Hot Tub Tom longs for the days of — well, himself:
DeLay told Yeas & Nays that Republicans in Congress are “looking for something to believe in” and “they’re not getting it out of this Republican leadership. … The leadership just isn’t getting it.”
“They’re looking for some backbone,” said DeLay, who also chimed in on the 2008 election. He said the Republican party is “going to get our clocks cleaned in 2008″ and unequivocally said that “Hillary [Clinton] will be the next president.” Which ought to give DeLay’s newest projects, the Coalition for a Conservative Majority and a consulting firm called First Principles, LLC, plenty to do.
I’m sure there’s a whole new generation of Republicans just aching to be educated in the fine art of strangling people with their own shoelaces.
DeLay gave us is his dour assessment at a book party for former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton, which was held at the Georgetown home of former Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman. The party was a virtual “who’s who” of the conservative movement: Lynne Cheney, Liz Cheney Perry, Scooter Libby, David Keene, Vin Weber, Grover Norquist, Barbara Comstock, Armstrong Williams, Mary Matalin, Ramesh Ponnuru, John Fund, Byron York and Kate O’Beirne.
Well, they do call Washington DC “Hollywood for ugly people.”
But, lest you think that The Hammer is about to start playing for the other team, he did poke fun at New York Times columnist — and favorite conservative punching bag — Paul Krugman: “I’d like to bitch-slap him.”
Ah, that fine-tuned, subtle DeLay wit. How we’ll miss it:
DeLay also ruled out another stab at politics, even if GOP fortunes reverse: “I’m 60 years old, I’m through.”
You know, I’d like to believe it, but frankly I’m just not that lucky.
Elsewhere around the party: Mehlman called Bolton “the Atticus Finch of the United Nations.” Mehlman said he sees similarities between the Finch character in “To Kill A Mockingbird” and the famously pugnacious Bolton, praising Bolton for always “earnestly making his case.”
I think I’ll go all concern-troll too and say that a good swift ass-kicking is exactly what the GOP needs in 2008. They could obviously use a bit more time to read.

zed?
You got it Richmond.
Jane — heh. A classic!
The best that can be said of Mr. DeLay is the he is the burp that keeps on repeating. Kinda like Newtie boy.
God he looks like he’s waiting for Jeff Gannon to hop in with him.
Hey, Tom! I’m 61 and just getting started. Whatta wuss…
musicsleuth- and you beat me running back downstairs!
I read before trying to zed.
Mister Tom used to deal with bugs. Then he demoted himself. He became a politician.
That first link is bad — there’s an extra “http//” in there.
The picture is bad enough but the guest list is truly revolting. Ole 60 Grit and Comstock in the same room could surely cause major cootie attacks.
Any NYC progressives wanna concern troll a DLC bootcamp?
Maybe it’s just me (OK, I’m SURE it’s prol’ly just me), but that pic looks kinda like Johnny Wadd getting ready to stand up and go do his thang.
musicsleuth @ 7
Better read than zed.
Peterr @ 9
Thanks! Fixed.
that picture makes me shudder,
blerggh
Tom says: my idea of nirvana? Sitting in a hot tub reading A Rove column in “Newsweek”. You go, Mr. former whatever!
His statement that he wanted to “bitch-slap” Krugman troubled me on many fronts. First, of course it is a further sign of the complete corruption of the “moral” right. But also, what guy talks like this? I always this sort of statement as “rude” girl talk. Is he one of the McClellan, Rove, Bolton, Gannon crowd “party boys?”
dakine01 @ 13
Ya that too!
Tanks for the memories, Tommie.
Jeebus Crackers! What a rogues gallery of neo-fascists, pseudo religious quacks and lifelong government-dole leeches.

Richmond @ 18
Who talks this way? A Pimp.
From wiki: “The term “bitch slap” is derived from American slang. In the original sense, a “bitch slap” is a powerful, full-swing slap in the face with the front of the hand, evoking the way an angry pimp might slap a defiant prostitute (not to be confused with a “pimp slap” which uses the back of the hand).”
As Mr. Delay knows all too well, the prostitutes on K Street differ only from the DC Madame in their dress code and their pricing structure.

OT:
From Edwards rally last night:
Edwards has repeatedly criticized Clinton in recent weeks, but he toned down the rhetoric after a woman in the front row complained about the New York senator and her husband, former President Bill Clinton. “I lived through the Clinton regime the first time, and I don’t want to live through it again,” the woman said.
Edwards laughed along with the audience, but then gave a diplomatic reply. “I actually think Bill Clinton was a good president, to be honest with you,” he said to applause.

Looks like teh hammer hasn’t been very successful in the blogosphere. The last post over at tomdelay.com is dated October 9th (which brings October’s posts up to a total of three). There’s also this message:
Jane,
What’s that pencil doing floating in that there hot tub?
Oh…it’s not a pencil…my bad.
You know they know the power has drifted away when their big guys start tramp-talking. We will hear more of this as the thugs continue to gurgle down the drain. Also, more of ‘it was good while it lasted.’
My big hope at this point (since I have low hopes for the Democratic presidency) is that the statute of limitations will not have run out on this band of crooks before the end of 2009. It will take at least 10 months to get a piece of the iceberg of criminality that was the Bush/rethug administration. Like any iceberg, what we see is at most 10 percent of what there is. Seeing Mr. ‘I am the government’ Delay in the pokey will be worth the waiting.
Give Mr. Delay some credit.
He managed to to learn the difficult term “bitch-slap” and even use it in a sentence. This is conservative wit on steroids!
Ed*ard Teller @ 24
*dope slap to forehead*
Of course!
I’d rather feed my hand slowly in a garbage disposal than hob-nob with the likes of Cruella DeCarville, Byron of York and Pious Tom Delay.

That image is just sooooooooooooo wrong.
Peterr @ 21
Or a dominant convict with an insolent cellmate, perhaps?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 16
A minor edit if you don’t mind?
It’s all a bit much. Tom DeLay taking a bath, Karl and Newsweek, Scott McClellan telling the truth, and George and Laura love Hillary. It’s way too much data to process. I may end up in bed or the hospital. Perhaps both.
What is he holding in his right hand? And why is his left hand hanging off the back of the hot tub. And that is serious “bling” around his neck. Strange indeed.
Why do corrupt politicians always go for the hottub? Former CT Gov. Rowland was into hottubs too– courtesy of his best buddy contractor friends.
GSD @ 30
I like Mary SSSSSNake Matalin better.
Mebbe we should start a rumor that Hot Tub Tom kidnapped Natalie Holloway. That should focus press attention.
OT
Pups, just a reminder
Christy will be on Air America about 5:15 pm ET today with Sam Seder (subbing for Randi Rhodes today).
You can listen live here.
A heart and a brain would be a better idea.
Ummm, that assessment doesn’t sound all that “dour” to me! Are the columnists taking sides here? Ahh, it’s from a major city newspaper. Silly me.

Thought Tommy wanted a quick trial. Who is holding up his chance to defend himself during his day(s) (well maybe weeks–make it months–well could be years) in court.
Whacha doin Tommy? Could be out killin cockroaches!

rightleft love you OKK.That hot tub ain’t in Texas—where ya been hangin Tommy?
Lahoma advises me that she has a slight suspicion that I am even kinkier than she thought I was. I relayed to her that I would like to see DeLay and Rove fighting over Ann Coulter in a hot tub. She said I need to get a grip.
rwcole @ 47
Left coast? Oregon, Washington?
You know ole’ Tom has some of those virtues that are really going to allow him to make friends with his fellow prisoners. That confidence he exudes with every statement he makes about how it is done in his world, absolutely endearing! That is going to make his companions warm with that glow you only get when in the presence of your leader. I can well imagine his emperor like godness in the land of orange jumpsuit and prison ink. Does pass the soap come before or after the part about
“how you doin’?
Howdy y’all!
Hey Cassie!
rwcole @ 47
Who knows? But apparently he is still considered worthy of weighing in on GOP matters. . .
Which is why Democrats are going to win in 2008
mary
Looks too dry—photoshopped in Colorado would be my guess.
Hot tubs don’t have to be sexual, right? But in Delay’s case it was. Right?
Kassie
Give that up before ya make someone sick.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 48
So what movie did you guys watch last night?

That cretin needs to stay on the other side.
rwcole @ 54
Yep. Prolly.

You can also stream the show through iTunes. in iTunes, under the ‘Library’ category in the left hand column, highlight ‘Radio’. Then, in the main iTunes window, expand the ‘Talk/spoken word’ section by clicking on the little triangle that is next to it. After the list of available stations loads, double click on Air America and you should be set to go.
SnarKassandra @ 55
I sorta see it like those pens you get as “gifts” from the bank, or the paperweights from pharmaceutical companies, etc. All made by the same cheap companies. Lobbyists and corrupt contractors must have a company that stocks up on hottubs for corrupt politiicans.
When Delay finally goes on trial maybe we could get a Saudi judge.

“Putney Swope”. And one other.
CHS up NOW
FYI – CHS is on Air America now
tw3k @ 22
I am very tempted to do it. I don’t know how I’d get a train back to Philly that night though.

THANKS !

“Putney Swope?” I seem to vaguely recall that title from my distant youth, but no clue what it’s about. Didja like it? Did Lahoma like it?
(brb – off to IMDB)
[silence from the pups as we listen to our co-leader CHS. me too, of course]

yay, Christy!
Putney Swope, the truth and soul you only dreamed about! Look for Garret Morris and so many people that became stars. I saw that sucker in a mainstream theater the year it came out. Whitey, Inc., didn’t realize what it was saying, so it got through the censors. big recommend on that one!
tw3k @ 78
Christine Pelosi will be at FDL Book Salon this Saturday 11/24 to discuss her book with Jane Hamsher. Should be fun!
Chris Matthews has spent yet another day on the Scott McClellan story. So far he’s spent half of his show on it. His last line was something like, “They’ve successfully shut this story down. Only 3 times since the Libby sentencing has there been anything on the nightly news about the Plame story. Good job, Mr. President!” That good job was definitely meant tongue in cheek. Gotta admit, I’m pretty proud of him. He’s truly incredulous about what a mess this administration made of this. He’s seriously disgusted about the war, and about the Plame story. Good for him. At least he recognizes all this, more than I can say for many.
TeddySanFran @ 81
Indeed! She turned off user feedback on the BootCamp Facebook page. :’(
tw3k @ 78
Is this the same thing that this Saturday’s Book Salon is about?
I bought a copy of Putney Swope based on my memories of the movie- the memories were better than the movie- but their were some good lines…..one of the best…..”No Shit?” fans will know what scene that’s from.
Is CHS done on AirAmerica? All I’m getting are commercials.
Tweety was bitchin recently that ya can’t get good ratings if yer “fair and balanced”—guess that means that KO was out polling him. He may have decided to join the force.

My eyes just burned a bit, OK , a lot.
Ann in AZ @ 82
Honestly, after seeing Jon Stewart’s interview with about his book, I really don’t believe Mathews is ever “truly incredulous” or “seriously disgusted” about anything.
Oh, I take that back; he was incredulous that Jon found his book’s theme that success required (and is worth) saying whatever is necessary to get ahead.
behindthefall @ 74
And democracy…enjoy it while it lasts!
OT, and I hope this is OK.
I just put up my Thanksgiving post. It’s about poverty and Bush and the problems that families have.
I’m just wondering what kind of “backbone” Tom’s looking for. It sounds like he’d really like to see the republicans put an end to life as we know it by dropping one (1) JDAM on Iran.
I bet very few of the GOP conger-eels would like to be explaining $6 a gallon gas to the voters in this election. :o)
The stock market is shitting green nickels, as we speak. I bet THEY don’t want to see the effects of $200 ppb of oil, on the world economy. :o)
And, as always, I don’t believe that CentCom (which STILL has a full plate, last time I looked) wants to find out how the Iraqi Shia will react if bush, OR Israel, decides to go for the Iranian reactors.
Or maybe Tom is just longing for bush, no doubt inspired by Musharaff’s foray into upfront dictatorship, to declare that we don’t really need to spend all that money and energy on a pesky election, after all.
I understand his paranoia about the GOP getting hammered next year, but I think the malathion is kicking in and making it worse.

Hey Jane, shouldn’t we save the Tom for the Turkey Day? ;)
Oh. As far as Tom trying to whip up the Clinton-froth goes; I think he’s a bit premature.
The Iowa voters will have a say in that matter.
:o)
Tanbark @ 95
Is that a sexual reference?
I matters very little to me that “these people” will be gone from politics next cycle. The fact that they’ll have scuttled back into their sewers does not make me happy. They need to be fumigated and eliminated by some sort of complete exposure and education about what they’ve done, and why it’s killing our constitution and way of life.
Since the conglomerates are their owners, I doubt this will be done by the MSM.
Why is Tom Delay not in jail?
BTW, that picture…it honestly makes my physically sick. Is’nt there another that could be used? I’m not kidding when I say I can’t stand it.
Hey all-the happiest of Thanksgivings to you all.
OT and should have been upthread, but you have to go over to Digby ASAP to see the video of the guy who got tasered for a speeding violation in Utah. If you want to see how a police state operates, this is your manual. It is frightening because it is true. It’s your worst nightmare.

For the same reason that we don’t hear much about J. Abramoff and the many people who should be either in jail or preparing to enter jail relating to his testimony. Nothing will be done by this DOJ. I am surprised that Abramoff is in the clinker.

It seems to be encased in amber.
Knut Wicksell-
You’re right, this is amazing (yet not surprising anymore). To my knowledge, not doing what a cop tells you to do, without considerably more, is not a crime.
Although, I could be wrong. Legislatures have been busily making ordinary exercising of one’s constitutional rights criminal in the past few years.

That is true; that interview was bitchin’! But Chris has been on this subject and the war for quite a while now. He does better than many, probably because he got tutored by David Schuster, who is one of us. David seldom gets any detail of the whole Plame ordeal even slightly wrong; one of the few truly good journalists left if you ask me.
MaryMac@96: Are you serious? I have no idea what you’re talking about.
What I was talking about is that conservatives across the board salivate like rabid dogs at the mention of the word “Hillary”.
“Sexist” or not, that’s the stone truth.
DeLay walks in tiny little fairy steps. Bush waves with a sweet fairy hand to no one. Jeff Gannon is a journalist.Odd times we live in.
tejanarusa @ 114
Well I’m laughing! And am certainly taking that as a compliment :)
Bolton- the Atticus Finch of the U. N. because he always earnestly makes his case?
Well, I guess that makes Adolf Hitler the Atticus Finch of Nazi Germany, because he always earnestly made his case, too.
Is Clusterfuck gettin his bird down in the Crawford Pig Farm?
Some of Romney’s opponents are apparently pointing out that he’s a mormon.
Baptists shouting from the rooftops:

Like ta see a little footage of GW Clusterfuck gettin attacked by his Thanksgiving Turkey….don’t think Clusterfuck’s much of a country boy. He won’t be dressing his bird- well not in THAT way anyhow.
TeddySanFran @ 98
Why are Dick Armitage, Ari Fleischer, Scooter Libby, Karl Rove, Alberto Gonzales and Ann Coulter also not in jail?
Is there even one person in the Bush administration who isn’t a criminal or guilty of treason?
rwcole @ 123
Why should he get that special treatment? After all, they all call for the illegal war to continue and that makes ‘em all morons (except for Ron Paul).
