Please add to the you’re-never-too-old-to-learn-to-tapdance list Bay Area artist Michael Grbich. He recently learned to tapdance, with a specific goal in mind. He accomplished his goal today, to celebrate his seventy-fifth birthday.
A fog horn sounded on the Golden Gate Bridge Sunday morning, followed by the sounds of the big band tune, “Hey Big Spender!”
A red and white Capezio tap shoe emerged from the fog, and out popped 75-year-old Michael Grbich, of Oakland, who tap danced his way across the landmark bridge – just because he could.
Followed by an entourage of confetti-tossing grandchildren, neighbors and a friend with an iPod boom box, Grbich spent 20 minutes dancing the 1.7-mile span grinning, blowing kisses and striking poses for curious tourists.
He threw in some Rockette kicks, whirled a jumprope over his head like a helicopter, and grabbed the rails to shimmy shimmy cocopuff toward the traffic like a man too sexy for his shirt, which read: “Celebrating 75 trips around the sun.”
Goal-setting is very important to a well-purposed life (they say) but learning to tap-dance in order to tap-dance across the Golden Gate Bridge to celebrate your seventy-fifth birthday strikes me as an altogether audacious, entirely non-purposeful, and essentially hopeful endeavour.
And on that note, I’d like to throw the floor open to all of you. Any big, stupendous, wouldn’t-tell-my-best-friend-for-fear-of-being-mocked goals on your list, FirePups? Any entirely silly and anti-pragmatic accomplishments you plan to rack up in the next five years? Ten years? Within a week? By the end of the year? Do you need to dust off January’s Resolutions list and see what you might complete in the next (yikes!) five weeks?
I’m thinking of goals that conjugate the verb “to-do” rather than the verb “to-buy.” A round-the-world cruise on the Queen Mary II might be doing something spectacular, but it’s essentially buying something. I imagine your goals have more to do with “doing” than “buying.”
There’s a flip-side of goal-setting as well. Perhaps more is learned from failure than from success. Is there anything you’ve spectacularly failed at — that then became a touchstone or an object lesson? Is there an unintended consequence of an unmet goal that you’d like to share with the rest of us?
Tonight’s Late Nite topic: Goals and the FirePups who have them. Discuss.
Or, if you prefer, simply tell us how you celebrated your accomplishment:
Like all dances, it eventually had to come to an end. But before it did, more friends gathered at the San Francisco end of the span to congratulate him.
“I love you. You’re famous!” said one child, running into his arms.
When the iPod clicked off, Grbich bent down and kissed the ground. Then he got on his back and did some snow angel moves on the concrete. When he was done thanking the day, he hopped back up and looked at the small crowd of about 60 friends and local reporters. He didn’t miss a beat.
“Party at my house!”
(YouTube: inadvertent video by Sahra and newtonusr from the Bear Creek FirePups MeetUp Number One. At the core of our party, we had a goal: ITMFA!)

h/t to newspaperbrat, who told me about Michael Grbich’s plan for an epic tap-dance across the Golden Gate.

Upside down, right?
Fox and friends
TVNewser has learned that a small area of the Fox News Channel newsroom has evidence of insects believed to be bed bugs.
TeddySanFran @ 12
upsidedown looking to hell – all i could see was the soles of his wee little feet as i heaped the dirt on him while saying the ritual prayer
SnarKassandra @ 6
Hey SK — that is a terrific goal, and one way to meet that goal is by making every grade in evry class a mini-goal towards the big one. From this point on, everything counts. (But, no pressure!)
TeddySanFran @ 15
This semester every class is in the 90’s except physics 88. And two of my classes are above 95. How’s that?
SnarKassandra @ 6
And so you should!
:-)
smapdi @ 13
hahahaha serves the nasty buggers right – i hope the bedbugs dont get cooties from the faux newsies
finished watching the slideshow, thanks Teddy!
TeddySanFran @ 12
You got a St. Joseph statue?!
Token really is the cutest dog in his weight category, and he managed to get himself into a large percentage of the photos :0)
Suzanne I love that sunburst art on your wall! Got a huge empty space above my desk and I can’t figure out what to put there.
smapdi @ 13
We need a digg-not so much button for these idiots.
smapdi @ 13
And Orally in Afghanistan! Wonder if he took our brave troops a gift from the newsroom?
Teddy, just finished watching the slideshow — fantastic pics, and thanks so much for sharing them! Looks like a fine time was definitely had by all :-)
SnarKassandra @ 16
Super! Keep it up, girlfriend.
Dayam, that’s a long distance to tap-dance… *g*
(((((((TSF!)))))))
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 19
I especially enjoyed applying the Special Effects to Suzanne’s kiss of our Special Celebrity Guest, Scarlet P. The Freeway Blogger
SnarKassandra @ 16
THAT is OUTSTANDING!
Evening all. Dreaming of a white Turkeyday here in western Montana (along with having to clear my windshield in the morning).
Love the inadvertent videos. Teddy, it was great to see you again!
And to answer your challenge in the post, my current way-out-there goal is to help restore constitutional democracy. Or at least have true Congressional oversight and an effective, nonpartisan Department of Justice. Is that really so much to ask?
LoudounLib @ 23
I am missing everyone already. My goal is to have a pups slumber party at my house in Rancho in the spring.
madmommy @ 20
Teddy brought the St Joseph’s statue for me – we were gonna do it yesterday after scarlet p arrived but we got all distracted with the impeach signs and talking and having fun. I hope newton shows up tonight to share his link to the other utube.
token passed out last night after everyone left – working the crowd is tough on a small dog – he was acting today as if he was hung over, lagging – even my neighbors commented that he was one tired dog today.
the sunburst art was my housewarming gift from my sister. she painted it and it hangs on my exterior wall out on the deck.
SnarKassandra @ 16
It’s a good start. Keep up the good work and you will reach your larger goals.
Lovely slideshow! I see all y’all used nametags too ;-)
Suzanne @ 18
More likely blood poisoning. 8~)
CTuttle @ 25
ct, newspaperbrat was telling us yesterday that she was going to be one of the folks greating him as he reached the south end of the bridge.
LoudounLib @ 23
I highly recommend the FirePup MeetUp. You’ve got quite a NoVa/DeeCee crew, including some front-pagers, nearby, no?
You have to come up with a cool name for your FirePup Krewe, tho. We’re the Bear Creek FirePups. Neither NorCal nor CentCal seemed romantic enough, and since we met at Bear Creek and the California flag has a bear, it seemed appropriate.
Plus there was a vote. It was our only “business” moment, except for learning how to FreeWay blog, as seen in the YouTube.
And all my academic classes are honors. But not journalism and Spanish and athletics.
Suzanne @ 32
To my deep embarrassment…
inadvertent #2
what did y’all vote on?
goals. hmm.
the year of my divorce i decided to learn to rollerblade. I’d never managed to learn to rollerskate but what the heck. I did learn and loved it. My kids still howl with laughter when they bring up the subject of me propping myself up with a mop and a broom out on the sidewalk. Glad there were no cell phone cameras around back then.
Current goals? More along the lines of just enduring.
Firepup: Petrocelli
Goal: To live forever or die in the attempt (H/T Yossarian)
Evenin’ all !
Suzanne @ 32
Ah, well, my quest for something to fill the empty space above my desk continues.
A friend desperately did the St. Joseph thing, but she didn’t realize that she should use a small version of the statue. Her hubby had to dig a hole nearly 3 feet deep to bury it, took all afternoon.
newtonusr @ 39
oh newton, i love this – eg’s laughter is so infectious – and it really is representative of how the bear creek firepups spent the day – laughing.
Teddy, are we supposed to say a goal we already finished??? Did I do it wrong?
My goals are, in order of their coming to mind:
Defeating Don Young
Defeating Lyda Green
Making my new blog work
Keeping my wife happy
Keeping my dog happy
Writing as much music as I can find the time for
and,
attacking, Attacking, ATTACKING, ATTACKING!!!
SnarKassandra @ 38
Even better. With that kind of record, you really should be able to write your own ticket pretty much anywhere.
Impeach!
Petrocelli @ 42
Gawd. I haven’t thought of Yossarian in years.
Well then Teddy, one of my goals will be to try and round up some of the NoVA/Dee Cee-ers to see whether we can plan a meetup, and we’ll definitely think of a cool name for the krewe.
Bear Creek FirePups is a great krewe name!
I fell into a goal: trying to make sense of the economy. A bit abstract, tyring to figure out what the HeLL was going on the U.S., and possibly of no great effect on me now in the land of oz.
Despite, or maybe because of, one course at the University of Cincinnati, where I finished the final exam well but walked out thinking, “These guys are full of crap!”
That was years ago and only last year did I start my study. 2004 and -05 were kind of a haze, seeing my late wife die of cancer and medical treatment.
As I began to come out of that fog and pay attention to current events last year, I realised “Bloody hell, they’ve stopped publishing the M3, doom is at hand.” And OK I was later than some to realise the housing market was a catastrophe waiting to happen.
Every bad thing I expected months ago came to pass, and more to come. And though I don’t have the academic credentials of Hank Paulson, I can laugh at his “sound dollar” fatuousness!
I’m still tossing a coin to see whether banana republic happens before the next election. If there is one.
pb, we shamelessly stole the nametag idea from the socal pup meetup – even token wore his name tag most of the afternoon – it was on his blue (natch) bandanna.
Teddy! you are looking fantastic! Kisses to everyone from the other coast.
Petrocelli @ 42
was he the one who was always trying to be bored because time streched, thus he was living longer?
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 41
My current goal is to hike up to the high mountain lakes in the Bitterroots and Rattlesnake and camp. Was on track last summer until I got smoked out. It is a bit of a job for a fat old man whose life is generally fairly sedentary.
CTuttle @ 25
And a long time to wait to learn, as well!
hey moose – i’m with ya on that coin toss.

marymccurnin @ 49
I read Catch 22 when I was 13 and decided that was the ultimate goal … *g*
egregious @ 30
Hi, and no, it’s not!
At this point my goal is simply to get the kiddos to adulthood without them beating each other senseless.
My poor dog has a more immediate and pressing goal, however. Her blankie is in the dryer, and she is pacing about like an expectant father waiting for the buzzer to sound. Poor pup has about 20 more minutes to suffer.
Aside from a NoVA/Dee Cee firepup meetup, the goal I’m most working towards right now is getting ready for retirement from my current job (5 years away), and taking all of the free classes and seminars at the academy that I can get away with, in order to prepare myself for some other kind of job post-retirement. Definitely no more public safety, but I’m not sure just what yet.
DrDick @ 55

Awesome! Why would ya wanna leave such a tranquil scene? ;-)
TeddySanFran @ 64
Not in Texas.
Those pics are wonderful. And I LOVED the vids last night. You folks look like you had a wonderful time. Hope I can make the next meet up.
Ed*ard Teller @ 46
Wow, what a civic-minded and comprehensive list!
my immediate goal is to get another tsf hug – teddy gives the best hugs evah
ct, there are spots in oregon and washing that are just as pretty if not prettier and just as tranquil. my long term goal is to find one and move there.
LoudounLib @ 50
I propose Goose Creek FirePups.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 54
He was always trying to get out of serving, by faking all kinds of illnesses (I see everything twice) … like Klinger did in M*A*S*H.
Kathryn in MA @ 53
Hi there! You are part of the Original FirePup Krewe, the Lamont Gang!
Teddy, i see you working down the comments – i have to stay up til you give me a hug – then i’m off to slumberland….
TeddySanFran @ 71
Oh, that is awesome! And fitting. I’m just down the road a piece from Goose Creek.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 63
Working on it and I hope to get in some cross country skiing and snowshoeing this winter (if we actually get some decent snow at the lower elevations for a change). It is about a 7-8 mile hike in to those lakes and about 3,000-4,000 feet up. The heart is actually in really good shape with no blockage (had one of those scanning ekg’s last year), but trying that hike when you are not in shape could be dangerous anyway.
i need a hug! and i have to get ready for bed in like three minutes!
TeddySanFran @ 71
May I propose Up A Shit Creek Firepups with the NoVA/DC firepups going of ensuring the current administration ends up there.
No politics today. just funny pix. http://frecklescassie.wordpress.com/
Ding! Suz, I think you came up with a winnah!

i have a young friend who is a fellow astrology fiend, her goal is to be the first human to have a Pluto return (approx 250 yrs for Pluto to circle the sun & return to its natal placement in your chart). i think i’ll pass on that goal unless i get a guarantee that my body will revert to its 28-yr-old prime and stay that way for decades.
All kidding aside for a moment, my goals are to complete my 3 books and have them translated into 100 languages
so more people will understand that peace and prosperity go hand in hand !

TeddySanFran @ 81

Suzanne @ 70
Um … I’m not the competitive type, but I wager that my hugs are better than Teddy’s
and we’ll settle this in a Firepup Hug-a-thon, whaddya say TSF ? *g*
Night Kathryn.
Petrocelli @ 59
Me, too. It came out in 1961. I was 11. I prolly read it when I was 13 or 14.
Hi, pups! Doing my usual peek-in to FDL Late Night before hitting the sack. Great pix; is there somewhere that id’s the party-goers? I recognized Token, even tho’ I couldnt really read his name tag. *g* He really is pretty cute, Suzanne.
Well, I’m off to bed, taking with me my newest book (non-politics, at least Bush-related, for a change), “Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History,” by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich.
Hi Cassie – shouldn’t you be in bed by now, too? (sorry, backing off from sounding like a parent).
G’nite.
Aloha, Kathryn and Cassie!
***poking head around the corner*** I’ll be happy to judge that contest! ***pads off smiling at thought***
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 90
Usually I wash it durring the day when she’s out chasing squirrels in the yard. But I don’t want to smell stinky dog blanket for 300 miles tomorrow, so she’ll just have to hold out a bit longer. She saw the suitcases so she knows something’s up…a trip to granny’s!
DrDick @ 76
sounds like a wonderful hiking goal. Used to love to x-country ski but now i avoid cold.
tejanarusa @ 96
click on the options in the slideshow and enable captions.. teddy id’s all the participants in the captions
My goals:
1. Re-learn to speak and understand French
2. Get another Atrios link (hello???)
3. Tell Barbara Bush that her terrible child-rearing is a felony on the world.
SnarKassandra @ 77
Big hug, Cassie, and sweet dreams — keep up those 90’s!
SnarKassandra @ 91

FunnyDiva
Suzanne @ 105
Atrios for substance, Wolcott for the snark.
Suzanne, what a beautiful place you have! Lucky egregious caught that tree before it fell over. Token is a doll, as you have said. What a group! I figured out who everyone is except the gal with the short blond hair and the scarf.
I thought Scarlot was a woman all this time!
Bear Creek, Goose Creek, hmmm. What can we socal folks be called?
Suzanne @ 105
I dislike the pop-up-in-front ads of Vanity Fair, and they happen coming and going. I like the Atrios links because Miss Jane Hamsher values them so highly, and she pays the bills.
SnarKassandra @ 77
Hugs, Cassie!

Alright, I’ll bite. Why did you bury a statue of St Joseph (and which St Joseph?)
LoudounLib @ 113
Now, now, we wouldn’t want Suzanne to have to get out the cuffs to restore order would we? ;0)
Nice Dendrobium Suzanne. I kill most of mine – I don’t neglect them enough.
Okay, ladies, take a number and act civil, please, for (( hugs )).
Hiya, FDiva!
LooHoo, well, how about the name of a waterway down in so cal? something between la and sd?
all right – did you use real names or screen names?
Have the WA state pups named the group yet?
Guess the Seattle area group could be Sound Minds of FDL, or is that too lame?

It’s supposed to cause a seller to get a buyer for real estate. I had thought it was a local thing, but evidently there’s a saint for everything!

“I’m pretty sure most people would trade the ‘psychodramas of the 1990s’ over the present situation.”
Suzanne @ 119
somehow the “San Gabriel River Firepups” doesn’t seem quite right – ’specially since its just a big concrete ditch the last 20 miles to the ocean…
madmommy @116 — lol!
Suzanne @ 32
Whew. For a moment there I thought the little dood your were burying was Token.
gnome, twas a gift from newspaperbrat. i’ve got my fingers and toes crossed i don’t kill it. you should see her garden. ohmystars, that woman has green thumbs.
oc, we used a mix of both.
madmommy @ 122
I think it was a NOLA or Catlic thing but word got out.
LoudounLib @ 125
Hey LL, how’s things?
LoudounLib @ 113
Ow! LL! I’ve got sharp elbows, too ya know! (one of the few parts of me that isn’t amply upholstered).
I was thinking we should have a whole panel of judges for this contest. And more competitors. Should we think about corporate sponsorship? And any winner who DOESN’T hold up an “I did not vote for Bush” sign has to write a confession and sing the Calvin and Hobbs “Very Sorry Song” in front of everyone.
FunnyDiva
The Sound is a name of a waterway up in seattle, correct, funnyd?
madmommy @ 116
She tried that on Saturday but we all ran away.
I’m preparing for my first stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail this coming summer. I’ll be out there for 3-4 weeks in Oregon this time around. There’s no way that I can do a hike-through, but the plan is to have finished the whole length by my 40th birthday.
I am recently retired sold most everything and would like to find my way around the world like I have finally found my way around San Francisco. So far I am in Vietnam traveling to Cambodia. A big goal I know especially after surviving a case of culture shock here, but hay I have time.
madmommy, all is well here. Finished up work this evening and now I’m off for a week, and really looking forward to Thanksgiving at my sis’s house in Richmond with all of the family :-)
I understand you’re taking off tomorrow for your mom’s? Hope you all have a nice time and a great holiday!
madmommy @ 122
Not local–the real estate section had an article on it today, so it only took me a minute or two to figure out which “little guy” Suzanne was telling TSF she’d buried today.
Hi, TSF!

Suzanne @ 119
How about Surf City Firepups?
Suz, I’m sure Scarlet P made good use of the sign after he departed…
Frances Burke @ 134

Not lame, but sounds kinda serious, no?

But he looked so healthy on Saturday.
LoudounLib @ 135
Yep, me, the hubby, kiddos, luggage, toys and dog in a Vue. Family togetherness, let me show you it!
Just thought of another goal — doing whatever I can, no matter how insignificant, to wave goodbye to Frank Wolf next time around and turn VA-10 blue!
Loo Hoo. @ 137
Surf City is Santa Cruz – no matter what that silly town down south tries to claim.
tsf reminds me, i also want to relearn French.
Hmm. And master Flash and Dreamweaver. After the ground freezes tho cuz a short term goal is to dig up 67 to 132 sq. ft of sod in the next few days. The links are to the type of things i want to plant next spring.
::sniff:: I feel bad, ’cause I missed the Seattle thing. Kids got to come first, though. :(
Can you say CHEESY? I thought you could.. Get ready to see Cheese Whiz in human form with Mike Huckabee and Chuck Norris.

Laura Doty @ 141
he is such a nice guy – i read his blog again last night after he left and it took on a whole new meaning. he is such a low key guy.
Loo Hoo. @ 110
So did I. Appears I was wrong.
Frances Burke @ 134
Heh, that is a culture-shock… Congrats, but, be careful too! 8-)
Suzanne @ 131
Yes, you could say that about Puget Sound. It’s the big “bite” out of the upper left-hand corner of the state. Realistically, alot of Western WA pups could be Sound Minds of FDL.
I didn’t mean it to be serious, just wanted to have some “pun” with the name. Waterway and good minds and stuff. ‘Course I’m the one who called the ‘81 Park Avenue Ogden because his grille made him look like a walrus….And the ‘85 XJ6 was called Boothroyd.
FunnyDiva
i forget who asked about the tall blonde with the scarf in the pics. that is npb’s friend sahra, the non blogger and photographer for our little event. eg included a link to her web site on last night’s late late nite thread along with the freeway bloggers site.

2. Get physical therapy on my knee so that I can walk again without limping.
3. Be a better member of Planned Parenthood to promote reproductive freedom for Ohio women.
Loo Hoo. @ 161
Thanks. One day, I hope to be doing what Francis Burke is doing! I spent far too long living far inside my comfort zone and it’s time to move.
A few weeks a year for seven years gives me plenty of time to get comfortable with it, right? :p

last thursday in the Federal District Court ,Dayton,Judge Thomas Rose(by any other name),cited University of Iowa research showing that 40% of creditors foreclosing on borrowers failed to show proof of ownership.the judge ruled that citigroup and hsbc among others were given 30 days to get proof that they actually owned the 26 properties being filed for foreclosure.
Cleveland federal judge Christopher Boyco last month dismissed 14 foreclosure applications brought by deutche bank national trust.they couldn’t prove who owned the mortgage.
the slicing and dicing to sell on has left the question of who owns the mortgage more and more problematic and it’s biting the industry in the arse.
looks like borrowers have been given a way to strike a deal that lets them keep their homes.
Washington lobbyists may already have a brief fron the mortgage industry about the need to update legislation like the Trust Indenture Act.
this info is from an article on page 31 of todays Australian newspaper.

It’s probably better that you don’t. I do, and those are brain cells I can’t spare, that could be put to better use elsewhere.
Suz: did you catch that the play opened on our birthday?!
I loved that book as a kid, it’s not what you’d call a great read, much less historically sound–but wonderful for a young ‘un longing for heroic deeds…and the little dash of poetry about the elusive pimpernel has been stuck in my head since age 11….I love Scarlet P’s nom de guerre.

I hope everyone has a delightful Thanksgiving holiday, with all your favorite foods and favorite people. As bleak as things seem sometimes, there are still many things to be thankful for, and always hope for the future.
Goodnight all!!

Well I used a different swear word, but that was my reaction as well. Who needs to measure how much currency is out there? Print all you like.
The resulting hyperinflation will reduce the debt alright, but it will impoverish the middle class. You can make it work for you only if you have income that keeps up with inflation and total job security. Otherwise, paying down debt and owning things instead of paper makes sense.

Keep up those grades, nail the SAT, and nail a couple of AP tests and the small liberal arts colleges in the Northeast will be falling all over themselves to get you. You are diversity — both geographic and ethnic — and schools like the Ivies, Amherst, Williams, Middlebury, and Bowdoin really want that in their student bodies.
Dream BIG! Harvard, then UT law school, then work in DC or as an AUSA for a few years, and you’ll be ready to run for Congress at age 28. We’ll keep Blue America up and running long enough to raise $ for your first campaign.

There something great to be said for the Seven Sisters as well, at least those which are still all-women (Mt. Holyoke, Smith, Wellesley, are there others who’ve not gone co-ed?).

Ahmadinejad Calls Dollar A “Worthless Piece Of Paper”
from Huff Po by The Huffington Post News Editors
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Sunday that OPEC’s members have expressed interest in converting their cash reserves into a currency other than the depreciating U.S. dollar, which he called a “worthless piece of paper.”
His comments at the end of a rare summit of OPEC heads of state exposed fissures within the 13-member cartel — especially after U.S. ally Saudi Arabia was reluctant to mention concerns about the falling dollar in the summit’s final declaration.

US Reports Drop In Iraq Attacks…
from Huff Po by The Huffington Post News Editors
U.S. officials on Sunday declared a 55 percent drop in attacks since the launch of an offensive nine months ago, while bombs across Iraq killed at least 20 people, highlighting the country’s continuing security threats.
The deaths included three children who were playing soccer when a roadside bomb exploded at a playground near Baqubah, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad.

Daughter eschewed mayonnaise for Colorado College. She loved every minute of it.
There is a river in Borneo called the Kinabatangan that stretches from a mangrove delta up into the mountains. It’s surrounded by Palm Oil Plantations for most of the river, but because of seasonal flooding the planters have left about 1-3 km along the river to remain forested. Wild Bornean dwarf elephants, orangutans, gibbons, proboscis monkeys, macaques, langurs, deer, bearded pigs, crocodiles, and other wildlife inhabit the forest. The river and surrounding ox-bow lakes serve as a stop-over for migratory birds.
My dream is to take an abandoned set of buildings in this forest owned by the Sabah Forestry Service and make it into a research/teaching center for local and international students and faculty. The center would serve as a place to give employment and eco-tourism opportunities for the Orang Sungai people so that they could counter the pressures to sell their lands or abandon their traditional villages for urban life.
And hopefully those who use the center would participate in projects to reclaim the palm-oil plantations abandoned due to the massive floods of the last few years, replanting them to create a “Corridor of Life” allowing wildlife to avoid the inbreeding and population pressures of attempting to survive in fragmented sections of the rainforest.
TexBetsy @ 289
The advantage of the small, elite liberal arts schools (this is also true of Harvard) is that they generally have lots of money for things like that (lots of successful and wealthy alumni). More importantly, they are eager to spend it to bring in diversity (racial/ethnic, geographic, and economic). If Cassie can keep up her current level of accomplishment and do well on the SAT and ACT, she really should be able to get a substantial scholarship, if not a full ride.

That’s my BIG dream. I’m working with the local university in Sabah, Borneo and some NGO’s to take over the buildings.
And I should say that the forest (which is secondary forest- it was once selectively cut before WW2) stretches some 500 km along the river. It’s not just a 1-3 km “patch”; That’s the distance of most of the forested zone that stretches away from the river. The problem is the fragmentation. The elephants have to cross through the plantations, the orangutans and monkeys can’t move from one tract to another, etc.
My “project” with the Center would be only a small part of the mosaic…the Worldwide Fund for Nature and other groups are involved with reforestation, for example. It’ll likely be about 5-10 years before the Center is up and running…and that’s even if we can snag it from the Dept. of Forestry through a sort of “eminent domain” action (that’s where the University of Sabah is working hard).
I’m just the one who’ll be trying to set up the opportunities for foreign students and professors to do a semester study-research program there. There are similar places in Central America (Panama, Costa Rica, Belize, and even Nicaragua) but this would be the first of it’s kind in Asia, I believe.

DrDick @ 348
Make sure that she provides a link to her best writing on the blog. But one that isn’t too filled with net-lingo. You’ve shared several with us and I’ve been impressed.
Also tailoring each application to what the school has to offer in terms of her interests is really useful. Showing that the prospective student knows something about the University environment, the Department offerings, faculty, and how all of that will be important to her reaching her dreams is quite useful. A lot of students send out boiler-room presentations that are so generalized that the Admissions board thinks “The gals great, but she’s gonna get in somewhere else…and not getting into our school isn’t gonna disappoint her.”
Make the application essay personalized to the school and they’ll think…”she’s got to get in here”!
cinnamonape @ 372
great advice. thanks.
TexBetsy @ 370
Betsy, for us brown people (Indians) the kids start planning from Grade 9.
Suzanne @ 366
That was me Suzanne. I suggested the Wahoo Yahoos. I did consider the Yahoo (organisation) link but dammit, yahoo (non-capital) is a great word and I hate to see great words stolen.
Arrgh. Did I say “boiler-room”?…I meant “boiler-plate” essay. In other words, try to have her write individualized essays. She can include all her personal skills in each one…but she should take notes about each school after looking through their catalogs. She should write down the things that she likes about it, maybe do a quick look at the web sites for the Departments/Programs/Professors she’s interested in, and then sit down for an hour and dream about what she could do with her education at that school.
Every school will open up a different pathway of possibilities.
