Great googly moogly:
– Roy at Alicublog has a bone to pick with David Brooks hipster cred. Shocking, that.
– TS at Instaputz. He cracks me up.
– John at Americablog catches what might be one of the dumber Bush statements this week. That’s really saying something…
– Kung Fu Monkey has some interesting thoughts on rearranging the deck chairs…or not so much. Interesting thoughts on the WGA, the ongoing strike, studios and power differentials…and what may or may not ever be possible. Good stuff.
– Why I love Roger Ailes (the good one), #63. (And no, I didn’t buy the Fleischer book either. And if anyone did, would they admit it publicly?) And I think Steve Soto’s Cheney Bunch theory is spot on.
– I’m missing Steve Gilliard’s voice a lot lately. So here’s a good one on Thanksgiving. Enjoy.
– This is appalling. As is this.
– And this just cracked me up. Which, of course, leads to a YouTube of the best fights scenes evah on Buffy.
– Waving hello to strategerie.
– I can beat Maru at the worst title ever contest. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: “How to Good-Bye Depression: If You Constrict Anus 100 Times Everyday. Malarkey? or Effective Way?” (And no, I didn’t just make that up.)
*Why yes, Skippy did coin “blogtopia,” why do you ask?

Happy Thanksgiving!!
mmmmmmmm… Pie.
Agh. I have to start the pies before the kid starts asking about them…
Hope I have all the spices I need and the evaporated milk; I think I forgot to text the great white hunter while he was at the store. He’s back now, and won’t make another run.
Mr. Gnome baked his pies last night. As the pumpkin pies sat cooling on the table Gus and Claude, two of our cats, thought they should sample them. When Mr. Gnome yelled at them, Claude jumped, leaving his licking hole in the one pie and foot prints in the other!
My brain is full and I haven’t even read much of anything today. I can tell it’s going to be one of those days when I just read random snippets from blogs and say little of consequence :).
On the plus side, my sweetie’s cutting up a bunch of pears to put in the dehydrator, so the house is going to smell awesome for the rest of the morning.
Happy Thanksgiving, all. Despite all that is screwed up in this world, there is still much for which I am thankful.
Cheers, pups!
Gnome de Plume @ 4
Ah, the joys of being owned by felines. Doncha just laugh at the folks who ask about keeping them off counters and such? Like that’s a possibility?
I love pie!
Zedigg
Oh the smell of pie baking! We’ve got pumpkin and apple going.
One thing I love about Thanksgiving is that it is traditional yet flexible.
I’ve got to get my veggies prepared. I am roasting a bunch on root vegetables, but not til after Mr. Gnome finishes baking his family’s recipe for cornbread dressing. We don’t have to be in Austin until 3:00, thank goodness. We may get to eat around 5:00 or 6:00.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
I know Christy doesn’t like to ask for money for the site, but I think it’s okay if I say something. So… :)
Firedoglake is, by far, one of the best blogs out there, but just because it’s free to use doesn’t mean that it doesn’t cost anything. If you have a little bit to spare, please consider making a small donation.
If you have a lot to spare, well, you can do the math.
I was trying to figure out things to post about that I was thankful for, and just realized that maybe I should make a point of demonstrating that thankfulness in a more specific and concrete fashion by actually making a donation. So there you have it– my brief pitch for the site and mention of the fact that it does take money to keep it going.
dakine01 @ 7
Well, when I had a cat, I had a definite rule about his staying off the counters. Swift and emphatic response was the key. It worked most of the time– while I was in the room, at least. Obviously, YMMV.
Happy T-day, everyone!

Heh. Congrats on the digg zed egr…
A Washington Post report that the Bush administration is facing a massive backlog of hundreds of thousands of applications for U.S. citizenship is sadly unsurprising. After all, as the Katrina disaster and new passport fiasco demonstrated, incompetence is the hallmark of President Bush’s Department of Homeland Security. But with the news that hundreds of thousands of immigrants – many of them Hispanic – may be unable to vote in the 2008 elections, Americans can be forgiven for suspecting some more sinister as work.
For the disturbing details, see:
“Massive New Citizenship Backlog the Latest Voter Suppression?”
bobschacht @ 13
The key to that statement tho – while I was in the room. The felines have the patience to out last us on these things, knowing that we can’t block them forever.
Julie at 12 — Thanks so much — very much appreciated. :)
The very first time I made a Turkey day dinner, I made 2 pumpkin pies and put them out on the counter to cool… one was perfect, the other the crust was a little broken up.
I taste-tested the broken pie and then had to run to the store for something. Now, I had the sweetest, most well behaved pup in those days…
But when I returned from the store, one pie (the perfect one) was missing from the counter – thought maybe I was losing my marbles in the hurry of all the preparations…
finally found the pie pan stuffed WAY behind a chair and had to conclude my very well-behaved doggie was the thief… quickly made another pie and much to my dismay, offered the pumpkin filling bowl to the dog and she licked that up like she had NEVER tasted anything so good ever in her entire life…
hmm… never left a pie anywhere a dog could get to it since…
Christy Hardin Smith @ 16
If you want, I could just post something like that in every thread :)
The Bush family will lie about anything. Truman did not pardon the first turkey. There is no documented evidence of it until Bush the Elder did it in 1989.
Happy Thanksgiving Everyone
May the Love that knows no Comprehension find rest in your hearts and in your homes this Holiday Season.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Pies (pecan, pumpkin, and chocolate cream) were baked last night and the turkey has been in the oven for over 2 hours so far today. Woohoo!

With the help of the lapdog WaPo.

Quick visit to the neighbors?
Sorry to disagree with you, Christy, but as a confirmed Season 6 girl, the fight scene from “Smashed” is not only the best Buffy fight scene, it gets extra marks for sending Brent Bozell round the twist (which they promptly threw in his face).
Though the balcony scene in “Dead Things” gets kudos for sending them all into orbit, too.
Jane Hamsher @ 24
Ha. Bozell. Americans for “decency” indeed. What an ass.
Why is anyone surprised at Bush’s statement about democracy? It’s obvious he believes in New Speak and probably keeps “1984″ for bedside reading.
Jane Hamsher @ 24
I’d say that anything that gets Bozell’s knickers in a twist has to be worthwhile.
Starbuck @ 26
Only if it’s the classic comic version.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Just a quick drive by as I scurry around the kitchen. Been asking the husband for help for about an hour…to no avail. Just now he had the nerve to come into the kitchen because the dog wanted water. Hmph…I guess I know where I rate.
Punaise,
Gobble gobble to you. Have a fun day with family. How did the FDL california meetup go?? Check out my Sunrise album on Fb.
Quebecois @ 32

Anyone got a copy of “Alice’s Restaurant” to share?
I’ll be back later– I’m going to (finally) get in the shower and go out looking for birds :)
Astral — Here you go: YouTube of Arlo Guthrie.
Pumpkin pie and cherry pie are now cooking and scenting the house. The secret of the cherry pie is the combination of tapioca as the thickener and the almond extract in the filling…(recipe from the Mennonite Community Cookbook.
I just got a report on a olive blight in Tuscany… this will be a bad year for olive oil. The yield is only 10%.
And imagine the cost with the tanking dollar?
Astral Technician @ 34
The actual “Alice” of Alice’s Restaurant fame was on NPR yesterday (?). She apparently has a very unorthodox and, shall we say, inventive approach to cooking. Thanksgiving at Alice’s could be a surprising experience!

SanderO @ 38
olive your best are belong to U.S. (not)
I like Thanksgiving. You don’t have to buy presents for anyone. You don’t have to go shopping for your Easter bonnet and about the only one who makes a killing is the emergency on-call plumber unclogging all those kitchen sinks.
“I’m nice enough…I’m understanding enough…And gosh darn it, I’m not a Neocon.”

and it’s secular
Perfect. Alice’s Restaurant as a soundtrack to eating pie for breakfast in the warm sunlight..
I am so very thankful for firedoglake.
punaise @ 33
Thanks Pun, i had missed those. Great little vids.
Man, how long will it be before there’s a Montreal Firepup meeting???
Tula has a new thread upstairs.
Quebecois @ 45
all it takes is two. Siun and I had a “west coast meet-up” over a year and a half ago while she was in town for business.

Touche’Julie!
Astral Technician @ 34
I guess we must put that up, huh?
Christy, thank you so much for the good wishes! I hope that you, Mr. ReddHead, The Peanut, and everyone you love is having a wonderful Thanksgiving.
I said this to Jane yesterday, but Thanksgiving reminds me again how thankful I am for the owners, writers and commenters at the Lake. Here’s to all of you — may you be with those you love and like, today and every day.

christy, i’m thankful for blogging friends like you who help spread the word about important news items (like the writers strike) and are gracious enough to link to me.

So many great lines from that “song”. I heard it on npr too.
“Ya gotta sing loud if you want to end war & stuff.”
