I think most people were pretty shocked when Time Magazine took the rather indefensible position that Joe Klein’s clearly erroneous, GOP propaganda-sourced article had nothing that couldn’t be explained away as "he said/she said." But the stonewalling they’ve done in the wake of the subsequent outcry is even worse.
Rush Holt, author of the FISA bill in question, asked to be given space on the Swampland blog to rebut Klein’s false assertions — and was refused. Russ Feingold had to go to the Chicago Tribune — a publication that had the decency to publish a true retraction about Klein’s false GOP spin — in order to get his letter on the subject published.
According to Zach Goldberg, Rep. Holt’s spokesman: "Rep. Holt had an email exchange with Mr. Klein about FISA and his column. During the exchange, Rep. Holt made a request to respond with a Swampland post to clarify what is really in the RESTORE Act. Mr. Klein noted he already issued a public apology and did not accept the request."
Let’s just ponder for a second how lowly Time’s behavior here is. It refused the requests of two sitting members of Congress, both of whom are members of the Intelligence Committees and have played a central role in drafting the pending FISA legislation, to correct Klein’s false statements in Time itself. What kind of magazine smears its targets with patently false statements and then blocks them from responding?
Glenn also reports that a letter waas written jointly to Time by House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Silvestre Reyes, which also never saw the light of day. And at least 100 people cc’d Glenn on letters they wrote to Time about Klein’s Hoekstra-spun fabrication. None of them were printed.
Time is trying to bury the whole issue and hoping it goes away. You can call it journalistic malpractice or malfeasance or just plain lying, whatever you want, but their commitment to protecting Joe Klein, his flighty editors and the GOP — rather than to their readers and the truth — is a disgrace.

And there is no indication, even at this late date, that Time will do what virtually everyone knows they should do.
Shameful.
Glenn hammers Time:

The ‘fourth estate’ has basically become a right wing enabler. I don’t read “Time”.
Minor Typos, Jane! Excellent post!
So sad. I truly used to love Time.
I bet you couldn’t have slammmed a toothpick in Kleins ass with a sledgehammer when Holt asked for rebuttal time.
The questions I need to come to grips with are two. What is Joe Klein’s agenda. And what is Time magazine’s political agenda?
It just boggles the mind that Time would go to such lenghths to prevent Senators and Congressmen who actually were involved in crafting the legislation from responding.
Likewise, when I read Holt and Feingolds respective pieces, neither man mentioned that Time refused to give them an opportunity to correct the errors.
Is Time trying to give Fox a run for their money or what?
So then. Are we ready to conclude that Time is fundamentally a political editorial publication?
Are you getting the picture now?
The corporatist media are our deadly, sworn enemies. Places such as FDL, dKos, OpenLeft, EmptyWheel are our ’shock troops’ in a heretofore undeclared war between the Fascist state which has sprung up in the nurturing slime and mud of the MIC, Xtian Cultists, and corporatist appeasement. We are now seeing the scope of the conflict. It’s vast and we face an enemy armed with the established tools of money and influence.
Our weapons are the truth and nothing but the truth.
Time is a dying business. Everyone knows this already.
What they don’t know is the shape of things to come….
We are lucky indeed for we, here in Free Left Blogistan, will play a large role in molding that shape.
The beat goes on, Jane! Thanks for this… Digg!
Speaking of Time. Does anyone recall Hugh Sidey? Now there was an objective journalist. Not hardly.
Why should it? Clearly, unlike Joe Lieberman, Conyers and Reyes represent
a small clique of Bush-hating extremists; namely, the American people.
As more and more of the responsible “journalism” is revealed, fewer and fewer will look to the MSM for accurate reporting. Most of know that they are mostly post stenographic school jobs… but the gen public is catching on and soon will no longer buy nor even read for free their rubbish.
Thank dog for the internets and our brilliant news hogs who can de spin the “news”. I’m saving tons of money and not consuming as many tress. Ya hear me Mr. Salzberger? Can you hear me now?

On a par with the KoolAid they wash’em down with… ;-)
Well there goes your shot at person of the year Jane!
There was a time when I paid hard earned money to read “Time”. Now when I’m at the doctor’s or dentist’s office I’d rather read “People” zine. More objectivity, I guess.
Yup, kiddo, I think those are the questions.
Is this an effort to protect the magazine from “losing face” by being seen as publishing misinformation through the poor work of one of it’s main writers, or
A knee-jerk protection of the writer without any thinking process, or
A command from management/BOD to express their agenda only and absolutely refuse to publish any counter argument no matter how correct?
Of course one could (and we have been for several years now) pitch the same questions to most of the media…
The only times I read news magazines or papers is when I’m in the doctor’s or dentist’s waiting rooms, or at my in-laws house. My in laws are in their sixties & seventies.
Snap!
I’m afraid that the put up or shut up time elapsed on Leahy some time ago.
Does anybody really believe that a contempt citation is enforceable on this crowd?
Time for the real story!
An Inherent Contempt one is… *sigh* We can always dream… *g*
And then what? I love Pat Leahy (and the fact that he is teaming with Patfitz on the Plame investigation? – TOO HOT) But really. I need results. Results that STICK.
KO is on, Hurrah for David Gregory finally jumping on the Shark… ;-)
My letter to Priscilla that I mailed to her home address today:
Priscilla Painton (Time Magazine Editor),
You have decided to lie to the American people without shame or regret and there is no longer any disputing that. The facts are not in dispute as you would claim and you have become an official propagandist for the Right Wing Noise machine. I expect nothing less from someone who put “Hatemongering Harpie” Ann Coulter in TIME’s Influential 100, when that pick shocked even right wing serial propagandist Bill O’Reilly. It shocked Bill Orally!!!!
We have also determined that you lie without shame because the people who uncover your lies are not people whose opinion you value. You are such a right wing propagandist we realized you would only be shamed if your lies were uncovered within the community whose opinion you do care about. You know, the people that actually physically live in your community and would be considered your neighbors. It would be a pity for them to realize they live with a neighbor who was willing to lie to 20 million readers even after the lie was documented by the Chicago Tribune? Seems kind of Fascist and Naziesque don’t you think?
Therefore, we determined the best course of action was to start a direct mail advertising campaign targeting a radius around your home address. We are soliciting online donations beginning 12/15 and ending 12/31. The amount of money we receive will determine the radius the direct mail campaign will reach. And considering how cheap direct bulk mailing is, I bet we cover a rather large area. Maybe throw in where you grew up as an added bonus? The flyer will excerpt the piece Klein wrote, Greenwalds subsequent annihilations, Ryan Singel’s blistering attacks in Wired, the Chicago Tribune’s retraction, your supposed “corrections”, and Glenn’s final blistering rebuttals for absolute proof of your lies.
We really don’t want to solicit the hard earned funds of our readers unless it is absolutely necessary. If you run the appropriate correction and publish the letters from Feingold, Holt, and the Judiciary Committee in Swampland where it costs you nothing, we will not feel the need to advance this campaign. However, if you allow the errors to stand uncorrected and the letters unpublished, then we will use our 1st amendment rights to set the record straight.
Finally, rest assured we advocate nonviolence and will not publish your home address online as part of the campaign. We actually respect a person’s right to privacy, unlike Time. We don’t feel requiring warrants before you listen in on American calls, is granting any new terrorist protections. It simply enforces the Constitutional protections granted all Americans. You should be ashamed about calling yourself anything other than propagandist/hack. You are certainly as un-American as they come. How do you look at yourself in the mirror after lying to 20 million?
Americans For Open and Honest Debate
I’m old enough to remember Kennedy quipping that US News & World Report had very little news and not much to report. When I’m at the dentist’s office (where I seem to be spending half my time these days…) I look for stuff like Southern Living or Better Homes and Gardens in hopes of finding a good recipe or two. The “news” magazines are a waste of paper.
It won’t even get that far..there aren’t enough votes to get it out of the Senate and to the DC USA.
OMG…slaps forehead…we are in a new war…W has invented a new war…it is the Global War on Knowledge (GWOK)….Jeebus…took me awhile to figure that one out….
When I was a kid Mother subscribed to TIME even though my newspaper reporter Dad often teased her the magazine was published for “readers who don’t like to think for themselves”. Naturally she renewed her subscription faithfully for the rest of her life.
No guts, no glory. I guess we won’t know unless we try, will we?
I vote for FULL COURT PRESS!!! ATTAAAAACK!
Its only our future that’s at stake.

Exactly! Anyone that has knowledge is a Terrorist…
Think about it… *g*
All of this is built on a series of fictions, that Joe Klein is a liberal, that Time is a serious journalistic enterprise, andthat facts have a liberal bias. Once you see past these things both Times and Klein’s actions become much more comprehensible. It’s about stroking an Administration that backs Time-Warner’s agenda.
BWA HA HA – Richard Wolfe of KO just said that “The Hawks have left this ship” and I heard it as “the Hawks have left this SHIT.”
it would seem the editors of time have no clue what a cc is and that it means there’s a paper trail regarding their lack of due diligence
they need to be drummed into the same status of “sourceless rag with no reputation for reporting facts
they are a major chord in the mighty Wurlitzer this administration plays
yet we are now the fourth estate and we actually have to keep the media honest even more then the government
… who is of course an acolyte of Orin Hatch (R-BCCI).
Foreign or Domestic… Intelligent Design…? Hello…!
W is conveniently left out, because he never knows anything.
Knowledge is the root of all Evil…
Someone mentioned U.S. News and World Report. Pick up this rag and “Time” and read them both thoroughly. After you’re done, ask yourself how informed you feel?
OT. The Beeb:
Now, would that be
military strikes against Iran “on a daily basis”
or
“military strikes against Iran on a daily basis” ?
I don’t think I’ve read Time with any enthusiasm since Eisenhower was in office, and then to see whether another speed record had been set out at Edwards, reported in the Science section. They were conscientious about that. However, refusing to let authors of the bill explain the bill is pretty raw. There is almost no news reporting anywhere; the entire reportage/broadcasting culture has become entertainment.
Boy, do I miss ‘preview’.
“Knowledge eeis pa’er”…
they attack all knowledge and their biggest enemy is the masses with knowledge
this is why they want to teach magic in the place of biological science, this is why they redact vital information concerning all things scientific
it is why they don’t want children to understand their own biological nature, it’s why they try to insist on “abstanance only” instruction when they know as a fact it is not nearly as effective as education
they don’t want us to understand science, politics, nature.
they want us to beging to believe in magic once again
they can control people who believe in magic
that’s why they insist magic is as valid a “theory” as evolution
they need us to be dumbed down, we know too much and knowledge is for the nobel class not for the common man
When I was in high school and college I loved “Time”. It was where I got my political insight. Those days are gone now. Sadly.
Anyone feel that we’re firing off one-line quips rather than setting up little conversations? Anyone attribute that to the lack of the ‘Quote this comment’ function? Has removing that function really altered the load on the servers?
one of the sayings those in power want to propagate so we are not so quick to aquire that knowledge which exposes them
knowledge is the cure for all evil
You mind if I say how disastrous I find the new format? There’s almost no content on the front page. Excepting the top thread, there isn’t enough of any thread showing to decide whether you WANT to read more.
Yeah, I know, if I don’t like it I can always go somewhere else. So for now, at least, cheerio.
i agree with this assesment, I hate having to go back to see what the person is responding to
now that we aer member only I can’t believe the quote button would add more pressure on the server then it can handle
I long for the quote button and the edit button too
My concern now is for the blogs. I don’t want them co-opted.
qwok, sounds like something you dip in.

That was the last time that I read anything new in Time..It was a story about US Military involvement in a country called Vietnam.
Time Magazine Sticks Fingers In Ears, Sings “La La La, I Can’t Hear You”
I think these characterizations of the US corporate media as bumbling fools that somehow manage in spite of their bumbling, to always end up promoting republican propaganda and stonewalling truth and democrats is dangerously misleading. The Time debacle is clear as bell that there is NO MISTAKE on the part of Time; that the whole promotion of lies and stonewalling of corrections (i.e., the truth) IS INTENTIONAL.
This is DEADLY serious. Hundreds of thousands of people have UNNECESSARILY died so far just in the last 6 years for US corporate media’s craven promotion of republican/neocon lies and suppression of truth. There is IN FACT …NO GREATER THREAT TO DEMOCRACY IN THE US, NO GREATER THREAT TO HUMANITY than the continued INTENTIONAL lies and deceptions enabled and promoted by US corporate media.
Progressives need to stop fooling around with this and get as deadly serious as the subject is…like Glen Greenwald did. Big Media MUST BE TAKEN DOWN! And if you don’t think Big Media is scheming furiously on ways to shut down the free flow of ideas on the internet, you’d be tragically wrong. It all comes down to getting Big Media first before they completely shut down access to the truth.
.
That needed a spew warning.
Speaking for myself only of course, I find the new format here refreshing.
Nice to hear that I’m not sitting out here being a grouch all by my lonesome, perris.
lmao
Time and News Week Magazines have always been just what they are today, Right Wing. The only difference is in the early days they were called “establishment”, another word for never question, blindly follow and do as your government tells you. They were the only two magazines allowed by the Indonesian Military Regime under Soeharto. You were imprisoned if caught with other publications or kicked out of the country if you were a Westerner.
Nothing has changed other than administrations get meaner and meaner. I must admit the latest intelligence report has put a big smile on my face. Shrub is sinking, sinking and sinking and still he says “nothing has changed”. I call that frozen in time.
Ya have to manually do it… Some of the zest has departed, yet, this is the site I thrive on, and, I have no inclination to depart anytime soon… 8-)

A.Citizen at hmmm above comment: that was a powerful and true comment. They are enablers. They are complicit. They are guilty.
Some of the skills needed to pull this off haven’t come naturally to Sen. Clinton. Despite her long exposure to the national limelight, she came late in life to a political career of her own, and has worked to develop her own voice. For example, she has never found it easy to give simple answers to questions. As First Lady, she once listened as White House press secretary Joe Lockhart briefly distilled for President Clinton what he, the aide, would tell reporters about some complex foreign-policy news.
She took him aside afterward, he says. “How do you do that?” she asked. “I need to learn how to do that. I was trained as a lawyer — I’ve always made an argument in paragraphs. I need to learn to speak in sound bites.” That was his clue, he recalls, that she was contemplating a Senate run.
;0)!
Anyone hear from Betsy? I saw a post earlier where she said she was in quite a bit of pain from today’s procedure. Hope she’s feeling better.
Way OT, but wanted to give a heads-up on an hour-long interview that Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzalez conducted with Lou Dobbs this morning. Amy opens up a GIANT can of whup-ass on Dobbs on the anti-immigration FUD that he has spread over the years. At several points during the interview, I actually felt a tad bit sorry for Dobbs (NOT…)
http://www.democracynow.org/20…..anchor_lou
Check it out!
Bring Time to the Men’s room. Wipe your butt.
Read today that Dobbs is going to have a radio show. Now he can beat up brown people in two places.
I saw it, and it was really intense….!!! I don’t think she and Juan actually successfully made their case though. It was in dribs and drabs, without a lot of back-up showing whether his citations were intentional…most weren’t even recent. It made me uncomfortable.
Not so. Leahy is integrity personified. He is following the rule of law in defense of the constitution. And the wheels of justice, as we know, grind slow, but they grind EXCEEDINGLY FINE.
Feel that kkkkarl? scooter? chimpy? big dick?
Well Gollee! Surprise, Surprise, Surprise… Jim Neighbors is a long time denizen of Hawai’i… *g*
Without folks like you we’d (progressives) be nothing my good friend.
Now, see, this would be an appropriate time for a resolution. “It is the sense of the Senate that Joe Klein and Time magazine are full of shit and should be taken out to the woodshed….”
That might be a bit uncomfortable. ;0)
From radioFreeWill this one goes to our honored guest tonight Joe Klein!
Goodnight sweetheart

No matter the ultimate judicial outcome…their names and their legacies will be eternally stained by their lies and their corruption, and rape of The United States of America and our Constitution. People will teach their children, and their children will teach their children…on and on.
OT – anyone have a link about the CA state government and the Freeway Blogger – something about cracking down on this great golden state patriot? What new fecklessness is this?
damn straight!
Well, the Republican choice in 2008 for prez might boil down to a choice between a Morman (Romney) and a Baptist (Huckabee). Oh dear. What to do?
What? Scarlett is being cracked down on? For hanging signs?
Scarlet P? What fuckery has transpired?
There was a comment about this in an earlier thread today. IIRC it was referring to signs posted on freeways in Mass., not Ca. If I can remember which post it was I see if I can find the link.
sadly, history is written by the victors…if they are not brought to the bar of justice they will rewrite history
in this world of theirs olie north is a hero, nixon was a hero, reagan was a hero
Hey you brat!
Haven’t heard anything, looking now. His site doesn’t show it…
Actually, the article was about cracking down on signs in MA, but the person who posted it thought it was about Scarlet P and I chimed in without looking at the linked article. It’s somewheres in the comments of BT’s Edwards’ post (and I appreciated your level voice, NPB).
Not in my family.
Research in the future will be interesting. Researchers won’t just go to a biographer or newspapers of record or published articles in journals or speeches. They will go to blogs to see what the people were saying and that will impact history.
I think it’s time for a nice round of scream therapy.
newspaperbrat-
Here’s the link regarding the freeway blogger.

If I were a Republican I’d be in at least a state of mild panic. My Choice in the ‘08 primaries might be between a Baptist (Huckabee), a Mormon (Romney) or a Catholic (Rudy). Good Gawd. I might be reduced to flip-flopping.
madmommy, link’s not working for me.
Bad Linky, MM!
I miss that function very much for the same reasons. It’s often too difficult to quote and especially to do nested quotes. It’s possible. It just makes the process much more cumbersome. So people are often leaving out the quoted comment and referring only to the comment number. Then we have to switch back and forth to see what was referred to, which people often don’t do. That makes the discussion and conversation much more limited. I really hope we get that functionality back. It’s an important part of what has made fdl so much a part of my life.
Thanks madmommy – my trusty Mac is no match for the off and on power in these parts all day. PG&E Pathetic Gruesome Enigma. :~(
i agree
Dang it! I miss preview…
It is comment 133 in the John Edwards cabinet post by Jane earlier today.
Okay. Just to let everyone know. I have decided on a new name. I used to post under “Joe Klein’s conscience”. Some of you way recognize the name. ;-) I chose it because he was a champion of the underdog.
yeah damn rolling black outs and cali servers would go down :/
i understand advertising is necessary … but it sure is odd seeing Ann Coulter’s ad here on FDL for email sign-up. ::laughing::
Worked for me…
lol
Karl Rove is tinkering. We must tinker back.
Did the link work for you?
You not serious are ya… My BS antennae are all a’quiver… ;-)
Hillary has made mistakes that were made worse by the fact that they were easily avoidable. And even if she didn’t catch them her staff should have. It undermines the whole candidate of experience argument that is at the core of her candidacy. It leads people to look past the shiny objects and to question how much experience she actually has after a largely undistinguished single term in the Senate.
In the new system, I always try a hard refresh before I conclude that a link is bad. That was the case with this one, too.
Agreed.
404, madmommy.
Huh?
Is that like being 86′ed?
*g*
It finally took me to the main page, what article is it…?
The idea is to deny the Republicans the WH. And to gain House and Senate seats. With an eye to the SCOTUS.
Not yet madmommy but will keep trying since it worked for newtonusr and we’re on the same state grid – can’t believe I said that cause I know it is a really stoopid thing to say. Hey everyone – so good to see the usual suspects gathering around even if some of ya are changing monikers.
this one by nelson, Nonconformity: Writing on Writing, essays, luuurve it!
p.s. using mac osx 11.4; not able to copy/paste links using firefox???
link didn’t work, madmommy.
This…
not willingly.
One dangerous thing about the new system is the “pushing” comments through. I’m finding it addictive, knowing how many new comments there are… It’s the “it’s only 3, so I’ll take a peek” syndrome!
I want Karl Rove so badly I can just about smell him.
Love ya, NPB. It’s fun to see changes in screen names, huh?
See my comment at 111. Maybe the link will work if you go to the original comment with the link. That’s how I found it and clicked on the link to get the addy so I could post it in this thread. At least I thought it worked…grrrr.
Mahalo, Newton…! Aloha, MM!
EEWWWW… Brain bleach, brain bleach….
I have another bone to pick with Time, ’sides Mr Klein:
http://www.time.com/time/world…..96,00.html
They’re givin’ shrub credit for authoring the new NIE (that totally humiliates him), as a means of defusing tension with Iran. Huh?????!
D:
How’s things CT?
I’m still finding it a little tricky to refresh comments. It’ll say there are some comments, but when I click to load, nothing happens. And I know I’m missing out! AArgh! But patience is a virtue. Calmly, we wait.
Please. As if he could author anything longer and more complex than the average Dick & Jane story.
Oh dear, madmommy. I don’t see a link at 111.
Eli is upstairs!
Oh, rich coming from you Loo Hoo, who made it through identity intact.
No links sweetie, it is directions to the original post with the link in question.
Oh, fer god’s sake. This is like the kids in my class tattling because someone was helping someone else with their homework. Who are we?
Loo Hoo? I was just foolin’ around, you know that, right?
OK, this is OT but a scary link someone sent me. TFH territory maybe but I’ve found a lot of their stuff credible …
Off to try some cross-checking.
Paddling furiously away… My Sweetie is on Abrams, right now… I *heart* Rachel… Has anyone else noticed how Dan has suddenly been mighty aggressive towards the WH these days… *g*
Got it madmommy ! Thanks to both you and neutonusr – the refresh worked fine.
I love you too Loo Hoo!
well, oops, paste didn’t or something, here’s the textstring:
http://www.globalresearch.ca/i…..8;aid=7529
yes, that happens for me too. i’ll click to load the new comments and sometimes they load and sometimes they don’t.
This is a variant of an old Tony Snow dodge. He would say that someone who was diametrically opposed to some Administration policy actually agreed with it. Here obviously Bush had to be behind the NIE because it totally undermines the Iran saber rattling he has been doing since including Iran in the Axis of Evil in his 2002 State of the Union speech.
Wow, that’s quite the kayak you’ve got there. Sat phone internet, cable TV, it’s like Snoopy’s doghouse.
Novista, thanks for that link. I bookmarked to read tomorrow. Chilling.
Yeah, I remember the late, unlamented Hugh Sidey. He’s the one who expressed relief that Ronnie and Nancy brought “class” back to the White House after my fellow Georgians had left. Yep, class. Like eating dinner on a TV tray while wearing your pajamas.
The TFHery begins in the section entitled “Genetically engineering a master race?” Notice that the article has few footnotes and is almost entirely based on one book, Seeds of Destruction. I’ve been looking for a good review and haven’t found one yet.
