Listen to Bob Iger, Sumner Redstone and Les Moonves gush over all the money they’re going to make on digital. Share paid to writers: $0.00.
It’s kind of like studio executive porn.
Meanwhile, John Edwards joins the picket line at NBC Burbank today at 1:45 pm, and SEIU is standing with the writers.

I notified the munchkins downstairs..
Good morning, Jane…
We’re a proud SEIU family!
{{{Jane!}}}
(also just passing through)
greedy bastards.
Salut, punaise, ca va bien? Tes affaires, ce sont bien passes?
And remember, these guys think they deserve this – that it is somehow their right to profit off the work of others and to abuse the relationship.
This is how they get rich; this is how they stay rich.
I have to admit the headline grabbed my attention…..
Thanks for posting this. I’m gonna put that YouTube clip on my (predominantly non-political) Vegas entertainment blog.
I support the writers on this issue, just as I support the undercompensated efforts of artists generally.
I thought is was a Jenna Jameson video..
Biodun @ 8
salut! no complaints other than tres occupe avec le travail
Woohoo!
If, as they keep telling the writers, they’re not making money on digital, where is the money coming from to pay these execs 8-figures-left-of-the-decimal-point salaries?
Digital is probably more profitable than theatrical release these days. Even if they paid the writers everything the writers ask for, they’d still be making money.
(’24′ is working overtime filming. Last weekend, both days. I think they’re trying to get at least half a season in the can before they run out of what passes for scripts.)

Good on Edwards!
It’s gonna be hard for them to make any money on no product, isn’t it? If the writers strike spreads beyond Hollywood, for instance should the CWA refused to say, work on telecom lines at the media companies that carry work that pays the writers nothing it would get ugly real fast, because it would essentially cripple their commerce in short order. Would the other unions honor those lines outside the Media Telco facilities?
If the Teamsters refuse to deliver DVDs to stores for the Christmas season, gosh that would be a shame.
It’s all interconnected to Sumner Redstone and his “peers” wallets, the goal should be to empty their wallets in the most legally painful way possible.
Support the WGA! It’s what’s right for America.
Ooops — sorry gang. In case anyone got stuck in the draft post, I hit publish instead of save. It’s not done yet — my bad!
Jane @ 16:
You’re sure it never crossed your mind? *g*

That’s a very effective video
bellesouth @ 17
Well, now. Has Reid begun to grow a spine at last, or is this just a coincidence?
I got word from my stupid union (IATSE) yesterday that they’re not only *not* supporting the WGA, but essentially calling the executive director of WGA a dirty fucking hippie in the bargain.
I am SO embarrassed to belong to IATSE today, and have written to tell them so, and written to WGA to voice my support.
“where am I, and what am I doing in this handbasket?”
annagranfors @ 27
that’s becoming a universal query

I always picture the Statue of Liberty gal saying it. she’s got an expressive face that could express shocked disgust real well…
Elliott @ 25
Yes it is. I put it up on my blog, too. Scroll down, current post.
Some of my peeps don’t like the intrusion of political stuff. Too bad, on this one. It’s relevant.
There are some industries that are enormously profitable to those who own them: pro-football, baseball, the entertainment industry, network television, even surprisingly many newspapers. But these same owners always act as if they are poverty-stricken. For them it is not about sharing some of the wealth. It is not about making money hand over fist but making more and more money hand over fist. So pro sports put in salary caps. The entertainment industry shortchanges those who actually create the content they sell. Networks put on cheap reality and game shows. Newspapers engage in never ending cycles of cutting staff.
It all reminds me of the story of the goose who laid the golden eggs. Except in today’s version, the owner begrudges every seed it takes to keep the goose alive because it cuts into his profits.
More on the Jenna Jameson connection:
Digital media galore!
OT..from the Reid statement:
(snip)
In an effort to solve it, I worked hard to confirm over 40 administration nominees in exchange for a commitment by the President to make progress on a number of important commissions.
When we reconvened after August break, I also worked to quickly move on the President’s new Attorney General.
I did this despite my own opposition to that nominee.
Even with all this hard work on our side, the commitments the administration made to me before August break were not met.
(snip)
And after this little show of defiance, he will go back to his old behavior and get another beating. It would be sad, except for the fact that our country is going into the shitter.
annagranfors @ 27
What reasons do they give for their position?
Steve-AR @ 33
Reid should have figured out by now that BushCo does not bargain in good faith. Ever.
here is one from Videologblog: Writers Strike (Colbert Report writers)
Fern @ 34
essentially that the time spent in preparation for this strike would have been better used in negotiation, and that IATSE members are losing work. the money graph, though, is the second, which is the DFH hitjob. it quotes the ExecDirector making obviously ironic statements about the progress of the strike, and tries to paint him as “unserious”.
the letter can be seen at:

Pretty dress…what there is of it :)
this is good news, it has the lead at think progress right now;

Yep. Small world, and more lawsuits:

Very Interesting…..
Maria Luisa, the UNLV student who asked Hillary Clinton whether she preferred “diamonds or pearls” at last night’s debate wrote on her MySpace page this morning that CNN forced her to ask the frilly question instead of a pre-approved query about the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.
“Every single question asked during the debate by the audience had to be approved by CNN,” Luisa writes. “I was asked to submit questions including “lighthearted/fun” questions. I submitted more than five questions on issues important to me. I did a policy memo on Yucca Mountain a year ago and was the finalist for the Truman Scholarship. For sure, I thought I would get to ask the Yucca question that was APPROVED by CNN days in advance.”

Steve-AR,
What is the difference between planted and pre-approved questions? I forget.

Brilliant comment.
Absolutely brilliant.
Things are so out of balance economically these days, that something like this is EXACTLY what should happen.
Digital is the future, and the writers need to insist on fair payment.
Fern @ 34
i found this illuminating:
IATSE chief bashes WGA, strike
a shameful failure of solidarity.
It is horrible to hear IATSE scream like a plucked rooster. They should know better.
The quicker other unions join and stand beside writers on the picket lines, the quicker everybody will get back to work, with fair deals in their pockets.
