Three days ago Gretchen Clearwater announced that she is running for Congress in Indiana’s 9th CD for a seat currently held by Bush Dog Dem Baron Hill. Readers of this blog are aware of Hill’s steadfast support for the Bush-Cheney agenda — in Iraq and here at home. He was the first of the reactionary Dems to fold after being targeted by Blue America with robo-calls and the threat of a newspaper ad regarding his support for Bush’s S-CHIP veto. But Gretchen is hardly new to this. She ran against Hill, a Rahm Emanuel fave, in 2006 as well. In 2006 I looked at both candidates and Gretchen was clearly the more suitable.
But with huge Insider support Hill won — handily — and Gretchen went back to work at the University of Indiana and, of course, at grassroots activism in the 9th CD. Hill, on the other hand, promptly joined the Blue Dog coalition and has been voting against progressive values and principles ever since. If Gretchen replaces him, that isn’t a caucus she would consider joining.
“I hope to work with people like John Conyers, Russ Feingold, Dennis Kucinich, Barbara Lee. The Progressive Caucus needs some more people on their side.”
The differences between Gretchen and Hill are crystal clear — far more now than they were last year — when Democrats couldn’t see beyond just getting rid of right wing fanatic Mike Sodrel. “Times have changed,” Gretchen told me on the phone a few days ago. People who didn’t support her last year have been urging her to take Hill on again.
People are frustrated with Congress and Baron Hill has voted the wrong way on a number of occasions. S-CHIP is one example but labor folks are pretty angry about his votes on ‘free’ trade and see those votes as a threat to their jobs. And when you’re talking about people losing their jobs, you’re talking about people losing their homes. Indiana has one of the highest rates of home foreclosures. And Baron voted for the bankruptcy bill that has exacerbated the problem… Last time all the district Democratic chairs unanimously — except for Monroe County, where I’m from — endorsed Baron Hill during the primary. Now the chairman from Monroe County is lobbying the rest of the county chairs to not endorse during the primary.
I think I have more courage than Baron Hill. I’m willing to look at a bill and vote against it if I think it’s going to be bad for this district or for the country. And he tends to not lead; when you elect someone to Congress they ought to be leaders. He follows and does what people tell him to do. Someone in the Indiana legislature told me recently that they see me as a dangerous candidate because I’m not going to vote down-the-line the way a Rahm Emanuel might tell me to vote.
Rarely do Democratic candidates feel comfortable talking about the dark force behind the DCCC. I asked her how she felt about Emanuel’s dire warnings to Democratic candidates to “move right” on immigration.
“I think that’s a crazy idea,” she said. The issue is far too complicated for someone to be able to say ‘move right’ or ‘move left’ on it. There are several issues that need to be looked at and given serious consideration from labor laws to ‘free’ trade agreements. We’re dealing with human beings. Here in the 9th district of Indiana many people have lost jobs because of industry moving to Mexico or China and they don’t blame Mexican immigrants for this. The fault lies with industry moving out. They know who to blame. The immigration issue is a hyped up issue. Most Americans are decent people who can look at all sides of that issue. The xenophobia from the loud minority is something that scares me.”
Thursday night Gretchen was at a fundraising dinner for Jill Long Thompson, a progressive Democrat who is running for against extremist incumbent Mitch Daniels, a former Bush Regime operative. Gretchen got a very encouraging reception.
“At the fund raiser many people approached me indicating that they would be backing me this time. They gave me their names and volunteered to help with my campaign. I spoke to Indiana Progressives chair Eldon Robison at length. He talked about the outrageous capitulations that Hill has made in Congress and he indicated that I was the better candidate hands down and that he would be in touch with me often throughout the campaign. Last time they were reluctant to do so. They barely spoke to me and in fact wound up supporting Hill.”
Emanuel, of course, is still there for Hill, and if things get hairy I’m sure Hoyer and Pelosi will be shuttling down to IN-09 for fundraisers, just like they did for Al Wynn, but across the district Democrats are waking up and realizing Baron Hill isn’t one of them. And those who haven’t woken up yet… well Gretchen has some plans for a grassroots campaign that will help to wake them too. Here are a few paragraphs from her announcement speech this week that address the nay-sayers who think its impossible to defeat an incumbent:
To those who say I am not viable, I believe my views are more in the mainstream of the Democratic Party than those of my opponent. Unlike my opponent, I would have voted for S-CHIP every time. I would have supported higher fuel efficiency standards for cars. I would not have given financial institutions any help in bankruptcy proceedings when those same institutions continue to gouge us with their outrageous fees and interest rates. I would not have voted to authorize the war in Iraq and you can count on me to oppose a war with Iran. I would not have voted to give the executive branch more power to violate your rights through warrant-less wire-tapping. Who is more viable?
To those who say I am inexperienced, I believe I have already shown far greater wisdom and more common sense than the experienced politicians, who foolishly trusted and continue to trust President Bush.
To those who fear that I will hurt the Democratic Party’s chances of winning in the November general election, I say — the failure of the Democratic leadership in Congress to confront President Bush has done far more damage to the party’s reputation and chances of winning than anything my presence on the ballot could ever do.
And if that doesn’t sound convincing to you, ask Gretchen how she feels about impeachment. She brought it up to me and then said Bush and Cheney both belong behind bars. Gretchen will be the last Blue America candidate added to our list until 2008. More than most candidates she needs some grassroots support and I won’t be asking you to dig deep for a couple months, so… Blue America is open and I’m hoping you’ll join me in giving Gretchen Clearwater a hand.

About Firedoglake
Howie!
Hi Ann. And welcome to FDL, Gretchen. You haven’t said a word yet and your Blue America page is already filling up with money. I can’t wait for the folks in our community to start hearing why you’re running for Congress. Let’s start with an easy one. Do you think Bush and Cheney have done things that merit immediate impeachment investigations?
Yes, I do believe that the actions of Bush and Cheney merit immediate impeachment investigations. We can start with the way the Iraq war was started, i.e. violating international law. And of course, they have violated international laws against torture. And that’s just on the international level. Let’s talk about our loss of civil liberties via unlawful wire tapping and loss of habeus corpus. The list is long.
Hey Howie! Welcome to FDL Ms Clearwater!
It’s a pleasure to be here. Thank you, Howie, for the invitation.
Thanks for restoring power to the people through this medium! There is hope after all!
Gretchen, what about Baron Hill. Why do people in IN-09 put up with someone who is so supportive of the Bush agenda? Are Bush’s and Hill’s policies popular in southern Indiana?
Gretchen,
I saw in the Louisville courier Journal that Baron Hill tried to justify his votes against S-CHIP because of the proposed cigarette tax; that he felt it would cause more money to go out of the district than to come in.
Given the disparities of moneys going out of states like in the Blue Northeast/New England and the rewards given to the Red states in the South and Southwest that far outstretch the taxes they pay, how could he justify his ludicrous stance and think he wouldn’t be called on it?
Welcome Gretchen, I wish you the best in beating Baron Hill, who is no better than Mike Sodrel, the Rethug he beat in 06.
Since it is a fairly conservative district, what are the citizens there saying about issues important to them?
In my previous run for congress, I found widespread support for progressive issues all throughout the district. But we simply couldn’t knock on enough doors to let people know there was an alternative to the status quo. Not only that, the Indiana Democratic Party’s state website refused to even acknowledge my candidacy. As such, Hill appeared to be the only option available. This time, we’re going to build on our previous support and with the help of organizations such as yours, we can get the word out to district 9 voters–there is an option!
I was born & raised in Indiana. Left there as soon as I could (almost 20 years ago now!?) I’ve always maintained that Indiana is the most Southern in nature of the Northern States. Even my “Liberal” friends there have a unsettling Conservativeness shading their political outlook. Needless to say, I wish Gretchen success and am off to contibute at Blue American right now!
Indiana University, please, Howie, not University of Indiana, unless you’re talking about the University of Southern Indiana, which is a different thing entirely.
Buffalo, I live here and I completely agree. A great local political columnist named Harrison Ullman used to refer to the legislature as the Republicrats. He was absolutely right.
To the question by dakine01 about SCHIP:
Farmers in Harrison county were not consulted about their views on a cigarette tax to pay for SCHIP. I spoke to one such man today who was quite angry about the assumption made by those in power that SCHIP would negatively impact farmers. The fact is, farmers have kids too, and many small farmers throughout the district are struggling to pay their medical bills.
Gretchen Clearwater @ 3
I would start Impeachment proceedings on something that is a slam dunk to prove like sidestepping all the laws and going directly to warrantless wiretapping of American citizens on American soil. I would call it what it is: Abuse of Power, an impeachable offense, and charge the President, since it was done under his approval and the buck stops with him. And/or you could charge Contempt of Congress for the unanswered subpoenas and the missing e-mails and any of the other ways that this Administration has shown Contempt for Congress.
Then again, this administration is responsible for the greatest Obstruction of Justice I can think of in History, systematic politization of the DOJ, in all its various nuances, from hiring personnel who were loyal Bushies, to firing AUSAs because they weren’t willing to prosecute Democrats just prior to an election or because they did prosecute a Republican incumbent, ever. So many grounds; so little time.
To brownbuffalo: Don’t despair! You’ll be happy to learn that the Floyd county Democrats, in the southernmost part of the 9th district, invited none other than Russ Feingold to be their keynote speaker at their primary fundraising dinner for the year. Sadly, he couldn’t make it. I spoke to the Floyd county leadership and they are feeling somewhat left out by the Democratic party. And they worry that the progressive inroads they’ve made will be for naught.
The Clear Skies Act of 2003 actually allowed more pollution and former EPA Admin Christine Todd Whitman admitted that under oath this year. Would you revist that law?
brownbuffalo @ 10
It depends on what part of Indiana. I was born and raised there, too. Spent my first 40 years in northern Indiana, mostly Lake County, sometimes in Porter County. Most of the area is Democratic and the economy of the entire area is based on steel mills with many union workers populating the cities, towns, and counties.
Gretchen Clearwater @ 13
I always do a bit of a double-take when I see “farmers in Harrison County” as I grew up in Harrison County, Kentucky. And there’s a town in Indiana named for my hometown of Cynthiana as well. :})
Gretchen: Love the briefcase!
Twisted Martini @ 12
Buffalo, I live here and I completely agree. A great local political columnist named Harrison Ullman used to refer to the legislature as the Republicrats. He was absolutely right.
I thought the late, great Mr. Ullman’s favorite term was “America’s Worst Legislature”.
Anyway, welcome, Gretchen, from a fellow Hoosier and IU alum.
Go get him! Ever thought about moving up to Indy? Looks like Julia Carson’s probably finished.
Regarding the impeachment issue: I applaud Dennis Kucinich’s efforts to fight for our constitution. If I were in congress today, I would be the 23rd co-sponsor of his bill to impeach Cheney. Now is the time to re-establish the rule of law. And you are quite correct; we can’t let them get away with these abuses of power.
Sandman @ 16
Yes, I would revisit this law so that it actually lives up to its name!
Is there anyway to connect your opponent to the 363 tons of cash that was shipped to Iraq. (Real Cash on pallets, the largest shipment ever) Just because the Iraqi Finance Minister needed it to pay Iraqi pensions. A picture of that cash being loaded could sink you opponent like an anchor. The US(Bush) did not ask to be paid back.
welcome to FDL Gretchen. I don’t have any deep questions for you, but just want to add my welcome and hopes for your success.
My family has deep roots in the area you will represent, going back more than 200 years. I love the river and the good people who live along its banks. I haven’t been back there since ‘03, but it gave me great sorrow to see how many jobs and industries had left the area, and how rundown places like Jeff look to a casual visitor. Most of my relatives and friends in the area were pretty gloomy about the future for themselves and their kids.
Indiana and our nation deserve and require better representatives that Baron HIll. I’ve sent you a small donation, and signed up for a monthly contribution. Do you know Barry Welsh and his wonderful wife Sherri? They are working to get him elected from the district that currently has (shudder) Mike Pence as the representative. You could do a lot worse than join with them to bring more progressive representation to southern Indiana.
Good luck, and my best wishes for your success.
Welcome, Gretchen! So good to have you here.
Sandman @ 23
I believe all of those actions occurred under Mr Hill’s predecessor, Mr Sodrel.
Hi Gretchen. I contributed what I could for now and hope to follow up again in the not too distant future. I graduated from the IU School of Law and have several friends still living and working in IN. While some of them are archly conservative, I will try to get the best of the rest to support you too!
While it isn’t exactly clear how the Floyd County Democrat’s fear of their good work being all for naught is supposed to alleviate my despair, I will attempt to be heartened all the same.
Gretchen Clearwater @ 21
Impeach Bush!? Where is my fainting couch!?
Thanks, Gretchen. I am happy to contribute to your campaign.
Thank you, Gretchen, for standing up to Baron Hill and bring attention to progressive values in your district.
Sandman @ 23
My opponent’s voting record speaks for itself on this issue.
Well, then hang S-Chip around him like a boat anchor. What does he expect them to do get a paper route to pay for their health insurance?
Hi, Gretchen! Another ex-Hoosier and IU grad here! Is Monroe Co. part of your district? How are IU students behaving these days in getting involved in politics?
(disclosure: I started college in 1967, so my benchmark for student political activity may be skewed). Can you harness some for block-walking?
let’s make a point, there are republicans that promise their constituents true Conservative law and then instead deliver neo con extremest law
and there are politicians that run as democrats and they think they can then join the neo con team
however democrats don’t roll over, if we put someone in office that deceived us we’re gonna do our best to get them unelected and a true progressive to take that spot
let’s hope we can deliver this seat to Gretchen, we need real progressives in office if we are to return our country to the place it was before this administration destroyed it
good luck ms Clearwater, the very best of luck
Gretchen, I love your positive attitude and clear eyed view of what needs to be done. My contribution’s been made.
Ruby Tuesday @ 24
Hi Ruby. Thanks for your kind words. Yes, I do know Barry Welsh and think he’s a fantastic candidate with great courage.
Your description of the good people living along the river touched my heart. The 9th is truly one of the most beautiful places in Indiana–especially those historic river towns. You’re quite correct; they are suffering economically. Many factories (such as Colgate) have closed an people are hurting financially. So many of our current leaders are really out of touch on this issue.
Someone mentioned the job losses in your district, can you get an Enterprize Zone for your district to bring in new jobs?
tejanarusa @ 32
I live in Bloomington and part of Monroe county is in my district. IU students vary in their activism, but this past January, I attended a Washington DC rally to end the occupation in Iraq. And the majority of the people on the bus were IU students.
Sandman @ 36
There’s a conference sponsored by the Rainbow Coalition coming up that I’d like to attend to learn more about creating Enterprise Zones.
jayt @ 20
I thought the late, great Mr. Ullman’s favorite term was “America’s Worst Legislature”.
Anyway, welcome, Gretchen, from a fellow Hoosier and IU alum.
Go get him! Ever thought about moving up to Indy? Looks like Julia Carson’s probably finished.
Oh, no – can’t be – I’m from New York State and I really do think ours is worse.
Toby Wollin @ 39
As someone who has lived and worked in almost half of the states, I can safely say that each and every state legislature has its own areas of odiousness that the state must try to live down.
Toby Wollin @ 39
TW, from a fellow NYer, I do believe that our legi is the best known for being the worst.
Welcome Ms. Clearwater, and the best of luck. We need many more like you in Congress.
What are your plans if DCCC gangs up on you?
Sandman @ 31
Actually, Sandman, that just about describes the situation. Years ago after my divorce, I needed to work two jobs to pay my rent and buy food. One of my jobs was a paper route. I understand completely the economic hardships my fellow Hoosiers are experiencing. It’s time that we genuinely look into real solutions to our health care crises. We need Universal health care. We have to make this issue a priority.
Gretchen, I wish I still lived in the district so I could drive around with you again and knock on some more doors, but alas…. I’ll just have to send you $$ and good wishes instead. And thanks to Howie and Jane and all for helping one of the worthiest candidates in America! Folks, I know Gretchen very very well and can tell you that if we had a Congress full of people like her, America would be a much better place.
Welcome Gretchen, and as a NWI hoosier, I am so excited to hear about progressive dems taking on the blue dogs here in Indiana. I am also thrilled that there is progressive dem taking on Daniels.
I will certainly contribute to your campaign. Have you been considered by Feingold to be a candidate with the Progressive Patriots?
eCAHNomics @ 41
Radio ads are inexpensive and rather effective, as I learned during my last campaign. I’ll be using more of them this time around and putting them out earlier to pre-empt some of the resistance I anticipate from the DCCC.
Thank you for answering my questions and I wish you every success, when is the primary?
If you wanted to you could add a pledge to ask for the 363 tons of cash to be repaid to the US in yearly installments over 10 years, that would be fair (no interest) and they have oil everywhere, to generate the money.
About $1600 raised on ActBlue today– anyone who’s lurking and who hasn’t donated yet, let’s see if we can make it an even 2000! Or maybe 2008!
weeder @ 44
Yes, I’m thrilled about Jill Long Thompson’s candidacy against Daniels. I attended a fundraiser for her recently. Daniels has been a disaster for Indiana.
And I’ll be contacting Russ Feingold now that I’ve announced to seek his groups’s endorsement. He’s one of my heros.
Sounds good. In NYC, we have 2 great local hosts on one of our NPR stations who do in-depth interviews. If you have anything like that where you are, make sure you get boked as a guest, as many times as you can. For example, every time Hill says something about you, try to get another booking to rebut it. Also, what about the cable-TV channel devoted to local events. Speak to town govt bodies & get it broadcast on cable. And does IU have a radio or TV station? If s, get on it. All of these little measures should get your name in circulation. Congressional districts aren’t that big.
Gary Trauner ran for the at-large seat in WY against te R incumbent in 06. That covers the entire state, and he literally knocked on doors, since there are no good targeted media. Drove tens of thousands of miles. Didn’t wi, but came close & is making another run this year.
I envy that kind of retail politiking. In my NYC district we have a member who’s set for life and therefore hardly ever even holds meetings for constituents.
God, I just hate it when a genuine progressive pops up and forces me to qualify my contempt for the Democratic party.
All power to you, Gretchen!
Gretchen – Best of luck! I’ll drop by Blue America w/ a small donation after work. You sound great! Sorry I’m a bit far away to help w/ the block-walking or phone banking. We need people like you in Congress.
Eric Foster @ 47
Thanks, Eric! A superb idea.
You convinced me.
Thanks for stopping by FDL, Gretchen. I tossed a bit of progressive love in the Blue America basket for you and hope for more visits as the campaign continues.
Quick question.. On the occasions you look ahead of Nov ‘08, which committee assignments are you hoping for as Congressman Clearwater?
eCAHNomics @ 49
We are fortunate to have WFHB, publicly funded radio station in Bloomington that offers many alternatives to corporate media. For example, a group of us convinced them to air Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now program. They tend to be quite responsive to the community.
Gretchen – radio ads, spot ads on selected cable are cheaper than on the air, and you can pinpoint better target demos than using broadcast ads. Also consider some ads on Indiana blogs, news sites and the like, very cheap, the $ goes further and keeps more of the money circulating locally a bit longer.
I cannot tell you how it cheers my heart to have a candidate like yourself and Jill Long Thompson running. I just suggested you as a candidate at the Progressive Patriots site.
Have you looked into how Medicare Part D affected seniors who were previously covered by Hoosier Rx? I remember my husband’s aunt having to pay more for her medications (that she could ill afford) once Medicare Part D was put into place.
That’s really good news.
I wonder of it’s too late to do anything about global warming?
Eureka Springs @ 53
Of course, I would be a freshmen congressperson, but my first choice committee preferences would be the Committees on Foreign Affairs, Energy and Commerce, and Transportation and Infrastructure. I choose these because, with respect to foreign affairs, U.S. foreign policy impacts what we can accomplish in the 9th district. If we’re funding unjustified wars, we have no money left for crucial issues such as health care and education. RE: Energy and Commerce. We need smart leadership and appropriate technologies to deal with complex issues such as global warming. And regarding Transportation and Infrstructure, instead of building unnecessary tollroads and new terrain highways, we need to transition to better ways of moving about by using high-speed rail, for example.
Gretchen has a cool website, too, for anyone who wants to find out more or keep up with what’s going on:
http://www.clearwaterforcongress.com
Gretchen, I’m curious as to why you think Mitch Daniels has been a disaster for Indiana, what Jill Thompson can do to change the perception he has been effective.
weeder @ 56
My 84 year old neighbor found Medicare Part D cumbersome and confusing. She’s lucky because her health is good and her medical expenses relatively low. Another 74 year old friend of mine, however, is clearly not helped by Part D–she still must work to pay for her medications. We need to revisit Medicare Part D.
Some of my friends call me old fashioned (conservative). Some call me a radical progressive, socialist, Marxist or liberal. But can someone explain to me why we need “pacs”?
Twisted Martini @ 61
IIRC, isn’t one of the issues how he rammed Daylight Savings through the Indiana Lege?
Sorry, congressperson.. I never know quite what to say when addressing that particular aspect of the title. After all it’s the progressive part that’s key to me, more women in congress is just an additional bonus.
Anyway, great committee choices for great reasons, and a hip hip hooray to more high-speed rail!
Oklahoma kiddo @ 58
We have no choice–we must act to undo the damage. It’s not too late. Inaction will only exacerbate the problem.
Twisted Martini @ 61
I lived in Indiana for a while and Mitch Daniels asked all board members to resign, Water Boards, Gaming Boards like that. It was a power grab almost unheard of. Saying institutional knowledge is overrated. Anyone who saw Micheal Brown in action at FEMA knows that institutional knowledge is never overrated.
dakine01 @ 63
Ms. Clearwater,
The fact that you’re brave enough to take on people like Baron von Hill, and get substantial support from places such as Blue America just warms my heart. After years of struggle against my own Party, and worrying that it might be too late to stop the Conglomerate takeover of America, we’re fighting back…big time!
It’s like watching a dream of mine for many years finally coming true. Whatever happens in your race, know that there are thousands of us around America, and the world for that matter that “got your back.”
Question: With Republicans being so hyper-partisan, yet at the same time constantly calling for “bi-partisanship” from Dems, and a media that constntly let’s them get away with this framing, do you envision being able to find any compromises with them at all, and if so, which issues can you get these partisan hacks to compromise on?
I would like to once again thank Howie for inviting me to this forum. This gives me great hope, as I said previously. I would also like to thank this online community for these great suggestions and questions, and I want to thank you for your activism–I truly believe all of us are making a difference when we work together. Thank you so much.
Wow!!! Go Gretchen!!!
Gretchen Clearwater @ 69
Thank you Gretchen, Howie, and FDL for helping us work together to make things better.
MS Clearwater,
Thank you for taking the time to visit and let us know about yourself.
Book Salon time…
http://www.firedoglake.com/200…../#comments
Hi Gretchen,
As president of Democrats.com, I’m thrilled to hear you call for an impeachment investigation :))
Right now my first question for every Democrat who wants my support is: will you pledge to vote against any additional funds for the occupation of Iraq, except what is absolutely required to bring all our troops home?
I’m no longer satisfied with vague statements from candidates like “let’s bring our troops home.” After 5 years of Iraq lies, words mean nothing – it’s only the money that counts.
anybody still here or is everybody at the book place?
Phoenix Woman @ 19
Gretchen,
A lot of politics is like high school crap. Ditch the briefcase, try to look as much as you comfortably can like someone people will understand and then speak directly instead of in response to others.
Don’t say, “Others may say …, but I say.”
Instead say, “I believe …” or “I will …”
If you’re going to lead, then just lead, don’t respond to opponents.
If you’re going to communicate with people who aren’t already on your page, then don’t challenge them to understand you personally. Listen to what interests them and speak from your heart what you’d like to do about it. They’ll hear your message(s) and vote for you to represent their views and needs in Congress.
In summary, look good, speak clearly and speak affirmatively from the heart to their needs and interests.
People don’t have a lot of time to parse your looks, your words or anything. It has to be simple and direct and honest.
As a former graduate student in the Department of Biology at IU, I would like to say that Gretchen is as hard working, dedicated, knowledgeable, and friendly as anyone in that world-class department. Thank’s for smoothing out the bumps in the road for me, Gretchen, and best of luck!
By the way, It’s Indiana University, not University of Indiana.
I’m thrilled to read this post about Gretchen Clearwater. Baron Hill deserves to be booted out by anyone who calls himself or herself a Democrat. If I have to choose between voting for him or Mike Sodrel next time around, I won’t cast a vote for that office.
