Okay, as some of you may know, this is my last post at Firedoglake. It has been an amazing year and a half, but over the Thanksgiving break, circumstances arose that made me realize that it’s high time for this Theropod to flap his wee tiny forelimbs and leave the nest.
This may come as a shock to you, but I actually do stress out sometimes about what I write. There have been a number of times since I took over the Late Nite spot here that things I have written have blown back on Jane and Christy and the other great writers on the masthead at the Lake. FDL is evolving rapidly and the excitement around here is going to only get more intense as the 2008 election heats up. I want these guys to be able to go forward from here without worrying that something I write, either on the front page or in the comments, is going to cross the line and potentially hurt their reputation or keep them from being able to have more amazing guests like Naomi Klein, Senator Chris Dodd, John Dean, and anyone else who might want to come by.
So don’t be sad. This is a happy occasion.
Here, I’ll tell you a story. The night I graduated from high school, I remember stepping outside the auditorium and looking around and starting to have what Dave Ehrenstein would probably call a Peggy Lee moment (“Is that all there iiiis…?”). I was wondering if anybody else was having the same feeling when I looked over and saw two of the “popular” girls (Debbie and Melanie, swear to god) clinging to each other and sobbing in what appeared to be an epileptic seizure of grief. Hairspray melting in the sticky June air, mortarboards askew, they cried big eye-makeup tears that made me wonder if I had missed the part of the graduation program where they announced that we were all being marched to the guillotine.
The next morning I had to run to the mall for something and I saw both girls parked at their usual Saturday table in the food court with their shopping bags and Diet Cokes, cheerfully nattering away about whatever totally awesome kegger they had reigned over the night before. Today is the day I’m graduating from Miz Hamsher’s School for Wayward Firedogs, sure, but you guyyys, I’m like totally going to be right over here.
I’ve got myself a little tree-house set up over on Blogger. I’ve got my typewriter and a camp stove, a tire swing and a big sunny window-sill for Ned the Fighting Koi’s bowl. It’s going to be great. No one is going to be flooding Jane and Christy with angry emails when I do a whole set of posts about fountain pens or cell phones or whatever. Yee haw. You guys are going to get probably way more TRex than you ever wanted. (Oh, lucky world!)
We’re going to have so much fun. I’m going to make some more music and we’ll have guests and late nite dance parties and ponies and cute fluffy bunnies. And of course, great heaping bushel baskets of industrial grade snark. Meet me over there. We’re going to hang out here and then when I would normally put up Late Late Nite, I’ll put up a thread at my new digs.
So, buck up, Li’l Buckaroos! Everything is going to be fine. Now you just have more to read and everybody wins! Hooray!
I don’t even know where to begin to thank Jane and Christy and Pachacutec and the rest of the gang for letting me join the band. This has been an amazing and exciting time. I love you guys.
And you readers, too. Thank you, thank you, thank you. See you at the tree-house.

TREX!!!
*running up tail and plopping down on massive shoulder* dood, mind if i sit here tonight, for old times sake? i brought a couple boxes of tissue – and i didn’t chintz on it either – its the good kind with lotion
wow, one hella view you got from up here dood. i never thought your scales would be so comfy either.
funny, let downstairs know please
T. REX!
hiya TRex!!!!!!!!!!!!
Zed? :(
TRex,
May you always have the wind at your back…as long as you don’t eat the beans!
I got dibs on the tire swing!
Cheers, TRex, and thanks for many great times.
You may have a smiley face..but it gave me a pain in the stomach..
Suzanne @ 4
dun da-dun dun DONE!
Hi Suz, Hi TRex, Hi Late Niters!
FunnyD
2 zeds today, how dot hoppen?
Dagnabit, dude, you’re making the shadow sniffle…
the others here are wonderful, too, but there is only one TRex.
TRex, you’re back!
So if this is graduation night, where’s the speech with all the platitudes?
“Friends, as I look out upon you all this evening, we have the entire world before us . . .”
Hey, pal! You rock.
So glad you took a moment to say so long.
Don’t be a stranger, okay?
(((( TRex ))))
I was about to cry when I saw that this is your last post here, but I cheered up right away reading about your new place. Hooray!
But I’ll always remember when you reigned at Late Nite, and Late Late Nite. You rawk.
yo dude, congratulations.
see you at trextasy!
Tire Swing!
Good evening all! If I’d known this was gonna be a grande finale I would have spiffed up a bit, washed the Cheeto crumbs off my fingers and stuff.
Evening all. A somewhat bittersweet evening methinks. Glad to see TRex has his own digs (which means we will be expecting WAAAAAAAY more snark), but I for one will miss having him around the Lake. I suppose any tree house which will support a 60 foot theropod will support a fat old man as well (just as long as I don’t roll over the edge laughing too hard).
Hey Trex. Don’t know what the complaints might have been. Infrequently late nighter, but never found anything other than great company. See you at yours & all the best.
Atttaaaaaaack!
That will be your legacy at FDL.
Sauropods 4 EVAH!
TREX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peterr @ 15
I was sooooooo not the valedictorian this year. Someone else can make the big speech.
Oh, lordy, I’ll miss this place. But things are really going to be just fine, you’ll see.
yellowdog jim @ 19
Too late Jim, Cassie already called dibs ;0)
yellowdog jim @ 19
Wait yer turn! I got 5 more minutes.
wow! TRex! place won’t be the same without ya! (sigh)
but, I gotcha bookmarked…
Blow-back from the comments? Who knew?
Dish!
snarKassandra @ 9
Mommmmmm…she won’t get off and now she’s sticking her tongue out….Mommmmmm!
David-
To quote one of my favorite lines from Emily D., which was written not in her published poetry, but in a letter to her sister–
“Memory is a strange bell- both jubilee and knell”
I trust you and and Emily would have had quite a lot to discuss.
Your posts at FDL, that is when you were not stirring up hell on wheels for J&C (and really, not so many of those), have been, at their very best, absolutely brilliant. You have a very special talent. Please go forth with that talent is the best of ways. I heart you, TRex.
And, I have been kind enough never to send you the medical bills for the damage I did to myself while laughing uproariously at some of the very special posts. Geez, you can make me laugh like no one else can.
All the best, TRex. You are a gem, and a gentleman. Go get ‘em.
ATTACKKK, ATTTTTTACCCKKKK, ATTACK!!!!
ROAR!
We will fondly recall an interesting piece of history as new pups come along, and the “inside baseball” of TRex’s reign here will be ours alone.
See you over at the treehouse, Big Guy!
Hey Trex. Not frequently enuf late nighter to know what complaints might have been. Never found anything here other than great company. See you at yours & all the best.
Mad Dogs @ 30
don’t make me get down off this shoulder
Thanks for the memories, TRex. I, for one, LOVE your pen and phone posts. Guess I’m a sucker for a lover of luxury products (background in material culture).
Christine
And the band plays on. Good luck!
OldCoastie @ 28
Yep, me too. Got you a special place right next to Water Tiger.
What do I know-I’m in my jammies in the basement.
Yeah, me and the 70% of Americans-I guess we’re all in the basement.
Bipartisanship-yeah, that’s the ticket.
F% that: AAAATTTTTTAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCKKKK!!!!
Vaya con Dios T Rex.
Don’t let him fool ya.
He’s got a new gig at a theme park with better pay.
I tried to get in as a mummy but it’s only seasonal work.
eCAHNomics @ 33
Just remember, a year ago, there were dozens of folks lining up here in the comments and via email to protest that “TRex is RUINING EVERYTHING!! FDL isn’t THE SAME! WAAAAAHHH!!”
They got over it.
Hi, TRex. Glad I stopped in tonight so I could bookmark your new digs!
My nomination for TRex’s Greatest Hits collection was this post that he wrote the night Jane’s mom died. He starts like this:
And what a topic it was. If you’ve been around the ‘Lake for any length of time, you know the punch line even if you missed the story:
Do click through and (re-)read the whole thing. Spew Warning: there’s a picture of the “Young Republicans at play in their natural habitat” at the end of the post. Set down your drinks first, then click through.
TRex, you may be leaving, but you’ll never be forgotten. Not with writing and wisdom like that.
Blessings to you in your new digs, Big Guy.
EvilDrPuma @ 41
Hey EDP! How’s it going? How has your semester gone?
Noticing that the tire swing and club house are right next door to the lake, SnarKassandra jumps off the swing, throws the empty swing over to yellowdog jim, and runs into the lake, fully dressed. SPLASH!!!!!
Given all she has heard (and written!)about online bullying of kids, she is not planning to get undressed at the lake.
I LOVED TRex’s articles!
I do NOT understand whiners. That is, those who actually spend time writing their complaints about fountain pen articles. What the ….? To quote the right-wingers: GET A JOB (If you have that much time on your hands.)
Here is the rule: If you don’t like a few articles, get your own blog, which you can make exactly what YOU want, every day, every article.
It is astonishing to me what makes people WHINE today. Are these all very young, spoiled babies? Did mommy always give them exactly what they wanted? Ah, I see — every blog I like must have exactly the articles *I* want, WHEN I want them.
Sorry, but this just ticks me off. I realize TRex is being good about this. But he isn’t the only one this has happened to.
I hope NEWS blogs don’t become as BORING as regular newspapers used to be. (And probably still are, but I don’t read them now.)
TRex, ignore the email I sent. My computer was acting funny.
TRex, a parting song for ya! Separate Ways…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..re=related
Pachacutec @ 39
Honest, Pach, I tried to convince them that you were the best mummy for the job, but Bob Novak seems to have a lock on that position for life.
Tree swings & tree houses.
Used to have both at my country house.
Tree house was in old apple tree, which have a short life span (60-80 years). Tree died & tree house fell down, but not before my son’s kindergarten class came for a visit & were assigned thereafter to draw thank-you notes. Historic house baloney. It was the tree house that impressed them. Got 20/20 drawings of it in the family archives.
As for the tree swing, that was in a HUGE weeping willow that, in a strong noreaster threatened the whole house. So that one, three gigantic trunks & all, got cut down (at great expense) on the advice of everyone who saw it.
By that time, little one was all grown up, so no replacements. Nostaglia but no regrets.
Be a willow, not an aspen, TRex…in your off-therapod hours. Willows don’t break. Won’t say you’re breakin’ our hearts with your move on, ’cause you’ve left mighty big paw prints to fill and a trail we all can follow.
And if that’s not enough corny metaphors for you, will look forward to great snarky ones at your new tree-abode…etched with those lovely fountain pens.
Pax, TRex. Luv U, man.
DrDick @ 43
Been better. The teaching is fine, but I’ve been fighting with some serious depression. Which is why I haven’t been around as much lately: I’m under orders to treat myself gently, and I have a thin skin where political fuckery is concerned. But this will pass, too, in time.
*sniffles with cracking voice* attack!
I comment very little on your threads, TRex, but I must admit that in the lowest of these political times, I have turned to your posts for the humor and the complete and utter excellent trashing of the powers that be.
Good Luck. And continue to hone your craft and follow your muse.
Amazing! Not 15 minutes ago I had reason to think of Peggy Lee, and specifically that song. Life runs in tight little circles …
See you around: it clearly is inevitable;)
I’ll miss you here at the lake, but you went straight into my blogroll. Why do I have to be David530?
{{{{{TRex}}}}}
I looked forward to your posts. You were just quirky enough to suit my vision of the world. In case no one has said so yet, it takes a lot of courage (and guts) to be front and center. I can see why anyone would stress. It is much easier to hide in the commenter bushes. This is just my simple way of saying I admire your ability to observe with a unique perspective, always provocative. I’m off to check out your tree house.
snarKassandra @ 44
That is probably one of your finest pieces, Cassie. Smart, thoughtful, insightful and to the point. An important topic as well. I generally agree with you that the best way we can protect our children is to give them the tools to deal with bad situations and bad people. Of course we also have to be ready to step in more directly when they are overmatched.
snarKassandra @ 46
707! Is this the latest line for, the dog ate my homework.
right, TRex. Thanks for ignoring my comment at #31. This seriously decreases the chances that we will ever eat Dim Sum together. :(
snarKassandra @ 44
That’s probably a good idea, young lady.
And, don’t hog the swing.
For your own good.
Best wishes to ya TRex. You’ve always been an enjoyable read so I’ll be checking out your new digs.
Who sent the emails? People with no sense of humor?!!
I *liked* the fountain pen post. So did my boyfriend. (Is that significant?)
TRex, I’ll miss you at the lake. But I’m going to bookmark your site. You really are a talented therapod.
Late Night at the lake won’t be the same but Congratulations on your commencement. It’s already bookmarked. Attack, Attack, Attaaaack!
TheraP @ 53
So well put! Thanks both you guys.
EDP, I hope you come even if you feel depressed. We will cheer you up.
Thanks Dr Dick
TRex @ 25
will be here in the comments at all?
I hope this means we will see progress on your book.
And I hope Jane has you back for Book Salon when it comes out.
TRex, you and the Late Nite gang got me through my thesis last year. Late Nite was perfectly timed (10 p.m. CST) for me to take a break before plunging into the long hours of work ahead.
I hope you have a blast at your new place. I’ll come by to watch.
Well, Teddy, it’s you and me holding up the foofy fort.
EvilDrPuma @ 51
Sorry to hear about the depression. I know from experience how that can be. I had a good semester as well. Teaching 4 classes a semester instead of 7 is a definite improvement (though the paycheck is a bit anemic).
So did I miss the link to the foutain pen post? If I’m going to hang out here, I’d like to know the history. I used to use fountain pens untils they leaked all over my business suit on a flight before an important meeting. Foutain pens can’t endure the less-pressurized atmosphere in air.
May the Goddess bless you, TRex!
As for your detractors…May they know themselves biblically if they can’t take a joke.
All the best, TRex.
Keep lifting your voice in both snark and song. Thanks for all the great Late and Late Late Nites at the Lake.
See ya at teh treehowse.
FunnyDiva
Best wishes, TRex. It’s been an honor, and more than a little intimidating, to follow your late, late nights in the a.m.
You’ve a great heart, and it’s made you a great writer. You’re just getting started.
eCAHNomics @ 22
Ditto. Perhaps it was “visitors” who got so offended and wrote and changed our little Lake. Personally, I’d rather be a little short on the “politically correctness” or even politeness, rather than attempting to assure that no one gets his/her feathers ruffled, sensibilities tousled, etc.
I love your humor and am in awe of your writing. I’ve sent a link to one of your creations to MANY a friend of mine, usually with the remark “this is why I love FDL” or “this is great writing.”
Best of luck. I’ll be visiting the treehouse. And LMK if you drop by DeeCee so i can show you the good pen place.
foofy fort.
Maybe as Frontliners, but I think there are a few foofies here commenting.
IMHO.
Oh, sorry.
Kevster @ 23
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAWWWWWWWAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!11!!!!!1111111
*sniff*
I remember your first Late Night ever. *sniff*
Hell, I even remember Incomprehensible Demoralization.
I’ll come see you at your new place, I reckon.
snarKassandra @ 65
Thanks, Cassie. I appreciate that.
Indeed, we have the foofy freedom fighters in full effect.
Farewell, Mighty TREx. As one who precipitated quite a shitstorm on one of your posts (pssst, it was the one about the c-word), I apologize for getting you into trouble. I promise not to do that again.
We’ve watched you grow into a giant. It’s high time you moved out and got your own place.
Love you, man.
I do notice that commenters here are held to a very high standard of concern for not offending others. I like that, in a way, but by no means think it is a requirement. Edginess has its benefits.
Valley Girl @ 58
Oh, whatEVER, VG.
*scoops VG up in a giant Theropod hug*
no one brought food for the graduation party?
Is foofy the same as poofter?
eCAHNomics @ 70
The fountain pen post, as in one? There were several, like this and this and this . . .
DrDick @ 57
Thanks for the link and I agree..well worth reading and thinking about.
In all sincerty, Thanks for doing a Good Bye.
We’ve had a lot of fun at Late Night with you as our Host.
Summer was especially great.
Some people have left.
Asked or otherwise.
A time for everything, I’ve heard.
You are a gifted writer.
(and you have a beautiful vocal voice too!)
Best of luck to you.
I may show up to give you a hard time from time to time.
Pachacutec @ 68
man up, dude
Four links to your new blog? TRex, it’s obvious you know one of the secrets of life: if you really want to succeed at anything, you have to be your own pimp.
Thanks for all of it. You’re a hoot when you want to be and a serious, well-informed voice the rest of the time. Besides, if it weren’t for you linking to that Pinkertones video, I wouldn’t have bothered to go see them perform at South by Southwest. But I did, and they were great. Best of luck, keed. Knock ‘em dead.
EDP
It’s hard not to be depressed in this political environment, especially if there’s anything amiss in your personal life. Hang in.
TRex @ 82
And, I scoop you up in a giant VG hug. I think we can work out the Dim Sum issue. xxxoooo
Who would complain? Your posts are the perfect antidote to all the depressing news we endure all day. Is this in response to that ‘foul mouthed’ bull. What’s next? Can’t use the ‘f’ word. FDL will be the poorer when you’re not around.
TRex
Thanks for the laughter and the tears.
I will miss you. Drop out of that tree and take a swim at the Lake once in awhile.
Your new place is great – love the carpet.
cleter @ 77
You better.
Suzanne @ 83
Where is TexBetsy when we need her? And Suzanne, you must have a special graduation dive. Unless Kassie’s rendition is sufficient.
That up there looks a lot like a picture of an Oscar statue fucking a dinosaur.
thanks Cassisita!
swinging … jumps out … flying ….
“next!”
eCAHNomics @ 70
Pen P*rn!
We will miss you here, but I’m sure there will be a well worn path to the tree house (Therapods climb trees? Who knew?)
Good luck let us know when the book is coming out.
solai @ 92
amen.
eCAHNomics @ 70
That’s what you get for using cartridges instead of emptying your piston converter back into the jar of ink before the flight! *g*
Now you guys are making me want to get out my one and only fountain pen. But it would be too embarrassed by the exalted fountain pen company that people keep around here.
Sigh.
FunnyDiva
don’t make me get out the Very Serious Paper and Pen!
TREX!!!
The right wing Blog-O-Sphere(such as it is) is breathing a sigh of relief that they won’t have the Mighty Trex shredding their witless writing and whinings. It won’t be easy, or as much fun, to snark without you.
Great Joy in your New Endevour!!!!!!
eCAHNomics @ 90
I’m trying my best. Meanwhile, I just noticed that I need to shower tonight before I can retreat to my book and bed. Be excellent to each other.
Thers @ 96
Oscar is JUST A FRIEND, thank you.
I’m working on a dive from up here on the big guy’s shoulder but these scales are amazingly comfy.
long time reader, rare commenter
i read trex and fdl the very first thing in the morning on my treo while i’m soaking in the bathtub before beginning a usually stressful day in the trenches. now i’ll have to decide which to go to first…argh…more stress!
i enjoy the camaraderie here and the prodigious intellect.
well….damn it, TRex! I’ve been giggling over your Late Nite posts the next day, the whole time you’ve been on here….and now that I’m finally up late myself, you’re……LEAVING??
:o( :o( :o(
madmommy @ 98
Ooops, my literal interpretation was unknowingly p*ornographic. *embarrassed*
it would be irresponsible not to speculate.
I know that doesn’t *really* say anything.
TRex @ 104
BOYfriend, I would say from the pic.
eCAHNomics @ 81
But it seems that once a line is crossed then thing seem to turn to shit. FDL is one of a very few sites where I can read though all of the comments in a thread. I don’t think there is a better moderated political site.
Just calling it like I see it. The position of the statue in the background, the HELLO! dinosaur face…
What would Sister Touldjah say, or Don Surber?
DrDick @ 110
A very close boyfriend, too.
Night EDP.
Valley Girl @ 31
That quote was in a letter to Mrs. Holland; Emily just called her Sister — but re everything else you said: YES!!!!!!!! We agree totally on the unparalleled TRex. I’d tell him that, but it might go to his head.
Meanwhile, I’ll go to his site.
Holy molie … glad I stopped by …. Oh Trex… will miss you here at late night… AND will be stopping by your tree house…..
That’s a hard rubber Oscar.
Ahem.
Stephen Fry: “How did you manage to keep Nancy for so long?”
Hugh Laurie: “I’ve never been nancy, John.”
TRex,
Sorry to see you move on, but I’ve already marked your new location. I’ve enjoyed ALL of your posts (and am delurking for the first time to let you know.) Your essay on Writing an Angry Letter is (IMHO) the best, and I’ve passed it along to many angry letter writers.
Best wishes, see ya later,
-J
So sorry I am late to the party. Been busy baking graduation cookies and therapod cake. Enjoy all!
TRex, hope we see you around a bit.
TRex – as a regular lurker of FDL for the past year or so, I’ve always enjoyed your posts. Just the right amount of seriousness and humor at the right times. Living in the Mountain time zone, I don’t have to stay up late to read Late Nite FDL. Best of luck at your new home, I’ll make it a point to check out the ‘treehouse’ from time to time.
(((((TREX)))))
You know it’s getting veddy cold up here in the
Boston area…got another mighty limb for a
northern there in much warmer and dryer GA??
Sorry to see you leave, but like the rest of the
gang, I went right over to your blog and marked it on the list….can only imagine what my late
night reads will be like…at least you are on
ET so I can still go to bed at my usual 1 a.m.!!
I wish you nothing but happiness and good luck
in your new “diggs” and that you continue to
be happy!! If you are even up this far north,
let me know and I’ll show you around!!
Carry on young man and keep us laughing!!
Steve-AR @ 111
Point taken. Since I’m an infrequent commenter elsewhere, I haven’t really run into that very much, but I can imagine. Guess that’s why I stay here, especially since a major problem with Rs is how mean they are.
EDP!
Sleep well after your shower and whatever.
New day tomorrow.
:)
TRex @ 104
Little Oscar and Big Oscar?
AZ Matt @ 102
Oh nooooooo! If you stop shredding the witless right-wing writings and whinings, I really will have to cry!
FunnyDiva
Lower lip quivering dangerously…
TRex @ 40
did i sleep through these episodes, Or What?
did i go selectively deaf?
i missed these anti-TRex comments/attitudes.
completely.
like, really?
i am so sorry.
i wish i could been there in your defense.
even though you would never need me too.
you rock.
Bedtime Bye y’all.
trex – i know i should write something gracious and hopeful and happy… but i’m just not the writer you are. part of the joy of hanging out here has been your presence in the community – in the comments and especially your late night posts (even when i only see them in the morning). the community here will be lessened by your absence.
but am so glad to know that i can find you at your new treehouse hangout. will see you there…
*reverse two and a half somersaults with three and a half twists, in the free position, holding lit sparklers in each hand*
Night Cassie.
Suz, did the Rex ever, ever do his promised video? Did I miss it, perhaps?
HUGS
TRex.
I love your tree house, can I bring you a housewarming drawing?
estiv @ 89
Awww Gawd, I’ve been looking for this! Luv ya Trex.
trex,
there is something not quite right about this.
i’m glad you’re not troubled by it. and i can certainly understand the rationale. we all want the best for fdl.
but when one of its singular voices — yours –has to leave so the rest of the site can be more effectively….mainstream (there is no other word)… that’s just a bit sad.
be well, my friend. you will be missed here.
Suzanne @ 130
Woooo-Hoooo! A truly fitting dive for the occassion.
snarKassandra @ 128
Nite, Missie!
Maureen @ 122
Yes, ma’am!
Shadowstalker @ 132
yes he did…. let me see if i can find it for you
cool dive!
Suzanne @ 130
Niiiiiiiice.
Just climb back up once you’ve dried off.
And bring me a popsicle from the freezer, would you?
Dearest Therapod
Leave it to you to fully entertain us and then to take us to a new place to boot. Hope you will be even more unbound in your new digs.
You have my eternal gratitude for your intellect and gift of late night snark. You and Patrick have to be the best to ever come out of Morehead hospital. What did they feed you in that ICU?
here it is shadowstalker
Joel @ 119
Hey,Joel
Welcome to the commenter pool. It’s hard to go back to full-time lurking, you know.
Got a link to the Angry Letter essay? I must’ve missed it.
Best,
FunnyDiva
My favorite TRex expression:
Liberal Heart @ 115
Thanks for the info- I knew the line from the play “Belle of Amherst”, and googled it. But obviously my googling did not give me the full story!
TexBetsy @ 120
No one is eating? I worked very hard in the kitchen on very little notice you know. Eat!
Hey Trex!
I can’t wait to see all you do at the new outpost! Expanding into your own digs is indeed a graduation (in the best tradition of great bloggers like Billmon and Jane who launched their own after time at big orange) and it will be a blast to see what happens next!
Bravo Trex!
TexBetsy @ 120
Knew we could count on you. Thanks.
*snagging popcicle from freezer after drying off*
dood, you gotta get an elevator – my fake knee can’t do this up and down all nite.
My last chance to piss off the theropod with a WaPo0 chatz announcement: Froomkin at 1pm eastern tomorrow. Questions accepted anytime.
“Who the fuck cares about the fucking Washington Post anymore, Teddy?”
TexBetsy @ 147
Sorry Betsy, I’ve been too busy here dabbing at the tears ;-) Thanks for the snacks!
solai @ 145
That’s Amy Winehouse, baby.
Who has thankfully canceled her tour and sought the help of a physician.
Hopefully she’ll clean up. I’m praying.
Well, geez. In the times when I was too swamped with real life or election work to check in much, I always tried to make it to Late Nite, and I still will, because of the community, but it won’t be quite the same.
We still be imaginary friends over at your new place, right?
Suzanne @ 130
I love the sparklers, but the dive is fantastic too.
About 8 years ago the NY Pops performed Handel’s Fireworks with fireworks accompaniment, for the first time since its orignial performance (or at least that;s the myth they perpetrated). So my suggestion is that you start thinking about musical accompaniment for your dives. The imagination runs wild.
Jeez. How can some words on a screen written by folks I’ve never even met make me so sad?? I guess because I hate all good-byes.
TRex ROCKS.
good night.
Steve-AR @ 111
OMG yes, this is why I love this site more than any other.
eCAHN, did you see this post?
It was right handy!
Trex, you are gonna take the Pretenders like Malkin and O’Reilly to task on occasion, I hope?
TeddySanFran @ 151
I think tomorrow’s chat will go something like this . . .
Thanks for all of your great writing and snark. I have personally incorporated your mantra into my life.
ATTTTTTTTTTTAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCK!
TRex-
I’ll be lurking over at your place. I always read your posts and the comments in the a.m. and love them.
You’re the bestest theropod I’ve evah known! :)
Here’s something I’ve missed for awhile, even before you left, dear TRex – the troll slapdown known as TRexing. (somewhere in the 400 comments accompanying this post is an explanation).
I used to gasp in admiration at your audacity and at how hopping mad you made them as you turned their own words around on them and made them look like fools.
Redshift @ 154
Of course!
I hate being late to a goodbye party. My heart is breakin and happy at the same time. TRex was brilliant at FDL. Just think what he is going to do over at I am TRex unconstrained. Ha! I still love you TRex. And someday I am coming to GA.
TRex! Don’t leave us! (unless you have a better gig) You. Are. Extremely. Talented!
Suzanne @ 143
Thank you! I will take the link home and spend the forever necessary to watch it on dialup!
“Trexstasy”
Even the new address is brilliant!
eCAHNomics @ 90
EDP,
FDL has been a serious component in my recovery from politically induced depression.
that along with my anti-depressant medication of these last five years.
when i’m alone i scream a lot too.
and reading TRex is an essential catharsis.
dmg @ 135
I agree.
G’nite, all — and peace to you, TRex!
btw.
If you see Billmon wandering the wilderness in you exile, could you tell him to come back.
First Billmon. Now TRex. Serious bummer.
I Am TRex is off to a hot start..78 comments on the last thread. I remember when FDL started 0 comments, 3, 1 and it was usually Redd Hedd.
Trex,
Took a look at the new Trex digs, way cool! Picking on Tucker already? Is this just a warm up for bigger prey?
TexBetsy @ 147
Yum! I went straight from work to a meeting where there were sandwiches, but no dessert other than a bag of Chips Ahoy. Thanks!
Night Peterr.
eCAHNomics @ 108
Nah, it’s just the joke when the pen people start drooling over some incredibly gorgeous, obscenely priced fountain pen.
TexBetsy @ 147
Mouth full…gweat food…eating smore.
Loo Hoo. @ 158
Just what I was looking for. I can empathize. Thanks.
Ok, I read this blog everyday, I never comment, but I think in this instance I will. TRex, large dinosaur with tiny arms and big heart, you are my favorite. I make a special trip to read what you blog each and every night. Is this what the blogosphere is coming to? Having to be politically correct in order to draw the “right” people? If so, blogs will soon be no better than Time and Newsweek.
AZ Matt @ 174
You can stick a fork in Tucker.
If you ever run short of fluffy bunnies, just call. ^_^
And yes, depression is such fun. It’s probably impossible to convey to anyone who doesn’t know it themselves, but so it goes.. we all have our remedies and paths outward, and crucially, our friends. One element I’ve found most helpful is Second Life, for its ability to convey oneself more ideally, as well as the overarching drive towards better means of communication regardless of distance (and visas, given most countries’ insistence on the accursed things for any kind of prolonged existence outside of one’s region of birth). After all.. who could resist the lure of exploring where imagination is the sole constraint? eg this forestland scene, never real, but no less beautiful for that.
dmg and solai – just an aside: FDL has no plans to become mainstream.
Blogs aren’t (imho) meant to be static – and change can be really good when everyone gets to stretch out a bit and experiment more.
And we’ll all be visiting Trex at his new digs!
Ok the tree house it is, then. My dad built a beautiful tree house in a HUGE (imagine)magnolia tree. The tree is still there. We’ll be there.
antonia @ 180
Ha. Silver lining. Sad departure brings out new faces. Comment more often, antonia.
Thanks for all your efforts and hard work at the Lake, TRex. Great job. I haven’t been able to check in for awhile, then tonight I just happened to, and WHAMMO — I was hit by your last post at FDL. After I get over my shock, I will make sure to visit over at the Treehouse. Take care.
LibertyLover @ 159
But of course! I snark, therefore I am!
Funnydiva2002 @ 144
FunnyDiva,
Here’s what I have:

Enjoy and use it often!

xy-cars, watches, and pens…xx-purses, purses, shoes, and jewelry.
TexBetsy @ 147
So sorry TexB, thanks so much for the short notice yummy treats. You are the snack queen of late night!
Hey TRex,
Just as a matter of history, what is your own personal most favorite post that you wrote at FDL? I have my own short list, but I would like to know yours. xxooo
eCAHNomics @ 181
True, but it is like kicking the crap out of the Doughy Pantload, too easy!
Thnx TRex. I am not a late night lurker here most of the time, but I wish you all the best in yr new site!
antonia @ 180
First comment..you are doomed..welcome..keep commenting
Oh, and if you need a source, I can supply cute fluffy bunnies.
OK, so who’s the keeper of the stats? This post must have attracted the most comments in the shortest period of time, dontcha think?
Suzanne @ 143
i’d missed this also.
thanks.
TRex: your singing is terrific.
Thank you.
antonia @ 180
That’s so not the way to look at it. Just remind yourself how much my peace of mind will improve knowing that nothing I write is going to get people yelling and screaming at Christy when she’s trying to chill out with the Peanut.
THAT is why I’m going solo. It was weighing on me too much to worry all the time.
Thanks for commenting and coming by.
*big hug*
Thanks to Trex and Late nite, shy lurkers became cautious commenters, cautious commenters developed strong personalities, and strong personalities became powerful critics, and onward…
Now it’s upward to the tree house.
So thanks Trex, you were an incredible Pen-Pal.
Welcome to all the lurkers. We’d love to hear from you more often.
This goes down as a bad day. I am sorry, but I love TRex at FDL! What are we going to do without late night? And we’re talking PC???!!! To hell with PC??!! Is this because Jane got hung up on by Time magazine? *uck Time Magazine and …..
eCAHNomics @ 181
ah, that mental image …
him: forked
TexBetsy @ 147
Hey! Who ate all the cake?
Siun @ 183
siun,
i have been a reader and commenter here for many moons — at least two (maybe three?) redesigns ago, well before the glorious summer of lamont, when christy and jane and marcy were first saying “hold the phone” about the lies and bile used to smear the wilsons and hide the truth.
since then, it’s been a thing of beauty to see fdl grow and draw strength from the army of whipsmart essayists who have come to make their home here. not a day goes by that there isn’t a post or two or six that aren’t informative, well researched and ahead of the curve. it is an awesome display of the very best attributes of progressives nationwide.
And the very best point about fdl and its stirring work is that it’s been INCLUSIVE. i never have felt like i wasn’t welcome to read, or leave a comment, and never felt that the writers were on any kind of short leash.
for whatever reason, and wherever the impetus came from, to say that trex moving on is a cause for unalloyed joy? no, not for me. i know everything good has growing pains, but this departure seems unnecessary.
I am a Jug. Party time.
Me and prolly a zillion other people will be joining you at your tree-house, TRex – hope it’s a big one!
ok, one more thing……
amongst all the great and funny posts, one stands out on the level of purely analytic brilliance: the one where TRex compared the successful maneuverings of Brittney Spears’ divorce lawyer to the bumbling ineptitude of our political leaders….and concluded that what we really need are people who know how to DO their fucking job….
I know I’m not doing the post justice, anyone have a link?
Nola Sue @ 203
sorry
(blushing)
Valley Girl @ 192
You’ll have to dig up the links, but I was particularly fond of “FOUND! The Lost Diaries of Ana Marie Cox” and “A Salute to Newt”.
bellesouth @ 202
completely unrelated so hold your fire.
Not worried about Jane staying out of trouble; she won’t! Remember the black-face picture. That created a BIG stir as I remember it. Then it seems to me there were several other kerfuffles. Then there was the time Jane ran Lotus off for what appeared to be a minor offense.
Discipline. Guess sometimes we go too far. Oh, well, I guess I knew I should be doing this less, now I guess I will. I’ll just have to use some self-discipline.
I was kinda wondering, though, if this has anything to do with why I haven’t seen OK Kiddo or Raven around for several days? In fact, there may be others that I haven’t realized I haven’t seen lately yet. Boy, you miss a couple of posts and all of a sudden, you don’t know what’s going on at all anymore.
See you sometime at your place, TRex, and good luck. Take care of your kitties and Ned, and keep Ned safe from the kitties. Till we meet again, I’ll say goodbye and wish you a great night.
Nola Sue @ 204
*burps*
TRex, I add your link to my toolbar and look forward to
reading youdrinking up at your new late nite cafe.Pour me another cuppa, and see you again tomorrow.
aw man TRex,
It was you that drew me out to comment last year. Just before the elections in fact. What a crazy year it has been here as i’ve made myself at home with the Late Nite Crew. I’ll be over at your new Treehouse for sure!
Sad to see ya go from here though.
TRex @ 210
I will have to dig up the links also, TRex. But, I do well remember “The Lost Dairies of Ana Marie Cox”. God, omigod, that was hilarious and brilliant. It was hysterical.
Steve-AR @ 190
Speaking only for me, I’d rather have the car than the other girly stuff. Hubby found a 57 Chevy 4-door wagon ready to restore while we were out of town. Rear facing way-back seat, drop tailgate and fins. Lots of chrome. Drool, drool. All it needs is a conversion to bio-diesel and I would have the coolest mom car of all time.
OK, so call me a hypocrit. I’d given up on Dowd, but I must admit I like this column.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11…..oW55aq9Y4Q
Bumiller on Rice. I can sniff the panties.
dmg, “…but this departure seems unnecessary.” I concur 100%… 8-(
you’re already bookmarked, TRex. Looking forward to more of same what got you there.
CTuttle @ 218
Please see my comment at 199. Totally necessary. For me, for FDL. It’s going to be a good thing, I promise you.
Alright, gang. Time to head back to my lair. I will join you from there momentarily.
Great, just what I need…
*Another* must read blog…
Congrats Trex.
Jane loves the snark and llllanguage as much as the rest of us. I think she’s looking out for America, and now that she and Christy are getting more of a voice on radio and tv, more and more new people are coming to the lake.
This includes the 59 year old woman in smalltown, Pennsylvania, who dresses up for church every Sunday, and still wears gloves and a hat on Christmas and Easter.
Imagine, after listening to Christy or Jane, deciding to visit FDL for the first time…and being greeted with a TRex post!!!
It would not compute to her. She wouldn’t know that TRex knows what he’s talking about, and that he’s just having too much fun with reality. She might freak and scream…and then not trust Jane or Christy the next time.
You know I love you TRex, but Jane is on a mission. A really good mission.
Make sense?
TRex, I am your loyal fan 4 ever! I am like totally bookmarking you, hon!
TRex @ 220
*sniffle sniffle* will you come back and visit occasionally?
climbing down off the big guy’s shoulder, turning, giving him a big ole hug and (taking deep breath) climbing into mod tower
I’m glad I stayed up to get the news. (I usually read your posts in the morning…) I’ve already got the Tree House in my RSS feed — nice digs!
TRex @ 219
Feel free to bring the leftovers over to the new place.
Loo Hoo..did you read the latest eriposte?
dmg @ 205
That was beautiful.
musicsleuth @ 224
Which program do you use for RSS? Peanut butter has my google RSS feeding into a blogsite, but I am not sure google is the fastest.
i’m among those caught by surprise. we know where you’ll be and you can expect company at all hours.
all the best. and never change!
Shit, man, i didn’t know you were leavin’ here. i really enjoyed the irreverence and thought there was a place for it here. You were (are) a pisser, but funny they got. It’s the way you were funny and I still think they could use it. But that’s a decision to be made in the boardroom high atop 8033 Sunset Boulevard, I guess. I’ll follow you at the other place – already checked out the first post but I just think you had a role here and played it well. Could be a win-win situation maybe, as you go out there on your own. Fare thee well. I’ll be around your new place.
BFL
TexBetsy @ 229
Stupid question time (my specialty) what, exactly is an RSS feed?
madmommy @ 232
Thanks MM, I was wondering the same.
I really enjoyed your I don’t know anything about Japan rant last week.
TexBetsy @ 230
I use Sage on my Firefox browser. All I need to do is click the little sage leaf icon and I see my list and all the latest posts :-)
Loo Hoo. @ 223
I’m sixty two, so I guess I’m too old to love TRex. Too bad, too late.
Jane published a black-faced Joe Lieberman. ‘Nuff said?
CTuttle @ 219
fahrender @ 231
p.s. the post you have up over there now is table grade ……
TRex – you’re da best! what a ride it’s been …
will catch you in your new venue, and hopefully here in the FDL peanut gallery.
CTuttle @ 217
i believe we have heard our favorite Therapod explain, patiently and nicely, that this is all for HIS mental peace and psychological tranquility.
that sounds like necessary to this dog’s ears.
like, the fdl seat is too fucking hot/bright/reaching critical mass.
and TRex is way the coolest.
like what if you blog to hurl overripe produce from the balcony and suddenly find you’re center stage with spot lights and enemies AND your best friends will get shit if you fart sideways?
heh, maybe?
madmommy @ 231
Instead of actually reading 90 different newspapers & blogs four times a day, the headlines from all of them collect in one place for me and I can click on the headlines that seem interesting and either see the whole story or the first paragraph. Then I can hit the SHARE button and you can see it in either of the places I linked to.
I also have the blog posts from my kids’ school websites and even the teachers’ sites.
RSS = really simple syndication. It’s a way to subscribe to your favorite blogs or news feeds and quickly scan the contents in (more or less) real time.
*sniffles, swallows past lump in throat, dabs eyes with tissue* Late for Late nite! Dang. shoulda stocked up on tissues …
i came for the Plame, stayed for the Late Nite snark. I started seriously never-miss-a-night reading Late Nite when the crew went off to YK1 and left the keys with TRex. It was somewhere around the time of Mama Rex’s mac n cheese recipe that i started delurking. Slippery slope!
TRex, you’ve given me lotsa laughs to counteract the depressing daily deluge of Rethug evils. You betcha i’ll be over to the tree house.
TRex @ 199
200 comments and counting, Trex, and everyone has been so circumspect that it’s become scarily un-Late nite. As it’s late in the BlueState and the RedHead is getting hot and bothered, I’ll be unpolitic thing and ask:
Why in the world has no one has explained what caused the yelling and screaming? Truly it can’t be pens and cell phones and more pens and then again those wonderful pens? This is a political blog, so why can’t its own politics be matter for blogging? Will the Angry Lettermen, women, children, and species please come forward and explain themselves?
Using Trex’s wonderful instructions for writing angry letters would be the gracious way to do it.
musicsleuth @ 234
How long after a news story is posted does it appear on your list?
Loo Hoo. @ 222
if you want it to.
except you’re making the case for even less diversity of voice, or message — just to make sure the folks who visit aren’t offended by what they read here.
look, networks of all sorts face this sort of thing all the time: how to have a wide, entertaining menu of programming.
that’s why christy’s “pull up a chair” is so perfect — for saturday morning. and scarecrow’s a.m. essays are always worth reading weekdays.
trex is a perfect fit for late-night here. i for one do not need another seminar on why social security privitization is a scam and a bad thing past midnight. i want to unwind, and laugh at the hypocrites of the day.
trex says he’s happy. that’s good. this is not that big a deal in the scheme of things, i know. but at least concede the possibility that there are downsides to every step taken. and allow me to mourn this particular tradeoff.
TexBetsy @ 246
I’ve seen FireDogLake posts on my RSS feed faster than the website.
totally OT (and apologies for that)
hey ydj, check yer fb mail when you get a chance, please :-)
TexBetsy @ 241
Oh gawd, now I will have a new toy to play with! Thanks for the info Betsy, and also musicsleuth.
TRex, I still say that had to be Atlas Shrugged in drag doing that Christmas tree spiel at your place.
dmg – “unalloyed joy”? of course not …
I see Trex’ move as much more like when my son at age 20 moved away to Austin and I cried for days … but it was the best thing ever for him to have his own space and create his own life in his own way. Doesn’t change the love and connection but the kids grow up, ya know…
and I think Trex’s talent is immense and will flourish in his own digs – I have immense faith in him.
musicsleuth @ 246
Well that’s definitely faster than mine.
Valley Girl @ 216
As I recall, some of us were at YK1 when Christy announced from the stage that Wonkette had lost her notebook and to please return it. Several of us said at once, “Oh, TRex must write a post….”
Not sure if any of us even talked to him about it (quite likely it was his own original idea) but the entire episode was one amazing example of the FDL hive mind.
One of my all time favorites by TRex: “Are You There, God? It’s Me, TRex.” starring Assistant Principal Bill O’Reilly and Jane.
Hilarious, of course — it’s TRex. But brilliant from top to bottom.
I choose to think of his move as a re-potting. Everyone will thrive, even though the pot may look like it has a bare spot for a while. (But I’m a firm believer in rationalizations. From The Big Chill: Rationalizations are more important than sex. Ever gone a week without a rationalization?)
This reminds me of an incident 30 years ago. I had just seen Art Buchwald speak at my college and told my father about it. He had never read Buchwald and knew nothing about him but made a point of reading his column that week. Well, iirc, the column was about the value of NOT voting. My father was completely confused. Didn’t get it at all. Took some explaining, but my father grew to love Buchwald’s columns.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 243
Whoa, a mac and cheese recipe?! Casserole style? I have been jonesing for one a neighbor lady made for us as kids and have not been able to re-create it yet. Please share, or you can send it to me on FB. Thanks!
Going to miss reading your late night and late late night posts. You were the last thing I read before turning in for the night. I do not thing late night will be the same.
I hope this doesn’t mean we are all going to have to be good. Geez.
Hey! I found the link to one of TRex’s fav. posts!
Late Nite FDL: FOUND! The Lost Notebook of Ana Marie Cox
Siun @ 251
siun,
i’m sorry. i guess i wasn’t clear.
i have no doubt trex will do just fine.
i’m vastly more concerned about what this suggests about fdl.
The snark and sense of humor keep us going. We two lurkers have
ALWAYS looked forward to your posts. We don’t get why you have to
leave.
We are bookmarking you “as we speak.”
LoudounLib @ 248
Heh, LL have you forgotten the Late Nite creed? Nothing is OT on Late Nite… ;-)
I need to make it an early night as I have my seminar tomorrow. Take care and enjoy the snark.
CTuttle @ 262
Well yeah, CT, but this is TRex’s night ;-)
And hey, good on you for your new blog!
WAHHHHH!!!!

I too feel that the loss of TREX to the lake is a huge error. This is my first post to this site, which I have followed for years. Silent no more.
Say it ain’t so, TREX.
However, I have already book marked TREX – the next generation onto my bookmarks bar. I will see y’all there.
Nite, DD!
Nola Sue @ 254
I like your analogy! Great FB pic, BTW, one of my favorite places. Are you from NOLA or just a fan?
madmommy @ 257
*ndfg emerges triumphant from her recipe box* here it is!
TRex says:
September 6th, 2006 at 10:45 pm *
RexMama’s Mac and Cheese
2 cups dry elbow macaroni block sharp cheddar cheese (8 oz), NOT GRATED, cut into 1/4 inch (or so) slices, crosswise half stick of butter, sliced 1/2 cup milk salt and pepper
Boil the noodles until they are tender. And here’s Secret No. 1: Do not drain them or rinse them. Let them sit for a few minutes after they stop boiling until they expand and get *really* tender, then spoon them with a slotted spoon into a medium sized ungreased casserole dish.
Cover bottom of bowl with noodles. Add a layer of cheese and a couple of slices of butter. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Repeat, ending with cheese on top. Pour in the milk.
Secret No. 2: Do not stir.
Bake at 350˚ for 15-20 minutes until edges are brown.
Serve hot.
Hi and bye, DrDick! I finished my book today!
Won’t say who got kicked off, but directions to the Treehouse are on the toolbar!
Nola Sue @ 255
Your choice as well as m.o. are inspiring. Can we a list of everyone’s most best favorite Late Nites?
Valley Girl @ 260
Thanks, VG! I think that was the post that convinced me TRex was able to conjure HST’s ghost. My favorite line, as Ana Marie and MoDo are getting even more stoned, “Now we just need to track down some vodka and find out why we have Joe Klein’s business card and $50 in our pocket…..”
g’nite, DrD. I loved all the wonderful Mali music you linked the other night, thanks!

What a gracious and sensitively-announced, if sudden, goodbye, TRex. Sounds like you won’t be changing who you are in order to conform to the opinions of others, and have made a choice that will allow you to continue to be yourself without unwanted ‘harmful side effects’ to those you care about. A selfless deed in support of FDL as a whole, which you have thoughtfully framed as a good thing all around.
TheraP @ 53 and GabrielOak @ 186, among others above, speak for me. You’ve obviously worked hard to meet an unrelenting nightly posting commitment, and you’re certainly leaving on a high note with this one. I hope and trust that this will turn out to have been the right decision for all concerned. I wish you the very best.
Valley Girl @ 260
Hey, VG.
As a certain Mr. Zimmerman once said, “The times, they are a changin’”
an end to an era,, but the start of a new day, see , uh, i mean will lurk on by the new digs.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 274
Sweet! Thanks girlfriend, it is comfort food time of the year, and the kiddos do love their mac and cheese!
Suzanne @ 281
I just gained weight reading that recipe.
madmommy @ 274
A native, born & raised. Now living at the upper end of the Miss’ippi where my husband’s from and where bridges fall down. We joke we’ve been connected via chemistry all our lives. ;)
marymccurnin @ 287
ain’t that the truth. I need to try that recipe!
marymccurnin @ 287
I just gained weight watching you read that recipe.
Nola Sue @ 287
So where did you go to High School?
Redshift @ 196
There is wisdom here.
Ed*ard Teller @ 279
ET! That really was a TRex classic, wasn’t it? God, hilarious. And, even better having read all of the surrounding posts at FDL about yKos in Vegas!!!!!!!
ydj, I copied your last.
(that’s po-lice talk — right, Suz? *g*)
thanks!
Honey?
I’m home!
Siun @ 251
it probably would have been harder if you hadn’t known he was going until he was part way out the door… and especially if it happened with the sense of some unknown conflict with other people you cared about.
just trying to say that this is not a planned bon voyage party – and i can’t pretend it is.

LoudounLib @ 296
me too.
TRex @ 293
KNEW you couldn’t stay away!
Nola Sue @ 287
The Big Muddy’s gonna get ya one way or the other, right? I’ve been her for nearly 10 years, married a Metry boy and am in it for the long haul, come hell or, god forbid, high water.
Watching “Bullitt” and feeling shell shocked…
madmommy @ 299
Have you ever been to the Metry Cafe?
selise, I have extra tissues if you need ‘em *g*
marymccurnin @ 291
Hey, Mary… Clown car! (Still makes me laugh, months later. I told my step-mom — truly her brand of humor, but let her tell my dad. Did I mention I’m in my 40s?) I was a Newmanite, 13 years. How ’bout you?
TexBetsy @ 298
He is probably getting all teary-eyed! *g*
marymccurnin @ 301
Nope. Mandina’s in Mid-City is my all time favorite.
selise @ 295
Selise…I think you nailed it..that is why this whole things gives me a stomach ache
BTW you Kyl/Lieberman time line is much appreciated..digging in the “primary data” I love it..
TRex — haven’t even lurked for quite a while; am so glad fate brought me back tonight so that I could thank you.
You opened my eyes, mind and heart. Thank you.
madmommy @ 300
I hope you didn’t have high water. Such sadness.
(sniff) I’m trying hard not to be sad but I am.
Nola Sue @ 303
Riverdale, ‘67. My siblings went to St. Martins.

Been there. Done that.
LoudounLib @ 294
yeap
(climbing back onto trex’s shoulder) dood, didja bring more tissue?
[delurking]
But I ALWAYS read you last thing before bedtime, TRex! Now it’ll have to be at the new place. Well, it’s already bookmarked. Thank you for all your great posts, including all the music–I found a lot of new music to follow up on through your amazingly wide variety of YouTubes. See you at chez TRex.
LoudounLib @ 302
thanks. *sniff*
Nola Sue @ 308
Nope just wind that took half the roof off. Many others fared much worse unfortunately.
Shell @ 45
Thanx for knowing just what I wanted to ssy, but couldn’t see through the tears to get it up on the screen.
TRex,
Thanks for the late nightapaloozas and posts and great laughs.
I’ll make sure I stop by the new pad.
-GSD
I think TRex waved his magic de-lurking wand as he left and didn’t let the door hit him in the ass.
Wow. Stick my head in to say good evening and TRex is leaving…TRex, my friend I have never met, You have hosted, and provoked laughter and thought, and built a Late Nite community of a most unique and wonderful character, and it has been a very unique time and thing to be a part of. Thank you-and see you at your place.
madmommy @ 315
My parents lost their home. Lived on Belaire Dr. off of Metairie Road. 17th Street canal did em in. I personally hate the army corp of engineers.
madmommy @ 317
Glad to hear it — at least insurance was hopefully helpful with wind damage.
Steve-AR @ 306
you are most welcome. after all, while we can all have our own opinions, we can’t have our own facts. and facts are what help us see through the fuckery (and i don’t care where “fuckery” came from – it was trex who taught me to use it *g*)
TRex @ 295
Dude! (as teh kidz say)
Mary, I’m still laughing about Clown Car.
Wow, TRex, an extraordinary amount of Lurkers de-lurking to bid adieu…!!! 8-)
PS-Teddy don’t take it too personally… *g*
marymccurnin @ 321
Get in line sweetie, it’s long, better bring a snack. The COE is never going to be held accountable in any significant way for the fuckery inflicted on NOLA. But we get to depend on them to do it right this time.
oh for god’s sake.
Wish TRex the best but this is so obviously not about pen posts offending anybody, or about Jane’s love for America.
Who knows what it’s about. Probably personal stuff that is none of anybody’s business. But it seems to me that if there was some grand scheme behind it all, we’d have some additional dignitaries on here this evening to explain it to us.
Alicia @ 325
More fun I have never had.
Uh..you mean like..uh..the “new 5 1/2 feet of flood protection that turned out to be 5″?
Just read eriposte, Steve AR. Most interesting.
SteveAudio @ 323
My son’s favorite expression these days is “awesome possum,” which somehow rhymes.
Dear TRex;
What to say?… I originally visited FDL for the Libby coverage and then became really impressed with the people commenting here… and then I started checking out the other writers… ta-daa! TREX!!
You are a natural. Funny is hard to capture but you got the gift… you might be a snark-whisperer… anyways, it’s been a pleasure thus far… and I hope yer new playhouse isn’t a kinda “no Homers” club wherein ‘Homer = Canadian’… ‘cuz I wanna visit, too!!!
TRex; what can we say?
A sad day for the Lake.
When we’ve mastered the art of time-rambling, we’ll look for you among the giant ferns of the Jurassic.
A heartfelt thank you. :o(
Take care.
marymccurnin @ 330
A Late Nite classic if there ever was one.
madmommy @ 328
Criminal negligence, emphasis on criminal.
marymccurnin @ 330
As a mother of 3, I now use it to describe my lady-bits.
Steve-AR @ 111
Ding!
You guys, I don’t know what to say. I’m seriously getting kind of verklempt here.
Just trust me, IT IS GOING TO BE OKAY. Jane has fun new writers lined up to come in for Late Nites. You’ll all make new friends and everything is going to be just as right as rain, I promise.
Steve-AR @ 330
Now, Steve, lets be fair, I coulda sworn it was six inches not 5 inches… ;-)
Steve-AR @ 330
Fuckery doesn’t even begin to cover it. Go to Levees.org and click on Dr. Seed’s letter but only if you want to go completely mad.
After being away several days, yours were the only posts I would page back to see what I missed. Looking on the bright side, maybe you’ll be less reserved in the new place!
TRex @ 340
Damn straight!
Whoa, whut? Didn’t expect this, I literally double checked to be sure it wasn’t April 1st or something. Aw, man, sorry to see you leaving here. Show up in comments?
I’ve got your place added to my rss feed…
OK, I see Betsy over there with the cookies and cake…crumbs. Better find out what’s left!
Nola Sue @ 323
A year pissed away fighting for half what it cost to fix, then they canceled the policy, the bastards. But I’m not bitter…
TRex @ 340
Thanks, Kisses.
selise @ 323
That is what I like about eriposte at the Left Coaster..data..data isn’t the final answer but it’s a place to start and a lot better than once sentence zingers with nothing behind them.
TRex @ 339
but but but . . . waaaaaaaaaa hiccup
not a knee jerker @ 329
Actually, it’s all about Ann Althouse, just like everything else.
TRex @ 340
we’ll be over in the corner, talking amongst ourselves.
TRex @ 340
We just love you, that’s all :-)
TRex @ 295
Yes you are, just where you belong
Standing with hands on hips…… looking over glasses with the “mothers look” that says if someone is complaining about a TRex post is taking life wayyyyyyyyyyyy too seriously.
And hoping there is a nice safe rope ladder to into your tree house until I am back tree climbing shape
PB, we’re using up all the dinosnacks.
if this were a normal late nite, we’d be snarkin about the baaaaaaad boys in Group News Blog’s post, Trent Lott & the Goat Rumor. Alas, i spose this is the type of thing that gets people’s undies in a bundle.
madmommy @ 286
What kind of cheese?
This sounds like a nummy treat…so long as I limit it to once a year o.O
TRex- did you see that I found the link to one of your fav. FDL posts?
Late Nite FDL: FOUND! The Lost Notebook of Ana Marie Cox
Loo Hoo. @ 331
It was like reading about splitting one strand of hair and getting a detailed description of the differences between two halves. Which might be helpful if one is trying to decide between Hillary or Barack. I do love reading eriposte.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 355
I want it duly noted that I mentioned goats involved in the scandal a full hour before TGNB posted their post. (patting self on back)
TRex!
Best of Luck!
I’ll be visiting Trexstasy to oggle the pile of Gooper bones!
katymine @ 353
Not to worry katy, TRex can scoop you up and lift you safely to the tree house and back down again. How did Elmore enjoy the MNF game? What a dog that was!
Valley Girl @ 357
Yes!
Here’s another.
CTuttle @ 340
I think you are right, it was 6″..I hate giving false info*g*
not a knee jerker @ 329
Is there a thread you don’t try to control?
Not today….
Aw, good luck, T. Moving post, too.
We could set a record tonight.
Okay, gang.
I’m headed backstage to turn the lights on at the new place.
Good night everyone. Ginormous hugs to the big therapod!!
TRex @ 339
you know, i think this is right there with when carson signed off…(and, as noted elsewhere, at least we had lead time for that.)
trex, you don’t know how many good days you made great, and more crucially, how many crummy days you managed to move into the tolerable column for me.
vaya con dios, brudda man.
nite TRex
see you over there
*waving forlornly at the big guy leaving*
Good night madmommy. Take care.
Good night TRex. See you at I AM TRex.
Suzanne @ 359
dang! missed that *ndfg pulls lawn chair up next to Suz* girlfriend, dish!
I love surprises…
TRex @ 350
Oddly, she crossed my mind.
madmommy @ 361
Elmore was predicting a MUD bowl for days… they had laid new sod three days before an ESPN MNF game when it was below 30 just before three days of rain….. Also the funny part of painting the lines and numbers on the field and putting tarps on to cover the field BUT when the tarps were removed just before the game, the paint was on the tarp AND not on the grass
The last two have been pretty bad…
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 373
here
I don’t think any self respecting goat would have anything to do with Trent Lott. A sheep maybe or a athletic sock but not a goat.
Thankyou for all the hard work. Firedogs: it is hard, tough, demanding and extremely difficult work to hang it all on the line night in and night out. To craft a strong, funny response to the hateful nonsense we have been dealing with A. B. ( after bush) is not easy.
David is courageous, industrious, and fucking funny. I and many other junkies will miss him here. I loved the combination of the gentle and brilliant Christie, smoldering Pach., irreplaceable Jane, the quiet and smart moderators, and the other kick ass regulars- we will miss the glorious, incorrect, passionate and bold TRex.
TRex,
Will be there at the new digs with bells on!
“Is there a thread you don’t try to control?
Not today….”
Wow. Didn’t think I was that important.
Sorry. I’ll go start my own blog now.
Loo Hoo. @ 373
I hate surprises…probably goes back to my working days when surprises often lead to complications or death.
G’nite, madmommy. Nite, all.
and…
TRex has left the building
Steve-AR @ 382
Did you work in an ER?
Trex, if you’re still here — it’s late and I’ve got to say good night, but not without first saying thank you for all of your memorable Late Nite posts. I only started hanging out here during the Libby trial, and since that time I’ve recognized that you are a rare talent, IMO, and I have really treasured being able to spend time here and enjoy your work. All of the FDL folks, front-pagers and commenters alike, can’t be beat. But you have that special gift that kept me coming back, night after night.
Thank you again, and see you around your new place!
newtonusr @ 384
But he will be spotted at the Piggly Wiggly soon.
marymccurnin @ 385
OR
marymccurnin @ 387
Yep. In front of the dairy case, I believe.
newtonusr @ 389
chatting up the cute butcher with that special tw*nkle in his eye
Jay Rosen @ 365
Jay! It is so great that you commented on this thread.
You are the reason I discovered FDL in the first place.
WOW! Thank you for all that you do.
That was TOTALLY a joke.
Okay, I’ll see if I can’t come by again soon.
You guys be good!
Love you all.
And that makes it time for me as well. Good nite, all. The best of all possible tomorrows to you all.
Especially you, TRex.
(bows, tucks umbrella under arm, and exits screen left).
Nice new place, T-Rex. Added to my rounds.
new thread
weird, innit?
Ich bin ein firepuppy.
Well TRex, you entered one hot summer late nite with a splash… The least I can do as I say thank you one last time and wave goodnight is leave you with a ripple.
Good luck, TRex. I’ve always enjoyed your posts and will be checking in to see what’s going on at your new spot. As a gay man and as someone whose ideas of justice are not much mirrored in the world I see around me each day, I say: Thanks for speaking up, and I hope you are just getting started!
Suzanne @ 359
Suzanne…. errrr… it actually started yesterday afternoon in comments at GNB.
http://www.haloscan.com/commen…..925/#46135
BUT you should still be patting yerself on the back becuase we can’t have tooooo much fun with these pubbie goat “rumors” :D
marymccurnin @ 365
Nowhere near. I remember a Late Nite where TRex invited folks to delurk that ran over 600 responses before someone put together a Late Late post.
We’ve also had some Late Late Late posts due to overflow, too, as I recall.
OldCoastie @ 396
Yeah…so quiet, you can hear your voice echo around the room…completely empty…hard to believe, all the good times…like everyone’s just around the corner, and will be right back..
(snaps off the light, and gently closes the door).
Steve-AR @ 348
exactly, because there’s always more data to find that may make us rethink our previous views.
Let me guess where everyone has gone…
Delurking to give a fond farewell to the Fabulous TRex. I will visit the treehouse often to keep my snark skills sharpened. Thanks for the insight and laughter and fun you brought to the lake. Had some bad times here in my house lately, and you brightened my mood with each post.
Sure feels good to wiggle my toes in the cool, clean water again. I’ll try to dive in soon.
Please don’t let this happen to Scarecrow.
It’s one of the hardest things to do in blogging: speak to the commenters and write for the lurkers who outnumber the speakers 99 to 1. When they “unlurk” we see what (who) is normally hidden. An event like this brings them out. And why not?
Hi Valley….!
I generally lurk, but the shocking departure of T-Rex pulled me right out of my hidey hole! But….just as I was deep in despair, his tiny forelimbs typed some beautiful words..T-Rex will be blogging elsewhere! My late night delight can still be had! I’m glad for FDL that they are so successful, but sad it can’t stay fun in the late nite!
Jay Rosen @ 407
Jay! Great to hear from you again! It was so totally wonderful that you took the time to give TRex some kind words.
And, I am so impressed that you have the time to keep up with the happenings at FDL, amidst all else you do! Hey, I only have to give 2 more lectures on Animal Behavior, grade the exams, etc. before my semester is “finished”. I don’t have quite the same ambitious program that you do.
Jay, again, it is great to hear from you. I suspect TRex will be swooning after he sees that you have given him such notice. xxooo.
Ann in AZ @ 237
I’m willing to bet my Medicare card that 62 definitely is not too old to both love and appreciate TRex. But I do thank Ann in AZ LooHoo for providing another perspective. Love ya, TRex
*edited upon request to correct attribution of thanks*
Mostly a lurker too TRex but thanks for all the laughs! Happy t(r)ails to you!
Moderator, Help: In msg 410, I meant to thank Loo Hoo for adding another perspective. Can you help?
skeptic, what is the problem (putting on moderator hat)
Strangers waiting, up and down the boulevard
Their shadows searching in the night
Streetlight people, living just to find emotion

skpetic, i think i got it right – do a hard refresh of the page and look at your comment to verify the editing was correct
It has been an honor and a privilege, sir.
Ten…HUT!!!
(dammit, now I’m stuck to my own forehead)
Trex–
I discovered your blogs rather recently but enjoyed your spontanaiety, imagination, and writing skills. I look forward to your new blog.
TRex! Hokey smokes — I get super busy for a few weeks and fly back into the FDL airport, only to discover that the Rex meister will be leaving. What a heartbreaker for those of us who find tiny forearms a total turn-on. But I’ll scurry right over to your new place, although I hate tire swings — the big bullies always pushed puny me into the water. Nope, gimme a comfortable webbed deck chair (pink and black plastic webbing, please) on the banks.
Belated Cheers from the newly liberated land down under. My only excuse is the size of my celebratory hangover. I’ll come and leave cubic droppings at your new place, as a gesture of deep affection too. (Yes, firepups wombat droppings really are cubic…makes me wonder about my rectum too…). Love and cubic things, Wombat.
Bitter-sweet medicine “for a reputation”, can’t we take something else?
Happy trailz and Thanks for the LOLs.
Attack, ATTack, ATTACK!
No kidding, Maurice. I’m away for a little while and look what happens.
TRex, bon voyage, big fella. I’ll catch you at your new place. Blogger isn’t so bad once you get used to it.
TREX! you are the reason I started reading blogs! Don’t get the reason for the move (maybe someone is trying to get in the kos(ugh) slipstream?), but anyway, you will still be a daily habit. Thanks for all the laughs and good luck!
Like you could be replaced………..
I shudder at the thought.
Oscarrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Fly like an eagle Trex-good on ya, I always enjoy what you write and look forward to reading more.
Best to you.
Burnie
A friend of mine has gone for seeking the freedom to be trouble while I have stayed. What hand decides these things why have I been spared should I take warning and take flight before the storm clouds gather for me next?
A break in the clouds does not a Sunny Day make. Is my break in the clouds tempory?
Or is Trex on a secret mission disavowed by FDL? Is he going to now cause more trouble than even NorskeFlamethrower would approve before the election:) Bahahaha!
I think the times have just got very interesting! Things Are Coming Undone! (snark)!
Good luck, TREX. I noticed that in the last book salon I attended that there was a mighty push for “staying on topic”. Right, like the book salons ever stay on topic. They’ve always been a confusing mess. That’s what I love about FDL and blogs in general.
Oh well, I suppose it was inevitable that business decisions would eventually have to be made. If FDL wants to chase guests by providing safe debate environments, then I suppose that’s how it goes.
We’ll have to see whether the all the excitement of a Democratic townhall will carry over to the blogosphere.
Ann in AZ @ 212
What did Lotus do? I liked her Raven and OK Kiddo I hope are just taking a break I’ve been thinking about it .
Sorry Mod I posted twice!
wow, bummer. i’ll be bookmarkin ya over at yer homebase. you’re the bomb baby.
Good Luck, Trex! Like many others here, I’ve enjoyed your late night posts!
If my speculation about Trex being undercover as I said earlier is true then don’t worry Therapod the ravings of a lone commentor will also be disavowed:). Until its to late ATTACK, ATTACK ATTACK!
Already bookmarked T Rex:-) See you there!
This is a great shame. Firedoglake needs TRex’s irreverance as a counterpoint to the other material posted — it is the late night piece, but it is also the hook that gets people to begin reading in the morning (it is certainly where I have begun the day over the last year). TRex may find he needs the counterpoint himself, but he has been the most inspired of all the FDL writers — so this is a great loss.
Just a simple thank you for your contributions. I always got just a little bit excited when I saw you had posted something new. And you never disappointed!
well shit. This is so not the thing I wanted to see when I woke up. Gonna msis ya big guy, and I’ll bookmark your new one.
I’m an infrequent commenter and occasional lurker on LateNite, but here’s what I usually do – I know what I’ve got going in the morning, where I have to be, etc., so I know what time I have to be up. I then the alarm for 1 to 1 1/2 hours earlier, so that I can read your posts and the comments from the night before.
You have a future as a writer dude. The word-smithing, the originality, the humor – you’ve got it all. Onward and upward I guess but I’m still fighting the knee-jerk urge to be a bit angry. See you at your new place – me with a cup of coffee, a Marlboro Red, and a smile.
dmg @ 205
agree. set this blog apart from equally important and serious but never so anti-depressing than late and late late.
Zed! No?
Anyway, I hardly knew ye, but best of luck, kiddo.
Priceless bunny expression-pic on your new site.
TRex,
Best wishes. My fondest memory of you will always be this question: “doesn’t anyone wonder what you’d find on that dress if examined under a black light?” Thanks!
Trex, you are one the best writers ever. I will be following you to your new gig. Thanks for everything
Dear TRex,
I will miss you here so much. Your voice is unique. You are one of the few people who can make me laugh. Please be true to yourself and write your heart out. Of course we will follow you to the new tree house and see what’s the latest. Would a lovely pen be a good housewarming present?
(((((((TRex)))))))
Love and cookies,
egregious
TRex ~ Vaya con Carne…
PEACE!
Thank you, TRex.
I, too, was about to burst into tears at the announcement, but then I saw that we can all follow you to the new address. I hate to see you leave the FDL family, but am sure that you will make your wildest dreams come true. Am usually just a lurker but love FDL, and TRex has always been one of my favorite writers. I can’t believe FDL gets nasty emails about you! Everybody loves a little snark. Everybody here
anyway.
Fare thee well!
See you at the new digs.
At first I was like……..whoa, this can’t be. Then, I realized, this all makes a lot of sense.
You can’t go wrong with an “I AM” statement at the top of your blog….and the bunnies, well, they are beyond smarmy………..LOVED IT!!!
Look forward to checking in daily over at your new place………..you’re wonderful, TRex.
TRex–
Give ‘em hell!
As far as I can tell FDL was meant to be punchy and noisy and pointedly snarky, so I’m sorry to hear that by doing exactly that you think you’ve brought trouble to the team. If that’s what you feel, though, I salute your honor in stepping aside to draw fire away.
All the best in the new place!
Forgot to come back last night an give my good wishes… TRex, all the best to you and your mod squad of fans!!!
Love ya, hon. (Damn my early bedtime last night…) I’ll be expecting a catch up call next time you are ironing…
Trex,
I always read late night in the A.M., so seldom if ever commented. Nevertheless, I just wanted to express my appreciation for your informality, humor, and insight. I’m in my 60’s and this seems to have the attributes of one of those events which you look back upon as having seemed negative at the time, but without which your expanding future could not have occurred.
Anyway, I’m invisioning a cross between Shane and Jurassic Park. “TREX, come back TREX…”
Good luck, TRex. You truly have a gift. Thanks for sharing it.
Guess I’ll have to go elsewhere to find out what set this all off. Damn shame, Trex. You’re my favorite writer south of Matt Taibbi.
Most definitely will read your inspiring prose at the Treehouse!
TRex, I always read your stuff in the morning, so I never comment on your threads, but wanted to thank you for your outstanding wit and writing. I have thoroughly enjoyed your work. Have fun at the tree-house, I’ll be lurking ;)
What kind of fuckery is this?
FDL sure has had its share of growing pains. I guess the first one was moving from blogger to wordpress. In the end it turned out okay. FDL is losing one of the best…addition by subtraction? We’ll see.
Rats, still there…
Was hoping this was a bad dream from that paella last night (that maybe HAS been in the frig longer than I thought). Today I feel sadder but am happier TRex for YOUR graduation.
I am off to my virtual tree house to reflect on this with an old fountain pen, snark and reputation in general, and can’t help but wonder from lack of comment where Jane is on this. Permanent Midnight.
Good lord, I leave the keyboard to spend a little time with the family and look what happens!
TRex, I hardly knew ye, but did so enjoy your posts!! I will always cherish the story of the college football fans and the “special” cookies you served to the ones installed on your front lawn! BWAhahahaha!!!! One of your greatest hits I was lucky enough to catch.
Thanks dino-dude!
dosido
TRex – long time lurker here, huge fan – It’s been great reading your stuff on FDL, and you’ll be missed. Count me in as a subscriber to the treehouse though!
Very late but I’ve been out all day here in the small island, where it is now 5.25pm. You’ll be missed
{{{{{ TRex! }}}}}
Nooo… this ain’t right…
it’s right to give Christy n Jane their props, to be of good will all around, sure, but…
‘n I guess we readers can’t know all the details, but…
but…
The site’s becoming more n more important, as it should, n higher stakes n all, but..
does that mean y’all pups gotta filter everything you say now, be real careful of not stepping on any toes…
homogenize down toward that lump in the center (soggy and inert, like sooo much else that drives politics?…)
i for one look[ed] forward to TRex’s posts as much (or more) than anyone’s (cn i get an ‘amen’ please?)
In fact, I’d like to see the readers consulted… and a strong plus-to-minus ratio should mean reconsidering this….
This is the first _I_ heard about it..
…just ain’t right…
ok I’m done… go ahead, enjoy your farewell party… think I’ll mosey on over to http://trexstasy.blogspot.com/
A graceful exit, TRex. But we always knew you’re a class therapod.
TREX. Even though I lurk an awful lot, I’ve always considered FDL my intellecual, snarky, family. Now that you are leaving, it feels like my loving, snarky, irritating little brother is moving away. I know I can always visit you, but it’s not the same.
Dear TRex, you will be sorely missed. See you at your new spot.
