Arrgh. Did I say “boiler-room”?…I meant “boiler-plate” essay. In other words, try to have her write individualized essays. She can include all her personal skills in each one…but she should take notes about each school after looking through their catalogs. She should write down the things that she likes about it, maybe do a quick look at the web sites for the Departments/Programs/Professors she’s interested in, and then sit down for an hour and dream about what she could do with her education at that school.

Every school will open up a different pathway of possibilities.

it took me awhile to decipher - you don’t want to do any free advertising for anyone who wants to help att vacuum the net for our gubmnt. yes?

yeap, they were calling themselves the wahoo yahoos and i was just pointing that out along with an alternative yoohoos

thanks gw - that gives your weekend bonus points (laughing)

That was me Suzanne. I suggested the Wahoo Yahoos. I did consider the Yahoo (organisation) link but dammit, yahoo (non-capital) is a great word and I hate to see great words stolen.

Which I would say puts her in the 1 in 100.

Make sure that she provides a link to her best writing on the blog. But one that isn’t too filled with net-lingo. You’ve shared several with us and I’ve been impressed.

Also tailoring each application to what the school has to offer in terms of her interests is really useful. Showing that the prospective student knows something about the University environment, the Department offerings, faculty, and how all of that will be important to her reaching her dreams is quite useful. A lot of students send out boiler-room presentations that are so generalized that the Admissions board thinks “The gals great, but she’s gonna get in somewhere else…and not getting into our school isn’t gonna disappoint her.”

Make the application essay personalized to the school and they’ll think…”she’s got to get in here”!

great advice. thanks.

Hear Hear !!!

Perhaps we could have a wall of suggestions and ask various alumni to source information for her.

That is excellent — so many universities and colleges have full tuition slots. If anyone knows about these, please share.

Cassie usually reads the comments during the following day … Cas, get this started on Facebook
or your own Blog and ask the Firepups to contribute info.
