Rich Texas bastard T. Boone Pickens boasted that he would give $1 million to anyone who can disprove “even a single charge” leveled by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, who he funded to the tune of $3 milion. Kerry offered to meet with Pickens and do so, with the million dollars going to veterans’ charities.
But now Pickens is reneging:
Pickens, who provided $3 million to bankroll the group during Kerry’s race against President Bush, responded by saying he won’t consider giving Kerry the reward unless he surrenders his combat films, additional military records and wartime journal.
In other words, Pickens was full of bravado when he made the offer in a keynote address in front of a bunch of friendly right wingers at an American Spectator dinner, but when Kerry took him up on it, he was a bit too cowardly to back it up:
“While I am prepared to show they lied on allegation after allegation, you have generously offered to pay one million dollars for just one thing that can be proven false,” Kerry wrote to Pickens. “I am prepared to prove the lie beyond any reasonable doubt.”
“Just one thing” has turned into more records than George Bush has willingly surrendered under government subpoena:
In his response, Pickens wrote: “I am certainly open to your challenge,” but he said he would not pay Kerry unless the senator first provided him with copies of his wartime journals, as well as movies he shot while on patrol and his complete military records for 1971 to 1978.
Pickens said such documentation, which the group has previously sought, would be needed to disprove its ads.
“When you have done so, if you can then prove anything in the ads was materially untrue, I will gladly award $1 million. As you know, I have been a long and proud supporter of the American military and veterans’ causes,” Pickens wrote.
“A proud supporter of the American military” — not to the point of actually, you know, enlisting or anything. More of the “yellow elephant” variety one would expect from a big Rudy Giuliani fundraiser.
He then goes for a Rovian jujitsu move: saying that if Kerry “cannot prove anything in the Swift Boat ads to be untrue,” Kerry should agree to give a million dollars to the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.
I’m assuming Pickens would appoint himself arbiter of such a deal, and show as much integrity with regard to the decision as he did when he made his original offer. Kerry ought to keep his hands on his wallet, but he seems to be aware of that:
In his letter to Pickens, the senator challenged the billionaire’s honor.
“I trust that you are a man of your word, having made a very public challenge at a major Washington dinner, and look forward to taking you up on this challenge,” Kerry wrote.
Yeah, Pickens’ word and a buck twenty-five will get you a bad cup of coffee at the 7-11.

Ha ha, I love it :-)
The sentence construction 3 was lousy, sorry; was rushing to get the news out in the hope that someone can parse it for us.
And Newsweek opines that Kerry is icky for putting together documents that rebut the Swift-boating charges.
I cant believe an oilman and hedge fund manager would ever lie.
That’s being generous…
Hi Jane! Nice grab!
I caught a mistake in the very first line of this post:
There fixed.
Pickens is a punk.
whew! home now! still sick, still grumpy but I got to talk to the fraud guys in the election division of the CA Sec. of State today… seems like they have received a few reports of identical monkey business by the people who are gathering the signatures for the electoral college vote split.
the little wanker, John, is back at the Target this afternoon but my head is too funky to make a plan (and a disguise).
Makes for some Rich Texas bastard T-Bone Pickin’s…great with Jack Daniel’s BBQ sauce..

I don’t know how you all can stand living in the same country with these primitive rednecks.

Oh, I forgot.

Pickens is from Holdenville, Oklahoma. His father was an oil man. Lahoma tells me that oily guys can be yellow thru and thru. I agree.

Good for Kerry. Had he demonstrated such pluck when it counted, he’d be President today. I liked Kerry til he folded up his tent too early in stolen Ohio 04. I believe that Kerry would have made a good president. Too bad. OTOH, T Bone Booger Picker is an assh*le.

I hope Kerry makes a great big deal out of this. He could make the challenge VERY public, and make sure Americans all know what a sniveling outfit bought those ads. Take a few percentage points off the diehard Bush base maybe.

I need to ask the lawyers at the lake a question though;
excuse me, isn’t this a binding contract?
can’t a suit be brought to force the echange if someone takes him up on the challenge?
for instance, if a bank posts a reward for information they cannot reneg on that reward if a person satisifies the conditions.
I think kerry needs to take this to a court challenge

same thing here, the more they are exposed the more brazen they become

this is robber baron, these maggots are experimenting with their failed federalist economic philosophy and every time they try it, it fails, but they try again and again
now they are trying to deliberately break our armed forces so we are forced to privatize our national security, they are doing it on purpose and black water is just the beginning

I also called the OC registrar’s office… they have no enforcement power but were quite interested in what was happening… the kid on the phone referred me on to the DA’s office, but I’m thinking the Sec of State has the power on this one… be very nice if the AG’s office got involved.
In regards to all the booing of Edwards and Obama during the debate, take a gander at this…
It is as many of us suspected. The NV Democratic Party machine packed the audience with Hillary ringers:
‘I am so disappointed with the Democratic Party of Nevada. These folks are not Democrats, they’re Hillary supporters.
The audience was an embarrassment and I am ashamed to be from this city. No wonder we elect mob lawyers for Mayor.
The audience was basically divided into two sections. One side was UNLV, the well behaved section and the other
section was the Hillary (oops, I meant the DNC) section. The DNC section is where I was seated and it was filled with
Hillary supporters. The guy next to me said he was for Edwards and lied, because the only person he cheered for was
Hillary. Loud, obnoxious, women were sitting behind me that talked throughout the debate and sneered “trial lawyer”
every time Edwards spoke and called Obama “arrogant”. I wanted to turn around and tell them that I guess they didn’t
have the nerve to call him “uppity”.

For example, how can Robert Gates say he’s going to have to start closing military bases if Congress doesn’t give him another 50 billion dollars just after they gave nearly 500 billion? Don’t the armed services committees in congress have anything to say about this?

You’re right. Where is the Target located? Has anyone from Debra Bowen’s office told you what’s going on wrt follow-up on this?
Texas Bone Pickens, a big Bush fan and Swiftboat Daddy Warbucks named his first Oil company Mesa Petroleum. Poppy Bush called his Zapata Offshore, and Dubya named his Arbusto. Coincidence? Or do all Texas Oil men like Spanish (Mexican) names?
bobschacht @ 62
Just the image of little yellow elephant logos all over our ads sounds like fun to me!
hackworth @ 77
arbusto is Spanish for bush, no?
so isn’t a public challenge a binding contract?
I am sure it is, if a store or company posts for a reward they are bound to make good on that reward
I am pretty sure kerry can hold pickens to this as a binding contract
could someone who is lawyer offer their opinion please?

as of this morning, he had gotten a “few” calls and they were thinking of sending an investigator to the store. He is hearing the same thing from other areas. He was pretty non-commital but was quite entertained by my description of the wrestling match over the clipboard and essentially gave me a “thumbs up”… he was also aware of the story in the UCSB student newspaper.
He has my phone number.
I only wish I could somehow get these guys on tape! That would be the corker… if the same little ditty comes out the kids in RSM as in Davis, that would certainly cement the conspiracy theory and couldn’t just blame the kids themselves.
I suppose fair is fair. In which branch of the military did any of the presidential candidates serve. Republican or Democratic?
Zapata is a shoe or the name of a Mexican Revolutionary War hero. Mesa is a table or plateau. Arbusto is an oil company that goes broke.
Millineryman @ 85
I thik kerry needs to put action behind his words
pickens entered into a binding contract when he said verbally he would give a reward if anyone met his challenge
that is a binding contract and kerry needs to force the issue if he really means what he says
done
if kerry doesn’t force pickens to make good on this binding contract then kerry falls yet lower in my eyes
I see Bush and Cheney like the Emperors with no clothes…they are arrogant and strut around with all their hot air and tirades, but the world is observing them as who they really are…greedy, madmen, naked, takin’ a dump, but with their finger on the button. Take the toys away, and they are a couple of wrinkly old flabby gas bags, scared of being charged with war crimes and such…
They aren’t even worthy of coming to any Texas BBQ…all they’re worthy of are the pickin’s from an old, rotten T. Bone bastard and his ilk.

I’ll give the million to charity. Someone else can do the same. Why does it have to be Kerry to deliver the proof? I don’t know a thing about the particulars of the book and of course don’t have any proof that would win the bet. Kerry obviously does and so do many others too.
So why hasn’t the bet been taken up. Someone call Kerry, promise to give the money to the charity of his choice and get the proof to win the bet. Pickens can’t demand my military record. I wasn’t in it.
CTuttle @ 100
I do too.

I would like someone to ask kucinich if he will persue articles of impeachment when he becomes president even though bush would have left office by then
that would be a GREAT point to get into public discourse
all right, I just did what I thought I could this evening – called the investigator back in the SoS office to let him know my little buddy, John was still gathering signatures at the Target this afternoon…
maybe he will do a STING! (ooo! that would be exciting!)
Kerry would not be doing this unless he knew he would prove T-Boner wrong, and T-Boner knows it. Chicken. T-Boner’s would seem to get….”stuck”…
Bawk, bawk, bawk..
Snort!
perris @ 113
I’ll posit that question at his site if you will.
SanderO @ 42
If Kerry were completely right and the swiftboaters completely wrong or any variation on that theme, then it was Kerry’s job to aggressively and effectively demonstrate the truth during his campaign. Kerry should have been fully prepared to rebut these attacks and then some. Now the rap is that he did not effectively rebut the swifties during his campaign but even more so since the campaign.
Kerry in DC in 72 was an egotistic flake or so it seemed to me. Since then he has been in elective politics but mostly he has devoted himself, so it seems, to marrying rich and richer women.
Let’s forget about Kerry as quickly as we can.

Prince Bandar, was former Saudi Ambassador to the US and loyal Bushie. He also received enormous kickbacks on weapons deals. But Bandar says Saudi Arabia could have helped stop the 9-11 attacks. They had spotted the hijackers as agents and were apparently following them. But the US did not act in “seriously” enough-strange words regarding a terror attack.
It has been claimed some of the alleged terrorists are alive and well. Also, some of the hijackers were trained at US military bases. Atta was paid $100,000 by ISI (Pakistan intelligence). But Saudi Arabia knew they were agents, for someone.
CTuttle @ 108
I was wrong, it was the Reserves from wiki:

but I’ll say it again, it’s a binding contract, he can’t back out of it if he’s taken up on posted reward, he has posted a reward and he has been taken up on that, he has no choice
at least this is my understanding of contract law and I am not a lawyer so I would like one to offer their opinion

If Gore were to have run, he served in the Army in Vietnam from 1969-1971. But you’re right, they’re the only Democratic candidates that have served.

I was with the VVAW in DC in 71, not 72. We all knew that he was angling for something more but he also provided a sense of legitimacy many of us could not at the time. When they closed the gates of Arlington in our faces, with Gold Star Mothers with us, he did a good job of keeping the lid on it. We came back the next day and they let us lay our wreaths. I was not happy that he didn’t fight back immediately when those punk ass SBVT motherfuckers started their shit but I still respect John for what he is. He didn’t have to go to the Nam and he did and he didn’t have to stand up, but he did.
Ann in AZ @ 137
Correction
Gore was shipped to Vietnam, arriving on January 2, 1971. He served for four months with the 20th Engineer Brigade in Bien Hoa and for another month at the Army Engineer Command in Long Binh.
raven @ 138
My office was right next to VVAW on 43 Ivy Street. I saw Kerry a lot. Going to Nam cannot be a credential which obviates the seeming truths about Kerry, That said, I mean no disrespect to anyone who wishes to respect and follow Kerry solely on the basis of his military service. For me, however, the real Kerry is having dinners at the Rotunda in 72 across from the VVAW headquarters and on a sailboard with bolle sunglasses in 2004.
What did you expect out of a GOP wingnut dandy named T. Boone?

Of course, any pretext that reminds us not to let Boone Pickens out of our sight is always welcome.
Pickens: What a fraudulent piece of asswipe. IMHO.
Why would Pickens pay Kerry the money if the Senator continues to hold back his military records from public scrutiny?
McCain’s released his *full* military record. To the public. Unedited. Unredacted.
Good for McCain.
Kerry has released only selected, carefully filtered files.
Kerry still acts like he has something to hide.
I gave $20 to the Swift Boaters. In hindsight it was probably the best investment that I ever made.
Hillary is the only one that can break up this right wing machine. Obama can’t handle them – they will eat him alive.
RonD @ 29
Yep! Bush and Cheney and Condi cavort with these people and see nothing wrong.
Her crime..being alone with men…200 lashes. And they likely gave the men reduced sentences because she “seduced them”.
dakine01 @ 124
And here’s a little bit of an oddity….Dodd’s wife is a Mormon. Wonder how they work that out.
Yeah, Pickens’ word and a buck twenty-five will get you a bad cup of coffee at the 7-11.
Having grown up in Texas… it would also get you a better cup of joe at the “Tootin’ Totem.”
When I first heard this T-Bone Pickens “bet” I knew that he would immediately raise the requirements.
He said “any single thing” proved a lie. SINGLE THING!
Now he’s not only requiring evidence for ALL the things…but he’s saying that he will determine what meets the criteria of proof. AND he’s insisting that Kerry provide records of all sorts of things that are utterly irrelevant to the charges the Swiftboaters made.
They just want more ammunition for attacking Kerry and his crew. Likely looking for things like the guys smoking pot, or joking about having sex with gals in Saigon. Or just bitching about the war.
None of that would have anything to do with their charges, which were based on the “evidence” and statements of the Swiftboaters based on nothing at all. Kerry can clearly show that ONE, and likely Quite a few, of these accusations are utter lies.
At least they would be if viewed by a neutral arbiter.
This is just exactly how the Creationist wackos change the rules when they put up $1 million to anyone that can “prove evolution”. They change evolution to their definition of what they “think” it is (rather than what the scientific community considers the definition); then they establish their own select panel of judges (none of whom are Scientists). It turns out that the amount is something they could never pay anyways…they might as well say they’ll pay $158 trillion dollars.
And this sort of chicanery goes back to when Alfred Russel Wallace took up Flat-Earther named John Hampden, who said that no one could prove the earth was round by demonstrating the curvature of a body of water. Wallace provided experimental evidence of such curvature. Wallace had obtained the promise that the editor of The Field would be the judge. And he won the wager. But Hampden simply said he wasn’t convinced the evidence was either real, or convincing. He wrote hundreds of letters declaring Wallace cheated, was a fraud, was deranged, and other slanders. He also sued Wallace for for slander and libel on HIS character!
Wallace spent years wasted in the Courts, and eventually got all Hampden’s suits tossed and a guilty verdict in a counter-suit. But the Flat Earther declared bankruptcy, and said to his followers that Wallace had never been paid the £500 award “despite his claims that he had proved the earth wasn’t flat. Such a notion is utterly illogical and against the Holy Scriptures!”
Man, it is so satisfying to witness all the angst over an election long decided. It’s a real headscratcher why anyone would find any food for the soul whippin’ a dead horse over and over, year after year.
Even better entertainment is watching that treasonous narcisist Kerry raise his head occasionally to block the door to that ‘ole war closet with all his might. Bleeding fingernails in the walls, bulging eyeballs and all that. Maybe a little slobber running out of one corner of the mouth onto that oh-so-attractive lantern jaw..
Kerry just can’t seem to avoid exhibiting all the obvious signs of perpetual guilt. He’s like a dusty idol the libs have quietly toed over into the corner that they just can’t help but parade out every now and then until he fizzles out and gets toed back again.
For those who support(ed) Kerry and AlGore, why not use all that energy gnashing your teeth over something you cannot do anything about and get behind a lib with honor and real character for the next presidential election?
um, strike that..
Interesting how some folks crawl out from under the bridge whenever certain subjects come up.
If they receive no sustenance, they usually crawl back in a little while.
The election was not decided fairly , but was stolen by a bunch of frauds who claim they have Vietnam experience. This country has gone to pot as exhibited by a bunch of ignorant-minded, right wing Nazis who claim they have this country’s best interest at heart. History will show that the demise of this country to a second rate country was brought about by the likes of the awiftyboaters. Fortunately, the next president will set the records straight and send all of you frauds to hell.
This still doesn’t clear T-Bone Pickens and the Swift Boat Liars of their slanderous assault on the honor of all members of the U.S. military…past and present.
Some patriotic American at the U.S. Navy Department realized what these conservative cretins had done in attacking the medals awarded Lt. John Kerry for valor over in Vietnam.
So, three weeks before the November 2004 elections, the U.S. Navy Department issued an official statement defending their awarding of medals for valor to Lt. John Kerry as well as any other medals they’d ever awarded anyone for valor.
Do you understand yet?
T-Bone Pickens and his cutthroat Swift Boat Liar pals, in smearing Sen. John Kerry’s Vietnam record, essentially said that the U.S. Navy Department had screwed up. T-Bone and his conservative hit-men pals, therefore, cast doubt on the validity of all medals awarded, not only those from the U.S. Navy Department, but from any branch of our military.
Because, certainly, if the U.S. Navy Department has a habit of issuing medals for valor erroneously, then all branches must be following the same slipshod vetting process in issuing medals to their service members.
I served in the U.S. Air Force around the same time Lt. John Kerry was serving our nation over in Vietnam and at the same time another lieutenant, George W. Bush, was skipping out on his Texas Air National Guard duty.
I didn’t receive any medals for valor (nor did I go AWOL), but just like anyone in the U.S. military, I did receive medals…and I didn’t take it very kindly having my own medals that I earned while in the USAF spit on by T-Bone Pickens and the slimeball Swift Boat Liars.
Because, I repeat, if the U.S. Navy Department could err in issuing medals for valor to Lt. John Kerry, then the medals I earned in the USAF must be just as worthless since the USAF follows the same medal-vetting practices as the U.S. Navy, as per military regulations.
And to top it off, if my medals and Lt. John Kerry’s medals were fraudulently issued, then any of the medals issued to the Swift Boat Liars must be just as worthless, as must all the medals be that were issued to any of the thousands of members of the Swift Boat Association. (No wonder that out of the thousands of this association’s members, the Swift Boat Liars could only find just over two hundred to join T-Bone Pickens in his smear campaign against Sen. John Kerry).
Well, for a little more perspective:
“This donation also includes contributions from employees in his company.”
I’m sure he was happy to take the credit, though.
apetra @ 150
Actually, that’s not true, and I’m pretty sure you know it.
And maybe you could explain to us exactly what is missing from the files you and everyone else has seen?
Hawkeye Jim @ 151
Yeah, they really enjoyed spending your wad at Disneyworld.
Joseph @ 157
Ummm! Dude. It was T. Bone Picken’s who challenged Kerry with the bet. It was the Swiftboaters who brought the subject up again. It’s folks of your ilk who are obsessed with the past…with still fighting a conflict that’s 40 years old. Over half the voting age population in this country wasn’t even BORN when the Gulf of Tonkin resolution passed.
Get with the current fiasco, buddy. The one costing the country $250 billion and 1000 US soldiers lives each year. Or maybe the next one in Iran.
And I’m wondering if there’s a bit of sock-puppeting going on here!
Joseph @ 157
In that case your man Pickens has no reason to weasle, squirm, and equivocate.
What’s he so afraid of?
Hey Jane, have you enlisted? No? Then don’t claim that you’re a supporter of proud veteran John Kerry, you damn chickenhawk hypocrite.
I am assuming that Brian had his tongue rammed firmly into his cheek when he wrote that…
Foreigner @ 14
Speaking strictly for me, my home is my sanctuary. I work in the public school system in Florida. The little peeps will keep you honest, and it is my pleasure to work with them. I stay away from all adults that even look like they may know a neo-con……..PERIOD!!! I’ve become quite adept at sniffing them out. They wear a smug smile, and are extremely shallow, and self-absorbed.
That said, Kerry should kick TBoone’s ass clear across Texas and back. Kerry must form a united front with the charities he’d select, and embarrass the hell out of this cheap bastard. That’s the only way he’ll keep his word. He has no shame, so just keep slamming him in the media.
What is john kerry hiding? Why won’t he release his full military records?
And what about that wacko wife of his? She would have been a train wreck of a first lady…
i am not even going to ignore vv.
Kerry promised several times to sign the 180 and release his records. He has failed to do so.
Perhaps he is hiding something?
Viet Vet @ 169
And what about those wacko trolls showing up here? What a train wreck they are.
Tell us exactly which records are missing from the ones Kerry has released.
punslinger @ 171
You know perfectly well he’s done so at least four different times.
Why don’t you tell us what’s missing?
To the trolls who have emptied out of the wingnut chat rooms:
How about staying on topic and telling us all exactly what releasing his military records has to do with taking up Chicken Pickens’ challenge to prove a single claim wrong?
Be specific.
This thread seems to have touched a nerve. Perhaps some people asking questions have an ulterior motive? Maybe I should come up with some questions of my own? Exactly what was John Kerry doing while George Bush was AWOL from the Texas Air National Guard and snorting coke? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop? Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? What would you do for a Klondike Bar?
It sure is interesting to see what brings out certain commenters for the first time.
Either some folks are mighty defensive about this issue or there must be some serious overcrowding under the bridge these days.
Regardless of what brings them here, it’s best not to offer sustenance.
