they’ve heard,” she said. “We have been completely transparent about what the intelligence assessment says. And people need a chance to read it. When they do that and when they read it in its detail and nuance, they will be able to see the points that I have made.”
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…..I9ir.s0NUE
Hey CONDI! Why not make the COMPLETE NIE available to Congress and the public, if you think that it’s alright to pass about to Russian, French, German, British and other officials?
Why don’t you show why this document that shows that the Iranians haven’t been involved in seeking a nuclear weapon THROUGHOUT the Ahmadjinedad-era somehow means that the War-Mongering policies the Bush Administration has been using actually have succeeded in doing anything other than get the reformists in Iran pushed out of power.
That is a legitimate worry, but I think that less than half of the 33%ers will buy it. Many are unfamiliar with Rand, too, luckily.
Carlo: One would hope conservative &/or uninformed people would finally start to comprehend the big con. I don’t expect any “good” news coming out to bolster the administration, just the opposite is much more likely. More & more stories with evidence too clear to refute are going to surface to confuse them. I hope it’s not very long before more of the bewildered lose their faith in the naked emperors & become really angry. Even the most loyal & trusting react furiously when they figure out they have been scammed.
The Bush regime has actually brought the United States to the brink of World War III with his insane policies. Our relations have gone utterly downhill since he took over as President. Look at the case of how his Administration handled the overture by the Iranians in 2003 to negotiate not only the issue of nuclear technology, but also their support for Hamas and Hezbollah…under a two-state solution. Yet Cheney and his cronies rebuffed them.
Instead they hardened sanctions, resulting in the economy of Iran taking a nose-dive, allowing the populist Ahmadjinedad to take over from reformist Khatami. Instead of strengthening Khatami’s hand over the Conservative and Islamist opposition, the Bush Administration did everything they could to undermine him.
Khatami unilaterally terminated the weapons program in 2003. At the very same time that he was willing to negotiate on these issues. I wonder if he even made the cessation as a “good faith” gesture and told Condi, Bush or others. In any case, a golden opportunity was missed.

Exactly, because bush-cheney are not in the governing business, they r in the war business.
[hello, is anybody else awake?]
Good Morning, Firepups!
It’s cold, with light snow in the forecast today. So there’s a pot of coffee, and plenty of hot water for tea. I made another batch of herb biscuits, and they’re ready to come out of the oven now.
Work for peace, every day!
What do you really expect from a stupid little weasel ‘elected’ by his dad’s cronies on SCOTUS for the sole reason to pump up MIC sales.
Well, he did that real good.
The real failure here is with the ‘Democrat’ Party. Miss Nancy has a shot at going down as the worst Speaker in quite a while. ‘Cause ya know what?
$120/bl oil and a stagnating economy ain’t goin’ away just ’cause you wish it would MIss Nancy.
And come 2008 the ‘Demcocrat’ Party owns, absolutely owns….
The MeatGrinder.
Good morning everyone.
So many opportunities for effective and fruitful diplomacy have been squandered by this horrible administration. Not the least of which was the failure to openly and productively accept the world’s cooperation after 9/11. This could have been used as a powerful unifying force benefiting all. What a criminal shame.
Our forecast is calling for 1-2 inches of snow and a high of 32 degrees today. This is pretty early in the year for snow in Washington D.C. and suburbs.
I can only hope that a good number of Progressives get elected into Congress. More and more opportunities seem to be emerging what with Republicans dropping like flies in Winter. I think that this is actually more critical than which Democrat gets elected, because all of the front-runners appear to be quite comfortable with the A*P*C talking-points. They will have to be pulled kicking and screaming to the progressive position, at least in terms of foreign policy.
Also critical is getting them to commit to things like full disclosure of Bush/Cheney crimes and prosection (or impeachment) with permanent removal from any future political office or contracting role. Once they get in office and start looking at what skeletons are buried they’ll likely waver with fear.
That is, unless they are like the Hillary Nutcracker
http://www.hillarynutcracker.c…..r.com4.jpg
Thanks for the coffee, njprogressive! Sometimes I think Bush should be portrayed running blindly forward waving a banner emblazoned “Squander!”
After 9/11, the possibilities for patching up old frayed spots in our diplomacy were suddenly present. The Bushies preferred the Iraq War to the future of our America. They have blown it, big time, diplomatically, financially, and militarily. I’m more than ready for a new administration.
I had a neighbor who every day sprinkled a bit of sugar on his lawn.
I asked, “Why do you sprinkle a bit of sugar on your lawn each day?”
“To keep away the elephants,” he replied.
So, I note that “There aren’t any elephants at large within a thousand miles of here.”
And he replied, “See how well it works.”
morning!
Good morning pups!
eg, what up!
In the Meantime Huckabee ASKS at a News Conference he held with a bunch of Right-Wing Evangelical “Rapturistas”
“What does my religion have to do with being President?” after being asked by media if he believes in Creationism.
“Amen” the Fundy zealots shouted…”leave our Huckster with his 8th century Dark Ages views of Science ALONE!”
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…..4lzBhB5494
Does Huckabee not see that the reason these folks support him BECAUSE they expect him to impose his religion on others when he enters the White House?
And if Hucklebee really believes his religion is of no interest to his job as President why is his religious views of abortion? Of marriage? Why does he constantly prate on his religious beliefs and background as if it’s his BIGGEST QUALIFICATION?
His views on Science ARE RELEVANT simply because a President has to be able to distinguish between facts and fantasy. Science increasingly relate to federal policymaking…in funding research (stem cell, evolutionary biology, genetics), supporting academic programs, and in avoiding poor policies that allow actions that risk Americans health.
A President that believes that mental illness is “possession” may have a whole different attitude to proper treatment. He may encourage exorcisms as expressions of religious freedom.
If one believes in “prophesy” then one may take a very different approach to political diplomacy and war-making than if one simply looks at the best evidence and well tested hypotheses. If one believes in “curses” then one may be averse to assisting those in suffering simply because it would act against God’s Will (e.g. HIV).
A President that disbelieves in the relationship of humans and other Primates might shut down the several Primate Research labs run by the NIH…simply because he can’t understand why non-human Primates would be better disease models than bacteria.
Why worry about Agricultural Policy when famines are the result of sin. Less sin, fewer famines!
And we all saw how quickly the drought in Georgia ended when Governor Perdue stood and prayed for rain.So much for all that evidence about Global Warming. The weather is the domain of the LORD…how dare we think that humans can influence it, any more than we can reduce the spread of disease!
So, of course a President’s religion is important to the office of President. He’s not gonna take advice from atheists or those of other faiths. How can an atheist have a moral compass? And he’ll think those in other religions have a compass, but it points toward Rome, Jerusalem…or Mecca.
The fear of religious zealots taking political office was so strong that De Toqueville noticed many states in the 17th century United States refused to allow ordained ministers or priests to run for office. Candidates were expected to represent ALL their constituents, not just one sect.
raven! How’s the bride and the puppy?
The King of England and his corporate cohorts in colonial crime mercantiled the American colonies. This gave rise to America, foundered on principles and laws protecting the rights of men from the abuse of government and de facto tyranny of a King and his corporate cohorts.
Fastforward 200 plus years……….
Predicated on issues of America’s national security a rouse, Iraq feels the heat of The Bush/Cheney moniacal monarchy and his attached corporate cohhorts in colonial crime, shoving Oil laws down the throats of the Iraqi Parliment, raping the people of Iraq just as the King of England raped the colonies, and telling Iraq what to do, just like the King of England told the colonist in America.
The facsist neocons have orchastarated upon the people of Iraq the identical colonial injustices suffered by our forefathers at the hands of a corrupt King. In their lust to maintain and consolidate power they have taken everything we stand for and turned it upside down, lied to the governed, killed our own citizens and thousands of Iraqi’s, in their quest for black gold while maintaining their “cash cow.” Iran is thier next victim, predicated on again faslehoods, misrepresentations and servile predjudices. These neo facist neocons have no sense of decency. They know two thing, manipulation via lies and arrogance.
Our executive branch needs an “INTERVENTION” in the form of IMPEACHMENT NOW!!
raven! great to “see” you, been missing your morning comments…
Good Morning…more progressive on the site. I could not sign on last night and wanted to post. Then, this morning, I am in the group that gets remembered for sign in! More success; I am so grateful.
I was wanting to post in some thread just about how tired I am about reading the lies. In the press conference yesterday, we were round the bend. Someone used “delusional” earlier; we’re there. Are we going to get more pushback here in this last year or more dramatic, scarier damage? With the new Iran report and maybe some sense coming from Gates…maybe something sane will come from the inside. Truth is so powerful.
Here in Austin we have the UT vision: The Truth will Set You Free. That engraving on the campus was just about 12 blocks from the Bush governor’s house. O, I forgot he can’t read. Just the same site where Cheney et al came acourting to launch him for the puppet President. And here we are. I am so grateful to be getting on today. Keep warm out there.
Plus, big habeas case coming up at the Supremes. Maybe more truth & pushback? We can hope.
Making up excuses to protect the Fuhrer and his men is what all good fascist newspapers do! See? *checking watch* We’re right on schedule in our descent into the abyss…
!0! Is there really a such place as Trump University? The locations listed on the page below (eliminate the spaces after the dot and slash) are real, I think …

Good morning, pups. It’s MoDo and Friedman in the Times. MoDo says if W. can shape intelligence to match his faith-based beliefs, as with Iraq, then he will believe the intelligence — no matter how incredible it is. Mr. Friedman gives us his guess on what ihe Iranian National Intelligence Estimate of America would look like.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. Have a grand day.
habeas case being argued by ccr before the supremes today will be carried live on c-span radio (starting at 11:15am)
Carlo December 5th, 2007 at 1:48 am
The first note is a small ray of sunshine, for which I thank you. As to the second… that’s a starting point. *g*
More from Modo.
That’s beautifully laid out…as are all your comments. Thank you!
What lies, deceits, manipulations, and propaganda will be spewed by the Bush Regime today? I don’t want to know! *bashing the RNC symbol*
Good morning. A R on Washington Journal just said that W should be impeached & that voting for him was the worst mistake he ever made in his life.
Based upon callers thus, “hang ‘em high”, seems to be the mood of the morning. *g*
While a hopeful sign, it’s kinda scary too. One wonders what W will do if he sees his 25% base slipping away from him…
Yeah, impeachment too good. War crimes. War crimes.
Interesting how much callers have changed in the last year.
Good Morning everybody!
here’s what’s up on Washington Journal this morning:
WASHINGTON JOURNAL
Wednesday, Dec. 12
7:30am – Richard Samp, Washington Legal Found., Chief Counsel & Stephen Vladeck, Amer. Univ., Associate Int’l Law Prof.
8:30am – Rep. Jan Inslee (D-WA), Energy & Commerce Cmte., Member
9am – Rep. Lee Terry (R-NE) , Energy & Commerce Cmte., Member
9:30am – John Kennedy, Orlando Sentinel Tallahassee, Bureau Chief
just woke up…man it’s good to wake up to posts, thanx for this attiurk
anyway, since watergate, hasn’t murdock bought the post?
cuz obviously that explains it
George Bush will continue to be the Regime’s Monkey Charlatan today no matter what his sheep say about the latest revelation that Georgie and his men are nothing but a bunch of warmongering liars hell bent on killing people for their own NWO!
Instead of impeachment, let’s head straight to indictments & imprisonment! Works for me. ;-)
WJ host continuing wingnut meme. “Israel disputes CIA claims” etc etc. Caller says it’s all up to Israel now.
I agree, it’s harder and harder to find a BushCo supporter.
Juan Cole speculates this morning that Admiral William J. Fallon, CENTCOM commander, may have been instrumental in pushing through the NIE. He mentions
but a president can’t be indicted, only impeached
and after he leaves office I believe he is immune from criminal prosecution in the states unless he’s impeached
some kind of law that the president can’t be prosecuted for executing his office as he thinks is fit for the country, I don’t know the exact text of that law but someone can help me out I’m sure
me likey…there are real patriots and real heros left in this country
Yeah, the active military muckity mucks were among those who finally stood up to W. Good on them.
that’s what ray mcgovern wrote yesterday:
in addition I am pretty certain a president can be impeached afther they leave office
though that is not likely to happen becuase it would create the presidence and the very first chance they got they would impeach a democrat
possibly clinton again
Yup, it’s way past time for Carlo’s Cavalry to ride.
I was just hoping-out-loud! If I’m not mistaken, Dick Cheney can be prosecuted for crimes committed while in office and Bush cannot.
off to coffee shop, c all L8tr
Sorry, I missed that, Selise. I’m having trouble keeping up with everything that happens here at the lake these days. Prolly bears repeating anyway, I guess.
Just sat back down after doing a little Snoopy dance. May also be time to start weaning off the anti-depressants. *g*
i’m not keeping up either… but we are all smarter when we work together!
Another angle: The outting of Valerie Plame Wilson may be linked to this story. She worked in the CIA’s nonproliferation group, and the loss of her sources may have delayed the CIA’s recognition that Iran had stopped its program.
WJ continuing to continue to neocon meme by reading only articles in that vein. Just read WaTimes editorial about Ds waving white flag. Callers aren’t buying it.
Someone inexplicably filched my user name. It’s nice to be back, although I was sad at not being able to share in the collective sigh of relief at the Iran news Monday.
That said, after the original exultation two things occurred to me:
1. We had a palace coup that came to fruition only after a year. If Cheney has been dethroned, doesn’t the logic of the situation demand that he be removed from power officially?
2. Congress will not impeach, despite catching Cheney and Bush in flagrante delicto lying to get us into war, which only further erodes what’s left of our democracy.
Another possible link, that I mentioned last night, is that this CIA report may be rataliation (or blowback as the experts term it) for outing Valery. That would be SO sweet.
Are you channeling my brain? *g*
Great minds & all that.
Yep. Brewster Jennings was in Iran when Plame was outed.
I did a post awhile back on how the CIA Memorial has a star in place of a name in 2003 which has led me to believe that one CIA agent/operative lost his or her life when Bush & Cheney decided to out Brewster Jennings during a time of war. Valerie Plame seems to know that lives were lost, but because of their classified positions, she cannot say a word. (that’s the impression I get from her when she’s asked about this)
Traitors and acts of treason by warmongering, lying, stinking, fascist Pigs!
Remember when Donny Rumsfeld held a yard sale and Iran was gobbling up our stuff? Oops! Not a peep from Bush & Cheney about that.
And what about Halliburton? Why did Halliburton suddenly pull out of Iran a few years ago? Hmmmmmmm…..
The last seven years has been a farce. Disturbing.
Going off topic for a sec. When is the FISA vote?
i’m not sure i have this right…. but if today is, as i think, the first day of Chanukah… then blessing to all who celebrate and remember the day.
Test for linking skills:
There are three severe impediments to bringing these people to justice:
– presidential pardons
– The American Service-members Protection Act (aka The Hague Invasion Act)
– The American tradition of bygones (”Let put the past behind us …”)
re: fisa – not yet on the schedule (to my knowledge). yesterday senator specter introduced another fisa bill, which will be considered by the senate judiciary committee tomorrow.
You meant Iran
My my my. WJ jas another neocon on, defending W position on Guantanamo. Started thinking WJ was part of the cabal awhile ago, but hasn’t been quite so apparent as this morning.
Yes, yes I did. Thanks.
Can someone please tell me what I’m doing wrong? I copy the URL, come back here and click the link icon, paste what I copied into that blank and click the button. Then….nothing shows up in the comment. With preview not working, this is getting *real* fustrating. [note: an http:// already shows up in the link blank and when I copy the URL, that puts multiple http’s in that slot.]
good, just back from our am trek!
emptywheel:
It appears that the President of the United States has been summoned to Israel to do some explaining.
what computer, operating system and browser are you using?
you are missing a step, you then have to write your hyper description betwean the last two taggy things
Yup. I just overwrite the automatically supplied http:// with the full URL that I copy from the browser address window. When giving URLs, some people omit the http:// and if one were to copy one of those, the auto provided http:// would be needed. Bottom line, NBD, just overwrite it.
I don’t know. I’m seeing one representing each side.
[a href=”place entire url here”]write your text here[/a]
[mod note; HTML formatting lesson fixed by mod.]
Highlight the text you want for the title of your link first, and then click the link button and paste your link. and voila! the link will appear so named.
Righto. I missed the other side at the start. (Getting coffee?)
I have exactly the same problem: when I click OK the html gets inserted with no text. So, I simply insert the text by hand just ahead of the tag. I’m using Firefox 2.0.0.11 under a version of Linux.
I posted what you are doing wrong in number 77
if you want you can use firefox to see how my link that follows is written
launch firefox, highlight the link, right click, hit “view source code”
link to this post
Let’s just skip them. LOL Personally, I think impeaching at this point is a lost cause, but it wouldn’t hurt my feelings if Dennis Kucinich brought his Dick Cheney impeachment resolution to the floor today to be voted on. In fact, I think he should do that every week and let the House members explain why they keep protecting the war criminal Cheney.
Thanks, Selise.
Scarecrow’s upstairscrow!
you launch the java applet, paste in your post, hit enter
in the htlm that goes to the reply box you type in your text’
my link above looks like this (substituting bragckets for tags)
[a href=”http://firedoglake.com/2007/12/05/an-enabler-for-our-times/#Respond”]link to this post[/a]
I don’t see much evidence of push back by the military. They are still plenty of them jonsin for some more fighting.
What strikes me as odd is that they go back to yr 03 and make the announcement in an 07 NIE. And so what about the assessments in 03, 04, 05 and 06.. weren’t they reporting no nukes under development? There is something weird about the 07 NIE suddenly appearing and proclaiming .. heck nothin doin since 03.
Is this weird or what?
Shorter Fred Hiatt: A thermo a day keeps the terrists away.
Good Morning!
A little OT, but did anyone else hear John Yoo (Mr. Torture) on NPR last night defending indefinite detention without habeas corpus? What was possible even more offensive was that the introduction made no mention of his incredibly controversial history, merely describing him as a law professor and former Bush official. And. And he had the temerity to use the terms “prisoners of war” and “POW” repeatedly to describe the detainees. This after BushCo went through tortuous legal contortions to avoid having these prisoners classed as such so that the Geneva Conventions would not apply.
Why is NPR giving this creature a soapbox? Of course it’s possible that he’s the only person they could find to give a pro-administration opinion?
