Answer: One minute and fifty-three seconds.
Question: How long after the breaking of the story of the bomb threat at Hillary Clinton’s campaign office before a Freeper wonders if it was staged by her own campaign?
Meanwhile, Michelle Malkin’s commenter says “pray this is real.” According to the logic of Bill O’Reilly, this makes her site a “hate site.”

Speaking of Perino… on Leahy
“If he is now saying that the president wasn’t aware of it, as we have said from the beginning, then I don’t understand why he continues to have this rope-a-dope that’s not going to go anywhere,” Perino told reporters.
She doesn’t understand that Pat is after Rover?
If they find a connection, then what’s the
possibility of a criminal conspiracy indictment
against the White House?
OT, from thinkprogress
Don’t you think it should be required from now on for one non-planted reporter to ask the W Admin official at every news conference to identify which Qs are planted and which are not?
eCAHNomics @ 9
At Bush’s eve-of-war press conference I found it a tip-off when he called on them before they raised their hands.
Bay State Librul @ 8
Rope-a-dope sounds like a good description of what Leahy is trying to do to George Bush, just not in the sense that Perino intended it.
Right wingers are simply nuts.
eCAHNomics @ 9
Leaks and plants and rope-a-dopes?
Bay State Librul @ 8
Dana Peroxide is beyond lame. She had to have been hired for her looks.
Best comment from the Freepers.
I have nothing to add to that.
Freeper wingnuts will definitely find some use for this incident. You can bet your

Wasn’t that a song in the Wizard of Oz?
Notice that only offices of the other Democratic candidates were evacuated by police. Why not the GOP Offices also?
Jeez, I leave for a couple of hours and come back to this. Awful. I pray everyone gets out of this.
Michelle Malkin – what is wrong with her????
They were groomed in their hatred by Karl Rove who actually DID bug his own offices to play a dirty trick on an opponent, so of course they project onto us the way they think.
I’m painting with a broad brush, I know. I hope it ends safely.

Wasn’t she chosen because she was one of the few people that could make Tony Snow look deep?
LS @ 19
I could answer that – how long have you got?
Pectopah @ 18
The GOP candidates are too busy self-destructing. It would be redundant.
LS @ 19
Everything under the sun.
Biodun @ 24
You’re kidding, right??!! Not, what is wrong with “her”….what is “wrong” with her.
Pectopah @ 18
Because is always Democrats that get the terror treatment (assinations, etc.) Although if Ron Paul starts to be a real threat he’ll get the George Wallace treatment.
RonD @ 15
They are freaking out – if this guy is a right winger who visits Malkin’s site on a regular basis – they are screwed!
Fox, interviewing local young man says the name of the HT is Roy Stanley. Has heard stories from friends. HT compains of govt planting things in his head.
Hugh @ 28
lol, good one.
Pectopah @ 18
Great question for reporters. To me it seemed obvious the guy is Republican, but why the police were so sure has to be hammered out.
After, of course, they examine why Hillary Clinton is so calculatedly exploiting the episode.
rope-a-dope (slap Perino)
I hope the White House does send out layoff notices in December. And then I want to know the salary of a person who gets one compared to Halliburton profits in one month.
CNN reporting all hostages freed – perpretrator still inside.
and the media using false claims to judge Senator Clinton’s “handling” of this crisis.
Another msgop pet gooper fatuous failed fbi agent van zandt opined Carter could have made things bad for hostage negotiators –although he went on to say ..nothing happened. Never miss an opportunity to make a false claim about a Democrat.
Hmmmm…I wonder if this terrorist was radicalized on the internet…or by listening to right-wing hate radio.
If this guy wanted publicity, why do this on a friday? Wouldn’t monday carry the story through the week?
Maybe Dana, unwittingly got Leahy’s strategy right….
“Muhammed Ali was facing one of his toughest opponents ever. Grizzled and worn from years of boxing, Ali wondered if his best fight would be good enough to keep his championship belt. This opponent had taken him to the limit before, and Ali decided that something special was needed to give him an edge, something that his opponent would not be prepared for and would likely be unable to counter effectively. Ali decided to employ a strategy he called Rope-a-Dope: just wait at the ringside and position himself defensively, wait for his opponent to tire himself out with ineffective blows, and then finish him off.
This strategy of using an opponent’s own aggresiveness against him was somewhat effective, though certainly anything from being a crowd-pleaser. Amid boos and jeers, Ali managed to avoid enough serious blows to win the bout and maintain his heavyweight title. Not exactly the prettiest bout in world history, certainly nothing for ringside scholars to provide to their students in the way of form, the tactic nonetheless did the job. Although some would question the sportsmanship of such a strategy, there was nothing in the rules against it, and the title stayed with Ali.”
Has Hillary said anything so far in response to this?
Well, I guess this just proves Glen Beck’s point that a woman cannot be President.
‘Course if The Hill were to buckle on some body-armor, snake crawl her way to the storefront and ventilate this this obvious IslamFascist Tehhahist that would go a long way to securing the fat, dumb, white Southron male vote.
Would it not?
I understand Penn is running a poll on what she should do right now.

Could we take a minute to think about this tortured soul? He let his hostages go unharmed, he still has some shred of humanity left, could we worry about him for just a minute?

I wish they had something they could quietly inject into the place to knock him out and then just take him into custody peacefully.
This just goes to show that if Clinton is elected the Republics. will not stand for it. If she wins and doesn’t reverse some of Bush more insane decrees, presidential directive 51, homeland security, etc. they will revolt violently against her personally. All the things Bush got away with will suddenly been seen in a different light by these people (they’ll finally see them for what they are, executive overreach).
This county is about to boil over with racism, misogamy, and homophobia and xenophobia once again. A significant faction of these so called Repbulicans have been brought to the boiling point by mega churches and 20 year of Reich wing AM radio. These people have got the religious zeal and they are all fuckin nuts and there is no way they are going to have a woman as their commander gal in chief. I am absolutely no fan of Hillary’s but the rage directed toward her from the right is insane. It’ll boil over again this is just the first taste of it.

It’s amazing that things like this don’t happen more often given the number of homeless people who need treatment for mental illness. I hope that he will get the help he needs. We might find ourselves in this condition some day.

I have been mostly lurking here, posting once and awhile. I don’t post more often because this site, so far as the responses are concerned, appears to be a stage for trying to be first in line.
I find this behavior puerile and demeaning. I have to scroll through several attempts at being first to get to the meat of the responses, and by the time I do, I mostly leave.
I can see why people call themselves firepups, as this does not constitute adult behavior in my estimation.
The work that Christy, Jane and others do is immensely admirable. I check it first, but avoid for the most part, the responses.
Perhaps that is best.
selise @ 64
My response to this is to look at pectopah’s question @18. The assumption of everyone at the scene was that this was a political threat against a Democrat, possibly more than one Democrat. It may be the case they evacuated Republican operations, too, but I haven’t heard so yet.
It’s not just a random, sick soul. This “nut” was receiving signals, in a manner of speaking: he was obsessed with Clinton. Did that come out of a void? Mentally ill people aren’t more violent than other people, generally. But mentally ill people regularly exposed to “mainstream” Republican paranoia? It bespeaks my prejudice that I bet they are.
As for worrying about the “bomb” — one look at the pictures of Rochester, NH will tell you no chowderhead there is making them.
why in the world would somebody wish this was ‘real.’
what’s in it for her?

BobbyG @ 65
Don’t know if this has been brought up, but there are studies showing a relationship between rapture-nuts (very rigid religious fols) and tendencies towards mental instability. All this is to say is that the choice of Hillary as a subject of this attack (as opposed to Rudy or Romney say) seems linked to the vilification of her by the ueber right wing.

When I see friends or family I haven’t seen in a long time, I spend a bit of time asking how they are, seeing what is happening. Like family, we also sometimes rush to see who can get to the “good” seat first. This is no different. Consider us part of a larger family, and we have various “fun” rituals, that if you don’t like, then just go beyond them. By the time there are a few comments anyway you will have to scroll to see what we are saying. And, dare I say without being unwelcoming- lighten up! Many of us have in our real lives pretty serious professions. This is a fun break – as serious as the issues are!

I wasn’t saying it was one not the other but rather referencing recent studies of this phenomena. Unfortunately, from now on our politics are gunna be defined by fabricated or stage managed “crises”…indeed, post-modern politics, economics and art are gunna have a smooth continuity to them: from one “disaster” to another. This will be true until we re-educate ourselves on politics and economics startin’ with our enlightenment Founding Fathers and then a crash course in Das Capital and The German Manuscripts.
Until we synthesize democracy and our economics we will be headed with increasing speed toward the Dark Ages.
I am not a Mrs. Clinton fan, but so far as I have seen or heard, she has handled this situation with intelligence and and understanding…I hope she doesn’t get done in by a couple of her staff “acolytes” or true believers and I hope we don’t find out that this whole thing was managed by Rupert Murdoch

According to hearsay comments reported on CNN by a “Chelsea Cool,” the perpetrator is not mentally healthy.

What does it tell you that most people, from what I can tell, took the idea this was really a bomb seriously instead of dismissing it out of hand? You’d think we lived in a country where bombmakers are as common as meth labs, or in Gaza or something.

Much of what gets posted in any contemporary threads today does cause consternation beyond what would happen in a face to face or phone conversation. Perhaps at some future time when we regain some of the lost art of writing, meaning may come through much more succinctly that I perceive it to be these days, not only here but other forums as well.
Thank you all for responding.:-)

We get our mail through a P.O. box because of all of the mail boxes being blown to bits and I’m not talking about baseball bats. It’s nuts.
looseheadprop @ 52
Yes. Thanks for the reminder. That level of emotional/psychological distress is truly horrible to endure.
OK, this is a comment to quote next time FDL-ers get branded as haters. ‘cept those doing the branding would say “oh…that’s just someone being sarcastic.”

Mental illness is no laughing matter.

OK, for us newbies, who is/was Leisure Guy?
neokneme @ 151
In late 2004 my bank got bought by a big Wall Street “bad paper” firm. They insisted on a new “growth” strategy that went something like this (in E-Z round numbers to illustrate):
Solicit and book 100,000 new subprime VISA accounts each with a credit line of $1,000. We knew from my portfolio analysis studies that these folks would run the cards all the way up to the line within 5 months or so. That then represents an aggregate “asset” with a nominal face value of 100 million dollars. Bundle it all up and sell it on the Street as a “securitized debt obligation.” Buyers would bid on the anticipated risk-adjusted future value of the “security.”
Take the money (and pocket all those swell fees) and go out and book 100,000 more, etc etc etc etc. Meanwhile the downstream loss risk has been sold to others (who will then sell it to others etc etc).
Pretty much similar thing happened with subbie mortgages. Lotta cats made out great off all that transactional fee money, but the chumps left holding the bad paper when the music stopped are now SOL.
I quit in early 2005. Couldn’t continue abetting what was an obvious rip-off.
Richmond @ 160
not to worry, it gives me the opportunity to point out one of my running themes;
some “rapturists” are “dispensationalists”
George bush is a dispensationalist
these are people that believe Armageddon is a GOOD thing, they believe it means the “rapture” will follow
from the link;
they want Israel in war, they want Israel to prevail and then they think the Jews will come to know Jesus as their savior and the rapture soon to follow
If you look to the events as they have transpired it would seem that they not only want “Israel to prevail against her enemies” but they want Israel to have as many enemies as possible
or something like that, I am no expert on them that is for sure
Albatross @ 178
The correct way to handle small-probability, high-consequence events.
That’s what upset me so much about the anthrax attacks. The CDC didn’t do squat for days & days, *ssholes. It was serious enough as it was; suppose it was even more widespread? That was the first sign of how incompetent W’s govt is.
Albatross @ 178
The police in Rochester, NH can’t dismiss it out of hand, but I sure can.
Starbuck @ 180
That’s why I’m here. Venting helps!
Starbuck @ 180
From what I can tell (as a relative newcomer to the blogosphere) the folks at FDL are intelligent, interesting, funny, sometimes snarky, mostly very civil. From what I’ve seen at a few other blogs, that is not often the case. We feel like family here, and both the informality and the underlying respect are indicative of the community we’ve formed. Your comments are welcome.
Hey – if the coverage of this ordeal pre-empts Tucker, I’m sending the guy a thank-you note.

well Starbuck.
certainly the immediacy of the medium makes for a quick ‘hit’ ..I love it for that reason precisely….but many of the posts here are lengthy and comprehensively thoughtful.
if you focus on those replies you may find kindred spirits you share ideals with-
but in the meantime just fly past the comments you dont jive with—–
just a thought-

Watched To Hell and back on msnbc last night. It was about a pentacostal minister who questioned the bible version of hell. It was quite good. Not what I expected.
I heartily endorse what Starbuck said. It has always been a great mystery to me that such brilliant, incisive writing on the part of contributors here manages to attract the lame dimwitted comments that are such a negative feature of this site.
usa today says all hostages are released
Cafferty reading responses to his Q about Mohammad teddy bear. One said these “yahoos” are the same people who wanted to kill newspaper cartoonists. That, of course, is in contradistinction to U.S. govt that actually does kill reporters.
Starbuck, you’ve wandered into a group of people who’ve been hanging out and talking together for a while. We all know we’re Serious People, and these are Serious Times. If you only drop in on the conversation once in a while, all you hear is our shorthand, our jokes, our jockeying for position. Do you only discuss Serious Subjects with your friends and family? ‘Course not.
But, like any group of good people, we are a welcoming bunch. Hang out with us for a while and you might even want a zed. We love Christy and Jane and each other, too.
Jane has a new thread upstairs!
jane is anew upstairs
good lord, i spent most of the day here online.
after taking the day off work because dang blang it I was just ‘tired.’
but now duty (not ‘active duty’) calls and this baby gets shut down——

Leiaure Guy was a person who showed up one day, told us we were all idiots for hollering “Fitz”, or Frist, or whatever it was at the time, that we should all be ashamed for being so childish, etc. Never heard from him again.
Then someone named Kitt did the same thing, but I’ve seen him/her here a few times since then with good comments (although always *after* the first 6 or 7 comments, when the noise has settled down).
Dan Brisson @ 193
You don’t have to read the comments. Just stick to the front pagers & that should take care of your problem.

Some time ago ( a year or so, I guess) “Leisure Guy” scolded us for the “Fitz” nonsense at the beginning of each thread. I don’t think he ever came back.
A little history: It all started with “Frist” then morphed into “Fitz” and now “Zed” seems to have held on for quite awhile. Personally, I like shouting “Jane!” at the beginning of each thread but now I’l switch to “Starbuck”.
I’m puerile that way.
Dan Brisson @ 193
707!!!
Right. FDL, warts & all, commenters & all, is a self-deprecating Mensa Society relative to all of Wingnuttia.
Take 2 and call me in the morning.
Dan Brisson @ 193
Oh then agony and wasted time of scrolling past 3 or 4 one word comments out of a list of 205. Our time would be better spent complaining about those trivial comments IMO. It’ll be the downfall of the progressive movement i tell ya.
mc @ 203
LOL, mc!
BobbyG @ 184
And now we watch it all unravel…
Starbuck @ 206
Damn, you can take a joke. Now I’m gonna have to go back to “Leisure Guy!”
Happy Friday, Starbuck. It’s beer o’clock here on the East Coast.

Rochester is not that small. It is a city by NH standards. It is right off I-95 and about 45 minutes to Boston’s Logan airport, and close to other NH towns like Nashua, Rye, Hampton, Seabrook (think Nuclear Plant). It is a gateway to the state. Despite its small size, NH is hard to get around. Great North/South highways, but virually impossible to go West-East. So it makes sense to have field offices.
neokneme @ 207
What makes the subbie mortgage thing even worse than what we were doing is that, whereas the bid value (and projected longer term value) of the bundled revolving credit accounts we securitized was a function of our astute proprietary risk modeling, subbie mortgage vetting became “you got a pulse? fine, here’s your loan.”
Churn & burn to the max. Everyone just assumed that real estate values could only go up.
mc @ 208
2 1/2 hours to go!!
Got some really good, even organic microbrews here, and a place that makes the best Moscow Mules evah!

I am very glad no one was hurt, but is it just me or does this remind anyone of the anthrax attacks right before the passage of the Patriot Act in Oct. 2001?
We have the S 1959 “Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007″ waiting in committee and it just passed the House 404 to 6.
And the guy being interviewed said that this guy (he was “told”) was into “conspiracy theories and such”.

Today in Portsmouth, New Hampshire as I waited for new tires to be installed on my car two of the other people waiting for tires expressed those sentiments. They both thought that Hillary was the instigator! I was shocked.
We all know now how Michelle Malkin spent her afternoon. Deleting hateful comments from her Hilary/bomb scare/hostage thread. Ha, ha.
eCAHNomics @ 33
See, this wouldn’t have happened if he wore his tin-foil hat, like he was supposed to.
Didn’t somebody send him the memo?
Poor guy. He’s probably very disturbed and will end up spending the rest of his days watching Michele Malkin on t.v. while he spends his days in a mental hospital. Somehow I don’t see that helping his condition.
