It seems incomprehensible that we debuted here on the firedoglake.com website only a little over a year and a half ago. So much has happened since then…it seems more like several lifetimes.
We have had some amazing times on this site. Thank you to everyone who has worked on the site, who has been a member of our community, to those who have shared the good days and the better days (there were no bad ones). You’re all rock stars to us.
On behalf of the entire FDL community we thank you for having been there. We close out this era of our lives with quite a bit of nostalgia.
We’ll be seeing you tomorrow on the other side.

The Other Side?
Hi Jane.
JANE!
You must be referring to tomorrow’s surprise. You’re such a tease! So what time should we be here in the morning?
I know there’s supposed to be a surprise, but this is sounding rather ominous…
What are ya saying Jane??? *g*
Qué? WTF?
fitz?
This is not going to be a good weekend.
Jane!
Huh??? Are we all dying tonight? Seeing “the other side” in the morning?
???
Other side?
Only a year and a half ago? Then I’ve been here the entire time, although I used my real name at first…
Jane, this is something huge. You drive me crazy!!!
OldCoastie @ 6
i’m feeling more like christmas eve night having to wait for the morning to get my surprise
Whatever new and grand thing is coming tomorrow, I hope it goes smoothly… I get all paranoid when my I can’t get my FDL!!
((((((Jane))))))
Thank you for a terrific, ground-breaking year and a half so far. You continue to lead the field, and the Lake just gets better and better.
Bravo!
Huh? Making us nervous!
Jane, you’re not giving up your site, are you?
A year and half? No, I feel like I’ve been here for evah. In the good way, y’know.
What a cliffhanger Jane!
not onomous at all – and jane is not going anywhere and ya’ll will understand ‘the other side’ tomorrow morning
patience, grasshoppers
So sad.
gg
Suzanne @ 13
yeah but you have a clue!
;-)
whoa
OK sports fans,
I’m having a hard enough time sleeping these days. WTF? This has me worried.
newtonusr @ 24
I don’t think we are supposed to be sweating it…
Petro, I’m aghast! You’re Back! (((Petro))) *g*
Suzanne @ 20
What time tomorrow morning?
What time tomorrow? I’m on the west coast, do I need to set an alarm or something? Ha, like I ever get up without an alarm!
Seriously, I want to be here when the present gets opened.
wangdangdoodle @ 28
Yea.
OldCoastie @ 26
Ummm, a little assurance from Jane would be nice… *g*
Suzanne @ 20
Worth a repeat.
CTuttle @ 27
*sniff* I was beginning to think you’d forgotten me *sniff* … *g*
how many of ya asked what time santa was coming when you were kids?
Suzanne @ 20
Log on, log off.
HiiiiiYAH!
Suzanne @ 34
*raises hand*
Petrocelli @ 33
I truly hope your problems have been resolved… 8-)
Suzanne @ 34
A fine time to go all “Mom” on us.
egregious @ 36
and what were you told, eg?
g’luck jane, see you on the bright side.
wangdangdoodle @ 38
Heh, Seniority counts for something… ;-)
Huh? I’m getting a headache….first, TRex (and he says its a good thing), and now the bosslady being enigmatic. Christmas is nice, but I wouldn’t want to find out I’m moving on Christmas morning.
CTuttle @ 41
Well hell, I got that!
CTuttle @ 37
I’ll e- mail ya on FB.
Mom!!!! Mom!!!! What’s in the box Mom!!! I promise I won’t tell the other kids. Please mom!!
wangdangdoodle @ 43
I won’t go there… (ducking) ;-)
*crossing arms across bazooms and giving tex the look*
Hey Mom, why were you making out with that fat guy in the suit … does Dad know ?!! *g*
Shadowstalker @ 42
Jane said it was a surprise, not an arrow through the heart. I hope it’s a ferret.
i too have a generalized WTF sensation at first blush of Our Lady Jane’s “Goodbye” above.
will our brave commenters enlighten me?
have they decoded this nuance?
have we just been shown the door?
what up?
i must go now to read the comments.
i read slowly.
I was told the sooner I went to sleep, the sooner it would be morning and then there would be presents.
It was not the answer my 5 year old self wanted then, and my inner child isn’t happy with it now.
*grumble, grumble*
Fine. But I’m telling ya, this patience thing is way overrated.
Petrocelli @ 48
pet, you still hoping for those two front teeth?
Suzanne @ 47
Tex! …the recipient of that? Ooohhh…
Suzanne @ 52
yeth ma’am … *g*
yellowdog jim @ 50
We’re still a’waiting… 8-(
Suzanne @ 39
“Santa isn’t going to come while you’re awake, kids, so go to sleep”
is it time yet?
and if you go right to sleep, you may hear Kobe barking in your dreams….

C’mon people, change is always good even if it’s not always apparent at first …
firedoglakeferret
nobody turns into a pumpkin, do they?
Now I know why TRex bailed out..Jane sold FDL to Time Warner or Fox.
Petrocelli @ 60
Change is certainly constant.
Petrocelli @ 60
First, TRex, then…???
Mommybrain @ 49
lol
OldCoastie @ 62
Only if you host MTP … *g*
hint from david neiwert yesterday afternoon?
been wondering what it meant…
plus… emptywheel has been hinting that something’s up with her blogging, and that we should hear about it this weekend.
coinkydink?
Steve-AR @ 63
Heh, Faux Spew and Murdoch… ;-)
bonkers @ 64
… it is the only constant …
Petrocelli @ 67
Hey, that’s just the head. The rest of him poofs to a cock-a-roach…
This li’l grasshopper calls it male-created cattle paddies, whatever it is. There are ways, and ways, y’know? This wasn’t a way.
Petrocelli @ 48
Let me be the very first to wish you a Merry Crispmas.
now, Kobe’s darling, but I’ve got the 2 best dogs in the world here… yesterday the winds were blowing and the gate at OldMother’s house blew open… the pups were visiting that day but OldMother had gone to run some errands (OldBrother drove her)…. they were out and about for 3 hours…
now, most dogs would run far and fast, but these 2 goofballs, best as I can tell, took a little tour of the cul de sac, visited all the other dogs behind fences and then got thirsty or tired and went back to OldMother’s for a drink and a nap… came out and gave a little skippy greeting though when OldBrother and OldMother drove up into the driveway…
whew.
CTuttle @ 55
alas, we get to survive on Suzanne’s assurances that the world will not end, and that Jane bears glad tidings of great joy …
with which we shall be tormented until dawn.
does this suck?
no.
i’m with Jane.
Anticipation is 99% of the pleasure of every joy.
although, surprises make wicked anticipations.
i can go wait in the treehouse till the sun rises.
selise @ 68
Ultimate partnership?? Jane, Christy, Marcy…
newtonusr @ 71
LOL !!!
You got lucky with the doggies, old coastie!
Jane, yer such a tease.
;)
And now, off to find those sugar plums…
Loo Hoo. @ 72
Hiya Loo Hoo, how ah ya ?
FDL welcomes our new ombudsman, Debbie Howell!
Ho-ho-ho.
-GSD
Loo Hoo. @ 75
hey… i have no idea if the dots connect or not. just thought i should throw the dots out there, and see if anyone else had anything to add.
jane can’t expect us not to wonder…. especially after the last “good news” was trex leaving. this time i’m hoping for something i’d call “good” too.
yellowdog jim @ 74
Sigh, that’s where all the cool kids are hanging at now…
GSD @ 80
SPEW!
selise @ 68
And didn’t Jane mention something yesterday about supposing to meet Kagro X somewhere, but she didn’t make it? Hmmm…
Doing well, Petrocelli. Did you see that a Canadian judge said we were welcome there because our government condones torture?
Sorry, guys, I know I’m a pessimist/skeptic/worrywart, but I didn’t get to be 47 by brimming over with trust for my fellow humans. I will try to be more….positive.
*crickets*
*crickets*
Is tomorrow over yet?
Now SEE, this is when all the FireDogs get together!!!
…. just brainstorming here… but i wouldn’t be surprised if the site goes down for a while sometime tonight. just in case that’s so, meet you at the treehouse for the duration (if i’m awake).
Reading this thread sorta reminds me of one of Ms. ET’s stories. She taught 5th grade for 30 years. When some of her fungelical students would get lax, slough off in work, or space out on assignments, all it would take would be for her to say “We don’t want to be left behind, do we?” for her to get them back on track…
Jane Hamsher!
Shadowstalker @ 86
you just need some tinkerbell dust sprinkled on ya to make ya more … positive
So now I must sit and hit refresh until morning?
I’m not gonna get any work done tonight…
Loo Hoo. @ 77
they’re pretty smart and the old one is wise (and teaching the puppy)
i have a love/hate relationship with puzzles. i love to figure them out and hate it when i can’t.
selise @ 89
Treehouse link?
;)
Suzanne @ 34
My parents used to make us all line up in the hall upstairs until things were “ready” downstairs. Of course, we would whip ourselves into a frenzy. Then of course we had to line up, youngest first, oldest last, under the assumption that the older ones would show enough restraint not to trample the young’uns under foot when the door at the bottom of the stairs was finally opened.
Oh, Jane, you’re such a tease!
Bob in HI
Smgumby @ 91
is there a 12step program for the refresh button?
Suz@90
Tinkerbell dust? Is that what they’re calling it these days?
*grin* But it must be legal, or you wouldn’t be suggesting it.
For the anxious folks around here, here’s a little Roy Orbison to help you relax.
(youtube)
You’re getting very sleeeeeeeppyyyy….
OldCoastie and LooHoo, are you being mudslid or drowned tonight? It’s raining all of Atlanta’s rain here today.
A 12-step program for the refresh button…
I don’t think so…
Hell of a week to quit smoking…
Is this a ‘Who Shot JR?’ cliff-hanger…?

selise @ 81
Thanks ever so much for those delicious dots.
i was starving.
really, having my confusion suspended for more than one thread actually helps relieve my anxieties about this: thank you, selise
Loo Hoo. @ 86
Didja see our Supreme Court say that our Gov’t cannot deny Habeas Corpus even to suspected terrorists ?
Think we could get Clarence and the boys up here to refresh their F*cking heads about laws that are the foundation of a Democracy ?

Oh! This has been *such* a good week! And now we get to evolve! How good can it get, right?
See y’all in the morning.
selise @ 93
Amen, Selise…!
Mommybrain @ 99
we’re fine right here, but it is sliding in Modjeska Canyon… rivers of mud on the roads…
got the dogs out individually for a quick walk each for 20 minutes tonight, but it is pouring again.
CTuttle from PDX, by any chance?
Sadly the kook in NH didn’t storm into a Tancredo office.
Because there would have been no one there to take hostage.

Jane (nyc) @ 109
BJU? Is that something like Morehead(MN)State?
Mommybrain @ 99
Hey, girlio! I don’t have to worry about mudslides where I am, and I’m so happy for the rain. I hope there are no landslides, but it could sure happen. We’ve been getting a slow steady rain. So wonderful!
yellowdog jim @ 105 –
i think we’d be nuts not to feel some anxiety… given trex’s recent departure and the weird (i think) way it was done.
but, if that hadn’t happened, i think we’d (or at least i would) be feeling more happy anticipation.
GSD @ 81
hehe…I had suggested earlier tonight that ‘lil Debbie would be answering our questions in the comments. Someone brought up the idea of TeddySanFran grilling her. Now that would be the definition of dismantling. A pleasant thought to go to sleep with…

Don’t know anything about the MN school but Bob Jones U is “over the top” conservative by any evangelical, conservative standard.
A scary, creepy place…even for South Carolina.
That is such a poignant song.
I’ll have to offer up one in turn:
Turn, turn, turn
We had a small landslide on the highway this morning, cleaned up quick.

Or was that Suzanne?
Petrocelli @ 106
No. . . Link, please?

I’m having visions of a merger with several smaller blogs as divisions of FDL. Wonder if C&L will have anything to do with this.
Christy sure knew the right time to take some time off to avoid the confusion that change invariably brings. OTOH, I would feel more comfortable about this if she were safely ensconced in her usual Cuppa in the AM. I’m beginning to feel abandoned.
Did I ever say how much I like TPM? But I usually hung out here because it was more of a smaller, somehow more intimate community. I can’t seem to get comfortable with Huffpo; too many roughnecks there. Kos is just a bit too confusing. They’re a nice place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there. Hope that’s not what’s about to happen here, too. Guess we’ll see, so until tomorrow, goodnight all.
Starbuck @ 130
No Problemo! Where are you from?
Mommybrain @ 137
I noticed a lot of rocks rolling off your mountains this evening on the news…
Starbuck @ 131
Starbuck in Santa Fe perhaps?
So, is Al Gore going to be here in the morning to announce he is running for president on the FDL Party label?
Margot @ 136
Hi Margot, good one!
The wingers have Hot Air, we’ll have Fresh Air.

My mind was lurking in the gutter on that one:BJ-U and More-head St. There was a comedienne from Mn who did a routine about cheerleaders a MSU. Funny!
Felix Moronia @ 118
Felix, you funny!
And all those good little abstinent fundie undergrads would be horrified by that thought!
But seriously…I wouldn’t wish whooping cough on anybody. If you haven’t had a tetanus shot in the last 10 years or more, you may want to consider getting the new T-DaP. Tetanus/Diptheria/Pertussis (w. cough). Sounds like Diptheria’s making a comeback, too.
Gotta say, it was a little weird being not-quite-40 and getting the equivalent of an early childhood vaccine. Better than getting sick, though.

Good bye to you too, Jane. It was a pleasure being together on this side.
I got it! The George Soros check finally came!
I’m guessing the surprise is more video like Crooks and Liars has, and Donita Sparks could select music to play that goes with each post.
I’m guessing that were going to get a lot more posting from smaller blogs by somehow selecting the best posts and bringing them here.
Quality instead of the Quanity of the Huff Post.
Maybe we commentors will get a huff post I’m a fan of this person thing and we can read all of each others stuff. Or do it one better and also read what other people have said about a person’s comments if their name is mentioned in the comment.
But most importantly of all I hope we get smiley faces:)
I hope one of my guesses is right.
bonkers @ 157
Yeah!
Jane,
I sense that you’re getting too much pleasure from freaking us out like this. Can’t we have a hint?
bonkers @ 157
hope not. i’ve got some serious reservations about some of the “open society” stuff his org has been doing.
bonkers @ 158
Merry Christmas!!!
Hi Wangdang!
I could use some cheery songs right about now. I hate surprises.
selise @ 121
That’s how I’m feeling about it. We’ve already had one sudden late-nite goodbye this week, and it didn’t make many of us commentators turn joyful handsprings or frisk about like spring lambs.
Sigh.
Maybe there will be a place in the new Lake order for a well-moderated forum that will keep the flavor of the FDL commentator community. Or maybe the whole thing will be as well moderated, just with lots more smart, nice people in the comment threads.
FunnyD
What I really want to know is, has Kos given his approval to all this whatever it is?
selise @ 121
i guess what i really don’t like about it is
THIS is exactly the way my folks treated us as kids:
like mushrooms.
feed poop and keep ‘em in the dark.
i take it all back:
surprises ruin the anticipation and leave just the dread.
neurophius @ 163
And a Happy entire New Year, to you too… ;-)
Margot @ 164
Did you catch my Christmas music link earlier?
Well, if this is it, and that’s that, and maybe we’ll be back and maybe we won’t but if we are you’ll find out about it later…
The chocolate ice cream is on me.
Goodnight, FDL
;>)
is it time yet now?
Bonne chance Jane and all of you at FDL !
G’nite all … I have to reintroduce myself to my bed …
darkblack @ 170
I knew better. But that didn’t stop me.
Many FDL commentators, especially Late Niters, have taken great pleasure in being the first to comment on a new thread…the chase for the mythical Zed.
In light of the fact that the whole universe is about to change into something unknown, I propose a new twist to the game:
Let’s see who can make the last comment!!!
selise @ 68
Thank you, Selise. That’s comforting.
wangdangdoodle @ 172

Funnydiva2002 @ 164
i think that is my concern.
i came for the front page posting, but stayed because of you-all.
seriously, if i had to choose between the community of commenter and everything else. you-all would be my choice. i hope nothing will undermine the ease with which we carry on conversations and enjoy meeting and working with each other (thank you mods!!!).
Maybe Time will scrap their political blog and sponser us. Time will report the straight news then Jane and company will discuss, explain, and try to educate people about the news.
You know all the things Joe Klein refuses or can’t do because all he took was stenography classes at the Judy Miller school of reporting.
this is all very appropriate when you consider that Mercury will move into the sign of Sagitarius at 4:21 AM Pacific time on Saturday probably about the time Jane gets up, makes us all muffins and espresso in little cups, and we sit in the frozen garden in our woolies and sip.
Seriously, this transit of mercury into Sagitarius will be a sea change…from water to fire – much more interesting.
Mentally, we will be on fire for most of the month.
neurophius @ 174
A race to the bottom…? ;-)
well as long as the “new” FDL doesn’t ban insouciant banter and unsolicited word tinkering, it’s all good…
spiderpaws @ 178
hey spiderpaws… a sea of change – perhaps one that leads to impeachment?
Last?
Actually, the time to aim for may be 11:59:59 p.m. Pacific time.
This should keep us busy until it is time to open the box.
wangdangdoodle @ 173
F*ck, so did I… :P
selise @ 162
Wow. That what’s so cool about this whole blog phenomenon. That’s some in-depth and thoughtful stuff there.
A great example of connecting some dots but not making accusations (hope it’s not the case). Maybe it’s pure speculation, but at least people are doing the heavylifting, and others can help if they want, and hopefully we’ll all get closer to the truth. Thanks for sharing.

And I don’t think this means what people are saying it means.
As I understand – until now Canada would not accept as refugees individuals who came into the country via a safe third country. This ruling means that the court no longer considers the US to be a safe third country. And there is some appeal/review thing in process, and I think this is a ruling by the Federal appeal court, not yet the Supreme Court of Canada. So there is a way to go here.
But still very interesting.
And IANAL, so your mileage may differ.
Starbuck @ 192
Not to mention the Mr. Starbuck from Pirates of Penzance
What is going on? I just got here. Does Jane mean FDL is over?

Didn’t he make his first appearance in Moby Dick?
marymccurnin @ 209
Awhile back, Jane put out the call for programmers to send in resumes. I’m going with the site remodel theory.
hi mary.
spiderpaws,
comet 17p/Holmes exploded on october 24th (i think).
it went from a magnitude 14, faint, 2 mile wide ball of comet material as it approached perigee with the sun when is expanded to about the size of Jupiter in like 48 hours, increasing at 0.5 kilometers per second.
comet holmes went from invisible to naked-eye viewable, as bright as the stars of the Big Dipper, practically overnight.
I think this all happened/continues happening in Perseus.
aside from how three wise men handled this sort of event, what astrological significance should we ascribe to this appearance in the zodiac?
Thanks, Fern.
marymccurnin @ 209
no, just changes in the works…
neurophius @ 211

no jokers, huh?
hey, Who stacked these cards?
Funny how attached you can be to people you have never seen. And then you meet a few of those people and it gets even better.
I was thinking about how important Late Night with the dinosaur is/was to me. It was a great relief to be able to throw off the worry and be full on snar-kay.
Fern @ 237
As it was first presented, deserters were allowed to emigrate… Followed on by Parliament scolding the US for state-sponsored torture… All which is ammo for the Hague, I might add…
I’m a newcomer but even I’m nervous.
Like getting a new rug pulled away. (or off, depending on where the rug is!)
The Hague. That notion cools my brain a bit.

Hmmmmmm. That could be interesting. Perhaps multiple concurrent threads, but more of an intimate sense of community than say Dkos. Perhaps also something with more of a video component — the five-minute video commentaries that Marcy, Jane, and Christy did during the Libby trial were the most coherent, intelligent reporting I’ve ever seen.
Starbuck @ 245
I peaked in at work today. I gathered you’re the new “zed’.

Lots of pups over at the treehouse.

Hmmm. I need to look into this.
Now I need to try (again) to get to sleep – need to be up way too early – in about 4 or so hours. Gonna be a long day.

Commentary is the strong suit here… I recall the notion of “institutional memory” as a raison d’etre. With a stronger search component for views as well as news — we could start seeing the forest of understanding through the trees of thought. The meme-forest so to speak. Just my own bias though…
punaise @ 269
i am drawing a total blank. 10 minutes after logging off for the nite, i will have come up with at least 3 good responses to that pun.
Fern @ 236
That’s what I was afraid of. Thanks for answering that.
Yanno, I thought some of the comments at that link were more revealing than the article itself. From the anti-refugee/immigrant tenor of many of them, I’m not sure I’d have known this was happening in Canada if the national identifiers had been left out. Does that make sense?
Shorter me: O, Canada, some of your people sound a lot like Americans…

Teddy had some tooth stuff done the other day. He hurts. Sorry Teddy.

Funny that most of us have never met, and yet, one powerful way we show our minds and hearts is through words. Doesn’t matter if those words are pixels on a screen. My mind and heart sense the person behind the words. Imperfectly at times, to be sure! But I feel connected to all of you. And that connection is a huge blessing to me.

Well, Morning will soon break so until later, in whatever form this takes, or not, or….
i think the most important component here at late nite is the community building. in many way, ya’ll are like family to me. community is what keeps the lake grounded and growing at the same time. community is having meetups for face to face time with the face behind the fonts. community is figuring out how to get katymine’s folks down to az from oregon (if needed) and discovering we could do it with our very own underlake railway. community is holding demi’s hand when her dad passed and congratulating cassie when she got her driver’s license.
i came for the front page. i stay for the community.
I agree 100% with ya, Funny D! No place like the Lake, the tree house is commodious too…

There is a total flatness to the so-called desktop. The possibilities for 2.5D renderings are vastly unexplored except in the game world. Videos are another foray into the potential for a bigger picture but they require alot of “production” and once in the can, well, they’re just canned. It is conceivable that a way to view thought can be rendered visually with iconic forms representing the memes under examination.
My hope is that we’ll get to experience a new dimension in memetics soon.

What FDL has become, especially in the Late Night posts, is one of those virtual reality sims, like “Second Life”. We have a place (The Lake), we are a people (Firepups), we have elements of our own vocabulary, if not language (e.g., “EPU”), we perform virtual actions, like
* Suzanne’s dives (although she hasn’t been doing that as much any more);
* Suzanne as Mod glaring at people and threatening to cuff them;
* Firepups would warn each other to beware getting thwacked by the Therapod’s tail
* TexBetsy’s evening desserts,
* we listen to music and watch videos together, and
*although she hasn’t done it lately, TexBetsy and others used to ask for a towel when she was ready to leave the Lake for the evening — and someone would give her one!
And besides Late Night, first thing on Saturday mornings we get to Pull Up a Chair, and look at some lovely pastoral scene Christy posted for us to focus on,
And we’ve exchanged recipes,
And of course the biggest gathering of all, our virtual gathering at Prettyman Court House to witness the trial of Scooter Libby, aided by the fast-flying fingers of Marcy providing the play-by-play, Pach providing the color commentary, Christy providing the in depth analysis, and Jane doing the daily wrap-ups with other members of the team on politics.tv, making us all feel like We Were There!
We’ve been doing it all without “Second Life” software–only our own vivid imaginations. . . hmm. I wonder…

Well, we Hawai`i people will have the shortest wait. I went to TRex’s site. Elegant, fun, cool. I have Jane and Christie tied up emotionally in my heart with my baby sister’s cancer and feel a little nervous but don’t want to batchi anything. I am glad and proud that Hawai`i has a progressive history legislatively but not so much in implementation. Pat Buchanan is talking about the inevitability of Romney. WTF!?! I was rambling and fishing with speculation that Teddy Roosevelt was involved somehow, and trying to connect dots with the Philippines and their revolt against Spain, which happened about the same time. Roosevelt was intensely interested in Naval history, and his attitude towards the Native peoples of the Pacific plus his own military interests made a potent brew– in fact, I think he went to the Philippines. but this is all just wild-assed speculation on my part.

Ah, good to know I wasn’t just being dense that late at night. I look forward to learning more soon, by reading the book CT recommended. I’d go to wiki, but it says the objectivity of the article is disputed. Which means I don’t know enough to sort out what’s factual and what’s blather and, therefore, reading it won’t be very informative.

I have to confess. I’m a Luddite. I had this iMac sit on my desk for over a year like a beautiful piece of sculpture before I began to use it. Same with the internet. Frankly, I didn’t connect with Daily Kos because I couldn’t get the id and commentating shit.
It was only when I happened onto firedoglake during the Plame affair that I really was able to read and respond to the material. Believe me, it was a spiritual and political awakening. I thank Jane, Christy, and Marcy for bringing me to a cyber-political awareness. They are my heroines.
Wherever they want to go, I will follow (not like a liberal sheep, but as an interested and involved reader). They tell me things I don’t necessarily know and they help me act on my own thoughts and feelings.
No matter what, bless Jane and Christy and all of Firedoglake. This is the absolute best cyber community that I have ever come across.

we passed 500?!
CTuttle @ 494
POI-fect. (poi, get it?!!). If you hadn’t steered me right, I’d probably have gone poking around at UH.
Heh. Now I’m remembering my few, coupla degrees removed connections to HI.
3rd grade. Learned about poi and tapa cloth and other HI things. Learned the hookilau (sp) song and with some other girls made up a dance and gave a little presentation. Dang. Haven’t thought of that in YEARS.
College. One of my very very favoritest profs ever got his PhD in chemistry from UH. You could see him for miles at commencement in that lime green and navy blue regalia…

TexBetsy @ 506
Yep! They’ve got to do something!
holy cow. i think i found rbg’s first fdl comment.
Interest anyone in a slice of cranberry/almond/cinnamon tart?
New recipe I tried yesterday after having to special order a jar of cranberry preserves required from a place in MA.
Maybe a little sweet for breakfast but passing fair, if I do say so myself. *g*
HUGE comment thread tonight!
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 501
Oh, (((((grrrlll))))), I know what you mean. Straight up. The personal life is making it hard just to interact with the rest of the world in a normal way. Like I’m missing half the layers of my skin or something. Hang in and think of me when it helps to know you’re not alone!
FunnyD
selise @ 509
Now that’s a find!

Heh, he produced my first comment yesterday! Mahalo Nui Loa, Selise…

(((ndfg))) before she left, christy said egregious would do pull up a chair this morning. That is something special to anticipate.
sorry I made the handbasket comment, that was uncalled for.
radlib1 – ditto
ndfg – you got 500!!!
Waccamaw @ 510
Mmmmf. Fang’oo. gulp.
No such thing as too sweet for breakfast in my universe. Cranberries? Almonds? Cinnamon? Sign me up, sounds like breakfast to me!
What makes the preserves so special? Seems like a good time of year to get the fresh ones and try to duplicate.
FunnyD
Dang, Selise, the first rays must be poking above the horizon by now…?
thanks funnyD. the care & compassion is one of the things i love about the lake.
Didn’t jump in earlier because i’m kinda weepy & out of it. I’ve mentioned several times over the last month that one of my geriatric (but beloved) cats has a fast-growing cancer. Well, looks like its down to days now, and i’ll have to have him killed when the tumor starts to suffocate him. Everyone’s been so compassionate, but i didn’t want to derail the thread earlier. We get so attatched to those darn furballs.
yum! cranberry/almond/cinnamon tart! Thanks, Waccamaw. Sounds like the perfect thing to have with coffee for breakfast.
A bright spot in my life at the moment is that it is christmas cookie baking time! My favorite part of the holidays.
CTuttle @ 516
not quite yet…got another hour or so to go. :)
and silly me, still hoping to get some sleep tonight.
Maybe *ilson will come back to the new place. I miss more than any other disaparacado…

“The man who devised the Bush administration’s Iraq troop surge has urged the US to consider sending elite troops to Pakistan to seize its nuclear weapons if the country descends into chaos.”

Ooh, what a plan…
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 518
Yes. We do get very attached to the furry nutballs. I’m sorry this is such a hard time. Some kinds of killing are more compassionate than standing by and allowing a “natural” death–as is obviously the case with mr. kitty. A roommate and I lost a 4yo neutered tom to kidney failure. That last few days was especially bad.
Sorry. Maybe you didn’t want to be comforted in this way. But I like to believe that the tears and sadness and pain are an indication of how very loved your boy is. So try to go easy on yourself. His own unique furry self and what he added to your life are worth mourning.

Seems so funny to see it in that format now.

Here ya go….extra large slice since we both have a sweet tooth!
Now that I see contents on jar and consistency, no reason not to give it a try…need to check my cooking library or the toobz to see if there’s any hints for a running start recipe. I buy lots of cberries this time of year to freeze.
ndfg -
Yup, getting ready to grind a few beans.
Am *so* sorry to hear your furry child will need to leave you…had to do the same with my OES in January and there’s still a hole in my heart. But it’s an act of kindness and love to help them not be in pain.
CTuttle @ 525
Oh, dang. He’s certainly not been as active as late, and I thought I’d heard he wasn’t around much. I could be wrong.

As I understand it, Pakistan’s military is on very good terms with the U.S. military. Their generals all went to war college in the U.S. with our generals, or somthing like that.
The guys to watch out for are their intelligence service, the ISI. They are militant Islamists who had a lot to do with establishing the Taliban, so I’m told.
Or in my boy’s case, worth his Tuna and Greenies.
Don’t know what life would have been like had he not made it clear that I was going to be his new mom. Not going to speculate…
Waccamaw, slim set might be a good option if you don’t want to over-sugar, and freezer jam would put up faster and easier than jars and paraffin. But you probably know more about jam than I do. Nice to run into another cranberry lover. Can you believe some folks really, really hate them in all manifestations? Sad, but more for us.

Nite, ET, I know it’s 1AM in your Time Zone!
No matter what happens, firedoglake is and has been the best cyber community that I have ever experienced. I’m not often a commentator because I come home from work too late, but I always read the comments (and am often amazed by their intelligent responses).
Firedoglake may indeed be able to improve its outreach, but, to me, it’s now still the best website on the internet. Not only for its politics, but for the humanity and caring of its readers. That can’t be touched.

3) MSM Poll Report: Journal Inquirer: “Poll Finds Lamont Would Win If Election Were Held Now” (09/15/07) “Greenwich Democrat Ned Lamont would handily defeat U.S. Sen. Joseph I Lieberman if their 2006 race were re-run today, according to a new poll.”

I get mine brom B&B out of Olympia here is western CO. Also good stuff.
When I was young, my favorite books involved time travel.
through the back of a closet
the third level of Penn Station
Magic by the Lake
FDL has caught me
as a traveler by the written word
through time
space
and even more,
with company.
It is that experience, of having company as I mentally travel and face evil foes and work for a better world, that I do not want to lose.
Let’s hope…
That last comment was total gibberish. I’m in western CO. and get my beans at a local drive-by which, in turn gets the beans from B&B.
B&B just opened a new coffeehouse here in Olympia. They were my favorite until I was corrupted recently.
(B&B roasts 5 miles away from me. If yer in town I recommend their tasting room!)
Just in case you come to town!
I get my coffee from the source. When I travel to Ethiopia I buy unlabeled green coffee beans. (in the Kaffa region). My neighbor has a roaster. Some batches turn out blah, but some are just amazing.
So, whose gonna go for 600?
You
Just read an article at watchingamerica.com that is somewhat alarming about the U.S. 5th Fleet in the up-coming war with Iran!

I was in the Seattle area a month ago and my favorite is Espresso Vivace on Capitol Hill. They only roast espresso beans. And only two roasts at that. One roast for shots and one for latte’s. Mmmm!
glad I clicked on the link at “it’s only been a little over a year and a half”…
Got me thinking (real slowly at this time of the mornin’)… hell, *I’ve* been here longer than that! That was the intro to WordPress. From a Christy post some time back, I realized that I got here about a month after she did…
My pension benefits are building up quite nicely.
Felix Moronia @ 602
Thanks for sharing that. I knew that the military was worried about such a scenario, and it made sense but I didn’t know about how well that likelihood had been substantiated.
Thanks for telling me. It was 599 until I reloaded – spooky..

Good morning pups!

They’re such nice people.
It’s the most gorgeous cherry and orange colored dawn.
A new day!
good morning! I think…
I better read all the comments
The first snow of the year should start pretty soon here. 29 degrees and the clouds are a gatherin.
I love a fresh snow for my morning commute!
Here’s a little breakfast music for you guys:

Good morning, pups. It’s TOMC and Bob Herbert today. TOMC is taking a jaundiced look at Rudy. She says, rightly so, that Rudy Giuliani is one of those people who doesn’t handle power well. The more important he becomes, the more impossible he becomes. Mr. Herbert addresses the Republicans’ “Rambo” problem. He says in the Republican presidential debates, the candidates seem so eager to flex their muscles and talk of violence and mayhem as the solution to our nation’s ills.

The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got chocolate croissants as a treat. (There are also some plain ones for the non-chocoholics.) I wonder what “the other side” has in store for us… Have a great day.
rats-I have to leave shortly and I won’t know the surprise till tomorrow most likely. grumble, grumble. Whatever it is, I am so grateful to Jane and Christy and every single thinking of you/us that has been here. onward and upward!!!
hugs to all~and gratitude galore
Jayt — I had neighbors like that once. I tried politely asking them to turn the volume on their music down several times, to absolutely no avail. After I serenaded them with bagpipes at prodigious volume for 2 hours they got the idea and stopped. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire… (I happen to love bagpipes, but lots of people think they sound like a cat in a blender.)
Chocolate croissants?!?!

I’m looking forward to see what Jane and the gang have in store for us.
2008 is going to be a big year for progressives!
Marion in Savannah @ 622
I want to see Marion playing the the bagpipes, any video of that?
Selise at 470 and Punaise at 363 –
GrandmaJ checking in. I usually check in very very early when I can’t sleep, and with the news I first read I said — out loud — what the [blankety blank] is Jane up to now. But now have to stick around to see.
I am usually in lurking mode, but check in here first every day. Sad to lose TRex but know where to find him.
Waving to everyone I know. I missed a MN pup party I planned to go to – life being rather crazy these days – but I keep moving forward, because backwards is a disasterous path to follow – as Bush and his lackeys have proved once and for all.
Rob Zuber @ 628
it will be either a big year for progressives or for corporatists
our dems are rolling over and I am already believing they’ve been corrupted by “contributions”
I’m off to work in a few minutes, but seeing this post first thing this morning has unsettled me.
“Turn, Turn, Turn” helped, thanks to Margot@136.
More shall be revealed, and I guess I’ll see y’all on the other side too.
perris @ 626
Feels wrong. I am guessing a “larger” blogsite with a wider variety of posts/authors. Sort of like KOS but hopefully more homey like the lake? Does that make sense?
Don’t some server thingamabobs start melting down with this many comments?
You would think bluejeans, but it is holding in there so far.

Marion in Savannah @ 636
I still want to see a video of you playing the bagpipes!! ;)
What the heck? The other side of what? the toobz? Is FDL becoming a wingnut site?
The other side
you know, I saw jane on a few interviews recently
she was incredible, she has really matured as a spolesperson…her points were consise, her answers were “ballanced” she was obviously beutiful and inteligent, well spoken and insightufull
big differance then the first time I saw her on progressive tv
at any rate, when I saw her most recent appearance I was thinking cnn would be out of their minds if they didn’t scoop her up, giving her a greater audience and a bigger voice
I kind of don’t think the lake could be moved to a differant blog, I think it’s got most of it’s power right here.
all speculation.

I’ve seen *ilson a few times lately – just this week, actually, at the grocery store.

jayt, thanks very much for the update. A few of the old timers may remember him as “Wilson zipcode.” Sorry to hear about Congresswoman Carson. I am happy to hear that Wilson (and his baby pit bulls I hope, I believe he breeds them) are doing well.
I’m thinking these comments are gonna hit 1000 before we find anything out
everyone is probably waking up right about now, ready to take a look at their firedoglake jones bing
then they have to sort through 700 comments to make sure the answer isn’t burried in the thread somewhere and then they’ll comment
might even reach 1500

Maybe it’s a switch to a monster server that will handle the anticipated increase in traffic as the election nears?
funny…a year ago next month I bought myself a birthday present, picked up a little mid life sport scar
I remember telling everyone here at the lake in some obscure comment of mine
the point is, a year ago it seemed like I’d been coming here all my life
now I find out the lake has only been running a year and a half
it is hard to believe how much has happened because of this blog, it is mind boggling that a blog can be this powerful in such a short period of time
…and may the next year and a half be even more productive and successful.
thank you, jane, you are an inspiration to us all. you and christy and all of the writers, posters, lurkers and guests have made a very positive and productive impact on the public discourse.
