Clapton, East, and Knopfler creating magic, Toronto ’88
h/t Wildvideoguy
On the eve of Thanksgiving Sunday when half the country is on the road, this feels like the right music. Hope all you pups found some goodness for yourselves, a visit or a great meal or a vacation or some time to think and relax.
As we pick up the reins again Monday it may seem that we’ve lost our way politically. Our confidence is shaken, trust in the government damaged, hope for one political party or another weakened by the cowardice of our elected representatives. How we mourn our innocence, that blind faith in the secure, stable nation we grew up in. Even during Vietnam and Watergate the country did not seem so broken.
Transitions can be difficult to manage, and that’s when everybody is operating in good faith, which seems dubious as we observe the actions and inactions of the nominal leaders in the Democratic Party. Turns out we are the authentic leaders, we are creating a new path for ourselves and inviting others to join us.
I know a little bit about transitions, leaving one home and coast and establishing a new home on the other side of the country. It’s kind of a rollercoaster, the adventures and disappointments, discoveries, more knowledge if not more wisdom.
Once the decision is made to change, there is an inherent momentum whether it be personal or political. We can’t find our way back, but we can work together to find the way ahead.

Hi eg, hi everyone. Was having problems here using IE, switched to Firefox, and still having intermittent problems (no refresh comments button, mainly)
I have lost the refresh comments button also. And, same, after I cleared out my cache.

I was going to say the refresh button is gone, but several someones beat me to it…:)
Still no “refresh comments” and did several hard refreshes.
well, y’all. no way am i spending the next hour hitting the hard refresh. going to take this as my cue to turn in early.

Suzanne @ 28
No such luck.
hard refresh done here 2x, no luck

You guys are standing too close to the mike. That’s creating the echoes.
I may do the same, yet I just can’t resist seeing what happens when I push this button.
smapdi @ 32
Well that worked. Gremlins and magic, I say.
egregious @ 33
LOL!

Hey, I called “can’t find my way home” Wednesday night. Everyone ok? Got EPU’d last thread by reading everything, only about 100 comments behind … sheesh. I see to be a bit frozen here, too, and lost preview…
refresh button never went away here (have i jinxed myself now?)
g4ibook, max os 10.4, safari 3
smapdi @ 32
Hey, that worked — thanks!
youre welcome
browser hung up on something from paypal, incomplete display of page.
worked here. staying up longer.
Suz- I have done hard refresh several times. Both before and after I posted my comment. fwiw, PC FireFox here. A wonderfully new problem for the mods to solve. ;)
VG, hit your stop button seems to fix it (temporarily)
So where were we.
Suzanne @ 47
even worked for the previous thread
Suz- yes, saw comments above, and hit stop button. Can now see refresh comments button. thx
Well I think I shall head off to bed. Take care and enjoy the snark. I continued to wage war on capitalism by not spending a cent today. BTW left over turkey makes great curry.
The refresh button doesn’t appear in Konqueror.
sleep well dr dick
g’night DrD, I too enjoyed some leftovers that I brought back from Richmond…garlic mashed potatoes, stuffing, turkey, and cranberry chutney. Yum!
That was either fast or Konqueror is kinda goofy!
tech guys wanna know if anyone is still having troubles?
DrDick @ 51
Best ever DrD. Don’t forget Bridget Jones and her Mom’s turkey curry party!
NytolNite all.not anymore Suz (crossing fingers)
Nope, air bubble seems to have passed.
Ahh the stuff of dreams, dream content not included.

Suzanne @ 56
my back still hurts, kids still bicker all the time, job doesn’t pay enough …. oh, about the refresh button! no, all is fine.
g’night jayt
Is this requiring major surgery? Is it still alive? The tubes? Pulse?
Thank the goddess that we have EG here tonight. She the doctor! Perfect song to go with the post that makes me think positively, at least for tonight…
I’m not seeing any problems at the moment…?
sleep well JayT
All well here, Suzanne.
Suzanne @ 56
not after I hit the stop button.
But, this may not be a full test. I’ll close the thread and bring it up again, and see what happens.
TeddySanFran @ 1
Congrats on the zed Teddy! The one and only Teddy—I notice your comments didn’t duplicate.
All is working as it should. Weak link unpatched user.
(exhaling)
now where were we? oh yeah – EG!
Hey jayt, aloha oe, goodnight.
Suzanne @ 56
Seems to be good now. Thanks!
egregious @ 69
That must mean he’s the one who broke it.
To the journey together!
Dang, I always arrive late. Too much partying last night I guess, but you don’t hurl your stinky right-wing government to the curb every day.
Suzanne @ 71
Yes, where were we?
Here’s a little entertainment to go with the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend.
I found this Vancouver Film School animated short on YouTube called “Little Jimmy Liked to Jump.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..re=related
It is a cautionary tale about a little boy who enjoyed jumping into puddles with his boots despite the advice from his elders.
Do you think it was meant as a political commentary on our own Little Boots jumping into puddles that are too big for him?
congrats persi! the good guys won!
Well here’s a collection of good souls on a Saturday night.
Hi all!
Oh yes transitions, Hmm some what like the journey of a thousand miles or to the mail box begin with a single step. But its handy to pick a direction as well.
hi persi! Such good news from your part of the world…congrats on throwing the bum out!
hi nate.
Yes congratulations, Persi.
Nate!
How goes the Charlie Brown campaign? Is that what you’re working on most at present?
waving at Nate from the Sunday morning section *g*
Hey, Nate! Whatcha been up to? Haven’t seen you around for how long…?
Suz- okay, I closed out the thread, cleared my cache too, and I am back. Seeing the refresh comments button w/o hitting stop. So, the burp appears to have passed. Unless this turns out to be a double comment.
about time the bad guys lost a big one – yeah persi!
Nate @ 80
Hi Nate!
egregious @ 72
Uhoh, I know that… Just finished making/eating Turkey ala king, the first of the leftovers…
hey nate – how ya doing? whatcha doing? you still CA or back to HI?
Loo Hoo. @ 64
Hey thanks Loo Hoo :)
Everything seems to be OK now.
persiflage @ 76
Heh, and the bum lost his own seat too! Good Job, Mateys! 8-)
argosfalcon @ 81
I dunno, i’ve always been fond of the journey itself. I like having a home base, but in the end? The journey’s the thing.
PERSIFLAGE!!! Such grand congratulations to you and all Aussies! And to the world. Bush can’t pretend this didn’t happen.
If the Australians that I have met in my limited travels are indicative, you have all been good will ambassadors to the world. Your voice is respected!
In other news … Friedman is still an idiot.
persiflage @ 76
Persi! Congratulations, and would you *please* tell us how the heck you guys kicked the bastards out, so we can do it too?
Understand you were pretty happy in the victory thread this morning. Snoopy Dance and everything.
burnspbesq @ 98
And he’s still one name on a long list of idjits.
egregious, you are a gifted bringer of tranquility. It’s much appreciated here.
persiflage @ 76

Congrats, Persi! When will it be determined whether Mr. Brown loses his own seat (so to speak)?
Just before I was left in the weeds (Late Night) Jukebox was mentioned … (I was WAY behind). If anyone wants to roll with this it would be fun. If not, any suggestions?
TexBetsy @ 74
Not a chance – Teddy is a creator – incapable of breaking anything much less the fdl tubes. ‘~)
got several tubes front paged over at my place if anyone is interested in what i’m listening to
Great post egregious. Wavin’ at everyone…!
I haven’t been working with Charlie’s campaign lately e. Unfortunately I’m a victim of our health care system so I’ve had to sell my soul to the company store for a little while to insure my health. I’ve been doing some local volunteer stuff as well but not much politic’ing of late. Charlie’s got a crack staff and an army of loyal supporters. They occasionally shoot me a request for some web outreach and a bit of research now and then but they’ve got things well in hand. Right now they’re campaigning for the general against a yet unnamed opponent. No way Doolittle goes again.
Besides… It looks like I’m going to be moving to L.A. for a while.
Re: the broken POLITICAL PROCESS….what the hands of one man, or group of men, can damage the minds of many can repair.
And as the vast sweep of the universe is my witness I will not rest until the corrupt traitors in the Democratic Party are driven from it to expire in the political wilderness. The likes of ‘The Rabbit’ Emmanuel, Schumer, Clinton, Penn, Reid, Joe the Liearman and all the rest of the centrist, corporatist scum who now infest it shall not be suffered to remain within the Party of FDR, JFK, no nor Truman neither.
They shall be expelled so do I swear!
Take this solemn oath with me and together we shall take back our party, our government our nation for all those who live here without the benefit of being in the upper .1 of 1 per cent in income.
All those who desire no more than life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
We are America and we will not be denied!
Good morning,
I saw this very show a day before in Montreal. The ticket is dated october sixth 1988. Twenty four Canadian dollars. What great memories.
Thanks Egregious.
Thanks all. It’s a strange feeling. Our new Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, isn’t what I’d call progressive but he has the distinct advantage of not being John Howard. I guess I feel the way you might if, next year, a Democrat wins the Presidency, and that Democrat is Hillary.

Good cajun too. Goodnight Dr…Dick.
yes the journey is the thing, but when we return to where we started, we are changed or is it the place we have returned to (yes I know it could be both). Damn these holiday cards they have given me a bad case of Hallmark(tm).
persiflage @ 76
Oh yes, sounded like good news. What’s the new bloke like? I only know that he’s not Howard, which is plenty reason to celebrate in of itself from what I’ve heard…
persiflage @ 109
Congrats, persi!
So, what is Rudd going to do with Chimpy?
I imagine the Administration is sending a minion over there now to twist arms…

You SAW this show?? Oh man. You are so lucky. Can I have your autograph?
CTuttle @ 95
Not quite yet but it’s awfully close. We’ll have to wait for postal and prepolls to be counted. They could be as many as 15,000 votes so there’s a chance Howard could still win his seat, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Suzanne @ 105

If only we had realised earlier that all it took was a viable opponent, we could have done this years ago. To explain, since losing the election of 96, the Labor Party has had a series of leaders who just didn’t inspire the public. Good people, one and all but the sort of people you’d hate to get stuck next to in a plane. 9/11 didn’t help either because it scared people and scared people don’t want to change things.
Earlier this year Kevin Rudd became leader of the Labor Party and, boom, suddenly the popularity of the Party skyrocketed. We’d always resented Howard’s parsing and word-tricks. He was a liar, we all knew it, but there wasn’t really an alternative.
Enter Kevin Rudd, young, fresh-faced, an experienced diplomat and Chinese-speaker and suddenly all that past resentment had somewhere to focus. Goodbye John, c’mon down Kevin.

It is going to be a hoot – been scooping out highly visable freeways, state and county high traffic overpasses – all high traffic especially morning and evening – all over the Monterey Peninsula – and tourist packed traffic on weekends. As soon as I connect with the FwyBlogger we can set a date so stay tuned for updates. Mr.brat said he’d man the home fires and make us all a celebratory feast.
That’s all I got for you tonight, pups. Unless you need a third late nite! Good grief, 200 comments and the night is young.

hey et, tis 40 right now – not as cold as last night. but you are colder than me tonight.

seems to happen to everyone who eats turkey. someone outta do a study or something persi – they claim it is something called trip-toe-fan but that just sounds plain made up to me (/snark)
Suzanne @ 220
33 F here right now. It was a bit colder up at the pass. Last night clouds covered the moon, but it was spectacular tonight. No camera, so no pics…
we have clear skies so no cloud cover to help keep us warm, et. we ended up at 29.5 for a low last nite and bailey the skittish cat was in bed with me and token. not quite cold enough for her to get under the covers … yet.
Suzanne @ 221
I’m no fan of tripping over your toes. If, however, your toes are tripping the rest of you should demand equal access.
From time to time I try to figure out how American women got themselves roped into 4 big events in the space of a couple of months (Holloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years). Maybe the turkey thing is to make sure you get some rest.
perhaps all that snow addled the founding fathers, persi. the fact they sure weren’t paying attention to anything the founding mother’s had to say on the scheduling is readily apparent.

And that the founding mothers didn’t work outside the home and the founding children were a source of free labor. Plus they didn’t have to be ferried to music practice, ballet classes and the mall. Those founding mothers had it easy!
Here’s some wonderful news directed in your direction, persiflage.
of course the founding mothers had it easy. it was before men invented all those labor saving devices (laughing)
Great news for Persiflage…and the rest of the world.

LA Times blog
Backers of a California initiative that could significantly aid the next Republican presidential nominee said today they’re still collecting signatures to qualify it for the state’s ballot in June, terming as premature reports that they have wrapped up the process.
“The goal is to be completed by Dec. 1,” Mike Arno, the contractor heading the signature-gathering effort, told The Times’ Dan Morain.

Fred Thompson points out that the paradise isn’t some place with angels playin’ harps and singing in heavenly choruses….neither is it a place where he can enjoy 49 large busted, blond virgins (or a box of raisens)
Saturday Freddy called his trip down an aisle of rifles, shotguns and pistols at a Gun Show “a day in paradise” and wistfully hoped that he would soon be ridin’ shotgun with Jesus on that great stagecoach in the sky!
Loo Hoo. @ 149
Interesting…as was the ratios presented. Only Biden used the term Bipartisan more than Progressive. Kucinich, Richardson and Edwards used Progressive at very high ratios over bipartisan. Now what do these three share that the others do not?
None of those three are current members of the Senate. The Senate is sometimes referred to as the more “deliberative” body in Congress and thus members would tend to try to work for compromise more than a House member. Edwards is now unfettered with his Senate position, which was actually quite “bipartisan” in terms of legislation and voting record. And the test would be Mike Gravel…another former Senator…who never speaks of bipartisanship (but wasn’t measured because he never gets air time in the debates).
From this it’s clear that only Biden would seem to be “uncomfortable” with the use of the term “progressive”. Clinton, Dodd and Obama clearly prefer to use the identifier “progressive” but at the same time do use the concept “bipartisan” on occaision.
It was interesting on the other side that almost none used the term bipartisan – all were clearly targeting the Conservative ideologues…which is an odd rhetorical flourish when one is, and is likely to remain, the minority party in Congress. One would think that THEY would be advocating a more adaptive approach, particularly if they were trying to draw independents and disenchanted Republicans back to support them. It seems that they are all trying to grab some bit of a rapidly diminishing pool of voters who will turn out in the Primaries.
I recall that during the 2000 elections one of the hallmarks of Bush’s campaign was his supposed willingness to work across the aisle as Governor…that he was both a bipartisan…and a “compassionate Conservative”. While he was a real phony it was interesting that the rhetoric was entirely different in this campaign. Presumably this may be because Bush was trying to attract the “Reagan Republicans” that were economic and military cons, but not so much interested in the social issues. He also wouldn’t be corned into saying he was “anti-Abortion” – always using code words to describe his beliefs (e.g. “a culture of life”).
burnspbesq @ 151
Yeah…but I can understand the caution. This is pretty much anecdotal right now,. If the usage was so dramatic that the PTSD symptoms disappeared entirely then I’d be shouting that it be tested more broadly. But it was a temporary effect, and would require consistent treatments.
But it’s worth a wide double-blind study over a couple of months…with a caution to the possibility of other unexpected health issues emerging. There’s also the very real risk that such drugs become widely available to those who have no reason to take them. Ifv the Iraq War brings home tens of thousands with PTSD then treatment with these might mean that an epidemic is released on young people.
So along with the study of the standard ecstasy, alternatives with similar effects to suppress the PTSD but without the sensations desired by clubbers might be sought.

Maybe…but I was watching the results and McKew’s lead increased throughout the evening. With about 64 per cent of the vote counted, ALP opponent Maxine McKew had 45.7 per cent of the vote, against Howard’s 45 per cent. But later, when 76% of the vote had been counted her lead had grown to a 6% difference (52% – 46%).
One can’t easily use the prior absentee results in this district as it has been realigned since the last election. But if the voters are expats and travellers all I can say that most of those that went out to the Aussie bars in Singapore. London, and Bali seemed to be going mad over the Labour victory. And apparently a record number of these folks voted in the embassies…votes that have yet to be tabulated and counted.
And one final point in McKew’s favor. The minority parties that don’t win seats are “redirected” to second choice parties. They most likely will swing towards McKew. These are currently only 2% of the vote in Bullaroon, but could make the difference.
Howard has to win a substantial amount of the remaining precincts, a disproportionate number of the absentee and foreign vote, AND get the second votes of the minority party voters.
Bullaroon…Agggh! I meant Bennelong. And here’s the likely reason that even the absentee ballots will go McKew’s direction.

Hey Elliott,
Thanks for the Washington Journal update. I think I would watch more often if I knew what was on when.

Let’s get other pups involved more. Being better informed is a start, then teaching others.

Thanks,
I don’t know how I’ll recognize your voice when you do call in, you’ll have to say how EGREGIOUS this all is or something.
btw
when do you ever sleep?
mornin’ all!
Good morning, pups. Mr. Friedman is alone in the NYT today, talking about mingling. He says it seems to him that if the Middle East could use more of anything these days it is more mingling — if not between the sexes then at least between the sects.
