Now THAT is an awesome picture.
We’re getting ready to be snowed in here, so we’ll be running errands this morning to make sure we’re prepared.
Is “I Am Legend” a remake of “The Omega Man?” That’s what I thought of when I saw the ads.
I was all set to post a series of puzzles up on Kos and I made a technical error, so I deleted the diary, and now I can’t post a new one. Oops. There goes my lazy plan for the morning :)
Hey! How’d I end up first? That never happens.
Good Morning egregious!
Good morning folks! Shoutout to Christy, we know you’re checking in on us :)
Thanks Julie. I love this photograph. And regarding your puzzles, it’s always best to have more than one plan for how to be lazy.
It won’t be home until I manage a zed.
I told them downstairs that we were up here. That owl looks pained by what he’s being asked to watch…smart bird!
Good morning, egregious. I just had to say good morning to you and to that gorgeous bird. Wow.
Another winning talking heads morning, I noticed George Will is up against three women. And even Tim Russert has a woman too!
Good morning!
Immigration Contractor Trims Wages
A government of the people, by the people and for the people.
P.S. Preview doesn’t work for me.
wow – I might actually be able to stomach both MTP and This Week this week…
I get such a kick outta watching George Will’s face whenever Katrina V. is on.
Morning, all. Snow here in the Northeast.
I got an email from the DNC about this. I hit the reply button, even though I’m sure they don’t read replies, and told them I don’t watch Fox, and that prominent Ds should boycott Fox as a way of demonstrating how biased they are.
Egregious:
Yeah. Maybe later I’ll try infrared photography of the snowfall.
‘morning Egregious! That picture is gorgeous. We’ve got a golf course a block from us (and a nature area connects to it), so we’ve got owls that occasionally visit the neighborhood, especially in winter. I love hearing them at night. At first it was scary, but now, just cool!
Have fun Julie–we’ve got lots of snow that’s topped by great layer of ice. Not exactly fun for walking the dog. Too early for the snow blower yet.
And not from The Onion, we have, by way of Atrios:
US says it has right to kidnap British citizens
No wonder Karen Hughes quit her job.
Marion—
Doesn’t he have the funniest expression on his face?
We have no snow blower, so it’s our own backs that will be suffering tomorrow :)
I’ve never seen an owl near where I live. We get hawks and lots of cool feeder birds, but no owls.
Are you in the midwest? We’ll be getting your snowstorm in a few hours.
Yes — rather like he smells something bad, possibly Turd Blossom?
Does anyone have the url for the American edition of the Guardian? I lost all my urls because I had to reset my computer, and I’m having trouble finding that one again. When I google it, I get article about the announcement but no linkys to the actual, and it also doesn’t seem to come up on Guardian UK search engine, believe it or not!
Actually, come to think of it– I’m going to have fun tonight, I think– if the snow isn’t too prohibitive, I’m going to try another version of this photo:
http://juliesmagiclightshow.com/?pic=2597
I think it would look really cool in the snow.
Oh, eg -
What an absolutely WIZARD bird pic! I love owls of every variety…absolutely no idea why…maybe partially because they seem to have an almost human face.
I think a nice new feature would put a link up to new posts right above or right below the ”leave your respone” box
Julie:
Yep, we’re in SW Wisconsin…mr. m. actually went out and bought a new snowblower last week. We’ve needed one for three years but found other things to spend the money on. Then, we got caught last year a couple of times and decided that life was too short (we have a long driveway…)
I usually head up to ct on sunday, back on monday night but my little sportscar is having a hell of a time staying straight so home bound it is this weekend
Maybe a decade ago, Sixty Minutes did a segment on U.S. bounty hunters who cross into Canada and kidnap people wanted in the U.S. If the kidnappers are caught here, they’ll be prosecuted, but if they can make it across the border with their victim, they’re protected by U.S. law. This happens — not a lot, but it happens.
From previous snows & all day snow yesterday, we now have about 10 inches on the ground in northern Minn. It’s beautiful with the tree branches heavy with snow cover. The snowmobilers & skiers are going to be ecstatic. We haven’t had this much snow accumulation by early Dec in a long time.
Am looking forward to seeing my guy, Senator Jim Webb, on Meet the Press. I don’t always agree with him but I do trust that he is looking for the truth.
Hey we could have had George Allen for another six years…or worse, seen Allen run for president. Allen probably would have been the candidate the Repubs are casting around for. Somebody who does the dog whistle racism, cleans up nicely for television, amicable in person, nice family, popular southern governor. He isnt very intelligent but apparently that’s not required for being president these days.
So the next time someone complains that nothing ever changes, I will be thinking about the not-Senator Allen.
Little Steven is gonna been on two shows? Gotta watch one of them. Maybe MTP ’cause I wouldn’t wanna miss David Broder either. Just got my tix yesterday for Springsteen/E Street Band here. It won’t be the same as seein’ him in Jersey, but he always does a good show.
So Beerfart, you found out I’m a girl? Fun to have pictures in the new site.
Karl Rove is going around blaming Congress and Democrats in Congress in particular for rushing America into war in Iraq. As hard as it is to believe, he’s saying that they rushed their vote so that it wouldn’t interfere with the election.
I seem to remember that they had to get the invasion done by the summer because it got too hot in the summer. Anyone else remember that?
Good morning. Actually, the owl photo reminds me somewhat of the look and view which first brought my wife to my attention, a thousand years ago. Or, maybe that’s some sort of perverted Rohrschack revelation.
Morning, pups. Here in the Southern Tier of NY, we’ve got about four inches of light powdery snow(we did not get the sleet beforehand), wind chill is -1F.
Oh yeah, There’s somethin’ else. I don’t think I’ll be tellin’ anybody here anything they don’t already know, but this just kinda crystalizes – for me at least – the bullshit we gotta deal with. I’m talking with a lady from S. America (who’s here legally and gainfully employed for the benefit of any wing-nut lurkers). I was bitching about the cost of braces for my kid and medical care in general. She told me that was one of the things about America that surprised her most- the fucked-up (not her word) health care system. (The other was how fat Americans are.) She told me a story about her husband’s friend. This guy needed some kind of dental work. It was less expensive for him to pay for round trip air fare, hotel in addition to the dentist and have it done in Columbia (he’s also here legally and gainfully employed) than to just have it done here.
This story didn’t taech me anything new about our health care system but it impressed me for two reasons: 1) When you here people praising our system and telling about how people from countries with “socialized medicine” come here for treatment, you may want to explain to them that people also leave this country to get treatment. I wish someone would determine how much this happens, if it hasn’t already been done; and 2) next time you hear about all the illegals flooding our emergency rooms for free health care, again, I doubt this story I’ve retold is an isolated case. There are probably any number of people – both those here illegally and those here legally – who go back to their country of origin to get some procedures done.
Crosstimbers, that’s hilarious.
I remember that and a whole host of other reasons. Also, the longer we waited the harder it was to keep together that coalition, ya know?
we should remember this egregious, elections do have consequences!
I wonder how many lies Miss Piggy Rover is going to tell today. I don’t know if I can stomach watching IT on Fixed News, so I think I will read about it after that abomination is over!
Good morning all, Have a great day!
I remember a host of reasons, but never that they wanted to get the vote over with before an election. Apparently when they asked Andrew Card about what Rove said, he laughed.
I think that Rove will increasingly be regarded like someone’s crazy aunt. Not soon enough for me, but eventually.
Mrs. Bilbo says the Washington Post has run a piece on how Americans travel overseas (e.g. Thailand) to get health care. Can’t provide a URL, unfortunately, but apparently this is not all that uncommon.
Huh?
Where am I? Oh, the new Lake.
This being the Sunday Talking Heads, I’m curious whether Donna Brazile thinks that the new FDL look could be a problem for Dems in the fall.
A quick Google search came up with this:

There are loads more, to other countries as well.
It’s Larry Craig in Can’t Stop the Toe-Tapping! : Soon to be A FABULOUS New Musical!
Hi, Retirin’! Great to see you!
“Gotta tap,
Gotta tap, gotta tapppppp….”
Years ago, I heard a Brit asked about the complaints about their health system on one of the late night talk shows. He replied by noting that there has never been any serious effort to revert to the prior system. It always seemed to me that this was the telling response to all of the claims about the European and Canadian systems. No one seriously tries to change them back to a system like ours.
Now THAT was funny.
Yeah. And I started to type that I didn’t know you were a girl and changed it to “I thought she was a guy.” I had diversity training all day Friday. Not supposed to say “girl.” I’m still getting used to the site. Like, anybody who’s ever read the comments I put here knows that I should get the FDL award for worst/laziest speller. It’s not that I’m a that bad speller. I’m a bad typer and ofetntimes just too lazy to use the spell check. I went to use spell check today and couldn’t find it. The old site had a box to click that said “SPELL” or someting like that. It took a little while before I noticed the “ABC” thing above. In general, I;’m not likin’ it now, but it’s just a matter of getting used to it. Besides, we all come for the content, not the visuals. (PS. My spell check isn’t working)

Thanks. I’ll look for it. I figured this was far from an isolated incident.
Hugs to Marion. I feel your pain on the name thing.
Good morning from L.A. Frost’s definitely on the pumpkin here- It was 39 degrees in Santa Monica last I checked. The cold won’t last, but a good excuse to crank up the fireplace for the 1st time in a long while.
Greatly looking forward to Professor Cole’s q&a later. Meanwhile, here’s a Sun. NYT feature I posted a link to last night- director Paul Chan stages Waiting for Godot in the still wrecked Gentilly neighborhood of NOLA. Think Becket might approve:
A Broken City. A Tree. Evening.
Beerfart,
In a burst of un-PC I actually think it’s funny when people call me Girl. Maybe when I was younger it would have seemed more insulting but now it just makes me laugh.
Oh and sorry but our dear looseheadprop has a lock on First Prize for misspellings. No contest there.
Thanks. I’m off to claim the TV so i don’t miss Steve Van Zandt. Maybe my apolitical wife (”they’re all the same”) will even watch that.
you’re lucky!
Hope you report back…
I have known several legal US citizens who have gone to cities in Mexico for dental care. My dental coverage will cover 1/2 of a root-canal/crown before annual benefits maxed. That means about $1000 out-of-pocket per tooth. For 2 grand in Mexico I’m told you can have a beautiful smile.
If you’re willing to install Google toolbar in your IE or Firefox browser, it has a feature that will provide on-the-fly spell checking as you type. I use this all the time and it pretty much keeps my on the straight and narrow.
We would have lower cost medicine too, if we’d simply unleash the miracle of the marketplace by dropping all governmental regulations and not allowing all these expensive malpractice suits. That’s what the Republicans tell me.
My price quote was a guess, but these are not.
Mexican Dental Vacations, who woulda thunk it?
Of course it doesn’t help if you just type a wrong, but properly spelled word. .
mymeHI eg
I’ve heard him lecture a couple times- wonderful. Even wrote down some questions for today’s book talk, which I never do ;-)
Raven!
How’s it going?
From The Truthy Wahington Post:
Ari Fleischer, the White House press secretary at the time, said Daschle had pressed Bush over the summer to bring the matter to Congress but for consultation, not necessarily a vote. Bush decided to seek a vote authorizing force, Fleischer said. “It was definitely the Bush administration that set it in motion and determined the timing, not the Congress,” he said. “I think Karl in this instance just has his facts wrong.”
My bold and my comment:
The Decider had already decided and he was in a big hurry. This fact is now well-documented. If America had an impartial media everyone would already know this.
Gotta scoot for a while. See you all later.
Olbermann cover it very well. The rest merely parrotted what Rove say and mentioned tha the Democrats disagreed — so the matter is in dispute.
Hucksterbee talks to God
A direct pipeline. Aren’t we in luck. Again.
Thanks for that, I have that feature going, love it!
but didn’t know from whence it came to explain to anyone else about it.
I’m still bumping into the furniture here, but I’m getting kinda comfortable.
Morning everyone. Nice owl! In some parts of the world they are seen as sorcery avatars. Perfect, for the crew of Rethugs and neo-cons in the administration and MSM.
My recollection is that Senator Daschle was called treasonous, cowardly, etc., by the right for saying that he though we needed a little more information on the WMD situation.
Rove will next say Hans Blix rushed us into war.
Elliott @68 (or anyone) – a technical question -how are you able to include another comment in your comment? Thankx
So, on a rainy morning (we in Central Ohio are getting off lucky) have you come out with any pictures of late, Julie? :)
And the Iraq invasion would have been a success if Bill Clinton hadn’t made Saddam get rid of his WMDs already. So the failure of the Iraq war is really Clinton’s fault.
Richmond, to quote someone else I think you have to do it manually.
Cut and paste the quote into the edit box, then highlight the phrase with your mouse, then look at the little line above the box where there are quotation marks and click that.
It just…might…work
A bunch of interesting things in the NYT today. Brilliant piece on Malawi’s move against the World Bank, USAID and the Brits to solve the hunger problem (in keeping with Naomi Klein), i.e. screw the free market and instead subsidize fertilizer and seeds for local farmers.
Also Frank Rich does a takedown of Bill (and Hillary) Clinton on his efforts to reshape his war history , and there is a piece addressing the fillibuster problem (the 60 vote issue). And, there is a strong article on the total corruption in Iraq.
My sense (to pick up a post yesterday) is that MSM will also begin to see the writing on the wall in terms of the election in 2008 and will be turning sharply against the moral corruption of the current administration.
here’s how I do it, first I copy the text I want, usu whole comment, then I click ”reply”
Down in the blank comment box, I click the little Quote icon, insert the cursor between the [ blockquotes ] there and paste in text. easy as pie!
Egregious – thanks, but when I go to reply, I just get a blank page so, in short, nothing here to cut and paste except air and white noise :-)
Left a note in EPU for perris and SanderO.
Here in mid-Michigan we only got 3 inches instead of the forecast 5-8 inches overnight. I’m sure they got a lot more on the west side of the state since it wasn’t a noreaster. At least we got enough for the kids to do the shoveling by themselves — I didn’t have to go out and do it with them, which I generally have to do with 5 inches or more.
Heavy and wet snow, too, if that makes any difference to you folks farther east of us. Great snowball-making snow!
Okee dokee, gotta get the xmas lights up for the princess!
BTW, egregious, you and I need to catch up some time soon!!
Good morning egregrious, and pups everywhere. New gigs, very nice.
Richmond, don’t hit reply. Start fresh as if it were a new comment. Here at the new house Reply simply *refers* to the previous comment by the name of the author and the comment number. hth = Hope this helps.

From your lips/typing fingers to God’s ear…
Hi Millineryman! my shins hurt but I’m liking it here!
Oooh Christmas lights! Gonna put them up today. LOL I typed Christymas…guess we’re missin’ the ReddHedd while she’s on vacation.
Hey, Egregious, looks like you got some pretty big shoes to fill this morning, and you did it well.
Nice to see that Russert thinks we only have two Senators seeking the Presidency. Interesting how he asked Webb whether he thinks Hillary would be a good president, and the same question on Obama, but didn’t deign to ask the same about Dodd or Biden, also colleagues of Webb. No doubt whether there’s fair and honest reporting going on here. There’s decidedly not!
Elliott and Egregious. Wait, I get it, the new system with the sign-ins is intended to stop members of the ziggarat clan of which I have been an active member. Clearly, there are different classes of “citizens” at FDL now, some “citizen” groups can quote others, others can quote only white noise and air. So here is my quote for the day:
” !”
(snark for the technically backward classes)
Thank you SO much. I kept trying it with /us at the end, which gets just the U.S. summary from the U.K. edition. Silly me to forget that the U.S. of A. is the only “America.”
Or, copy the segment you want to quote before you hit reply. hit reply, then paste it in to the resulting text box, highlight it and hit the ” button. Then type your message after the [/blockquote] as you have done in the past.
Egregious: thanks again, I am doing a cold “response” (not a reply) here. But have no access to anyone’s responses so I could cut them. The only thing I could do is retype them.
HI EE,
Sorry to hear about the shins, why do they hurt?
Hey, don’t tell everyone. I kinda liked being a member of the ‘better class’ here who knew how to do it. Adds a bit of rightwing cache to an otherwise leftie blog.
with Noonan, bush, rove, mccain, and specter out fouling the air, it looks to be a bigger big stinkpile (takes cue from Atrios) than usual: the crap, she’s agonna fly.
.
Richmond, what I did was copy the text of your post, hit the “Reply” button, which adds the “Replying to Richmond” bar to my post, pasted your text into the comment box, and am now typing this. Inside my comment box that I’m typing in I re-highlighted your text, and then clicked on the “quotation mark” thingy, which block quoted your text. It’s clumsy, and a bit of a kludge, but it works.
Here on the northern California coast, we are bracing for a big storm coming in off the Pacific. Winds 50-60MPH. My brother, who lives on the northern Oregon coast is hunkered down for 70-80MPH winds. The wind is whistling around the doors and windows as I write. Scary.
Hey, don’t tell everyone. I kinda liked being a member of the ‘better class’ here who knew how to do it. Adds a bit of rightwing cache to an otherwise leftie blog.
The infamous e-Darwinism.
Sofistic, hope you and your brother stay safe in the storm. Keep us posted please?
from bumping into the new furniture here! *g*
Long but important story in the LATimes about
how Rep. Tom Davis, Sen. Charles Grassley, their lobbyist
ex-aides and various other miscreants helped kill a possibly vastly improved anthrax vaccine.
Brought to you by your National Security Daddies.
Were that the case, I’d be a dodo already. Just happen to be a longtime fan of cntrl C, cntrl V. Most useful thing I every learned on my computer & I use it every chance I get.
HA! Gotcha, check Facebook, I sent ya a message.
A side benefit of having a darling Brazilian daughter in law is that when we go visit her family in Brazil, it’s a good time to get the dental work done, the prescriptions refilled, etc. And the food and the beach are also wonderful for our health!
Marion and twolf1 and others. I can’t copy the text of anyone else, i.e. by my standard method of putting a cursor on it, hightlighting it and cutting and pasting. I have no access in this Leave Your Response to anything else. Hmmm, elitism at the new FDL site against the ancient Zigarrat clan. Down with the bosses. Pelt the politicos. Up with the voiceless, deprived, depraved. (Good rant for a Sunday am).
Could it be the owl that is doing this. Never did trust a bird that could turn its head 365 degrees.
Me too. Hopefully we’ve passed copy and paste to descendants.
MY first comment ithe new digs! Mornin Eg, Mornin all!
I got the DCCC email about the Rove appearance on Fox. I hoping it’s because they are planning to try to give him a smack down on his crazy “the AUMF force the President to invade Iraq, when he was still trying to use other means” bullfeathers.
I wonder if they will succeed. It’s actually a nce idea to take the fight into GOP territory for a change. I may be forced to watch FOX this morning.

I just cut and pasted your comment as an experiment.
Help! Help! Help! The owl won’t let me use my control V and Control C to capture anyone else’s words. Down wth the so-called “better” class. Down with Timber, down with the harpies of Vs and Cs. The owl put up a glass wall in front of my keyboard. Down with new technlogy.
Richmond, instead of cutting, try copying, see if that works. You can’t “cut” someone else’s comments.
Loosehead! So glad to see you here at the new place!
good morning, all – coffee is ready… it’ll warm you right up.
egregious. I can’t get near anyone else’s words in my Leave Your Response box. Do you need firefox for this? Seriously this is bugging me. I am usually quite technically with it!
Snowing beautifully here on Long Island’s North shore. I live in a nature preserve so you can imagine how magical is was to wake up and look outside the window this morning.
I forgot to buy eggs yesterday (we’re out) so I made baked apples for breakfast. The house smells heavenly and I’m just about to leave the keyboard to get some hot coffee and my apple. Then I’m gonna snuggle up with an afghan in the window seat so I can see the snow and then
turn on FOX.
What thing is out of place here? *g*
Ain’t natural selection a beautiful thing to watch. Sort of like sitting in lawn chair, gazing of the Seranghetti (sp?).
OldCoastie and LHP – Help me! They have me in a quote-less box at this site. Its a plot against the old school ziggaratites I think – or its that damned owl.
OOOOHH, looseheadprop — baked apples! One of my absolute favorite things in the whole world. Enjoy them! [drool]
Richmond – first, highlight the text you want to quote. Then, ctrl/c on the keyboard. Next, hit the “reply” button in the lower right hand corner.
Now, go to the white text box, get the cursor blinking in the box and hit ctrl/v (paste). Highlight the text again and hit the little quote button at the top. Remove your highlight and type your reply…. seriously – it works.
I feel sorry for all you folks who are snowed in. :)
Forecast has it in the lower 60’s for the next week, here in sunny Albuquerque.

Reply: Rove will use the opportunity to enforce his bogus asssertion and the MSM will assist him. There will be faint rebuttal, but the meme will gain traction. There are too many sh*tstirrers like Limbaugh and Russert and the others (dutiful water carriers) to effectively counter the meme with a handful of good soldiers (like Olbermann) on our side. Its the old repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth.
Timbers – that was meant with a ;-) (Well sort of). And OldCoastie. How do you highlight text if you have none in your box? (serious qestion).
Let’s be careful about telling fellow commenters to shut up, ok? I know everybody’s a little jumpy about getting used to the new site, but please, have a heart. We’re doing the best we can. Let’s try to work together here, alright?
Good morning egregrious, and pups everywhere. New gigs, very nice.
testing cut & paste
Having a Seinfled moment here. Should there really be an exclamation point after “Click here to load them”?
Thanks for the correction. In fact, I copied and pasted. I did not cut and paste.
BFL~ The fact that people leave the US for foreign health treatment is so common that some countries are promoting “Health Tourism” programs. Places I know where this is occurring include Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines. Essentially they offer hotels, in- and out-patent services, surgeries, complete evaluations beforehand, and a “recovery holiday” in a resort that is suited for the types of recovery activities that one can undertake. They do things like expensive orthopedic, dental, cosmetic, or optical surgeries, as well as a lot of things that aren’t generally covered under most Medical Insurance Plans.
Many of these have created special centres with Top Line medical diagnosis equipment, such as MRI and Genetic screening, etc. The medical service sin these countries use the income derived from these centers to upgrade their own emergency facilities. While not all locals can have access to the MRI and other diagnostic services, it means that the most critical cases can usually benefit.
The costs are held down in these countries because doctors and nurses have lower salaries (but also receive gov’t subsidized educations, lower Cost of Living, and less fear of expensive litigation), the other staffing costs are lower, drug costs are reduced as is accomodation, food and other services.
Good morning egregrious, and pups everywhere. New gigs, very nice.

Omelet with chive flavored goat cheese. Hold out your plates.
Good morning.
How does one respond to the story of the teacher imprisoned for allowing her kids to name a Teddy Bear Mohammed?
Richmond – highlight the text in the ORIGINAL comment… then paste it into the comment box…
Omelet with chive flavored goat cheese. Hold out your plates.
me!me!
Timbers (and everyone) I was joking. Sorry. I meant to add a smile. I actually think it is funny. But, at the same time I am curious why this isn’t working for me.
This is an experiment to see if I can quote
More, please.
I knew you were and so was I. Seems like the only thing you need to do is highlight and copy the original post before scrolling down and pasting in the blank response box.
Snowing here in Manhattan too.
Somehow I don’t see my earlier comment on this subject (including after hard refresh).
I’ve been looking for you LHP. A few of us in the NYC area are going to arrange a meetup. We’d love to have you join us. Any interest/availability?
So your readin’ along in the comments and you see one you want to quote and respond to. The first thing you do is highlight and copy (control C) the portion you wish to copy. Keep in mind that you aren’t in the area that you would type your comment yet at this point.
Now, hit the reply link on that particular comment that you wish to quote, you will be taken to the area where you would normally type in a comment. Click in the comment entry box so you see the blinking cursor there, now hit control V and the desired portion of the comment you wish to quote will be copied into the comment entry box.
Next step, highlight the entire pasted portion and click on the ” button. the blockquote tags will appear around the text you had highlighted. Now proceed to type your reply after the [/blockquote]. Last step – submit comment.
cool!
I also like that the comments udate only appears if there are new comments
Richmond, I tried to “copy” as in “copy and past” #133, which would have therefore create a ziggerat.
I can’t get it to copy at all.
We zig monsters have been thwarted! Ooooh, clever
Good morning! Just watched MTP. Webb as always direct, intelligent, thoughtful. I’m thinkin’ Senate leader…..
Russert must’ve decided to get his scheiss together this morning. Maybe it’s an attempt to pre-empt the whispered Imus smackdown on his return show tomorrow.
Whatever the reason, the trivial [Carville Matalin lovefest], tiresome [Carville Matalin lovefest], and the tedious [yeh, them]…not in evidence this week. An panel of reporters that brought real thought and issues to the table. Stenographers not in evidence.
‘Bout damned time.
You can’t swear and say shut up and then make everything ok by adding a smiley face. I would like to see us treat each other better than that. Good: asking each other for technical help with the new site. Not so good: blaming each other. To quote Prairie, we can do better.
My problem (among the ones I am willing to share) is that my computer doesn’t seem to allow me to use an “active” cursor on the text of the various comments here.
One friend had dental work in Costa Rica, another had dental work in the Philippines and another had a belt installed around her stomach (weight loss surgery) in Mexico. All have survived and each has raved about lower costs, cleanliness, attention, excellent care, and friendly and abundant staff.
richmond – what browser are you using?
Suffering from withdrawal, us OCD folks, who used the refresh button instead of pharmas.
Egregious I apologized OK. It is a generational thing, perhaps.
Control C/V works for me (Firefox on a Mac).
Just found the new RSS feed link, so I’m a happy camper now. Really love the “new comments” updates!
Prairie! Just talkin’ about you.
I like to think between C&L and FDL we are beginning to bring some accountability to the Sunday morning shows.
OK -
I tried copy & paste everything Marion said @ 95 (to include her block quote to Richmond) plus following her directions….I *think*.
What I got in the “Leave your response” box includes a red box w/an “X” in it in the upper right hand corner where “Preview” normally sits and the “submit comment” button is faded.
Will try following OldCoastie’s directions next. Sorry to be such a bother, ya’ll. Working on a Mac leads some of us to assume transparency will be transparent.
Apology story. When my son was young, I taught him that, if he got caught doing something wrong, he should apologize & say he’d try not to do it again. We live in a building with lots of old folks & few children, so over the years there were several run-ins. On one occassion, he came home to tell me that he had done exactly what I had advised him, and the old bittie’s response was: “That’s not good enough.”
I am still using internet explorer because it is the only thing that works with the student chat room I run for my class this term. Also, for images it has tended to be quicker.

Much as I would love to, it would kinda screw up that whole “anonymous” poster thingy. Which is why I don’t go to YearlyKos.
It’s really hard to maintain the cover sometimes. Sigh.
How do you put in a link with descriptive text? It used to be when you pasted the link in, the next step allowed a place for descriptive text. Do we have to put in our own HTML now?
I understand. But maybe some day.
Scarecrow -on the story (since I can’t quote you). All I can say is that NeoCon radio shock jock Wiener/Savage – and others still on our MSM call for the killing of Moslems all the time. Clearly their MSM is as looney as ours is.
Interesting program on C-SPAN2. Author tracing back a lot of D problems in defending themselves again Rs to McGovern’s failures. Don’t agree with everything he says, but much of it is spot on, and the framing is interesting.
if you know the HTML, it helps… I’m not going to use the official v-shaped parenthenses here but after you make your link look for the )(/a) at the end of it… get your cursor right in between the )( and type your descrpitive text…. it’ll take…
This was a dischordant note this morning. I took it from another slant, though. That Russert stopped at Clinton and Obama and didn’t go on to Edwards, who is in a virtual tie in the top tier. [oooh, goodie, I did the quoting and it worked]
Hm, I think that’s Ann in AZ at 87’s quote not mine. But I don’t disagree with the sentiment.
Test.
So OldCoastie!
I hear we’re back in business fighting the siphoning off of presidential electoral votes in California. What’s the latest on the duplicate initiatives?
Rayne,
I picked up the comment in EPU land. Why do you suppose that we never discuss capitalism as it is practiced and not as the theoretical construct.
Everyone pays homage to the bottom line and capitalism makes no bones about it. Its product and services hardly matter, a corporation is simply a machine to create profit for shareholders and top management. Employing people is nothing more than a feudalism. People need work to survive so they are forced to accept everything that is rained and reigned down on them. Workers and consumers have fewer and fewer choices, some none, and how is that “freedom”?
Even the notion of voting in a corporation is a perverted notion of what democracy is about, because larger shareholders get more voting power and so dominate the policy of the corporation in their interest.
This is much like how our own politics work with the insertion of money into the process. More money, more access. And the whole lobby system is built on not only spreading cash around, but having the connections to do it. Cronyism and capitalism go hand in hand and have completely subverted the workings of democracy.
We will never have a democracy unless we remove money from it as the currency of expression. We can never have a democracy is power is able to be concentrated and protected.
Unless politicians are prepared to swallow the bitter pill of not having all that power and money thrown at them, and war chests for campaigns which only are money for the media really… a kind of corporate welfare, we won’t have anything resembling a democracy. We don’t have one now and basically only rich people can play.
new thread from looseheadprop
nice job, Waccamaw!
Thanks, OldCoastie
I used to be able to write HTML as easily as I write English, but it is amazing how you forget all the programming languages and tricks you worked so hard to learn after you retire.
Guys the D’s problems are because they such up to corporate crony capitalism and are afraid to stand up for the workers or even the middle class. As a result they can’t frame the issues properly and always fall for the diversions about family value issues when the real deal is economics – crony capitalism.
Hillary plays that one very well and Wall street has taken not and so Ds and Rs are essentially fine with them as long as they can keep crony capitalism going.
The media makes out like bandits with these billion dollar election cycles. Where does all that money go for? Staffer’s salaries? Yea right.
Okay I am completely thrown off by this new set up. Change sucks.
Has anyone seen the Webb interview on MtP? I am dying to know what some of you thought of his assessment of Iraq and also his comments regarding Chimp and Iran.
4 letters for username? I’ve always been just mui! Arghh
Sh*t I give up. I eneded posting the same thing three times.
hmmm, but it looks like I inadvertently clicked the reply button for the preceding comment. I’m thinking it’s an easy mistake…to click on the reply right above the comment #, but that’s actually for the preceding comment. Logical…yet slippery *g*
So here’s what worked slick for me. Highlight and copy (control-C, bless you DOS) the text in a comment, click the reply at the END of the comment. In the leave your response window, first click the quotemark in the top bar. Then paste your copied text between the carats [control-V]. Then go to the end, after the backslash blockquote [control-end] and start typing your own comment.
And I still miss Wordstar.
Would be nice to have confirmation from headquarters but apparently this little sucker *will not* let you make “ziggys”.
OC @ 163 -
Nawh….not quite. It seems to bury the second block quote all in one which is not good for accurate attribution. Me [sic] head hurts! I kinda agree with some pups about ziggys getting irritating at times but it would be nice if the “reply” would at least put in a single person’s comment w/o having to go thru the Control C/V business.
It still will not work for me because I am unable to highlight anything.
well, eg… after I took a short course in reading comprehension (and rested my Kindergarten Friday weary brain), I went back and took another look… I’m guessing AG-speak is not my strong suit.
There are 4 different initiative proposals regarding the CA vote, but 3 of the are designed as counter measures to the vote-splitting ones.
Current situation: The original initiative is still withdrawn. The duplicate initiative is in trouble, but I’m still trying to calculate what those difficulties are. It looks to me like they don’t have enough money to get the signatures out of hock from ARNO, the signature gathering company.
I have not heard of one person seeing any signature-gatherers any place (and I suspect it is because of the money situation).
The duplicate initiative proposal was approved for circulation by the State on 9/5/07. As far as I can tell, they made their last big push for signatures during the weekend before Thanksgiving. Which means, if my chicken scratch is accurate, they only had about 6 weeks to gather 435,000 signatures. That’s a lot of sigs on an unpopular initiative… seems unlikely to me.
Despite all the reports that this initiative must be turned in to the Sec. of State by 11/30, the actual due date is 2/4/08… I’m not sure why the earlier date is being pushed in news reports and on the blogs.
I wrote the LA Times guy about his article… got a “thanks” back, but no new information. I sent him a link to John Dean’s latest post on FindLaw…
we shall see…

Richmond @ 170 -
{{{ I . feel . your . pain. }}}
Hang in, darlin’…on the positive side, at least you *can* get thru to the Lake. Late yesterday I was beginning to think I’d never be able to talk to you guys again. Personally, I’m gonna take a break, get some bait out of the frig and go throw the crab pots in the waterway.
OldCoastie,
Aw, that’s a shame.
Thanks for the update on the California initiative. As a soon to be Cal resident I’m trying to get up to speed on what you guys are facing.
Mornin’ everyone! Tis is a test to see if I finally got in.
a crying shame, eg… ;-)
I’m trying to fashion a letter to the local repug club that doesn’t sound like its coming from a DFH, asking about their pledge of a $100k… I want to see if I can create enough doubt that the money doesn’t go thru.
a little subversive aggitatin’…
OldCoastie—
Good times…
Egreg says:
Excuse – another test . . .
Hey the bottom of an old thread is the perfect place for test drives! How do you think I learned? [painfully slowly, is HOW I learned…]
Sorry – another test.
Thanks, seems to work.

Business Lobby Presses Agenda Before ’08 Vote
My first time at the ‘new’ site. How do I quote a previous post?
I’m not crazy about having an ‘account’ with password, but for this site…
I love a nice afghan. My mother made two for me and they are very comfy.
One is larger than the other and so I use it on cold nights. It doesn’t stand out though. It’s done in fall leaves colors. Oh, there’s a matching pillow for a matching set.
It’s getting cold here, but we haven’t had a snow. I’m not anxious to see it either. I’m not really a snowbird, despite having been raised here in West Va. (the ‘middle east’ of America).
Both The Omega Man and I Am Legend are based on the story “I Am Legend” by Richard Matheson
