DO NOT WANT.
So, Suzanne, what did you think of Cassie’s comment earlier ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Good
eveningmorning from North Texas. What have I missed?Poor Winston. Apparently if left unbathed for too long, he turns into quite the stinky kitty.
All my cats have been virtually odorless. The top of Gussy’s head smells particularly nice. So, thankfully, I’ve never had to bathe cats very often.
I always thought cats were self-bathing machines.
Hi everyone… I’m back home…
hi katy and airport cat
I saw a sign on a box of kittens for sale a few years ago that said, “SELF CLEANING PETS FREE TO GOOD HOME”.
TRex @ 19
Didja pick any up?
TexBetsy @ 16
They need some help. The shower works pretty well.
Steve-AR @ 21
Hope the shower works better on cats than on teenage boys.
!!!!!! How’s it going CTuttle?!!!!!
I thought the cat was going to bite him!
TexBetsy @ 13
sorry, tex, was on the phone with my baby girl.. which comment?
Loo Hoo. @ 23
… tee hee hee …
Nah, no Siamese.
And besides, the cats-to-people ratio in this house is already 2 to 1. Mustn’t give them too much of an upper hand. You never know when they will revolt.
TexBetsy @ 16
Only if they have not been sprayed by skunks! Both our kitties were sprayed one Sunday morning, and we had to find every tomato product on the shelf. We were COVERED with tomato juice, sauce, ketchup, etc. and it was hilarious. Times 2 kitties.
my fun experience with bathing a cat was when mine went down the chimney of the empty house next door.[years ago]
She went missing, gone for a week, had all the neighborhood kids looking for her and they saw her in the window one day of the foreclosed house.
Had the management company bail my baby out but I think there were at least 5 or 6 baths to remove all the soot on her from her playing Santa Cat.
Loo Hoo. @ 23
Pretty good so far with my Warriors leading, we’ve crossed threads a few times, today… *g*
katymine @ 17
Hi Katymine. Are you feeling well after your traveling? You are amazing!
This may be a bit off topic, but if you had a video of someone waterboarding a dog, especially an obviously domesticated dog, wouldn’t that just end the whole discussion about waterboarding? I think a lot of people in this country relate to dogs (especially theirs) more than people in other countries.
Sounds sick, but I think it is not too far off the mark.
welcome home, katymine
Pete & Sun @ 32
would certainly get the person who did it arrested on animal cruelty charges.
TRex @ 27
Only 2:1? Even when my kids are here, our ratio is higher than that.
TexBetsy @ 10
Seems odd to me, especially coming from Agence France Presse, not local media. Let me do some research and see what I can find.
katymine @ 29
the one time i felt a need to bathe a cat was when mine fell into wet cement. the cat did not know she was going to like dried cement less than the bath. neither of us thought we were going to survive that bath.
hope y’all still have your barf bags handy ….
Alberto Gonzales’ Advice For Mukasey: “Follow The Law. That Was My Lodestar.”
from Huff Po by The Huffington Post News Editors
Yesterday, former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales spoke at the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, giving his views on “immigration, education and public service.” The event drew approximately 1,000 attendees, as well as a few protestors who greeted Gonzales outside the venue.
He dodged questions about waterboarding by local station KIII-TV, but did give some words of advice for his successor, Michael Mukasey:
To do the right thing. And I have every confidence that Mike Mukasey will do the right thing. Always do the right thing. Follow the law. That was always my lodestar, my guiding principle, and I’m sure that will guide General Mukasey.

I cant stop thinking about Judith’s Magic Stapler.
just a quick meow-by, but I must, eef I may, offer a few suggestions.
Primero, eet seems as eef there ees a leetle too much water een the tub, eh?
Also, the bather might try turning down the amount of water pouring from the faucet, some gatos do no like that.
Tercero, the bather might try getting down een the tub weeth the poor unfortunate gato, thees sends the message that the bath ees sometheeng for the two of joo to get through together, rather than sometheeng joo are inflicting like punishment.
Buena sera, I do no claim to be een any wise an expert.
Adios, perritos del fuego.
(Oh, and be nice to each other, I have seen much spontaneous flamewarring thees evening, as eef the primary season has turned la blogosfera eento so much dry tinder.)
so.
excellent news katymine
Awwwwwwwww. Poor baby.
I bet it was good to get her home.
We just finished a special session of our state legislature that sought to replace the corruption-tainted oil extraction fees charged big oil here. The big oil faction was in total disarray, and were handed their biggest defeat in state history by our maverick Republican governor, Sarah Palin. She showed more balls throughout than I’ve seen from most politicians in a long, long time.
TexBetsy @ 38
I was rolling in my seat when I read that earlier…
!El Gato Negro! @ 42
waving special gatonip under el gato’s nose in an attempt to entice him to stay – we are flameless here at the lake (and won’t make you get wet if you dont wanna)
Suzanne @ 34
Yes. But the point hits home. Americans may-at this ugly time in our history-think more of their pets than they do of human beings. Ugly and probably true. Good call, Pete and Sun.
TRex @ 19
I don’t know about Winston but, sometimes older cats get less flexible and aren’t able to clean themselves all over, so they need a bit of help. The only time I ever bathed a cat was Fido the White Cat. He liked to sleep in the ashes of the fire. He also liked to stand at the end of the bath when I showered. One day, both of these events coincided. I had a sooty white kitty and lots of running water, what could I lose? The answer my friends, was blood, a little flesh and, for a short time, the love of my cat. Never again.
TexBetsy @ 22
Old Spice body wash and shampoo are great for stinky teens, all in one bottle.
TRex @ 44
The kicker is that she went down the chimney the very next day after all the water sports…. and looked like I had hiked 5 miles through blackberry brambles….
THEN the management company put a board over the chimney
Loo Hoo. @ 48
the point is valid but the act is criminal – which is the point but i sure would not encourage anyone trying it
¡¡¡El Gato Negro!!!
There weell be no flame-warring at thee Lake tonight.
We haff the best moderators in the beezness.

Why this sudden anti-durian outburst? Did a Durian break your heart? Your sense of smell?

no thanks
Just like the Aussie that was hanged for “pot”. At least the very experienced hangman came out of retirement just for him.
TRex @ 73
this reminds me of lutefisk somehow …
persiflage @ 78
No, they are just one of those things that I find inherently comic. God apparently made the fruit of the Durian SO delicious that he had to hide it in the stinkiest possible thing in the world so that we all wouldn’t give up everything in our lives to sit and eat Durian all the time.
Ah!! lye soaked fish.
TRex @ 66
But, conductor sir, there is no fine for bringing this durian on the train, sir.

newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 81
heh, here’s a quote i lifted from wiki for lutefisk
Quote from Garrison Keillor’s book Lake Wobegon Days:
“Every Advent we entered the purgatory of lutefisk, a repulsive gelatinous fishlike dish that tasted of soap and gave off an odor that would gag a goat. We did this in honor of Norwegian ancestors, much as if survivors of a famine might celebrate their deliverance by feasting on elm bark. I always felt the cold creeps as Advent approached, knowing that this dread delicacy would be put before me and I’d be told, “Just have a little.” Eating a little was like vomiting a little, just as bad as a lot.”
I am so glad Wilson did not extract the revenge I thought he was going to. I can just imagine the guy, wearing bloody shorts, showing up at the er – trying to explain to the doc that he was trying to wash his pussy…cat
katymine @ 40
Excellent news! …….. all but the bill part;-)
Oh that is the fruit that my kids used to beg for when we went to the asian market… they loved these wafer cookies that had that as the cream filling… woohoo did they stink…..
I would buy it and the kids would have to eat it outside….. PU
TRex @ 87
Hmmm, I thought I’ve had every fruit on the planet but this does not seem familiar …
Suzanne @ 77
I was in Singapore maybe 6 years ago and it was terrifyingly clean. 2 years ago, not so much. I actually saw lots of cigarette butts in flower beds, which just wouldn’t have happened a few years before. I think enforcing all those laws (did you know it’s illegal not to flush a public toilet?) costs more than the government can afford.
I’m calling it an early one, tonite! I bid ya’ll a fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!! *g*
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 88

So how do you guys get used to the time change stuff anyway?
Since AZ does not do daylight savings and the only fun is trying to figure out what time it is in the rest of the world half of the year and what time did they change the shows on the TeeVee…. NOW, in two weeks I gained an hour but then lost it last night when I flew home…..
I’m heading to bed especially since Miss Dog is asleep in her own bed …. sneaky of me to wait until she goes to bed first now isn’t it?
Shhhhh don’t wake her up
Durian is a new animal to me, too. The only fruit from an Asian market I can vouch for, firsthand, is the lychee nut.
More like a strawberry or grape than a nut, it’s sweet but mildly citrus and has a semi-gelatinous texture that’s hard to describe but habit-forming.
Loo Hoo. @ 99
I have a friend who was once like you. Then a cat chose him. She ran away from home to hang out with him and clearly adored him. She would go home at night and then show up again the next morning, hanging on the screen door and calling to him to let her in.
When her owners moved, they bequeathed her to him. “She’s clearly much happier with you.”
They’re still living happily ever after. How can you deny a creature who is clearly in love with you?

peanutbutter @ 123
Eccleston was great. I’d only ever seen him in roles where he was sensible, hard-working and kinda normal. His Dr Who was a revelation. I really like how David Tennant plays him – a hypersmart, cheeky, whirlwind but when he slows down, there’s loneliness and sadness so real it hurts.
Smgumby @ 127
Oh that’s harsh…and probably true.
Suzanne @ 89
d’oh! nope, i had the same kinda thoughts, but not as witty as yours. Your comment reminded me of a favorite family story about newdealfarm neighbors. The neighbor liked his whiskey, he & the hired man had a few too many and decided it would be a good idea to castrate the cat. They put on their heavy leather choppers, got the tin-snips … the cat got away intact and unharmed but neighbor and hired man sobered up in a hurry when their choppers were shredded.
‘Course it was the way my dad told it that was so darn funny.

Loo Hoo. @ 171
I’m hopeful! How ya been?
Like most of you, I am too afraid of getting my heart broken once again to get my hopes up. Bush did his part by pushing me towards the Dems all these years, now if the Dems would just do their part and stand up to the chimp!
The only stopping me from registering as a Democrat is the pathetic behavior of the Democrats.
peanutbutter @ 173
I get hopeful. Then I get depressed. Then I get hopeful. And then …
Week-by-week, I see no progress. But when I look back at our ineptitude a year ago, struggling with the MCA, I have to say that the progress is monumental. Our situational awareness and our rapid responses are all a hundred times better. In that sense things are improving a lot.

Morning, all. It’s good to be home.
Is the American Economy already in a recession well how would we know? Even Alan Ableson in “Barron’s ” business magazine was talking about how he didn’t trust the Labour Secretarie’s numbers a week or two ago.
Since we can’t trust those numbers and since Bush already has such a fine reputation for both honesty and competence.
I think all the Democrats should just talk and agree to all say that we are in a recession already.
Its a good talking point.
I know collusion sounds unethical but the GOP and the MSM have all been colluding about what to say about Hillary.
Notice the insults against her are all the same the talking points the issue CNN talks about is the same one Rudy and Mitt say on any given day.
Why because the GOP and the MSM between them have only one brain and that is Karl Rove’s.
A little colluding and message coordination would be good for our side to do once in a while.
Morining Burnspbesq.
Are we in a recession the experts say they won’t know until after it has happened.
http://www.alleyinsider.com/20…..tch-7.html
The finanical system is in $2 trillion dollars worth of trouble. Its not the “Long term investors ” which is code for little people, its the leveraged guys Bush’s base.
All the monkeys in 3 piece suits who said that liberals don’t understand business.
All the ones who are against welfare for the poor who believe in pulling yourself up from your bootstraps.
That is until they need help because now they are in troulble.
Has the MSM asked Mitt how Bain Capital is doing in the subprime crises?
Have they asked Bush 1 if his Carlyle group would accept money from a government bailout of hedge funds if the situation gets worst.
What about Morgan Stanley and Citicorp do they think they deserve to be helped sooner and more than the people they are throwing into the street?
These guys could help people by refinancing the mortgage loans, but that would mean they would have to accept losses now on their balence sheet.
By delaying the losses they put off the problem until a democrat is in charge hoping that they can force the Dems to bail them out.

bobschacht @ 182
Jo. She’s sensible but assertive.
” The problem with this reasoning, however, is that it’s basically what the Federal Reserve did when it lowered interest rates to 1 percent in 2003. Now, they’re stuck with inflation created by the Greenspan led Fed and a deflating housing bubble that is hammering credit markets. If the Fed cuts now and another economic crisis comes along, the Fed will again be caught between a rock and a hard place, only next time it will have even less ability to act because failing to meet long-range forecasts could damage the credibility of those forecasts. “
http://seekingalpha.com/articl…..ed-s-hands
But perhaps Bernanke wants to tie the Fed’s hands to some degree. Although he has frequently stated that the Fed has a dual mandate of low inflation and full employment, he has yet to say that full employment is an appropriate goal for the Fed, only repeating the line that the Fed has this dual mandate. According to an article in this morning’s Wall Street Journal, Bernanke’s “original goal” was “an explicit inflation target.” Also from the article, he was opposed to an explicit target by other FOMC members “because of concerns it would reduce their flexibility to guide the economy.”
Only next time it will have less ability to act ” Like during a Democratic Presidency perhaps?
The Fed is laying time bombs for the next Democratic President and the Democrats are saying and doing nothing about it. Just who is advising Democrats on economic matters Penn? Rahm? where are Rubin and Reich?
Rahn and Penn what are we going to do with those guys. Its like they live in opposite world. 70% of people are against the war but Penn has Hilary chasing after a nonexistent center, or worse the 30%ers who HATE HER!
Rahm would have the Democrats be tough on immigration. Because he thinks that we can steal this issue from the GOP?
Has he polled the Lou Dobbs, Ron Paul viewers/supporters? They are not going to like you Rahm nomatter what you do to fit in.
However Rahm Hispanics a loyal DEMOCRATIC voting group might stay home this election and if the Dems lose you will be blamed.
When people say divide and conquer they did not mean for you to divide your own forces and let yourself be conqured!
We need to do something about these two besides the constant ridicule, maybe a promotion to a postion where they can’t do any harm perhaps?
Kaubuki, spot on, meme anyone else, like, tired of these shopworn phrases?
Morning Raven, You’ve been missing from the early morning crowd. How’s it going?

I’ve had this really nasty cold and I’m trying to get better for our trip to the Gulf Coast tommorow. thx
Good morning, pups. It’s TOMC and Bob Herbert in the NYT today. TOMC seems to have watched the debate. She says when it’s time to take on the Republicans, she would prefer the Democratic candidate who knows how to change the subject and stack the deck. Mr. Herbert says the debates over health care that we’re getting from the presidential candidates seem out of sync with the enormity of the problem.

The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, I’ve got buckwheat pancakes today, and there’s a pot of oatmeal too because it’s COLD. When I went out to get the paper my thermometer said it was 34, and the Weather Channel says it’s 31 (maybe somewhere more exposed, with more wind). Have a good Saturday, and stay warm.
Raven, Take care. How’s the water supply in Athens? It’s time to start hoarding gallon jugs of water for drinking. I use a Brita filter normally, but I’m not sure that will take care of all the chemicals they are going to have to use to purify the dregs of Lake Lanier. The idea of bathing and shampooing my hair in dregs is not appealing.
Good Morning!
Good Morning Marion!
JPL @ 199
It sucks. They have been making a big push to tell everyone how dangerous greywater is but it turns out it’s more of an “enforcement” issue than a public health problem. I’m sure we’ll get some grief in Destin from angry gulfers now that Moon Pie Perdue got them to slow the flow from Lanier.
Off to coffe with the Bohdisattva, later ya’ll.
What do these 2 items have in common?(1) American F-16 jets dropped two 2,000 lb. bombs on an island believed to be used by insurgents as a staging ground for attacks in Iraq…leatherneck.com (2) Rahm Emmanued wants to combine the dept. of Homeland Security with DOD.
molly @ 204
They both make my hair stand on end.
molly @ 204
insanity?
Good morning.
Molly@204
Do you have links to either story?

Things Come Undone @ 188
Government data drones are pretty far down on the food chain when it comes to politicization. I’ve been out of the business for almost 8 years and I don’t underestimate the extent of W’s corruption of govt services, but I still find it hard to believe that they’ve gotten to the point of influencing the bowels of data production. Otherwise, for example, industrial production would not have been reported down 0.5% in October: http://www.federalreserve.gov/…..efault.htm
But I’ll keep my eyes open for manipulation. Also, keep in mind that for an economy the size of the U.S. and with data operations chronically underfunded, there’s always a large range of uncertainty around any number that’s published.
Elliott @ 208
Oh, yes, parts of HomeSec, not the whole dept. Bad enuf, but not quite so catastrophic as your 204.
Also, How about Wilkerson’s desire to disappear StateDept into DOD, that he was touting about a year or so ago when he first came out against the war? He was everyone’s best friend at the time, as no one seemed to notice his militarization of (laughingly-referred-to-as) diplomacy.
eCAHNomics @ 211 –
i guess there’s been a lot of talk among people who might know that the there’s something not quite right with the way the inflation and unemployment numbers are calculated/estimated – not that the folks doing the number crunching are fudging but that maybe there’s something off in the algorthims used and what’s counted / what’s not counted. so that tends to give me (who doesn’t know how the sausage is made) some lack of confidence in other numbers are well – do they measure what we’re told they measure?
anyway, just wanted to defend the “data drones” while saying i understand the distrust that others may have, because i have some myself.
eCAHNomics @ 212
i also heard an interview with him which, after rightly complaining that the cabal wanted to make decisions for everyone and not allow others (like wilkerson and powell) participate in the decision making process)…. then go on to pretty much say that the people of haiti shouldn’t be allowed to decide who their leader should be if we don’t like their choice.
there’s an awful lot of people who think that the reins of power and insider status should be expanded – but only until they are included… after that they make excuses for not including anyone else.
Good morning pups!
selise @ 213
Having been out of the loop so long, I wouldn’t doubt that some major biases have crept in to economic data production. My susupicion is based on my knowledge that the operations are chronically underfunded, and as the economy changes, you need research (i.e., nonproduction) workers to figure out how best to fold these changes into the stats. I would guess that the research operations are well behind where they should be to keep up with the changes.
However, the specific problems that I’ve seen raised (like yours about whether consumer prices are included) have turned out to be inaccurate.
So mistrust and respect are both warranted.
This’ll be good, Bush invites Gore to White House Nobel ceremony
not exactly EPU’ed but from the last thread, something that makes me want to say your welcome, and aw shucks, but t’ain’t nothing that no other Pup woudd’n’a have done.
Good morning to the early rising westcoasters, eastcoasters, in the middlers and all over the world where the sun rises and sets upon Pupdom.
Baystate Bluestaters, previous late night has info on a Next Hurrah meetup today.
GoldenStater, good luck today on fighting petition fraud. Links in the last thread for practical advice on what to look for, photograph and especially record.
Loo Hoo. @ 291
Elliott @ 217
When I saw this yesterday, I noted that if I were Gore, I wouldn’t attend.
O Selise, this sort of thing doesn’t help at all. This correction from the send of Herbert’s column this morning. Sort of think that makes me grind my teeth.
6 minutes he gets in the debate for statements like this:

Hurray. E..Teller, thanks so much for keeping the lower 48ers aware of your state’s travails here and at the Muck.

Not to rain on this bit of sunshine, but vigilance is always a good thing.
eCAHNomics @ 219
I can see that but I want to see Bush have to honor Gore, myself.
selise @ 210
Selise,
Did I dream it last nite, or are you coming to meet Marcie EmptyWheeler at BC and not for a football game but to talk about the news?
If true, and you want to find me, I have, yea, you guessed it, redhair, midlength, am of the female pesuasion, and will be wearing a lilac campaign-sized button with the word SEEKER on it (that’s caps, not yelling).
My reading glasses are also harry potterish.
Christy’s upstairs!
Pull Up A Chair
eCAHNomics @ 216

BlueStateRedHead @ 218 –

still trying to figure out what the timing for the meetup is. have heard several different things.
selise @ 228
Emailed you, but so the world knows that the EastCoast Pups will be meeting at the same time as the West, here’s the meetup place according to pfred.
An Tua Nua. 835 Beacon St. ( 1 block from Kenmore Square toward Brookline) . Parking at a nearby hospital lot described on their web page.
Simultaneous Meetups. It’s an f**g conspiracy.
Ed*ard Teller @ 45
That’s amazing. Big changes abornin’ in Alaska I predict!
eCAHNomics @ 211
Alan suggests Bush’s Labour Secretary not the workers are the problem. Also I think it was some kind of birth, death index that was at varriance with an actual labor survey?
I’m sorry I don’t have more details I threw my copy of Barron’s away.
eCAHNomics @ 211
Believe it. I used to work for Commerce. They have been trying to get past unfortunate facts for a long time [eg bold].
I have RIGHTS! I demand a writ of habeas cattus!
TheOtherWA @ 147
Absoulutely, if we tried to give a bath to our two six month old kittens, we wouldn’t have a face left.
Welll…I missed that. What did bathing that adorable kitty have to do with those four words?
Because I do have a gay cat, ya know.

Thought your comment was so astute I posted it over at Eschaton.
Amazingly, if there were video of waterboarding a dog, the country would go crazy against that form of torture.
People? “Others”? Not so much.
Barney? Mukasey have a dog? (Snark, you NSA watchers.)
