And then there’s this:
During the November 28 CNN special Campaign Killers: Why Do Negative Ads Work?, CNN anchor Campbell Brown said: “General David Petraeus made his reputation taking on insurgents in Iraq. But when he came to Capitol Hill in September, he was confronted by American insurgents, a liberal anti-war group called MoveOn.org.”
Brown also asserted that a MoveOn.org advertisement headlined “General Petraeus or General Betray Us?” “became a huge news story because it questioned the loyalty of a wartime commander, implying he was a traitor.”
I group such wingnut blather that issues forth from reporters into two categories: (1) things they say because they’re just repeating what conventional wisdom is in their circles, and (2) bullshit they know to be untrue but don’t defy because that’s the price of membership to the club.
Nobody thought this was a “huge news story” until Karl Rove and other GOP operatives sat down with their little speed dialers and began pressing journalists to “care” about it. So Mrs. Dan Senor is either out of the loop and indulging in (1), or just passing on horseshit because she doesn’t want to blow her membership card in (2).
I’m guessing (2).
Just as a side note — for folks who wonder to themselves, “what would Joe Klein say?” — Klein was one of the first journalists to start screeching about MoveOn.
Not that the GOP considers him an easy mark or anything.

Hey, Jane!
JANE!!!
Funnydiva!
Mods:
That was weird, I didn’t mean to double-post!
FunnyD
I need to pick a movie to see this weekend and I am sadly out of the loop. I don’t even know what’s out there.
Jane Hamsher @ 4
omigod, omigod, Jane knows I exist!
I’ll never wash my monitor again!!!
FunnyD
Jane Hamsher @ 6
If you haven’t seen The Edukators see that. Or are you talking about a movie movie, out at the cinema and all?
Jane Hamsher @ 6
Crap comedy
Crap romance
or Crap action.
Pick yer poison.
I heard the Coen Brothers most recent is very good – No Country for Old Men. Just recently rewatched Blood Simple. Terrific film.
Campbell “Just the soup ma’am” Brown is just a prettier Joke Line.
Jane Hamsher @ 6
My mom took my kids (2.5 & 5) to see Mr. Magorium. They loved it.
Maybe you could try that.
Wingnut Media: should be forced to spend the rest of their lives writing Hallmark greeting cards.
Jane Hamsher @ 6
Lions for Lambs is worth seeing.
The Goopers are still delusionally looking for ‘victory’ in Iraq.
And CNN never bothered to point out Campfollower’s conflict. I wonder if Mrs. Dan and Howie Annis-Kurtz sit together in the CNN section for gooper spouses.
Heh, I was just perusing C&L’s turkey tale…
Bbbbut – they said it was all boring and filled with ideas and stuff.
Ok, seriously…
So, now it’s an act of war/rebellion to oppose the war, and to focus that opposition on one of its highest-level managers and proponents?
I might have to add 3) can’t think their way out of a shallow ditch, but love to read their prose in print, so won’t stop blathering. But that leaves out an obvious motivation behind that–smearing political opponents at all costs.
Feh.
FunnyDiva
Jane, I heard ‘Bella’ was good – it’s going around the art house cinema circuit.
Jane Hamsher @ 6
I liked American Gangster (H/T Perris). Also heard inerviews of The Savages & Protagonist today. Both sounded interesting.

Jane, If you are looking for a DVD to rent, I thought that Waitress was funny. You have to watch it assuming that Hollywood won’t touch the abortion issue, but if you understand that, the lines are great. Sometimes you just have to watch something mindless IMO.
carolyn urban @ 18
yeah, who wants to see people just talking to each other anyway?
Jane, of course you could rent Fever Pitch, just in case you haven’t seen it.
carolyn urban @ 8
movie movie
So how should power couples act? Is transparency (i.e., identify your connection) sufficient?
semi-guilty pleasure at the cinema:
Across the Universe, set to Beatles songs.
Your mileage may definitely vary, reviews are very mixed, but…
You forgot:
(3) things they say because they are too chickenshit to admit they’ve been wrong all along.
Yeah, what kind of whack job likes a film where there aren’t car crashes and exciting stuff like that?
Speaking of people just talking, reminds me of that great little film My Dinner with Andre – don’t believe it’s out on DVD but could be wrong. Worth tracking down. A gem.
carolyn urban @ 10
Of the current crop, No Country for Old Men, hands down.
Bardem’s delivery of the line, “Call it, Friend-o” haunted me for a week.
Jane, check out “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.” It is getting great reviews ~ book was wonderful; haven’t seen the film, but based on having read the book and some reviews I respect, I’d highly recommend at least considering it.
FunnyDiva, I know how you feel; Jane “almost” a few years ago, brought her infamous amazing poodles to romp on my property as an I-5 break back in the days of her living North of me in Oregon…..Jane, been quite the changes since then; all for the best and for reasons. Amazing what you’ve done here ~ thank you for all, and for the outstanding people your energy has attracted.
He’s terrific. Did you see him in The Sea Inside? Incredibly moving.
Dan Senor and Campbell Brown are available for shared speaking engagements (you need to scroll down in the link to find them).
http://www.gtnspeakers.com/allspeakers.php
Questions for the blogger ethics panel: Does it compound Campbell’s existing conflict that she presumably gets a nice fee for her team speaking engagements with her husband?
carolyn urban @ 32
Damn, he’s good on screen. Love in the Time of Cholera also coming up soon, or is it already out?
For a movie recommendation, I suggest “City of God”. It is a Brazilian movie (meaning subtitles). However, it is such a great story.
What the MoveOn.org questioned was not Petraeus’ patriotism but his judgment and honesty. This had something to do with his lying. Stenographers like Brown can’t be bothered to check the facts. The White House spin is all that counts. Like so many reporters nowadays, if she could not speak in White House talking points, she would be mute.
Here by the way is the text of the MoveOn ad. You decide.
Horsewoman:
Heh.
What kind of horses and horse games do you play?
I just hang around my local SCA-dian equestrians mostly.
FunnyD
dannyM @ 35
Still in movie theaters? It’s quite a few years old. Interesting, but very depressing.
Been meaning to see that for years.
Horsewoman @ 30
Somebody else recommended that. I hear it’s good.
Am I a cretin for wanting to see “beowulf?”
Re: Petreaus/Betray Us. My army major efriend tells me the latter has been his nickname in the army for quite some time. Apparently the rank & file don’t look up to him quite the way W does. Geez, it took me about 2 weeks to go from zero to solid grasp of counterinsurgency. It took army 4 years to write a manual, and very few are trained in it. Then it was Petreaus to who gave away all those U.S. weapons to insurgents. Plenty not to respect there.
“City of God”
Loved it! Watched it several times.
Note to country dwelling self..must join netflix.
Jane Hamsher @ 40
From what I read Beowulf is tremendously violent & only noddingly related to the classic.
Jane Hamsher @ 40
Really not. My daughter (24 yr. old doc. student) saw it because the Coen Bros. film was sold out & she loved it.
eCAHNomics @ 43
But live-capture Anjelina Jolie is HAWT!
FunnyD
Hey FunnyD ~ just hang here on our 5 1/2 acres with my 2 QH’s and 5 cats … play with cows occasionally; love the “getting into their equine psychies (sp?)” stuff … people mess em’ up a lot and then blame the “animal”. I’m the one people come to and go “this horse is SUCH a pill” – and I have to break it to them that it isn’t the horse :-)
One needs a sense of feel when working with horses; one of the the reasons I like it around here ~ everybody has a “feel” ~ for what is really wrong with this country.
Jane Hamsher @ 39
Hairspray is out on DVD.
Yes, that qualifies you as cretin.
Nah. Actually I want to see The Mist. Not usually big on Steven King films, but I read that novella years ago while camping, and it creeped me out completely.
Actually, while reading that story with my back against a picnic table, deep in Maine woods, totally hairraised from tentacles and huge – well, no spoilers here – a darn bold red squirrel was foraging on the table and put his paws on my shoulder and I screamed bloody murder and me and the book and the squirrel all went flying.
carolyn urban @ 47
King’s books don’t usually translate well to the screen, but I read that The Mist is good. I loved the book. Also really liked My Dinner With Andre.
Brad Pitt did Troy. Angelina Jolie did Beowulf. Who knew we were witnessing the creation of a family of classical actors?
Horsewoman I’m jealous. There’s a beautiful little quarter horse for sale down the road that I’ve been rubbernecking for a year. He’s just been on his own out to grass for the last year – and he’s young and green. And while I have a barn and the land, I’m not horse ready here and can’t afford to board him out. Gnashing my teeth though. He’s a feisty guy, a sweety though.
first dissent = pro-terrorist. now dissent = insurgency?
how can campbell brown continue to function? if i had to say something like that to keep my job, i’d want to curl up into a little ball and go catatonic. that or punch somebody’s lights out (wouldn’t do it – but that doesn’t mean i don’t feel the urge sometimes).
Cool. Though I gotta say my friend’s soon-to-be-former gelding (new home) is a good candidate for actual, honest-to-badness, horse pill-dom. Give him any shadow of a glimpse of owner behavior he can parley into a horsie hissy fit, and he’ll do it.
Hope his new owners can give him the kind of constant work he needs.
FunnyD
Horsewoman @ 46
Hey jane and all Pups everywhere! Thought I’d pass this off topic but big, big breaking news along. A Canadian Federal Court judge has ruled that, “The United States is not a safe country for refugees, the Federal Court said Thursday as it ruled that Canada will no longer have the right to turn back asylum seekers at the border.
In the surprise judgment, the court found that Safe Third Country Agreement breaches the rights of asylum seekers under the United Nation Refugee Convention or the Convention Against Torture.”
That’s excerpted from an article at CTV .ca. The judge cited the treatment of Maher Arar as a primary example. There should be some wingnut heads exploding on both sides of the border on this one. I was totally gobsmacked as I read the article. I can’t imagine how George or our own dumpy con-loaf, Steve Harper, will spin this. Cheers!
Hugh @ 50
SPEW!
Dayam, right now I’m multitasking, with three significant Female voices, Jane, Rachel, and, Naomi…
1) Naomi Klein has a new post at Huffpo… Here’s a snippet: “Guns Beat Green: The Market Has Spoken”
“Got that? If you are looking for a sure bet in a new growth market, sell solar, buy surveillance; forget wind, buy weapons.”
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..74869.html
2) Listening to Rachel on AA online…
And,
3) reading Jane… *g*
Holy crap.
Dang, KO doesn’t seem to fit in… ;-)
carolyn urban @ 50
Horses have a profound ability to buy you…watch out!!…..
eCAHNomics @ 20
Michael Clayton is very good (and good politics). Enchanted is sweet/funny. THe Coen brothers new one “No Country for Old Men” is terrific but quite violent. Have fun!
Heh, ‘Sex on the City’ KO’s take on Ghouli’s shag trips… ;-)
Just got back from backing up the son from school, so I’m way behind….
JANE!
Watch Copying Beethoven.
Ed Harris as the B.
Really good.
(I mean, if you’re still here and reading.)
about a month ago i saw Jekyll on showcase.
it was fan freaking-tastic. i highly, highly recommend it.
i’m going to get myself the video for christmas.
Sorry,
Meant Picking up my son.
Copying Beethoven.
Ed Harris.
It’s not Hairspray.
Prolly fun, just different movies.
Jane,
I sent the flowers. Did you like them? just kidding. I would if I knew your addy.
Campbell brown is repulsive.
She like Couric I can’t stand to even watch.
I hardly watch teevee anyway, but she is one of those transparent shills who worship power and bring close to it. What a whore.
My son says Superbad is good, also Bourne Ultimatum and At World’s End.
Margot @ 65
You have teenagers, am I right?
((((Jane)))),
Midnight Cowboy is a classic, with New York the way I liked it before Rudy cleaned out all its character. Or Serpico maybe. I hate corruption as much as he did. ;-)
Hey PSA,
Citing the example of Maher Arar, Justice Michael Phelan also noted that the U.S. has not been compliant with the Refugee Convention or CAT (Convention Against Torture).
“… The United States’ policies and practices do not meet the conditions set down for authorizing Canada to enter into a STCA,” Phelan wrote in his 126-page decision.
Amazing.
We are a rogue nation!
Yeah, that was my thought. Superbad was hilarious but especially geared for adolescent mentalities. A clever film though.
Yes. And thank you, Canada, for putting a name to it. I hope other countries follow suit. Time for world leaders to say enough.
Bridges of Madison County
Saw Superbad in a hotel on a business trip. My face hurt from laughing, & I’m 46.
Tonight is movie night way later when everyone gets home chez Roget- dinner followed by Buster Keaton’s 7 Chances & W.C. Field’s It’s a Gift.
Bf’s night to choose but I’m sure not complaining…
Culcha, ain’t it great? Where would we be without film, books, music and art?
all this talk of flowers and movies reminds me of a boss I had a long time ago at a law firm. Used to send the office staff to take his wife’s fur coat to the cleaners, pick up his car at the mechanic’s, arrange his vacations, etc. Once I asked someone why he didn’t hire someone to do that stuff. She said, “Well, that’s what he thinks he’s done.”
This is different though…..you folks looove being lackeys.
carolyn urban @ 72
Amen.
My ign’ant (and selfish) American question: will this make it easier for me to emigrate to Canada?
FunnyDiva

cleanup on Aisle 75?
SanderO @ 70
bald-faced lie! We are a Rogain nation… :~)
Funnydiva2002 @ 78
Apparently…
As for #75, in the words of the immortal (& sailor-mouthed) Carol Lombard, “What a stuffed shit. I mean shirt.”
I had a boss once in The Industry. I knew his shrink, the guy who detailed his car, his shrink, his dog’s shrink, his maid and his bartender.
Nuff Said.
punaise @ 80
Punaise!
nice one, dood.
FunnyD
Funnydiva2002 @ 84
my hairline tells the tale…
Heh, KKKarl on KO, title; ‘Truthless People’… ;-)
demi @ 83
The guy who detailed his car needed a shrink? Whoah.
FunnyD
punaise @ 80
I resemble the bald, not the lie. And no rogaine allowed.
“cleanup on Aisle 75?”
this from the woman who ain’t gonna wash her monitor. ooohkay.
Sorry, I should’ve said “ladies in waiting.”
demi @ 66
I have a 16 y/o and a 24 y/o, how’d you know? :-]
punaise @ 84
I know the feeling…
Ya gotta take a gander at this letter (PDF) courtesy of TPMuckraker, from the NYC Controller w/attachment to newly elected Mayor Bloomberg…it is truly astounding to look at the figures and how it all breaks down:
http://www.politico.com/static…..etter.html
I think some people here are mean to notakneejerker.
Hell, I’ve already been in trouble here, so I might as well say what I think.
Funnydiva vs. Notakneejerker?
Think about it. Or not.
punaise @ 85
Compost Brown is a minion of Darth’s equally evil but shriller wife Lynne. Says it all.
As for movies, Jane, we loved Live Free or Die Hard–pure action, Bruce Willis is the Energizer bunny with snark. DVD–disability friendlier than most movie houses.
not a knee jerker @ 88
Dude(tte)! Vas Los?
Margot,
How’d I know?
Mine: 24, 20 and 14.
Gotta love those kids.
They Keep Us In Touch.
not a knee jerker @ 89
Nope. Just a jerk. With poor reading comprehension and a sense of humor that’s funny to very few other than him/herself.
I’m done.
FunnyD
We are a rovian nation Mr Rove who is into rogain and tried to make us a rogue nation. Oh well shakespeare … no cigar
demi @ 93
???
not following you. I’m supposed to be thinking about what?
Have you been in trouble here recently? I didn’t notice, and you know how touchy I am.
Straight up, Demi. No snark from me to you. I consider you a friend here at the lake.
FunnyD
Jane
Do you have any estimate as to how many lurkers there are? You could look at your total traffic and estimate how many of us comment regularly to back it out.
I’m curous because I am now used to talking to those who comment, and tend to forget the lurkers are also listening. What reminded me of them was that 2 came out & left scolding comments during the hostage crisis.
Funny D.
No snark.
Didn’t mean to get personal.
Sorry.
I hope you have a peaceful easy evening. :)
Just like to look out for people who sometimes get picked on.
That’s all.
I mean it.
eCAHNomics @ 100
I am not Jane, but scroll all the way down and click on site meter.
eCahn… is there a NYC FDL meet up group? I would love to put a face to the nicks and commentors here.
eCAHNomics @ 101
I am (obviously) not Jane, but seem to recall seeing that only about 1% to 2% of the folks who read actually comment.
that’s not unique views and I don’t think all lurkers do comments.
In suspect most read the headliners.
There is a facebook group
From The Department Of Trussed Up Turkeys
“trussed, but very fie“
eCAHNomics @ 100
I didn’t forget about the meetup either. I have a lot of free time to do the leg work but need someone to figure out how we get in touch.
SanderO @ 103
Let’s set one up. Anyone in NYC email me at rosannecahn at aol dot com. Then we’ll put out another notice & solicit others who don’t respond tonight. After we get about 5-6 for the starter group, we can plan the first when/where. After that it’ll be easy. Just put a notice in comments & whoever shows will be fine. bluejeanshirt is also interested but I have seen any comments so don’t know if he’s around.
eCAHNomics @ 109
Look above you.
snowbird42 @ 106
Reluctant to join as I hear there are downsides.
So, bjs, you have my email address in 109. Respond & we’ll get it going.
And now they’re trying to spin it that Karl Rove was out of the loop on the decision to attack Iraq. I’m almost getting pissed.
F*ck up, Move up…
“FEMA fake ‘journalists’ get promotion.”

BTW, Netroots Nation meeting in Austin in July reminder. The registration fee goes up from $175 to $250 on 12/1, so if you’re going resiter before then. Also I did so about a week ago & still got a discount hotel room at the Hilton.
eCAHNomics @ 109
I am soooo jealous. I’ve mentioned getting an Indiana-Ohio-Michigan (or thereabouts) meetup going. I am in northern IN. But doesn’t seem to get any traction.
I’d love to meet LHP. She’s one of my idols! And a wrong Island goil.
Rove and Rudy. The possible answer to this Demo’s political prayers. You go boys!
not a knee jerker has been “cleaned up.”
msmolly @ 116
Didja checkout any of the ‘Drinking Liberally’ locales…
I don’t travel for these things. It’s a waste of energy.
I was invited to an awesome event in NOLA and I can’t justify flying there for a weekend.
But local I will go.. Metro area.
Sailing is another story.
OT, sorry. I haven’t had time to hang out here much, try to read the posts but no time for comments because I’m trying to earn some money. However, while working on my computer I keep the TV on, and I had to comment.
I just heard Keith say, in a voice mimicking Billo, as he reads a Tom Terrific cartoon of Billo, “Keith Olbermann’s penis is very, very small.” I just keep wondering, how far will they let him push the envelop?
drinking Liberally is a bar thingy or what?
SanderO @ 122
Heh, Liberals drinking… *g*
Is our government actually functioning now?
1984 @ 119
Sounds like 75 worked for Rudy’s security detail.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 124
For whom…? Is the question… ;-)
Hurray for the NYC Firepups! We’ll expect pics and lots of details. FunCity!
SanderO @ 117
Me too. I’ll make sure to give her a notice nect time I see her here.
OK… I don’t drink much but Bars when they are not noisy are fine to meet in. I don’t do noisy places well, however. PCs are pretty quiet.
Just a friendly reminder that sockpuppeting is reason to be banned from this site.
Carolyn Urban @ 51 – wait till it’s the right time, will be better for both of you. Does sound like you have the “bug” though!
And re the lurkers? As one, I’m not too eloquent when it comes to intelligently discussing on the level you guys and gals get into sometimes, and I’ve stated that before. I read – and I learn – and I realize I’m not crazy. Occasionally like tonight, I’ll wander in and leave something obviously off topic, but usually too, with an offering of my appreciation. Bottom line is don’t ever underestimate how many people turn to this site for insight and updates on things they CANNOT get from the MSM. I have many friends I’ve turned onto FDL over the years that don’t post – but definately read.
Ooh, the DNC meetup, in Vienna, Va. is being televised on Cspan2 right now…
Oklahoma kiddo @ 114
But did you see him saying it? He was laughing. It was like he was thinking he is so clever, and Rose was so stupid, that whatever BS he continues to spew will be gospel. I was delighted to see Card call him on it.
I can do pix. I raced down to a press conference about ballot issues a few weeks ago and it was a wee demo, but I did get some pix.
I would like to see more boots on the ground.
Jane has a new thread upstairs!
Bernie/Rudy upstairs
http://www.firedoglake.com/200…..ks-bernie/
Meetup? Gawd, if the they can do it NYC, why not in the BlueBayState? Meetup in Mass. anyone?
The Next Hurrahniks did it and we had a grand ol’ time.
Checking out for the evening. Will check back later to see it there are any takers.
RBG @ 131
the shadow knows….
CTuttle @ 120
Yes, we have a chapter here. But it meets on a night that’s usually bad for me due to another commitment. I do intend to check it out, maybe after the holidays. But it’s not the same as maybe meeting some of the folks who comment here and feel like friends.
New threadiness…
http://www.firedoglake.com/200…..e/#respond
carolyn urban @ 28
Speaking of people just talking, reminds me of that great little film My Dinner with Andre – don’t believe it’s out on DVD but could be wrong. Worth tracking down. A gem.
Very slow movie, but the discussion of “what makes a good day” is absolutely fantastic.
Back to catching up…
bluejeansntshirt @ 126
#75 comment is still there. Not that it’s a problem…
carolyn urban @ 38
An incredible movie. eCAHN is right – depressing, but very, very powerful (it’s basically a true story).
punaise @ 139
Just a newbie question:
I see these warnings from time to time, and when I scroll back through the comments I usually see only familiar handles. Do you ban the sockpuppet before the comment makes it into the thread?
carolyn urban @ 47
As a Mainer, I can promise you’re lucky it was a red squirrel.
Jane Hamsher @ 5
Jane – I recommend any one or these oldie but goodie flims:
Henry & June – Director Philip Kaufman
The Piano – Harvey Keitel, Holly Hunter & Sam Neill
Almost Famous – Kate Hudson & Frances McDormand,
Director Cameron Crowe
Diva – Director Jean-Jacques Beineix (who also directed Betty Blue – just in case you haven’t seen either one.
Oh yeah, I hear Natural Born Killers is always a great pick depending on your mood. ;~)
Loo Hoo. @ 134
Rove’s arrogance and petulance have set my teeth on edge ever since Bush was the Texas Guv.
I’m an insurgent now. I can hardly wait for my yellow armband.
Meanwhile we have (still) unsolved anthrax attacks sent to Democratic Senators and a nut job holding hostages at a Democrat Presidential candidate’s office.
Walks like a brownshirt, talks like a brownshirt…
LOL!
The other day someone wondered why Fitz did not indict Rove. I think Scooter was the test case to see how the WH would react to a conviction and whether a pardon would be given. IIRC the case is still open, and maybe Fitz is waiting until after Jan 2009 to file charges against Rove. Just a hunch.
FWIW, that’s a butchered and amateur trussed up chicken job.
A real chef would NEVER let the twine cross the breast area, and leave a line in it when it’s cooked.
I thought all y’all ‘progressives’ would want to KNOW that.
;-)
carolyn urban @ 28
I’m Not Rapoport (sp) is decent.
The Conversation is interesting.
There’s another one I’m having trouble recalling the title to. It’s something like ‘The Debate’, but I’m not sure.
Maybe ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolff’ or ‘Night of the Iguana’ if you like old black & whites.
There are a zillion great movies.
