Late night ZED?
congrats, OC.
OOPS. Bad manners. Hiya, Pach. Good Thanksgiving?
Hi Pach! Happy Turkey day!
oh pach – my favorite turkey day tv episode ever! thanks so very much
You’d be amazed how much room two determined chihuahuas can take up on a queen sized bed, when they want to.
Heya ever-body.
“oh the humanity!”
one of the funniest tv moments…
msmolly: yes, good TG indeed. How about you?
Pachacutec @ 7
By the time he was 8 months old, TexTeen could already take up an entire double bed by himself.
Pachacutec @ 7
you’d think they weighed 80 pounds a piece!
hiya Pach.
I ate three bowls of this today…
Pumpkin Ice Cream
2 cups heavy cream (whipping cream)
2 cups whole milk
¾ cup brown sugar
¼ cup white sugar
3 egg yolks beat on high until thick and light (about 1 min)
1 tbsp bourbon
1 cup canned or homemade unsweetened pumpkin
½ tsp cinnamon
½ tsp ginger
½ tsp nutmeg
¼ tsp clove
Stir first five ingredients constantly in a heavy 2-3 qt sauce pan with a wooden spoon over med heat until it reaches 170, or if you don’t have a candy thermometer, until it coats the back of the spoon . Don’t boil it, you’ll scramble the eggs.
Put the freezing canister in a big bowl with ice in the bottom, pour the custard in the canister, then fill the rest of the bowl with ice. Stir until cooled. Or make a day ahead and chill in the fridge.
Cook the alcohol out of the bourbon in a little sauce pan over med heat for about half a minute. Careful, flammable.
Mix last 6 ingredients in a bowl, add to the custard. Whisk to combine.
Freeze according to appliance directions.
Pachacutec @ 7
my 9lb token takes up quite a chunk and on the really cold nights when my 13lb cat, bailey, joins us, i am left with a small strip in the middle of the bed.
hey wangdang!
OldCoastie: 5 lbs a piece, but I think they emit retractable velcro when they’re asleep. Very difficult to dislodge or shove over.
Suzanne @ 14
at least they give you the middle and not a little square in the top corner…
Suzanne @ 14
At least it’s the middle!
bookmarked that recipe, wangdang, thanks. that sounds yummy.
fortunately, we have a command, “MOVE!” that works pretty well…
Our pups sleep in the middle.
I’ve been telling my partner. . . from across the room, it seems. . . I feel as if something has come between us lately.
(laughing) they work hard to make sure i am between them at all times. they want no cat/dog interaction going on under the covers.
Thanks, Pach! I’d almost forgotten this episode. My sons have never seen this series; we’ll have to get it.
Hi all!
Pachacutec @ 21
he-he
Pachacutec @ 10
Too much food. Now zoning out with the Colt’s game on…
The thing is, since I work form a home office, they follow me a little more than my partner. So they scrunch up into my side when the sleep. Result: a sliver on the edge of my bed, and a recurring wish to revisit my old chiropractor.
I might feel better if they felt at all guilty, but they just blink at me innocently, smiling.
It’s snowing here below the Texas Panhandle. Anyone else get snow today? It’s supposed to be good luck if it snows on Thanksgiving.
Hi Pach, Suzanne and et al…..
Pachacutec @ 26
Well of course! It’s their bed you and your partner are invading.
Warm here in NY. Went out today in just a light sweater.
Hi Pach, Happy TG. I LOVE that show! Pity I’m dial up impaired.
Audrey @ 27
Cass called an hour ago. snowing north of Fort Worth. Not here.
funny, I haven’t seen that turkey episode in ages.
LOL! If I even look like I’m heading for bed, all 14 dogs race to beat me to it…and they have that velcro thing down pat! I miss my chihuahuas.

Phillips Exeter Academy announced this month that it is offering a free education (tuition, room and board, texts, etc) to all accepted applicants from families with less than $75,000 per annum income.
They have a huge endowment (over $1 billion) and it appears they have become very diverse and inclusive. I was struck by the broad curriculum – modern languages include chinese, japanese and arabic.. and they offer many AP courses and a post-grad year..
Admission must be extremely competitive, but a great deal for a smart and ambitious young person who is up for boarding school. Probably with the post-grad year, a lot of college credits could be amassed.
I posted about this in LL nite a few days back, but way epu’d.. Good to see an old line prep school doing the right thing.

We had snow here in westren Montana earlier this week (about a foot on Monday), but none today. It has settled for bone chilling cold instead. High today was 18 and it is currently 14. I have a friend who went there. She was one of their first “diversity” admissions (female) and had a full ride scholarship. I wonder is (Phillips) Andover is doing the same. Phillips Andover is three years older than Phillips Exeter and is slightly higher on the “snoot” scale, at least that was my impression as an outside observer many years ago.
No idea. Exeter is putting it forth as an initiative inspired by the head’s having attended with a scholarship and the school’s desire to make its education available to most of the people in the country. When I knew enough to have an impression, I too considered Andover more elitist. No reason to think because one would do something the other would, unless it’s a general trend. Other than being strong competitors and founded back in the year zed by relatives, I don’t think they are connected. Do know Exeter has the larger endowment.
Steve-AR@112
Well, sort of. Prez didn’t try to scare the sh*t out of us, but I managed to do it on my own. Never wanted to bring a child into that kind of world. Changed my mind when it seemed that Reds were close to comatose & MAD worked.
And then there was Senator McCarthy.
Good Evening folks.
First, I’d like to thank Jane for posting Alice’s Restaurant. I lost my copy when my pc crashed a few weeks ago, and I really needed to hear it today.
As folks here know, I’ve been experimenting with a breakthrough cardiofeedback technology that I have called Gizmo. Some time in the next week I’m taking my experiments to a whole new level and I wanted to give you all a heads up.
I have a friend who lives in a nursing home across town. Twelve years ago, she was a highly skilled surgical nurse, and one day out of the blue, her boyfriend went at her with a pair of brass knuckles and left her for dead. She awoke from a coma as a quadriplegic and has been that way ever since.
The next time we meet, we’re gonna play the butterfly game for a couple of hours while our hearts dance in a fractal feedback loop to her favorite CDs.
This isn’t science fiction, but I have no doubt that this will be the human heart equivalent of a Vulcan mind meld.
I’ll keep you posted.

Yet still, somehow, the guru.
Congressional Democrat Withdrawal Plan Wouldn’t
The Democrats’ flagship proposal on Iraq is aimed at bringing most troops home. Yet if enacted, the law would still allow for tens of thousands of U.S. troops to stay deployed for years to come.
For those who want troops out, “you’ve got more holes in here than Swiss cheese,” said Tom Andrews, national director of the war protest group Win Without War and a former congressman from Maine.
The Congressional Bill requires troops to start departing Iraq within 30 days. Bush is alikely to do this anyways as he builds-down the 30,000 troop “surge”.
The Bill also sets a goal of ending “combat” by Dec. 15, 2008.
The troops remaining would then be restricted to counterterrorism, training Iraqi military and police, and guarding U.S. assets, including diplomats and the embassy.
Military officials and analysts say the proposal allows substantial forces to remain. To maintain those three missions could require as few as a couple thousand troops to more than 70,000.
Maj. Gen. Michael Barbero,Deputy Chief of Staff for Iraq Operations said it would be difficult to accomplish ANY of those missions without a significant force. He noted “several thousand” troops are in specialized anti-terrorism units but these are dependant on the support provided by conventional combat operations. A “stand-alone” counter-terrorism force would have to be several times larger.
There are currently between 8,000 to 10,000 troops are specifically dedicated to training the Iraqi Security forces, with many thousands more in other areas providing additional training and support. Last year, the Iraq Study Group suggested 10,000 to 20,000 troops should be embedded with Iraqi combat units.
Then there is the “support units” (medical, supply, base management, etc.) needed to support those troops.
Then there would be the troops tasked to defend the Vatican-sized embassy, regional consulates, diplomats…and, according to some, reconstruction and humanitarian operations. This could add between 3000 (for a more limited) and 10,000 more troops (for a broader mission) to the permanently based forces.
Even Rep. John Murtha, suggested the bill might leave as many as 30,000 troops.
Thus when Democratic candidates say they will leave behind “only” those troops essential to fight terrorists, to protect the embassy and humanitarian operations, to train Iraqi forces, and to prevent genocide we need to realize that this is NOT the same as FULL AND COMPLETE WITHDRAWAL. Those candidates are being deceptive when they talk about ending the presence of “combat troops”.
And saying that the forces are going to based in Kuwait, and enter Iraq only in “operations” is equally (if not more) disingenuous. Any such operation would, to be successful, require forward bases camps where the troops would be engaged in combat on a daily basis.
TexBetsy @ 143
Betsy, your recommendation is good enough for me…I’ll second the nomination.
DrDick @ 121
They so desperately want another Cold War.
Say, does anyone know who in the wingnutsphere has been recently putting forth the idea that it will be terrible if Hillary is elected because all those world leaders (especially in the Middle East) won’t deal with a woman (they’re so backward, you know)?
M-in-L was spouting a bit of that at dinner. She’s not a wingnut (quite the opposite when she was younger), but these days she picks up random stuff from the radio and doesn’t always differentiate between the legitimate stuff and the wingnut crap. The reality is that these guys fear women, especially when they have vanquished men to achieve positions of power. It’s almost as if the woman has big MOJO and used black magic.
Queen Elizabeth I was considered a tough, but successful, negotiator within the Muslim world (she had trade and military treaties with Barbary Sultans and with Aceh, amongst others). In fact, several Muslim “Sultanas” rose up right after her rule. And even the most misogynistic of them are immediately placed in a situation of subconciously “losing face” when they have to negotiate with a female leader. They already start off with a “compromise”. That puts them off their game.

I did mention that. And since she’s not actually a wingnut (she just listens to them sometimes), the conversation ended amicably with everyone agreeing that even if that were true, it can’t be any worse diplomatically than it is now!
Thanks Betsy! It’s fun work.

Hear hear!

I loved Duckman! Funnhy and clever are my favourite combinations. The guy in the Utube describes himself as an “unusualist”.

Way-far theen?

I have a friend who went there. She was one of their first “diversity” admissions (female) and had a full ride scholarship. Generally regards it as a good experience and a great education, but has some interesting things to say about the upper class twits (my term, hers is much less socially acceptable) who made up most of her classmates.
—————
Here is what they say about diversity:
* 39 percent of us are ethnically diverse
* 12 percent of us are international students
* 50 percent from public schools, 50 percent from private, parochial, military, home or foreign schools
No mention of sex, but lots of pix of girls (fwiw). I’m curious, how long ago was your friend there?
DrDick @ 196
i may as well sip some dessert vin santo… i’ll be right back…

As I said, she was one of their very first diversity admissions (more than 30 years ago). At that time there were only a handful of women, no ethnic minorities, and a handful of other public school boys. Sounds like they have come a long way in the interval.
Dr. Dick sez:
“I’m not a Hillary supporter (she’s way too corporate and conservative for me), but the treatment she has been getting in the media is just way over the top and totally uncalled for. She is smart, competent, and experienced and would make a far better president than any of the Republicans and some of the other Democrats.”
i say: Exactamento …..

You are not quite a year older, 2/2/52.

Clean up at 213.

I feel so stupid! I signed up a couple days ago, I go over there, it clearly shows me logged in and all of that and I can NOT for the life of me find ANYTHING remotely resembling a “Recommend” button. HALP!
Suzanne @ 178
Quickly?
newtonusr @ 198
And you guys too! I still have my pumpkin pie in the fridge. Couldn’t eat it. Maybe tonight and maybe for breakfast… Went to brother and sis in law’s house and played (?) poker…

got that mid-Twentieth Century chic about us
These table decorations have been in my family since 1960 or earlier. This is the first year that they are mine and on my (friend’s) table. They’re guarding the stuffing.

It goes with my 36 year old earrings (boy does that weird out the students when they hear it).

Here’s a little something from my playlist tonight. Another of those amazing 15 year olds.
yellowdog jim @ 65
I was two, so I’m afraid I don’t remember. This does remind me of the first time I was in a discussion of favorite music around the Lake, which was the first time I realized that I was younger than most of the people I was socializing. (I think it’s a mark of how good the people who hang out here are that I couldn’t tell before that.)

It’s amazing how the little treasures help make the holiday, isn’t it.

Just smelly troll droppings.
eCAHNomics @ 59
sorry, eC, i wasn’t ignoring you but i was away from the iMac for about an hour and just saw your question: it’s pretty cheap here. i pay E450 for a one bedroom flat that includes some utilities cost (depending on how much i use). the flat is pretty spacious. food costs are reasonable. i use public transport so i don’t know about car expenses except that benzine is a heck of a lot more expensive than it is in the US. i love Berlin and it’s only two hours by train. i think expenses there are going up but you can still get something reasonable on the eastern side.
TexBetsy @ 225
Oh Tex B, I have the same, a little turkey candle and also glass turkeys from my Mother-in-law. They are so cute!

i was a teacher in Springfield, Tennessee. Johnny Washer, a sophomore, geek trombonist with braces came into the auditorium and told me what had happened. when the band kids came to class the next hour we played the Bach Prelude and Fugue in g minor (the little). my first son was two months old. i went home after school and held him for a long time.

Sorry, for some reason, my reply didn’t post…
I was writing that I remember every event of that whole weekend…
It’s there within the comment. :)
DrDick @ 213
Only reason I asked is lack of info about when Exeter went co-ed. Things were gawd-awful for women in a lot of places in the ’60s thru mid ’70s at least. Some of it was insidious and hard to call. Easy to imagine how tough it might have been with preppie twits who felt their space invaded by lesser mortals.
Audrey @ 247
Now I KNOW I’ve had too much Thanksgiving…
I just discovered this song, “Pigs Might Fly”. It about sums it up with the Dems.

Thanksgiving is a computer-free day at my house, so I’m late on this.
I distinctly recall watching this episode with my mom and she cracked up for days afterward recalling the “as God is my witness” line.
A high point in absurdist TV.
I remember when they brought Lee Oswald out and he was shot. I thought it was obvious they wanted him killed because they brought him out without protection into a crowd.
I was 6.
Think that shaped my political views?
