The AMPTP has agreed to go back to the negotiating table with the WGA on November 26. In anticipation, the AMPTP took out an ad in Variety that was a bit factually challenged.
Phil Robinson turns the tables and gives some story notes.
Meanwhile, Nikki Fink writes about the coverage that the strike has been getting in Variety:
When the strike is over, and one day far into the future that will be true, media critics may have a field day dissecting the slanted coverage and total fabrications which Variety is reporting in these early days of the strike. But for now, I’ll do it. How much longer is this going to be allowed to continue by parent company Reed Business? The trade’s Jason Blairs — oh, excuse me, Josef Adalian and Dave McNary — keep inventing stories which purport to show that less than 2 weeks into the strike wither the WGA’s resolve is withering, and/or its writers are going back to work, and/or even its late show iconic hosts are going to double-cross their teams of scribes. Just one problem: those stories are either totally fabricated or highly exaggerated, made worse by headlines which are not borne out by the content of the articles. The latest is Variety’s bullshit article today that the late night hosts may be going back to work after Thanksgiving while their teams of writers walk the picket lines. I guarantee you this is not the case and no plans are underway. My info is that NBC is putting heat on Conan O’Brien to come back earlier than anyone but he’s resisting. I hear no one is telling Dave or Jay or Craig what to do, and they’re not even thinking about it. And I know that Jon Stewart is saying privately that he won’t even consider coming back until 2008 at the earliest. At the same time, the AMPTP keeps taking out expensive full-page ads in Variety to state its case — as if the trade’s editorial pages aren’t doing a ridiculously good job of that already. I, for one, am perplexed but also sad to see the day-by-day destruction of Variety’s credibility and trust (well, as much as a trade which has always been in the pocket of the Industry can engender…)
Variety is a publication whose revenues are generated in large part by (surprise!) the studios. Unfortunately, many people who are affected by the strike are looking toward it for factual information on a issue that directly impacts their future.
Kind of like throwing a lit match onto a pile of gasoline-soaked rags, you know?

Jane!
every studio person I’ve heard on air has been factually challenged…
Jane!
Thank you, Jane. That was exhausting!
The poison that is the Republican Party is epitomized by three statements: 1) Unions are bad 2)Welfare Queen 3)Socialized Medicine..These three “truths” push “lizard brain” buttons and have caused Americans to vote against their own interests.
What? No Daily Show until January at the soonest? Good for Jon!
Variety’s coverage is a perfect example of the the H.L. Mencken quote:
“Never argue with a man whose job depends on not being convinced.”
Kind of like throwing a lit match onto a pile of gasoline-soaked rags, you know?
Actually, heaving a Molotov cocktail is more apropo…
Steve-AR @ 5
Funny, I hear “Welfare Queen” and automatically think of Jonah Goldberg.
TRex @ 9
Hmmm… Podherz, Wolfowitz, Perle, Rove, etc…
Why shouldn’t the union be responsible for getting out the Facts to the writers?
Who thought Variety was there for the benefit of the Workers?
Not I.
TRex @ 9
More like a Welfare Whale that one.
Old Coastie, if you’re about the Sacramento Bee has an article on Issa’s involvement.
I am utterly speechless…
Channeling Dick Cheney
By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
Published: November 18, 2007
I have no idea who is going to win the Democratic presidential nomination, but lately I’ve been wondering whether, if it is Barack Obama, he might want to consider keeping Dick Cheney on as his vice president.

He is truly fried…
Jane,
And could one say that Variety has a “vested interest” in the end of the strike?
After all, what possibly could Variety have to write about if there’s no new stuff on TV?
One might surmise that Variety ain’t interested in re-runs because it would be really hard to sell the same stories again as “new”.
Shorter Variety: “Git yer old news here. Cold and old as yer granny’s grave. Yep, that’s all we got is old news.”
CTuttle @ 14
Straight out of the onion universe. Obamas mentor, Joe Lieberman, would never sit by and let Barack pass him up for another chance at the VP spot.
TPM. I’ll let this speak for itself.
Campaigning in New Hampshire today, John McCain, well aware of the Iraq war’s unpopularity, insisted that he’s been a critic of the administration’s approach for years.
McCain also notes, especially for anti-war voters, that he was an early critic of the war strategy waged by former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld.
“The strategy was going to fail with Rumsfeld. I fought against. I spoke against,” he said.
Loo Hoo. @ 13
thanks!
Mad Dogs @ 15
I think you are right.
I worked in tv the last time there was a WGA strike, and as I recall, everything came to a halt. I worked in development at a studio. Nada meetings…except a few outside lunches. Everything was Off The Record.
Loo Hoo. @ 17
Didn’t he go on the stroll through a Baghdad market with Lindsey, when he picked up five rugs for $5? Hmmm…
wow! It stayed on the rec list for the entire day!
but it is slowly slipping into the sunset and now maybe I can go do some grocery shopping.
OldCoastie @ 21
Congrats, OC! Job well done!
This was good to see that one Presidential candidate get it and can show up for the writers!

I’ve been pleased, CT – didn’t dissolve into a “fist fight” in the comments, no trolls (one idiot)… seemed to do what was intended.
may try it again some day.
OldCoastie @ 21
I got an email about the situation today from a gal in Vista who keeps up with things. I wrote her back about your diary, and she said that’s where she got her info! You’re hot, girl! Are you going to Netroots Nation?
OldCoastie @ 23
If I may, what was your take from the tip jar? *g*
Thanks for posting this one. My husband’s been picketing since the strike began. He tells me that it will be a long one, but holds out hope, being the optimist that he is.
After having lived through the 1988 strike and exhausting most of our savings, we hope the writers get what they need sooner than later.
And we don’t appreciate Variety’s biased reporting. This is difficult enough.
You and Jon Stewart (among others) just made my day.
CTuttle @ 25
uh, I dunno! let me go look… did pick up TU status – fun from the standpoint you can look at the hidden comments!
I hardly ever comment over there, so I’ve never been able to look behind the curtian
UPDATE: 165 tips! if that was dollars, we could all go have ourselves some beers!
I’ve missed LS today.
But at least the Clinton Library has a green roof.
off topic, sorry
if this happens the dollar will collapse
if opec starts trading gasoline in another currency look for all the paper we’ve spread around the world to start getting unloaded here
that means they will try to buy our assets, buildings, bussinesses, they will over pay, they will do anything to get rid of the dollar
look for 25 percent inflation, inflation worse then viet nam days
this was the real reason bush sr attacked Iraq, saddam was threatening to trade petro in euros
if this happens we are in tons of trouble
OldCoastie @ 27
TU? I rarely read DK… Much less comment or Diary…
trusted user – let’s you troll rate people… (I’d rather not have the responsibility, frankly)
OldCoastie @ 21
Your 12 hours of fame!
Loo Hoo. @ 24
nope, not going to Netroots… did your friend get hit up by the petitioners in Vista?
Joan Walsh on who won the Newsweek primary. Markos or Rove?
OldCoastie @ 31
Ahh, Power…! *g*
No, Old Coastie, she reads Kos religiously.
Loo Hoo. @ 29
I’ll have to bike over and check it out.
OldCoastie @ 28
Dang!
The WGA strike is the seminal economic event of our day. Labor has lost power since the 1960s for a variety of reasons and methods, all of then deliberately anti-labor.
Developed economies must rely on intellectual & creative property to continue to thrive. As for the U.S., movies, TV, etc. are primary engines of growth. Writers are the fundamentals, despite the fact that ‘talent’ gets most of the dough. If writers can’t get a fair shake, then the labor in all other industires is surely lost. This is where it’s at. Bonne chance.
perris @ 30
It should be interesting (in a car wreck watching sort of way) what will happen tomorrow in the oil markets considering this whack at the dollar. The current oil market is dominated by pure speculation and this has to be red meat for speculators.
Loo Hoo. @ 34
The gloves need to come off…
“With Rove calling Clinton a bitch, why couldn’t Kos open with a tough-but-fair column on Giuliani ethics problems the mainstream media have been reluctant to put together, from Bernie Kerik to Alan Placa?”
I concur 100%…
peanutbutter @ 39
Is a tip the same as a recommend? I recommended your diary!
CTuttle @ 42
Baloney. Truth needs to continue to be told. And kos needs to be who he is. He is not Karl Rove (and aren’t we all glad). OUr side ir right and we need to stick to our knitting and our principles.
One caveat: Rove started with an engaging, but telling (or so he’d like you to believe) anecdote. kos can and should learn how to do that.
I dunno, LooHoo – I’m not wise in the ways of Kos… there was quite the sizable list of recommends and that was very nice.
I think the tips are what land in the “tip jar”.
How’s kos to the the campaign insiders? Clinton was too easy for Rove, but like Joan said, who really cares if she had a mirror in her office? That’s really searching for something to knock. A stretch.
My favorite TV show is “Smallville” (just the thing for a street musician attempting to alter the course of civilization).
I found this at Kryptonsite:
Truth, Just Us, and the American Way!
How’s kos to get the campaign insiders (republican I mean) to smack them? Which he wouldn’t do over something as goofball as a mirror anyway.
These people are truly evil:……..
As president, Romney told Headline News talk show host Glenn Beck, he would reduce federal highway funds to any state that issued driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.
The former Massachusetts governor got in a dig at GOP rival former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee while explaining his view on tuition breaks for undocumented workers.
“If you have a state like Mike Huckabee’s state in Arkansas that fights to give people a tuition break if they’re an illegal in their state, you say, ‘no, you’re not going to do that,’ ” Romney explained. “If you do that, we’re going to cut back on higher education funding.”

He can imagine himself in the oval office and what he sees in the mirror-Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the most powerful prez of theem all?
eCAHNomics @ 43
This started the paragraph, eCahn…
“Which alarmed me. Rove is using the pages of Newsweek to call the leading Democrat a bitch. Moulitsas is taking the high road to explain how, looking at the Bush record rationally, the Democrats simply can’t lose. If this is a preview of the political season to come, Democrats are toast.”
Screw the high road…
CTuttle, I think that if Hillary is the nominee Bill will eviscerate Karl Rove. And that the MSM will report it!
I have a feeling Rove is seriously afraid of Bill… don’t know why, but that’s what I think.
Screw the high road…
Ct, let’s say you and me take a stroll down to your ma and pa’s. Sit on the lanai. Chill. ??
:) It’s Sunday nite. It could be good.
CTuttle @ 52
I agree..there is a political line that separates “them” from “us” and like SCOTUS I am not sure where the line is, but I know it when I see it. But taking a beating and being nice isn’t across the line.
Ctuttle@52
Reasonable people can disagree about this, and I’m a big fan of vigorous defense.
But here’s my take on ‘bipartasianship’.
I am hoping that voters recognize the difference between smeers and legitiamate criticism, as long as Ds respond appropriately to ’swift boating.’ (Which Kerry didn’t.)
kos is laying it out in words of one syllable, simple declarative sentences. Don’t underestimate the ability of real folks to understand this.
The alternative is that we become who we hate.
Loo Hoo. @ 52
Bill is a potent weapon in her arsenal, which saddens me, as I’d hoped for a better choice as front runner… DK or Edwards, since Gore ain’t running…
Loo Hoo. @ 52
Well then, what tf is he waiting on? He is supposed to be above all else our party’s leader! And why didn’t he do it years ago if indeed he can eviscerate Rove? This is subtly suggesting he wont suport a nominee or the party unless HC is the nominee.. Which may be an important point considering his front stage silence on the egregious governance under neocons over the last few years.
Eureka Springs @ 58
he’s in an awkward spot – if he defends her, it will be said she is not strong enough to defend herself… if he does not defend her, he looks like a cad… tricky balancing act.
Carpe Diem, Mousilitas… O’Really has’em pegged already! No harm done… *g*
Old Coastie, you did good!!!!
Cry me a river. *g*
To repeat myself. I’m a cynic & a defeatist. But in one way I’m an idealist. I think truth-telling has an amazing influence. kos should keep on keeping on, while learning how to write more engagingly.
ES, I believe Bill took on Chris Wallace quite nicely. The dems have been too scardey to use Bill cuz of the blue dress, I think. Gore most of all.
I was just looking at Glenn Greenwald’s Sunday offering. Apparently no one told the op-ed contributors at the Times to lay off the acid or at least not write their columns until they had safely come off what were obviously rocky trips.
As crazy as Tom Friedman and Maureen Dowd are, I think the prize has got to go to the incomparably goofy duo of Fred “I thought up the surge” Kagan and Michael O’Hanlon (you know that guy from the “liberal” Brookings Institute). They want to steal Pakistan’s nukes. These guys are so supernally dim that it really taxes my descriptive abilities to encompass and express what complete and absolute loons they are. Being wrong often and disastrously apparently is not only not an obstacle to appearing in the New York Times but practically a requisite.
http://www.salon.com/opinion/g…..index.html for Greewald
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11…..ref=slogin for goofs who are proud of it
I have to say — I love how the “talent” has been handling this strike– actors going out to march with the striking workers– this is a big deal and they clearly get it, understanding how important the job of the writers is.
I also love how the writers are putting their natural talents to use through the various videos they’ve produced. Having (a year ago) devoted two years of my life to a union drive that went down in flames, it’s heartening to see people push back in a really positive way.
So, you’re cynicdefidealistic?
Whatever it is, it works. You question. You’re a realist and you want things to be better.
eCAHNomics @ 57
eCAHN now you’ve got me all annoyed again about Ron Browstein. lol!
eCAHNomics @ 63
At what juncture would it cross the line? Oh, IOKIYAR… My Bad! Sorry…
Loo Hoo. @ 64
Exactly.. Why hasn’t he been doing that since 6 months after Gore lost to the Supremes?
No excuses, not anymore.
Attack!
Eureka Springs @ 59
Bill doesn’t have it in him to do that. In Rove’s piece he gives an accurate portrayal of Bill and Hillary. I think the “pop psych” take on Bill trying to be nice and “find common ground” is the result of alcoholic, dysfunctional family with a lot of fighting and violence.
Hillary does and I think she smells victory with every bitch comment. MoDo is replaying her cute stuff with Hillary like she did with Gore. Taylor Marsh rips her to shreds.
Hugh @ 66
I found this trio completely chilling. Not my country.
Eureka Springs @ 70
I’d like to hear Howard Dean’s roar again…
AZ Matt @ 61
Thanks, Matt! Youngsters should irritate me more often! ;-)
Oh dear, now I’m in trouble.
Trying to steer a middle road. Always what I try to do and often attacked from both sides.
So let me try to clarify.
(If I say it one more time, and a little bit LOUDER, surely everyone will understand.)
Vigorous when warranted defense, but even-keeled truth telling on the offense.
I really don’t want to become them. Do you?
Hugh @ 65
*sigh* Hugh, did you not read the last thread…? ;-)
Eureka Springs @ 59
Actually, I believe that Ms. Huffington wrote on this awhile back. She opined that Bill has not been loyal to the Democratic Party and effectively abandoned us. ALL that he’s done over these past years has only been in efforts to advance Hillary; instead of engaging in efforts to advance the general welfare of the Democratic Party.
In corporate America…and also in law, I think the Ethics experts would say of Bill that he’s had a classic conflict of interest.
Ghostman
That’s an interesting take, Steve AR. Let’s see what happens if Hillary is the nominee. Bet he comes unglued if there are charges against Hillary that are untrue.
And who should she choose as her running mate???
eCAHNomics @ 76 -
i’d like to think that the strength and energy brought to a fight is not measured in the number of lies or the number of people destroyed.
OldCoastie! Great work!
This is kinda random, but does anyone out there know about the parameters for a “citizen arrest”? This popped into my mind after reading all about your efforts. I will google, but put it out there in case anyone knows right off.
My sister in CA was actually subject to a citizen’s arrest for speeding, once upon a time.
Obviously, I am wondering if a “citizen arrest” might have been possible in the petition case.
Loo Hoo. @ 79
Edwards. I betcha.
eCAHNomics @ 76
No, I don’t. But when everything is so wrongly reported it gets so frustrating. Thank god for the tubz. The lefty blogs really are making a difference. Who would have guessed that Markos would be contributing at Newsweek two years ago? Bet Netroot Nation will be hopping this summer just before the election!
CTuttle @ 77
LOL, I stand corrected.
selise @ 80
Thanks. Given that you don’t let yourself be destroyed. Vigorous (but intelligent) defense.
Oh, and BTW, let’s also try to minimize fights, as pie-in-the-sky as that may sound.
Valley Girl @ 80
I’ve got no idea! I wouldn’t have tried it anyway – those 2 boys were LOTS bigger than me… otoh, they looked pretty stupid gettin’ into a wrestling match over the clipboard with a tiny, older woman! (and I still won!)
Ghostman @ 78
Arianna seems to treat Hillary is just the way MoDo does. Is it jealousy?
eCAHNomics @ 75
Aah, as Mr Miyagi say; “…squished like grape!” I mean no harm, I’m pissed that reason and sanity is drowned out by that Noise Machine… New lines have been drawn, and, ‘We the People’ ain’t doing the drawing…
Ha! My revenge. My 26-year-old wingnut son is moving to Austin after ThxG. I’ll be there to harrass him at NRN.
Valley Girl @ 81
I was thinking about going to my local Walmart and/or Target wearing a Bush sticker or pin. I will bring my cell phone that has a camera. If I find someone trying to sell the petition for something it is not I will take a quick photo of the document. Of course, I will have to con them into handing over the clip board so I can read it. Maybe I will take my husband along to help. We make a pretty good almost old couple. Maybe we could blanket the state with some kind of tactic like this.
Loo Hoo. @ 87
There is a difference between not agreeing on the issues a la Arianna and the mindless harpie babble of Dowd.
Excellent eCAHN!! I’ll look forward to meeting you!
Hugh @ 91
Maureen needs to go home and eat a box of tasty creme doughnuts. It will make her feel much better.
mary – they didn’t hestitate handing me the clipboard, but I was listening and nodding at that point… I knew I wanted to get my own look… they may be more relaxed with a Bush pin… mostly they were hitting up young individuals with kids or couples with kids… kids are the perfect distraction.
at least with a cell phone its easy to hold in your hand without being suspicious…
marymccurnin @ 90
I’m just going to take the entire clipboard and leave. Straight to the nearest police department.
Loo Hoo. @ 79
I think, if she is the nominee, he will want to rip the guts out of Republicans who attack her. The problem is that she is a “girl”. If he defends her, she is weak, if she admits error, she is weak and we can’t have a weak Commander in Chief can we; not with all the terrists.
Wes Clark??
marymccurnin @ 90
Let your husband carry the cell phone. Let your huge unzipped handbag fall onto the sidewalk. Include a large open bag of pennies that go rolling every where. Create total confusion. Turn around and set down the clipboard so that your husband can do the photos, while you are saying omigod, omigod, I am so sorry.
Loo Hoo. @ 92
Well, It’ll be an experience for all of us. Guess it’ll set a record for netroots. And that’s good.
Valley Girl @ 98
oh my, you are delectably devious!
and possibly straight into a holding cell!
don’t steal the clipboard!
Evidence, Old Coastie, as to the means.
Valley Girl @ 98
Perfect. Like a little play.
Hugh @ 91
Very true but it is interesting that when HuffPo does an unfavorable piece about Hillary, they tend to use unflattering pictures of her. The thing that drew my attention was the fact that if Jane does a piece that is tough on Hillary, she uses a very nice picture of Hillary. Jane has real class.

Giuliani appears to be clueless (what else is new) giving his major
“Let’s Escape from The Clutches of Middle East Oil Dependancy”…
to NASCAR…
“Giuliani likened the pursuit of energy independence and the development of alternative energy sources to the race to put a man on the moon several decades ago.
“Now it’s a matter truly of national security,” Giuliani said. “We have to pursue all of those alternatives that exist.”
…after riding around a lap in the Pace Car….
..and bragging that he’s attended NASCAR races twice before this year
…and rode in the pace car each time
But he had to do it again…just to give Judy the thrill of burning up all that fuel!
There is no truth to the rumor that Judy said “I haven’t had so much fun since the days when I put dogs to sleep.”
Myrtle June @ 23
thanks for posting this. As an Edwards supporter I’m very proud that Edwards is supporting the strike. What a shame that Variety is not.
marymccurnin @ 82
Won’t happen and as an Edwards supporter I’d be extremely upset if it did.
