I love this new set of ads from the Center for American Progress. Here’s just one.

Teddy!
Hi teddy!
Great ad.
I let downstairs know teddy
Hi Alicia, hi ydj, hi Suzanne, hello Bets!
Thanks Teddy. Great ad. I’m a progressive because I believe in fairness and because I was raised to think of a “we” society and not a “me” self-centeredness.
I love that ad. It’s time we started bragging about being progressive, about being liberal, instead of allowing conservatives to keep using ‘liberal’ as a pejorative.
Alicia, long time no chat. How are you?
I am progressive because i am america at its best.
Hello again, Teddy.
my only bitch with that ad is they say ‘health insurance for all’ instead of health care for all.
By the way, my avatar is one of the SF Zoo’s ladybear orphan twins. I took the picture myself when the fiance and I visited. Since I’m a bear (and there’s a FirePup Krewe with the Bear Creek label) I thought it was a terrific choice.
Don’t tell people she’s a girl, okay?
Excellent ad. Simple, no bashing anyone, true.
I had not noticed that, Suzanne, and I usually yell “health care” at the candidates whenever they say “health insurance” on the teevee!
Musta been the pretty pictures that distracted me….
i is for the PROgressives, cause we is agin the REgressives.
and i feel that social justice is our moral responsibility.
i join with all progressives in supporting social justice as our civil responsibility.
as a Democrat, i feel that social justice is my political responsibility
and i oppose and resist the regressive elements in the Democratic Party.
what makes you asked?
(goes to watch the CAP video.)
Is the correct answer “I’m a progresive because I’m *NOT* Feeling Good About America, I’m Feeling Good About Me”…? No, that’s probably not it, is it?…
I’m a progressive because I believe in liberty and justice for all.

Can you imagine an America where an enfranchised minority would give the vote to a disenfranchised majority? It gives me chills when Hillary Clinton tells the story about the ninety-year-old women who come up to her at rallies and say they are so excited to vote for her for President, since they remember when women couldn’t vote.
Maybe every man thought he was simply getting two votes. In my parents’ household, it didn’t work out that way. When my father left to go vote, he always said, “I’m leaving to go cancel out your mother’s vote now!”
Not so much later in life; he was disillusioned with the GOP. But it took him a while to come over to the light.
bears are noble creatures
40 Hour Work Week.
saw a bumper sticker said
“The Weekend”
brought to you by your Labor Union.
They are particularly noble when they are standing up with their paws on the glass, in hip-deep water and looking down at you. It’s a wonderful exhibit they’ve been put in, saved from being put-down, but when they rear up and are just a foot from you — you realize “I will never be this close to a bear again and live.” The glass must be very strong, because they like to bang on it.
Marriage Equality: That’s why I’m a Progressive.
let’s see, my grandmother, if she were alive, would be 110 years old. She was unbelievably proud the very first time she voted – talked about that her entire life. I’m thinking she would really think it was something to vote for Clinton.
teddy, my dad was a dem and my mom a repub – they would always cancel out each other’s votes – was a running joke between them two. i believe the only time they did not was when they both voted for JFK.
my mom is now a recovering former republican – she’s registered independent.
If it had not been for the early Progressives, we might not have any national parks.
And would probably have a lot fewer bears.
I wonder, is the tag “progressive” really likely to find traction with a person who finds “liberal” suspicious? “Progressive” feels (to me at least) a little farther-out-there than liberal. Which seems unlikely to help that particular problem.
Put another way: What problem is this ad campaign trying to solve, exactly? Not that there aren’t problems, I just want to understand which one(s) is (are) the target.
That’s what I’m feeling too. Look at the rest of the candidates. Except for Obama (no comment) all white males.
Hi Betsy! I’m good! Just finished my book, and waiting to see what’s next. Ball’s out of my court now.
Teddy,
I once bottle-fed a little bear cub at Ghost Ranch in NM. Her name was Goldie and I was told she was mated to Smokey the Bear, but I don’t know if that’s true.
OK, good night, all… school day tomorrow.
I don’t see it that way at all. To me, Progressive is to progress, to see progress. Conservative is to conserve, to stop change, to hoard.
I think Jeebus was a progressive too.
Sleep well OC
I think so too. Whenever I get back to Italy, I’m going to take pics of all the cool sandals Jesus and those cats wore.
richardson is mexican.
kucinich is extraterrestrial.
Jesus didn’t live in Italy though …
My wife went to church today. NOT a fundamental church; no, a liberal church. Indeed, dare I say a progressive church? So she was talking to a woman who whispered that her husband was not going to vote for Obama—because he is a Muslim!!!
I can only assume that this Big Lie is circulating on right wing radio and right wing blogs. I am baffled as to where a member of my wife’s church would have heard it. I choose to blame it on the Republicans and not on Obama’s primary opponents. I hope I am right about that.
Why Dollar May Be Set for a Rebound
Wall Street Journal – 1 hour ago
By JUSTIN LAHART Beating down the dollar has become a popular sport lately. But the greenback may be about to get off the mat. The dollar’s decline this year has been unrelenting.
Jeez, hard to believe the Iowa caucus is only one month away.
…not that there is anything wrong with being a Muslim, of course! But it is not true, and it is an untruth that could undoubtedly lose Obama a lot of votes if people believed it.
It’s those right-wing viral e-mails. That’s where that story has gone around.
There are more pictures of Jesus and Mary in Italy than in Jerusalem I’ll betcha, Betsy!
To me being Progressive is all about looking to the future, trying to make this country a better place for everyone, not just a select few. The Republicans seem to spend all their time trying to disenfranchise those who they don’t think deserve to share in the benefits of our society: the poor, immigrants, gays, people of color, people of faiths other than Christianity, women and any one who disagrees with their crazy ass political views. Their candidates are ridiculously rich, arrogant, isolationist, racist, homophobic, misogynistic Christian extremists who want to be dictators, not president. It never fails to astonish me why so many people support candidates who will do everything in their power to screw them over. It’s like watching the same movie over and over idiotically expecting a different ending.
Well, your wife’s co-parishioner may have read it in the Washington Post last week. Shocking article, on page one, about the “internet rumors” about Obama. Never, ever did the article call them falsehoods, or lies.
i have noticed an increase in the anti hillary emails sent to me by my kin. there is an occasional anti obama one (usually dealing with his middle name and saying he is muslim) but they are not an prolific as the anti hillary ones.
Loo Hoo, I agree, that’s how I see it too. But the ad isn’t necessarily for us. It’s for people who need some convincing (or maybe just reminding) that ‘progressive’ is good. And I still think that to a person who doesn’t like ‘liberal’, ‘progressive’ is likely to seem worse. Maybe partly because (as per yellowdog jim above) it’s inferring that if you’re not progressive, you must be ‘regressive’ — and nobody’s gonna like that.
I still think we need to proudly reclaim the word ‘liberal’. I do like the ad for that reason. There is a difference between ‘liberal’ and ‘progressive’, as liberal infers ‘freedom’, while progressive also implies ‘moving forward’ and working towards social betterment.
liberal always makes me think of butter
Won’t dispute that. Not many of ‘em painted contemporaneously, though! Mostly what 15th century Italians _thought_ things would have looked like. Even used their patrons as models for early saints and stuff.
FunnyD
Alicia, I agree.
I’m a liberal and I’m progressive…but I won’t call myself a progressive. I like the word Liberal.
liberal butter?
I am a progressive
because
I am a patriot and
I believe in the
American value of political progress toward social justice for all.
mostly commercial art; aka ‘commisions’
guns and butter?
yup!, idk why that comes to mind. I don’t even like butter.
FunnyD,
Are you still having troubles? Do you use Firefox?
I got a few of those “unresponsive script” things, and that was even before things changed here.
Betsy, the sandals were something I started to notice at the end of my trip. All of the paintings with all of this fancy footwear. To this day Florence (then a city-state) is the leather capital of Italy and maybe the world. Gucci, Ferrigamo, etc. I think the Florentine artists painted fancier leather goods than Jesus and his crew actually wore.
Anyway, next time, lots of pics. I’m surprised that one of the shoe companies hasn’t picked up on this and replicated these sandals! Here is an example.
Good night all. I’m going to get some sleep.

Suzanne – Thanks for posting the photo links. What a nice looking group you all are :-)
Progressive because what else are you going to do but keep moving forward every day. Progress to the betterment of this here world we’re supposed to be creating and keeping healthy and safe….. and peaceful.
I a little disheartened that women who fought so hard to give me the vote would vote for a woman based on gender only. If only it were any other woman on earth who really fought for equal rights and who was where she is because of her own work, not her husband’s name. I think its a mistake because I see HRC as, at best, someone who wants to continue the status quo. I don’t see her as a progressive at all and I don’t believe voting for her as progress. I honestly believe it is handing the 2008 Presidential election over to the Republicans, either by her losing or by her winning. That’s not progress. I’m sure that’s no surprise to anyone here :-)
my well the snack bar is closing and just when I had an off topic thing to say, but now am safe.

I like to butter my pancakes liberally, but I don’t know whether there is anything progressive about that…
Goodnight.
Hey, Margot. sorry…wandered off to read Glenzilla.
Yes, Firefox. On a PC running XP professional. And I’d get that warning occaisonally, but this has been literally every 20-40 SECONDS.
Anyway…I just updated my Java package. Took maybe 20 mil for the download, installation and verification.
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Fingers crossed. I’m still getting pauses and delays while I’m typing, but so far not interrupted by the unresponsive script warnings. This is a big improvement! We’ll see how it goes tomorrow during FDL “prime time” when the threads are busier.
Hope this helps!
‘K. This time for realzies. G’night Pups!
FunnyD
I like to butter my pancakes liberally, but I don’t know whether there is anything progressive about that…
is this some kind of allegory?
i am making things up like …
… what do we mean by “my pancakes“, anyway?
Well, you wacky progressives, this has been fun but my den is calling this bear’s name, so I’d better hi-bearnate for now….
See you ’round the blog tomorrow. Thanks for another wonderful Sunday.
I will try for funny next weekend, ‘kay?
nite Teddy!
“is this some kind of allegory?
i am making things up like …
… what do we mean by “my pancakes“, anyway?”
I wish I were that creative, ydjim, but I am not, at least not at this hour. I meant it in the most literal of terms.
Good night (two words, not one) for real, this time.
Thanks, great post TSF :-)
Good night, Teddy. Dream progress…
g’nite teddy and hibernate well
Hope you see this later…
Do you have extension (or plugin) called NoScript?
http://noscript.net
It seems to help.
Also, try AdBlock.
*waving to the sleepy leaving pups with wishes for progressive dreams*
Sweet dreams, Teddy… in fact, sweet dreams, all. Off to bed for me!
neurophius, this late the extra meanings come out of the woodwork.
“my pancakes” was comedic and a new one on me.
and i new code word.
“i like her pancakes.”
excellent post, tsf.
happy entendres, dear pupsters
Putin wins, Chavez loses. Bet the world is wondering what will happen here.
ok, pups, time for me to head off to bed. was up way too late last night playing with ya’ll. see ya for late nite tomorrow nite.
I’ll try really hard not to take this personally.
No guarantees, though.
because I have a brain and I know how to use it???
hey burns, how ya been.
Hi Burns!
Progressive dreams, Suz.
Soft tissue dinosaur found.
Now you have to admit that’s progress.
Not my usual time at FDL, but I’m experiencing a little bout of East Coast insomnia.
I’m a progressive because I believe
that we have a responsibility to work together to make the world a better place for those who come after us,
that we have an opportunity today to help those less fortunate than ourselves, and
that we have an obligation to expand our knowledge and understanding.
I’m a progressive because I hope
that what we have in common is more important than our differences.
Arrrgh. This is the rumor that the WaPo turned into a story without ever mentioned the word lies. Gregg Greenwald has analyzed it brilliantly.
burns, i want you to know that i issued the clarification of neo-cons that immediately followed with you in mind (laughing)
g’nite for realsies
And your name is perfect for this thread. So are your thoughts!
I am a progressive because I think like an entitled Republican. Except I am even more entitled. I want to pass on the wealth I have accumulated and that is mine by right to my daughter. The abundance of opportunities to free speech and to the right of assembly, the privilege of knowing there is a rule of law, the many fair elections that I have participated in (not living in Florida, I remember them), the balance of power, the power to impeach the corrupt powerful, everything that is mine by right of …. my constitution.
My name is America, Unites States there of. I am a natural born progressive.
OK I was not always perfect but I knew how to progress to change and did so, and will do again.
Hey, y’all.
Sorry I’ve been in such a crummy mood lately.
Not sure what’s causing it.
Although reading stories like this doesn’t help much.

And the Vatican wonders why so many Catholics feel alienated …
Ok. BlueState turning in. Snow on the car and driveway, first time this year will make for an even busier morning.
Good night all.
I’m progressive because I believe that progress happens, but that we have a responsibiity to assure as much of that progress is positive and commonly shared as is humanly possible. I’m liberal because generosity of spirit and the free sharing of wealth are directly linked to the evolutionary progress of our species.
I hope that we can enjoy what the Venezualans have today:
It shows the level of democratic participation in Venezuela, the ability of the Venezuelan people to vote for and against the reforms, to be calm and accept the result.
So I think it’s a really interesting take on what’s going on in Venezuela in the sense that although the majority of the population voted for Chavez last year, they also have the ability to make up their own minds.
The fact that we see that an effort he proposed has not gone through, I think really is a testament to the amount of democratic processes that are going on in this country.
BBC
I think terms like liberal, progressive, and conservative are relative and have changed considerably. Jefferson was considered a liberal for holding that individual rights were primary and that government should be minimal possible. Hamilton was considered conservative for favoring a strong, active central government. FDR used a strong central government (Hamiltonion) to protect and promote the rights of the individual against strong economic forsees not in existence in agrarian America, i.e., big business.
The Progressive movement was a reform movement at the turn of the 20th century which started with local government weeding out corruption and advanced to national causes like trust busting. Ultimately, reformers of both parties, Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, were considered to be progressives.
For the last 30 years, conservatives have worked to make the word “liberal” a defamatory term. They have continuously associated it with derrogatory concepts haveing to do with overtaxation, squandering money to assist the unworthy, and overbearing government regulating the intricacies of daily lives. Due to their success in this propaganda, liberals have adopted the term “progressive”, to negate the convervative destruction of the word “liberal.”
I personally prefer liberal, but the the key concept is a willingness to use government to “promote the general welfare.” Liberals and progressives favor it, conservatives and reactionaries don’t. One side views the nation as a mutual effort with a goal of improving the lot of all citizens, the other views it as a sort of a social Darwinist preserve progress will occur by the fittest rising to the top.
I appologize for the typos and gramatical errors. I typed too fast and didn’t review.
Good Morning! Your post was excellent.
Agreed! About the only thing that unifies conservatives is a visceral hatred of being taxed and/or regulated. They constantly babble about the miracle of the marketplace and the wisdom of the unseen hand, but at the personal and corporate levels they do everything possible to insulated themselves from the need to compete, i.e., they love to cheat.
Umm, no. Not even close.
What you just described is the crony-capitalism of the extreme Right, not any position that I recognize as conservative.
Conservatives believe in fiscal responsibility. Conservatives believe that markets generally do a better job of allocating resources and providing appropriate incentives for economic behavior than governments, but true conservatives aren’t fetishistic about it. Unlike libertarians, we know a market failure when we see one, and we are willing to evaluate regulatory schemes on their merits.
It is a fallacy to equate the policies of the Republican Party over the last 40 years with conservatism. The Republican Party stands for statism, theocracy, the press as propaganda organ, aggressive war in the service of ill-defined goals, and crony-capitalism. Conservatism stands for none of that. The Republican Party has perverted the term “conservative” beyond recognition.
Go read some Oakeshott, willya?
