Bernard B. Kerik, who was Mr. Giuliani’s police commissioner when some of the charges were billed, said in an interview yesterday that the security detail’s travel expenses would normally come out of the Police Department’s budget.
“There would be no need for anyone to conceal his detail’s travel expenses,” said Mr. Kerik, who was indicted earlier this month on unrelated federal tax fraud and corruption charges. “And I think It’s ridiculous for anyone to suggest that the mayor or his staff attempted to do so.”
You know even Rudy had to wince at that one.

Jane!
*wince!*
poor Rudy!
Okay who’s ready for tomorrow?
(many surprises in store…)
Dean is addressing the DNC meeting in Vienna, Va. right now on Cspan2…
OOoooohhh, that Man Love picture!!!!
If Rudy was more smart than loyal to his thugs, he’d just shut Kerik up.
I’m ready!
Jane Hamsher @ 5
Ooh! I luv surprises!
Jane Hamsher @ 5
So DO tell…
Jane Hamsher @ 5
I’m gonna need a hint!
Did you see what LS posted last thread?
The letter the comptroller sent to Bloomberg along with itemization.
I just love it when Howard Dean says: We can do better than that in America, and we will.
Isn;’t it amazing that Kerik who didn’t do college and maybe didn’t finish high school for all we know was NYC police commissioner and was nominated by Dom Roodi to W to be the FatherLand Uber Master?
These thugs are amazing, ha? Chutzpah…
This could get funner and funner.
eCAHNomics @ 11
It’s just not as much fun if you sneak open the packages in advance and then have to pretend you’re surprised on Christmas morning.
Learned that the hard way.
Jane, did you figure out who sent the flowers?
You’d think that somebody in the Rudy camp would muzzle this weirdo Kerik. This latest outburst from Bernie just ties him closer around the ex-mayor’s throat. And this guy (Rudy) is the GOP front runner?
You know even Rudy had to wince at that one.
Good king wince is lost, looked out on the feast of Stephen,
Dollar bills lay round about, green and crisp and even…
Loo Hoo. @ 17
Haven’t had time to call, working on the *surprise*.
Is his real name Rudolph? Now there’s a real war on Christmas.
I sent them. (in my wildest dreams!)
They came from the Lake!
Commenter over on Salon.com nailed the Rude-E / wingnut Sex-On-The-City retort MO:
IGNORE — No. 1: No explanation whatsoever.
DENY — No. 2: “It’s not true.”
BLAME — No. 3: It’s a “hit job.”
BELITTLE — No. 4: Everybody does it like this.
REFRAME — No. 5: Whatever it was, it wasn’t a coverup.
INVOKE 9/11 — No. 6: We were helping the cops.
Jane Hamsher @ 16
My sister was known to unwrap presents, wrap them back such that they looked undisturbed, then tell our mom that whatever she was getting didn’t fit.
Jane Hamsher @ 16
I already know.
Saw it on Facebook.
Can you tell us what time to expect the surprise?
SanderO @ 15
Rove spent how many years in college without graduating? And Bush brags about being a C student. Low potential-low achiever.
Jane Hamsher @ 16
Oooooh! They’re that kind of surprise, then!
I can be ready, if you’ll tell me what time so I can get up extra early on the right (correct, non-grumpy) side of the bed and get my best, happy shiny party behavior all revved up.

Oh, and thanks for posting this, Jane.

The soft bigotry of low expectations must be the explanation.

There may also be some soft expectations of low bigotry…
Ahem. Methinks the non-grumpy side of the bed is the left side, not the right side. Get with the program.

Bwhahaha… The new ‘improved’ version… ;-)

Jane Hamsher is a nom-de-plume for Marilyn Manson. This is so last week.

Maybe it’s a pony.
Here’s a two part comment. I used to do more of them but haven’t for a while.
For those of you who know me from what I write here, you know I am a big critic of Bill Keller the Executive Editor of the New York Times. He gave a long speech about the Times and his journalistic vision in London on November 29, 2007. The full text is here.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/medi…..italmedia1
with hat tip to Froomkin who excerpted it today. Here are my favorite quotes. I think it goes far in elucidating the congratulatory, deluded pseudo-journalism that has come to characterize the Times along with the rest of the MSM.
(So apparently the Times toadying up to the Bush Administration wasn’t the problem. The problem was the blogosphere mistakenly blaming thinking they were toadying when they were.)
(What Keller doesn’t explain is why the Times held on to the story about a blatantly illegal program for that year. Honorable people have a problem with that, Bill.)
(Note with whom blogs are associated. I’m surprised Keller left out pedophiles and serial killers.)
(This has even gone so far to result in some closed minded bloggers to question the god-like sagacity of the Times itself.)
(Two words: Michael Gordon)
(FirePonyLake?)
Eli @ 54
whoops, you’re so right.
Eli, I think you’re just rotten, and I’ve got some nasty trash right here to prove it.

Loo Hoo. @ 50
Or Debbie Howell will be here taking questions in comments.
And then we have Dr. Condi Rice, Phd. Her expertise has someting to do with Russia I believe. Well. We are leasing Russian helicopters for use in Iraq and elsewhere. So perhaps we should not sell Republican power-person, high power education all that short. I would most certainly feel obliged to rate the Sectetary of State at least GOP dull-normal.
Funnydiva2002 @ 61
That’s more like it.
Mommybrain @ 56

Do you think Teddy would wake up extra-early, or just drink lots of coffee tonight? I think the latter would be a lot more fun.

Loo Hoo. @ 50
It would certainly be a surprise to KO.
The DNC speeches sound very D to me. You gotta be one to love it.
At 10, I’m switching to Numb3rs.
Part II
(Aside from slamming wikipedia, you know because it is democratically created, the main thing Keller forgot to include here was the pajamas we wear as we are hunched over our keyboards.)
(Of course, above Keller was slamming blogs. Oh and one of the reasons blogs riff on the news is to unriff or at least point out the spin that the Times and Keller put on it.)
(I suppose it is nice to have standards. Now if the Times would only follow them.)
(Can you say Judy Miller (who left) or Micheal Gordon (who still writes egregious suck up pieces on Iraq for the Times)? Again what Keller isn’t saying is how long it took the Times to get around to write a mea culpa which curiously never really took responsibility for foisting a stupid, costly, and murderous war upon us.)
(It is to laugh. Most of the Times anonymous sources aren’t whistleblowers but Administration officials engaged in covering their ass or sticking a knife in someone’s back.)
(Keller, in fact, promotes a pro-war agenda and it has perfected the art of writing in White House talking points and with a balance that usually includes 5 Republican views with (possibly) one Democratic response tacked on at the end.)
(Yes, we do and no, you don’t.)
Hugh, have you started a list on the Fourth Estate’s digressions…
“My own paper’s most serious run-in with President Bush, as I’m sure you all know, concerned our disclosure in 2005 that the National Security Agency was eavesdropping on the phone calls and e-mails of Americans without the nicety of a legal warrant. We held this story for more than a year, and listened to fierce appeals from a galaxy of officials, including a sobering admonition from the president himself”
Impeach them too… ;-)
Horsewoman @ 63
That is just awesome!
Hugh,
I won’t buy the times anymore. Used to read it at breakfast every morning.
It’s nothing more than a paper devoted to the upper class and caters to their needs… food, dining, real estate, expensive baubles and entertainment that no one can afford. It’s for the property class who make lots and don’t want to pay taxes and rather give it to a lawyer for a tax shelter than the same to the IRS.
Their reporters are lousy.. Michael Gordon… Buemiller… Judy Miller… Really .. what a bunch of liars.
Screw the Times.
I read Krugman and Rich online… and occasionally Bob Herbert.
They are gonna fold.
Mommybrain @ 56
I thought that was what was behind Hastert’s retirement?
“The truth is, people crave more than raw information. What they crave, and need, is independent judgment, someone they can trust to vouch for the information, dig behind it, and make sense of it.”
Cause we are all just fools out here in Americaland eating our Burger Kings over the Times and using our sleeves to wipe our faces.
SanderO @ 77
Paul Krugman ROCKS!
Holy buckets, Hugh, that Keller sure has an interesting perspective on hear no evil, see no evil, print no evil.
Who us? Give the keys to the outrageous adolescent with the chip on his shoulder…and the beer hat with the sippin’ tube as well?
It’s not our fault we’re pathetic *Judy Miller* *Jason Blair* *moi* outside the parameters of Krugman, Herbert and Rich. Wanker “Bill” Keller–and yes, I am thinkin’ the first wikipedia definition….
Hugh & others.
Let’s gang up on NYT like we do on Congress. We could send them (public@nytimes.com) tons of email when they do something egregious (not taking anyone’s name in vain). Or congrats when they do something good.
I’ve been doing that on my own, but there’s strength in numbers.
And we can do it in our pajamas.
We need some good pix of repub lawmakers in drag or panties at a dominatrix party. The bible thumper ones.
BobbyG @ 36
Now I don’t feel so grouchy for skipping out on a tree lighting ceremony this evening. The choir kept ruining carols, which I tolerated right up until they started a crazy loud jumped up jazzy version of Silent Night. And the last time I peeked was age 6; it was the baton I wanted (lesson learned / hanging head in shame).
cathy @ 78
Did you mean Trent Lott? I know Haster’s in financial scandal trouble, but didn’t thinl there was sex involved. (Assuming the Foley thing has lost it’s zing.)
I used to write the times every week.. maybe 2x… never got a letter published and I even spell checked them.
Screw them. Ignore them and they will go away.
They be bought by Ruppert.

My lady has just placed a fresh lime in front of me between the keyboard and screen. This has substantial meaning. It is a none to subtle suggestion that I make a couple of large shaved ice Margaritas. And I don’t use mix. And it usually means it’s getting close to movie time also.
SanderO @ 83
We don’t have any of those yet?

One year I was in an office building that overlooked the Rock Center tree. I watched the lighting from the 37th floor. Literally, if you blinked you missed it. Could never figure out why anyone bothered.
I walked by last year during the day when they were decorating it. Now that’s a sight. Massive scafolding. 8 guy wires to nearby builings 8 or 9 stories up. After watching for about 15 minutes, I asked a worker if that was any kind of job for a grown man. He gave me a great big grin.

Keep tryin’ man. I tjhink you have to put a title after your name. Like Professor Emiritus SomethingOrOther.
But I posted links the other day about how my teeny local paper had an article an an Iraqi leader thanking Iran for their help — help!!! — in making security better. Total opposite of what we’re hearing from WH. It was buried in the Times. I couldn’t believe it. My local paper prints foreign policy articles if they fit and only so much as fits. I swear, you’ll be reading an article and it just ends. Just another piss ant in the Chicago tribune Empire. But they got it right and the Times ignored it. I thought that was huge news. I never thought I’d say it but, in my view, the gray lady blows.
SanderO @ 113
Did Jane give us a time on that? Is it in the a.m.?

Eli – had not been to your website before. Enjoyed the photos a great deal – especially the thingy with the four bolts and one of the getty lily pond.
Aw, thanks, Fern!
I just got an even better camera, and it’s getting a workout tomorrow.
bradblog has the unhappy news…
seems that there were a total of FIVE (count ‘em – 5) CA initiative petitions for splitting the electoral college vote filed with the Sec. of State… the original one that was withdrawn a couple days ago and then there are four more…
this is some kind of multi-headed hydra…. 2 of them, 07-0048 and 0049 have exactly the same author and were filed the same date.
I was aware of 2 of them (the original and 07-0032)… but then there is one more – exact same language, filed a week after 48 and 49(07-0052) and by different authors than 48 and 49…. it is very confusing, I know…
what kind of fuckery is this?
I apologize for getting us all excited.

egregious @ 159
yea, 5…. what I don’t understand is how could that work? it would seem to me (and what the hell do I know?) that each petition would have to meet the 400 and some odd thousand signature theshold… what would be the purpose in having 5 of ‘em if you have to restart the signature gathering process for each?
OldCoastie @ 157
The main issue that needs to be resolved is the signatures obtained under any/all said petitions will not/can not be amalgamated… 8-(
CT – I don’t think they can use one set of signatures gathered on any one petition and apply them to another… and why 2 petitions, exactly the same and by the same author and filed on the same day?
something is very stinky here…
OldCoastie @ 166
My point exactly…! ;-)
Should have known they wouldn’t give up that easily…
CTuttle @ 162
guess I’m going to get on the phone to the Sec of State office on Monday… I just don’t get it…
Smgumby @ 168
I didn’t expect ‘em to give up easy, but I figured the “2nd” initiative filing was insurance if the original failed… I looked at the Sec of State’s webpage until my eyes bled, but I never saw that there were 3 more of them way down the page… good trick, and having the language identical certainly didn’t hurt.
OldCoastie @ 170
A most excellent plan of attack! *g*
*disclaimer* I’m not a Lawyer…! ;-)
OldCoastie @ 166
Is there some sort of deadline for filing these things?
OldCoastie @ 164
I checked a couple of rubber banded clipboards this week, but they were for parent permission for abortions. Nothing else mixed in.
I’m wondering if they got signatures for the petition online?
Fern @ 173
OC, what’s the deadline for June?
Fern @ 173
yup – 150 days to gather the signatures and must be turned in 131 days prior to the election… very, very specific.

Do we know whether Eisenberg is a Jew? If so, priest abuse seems unlikely.
OldCoastie @ 182
Auwe’ as we say here in the Isles, ‘No Can!’ runs a close second in popularity… ;-)
eCAHNomics @ 196
Unusual situation.
In September 2002, a Leeland Eli Eisenberg, formerly known as Ralph E. Woodward, Jr., residing in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, filed suit against Boston Archbishop Bernard Cardinal Law. The suit alleged that around 1982-1983, Father Richard Buntel, a priest at St. Catherine’s church in Westford, Massachusetts, would take Eisenberg to the rectory of the church, offer him alcoholic beverages, bring out pornographic material, and sexually molest him.
Is that why he has a mental illness now?
Yes, Loo Hoo, I read that, but that doesn’t answer my Q. Is he a Jew or not? If he was known as Woodward, is that his rel name, or is Eisenberg. The latter doesn’t have to be Jewish, but prbability is high that it is.
eCAHNomics @ 200
Maybe he became Jewish because he was afraid to stay Catholic.
Eli @ 156

Good hypothesis. But the fact is, we need to know a lot more about this poor man before we can begin to understand his actions. These fragmentary reports seem to lead to anticipatory unwarranted speculations.
eCAHNomics @ 205
yeap, we don’t have the type of information that would be needed.

The suit alleged that around 1982-1983, Father Richard Buntel, a priest at St. Catherine’s church in Westford, Massachusetts, would take Eisenberg to the rectory of the church, offer him alcoholic beverages, bring out pornographic material, and sexually molest him.
if jesus died in the electric chair churches would have electric chairs affixed to their steeples
anyone know the famous painting by Magritte of the ‘pipe’ with the words (in French)
this is not a pipe painted underneath?
imagine the word celibacy above a priest with a hard-on for boys
1983 is only 24 years ago.
OldCoastie @ 182
Absolutely not!
Every single step we make, no matter how small it may seem in the long run, is critically important to swinging the pendulum back. Rest assured you threw a major cog in their machine, that made them expend many dollars and hours, which they do not have now for nefarious activities later. That’s a major accomplishment.
And didn’t you and cohorts learn a lot through this? Think about all the motivation you’ve inspired throughout the blogosphere.
Chalk all this up to an important victory, which hopefully you’ll build upon as you continue to fight these slimeballs, and know we’ve always got your back. Thanks!

If so, why would he take his step father’s name after he was already in his 20s? At the time of the alledged priest assualt, Eisenberg/Woodward would have been in his early 20s. Seems old enough to look after himself. With the infor we now have, seems more likely that priest story part of his mental disease.
is schwartzenagger secretly in cahoots with these people?
oh thanks oprah for fawning over this pile of steroidized flesh when he ran for governer
are we having late night today?
eCAHNomics @ 210
I agree – way to soon to speculate.
late nite is just running a little late is all cassie
Fern @ 213
Actually, the more I think about the sexual abuse story, the more annoyed I get that it was even reported, until more info is available. Seems irresponsible.
okay out on a limb with this but hey:
confusion about identity etc…
part of the game.
it’s all a game.
we just dont know who’s playing it or why.
or the purpose.
priests only have the power to molest now.
they dont have the power to summon, interrogate, torture, and murder.
what a loss of status.
eCAHNomics @ 215
brought to us by the media to be the bright shiny distraction
Hah. Huffington Post hits the mainstream. (And that is NOT a compliment.) Always anticipated it would happen sooner or later.
Old Coastie is showing us all a powerful lesson in “ever vigilant” and what taking responsibility for one’s own democracy means. You go, Old Coastie!
And let’s all honor this effort by looking around our own communities and making sure we’re ever vigilant, also.
Hey, ECAHN, good on ya. Person’d almost think I’m on the Edwards campaign team, but I’m just a voice from the Prairie liking what I’m seeing and wanting to evangelize [in a good way!] for the man this country needs in the Oval Office.
And ReneND, saw your shout-out away back. I’m snug in my Eddie Bauer flannels, red with little pine trees and skaters…gotta keep up standards in the pajamas….
eCAHNomics @ 215
It does indeed.
When speaking of Rudy Giuliani, it’s important to remember, you can’t say “Character” without “Kerik”!
(Yes I stole that from a caller to Stephanie Miller)
eCAHNomics @ 219
Ever thought about the Hillary info put out there? There’s a serious hate thing going on. Usually headlines fit the stories, but not when they’re about Hillary.
Suzanne @ 218
He filed a suit so there are court documents wrt to the abuse allegations, not just speculation…

How soon before John Gotti Jr. has kind words for the Rudester?
-GSD
P.S. I hear the title of Bernie Keriks’ book will be “2 Girls, 1 Cop”.
The real story is that our country doesn’t treat people with mental health problems and there is such a big stigma people don’t ask for help. And many of the ones that do can’t get it.
Dru @ 224
isn’t it speculation to tie that with today’s actions? who released the info about the abuse and the lawsuits? why are we talking about his past instead of what happened today?
You’re welcome, Prarie Sunshine. I like Edwards, and that took some convincing, since I’m allergic to pretty boys with southern accents.
msmolly @ 202
Weird. I’ll pass it along to my WordPress guru.
Suzanne @ 214
Sacrifice the lamb of the flock…?
Loo Hoo. @ 223
It’s starting to look like a tabloid.
Suzanne @ 227
yes,
don’t know,
“we” wouldn’t be if he had been Muslim; he would be a “dead terrorist, killed by a valiant sniper”
BTW, if you read the Wapoo link, they are also reporting that there is a Leeland Eisenberg who served time for rape.
i agree, dru, about the outcome being different – and that is a sad admission i make.
shrub orders he domestic piece of the anti-terror budget slashed.. by half
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22046131/
I guess he needs the money to fight his discretionary wars, as opposed to the “War on Terror”… just how cynical is he?
Blub @ 234
he needs to spend it on mental health care and child abuse survivor counseling and health care in general!
boosh doesn’t care about safe ports, or working to keep regular american’s safe – just his buddy’s wallets full
Suzanne @ 236
Disaster capitalism. He DOES care, but about unsafe homeland. The more terrorism, the more bucks they make.
eCAHNomics @ 237
yeap (spitting on the forkers)
cassie got the zed! cassie got the zed!
http://www.firedoglake.com/200…..d-friends/
Suz, it’s far more than that. We’ve got a war criminal on our hands, and people in congress too chickenshit to do anything about it.
I shouldn’t be surprised since 85% of all people I know are not too forward thinking. (aka brownnosers)

“Did you hear me, babe? They want you on the Letterman Show.”
