It’s not raining tonight, but I came across this song during our “Songs About Rain” thread last night and had to share it. This is from Grace Jones’ iconic “One Man Show” from the mid-80′s. An amazing performance with incredible work by reggae rhythm masters Sly and Robbie.
Enjoy!

I’ll be gooder this thread, I promise.
I read the title and said to myself, Grace!
I remember a Dead show in Sacramento long ago.. The entire show in pouring rain.. Only the Dead could do an entire show of rain songs to a sold out outdoor show and keep every single person dancing all the way through.
Here I am.
Oh, right.
Ice pack.
BRB.
Hmmm. @ 11
were you bad before?
I got a little uncharacteristically het up.
I blame Dell, and the Neighborhood Watch people.

Good night, sleepers.

selise!
CTuttle @ 51
Yeah, but it has been moved to Monday. Disadvantage of being a temp…
Anyone have a rundown of the scheduled follies on the Hill through the weekend?
Sunny and Selise!
Hmmm. @ 57
selise always has the congressional hearings up over at her place.. click on her name to get there
Ed*ard Teller @ 56
Relax, Rush status is still within your realm… ;-)
Thanks, Suzanne. I meant the plan for the Senate to stay in extended floor session, not hearings.
Hmmm. @ 61
whoops.. sorry
Hmmm. @ 61
Actually, Reid is planning Pro Forma sessions throughout the Turkey recess to circumvent Shrub’s interim BS!
Hmmm. @ 57
i think the house is not in session tomorrow, but the senate, i think, will be the “emergency supplemental” S.2340.
mondays and fridays there ususally aren’t many (or any) hearings.
that is all i know… but, there could be major stuff i don’t know about… i am seriously behind on my reading today.
CTuttle @ 63
What does Reid think the Congress is, a separate aond coequal branch of government, or something?
CTuttle @ 60
A pox on that notion, CT! I just wanna change things and write more music in a free fucking country.
neurophius @ 65
Umm, something called a ’spine’? Maybe?
et, what’s the weather tonight?
Hmmm. @ 61
i’m still trying to learn where to find stuff… so there’s probably a better source… but i’d check out reid’s statement on the expected schedule he gives to the senate floor at the begining of everyday (after the chaplain’s prayer). i think the senate is suppose to reconvene early tommorrow (8:30am?)
Suzanne @ 68
calm, semi-cloudy, about 20 degrees F. The dog wants to stay outside.
Ed*ard Teller @ 66
Shoot for the stars! The free f’ing country part, that is…! ;-)
What breed of dog, ET?
that’s cold to this californian et – i would be wanting to stay inside and i know my california dog would be saying the same thing
newtonusr @ 55
hey newtonusr! are you still here? i sent you an email about the problem i’m having posting the vCard file (for the senate). may i impose on you (again!) for advice?
loohoo, you should check out et’s pics on his f/b page – he has great pics of his dog all over his albums
Thanks much, Selise for the tip on catching Harry’s opening statement. Guess I’ll TiVo it, I’m not up by 5:30am PST.
Yeah, I heard about staying in session over the holidays to thwart recess appointments — which is truly great — but for everyone else — this thing I’m talkin’ about over the weekend is different.
TexBetsy @ 35
You are getting tired… very, very tired.
Your eyes are getting heavy… can hardly keep those peepers open. Sandman has come, and is circling round your head…. your mind is going blank…. except for one simple thought: must… find… bed….
Nighty night!

And all my Hawaiian Ohana, too!
Hmmm. @ 76
that’s exciting! thanks for the info – you are way ahead of me!
Loo Hoo. @ 72
I’m not sure. You help decide.
(deep sigh) off to do the floors (yes, including waxing) for the meetup saturday
remember, if ya are planning on attending and have not let me know, please email me at ten67x at google email thingie dot com for directions, etc.
g’nite all
You’re most welcome, selise. (And I’m most surprised to have passed info to you!)
Sweet dreams, Suzanne.
Suzanne – always waxing, never waning – nor whining.
The house WILL SELL!
Hmmm. @ 83 –
my motto is: we are smarter when we work together.
p.s. i’m really just trying to figure stuff out… only started watching lots of c-span and some hearings about one and a half years ago. i blame it all on christy – she got me hooked!
Suzanne @ 82 –
nite!
p.s. i would have thought that you’d need to do the cleaning and waxing after the meetup.
A couple of odd things.
Condy Backs Down on Forcing Diplomats To Iraq
Apparently they forced enough people to “volunteer”.
selise – ygm
You’re modest. I like modest.
Goodnight, Suz. And ET, ’tis a mystery the breed of your dog. German/black lab? Cutie, whatever!
selise @ 80
Sadly, it’s primarily a pyrrhic victory, considering the mammoth $450Bil Defense bill already passed, it’s easy enough to divert funds within DoD!
Who’s Push-Polling Romney?
No that’s not the “PushMe-PullYou” creature from Dr. Doolittle. “Push Polls” are sleazy Swift Boating like ads hidden in the guise of a phone survey. Quite expensive to undertake and usually only undertaken by a contender who is trying to take down someone leading the race…or force someone close further back.
Apparently Western Wats (commissioned by the Tarrance Group) has done surveying for both McCain and Giuliani in the past so suspicion has immediately fallen on those campaigns.
http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/
http://hotlineblog.nationaljou…..ins_1.html
“>Tarrance Joins Giuliani Campaign
Western Wats denies everything, says they would never do “push polls”…well except for the fact that similar push polls have been caught and the “poller” almost always say they work for “an independent survey Group called Western Wats”.

Moderator- Could you drop #95 s’il vous plait. Weird stuff happened on the preview so I posted the second part that didn’t show up and it duplicated the original that DID show up???
CTuttle @ 92
my goal is to learn how to see behind the kabuki.
Loo Hoo. @ 91
I got him from the animal control shelter when he was 5 months old. He was supposed to be lab-newfie, but his tail and ear stance show husky. That explains his reluctance to swim. He’s the best dog in the world, beyond gentle.
Edwards campaign manager Joe Trippi was on Hardball tonight. I’d never seen him before, and was negatively impressed. He seemed to be whining about the fact that Hilliary has lots of corporate money, but when Tweety asked him, “So what?”, Trippi seemed stuck for an answer.
selise @ 100
Dang, Ma’am, you expect a miracle…
Loo Hoo. @ 97
Or perhaps thinking in whispers?
I can’t hear myself thinking sometimes with all the gears and cogwheels scraping up there ;-)
newtonusr @ 89
thank you!
newtonusr to the rescue – again!
i hope the folks going to saturday’s meetup will let the rest of us know if newtonusr’s super human powers are apparent when you meet…. i wouldn’t be surprised by a superhero cape or something.
Seeing behind the Kabuki is an excellent goal. Had I more time, I might want to become an amateur parlimentarian. Can’t read the game if you don’t know the rules.
Fell into Judith Regan’s complaint against Harper/Collins and News Corp today, it’s riveting – the media echo-chamber at work and the mechanics of the smear.
Though it’s 70 pages long, the first 40 read like a novel. Dunno if she’ll get anywhere with the suit, but posting the complaint itself must have been gratifying. Her thesis is that her reputation was savaged at the direction of Rupert Murdoch to protect Giuliani’s reputation.
Her examples of simultaneous attacks by the interlocking media are compelling. If we hadn’t seen similar attacks it would sound like fiction. Given what we’ve seen, not quite so easy to brush it off.
Can’t say she comes across as particularly sympathetic, but she seems very real.
Ed*ard Teller @ 101
i love the pic of him and the black cat laying in the sun.
selise @ 100
More power to you, if you can see through that. The name of the game is “situational awareness.”
On a very positive note, compare the situational awareness and the responses that progressives have today compared to the fiasco that went down a year ago with the MCA. At that point, it seemed like nobody on our side had inside contacts, and nobody had a clue what was going on. There was some kind of kabuki going on with McCain, Warner, and the White House, but even when the final bill came out nobody knew for sure who was responsible for what, and why.
Good progress, but still a long way to go.
Hmmm. @ 106
But, Robert’s rules aren’t the only ones, they draw’em up as they go along, remember the ‘nuclear option’? *g*
CTuttle @ 103
it’s good to have goals in life… even if there’s little chance of success.
Hmmm. @ 106
it may come to that… i’m luck in that my rep’s aide to the rules committee has been very helpful in explaining some of the house stuff. and the senate parlimentarian is also helpful.
the house has some good online resources to learn more about the rules – at some point, i should really sit down and read it all.
haven’t found any decent resources on the senate rules though.
selise @ 104
Thanks selise, but really…
This kind of file mis-ident issue cropped up all the time when ftp became available to the masses, at least on the Mac, millions of years ago. Remember when “Fetch” was still free and university-distributed?
I think if you look in the “Transmit” upload prefs, you may find the setting that is causing you this grief. But stripping the “.txt” suffix works on the Mac side. I have no idea what to do with it on the PC.
Sorry, I must have missed the part where I claimed it’d be easy. ;-)
Did you see that Netroots Nation is doing an early registration?

Dkos on the ballot petition fraud thing.
Loo Hoo. @ 112
Yeah, looks like we’re going to get to see Betsy again this year!
newtonusr @ 119
Fly her down in your arms…? ;-)
wigwam @ 109
so much of what’s going on isn’t available to us… that’s probably part of the problem.
i’ve really found that watching c-span for the floor debates / actions has been a real help in seeing through some of the misinformation (or spin or whatever you want to call it). not unfrequently, something we get told is completely contradicted by what happened on the floor – like last week on the mukasey nomination vote, or the first weekend in august for the fisa votes.
and the new c-span archives – which are updated and annotated on the fly have been a godsend.
newtonusr @ 119
And all of the Central Texas pups maybe. LS, WangDangDoodle, GreenWarrior, who knows all the pups? Maybe even Alfred??
selise @ 121
Further along, will there be any mention of DK’s Impeachment applause during the debate, by the MSM?
I want to see the tape of whatever happened in SJC today. To figure out exactly what it was that Leahy did to sidestep the Title II immunity stuff.
Good night.

I shall bid a fond adieu! Aloha Oe!!!
‘Nite, all. Dream sweetly.
Who’s left?
I’m watching a replay of the Dem candidate debate, and I noticed a subtle anti-Hilary thing: Periodically, one of the guys will agree with one of the other guys– but never(?) with Hillary. Kind of a nice way to put her down?

Maybe just you & me? I always knew my heart was in Hawaii, now I know my body clock is, too.

1,660 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND
selise @ 134
I saw it, and here’s what I remember. They spent all day debating Title I, proposing amendments, then debating and voting on amendments, and Leahy finally scheduled a vote just on Title I as amended, and that passed. They started debate on Title II, and Feingold immediately offered an amendment about retroactive immunity (I can’t remember the wording, or whether it was for [unlikely] or against). Then Leahy, seeing that there was going to be a long debate, moved to offer just Title I as the whole bill, and move it to the floor without waiting on Title II, and that motion passed. I think they do plan to debate Title II, but when, or in what form it will get to the floor, who knows. But right now, Title I is the WHOLE BILL. I.e., no retroactive immunity. See Greenwald’s post today, Updates X and XI.
But its late, even here in Honolulu, and I may be misremembering. I think Christy will explain it all tomorrow morning.
Bob in HI

I keep wondering if the Democrats might try to ‘demonize’ (that is, have commercials and press releases that accurately portray) “a private, secretive group that has planned to pack the courts wht right wing judges, to limit your right to sue, to consistently strip unions of their rights, and consistently had the Administration dictatorial powers” i.e. the Federalist Society.
Just a litany of how their positions are at odds with the general public might be a start.
1,660 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND..
Firepup Freedom Fighters:
The dumbest son of the largest family in America’s oligarchy has jest accomplished what 75 years of well heeled and appointed power weilders could not and that is mainstream fascism into the common politic and insitutionalize it in the law, courts and prescedent. Even if the FISA Bill passes without telecom immunity, it will take hundreds of prosecutions including prosecutions for treason relating to the Valery Wilson affair and war crimes prosecutions both here and in the Hague in order to even begin to cleanse the corruption of tyranny from our politics and institutions. And I’m afraid we’ve passed the point where that is possible…I’m afraid the dumb bastard actually succeeded in killin’ democracy in America.
KEEP THE FAITH, THERE’S LOTSA FIGHTIN’ LEFT TA DO!!
NorskeFlamethrower @ 138
And the only candidate on last nights debate who would stop the Killin’is Kucinich.
Good morning, pups. Mr. Krugman has a column in the Times today where he says Barack Obama’s Social Security mistake was exactly what you’d expect from a candidate who promises to transcend partisanship in an age when that’s neither possible nor desirable.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
In addition to that Bobo and somebody named Ben Schott have put together something so profoundly silly, trivial and stupid that words fail me. You can find it here:

Good mroning Marion. The Bobo piece was not without promise, and has it’s pleasures (under the “Logic” column, F. Thompson’s is ‘unused’).
This is the sort of stuff that the National Lampoon would have been doing in 1977.

It made me feel like feeding Wolf Blitzer to the sharks.
Wolf was funny with his yes or no answers. He certainly didn’t pass the diplomatic test. Obama will get criticized for his view on driver licenses for undocumented immigrants but I’m glad that he pointed out to Wolf that it’s a wedge issue.

Why? I ask.
My parents have decided I have post nasal drip.

I’m gonna have it all weekend.
Who is the singer in yesterday’s youtube, doing “I can’t stand the rain”. It’s not Ann peebles…I really want to know???
Good morning, all…it’s in the 30s in Upstate New York. We have a little snow on the ground this morning after a lot of rain last night.
Everyone ready for another day of rock and roll?
I know I’m late to this thread, computer down last night but I guess you guys are gonna get a kick out of this;
about 20 years or so agoI was at a small party that was for grace’s birthday
well, she has a brother
the two were impossible to tell apart, her brother flirted with me all night, took my number, called for a while insisting it was just for friendship not sex…never took him up on meeting again
here’s the funny part, grace was with guys and spent very little time with any women at all, it seemed to me like though she wanted to have a masculine appearance she didn’t give the women at the party any play
she was a sweetheart by the way
never saw either one of them again

I am sure Loosehead Prop will soon be explaining it, but I admit to being impatient to know if they are sameold sameold, or show a glimmer of hope for the rule of law.

New thread…
I just have to right a wrong here. I’ll admit upfront that I was never really a fan of Grace back in the 80s, and I am sure that this song is entertaining for her fans, but it is a cover of another band, and a pretty poor cover at that.
This song was originally written and performed by an obscure band called Flash and the Pan. They had a minor hit, “Hey St. Peter”, that shows up a lot in retro 80s collections. Their rendition is a much more minimalist, somber, serious and heartfelt one than this. (yes I am a big fan of FATP). I think everyone would appreciate hearing the original, IMHO. Just want to give credit where it is due.
