Because we all could use a pretty picture, especially with winter setting in!
This was taken at a lake near where I live. It was a lovely day in June, the sky was blue, and I wanted to capture the golden light of the sun on the water and the lily pads. Didn’t quite pull it off, but I think you can see what I was trying to preserve in pixels.
The bucolic look is deceptive: You can’t tell it from the pic, but right behind the photographer is a four-lane road, and the whole scene is not far at all from the “bad” part of town (which really isn’t that bad). I really should go out and take a winter version of this scene, but I think I’ll wait for snow to be on the ground.
What pretty things are in your lives lately?

hey PW!
guess everybody’s still baking cookies downstairs…
Goin’ to get the HUGE christmas tree today!
Good morning Phoenix Woman!
And for a less pretty picture, my Latest FaBlog: You’re So Vague
Well, it’s LA with a Santa Ana wind, so Malibu is on fire again, which isn’t exactly good from my point of view. But maybe it’s God burning the Godless, so if I were Xtian, would make this news wonderful. You choose.

The godless? In L.A.?
Surely you jest.
jayt,
Have you told downstairs that there’s a new thread up? After all, with the glory of the zed comes the task as well…
Beautiful pic, kid. Celebrated my 53rd b-day last night, out dancing and singing. The band at the local bar let me sit in for a solo acoustical set during their first break, and on my third song the band’s bass player and drummer came back in and joined me to finish it out. Way cool birthday bash for me.
I’m thankful Thanksgiving is over. Now just let me make it through the Xmas season, and I’ll be all right.
Winter’s settin in pretty cold up here in north Californey (Quincy, Plumas County, check it out on a map, come visit me some time, just ask around down at the Plumas Club, they’ll tell you how to get hold of me, that’s my real name in the post), but it’s just gorgeous up here in the Sierra Nevada mountains. No snow yet, but it’s comin.
Glad to be a Firepup with all you great people (and even the occasional troll — you know who you are…)
Feeling better every day. Y’all have a fine one. 2008 spells BushCo’s last croak. Let’s not let him have it all his way. Keep on progressin’, you progressives!
Good Morning Phoenix Woman.
We cut our own spruce yesterday and will deck the 8 footer today. Our new kitten and her birthday child(our Peanut just turned four)are giggling and playing under the tree.
Life is good!
Yeah, us godless majority, who depend on reality for our facts, not some big daddy in the sky (or Washington).
I’m trying to think of some godless thing I did yesterday to bring this on, but honestly I just stayed home. Maybe it was a stray, impure thought.
Please pardon the OT, from CNN, undocumented border crosser saves 9 year old boy after mother crashes van in desert and dies.
Edit: and the undocumented border crosser is then arrested.
Forrest Prince @ 9
Happy belated birthday. sounds like it was just the one you wanted.

Good morning!
Thanks for the Breaking News post, by the way! Most excellent!

I saw that! That was sadly all too believeable.

Maybe this will put a human face on the issue rather than Tancredo crap.

Happy Birthday Forrest Prince!!
on the very rare day i’m able to see the ocean from my new home. today is such a day.
but amid the beauty a thick smoke is moving in, obscuring the horizon. my tv confirms new fires in malibu. many homes lost, many endangered.
my hope that no one is hurt and containment comes quick.
Good Morning (noon-ish here).
Yesterday was, and looks like today will be, stunningly beautiful late autumn days. It’s my favorite season. It’s cool and dry. The sky is so deep blue you can almost swim in it, and the last remnants of orange and yellow leaves are blowing from the trees.
Normally this happens in early November, but that’s global warming for you.
Happy (somewhat belated) Thanksgiving all.
Good Morning PW, what a lovely picture to gaze at!
ps I digg it ;)
Happy Birthday Forrest Prince!
tough timing for getting the most out of a birthday. sounds as if you did well indeed ;->
Gee, Forrest Prince, you live in California’s empty quarter! It looks wonderful on the map, tho, nice and green. I hope you get the rain/snow you need this winter.
Hey Forrest Prince,
Happy birthday!
P.S. Are you really a prince? We were just talking about one of the pups being a princess.
Can we send the border crosser some cash?
Jim Clausen @ 16
Yup, I read that too. I wondered how the alarmists would fit that in to their worldview.
Sadly, I suspect I know the answer: they’ll ignore it and continue spewing hate and venom.
Phoenix Woman @ 14
Wow, thanks. I feel like Picasso is telling me that my little fingerpainting is nice :) I wanna write like you when I grow up.
Elliott @ 20
Thanks!
I know everyone has seen this by now but the best

I spend a fair amount of time at Lake Almanor. Lake Almanor and Lassen Volcanic National Park are about my favorite places to be on the planet earth (PSSST!!!… Don’t tell anyone!!!).
The most delightful picture in the world.
BobbyG @ 32
not really
This is my beautiful image of the day.
We have a semi-new kitty. Our house backs up to the woods and many wild critters live there including feral cats. Our cat, Ben, made friends with this kitty. He lives in our garage and has found a comfy place to sleep in a barrel of old clothes. Over the last month he has gone from frantic rushing from the garage to hanging fairly close to the food bowl as I feed him. Today he almost let me touch him. He is totally black which usually means part siamese and has huge bat like ears. I think he is about a year old. We have been calling him shadow since all we saw of him for a long time was a black blur. Now we are trying to come up with his “real” name. I suggested Frank but Ron didn’t like it. I like to give kitties and doggies real names.
Hi PW!
Very nice picture. And description. You touched on something I try to do to stay on a semi-level keel. Beauty and good things are all over the place if you look and, especially, nurture them, protect them, restore them. But that takes work, constant vigilance, work, inspiration and cooperation – not necessarily in that order. If someone does something nasty to you, do NOT pass it on. Do something nice for the very next person you meet.
In that vein, tainted slightly by snark:
HOW the bloomin’ HEQQ did the msm ever come to decide that the boosch-cronie-crowd are the “Values Voters”?!?!
I personally vow to do all I can to re-educate them on the subject, every chance I get. And, yeah, rover better not raise his dome while I gots the mallet in my fist instead of my “be-nice” button! -pffft-
I’m celebrating failure today.
Bush failure to invade Iran. Bush failure to regulate teh internets, Bush failure to keep progressives quiet and disorganized, Bush failure to convert the world to Xtianity, Bush failure to keep the fog of rhetoric thick enough to fool all the people, Bush failure to stop some investigations in congress, Bush failure to keep the brush properly cut down in Crawford…
Hey Mary Mc,
Good to hear about your new kitty. Looking forward to seeing you again when I move.
egregious @ 37
Yes indeedie. We could meet in the middle in Berkeley. I have many secret and wonderful places to see in the east and north bay. I will share.

marymccurnin @ 42
Mondo rather than mono.
eCAHNomics @ 41
Of course. I just wanted folks to have to think about it for a bit.
Adie@35
you have very good advice, not always easy to follow when living in the big city. I try to use the beach and ocean as my “source” but I can hardly reach the place (I live about 3 miles from it). When I can get there through the crowds, it costs about $15 to park. The bus works to get there usually, but then the beach is so crowded and litter-covered, I wonder why I bothered. I usually spend my time there picking up trash, and trying to avoid floating gum wrappers and human hairs in suntan oil slicks if I venture into the “Pacific”.
marymccurnin @ 34
Interesting that you say that black cats are ofte part Siamese. We have been taking cats and kittens out of a local feral colony and either placing them or winding up with them ourselves. We recently got three — one by one over time as they could be caught — all of which are black with a gorget, and they are ‘the most beautiful ugly cats’, with big ears, strange proportions, long noses, and so on. One was sitting sideto and I thought, “That cat is part Siamese”, but I had no idea that black cats in general might have Siamese genes.
Can you add any other information? (BTW: small cats rocketing around the hallway that used to be flea-ridden and terrified is as pretty a sight as I have to offer to the thread.)
dakine01 @ 44
Jeebus, I thought you meant the character from Sanford and Sons.
The pictures of this place are great:Incredible!
dakine01 @ 44
When my son was young & we drove back & forth to the country every weekend, or to Hunter or VT to go skiing, I was constantly searching for audio material for the ride. Round his age 8, I cme across tapes of The Shadow & of the radio programs for Sherlock Holmes. He became a real addict for awhile. I listened to The Shadow every Sunday (iirc) night while I was growing up. The sound of creaky doors opening is grilled into my brain.
behindthefall, saved kitties are indeed one of the world’s beautiful sights. Thanks for sharing, y’all.

re teh internetz: some item I read yesterday referred to a security warning in Maryland — can’t dredge up the link. However, the justification, which made my spine go cold, was that (paraphrasing from memory, here) lone actors might have been radicalized by internet content. Somewhere there are agents monitoring lefty blogs and imagining the very worst.
Loo Hoo. @ 51
Like totally.
Loo Hoo. @ 51
Of course! I hope to meet all the west coast firepups.
behindthefall @ 53
I take that as a given.
eCAHNomics @ 41
(i was trying to figure out how the heck that story parallelled the ned lamont campaign)
behindthefall, I don’t know where I got that info about black kitties. My sister is the official cat woman in the family. Maybe she told me. I just read that Siamese cats used to be almost black. And black cats seem to have that sleek skinny look, too. Or maybe it is just a family myth.
Gosh, I haven’t been to Berkeley for 25 years. Sounds fun! We’ll have to have a round-up.
Good morning from the west coast! *blink, blink* Coffee’s ready.
Hey, Howard got voted out in Australia. That’s a good start to the day.
eCAHNomics @ 49
There were/are also some pulp novels as well. Although to be totally honest, I think my first exposure might have come from an early Bill Cosby routine.
BobbyG @ 56
Yea, like we are all going to go out and VOTE!
Scary!
I would like to say hello to all of the agents huddled around a computer monitor somewhere trying to figure out what the black cat reference really means.
TheOtherWA @ 60
Not only out of the Prime Minister’s office but it’s looking like out of Parliament altogether.
This is a sunrise pic I took. It’s serene but considering the wind that it took to create the effect, forbidding as well.

..lovely…
I have to go take Wally the Best Dog Ever out for his walk in the woods. Someone spotted a mountain lion a week ago several blocks from my house. Yikes. This is the first time I have had the courage to go back there. See you guys later. I hope.
I read that too but can’t refind it. My memory is that they didn’t have any information that would lead to believing there might be an attack for issuing the warning (it’s related to the Israel-Palestine summit at Annopolis), but just a general idea that they ought to keep scaring people. Did see someone verbiage about radicalization but don’t remember that it was related to leftie blogs.
Muzzy @ 64
Very nice!

eCAHNomics @ 67
It used the phrase ‘internet content’. Whether they were referring to those Islamofascist sites that are everywhere these days and impossible to get out of your mind *g* or to lefty-blogs, I don’t know. Both worries would be pretty paranoid, well on the way to ‘nuts’.
I’d like to bicycle to the beach, but my knees couldn’t take it, I’m afraid. I’ve found a great retirement place to move to, tho, in about 2 years. In California, very cheap for a few acres, and a food growing area. A bit too hot, but I’ll take it.
behind@53, nutty people can be “radicalized” by anything, even prayer. The innernets aren’t to blame, but the government might want to make us think so. We’ll have to counter their arguments “with great viggah” but we’re up to it.
behindthefall @ 53
Well duh, that let’s us off the hook—we’re a blog *community*. But let’s welcome the agents anyway, and offer them some lovely Christmas cookies?

Nice little dusting of snow here in Fargo. Best get some lights up before the real thing falls.
I hear that “August Rush” is a sweet and mushy feel-good movie for the family. Is that what you’re looking for, eCAHN?
Such relief! Bush will be involved in mid-east peace talks on Tuesday.
Of significance, Bush will personally participate in the Annapolis conference, which might be read as a signal for his support of Condi’s attempts at peace-making over Cheney’s attempts to foment war. And it surely will give whatever discussions occur real emphasis.
eCAHNomics @ 81
Kinda filmy? Try rinsing again.
Yeah, Bush is imagining he can solve the Israel/Palestine question in his last ten minutes in office. I heard that nobody else knows what the heck the conference was called for.
itwasntme @ 83
No thanks. Single older woman, done with family. But thanks anyhow. Something serious would be just fine.
BobbyG @ 56
There are any number of internet sources for very detailed bomb-making information. I would consider law enforcement to be derelict in its duty if it weren’t monitoring traffic on those sites. Of course, they might find that most of the folks visiting such sites from IP addresses in the US are the Malkinites and the regular commenters at LGF, but that’s still useful information.
Starbuck – Yes, there’s several of us Oregonians here, which is good to know. I have some pretty good pics of Mt. Hood for when unusual conditions occur.
eCAHNomics @ 81
a major release but I LOVED “american gangster”
itwasntme @ 45
I think I understand. I don’t do very well in cities, but sometimes it works wonders for my inner spirit just to do a kindness which brings a responding smile on a stranger’s face. That’s enormously refreshing to me.
I am sorely stressed these days by what seems basically to be a mass epidemic of “road rage” (ethologists might call it “redirection”) all over the place, wherein, people get so frustrated by problems in their daily lives, they tend to retaliate against all the wrong targets.
A long, muddy sentence there, sorry. But the “road rage” concept sums it up pretty well.
Rover is a master at using this phenomenon to get his opposition to attack each other instead of tackling real problems with humane and productive solutions. And, of course, he’s become rich in the process. How nice for him.
Chaininny actively extorts and abuses and maims by roverian means but usually by proxy, plus using any other secret weppon he can lay his slimy hands on, whether for personal gain or just for the heqq of it – seems to make no difference.
Boosh just can’t be bothered to care about anything or anyone, except to lash out in vicious ways whenever it suits his fancy. A born-again-bully, conveniently hiding behind his enablers protectors.
I keep telling myself, sometimes having to use admittedly tortured logic, that I absolutely REFUSE to hate these people, but I DO hate what they are doing. Feel free to add a big IMHO to each of the personality descriptions above, since they are merely my own cheap-shot gut-feelings, and perhaps carry no particular weight of truth.
More easily demonstrated, the level of damage to our one-and-only world caused by these few monstrous personalities is absolutely enormous and, at the moment, quite incomprehensible for me.
I do not expect to see the end of it in my lifetime. But I will try to help clean up as best I can while I am here.
Seeing similar intentions and far greater talent than my own percolating all through FDL, thereby producing synergy, cheers me too my core.
Deep thanks to all. ;->
AZ Matt @ 48
Wow
Here’s another pic consistent with this time of year given the fresh snow on the mountain. There’s nothing too unusual about this particular pic but I like the plume of snow twisting off the top of the peak and the pure blanket of white above timberline.

They’ll go…”The woman was likely forced off the road by the illegal immigrant. Good thing that there was law enforcement along the border or else the kid would have died, too. And his Mom might have survived if there was only thousands more police, military and militiamen along the border.”

Dammit, I lived in Palo Alto for 60 years. Where were all you people?
Just to get even, we have a lake a block away from us, and with a few creative camera angles, I can make it look like it’s in the middle of nowhere…..as long as you can’t hear any sound, because the sound you’ll hear is the sound of Route 36 4 lanes with a big grass median and a lot of traffic going to a race track. But we don’t live in the part of Jersey that has all the oil and gas stuff. We live “down the shore.” Whatever the hell that means. I don’t know. I want to go home. Oh, wait, I am home.

And if you’re ever in a mood for a quiet little film, buy “proof.” Anthony Hopkins, Gwenyeth Paltrow, and a couple of others. Like I say. Quiet, but really a nice literary piece.

Wow indeed. It reminds me a little of this place in Poland (which I have seen in person), but much more colorful and sort of cheerily pantheistic.
Adie, I like what you wrote about not hating people. Hatred is bad for the soul. You are taking the high road, and it’s not easy.

The Sable Burmese are the Black cats that are related to the Siamese. The also come in a blue (greyish), and a champagne variety. The latter really shows the relationship with Siamese in the coloration, although they lack the blue eyes of the Siamese.

Is there a Congressman today or not because of Thanksgiving?
cinnamonape @ 105
But that was a revised announcement that removed the stuff about the threats being from “homegrown” or domestic sources.
Here’s an article based on the original Homeland Security Press Release
Interesting to compare them…and note the CYA by the spokeswoman. The original was released “in an excess of caution”.
egregious @ 101
I beg to disagree just a tad. I think I’m taking the easier path, because hatred is truly corrosive to the hater. Besides, I feel free to tease, mock & belittle … heh. Ain’t no saints in this house.
I was just enjoying your comments about bravely going on about your business quite openly in Russia, whether or not anyone’s watching. You say it’s easier that way. Kudo’s to you.
Another: honesty is so-o-o-o much easier than trying to keep your lies straight. Just ask libby, rover, their brethren & their bosses.
Dang the MSM tho. I wish they’d make up a few charts like Marcy’s, or just use hers, to talk some truth & justice one a these days.
cinnamonape @ 107
Misquoted her…I actually made her statements about their original release sound less CYA than it actually was…here’s what the DHS spokeswoman actually said:
So…IOW let’s get everyone all paranoid about ” the threat of the lone-wolf terrorists, including individuals radicalized by homegrown extremist groups or Internet content.” Keep your eye out for those “foul-mouthed fem-bloggers.
Thanks PW. FWIW, prior to your joining FDL, Christy (more than Jane iirc) often would post beautiful paintings at the top of her posts. Even the art challenged such as me could appreciate. I remember Vermeer and some impressionists. I just offer that, because I have nothing better to contribute to the thread and if you’re ever casting about for a visual to accompany a post, that info might come in handy.
OT, I left a link at the bottom of the previous thread. It’s just my private rant about Iraq stories the NYT’s ran yesterday and today. I didn’t want to sully this nice thread with such vile stuff, but I know FDL likes to be kept abreast of the latest MSM debaucheries. IMVHO, this one certainly qualifies.

The Senate’s in Pro Forma session (meaning that someone opens and closes the session every so often so that no recess appointments can be made).
And yes, but I think the pipeline would be cost-prohibitive. ;)
We’re dealing with water shortages here (in NC) too, but not quite so bad as Atlanta’s. There are all sorts of ideas on the table, though desalination is the only foolproof one (in that we won’t run out of ocean anytime soon). If we go that route, then ideally it should use as much solar power as possible (a good app for solar thermal). It could even happen; we’re not quite as dinosaurian as some of the other red-leaning states.
cinnamonape @ 109
Thinking paranoid for a moment. Perhaps the focus on “lone wolves” is a prelude to harassment of individuals for unspecified classified reasons?
Anyway;
I will be putting this aside for a while – I’m taking my daughter to the park. Have a great day all!

i think the sable burmese are related to black cats in the same way that the seal siamese is.
genes are for coat color only:
black cats are self colored and non-agouti (aa). seal siamese are black cats homozygous for the siamese allele of the albino series (c superscript s). sable burmese is a black cat homozygous for the burmese allele of the albino series (c superscript b).
the four different base coat colors: seal, chocolate, blue and lilac depend on the combination of alleles for two different genes: black/brown and nondilute/dilute.
want more details? shall i include tonkinese which combine these genetic variations for a total of 12 different coat colors? *g*
sorry no links – reference is roy robinson’s “genetics for cat breeders, 3rd ed”

My pretty picture is verbal & is more a snapshot of the way life used to be in many places (& I am so grateful that we are still able to live this way)
This morning Rick & I walked to a local restaurant for breakfast, then stopped by our local pharmacy (which sells a bit of everything) for nails. Then we walked back to the center of town to our local market to pick up a paper & then spent about a half hour chatting with neighbors on the steps of the market. I adore living in our small town.

Hi Cassie – it’s just that between reading the posts & all the comments, I barely have time to comment in a thread before everyone switches over to the new thread. And I can’t understand how everyone else seems to have time to read everything AND comment. Maybe I just spend too much time thinking about everything. ;-)
SnarKassandra @ 133
Yep, we’re FB friends but you’re right, we rarely overlap on FDL (& I don’t comment much anyway since I usually end up EPU’d).
