There were people in the 60s who successfully avoided the draft by eating hot crossed buns full of speed that exhibited less insane behavior than Chris Shays has of late. His opponent Jim Himes joins us today to talk about "Crazy Shaysie," his run for the only House seat in the northeast that remains in Republican hands, and why "Blackwater" has become a four-letter word.
As a member of the House Oversight Committee, Shays has engaged in a series of what can most charitably be described as politially tone-deaf defenses of Blackwater’s Erik Prince, Lurita Doan and of course Donald Rumsfeld. He has the great misfortune to be going up against one of the Democrats best and brightest, Jim Himes,
This is very netroots-centric campaign — Jim’s campaign manager is none other than long-time blogger http://www.firedoglake.com/2007/10/26/. I’ll also note with pride that the number of contributors to Jim’s campaign last quarter from Blue America outnumbered the total number of contributors to Chris Shays. Which is pretty cool.
Please welcome Jim in the comments.

About Firedoglake
Welcome, Jim!!!
Welcome Jim Himes!
So, Blue America currently has raised $6,630 for Jim, but the number of donors is really, at this stage of the game, at least as important.
Let’s teach Shays a lesson about being responsive to his constituents.
Or, if that’s too difficult for him, early retirement from Congress.
Welcome Jim! Our apologies for things being a little slow for you on Opening Day.
Obvisouly some server problems, but Welcome future Congressman Jim Himes!
Now that former Head of the EPA Whittman has tesified before Congress that the Clean Skies Act of 2003 actually allows more pollution, would you revisit that law?
Welcome, Jim!
Welcome, Jim and Maura! We apologizes for the flies in the ointment but we’re so happy to have you here on the first day of our launch. You guys are our faves. Very appropriate.
Welcome Jim Himes!
It’s great to see you back here – and even better to see you take on Shays and his support for Blackwater.
First, congratulations Jane & co on the new FDL. It looks great.
Hi Jim. Great to see you in the virtual realm again. We’re two weeks away from Pub Quiz Part Deux, our second pub quiz fundraiser for your campaign. Can you talk about what the last pub quiz was like? Are you looking forward to part deux? Any predictions on which team will win this time around?
Hi Jim,
am looking forward to watching the door hit Shays on the way out ;)
Good Afternoon Ms Jane!
Welcome back to the Lake Mr. Himes!
Once I return to the land of gainful employment, I will throw a little cash your way but not able to do so at this time.
I was not a constituent of Shays when I resided in Connecticut in the past (Wallingford and Manchester) but even so, it is disappointing to seem him in action these days.
Is Rosa DeLauro helpful to your campaign. I would hope that she would like to have a fellow Dem abutting her district.
Jim’s having trouble getting in, should be here soon.
What a video! Welcome, Jim Hines. Shays is truly delusional.
Whew! I have been registering for over a half an hour….the hourglass icon is my new bestest friend.
Hi Jim!
Though I am out of your district (Rosa DeLauro turf) I am pleased to see your rolled up sleeves for the Shays Whomping. That guy seems about to blow. I went to one of the town hall style meetings earlier this year and he leapt out of his chair and screamed at me because I had used the word “Occupation” for the friendly assistance project we have engaged in for Iraq.
Thanks, Pach, and congratulations to the FDL community on the launch of your new site. Really happy to be here again, especially on this auspicious day!
I’ll try again. I am wondering if there is a way to make a small donation without that money being spent on mailers to me asking for more money? Being here in Issa country, I have other important work to do as well!
Hi Jim
Not a citizen of the Nutmeg state, but really appreciate you taking on Shays.
Hi Pach, FDLers. Is there a Blue America link for Jim Hines? I’m pretty sure I have used it in the past, and I’ll be happy to do so again today.
~
Welcome Jim! Thanks for running. Hope we can help.
attempt #2:
Welcome, Mr. Himes:
I was thinking about your campaign as I watched, live, Chris Shays drool over the “perfect” Blackwater.
Here’s hoping you can show the “gentleman” the door.
Jane, you seem to be missing something here:
Thunder—
Blue America link
Welcome back, Mr. Himes and big wave to Maura! It’s time I sent another contribution your way. Thanks for wading through the new blog smell with all of us on this wonderful day.
Thanks egregious.
Just practicing my html, what with the new site and all:
Jim Himes at Blue America
P.S. I’m in again, for $100 and 10% tip. ;-)
Jim, are you fully committed to restoring the rights granted by our Constitution and stripped away in the past 7 yrs?
Test
Welcome Mr. Hines. We are again happy to have you in for a chat.
Since the day the Bush Administration began to erode the system of checks and balances with regard to oversight, ignore laws passed by Congress via signing statements and simple arrogance, preemptively prosecute military incursions into non-threatening nations… you get the picture.
I’m looking for candidates for the House of Representatives who are truly appalled by this kind of behavior, and are first and foremost devoted to the restoration of Articles 1, 2 & 3.
Thank you again for coming.
Wow, some snazzy new digs, Jane!
Nice video.
Hi Everybody, I see that Mr. Himes has hit traffic.
Great place.
It’ll take me a little time to figure things out cuz that’s me.
I’m thankful to see advertising, including LLBean. How cool is that?
I tried to get more on the News section – great addition – but the spinning wheel kept going and going.
Just realized I don’t know how to refresh.
Pardon me if I do something stupid.
Hi Jane!
Support page and Pal Pal now working. (Hint to all)
Welcome Jim Himes – and good luck. This is an important one!
Trying to see if I can post. Left an hour ago because I couldn’t get in, even after an trudging thru a ssslllooowww registration procedure.
First let me apologize to Jim Himes: I didn’t realize you were here. Welcome. I’d love to hear more about your plans.
I’m sure we’ll be roaring along soon enough.
OK, I’m in for 50 at act blue, thanks for running, and good luck.
And for those one liners, try:

Wow! got a comment in. Welcome Mr. Jim Hines. I am not in your district but in nearby NYC. I have observed Rep. Shays on C-SPAN on several occassions. He seems to be a nasty piece of work. How did he ever get elected in the first place, yelling at constituents and all that?
Well, as he’s the only dinosaur left in New England, we are all determined to make sure he experiences his deserved fate. And you remember what can happen to CT politcs once FDL sets its efforts to achieve an end!
Off to throw a little dough into the till. The very very best to you.
OK, I’m in for 50 at act blue, thanks for running, and good luck.

Hello candidate Himes;
Ir would be very nice to have new leadership on legislation by forming a progressive congressional group based on those elected with web support.
Looseheadrops has great legislative insite (next hurrah). You could partner these progressive minds that will take us back to constitutional rule of law.
Their are many issues that need legislative attention so would it be possible to work up an agenda from the progressives. Much of the internet is reactive to events when the focus should be more on getting the leg work done to right the ship of state which is sinking fast.
New thread…
Perhaps we could ask Jim back when things are a bit quicker.
Hello everyone and welcome Jim Himes!
(Pretty exciting new site, Jane, it looks terrrific!)
Mr Himes, can you tell us what voters in your district are telling you? What’s the issue uppermost on their minds? What do they bring up, unprompted? Is it the continued occupation of Irak? Our failed health care system? The ever-shakier nature of the Ownership Society?
Thanks very much to you and to your family for the sacrifices involved in running for office. Replacing the odious Shays will be a tremendous accomplishment, and I’m happy to have your fundage thank-you letter on my bulletin board already.
Best of luck to you!
I BEG OF YOU, UP THE FONT SIZE!
I’M SHOUTING SO YOU’LL HEAR ME, I’VE TRIED TO SEND THIS MESSAGE VIA YOUR CONTACT PAGE, WHICH DOESN’T WORK.
