Obama had a good point in the midst of all that (i.e., those with the top 6% income are not exactly in the “middle” of anything) but Jesus they booed him like he’d compared her to Hitler.
What debate moment will consume our elite media tomorrow?

Zed!
I’m just trying to keep up.
2? 3?
Impeach now.
Wish it would be so, but sadly it won’t.
Whew! Hi Jane. Let me think about that.
No Zed!
Probably Kucinich on Impeachment.
I had to turn it off when JC Watts came on the screen.
Ah, girl. You know it’s going to be about the pearls. At least they’ll be talking about them instead of clutching them.
Yet, impeachment got the biggest applause. Somehow Gergen, JC Watts and teh ragun Cajun are ignoring that….
I still think it’s Hillary or Obama. Of the two, I’d rather vote for Obama.
Loo Hoo. @ 7
Ha. If only. It will be all about the fact Hillary didn’t cackle.
EPU’d from end of last thread

HRC is a hawk … part of her basic politics …is it also a gender compensation, not sure though I think she feels she needs to be “tough” but so do so many male Dems.
Thank you Siun. I am the one, as I thought, seeing with Cyclopsian tunnel vision.
Heh, I just made that word up. Geddit?
Scholarly book titled “King of the Mountain” studied ALL the leaders of all countries in the world in the 20th C. Conclusion: alpha males, even much more than 50% in democracies. Of the 2% who were female, most were either daughters of or wives of.
So with those odds, what do you expect?
eCAHNomics @ 4
Not even a whiff of it…! 8-(
I liked Hil’s comment about Edwards taking a page right out of the Republican playbook…
snappy.
msm won’t discuss impeachment. maybe iran
Impeachment and Kucinich…bring them on!!!!
Make our day, mofos…..and the country knows it…but the MSM has a peculiar obsession with Hillary and Edwards….Snort!!!
OldCoastie @ 15
Other way around?
Just got home a little while ago. Missed most of the debate. Edwards didn’t shine? I’m so rooting for him.
Hillary about the mudslinging. That was heated and she was hot. Forgot until the talking heads got going on it.
I’d like to see a debate where the background isn’t a variant of the American Flag. They should show the Constitution, highlighting certain amendments.
Well now I’d rethinking my support for JE and thinking DK just might be worth a second look I really like what he said and how he said it.
Put us out of our misery….
Impeach, Please. Sooooon.
Although it’s true that Kucinich kicked ass.
eCAHNomics @ 13
Pakistan’s Bhutto is an example, however, Thatcher and Merkel earned it on their own…
ot – scj fisa markup meeting from ealier today is now being shown on c-span 2 (h/t pow wow) just starting now, spector up and talking about telco immunity.
Sound biting “boys club” answer. Guess that’ll play tomorrow.
Fozetti @ 21
Maybe a picture of Gitmo or being frisked at the airport.
Go Dennis!!!!
The Republican-CNN-YouTube debate is on my birthday. Hubby wants to take me out. Not a chance.
I’m not “into” the horse race concept. ‘Will keep on sending Richardson $$.
Tithonia @ 11
If Obama would forget his mentor Lieberman and stop talking about working with a criminal enterprise, then I would agree. Coming together with Republicans is a non starter with me.
eCAHNomics @ 27
I thought she handled it well, so it won’t hurt much.
solai @ 30
Ohh tape it and have a glass of champagne.
Gergen, Cooper, Watts, Carville – Building up Hillary and knocking down the others. MSM is determined to pick our candidate for us – Hillary. Honing in on the silly crap – ignoring all issues.
We have time.
CTuttle@ 25
Merkel is 21st C. As is BACHELET in Chile.
AAAaahhh! The post-debate coverage on CNN is completely worthless. I mean, Gergen, Watts, and Carville are the ‘the best political analysis team on television’?
Barf.
Loohoo @ 7, no.
Definitely not impeachement.
Roxanne @ 9, yes. Diamonds v. Pearls that’ll even make poxnews.
It wasn’t clear to me what they were booing about at that moment. I didn’t think it was about the 6% statement, but I couldn’t tell.
musicsleuth @ 34
Nope. Watching it live with all of you.
Bet like a gajillion dollars there will be a “diamonds are a girl’s best friend” headline sometime in the next 48 hours.
hackworth @ 35
It is like being dragged into the “house of mirrors” against your will.
I won’t go there. F ‘em.
Jane asks:
Greedy Hillary for answering BOTH to the final (ludicrous) question if she prefers diamonds or pearls while Biden hollers in the background that he likes diamonds.
Kucinich
In office experience for the better part of forty years.
Honest.
A history of being correct.
A history of reading legislation before voting on it.
He’s all about the Constitution and the rule of law.
When Dennis has a proposal, most of the time he has written bills in hand to back up his words.
He knows we must impeach our war criminals! And he knows the next president must reverse the unitary powers of the executive branch.
etc. etc.
Roxanne @ 42
I think U R right. I won’t touch that bet. If its stupid, they will come.
hackworth @ 35
Xactly — it turns me off in equal degree. Dennis is the smartest one of the bunch. Obama and Edwards didn’t exactly fall down IMHO and had some good sound bites.
Oh, and Andrew Sullivan and Camille Paglia will point out how Hillary is a faux feminist because she picked “both.”
Oh yeah…Dodd, Biden, and Kucinich were the real winners of the debate.
‘Diamonds or pearls?’
What a freakin’ waste.
I grow weary of the candidates claiming to want to pull the country together. I see this as code for capitulating with the very shrill racists and christianists that are the base of the corporatists and investor class.
I have no use in making this group happy at all, just so they cn whisper “comity” in my ear while they have their way with me.
In fact, the madder and more shrill they get, the happier I am.
Stow the singing of kubaya people.
kuchinich kicks ass because he’s actually…..i think the word is ’sincere’ in what he believes
Roxanne @ 48
Andrew Sullivan prefers pearls, because they are so much more subtle & high class than diamonds.
eCAHNomics @ 37
Not, Iron Maggie…! 8-)
iron cross or bayonet?
pardon.
oh wait. i mean ‘diamonds or pearls?’
This evening saw Jim Carville as Governor of Kansas in the film “The Assassination of Jesse James….” Will elite media comment? Will he run as actor/candidate for office?
Perpetual boxing analogies are pathetic! What a sorry buch of corporate lackeys. JC Watts, Gergen, Cooper, et al. Hungry like the wolf!
WAY OT:
This is what the kidlings want for chanukah/christmas. Multi-taskers that they are! I think they want one each.
Can you hear the laughter all the way across the country?
Oh, Jane, sorry, I forgot to answer your question. It matters little what particular snippet they pull out, but whatever it is, it will be translated as bad news for Democrats and good news for Republicans.
Or, one could vote for…pewk…people…gag…who think…buying…pewk $148,000 purses…gag…makes them a valid, important, human being….pewk….that we all should worship. Last time that happened on a large scale, correct me if I’m wrong, may have been Marie Antoinette..and her accesses…
Unbelievable that people could even think that way…
I don’t know about “building up Hillary” and knocking down Obama by the press… Matthews came all over himself the other day thinkin’ about Obama…
I still haven’t made up my mind. OldMother does not like Edwards even though I have been supporting him… she is not sharp on the details and can’t quite verbalize it, but she has a very good sense about people… she likes Kucinich, Clinton and Obama… don’t know the order of that…
I pay attention because her instincts are rather a “sense of the senate” kinda thing and she is usually right.
OT..Howie Klein has a bit more on the strange FISA vote:

Interesting that Hillary was talking about slinging mud when she has her campaign minions leaking to Drudge.
I thought the Obama comment about Romney and Giuliani was great, I don’t think it had time to sink in and the wonderful MSM will prob. not pick it up!
CTuttle @ 53
Books in the country & I’m in the city, so I can’t give you the list, but it’s mighty slim. Maybe one or two others than Thatcher.
We already know what the headlines will be, they came out in the early part of the debate…
Hillary accuses others of “mudslinging”
I’m not a fan of hers, but the first questions were all about her style, and to other candidates, were “what do you think of Hillary?”
Clinton is hungry! Hungrier than Obama says Carville. Hungry! Hungry Jack!
eCAHNomics @ 52
My answer to such a stupid question would have been sapphires, to toss ‘em for a loop. But ah well, i’m not up there and she was. Both those things are so bland it’s unreal, and of course status symbols in all their glory.
And yes, i really think that her answer is going to consume the MSM. What an easy trap to walk into! *faceapalms* Either refuse to answer a question like that, or find a smartass answer . (hence my reply of sapphires, which is actually the truth)
TexBetsy @ 57
kuchinich was allowed to speak for five minutes at the debate.
everybody enjoying free speech?
they hate us for our freedom (fries)
solai @ 19
I was late to the debate too and I think Edwards looked a lot better tonight than the last debate where he appeared a bit physically stretched out if not sleep deprived. He has my full primary support and I hope he continues to resonate with voters all the way to the White House.
TexBetsy @ 57
Whew, $5,500! Ooh, but, the havoc they could wreak…! Bwhahaha…!
Mabel’s Wig Shack @ 51
Exactly. There’s no ‘gotcha’ question with Kucinich. He’s a liberal and has always acted/voted his conscience without regard to public opinion.
Question for Mitt Romney:
To prevent a terrorist attack that would kill thousands of Americans would you be willing to have sex with a man?
Scarecrow @ 40
That’s why I’m watching the heads. I didn’t catch it.
You guys are probably right that the impeachment issue won’t be the big news, sadly. Kucinich just seemed pissed off all night to me, though. Not like someone who could create a team and lead.

i cannot take any more of the ‘debate’. why would democrats agree to do a debate on cnn with blitzer? they passed on fox. they should pass on the rest of the republican media as well. let bill moyers host a debate for democrats. then we might have dodd’s talk clock be level.
I think if they are going to ask Hillary about diamonds or pearls, it would only be fair to ask the men, “Boxers or briefs”… and why…

I need to record one of those YouTube questions to for the upcoming Republican debate:
Do you think Mike Huckabee shops at Home Depot or Lowes?
This debate demonstrates that without the moderator’s thumb on the scales (Russert in the last debate), Obama and Edwards aren’t very effective in taking on Senator Clinton.
Oilfieldguy @ 74
Hey, we don’t approve of torture here. (& just to make sure I don’t offend any of our gay commenters, I mean that this would be torture for Romney).

way OT, but I’m so depressed by this…
I got an e-mail from my IATSE local 700 (the Editors Guild) today–the aptly-named IATSE President Short sent a letter on “our” behalf to the head of the WGA, essentially calling their executive director a dirty effing hippie and suggesting that they settle and go back to work. Local 700 sent me a link to a .pdf of the letter (see it at http://www.editorsguild.com), asking that all members should be aware of IATSE’s position. unless that’s subtlety that’s just too subtle for me, I think they’re trying to tell us that’s supposed to be our position as a union.
it’s not MY position. I support the writers.

I’ve got enough basic media training to see what’s coming up at me. I wish some politicians had a basic course of that in addition to their law, so they’d not trot so blithely into those traps as it is!
CTuttle @ 117
That’s about as solid a source as…”some people are saying”.
selise @ 26
Yes, I’m watching the last phases of the debate now. Very interesting, and I look forward to someone untangling all the nuances. Apparently DiFi had a major hand in drafting the “substitute”, and Whitehouse announced that he was pissed at the White House. The “substitute” was approved. Spector is now offering a bunch of amendments.
Bob in HI
Tithonia @ 24
Dennis has consistently voiced clearly the Progressive positions. If more progressives had given him their support he would be contending right now…but they decided to saddle their horses with the two Populists that were “Prettier” but far more hawklike.
You can’t solve the problems at home until you get out of the interventionist foreign policy IMO. Neither of the MSM selected “big three” show much sign of doing that. Obama is at least the one who argues diplomacy more than the other two…BOTH of whom appear to need to demonstrate “testosterone” displays.
Check out how many times Edwards says “I will not take any response off the table” in this speech regarding Iran to many Israeli policy-makers (including Zionists Bibi Netanyahu, Natan Scharansky, etc.).
Edwards at Herzliya Conference in January 2007.
And if you read the above, it seems odd that he is attacking Clinton for voting for the Leiberman-Kyl Amendment. He says the same things REPEATEDLY in that speech.
How many times does he accuse Iran of funding Terrorists, like Hezbollah and Hamas? How many times does he ORDER Syria to stop working with Iran? How many times does he, erroneously by the way, say that Ahmadjinedad called for the annihilation of Israel? How many times does he say that Iran is the major foreign policy issue in the Middle East…because they are the largest State sponsor of terrorism?
And yet when he gets up in front of an AMERICAN audience does he demonstrate any of this stuff that makes him sound like he’s a Southern Baptist fundamentalist rarin’ to bring on the Apocalypse?
No…he makes it sound as if he’s gonna be all willing and capable of convincing Europeans and Russians and the Iranians that he isn’t a war-monger and negotiate away the Iranians right to build nuclear reactors.
It seems that he’s able to make charges about other peoples voting records simply because he’s no longer in the Senate and doesn’t have to vote on his views and positions anymore. At least with Clintons views one doesn’t have to dig up well-concealed speeches made to Israeli power brokers. You won’t find a link to THAT speech on Johnnie’s web site!
He’s either a flip-flopper, a demagogue who panders to whatever audience who is listening, or a stealth Manchurian Candidate for A*P*C.
Roxanne @ 9
Well that would be something. But don’t dismiss their ability to multi-tisk.

Media training does not teach you how to have snappy answers in real time, or how to reframe the issue in real time. I did instant analysis on TV after economic stats were released. Steve-AR @ 137
Only Lou Dobbs can save the U.S. of A. from the brown hoards.
dobbs is running as a third party protest candidate?
The challenge for Kucinich is the problem faced by all liberals. His un-slavish, un-corporate ways threaten the coziness of those who’ve chosen machine politics as their way to the top. Like HRC.
Dennis does his homework, gets it right and sticks to his guns. Anyone but HRC would put him in the Cabinet or a top agency, perhaps HHS. HRC, I’m afraid, will not promote anyone who’s competed with her or threatens her competence or “star power”. I think that she, and more so her people, have a Bush propensity to take names, savor grudges and plan payback. Of all things, we don’t need is for that to happen intra-Democratic Party.
We do need a de facto Truth and Reconciliation Commission to specifically target and undo much of what George has done to government. Lots of wrenches to extract from the gearworks of government.
Dennis is the right guy to have on the team, a do-the-right-thing guy that George Bush would laugh at because doing the right thing at the expense of power would never occur to him. Dennis would be eminently sellable to the electorate as a special teams player. Unfortunately, that makes him a threat to Demomcratic and Republican machine politicians, including those HRC surrounds herself with.

DiFi and Snarlin’ Arlen going at it. Snarlin’ Arlen wants an appellate court to be able to over-rule a FISC judge. The question was asked by an “undecided” young woman/student at UNLV. The Beard may be an ass, but he was not responsible for the question and using it to sandbag anyone.
I was serious about the Constitution being highlighted in the debates. Our constitution has been horribly mangled these last 7 years, and the Constitution is what the USA is ABOUT. Someone should point this out in a public way, and ask our candidates what they are going to do to restore it.
Okay guys — thanks Steve-AR — I’ll call tomorrow and see if I can get a copy that way.
Mabel’s Wig Shack @ 161
He has a rather consistent smile on his face..must be that.
Is Hillary saying she would like both diamonds and pearls triangulating? Or would she need to add in the emeralds for that?
Mabel’s Wig Shack @ 140
I mean exactly that. The inclusion of the corporatocracy/military industrial complex in collusion with government is implied in your definition with the term the male god of technological warmongering.
Oilfieldguy @ 74
That would be a good “follow up” to the “24 Question” about torture, I think.
TexBetsy @ 57
WOW!!!!!I have to get out the tape measure..an FDL window on each screen.
Loo Hoo. @ 169
I think they’re supposed to go with the asbestos pantsuit.
Curious, it’s been many a year since I dealt with thesis and dissertation things, but I vaguely remember that one had a choice about the extent to which the author allowed copying, in whole or in part (just like copyright–and some folks actually formally copyright). Have you checked with the library the thesis is housed in? Also, you might try the author directly about a copy, or finding republished version in other place.
Might be useful to know what the parameters are before you send someone out (in case you haven’t).
I think there are copying services that go to sites and copy things (they often work for law firms, for ex.).
Good luck!

“That people in Mrs. Clinton’s campaign orbit would tip off the Drudge Report to its fund-raising numbers is in part a reflection of her pragmatic approach to dealing with potential enemies, like Newt Gingrich or Rupert Murdoch. Inter-library loan? Though that can take time.
Because it’s not a lot of money, Jane. We who are approaching that cutoff income are also facing the AMT and in blue coastal states, out of control local taxation exacerbated by Bush’s stupid tax cuts for the rich.
Know what I want, Jane? I would like to be able to *spend* my measly 3% raise instead of making it over to Iraq and some crazy property tax increase brought about by federal cutbacks on education funding.
They were right to boo Obama. he is correct that someone should face a tax increase but he is targetting the wrong people. Revoke the Bush tax cuts and we’ll talk.
I’m aproaching the cutoff salary and here in NJ, I an not any where NEAR wealthy. Not even a teeny tiny little bit. Everything in this state is expensive.
If Obama was talking about household income, he was only off by 14% points:
The top 20 percent of households (those with incomes over $97,000) took home 50.5 percent of all income, while the bottom 20 percent (those making less than $20,000) took home 3.4 percent.

Figure I found for individual earners is 18% of earners are above the wage cap of $97K.

Don’t forget how close the Clintons have been to Lieberman. They cut their eye teeth on big elections campaigning for him back in the 1970s.
DLC Dems stand together.

Keep in mind Campbell Brown is a Republican. She is probably part of that R crowd that would rather have Hillary as THEIR conservative president than Rudy or Mitt.
Dodd utterly lost me when he said that “education” is the most important issue in this election.
THAT is straight out of the republican’s (and Hillary’s) “Please-God-don’t-say-the-Iraq-word” playbook.
And if Edwards and Obama WERE guilty of “mudslinging” (and boy, is this getting tiresome from a candidate who isn’t outraged enough to sling any serious mud at george bush about the miserable, useless, war which she has YET to apologize for supporting) just think of what the republicans are going to do to her.
What I don’t understand is why none of the other candidates have brought up the electability issue. Of course, they’ve got 6 weeks to do it, before the first primary.
When that happens we WILL see some fur flying…and it SHOULD be flying. :o)
Every time ANYONE calls for “civility” or “unity”, it is NOTHING but a buzz-word for “please stop goring my favorite ox, which is to say, my butt…”
And we NEED oxen to be gored in this election.

Everybody calls Hillary either Hillary, Hill or HRC. What’s this “Johnnie” crap?
Second, does his saying something really equate with her voting in the Senate on something which will give Dubya some justification for going to war?
Third, just what is Senator Clinton’s position (or positions) on relations with Iran? Does she still stand by labeling them as terrorists?
Seems to me their positions are pretty similar: all options on the table, recognize the danger they pose in the region (not to America) and be prepared to push diplomacy very hard before considering any military option. Isn’t that a typical Democratic candidate’s position?
If you just want to bash Edwards you should say so. But, if you really want to discuss issues and positions you’d better be ready to back up your accusations (the one that implies Edwards is a liar or stupid or hypocritical).
The Democratic candidates have to take this stance vis a via Iran because they aren’t in the White House and don’t have current intel and have to ‘keep options on the table’. It’s the responsible position to take.
MarkH@192:
I don’t for a moment believe that republicans want Hillary Clinton as their president. :o)
But the intelligent goopers who know that she’s their only chance to hang on to the white house, and to regain control of congress, sure as hell want her to run against.

Again, triangulation in action. Appearing to appeal to all people while not committing to anything unappealing.
Now, ask her if she likes cats or dogs, hotdogs or hamburgers, beer or soda pop. The list of questions like this is endless. You still won’t learn anything important about her. She won’t let you.
Pretty much, tangled up in blues:

Yeah, I have to agree there are plenty who likely see it that way too.

CinnamonApe; A*PAC is not (supposedly) a PAC. They direct funds to candidates, rather than make the contributions, themselves.
But in her 2006 election campaign, Clinton received just over $37,000 from A*PAC-directed contributions.
In her political career, she’s received $56,000.
John Edwards has received no A*PAC-directed funds.

So now the annoited one has her plants in the audience to silence her opponents??? And the circle jerk on Cnn post debate was pretty disgraceful. She is the choice of everyone in the top 2% and lucky for us that a bunch of women have no brains or ability to check the annoited ones record. This reminds me of Bush and dare I say we now have the same pathology in a pantsuit?? Asbestos my ass–a bought and sold power cabal.
