Congressman Mark Udall is giving up his House seat to run for the U.S. Senate, a race he is favored to win. His district, the 2nd, centered in Boulder, is the second bluest in an increasingly blue-tinted state. In 2004 and again in 2006 the Republicans fielded a candidate who managed to wind up with 30% of the vote. Bush wound up with 41% in 2004. I’m sure the Republicans will find some chump to run next year but it won’t be a race anyone takes seriously.
The serious race is the Democratic primary. There are 3 candidates: Joan Fitz-Gerald, Jared Polis, and Will Shafroth. It’s a very hot, contentious race and the local blogs, like our pals at Square State and Colorado Confidential are all over it.
Early on I was barraged — as was Jane — by Jared Polis partisans. Even though he’s a multimillionaire, he has been painted as the grassroots guy, very much independent of the Inside the Beltway power structure. The same conventional wisdom portrayed Joan Fitz-Gerald, the former State Senate president, as the Establishment candidate and Will Shafroth as the also-ran. All their positions seemed suitably progressive and we decided to just give the district a pass, leave it to the residents who know a lot more about each of the candidates than we do, and hopefully endorse the best man or woman against whatever extremist dog the wingnuts puke up. Let em skip to the end of the story. As you may have guessed from the headline, that’s where we still are — though not without some turbulence along the way.
You may recall that last month Establishment insiders held a little training session for favored candidates in Chicago, conducted by Christine Pelosi, who will be visiting with us at FDL later today. Most of the candidates who were invited have no primary opponents and they are busy battling Republicans. A few– one of whom was Joan Fitz-Gerlad– have very serious primaries and this caused some alarm. Was this the dreaded anti-grassroots DCCC interference, the kind of interference that saddled us with a Congress that can’t get much done because of so many reactionaries, some of whom were unscrupulously pushed by Rahm Emanuel last year? I spent some time carefully examining all three candidates’ websites and talking with Joan and Jared on the phone.
It was AFSCME, a union very much in cahoots with the Inside-the-Beltway crowd, that had invited Joan and they based their tremendous enthusiasm for her on a solidly pro-labor record. You know how suspicious I am of the DCCC so I kept digging. The fact that her website has no issues stinks of a classic Emanuel tactic. (Jared’s and Will’s websites are issues-rich and you get a real feel for where they stand.) The odd thing about Joan is that after talking with her campaign manager and with her, she really doesn’t have anything to hide. Her stands on the issues are fine.
Emanuel claims that immigration is the third rail of electoral politics this year and the same degree of hysteria he exhibited last year regarding the war– he demanded candidates tone down their criticism of Bush– is what he’s demonstrating this year about immigration. “Move to the right,” is what he’s demanding, as utterly tone-deaf this year as he was last year. 15% of the residents of CO-02 are Hispanic (far less than Emanuel’s own Chicago district) and the area is rational about the issue of immigration. So are each of the candidates.
Shafroth’s website:
The topic of immigration has been wrongly exploited by some for political gain; most of us come from families that immigrated to this country during the past few hundred years. Immigration reform, however, remains a vitally important issue. I support a guest worker program with a path to citizenship that will help bring millions of undocumented workers out of the shadows. We must be careful that this is done in a fair and respectful manner. In addition, we must crack down on other areas of the broken immigration system. I support strengthening border security so that immigrants can enter our country through safe and legal routes. We also must create and enforce stronger penalties for employer violations.
When I spoke with Jared, who is on a fact-finding mission to Iraq this week, he was, if anything, even more supportive of comprehensive reform. His website statement:
My great-grandparents found hope and opportunity on the shores of this fine nation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. America offers the same promise to millions of people around the world. The hardworking, taxpaying, law-abiding immigrants who renew our country and add to our diversity and strength should not be exploited to create a massive underclass—such an approach opposes our values and hurts all working families. On the contrary, we should establish a path for them to earn full participation in the America they help to build.
The current immigration system must be replaced by comprehensive immigration reform that secures our borders and enforces the rule of law, respects the dignity and dreams of immigrants, reflects our values, and recognizes the needs of our communities and businesses. We must effectively address both the security and economic interests of our nation.
Therefore, I support the bipartisan compromise reached through the leadership efforts of Senator Salazar that does the following:
• Provides a transitional pathway to citizenship for qualifying immigrants
• Boosts the number of border agents
• Tightens border security and work-site enforcement
• Establishes an identity verification system
• Sets aside 40 percent of future visas to be allocated on a merit-based system, awarding points for education and skills needed in the U.S.This plan is fair, tough, enforceable and realistic, and brings millions of people out of the dark shadows and into the American mainstream.
Like I said, Joan has no issues on her cookie cutter site. It made me mistrustful but when I spoke with her about the issue, I was greatly relieved to hear her very reasonable explanation of her work in the Senate around Amendment 55 and the special session ex-Governor Bill Owens, a right-wing demagogue, called to clamp down on immigrants. Joan did what she felt she could to mitigate his demands with her shaky one-vote majority. It’s up to the citizens of CO-02 to determine if her rationale is what they’re looking for in a congressmember. I was more interested in how she would respond going forward.
When I asked her if she recalled hearing Rahm Emanuel tell Democratic candidates at the infamous training session in Chicago a few weeks ago that they had to move to the right on immigration, she giggled and said “no, I guess I wasn’t paying much attention to him.” I was surprised. You weren’t paying attention to Rahm Emanuel?? “No,” she continued; “he’s going to say things nationally that he thinks are important but every congressional district is different. He wasn’t giving us a ‘You must go do this.’ It was a suggestion, nationally from the D-Trip. I just took it as a suggestion.”
When I asked her how she felt about the harsh enforcement-only/xenophobic Heath Shuler immigration bill, co-sponsored by so many Democrats in Emanuel’s orbit her reply was “I wouldn’t. If Tom Tancredo’s name is on it, I’m not co-sponsoring it. I know Tom Tancredo and I know where he is on immigration. I think you have to vote not from the pulpit on high but from your heart… I was urged to run for governor but I didn’t want to move to the right. I wanted to run from this district; the state is more conservative than this congressional district. I wanted to run from a district that is progressive so that you could actually say things and move people’s minds and hearts. You cast a vote and you tell people why you did and why you’re proud to do it– to act and sound like a Democrat.” They all do. I wish we had such good choices everywhere in the country.

Hi Howie
Hello
Hi Howie…thanks again for all your work. It looks like I will be moving to Butte, Montana sometime in the next year. I’ll have to give up Roberts and Brownback for Tester and Baucus in the Senate. No more Boyda, but I don’t know whom I’ll get in the House.
Hi Howie. Is anyone challenging Tancredo?
Howie! Hope you had a good Thanksgiving!
NZ Expat, now in KS @ 3
The Democrat who was running against Rehberg– Kennedy– withdrew. Looks bad for those who had hoped that we could replace Montana’s last federally elected Republican (unless you count Baucus as one).
Loo Hoo. @ 4
I don’t believe he is running.
Loo Hoo. @ 4
Tancredo isn’t running for Congress again. He’s running for president and after he’s defeated… who knows. Maybe he’ll go to work advising Rahm Emanuel about immigration policy.
Mark Udall’s cousin, Tom, is also moving from a safe House seat to run for US Senate from NM. So far Udall is polling ahead of all the R candidates (including the hated Heather Wilson and Steve Pearce, both R US House members) and the DINO on the Dem side.
AZ Matt @ 5
Thanksgiving was great. I had green papaya salad at my favorite L.A. Thai restaurant and yesterday I boycotted Black Friday.
bg @ 9
Yeah, I think the New Mexico Senate race is one of our best shots to replace a reactionary and very corrupt Republican with a solid Democratic populist.
all you pups who support Howie Klein and Blue America
digg this post
Am feeling very optimistic about the ‘08 elections. Thanks for all you are doing Howie.
howieklein @ 10
I didn’t have to worry about Black Friday since I live 120 miles from any decent shoppoing.
Hey Howie!
I had Diana DeGette when I was in Denver. Sounds like Joan Fitzgerald may be somewhat in the same mold. Nice to see Colorado returning to the shade they once were (Gary Hart, Pat Schroeder, et al).
Hi Howie, thanks!
egregious @ 13
We all do what we can– you more than many, my dear– and, like you, I am also very optimistic. I was buoyed by the massive defeat for John Howard in Australia today. Australia and Poland both elected new leaders who immediately announced they are pulling their troops out of Iraq. And I’m really excited that Peter Garrett will be in the Australian cabinet. That would be like Springsteen being in our own.
I’m going to be taking a break from Blue America for a few weeks. I’m going to India, Burma (Myanmar) and Thailand. In the interim, I’d be really interested in hearing from pups about which local congressional candidates you think we need to get behind in January when we start up again.
Howie, are you familiar with the DNC/Dean 50-State Strategy and the training that is being done around the country on this?
I attended one in NM and was impressed. It takes the best of what MoveOn did in 2004, using door-to-door contacts and builds on that.
I would like to promote more of our people to get involved in this activity and would love to see you focus on it in an on line format such as this. We need to get our people into the trenches. It is one year, minus a couple of weeks until D Day.
Howie,
Thanks for the Colorado refresher. As a former resident of Ft. Collins and Denver, I remain interested in the area (and still follow the Denver Broncos!)

Well as this was EPU’ed:
OT from the front page of today’s NYT online.
This is a favorite NYT tactic: treat something as if it is already an established fact and then build on that. So there is progress in Iraq because the Times and the White House declares there is and then they re-inforce the idea by asserting that even Democrats acknowledge it. So it must be true, right? I guess we are all supposed to stop believing our lying eyes now.
Meanwhile George
Mother TheresaBush is not, I repeat not a lame duck, do not even think that, erase that image from your minds. No, he is out doing his best to help ordinary Americans, now that Congress and the evil Democrats have effectively obstructed his agenda. Yes, he vetoed SCHIP but he did that only for our own good and because denying healthcare to millions of children will in time no doubt help us by eliminating some of the excess population. When I see articles like these I have to wonder why the Times at this late date continues to whore for the White House and at what point Bill Keller and Pinch Sulzberger will change the paper’s name to the White House Times.
bg @ 19
Yes, absolutely. Be sure you come to the Book Salon today and talk about this training. I hear it is a lot more powerful than the training our guest write about. Jane will need some people with your experience to share their ideas.
howieklein @ 18
Larry Kissell! NC-08 in ‘08
And thank you for your kind words of encouragement.
dakine01 @ 15
Ah, yes! Another Pat Schroeder would be good! And Gary Hart, apart from his sexcapade, wasn’t bad. And then there was the prescient Dick Lamm, who foresaw the looming crisis in health care and challenged us to think long and hard about it, back before anyone had thought much about it at all.

Great write up Howie. This is very helpful. Thanks.
I hear good things about Polis.
When I saw the title of the post “CO-2 looks good”, I thought it was a snarky reference to global warming.
Have a wonderful vacation, Howie. You certainly deserve it. Look forward to hearing about your travels, and particularly Burma.
Egregious, I’m glad you brought Kissell up. We endorsed him last year and we already re-endorsed him this year and have been collecting contributions for him. HOWEVER, he seems to have been one of the first candidates to have leaped at Emanuel’s diktat to “move to the right” on immigration. He hasn’t responded to my request for some answers on this. I’d love to know what people in the community think. I’ve been getting suggestions to drop him from our list but also advise to let it ride.
Howie, you should contact Petrocelli about India if you don’t already have a plan in place. He has relatives there, and could give you the good tips!
Jane Hamsher @ 26
Me too. What impresses you the most about him?
Oh, excellent. I will make sure to be here later.
Honestly, the trainer we had was really dynamic. We should invite him to the Lake for a dialog. I know there was a Year Out training on line last week, but I did not “attend.”
At any rate, the idea is that if we build our network by recruiting people door-to-door and increase the number of door-knockers starting now until next August or so, we will be able to turn out the vote.
As someone who became a total convert to this work in 2004 with MoveOn, I am a true believer. And it is really great to meet the voters.
So, this is exciting. Really. It is how we will win, if we get going now.
howieklein @ 29
This is no Heath Shuler. Kissell is a genuine champion for the little guy who is getting crushed by outsourcing. They have a high rate of unemployment and a very high rate of mortgage foreclosures. He came so close to beating the odious Robin Hayes-R. last time, only 300 votes short. I hope we can help put him over the top.
Immigration is an issue where there are genuine differences of opinion within the progressive community. It is one of the only issues where I have seen real divisions here at FDL. I don’t think we can impose some kind of purity test on a guy from rural North Carolina when we cannot even come to a consensus ourselves.
howieklein @ 29
I am sorry to hear that about Larry Kissell..no more money without some answers…
After that bit of bad news, I hate to use Larry as an example but are there similar candidates like Larry ‘06..hard working, no DCCC support and in a cheap media market where a few bucks might have some impact?
Hiya! Is this the kind of thread where you have to stay on topic?
Steve-AR @ 34
After that bit of bad news, I hate to use Larry as an example but are there similar candidates like Larry ‘06..hard working, no DCCC support and in a cheap media market where a few bucks might have some impact?
Kissell is being well supported by the DCCC this year. The best-spent bucks right now, in my opinion, are for progressives running in primaries against reactionaries. My faves are John Laesch, Donna Edwards and Mark Pera. Before I leave for India I also plan on donating some money to the primary campaigns of Vic Wulsin, Dennis Shulman, and Steve Cohen. They’re all at Blue America, for anyone feeling flush after Black Friday.
SnarKassandra @ 35
nah… there’s no guest today, so bring up whatever you’d like.
howieklein @ 37
I just did a really hard blog post, but I think it came out well. It’s about the statistics on having parents in jail.
Howie, Be safe and send e-postcards from Myanmar.. Will you maintain your old travel blog this year?
Kassie, our community just spent an enormous amount of money on a new jail. Within months of opening, it is over-crowded, and no end in sight.
Lots more children without their parents. Of course also lots of parents who are lacking skills in life and parenting, not to mention needing the same interventions that would be helpful for your mother but are not available.
SnarKassandra @ 38
Great post! You, young lady, are a role-model statistic and can be of great inspiration to other kids. You are a great gift – a gift statistic!
Howie, have a fantastic trip. Wow.
Eureka Springs @ 39
Of course! I’m talking with Jane and Christy about doing some live blogging from Yangon if anything is happening there. But if its just touristy, I’ll be posting at the Around the World Blog, as usual.
Attended a house party with Congressman Harry Mitchell AZ CD-05, it was my first time meeting Harry and actually having a conversation with him. Mitchell states he was approached by several Democratic congresspersons about immigration with others thinking Mitchell’s stand would be in the Tancredo mold. Mitchell’s assessment is areas of high unemployment seem to generate the harder and more putative stance.
Mitchell supports comprehensive immigration reform AND help those areas of high unemployment which could eventually soften the stand on undocumented workers.
My only complaint….. Mitchell still uses the wingnut words…..
illegalimmigrants.Howie, who is Roland?
Thanks LS!
SnarKassandra @ 45
Roland and I have been close friends for 17 years and we’re traveling buddies. He’s from maine originally but he’s a school teacher in L.A. now. Here’s a photo of him I took in Marrakech a couple years ago. (Talk about off topic!)
Howie:
Do you have your visa for Myanmar? If yes, I’m surprised you didn’t have problems. A friend of mine couldn’t get it about two weeks ago… His Brit colleague got one, but they canceled the trip…
It’s not off topic if you are sending people over to see your blog!
Biodun @ 48
My passport is at the Burmese Embassy. And my fingers are crossed.
Here are some excellent reports from Jared Polis’ trip to Iraq. I think it says a lot about him that he took the initiative and went to see for himself what was going on there.
Howie @ 50:
Ah, ah. Do they know of your media activities? That’s the key. My friend is in the media.
howieklein @ 17
That would be awesome! It was sad to lose him from the music world, but at least it was for a great cause.
Hi Howie.
Ohio seems to be turning more and more blue these days.
Do you know of any likely candidates shaping up to run against Sen. Voinovich in ‘08?
Also, the 16th U.S. House District (currently represented by Ralph Regula -R- who has announced he will retire at the end of his current term) has been turning more and more BLUE the last few years. Do you know of any progressive Democrat of interest to Blue America, who might run for that seat? It sounds like a good time to try.
Re: John Howard:
He also couldn’t hold on to his seat. Talk of the ultimate dissing…
Oh, Howard even lost his seat.
Smack!
So long Chimp-kisser.
-GSD
No more Rahm-jobs.
-GSD
Adie @ 54
I have some high hopes for Ohio this year and in the immediate future. Over at DWT I did some writing about the election Dec 11, where progressive Robin Weirauch has a shot to take a solid Republican seat. Inside the Beltway Dems are evaluating the district incorrectly and discounting her strong chance to win. She’s getting no help even though both Governor Ted Strickland and Senator Sherrod Brown won there last year.
Hey Howie! As always, you do an amazing job of summarizing the status of these Congressional races.
As you know, I’m a big supporter of Jared Polis in this race. Joan has been hand-picked by the Beltway folks and the ‘powers that be’ in Colorado. I don’t know much about Shafroth, but one thing is for sure about Jared: he is beholden to no one. Because of this, I’m confident he will be a true progressive when in Congress.
In addition, his election will make a big statement about the advancement of equal rights for LGBT America. He’s not making it an issue, but nobody else is either. It’s amazing.
Thanks again for your great coverage!
Lane
Howie you may enjoy viewing the paintings in the link below featuring paintings of the artisans and craftsmen of India in the late 1920’s by my hero Stowitts (American 1892-1953) from the permanent collection of the Stowitts Museum & Library on the Monterey peninsula.

Whoops – try http://www.stowitts.org and click the India link….if I only had a techie brain!
I see some discussion of NC politics here today. I think the most nationally significant race will be for the Senate. E. Dole is up for reelection, but I think she’s going to be a tough nut to crack. I should be more informed on this, but there are only so many hours in the day. There are two Dem candidates at the moment, Jim Neal and Kay Hagan. Neal entered the race first, but when it became widely known that he is gay, Hagan (who seems to be the Establishment candidate) entered the race. Her protestations that it had nothing to do with Neal’s sexuality seemed perhaps less than fully honest. I gather that Neal is the more progressive candidate, but unfortunately , I don’t think this state is ready for a gay Senator yet.
Lane Hudson @ 59
In case anyone hadn’t guessed, lane was one of the friends I was referring to in the post who steered me towards Jared.
Good news on the LGBT front though. It’s a win-win. Joan shepherded an ENDA bill through the Colorado State Senate that includes transgendered people– unlike the one the U.S. Congress passed– and after passing it three times, she actually wound up with a governor who was willing to sign it.
egregious @ 33
So many immigrants in NC work in hog and chicken processing … the best thing we could do for them would be to work for real progress on workplace safety issues. There have to be engineering solutions that can allow the employers to make money without endangering the lives and limbs of the employees. Where is N.C. State on research on these issues?
BTW, Howie:
Good luck with your visa. I hope you get it. Have a great trip. Have you been to India before? Try not to let the abject poverty upset you… Especially in Mumbai.
Diane Benson held the first-ever LGBT fundraiser for a US Congressional candidate in Alaska history Wednesday at Mad Myrna’s. It was a kick!
Biodun @ 64
Thanks– and yes, I lived there for 2 years and have been back a few times since.
Speaking of the ENDA, my congresscritter, Mazie Hirono, was one of the cosponsors. She sent me a letter recently stating she will continue to fight for it, with transgenders included…
Burns, I told ya Hawaii would win… :P
I just finished a little open love letter to George Bush, especially for anyone who enjoys Gustav Holst.
Wow… Thanks Howie. It’s nice to find out that there are still win/win situations left in national politics. May the best Democrat as The People’s choice win!
I’m more likely to support the actual LGBT candidate than the non-LGBT but LGBT-supportive candidate. I know that’s “identity politics” but I’ve yet to face a Log Cabin LGBT neo-con on the ballot, so it hasn’t been a hard choice.
Jared Polis had a fundraiser in SF that was written up beforehand in the local gay rag, but without saying when it was, so I contacted his campaign via the Polis website, thinking I would pay to attend and get some face time/chat that I could pass along to Howie for Blue America consideration.
Didn’t hear a word from the Polis campaign.
When a mutual friend said he was supporting Polis, I shared my experience and then heard from Polis right away. He gave me his email and phone number, and asked me to get in touch. He said he was having a fundraiser in California, headlined by Phil Angelides, in December.
I wrote back and said I’d like to meet him when he was in California again, but couldn’t imagine why people would come to a fundraiser headlined by Angelides, since he did such a poor job running against Arnold last time. I didn’t think Angelides would be such a great draw and said so.
That was over a month ago; haven’t heard anything since. I’d like to support Jared Polis but he is making it rather difficult.
I’m a Democratic Precinct Person in Colorado, and am working for Joan Fitz-Gerald. She’s very solid – worked very hard on the progressive side of all the issues while she was President of the Colorado Senate. She has a proven track record and gets things done.
You will hear a lot about Jared Polis because he has so much money, and he’d basically be fine if we didn’t have Joan, who will be better.
Howie @ 66:
Then you’ve seen it all. I also now remember that you’re a member of the Traveler’s Century Club.
Howie. Thanks much.
I’m OH resident, and very active in my own way, but not through the “regular” Dem. Party channels.
(please chalk that up to lingering burnout from dealing with #@&* years ago – besides, I’ve passed 60, thus allowed to follow my own nose; e.g., some of my most appreciative contacts are a bunch of 30-something “kids” who didn’t used to vote till OUR grown kids started helping me motivate them; & another bunch are Univ. faculty-& staff-types; also other old coots like ourselves that we meet on trips, many of whom are very BLUE indeed thankyouverymuch – eclectic, independent type folk for whom I highlight noteworthy info from FDL, HuffPo, etc., find precinct-level, nuts’n’bolts voting info. etc. etc.)
Your links have given me some WONDERFUL extra feathers in my wings to help me flit around gathering info. I had been really frustrated with the local Dem. party methods – endless motivational breakfast presentations & stuff, making “canned” calls ad nauseum, zzzzzzzzzz. I’m just not that well house-broken, I guess, and never will be. Besides, it’s more fun running around the toobz with the kids than schmoozing over warm orange juice & half-frozen muffins listening to tepid tatter.
Have a wonderful trip, stay safe, and try to grab some good R&R before the big ‘08 push to come. We really appreciate all that you do.
Thanks again. ;->
TeddySanFran @ 71
Teddy, there isn’t much for you to do to help Jared except spread the word, as you’ve been doing. He doesn’t need financial help. It’s a fascinating race and I think all 3 are pretty good candidates.
Howie, will add my voice to those above to thank you again for your great work here and to wish you safe and interesting travels.
Gretchen D. @ 72
Thank you for your local perspective. Please stop by often and let us know how the campaign is progressing (pun intended!)
Nate!
You still here?
I got PW’s zed!!!!!
TeddySanFran @ 71
I don’t know the response to this question, but is there any chance that you’ve been able to get Joan Fitz-Gerald to respond to an email and provide you with her phone number? If you’re not getting a response from Jared, try him again. :)
How would you know? Residents of Idaho have been voting for the actual gay man over candidates more friendly to equal rights for years. The same is true in many other states.
I think it is a mistake to believe that just because someone shares a gender, orientation or other characteristic, that they are necessarily going to be supportive of others. Clarence Thomas is easily the worst justice on the Supreme Court for African-Americans, a Republican Congressional caucus heavy with homosexual men hasn’t done equality any favors, and Condi Rice hasn’t compiled a stellar track record for being good for women’s rights globally as Secretary of State.
It also works the other way: we should not vote against people because they are different either. And that kind of identity politics has been very destructive over the years…
Vote for what people do, not who they do.
Lillie.Yiyuan @ 81
Just look at Rahm Emanuel.
Oh that CO 2… the only one we should really care about is the CO2 that is strangling the planet… but if victory in C0 2 will lead to CO2 reductions, I guess we should pay attention.
bobschacht @ 24
What’s Lamm doing these days?
Ed*ard Teller @ 65
How is Benson’s campaign going?
For that matter, how is Allen’s campaign going in Maine and how is Collins doing?
Gretchen D. @ 72
Remember the basic “rules”:
a) look good
b) speak clearly
c) listen to your constitutents and then speak from your heart on how you would address their interests.
Everything else is really theatrics.
SteveInNC @ 61
My concern is over other things that relate to Neal. While it’s true he grew up in the Carolinas, he spent 20 years away and only returned there in 2006. Thus he’s gonna get portrayed as a bit of a carpetbagger, and unfamiliar with North Carolinas current issues. Compare that to Hagen, who was generally quite progressive in the NC Senate in terms of education, health care and Choice.
Neal has never been in any elected office, thus his actual record on these things is a bit of a cipher. Would he be able to actually produce viable legislation and work with other progressives? Or would he transform to more conservative positions, as so many that have projected themselves as progressives have?
Why is he running for the Senate, rather than some other office where he could gain the experience and demonstrate his capability to advance progressive positions?
Neal has been involved in corporate finance and has been involved in start-ups for health care firms. But what do these firms actually do? What was his role within them?
Neal’s homosexuality only was revealed after he announced his run for the Senate. Why was this something not placed right out front? He must have known that it would emerge as an issue in conservative North Carolina. But he kept this revealed. If one is going to run for office and is gay…one should be fully “out”. That’s more of an honesty and trust issue with the electorate. If you want the Public to “accept you” then you have to trust them to do so.
This ties in with running for lesser level offices. If one has succeeded at lower offices and demonstrated to voters that you are competant and working in their best interests they’ll ignore their prejudices. But Neal can’t demonstrate political success in this way.
There is the other issue~ the fact that he got divorced (because of his [newly discovered?] homosexuality?). Lot’s of questions there about his knowledge of homosexuality during his marriage that will be asked. That’s all going to be raised in the campaign as a Family Values issue by Republicans. While this process might be educational for North Carolinians, is a Senate Campaign where such “education” comes at the loss of a Senate seat to the Republicans worth it?
Wouldn’t it be better done at a State Assembly or Congressional House Seat level?
Sorry you fell for Fitz-Gerald’s claim that she just absolutely had to cosponsor a version of a Tom Tancredo anti-immigrant bill and railroad it into law during a special session.
The truth is that after pro-immigrant activists defeated the initiative at the Colorado Supreme Court, Fitz-Gerald slipped a knife into our back by turning around and passing the same bills into law. And then she held a press conference to gloat about how the Democrats were the new party of “tough on immigration.”
http://www.progressivecoalitio…..ion134.htm
Oh yeah, and she voted for a resolution praising the invasion of Iraq while a Colorado state senator.
If you can’t choose between Polis and Shafroth, fine. But it is disappointing that you can’t condemn Fitz-Gerald in strong terms.
