Okay, let me be the first to say that perhaps Governor Perdue was on to something with that whole “Pray for Rain” thing, because it’s finally raining here. Sweet, beautiful rain.
I’m going to sleep like a baby tonight.
So, this is my favorite song about rain.
What’s yours?

I grew up in Oregon. We had no songs about the rain. As far as we knew, there was no life without rain- to sing about it would be like singing about earth.
Damn, why don’t I have more David Ruffin in my life? He’s tearing this song up.

i love this Stan Rogers song Field Behind the Plow, the lyrics reference rain, “… and it figures that the rain would take its own sweet time, you can see it come for miles …” (course an ol farmgrrrlll would like a song like this)

TRex,
OT a bit. Missed last night but read today’s comments and went back and listened to your voice. You must get your “peeps” down in Athens to get you a wider audience. Love your intellect/voice here but your vocal delivery gave me the shivers. What a talent.

okay, howzabout a Rain Dance?
The most fun about roller skating was speed. If you learned to do a crossover step- you could continuously accelerate- until your velocity caused you to lose contact with earth and crash into the rail with the centrifugal force of the planet Jupiter.
i used to roller skate, speed skating, back in HS
I just totally busted myself as a Pern geek.

Well, she’s a pacer. She cleared the podium and chairs so she could wander as she talked…
Oh, you mean stuff we haven’t heard about here?
Well, she has issued a $50,000 and then a $100,000 challenge to anyone in her audience who can tell her when a civilization has begun to torture its own, and survived.
Audience members quickly came up with England, and some cases during the Civil War here…
She’s thinking about those.
And she adores FDL!
TRex, this has been one of the best music threads evah.

Isn’t he wonderful. I went to see a musical, something to which I would normally have to be dragged, kicking, screaming and digging my nails into the sidewalk but I was assured that I’d like it. It was called Tomfoolery and it featured many of Lehrer’s songs. I laughed long and loud and wanted to go again. He’s brilliant.

You know, I was scooping the cat-box earlier tonight and thinking, “What if I get a boyfriend and all I want to do is lay around in an oversexed daze and think about cute fluffy bunnies? Will I lose my mojo? Can I snark as keenly if I’m not bristling with unmet emotional and physical needs?”
This concerns me.
TRex @ 171
TRex–he was big in the early 60s, especially w/ the Mort Sahl cerebral set. I think he was a professor at MIT; performed his stuff live once or twice & then decided to ‘leave the room on an up note’ cuz he couldn’t top himself & went back to academia.

Heh. But she was young and full of energy. Lessa at my age: “Lessee, what did i come into the kitchen for? (bangs on temple to see if she can jar a thought loose) i thought of it when i was out by that critter, um, the, um, watchwher. (trudges out to watchwher’s den) oh, yeah! the poor fuzzums needs more watchwher kibbles. um, let me write it on this scrap of paper … (trudges back to kitchen), fuckwher! i forgot the bowl.”
TRex @ 184
No, no, no. You’ll be happy and more peaceful, but your snark will be more sharply focused and honed. There’ll always be plenty of ignorance and mendacity to skewer. Do not deny yourself the pleasure of someone’s company in an attempt to keep your edge.
Nothing to do with rain but a great question (song) to end with … what if the Beatles were Irish?

TRex,
You are so full of life that whether you are “with friend” or not is not germane to who you “now” are. I have the idea that your creativity is so fundamentally ingrained in your life that a new “interest” would only be a bonus.
If Big Pharma could bottle a pill to spawn a version of your talent, the Dow would spike and there would an index of call options in your name.

Bomb Parts Clear Air Security in Tests
GAO Report Puts TSA on the Defensive
By Spencer S. Hsu
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, November 15, 2007; Page A01
Undercover investigators carried all the bomb components needed to cause “severe damage” to airliners and passengers through U.S. airport screening checkpoints several times this year, despite security measures adopted in August 2006 to stop such explosive devices, according to a new government report.
Agents were able to smuggle aboard a detonator, liquid explosives and liquid incendiary components costing less than $150, even though screening officers in most cases appeared to follow proper procedures and use appropriate screening technology, according to an unclassified version of a report by the Government Accountability Office, Congress’s audit arm.

a sweet gentle song, Iz singing Over the Rainbow
TRex @ 184
The short answer is “NO”.
Here’s a longer one: You’ll still be the king of snark, oversexed bunnies notwithstanding. Just like your doubts about your singing has no merit in this lifetime. TRex, you sing beautifully. And snark? The uncontested lifetime king. Crown is in the mail, dear.

i think we have just found out larry flynt’s next target.
Rain songs are just about the best.
“Laughter in the Rain” (YouTube)
Wish I could find Olu Dara, “Rain Shower” stream.
My favorite: probably the Brook Benton “Rainy Night in Georgia.”
My guess is J. Thomas Schieffer, U.S. Ambassador to Japan is about to retire. That’s the job Hastert wants. Assuming he doesn’t face any legal problems like so many of his gooper companions, of course.
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 220
And, like a fine red wine, she has only got better with age. Well, I hear the Sandman calling my name … great music post. ‘night.
Oh, Suzanne, you may be right. I forgot about Flynt’s promise/threat.
*rubs hands with glee*
Have I mentioned how much I like politics?
TheOtherWA @ 226

Yeah, but weren’t there *rumors* about Hastert and his chief of staff? They live together or something? And when Hastert’s wife is in DC to visit, she stays at a hotel, while and Denny and his staffer are at home? Hmmm?
We’ll know soon enough. :D
Nite, Suzanne! Sweet dreams. Think I’ll be outta here soon too.
My favourite song about rain is TSOL ‘Wash Away’. Thanks T-rex
It’s 2:40 a.m. here and it’s raining.
Irma Thomas – “It’s raining”
or
The Dramatics – “In the rain”
or
Ann Peebles – “I can’t stand the rain”
you decide…
CTuttle @ 19
I have the original Canadian release on vinyl . . . I LOVE his first album, and that song goes down in history as one of the folkie’s and camp jams best evah!!!
Lord he’s had his issues in the past 5 years with brain tumors and such.
But he’s out there, and sanging . . . there’s only a few who can sit with him in terms of music written, sung, and the success it had commercially and amongst the masses.
Mr. Zimmerman, perhaps.
Mr. Guthrie (sans success commercially)
I’m kinda done . . . Paul Simon maybe, but too pop for this catagory.
And I think both Gordie an Bobby blow Paulie away . . . . .
Gordon Lightfoot. A hoss for the ages. One of the best.
Rain?
Um . . . . Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again (pop, NO clue was it Sir Douglas aka Doug Sahm N Augie Myers?)?
Let It Rain . . . Clapton n them other folks . .
Beatles did Rain . . . ehhh . . .
Two songs get to me mournful to this day, both were hot on pop charts in their time . . and TRex missed my second one bad . . . missed it COMPLETELY!!! *G*
1) I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, forgot who popularized it after Hank Williams did it long ago . . . soul singer nailed it in the 60’s though, and I still get shivers from it . . . “Did you hear, the sound, of the whipperwhill. . ” bust me out bawlin quick, every time
2) Rainy Night In Georgia, Brook Benton’s version. Nothin like it, anywhere, to this day. Brook’s the man. Always was. This is HIS song. No one else’s . . . no diss Gladys . . . even Aretha covered it. It’s still Brooks . . *G*
I got a ton of rainy kinda songs in americana, country and bluegrass and folk, but not with the title of RAIN . . . . dead cells no doubt, I’m sure they is out there . . .

I LOVE the Pogues. How someone who clearly drinks way too much and joyfully cultivates his bad teeth can produce a great big warm puddle of affection from me is a mystery. But that’s the way it is and anyone who doesn’t like it can Pogue Mahone!

Nice to hear some Pogue and Cash fans here. BTW Sal Valentino is still out there playin’ some great stuff in small coffeehouses in Sacramento area. Gonna have a new album out soon, I’ve heard. Did Leila and the Snakes (Siouxsie Sioux before Siouxie existed) ever actually do an album?
There are tons of very talented folks out there if you bother to cut through the commercial radio crapola. Suggest that you find a good College radio station and find some good programs. Usually there are a few DJ’s that break out of the standard vein. I like diversity so I always tune into KDVS in Davis, which b’casts on the web as well. They have some Americana and other speciality programs that are simply wicked. Good Bay Area connection, too. They were the place that actually supplied DJ’s for many of the Sacramento udeground stations like “Earth Radio” and “KZAP” back in the early 1970’s.
They are also very progressive B’casting Pacifica Radio News and Amy Goodman…as well as some really good locally produced Science and interview programs.
Good mroning, 47 and cloudy with some real rain last nite in a dessicated Blue Ridge GA.

Hey, denizens of the FDL Night Owl Cafe-
Great posts this eve/morn. I just finished reading you all after a long, long day of work.
Here’s a contribution to the rain music before I hit the hay-great version of Pennies From Heaven by Louis Armstrong:
Pennies From Heaven
‘Night all.
Thnx selise. I don’t suppose any of y’all remember Lena Horne’s “Stormy Weather” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUd8V7G8t0c

An entire post about GA rain. Atlanta Hartsfield Airport received .04 of an inch. What excitement. I live in Roswell, and I slept through the showers but the wind has already dried the streets so I doubt that we received more than .25 of an inch. Next time I hope that Sunny asks for more rain.

MR. Bill @ 265
You mean back when we started electing Barney Frank?
It’s funny how people stand on his shoulders and sh*t all over him.
I feel like the only only voice on FDL to say this, but Thank you, Barney.
Thank you, Barney Frank, for being a wonderful representative from our district and for working for decades to end discrimination.
JPL @ 266
JPL, thanks for the link to the Lawrenceville Weather Blog. His airing of the theory that we are 1/3 thru a 20 year drought period is chilling.
Boston1775 @ 268
i think people are just disappointed (and surprised) that he threw transgendered folks under the bus on the enda legislation.
Boston1775 @ 268
Is this about the flak Frank took for not getting Trans protections into the GLB law?
selise @ 270
selise, This is a political blog. It means that there is some expectation that people will understand how politics works.
It took thirty five years to get this version of ENDA passed by the House.
The lack of gratitude for Barney Frank and his work will stay with me for a long time.
MR. Bill @ 271
Ya, Bill. Sorry for not saying hi and telling you how much I appreciated the video. I was watching it, getting coffee and kinda dancing in the dark kitchen and then wham……..
got mad all over again.
I love Barney Frank.
Boston1775 @ 272
Hopefully, when we get a more progressive congress we can get the Trans protections in ENDA. I keep thinking ‘the best must not be the enemy of the good’.
And, Re Barney Frank (and hell, Al Gore for that matter): “The prophet is without honor in his own country.”
hmm… just after i get done getting pissed off (again) at obama – he does some very good stuff:
supports drivers licences for undocumented residents.
and his technology and inovation proposals (i haven’t read them yet, but lessig gives them the thumbs up) (pdf)
good for obama.
MR. Bill @ 275
Thanks for that, Bill.
Off to work.
‘the best must not be the enemy of the good.’
Boston1775 @ 272
not really – i come here, not because i understand how politics works, but (at least partly) because i want to learn.
will you break this down for me? you don’t think enda with transgendered would have passed the house?
Mr. Bill, Can’t remember who linked us to the blog but wasn’t me. The GA water situation is pretty scary and it would be nice to have a gov stand on the statehouse steps and talk about how we got here and how we can plan for the future. The city of Roswell is talking about drilling a well.
MR. Bill @ 274
i won’t object if you call me stupid… but how is this edna bill (with trans protections pulled) a good thing? how does it help move things forward?
i really just don’t get it.
selise @ 276
I understand people’s frustration with the candidates. None are perfect. All of the Democrats are probably better than any of the republicans (including R. Paul, if only RuPaul were running instead). I understand the frustration with the Democratic Leadership.
But this is politics. You push and push and keep pushing. We are seeing the end of a decades long push against the left, where the Right controlled all three branches of the government. It hasn’t worked. It’s the Left’s turn, unless we fall to squabbling again.
I’m not a Hillary fan, but she would be a better president than any of the Repubs. And Ralph Nader is delusional when he says that the parties aren’t different. WE NEED TO KEEP PUSHING.
And Chopin’s Raindrop Prelude, anyone?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ot9INo7Zvw
selise @ 278
That’s exactly what I think, selise.
Take care.
selise @ 280
WEll, selfishly, as a gay guy, it means I don’t get fired.
And we can keep the heat on the congress to add Trans protections.
My favorite rain song is Chanchan from the movie Water. Here it us:
Good Morning!
JPL @ 279
I just don’t see it from these jokers. They believe that anything that makes a buck is God’s will. Atlanta sits on a pine upland, that gets on the order of 40″ of rain a year, no aquifer, tiny rivers like the Chattahoochee and Tallapoosa. The issue of sprawl and bad commutes, and pollution and habitat destruction will not be dealt with and this water issue are going to be played “you want to starve people for water and give it to mussels” or oysters…
I guess Waccamaw gave us the water link:
http://www.atlantawatershortage.com/ .
Hmmm, embeds don’t work?
Chanchan link from the movie Water
MR. Bill @ 281
i thought pushing was criticising them when the fuck up and praising them when they do something i like. i’m not going to refrain from what i think is justifiable criticism because they’ve also done a lot of good. i want transparency and accountability – but that doesn’t mean i expect perfection.
Good morning, pups. It’s TOMC and Cohen in the Times today. TOMC says the challenge for Hillary Clinton in today’s debate will be to prove that she can talk the straight talk. She says it’s a tricky business. Mr. Cohen says Barack Obama, in many ways, is where the world is going. He embodies interconnectedness where the Bush administration has projected separateness.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
Coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got pumpkin muffins with pecans that just came out of the oven. Have a good almost-Friday. Will we all be watching the debate and commenting here later?
selise @ 288
Then we actually agree. I gotta go work now.
Y’all keep pushing.
Boston1775 @ 282
more questions then (i’m not trying to challenge you, i’m trying to understand).
1) who do you think might have refrained from voting for it if edna includes the transgendered?
2) wouldn’t it be a good thing to know who they are – so we would know who to lobby (or primary)?
3) is getting a flawed edna passed in the house more important than discovering who our real supporters are – and are not?
4) doesn’t the damage that’s been done to the collalition also count as a bad thing?
Thanks Marion for the goodies and the info.
Good morning from the BlueState, who is writing from the East Coast about something on the West
that concern both and everyone in between as well above and beyond, as are our pup friends in Alaska and Hawaii.
Here with a chance for Pups to take action on behalf of an Iraq Vet and mandatory sentences all at once.
The Vet is Sargent Brinkley (that’s his name, not his rank).
His story was most recently told @ Talkleft.
http://www.talkleft.com/story/2007/11/11/115859/96
and earlier in a Daily Kos Diary that I’ll provide in a jiff.
His story, as told by Jerrilyn:
“West Point graduate who is currently facing twenty-odd years in prison for robbing a Walgreens under California’s minimum sentencing laws. He used a gun (unloaded) and robbed the drugstores of only Percocet – no money, harming nobody.
Here’s the kicker — he was addicted to the opiates after smashing his hip while serving abroad in the Army — the military medical system kept misdiagnosing him, and feeding him more of the painkillers. Add in some serious PTSD (he guarded mass graves in Bosnia from desecration at one point) and he spiraled down.
Sargent turned himself in, has been in a rehab program in county jail for over a year and a half while he awaits sentencing, and by all accounts is doing well. The Santa Clara DA wants to chuck the book at him, and he’ll be gone.
He has a court date tomorrow
His supporters, Jerrilyn, and me, concerned citizen who tries to write a letter or make a call every day ask you to make Sarge the topic of your letter today.
The addresses and templates are on:
http://supportsarge.org
Here’s their statement:
“Sargent’s legal team has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges. Defense lawyer Chuck Smith has offered a deal to the prosecution, asking them to let a judge decide Sargent’s sentence, with a maximum possible sentence of six years of prison time and a minimum of medical treatment and supervised probation. The office of the District Attorney has rejected this offer. Please help by writing to the DA in charge and asking her to reconsider this offer, and put Sargent’s sentencing in the hands of a judge. “
MR. Bill @ 283
no, it doesn’t protect you – because this edna bill will never be law. it’s part of the long process to get the federal protections you and the transgendered deserve. and quite frankly, at this time, the transgendered need the protections more than anyone else.
but again – this wasn’t about making law – it was about continuing the long push to get good law.
portia.vz @ 284
That was a happy video!
thanks mr. bill and boston… i appreciate the conversation.

Good Morning Firepups!
It’s overcast and mild this morning, nearly 60°, in central Jersey. We’re going to get more rain today as a strong cold front pushes through, and the temperture will fall down into the forties by this afternoon. We may get thunder as the storms come through.
There’s a fresh pot of coffee, hot water for tea drinkers, and a big bag of bagels on the counter, along with cream cheese, butter, and jam. Help yourselves.

I’m from Texas and have admired Barney Frank since he first went to Congress. I always thought he was the best debator in Congress.
For everyone’s info, I’m watcing FoxNews. No mention (that I’ve seen) of the Judith/Kerik/Giulanni/Murdoch lawsuit. Zippo.
Elliott – do you (or anyone else) by any chance have a pc? i’m looking for help in troubleshooting c-span feeds. thx!
I agree about Barney Frank. He is an excellent speaker. Whenever he’s on Bill Maher, he’s outstanding. One speech he gave on Maher was so passionate that it could make you cry.
pma @ 308
certainly one of the best (i don’t know them all well enough to judge). really, really smart – and knows his house parlimentary procedures cold.
selise @ 310
I do but don’t know how much I can help, will try tho
Elliott @ 307
MR. Bill and JPL.
selise @ 312
On most topics, when I don’t feel any of the Democrats have stated the case strongly enough, I think, “Ah, here comes Barney Frank.”
Everyone happy with the war funding bill?
Raining here in NoVa. Would gladly send some to Georgia if I could.
Elliott @ 313
do you have realplayer installed and do you / can you stream realplayer webcasts like c-span’s? if the answer to these questions is “yes”, then you could be a BIG help – it shouldn’t take more than 10-15 minutes.
and we can do it here in late late nite epu land so as not to bother a lot of fire pups.
It’s raining in Georgia, too. How much do they need to make a difference?
solai @ 316
FUCK NO!!
but, my participation in that conversation will have to wait until after the c-span troubleshooting.
p.s. anyone else willing to participate in the c-span feed trouble shooting (mac or pc – just need realplayer and the ability to stream webcasts) would be greatfully appreciated.
selise @ 318
yes I stream real player, I’ll see if I can help!
selise @ 320
I’m off to get ready for work. I’ll look for your reasoning later. Will it be here or in the first morning thread?
Elliott @ 322
great!!
hang in there, i’m writing up the tests right now… just give me a minute or two to post them here….
Let It Rain. Derek & The Dominoes.
Christy’s upstairs!
here’s why the funding bill is ok;
the president will veto it
congress MUST take a stand and their stand has to be resonalbe to all facets of the political spectrum
when the president vetoes the bill congress MUST come back with a MORE restrictive bill and say “the president refuses to support the tropps and refuses to provide a plan for success, he insists on endless war America will NOT stand for a president that doesn’t follow THE PEOPLES WILL.
we are therefore forced into sending him a more contraining bill so that he understands he WILL do the bidding of the American people
or he will be fired”
IF they follow THAT strategy then this funding bill is perfect
selise @ 324
ok selise
here goes!
background – c-span is scheduled to provide delayed video coverage of the SJC mark up meeting today on FISA legislation. if we want to follow along live, i think our only option is to use the room audio feed from c-span.
last week i spent a bunch of time on the phone with c-span while they tried to track down the problem. this week it’s worse – i can’t even get the high pitched tone feed that is supposed to be indicative of the lines working when no hearing is currently underway.
but – the audio feeds are working localing at the c-span offices….
here’s what i need you to do… test each of the following c-span realplayer feeds, and tell me if you an connect and if you get a good feed (or high pitched tone for the room feed).
1) c-span tv stand alone
2) c-span tv embed
3) c-span radio stand alone
… more coming in the next comment. here’s the first three to get you started while i type up the rest.

selise, no problem with the first three, get good feed from radio band, no high pitched sounds
#4 times out
#5 works
Elliott @ 333
me too.
your answer to question #6 is going be key.
so, the defense funding bill was passed, not real happy with it but there is hope in the bill, here’s what I want to happen, it won’t, but here’s what I would like to see;
the president will veto it, this we already know is going to happen, congress knows it too so I hope they have a plan and I hope their plan is as follows
congress MUST take a stand and their stand has to be resonalbe to all facets of the political spectrum
when the president vetoes the bill congress MUST come back with a MORE restrictive bill and say “the president refuses to support the tropps and refuses to provide a plan for success, he insists on endless war America will NOT stand for a president that doesn’t follow THE PEOPLES WILL.

#6
#7
both time out for me
Elliott @ 337
but if they aren’t broadcastin anything yet does that make a difference for the 6 & 7?
Elliott @ 338
you should get a high pitched tone if the feed is working.
that coupled with the time out you got on #4 – is EXACTLY the problem i’ve having also (and it’s new to me this week).
this has been very helpful, when you are done i will call back with your system info and maybe there is a chance it will get fixed by 10am.
but, i’m not counting on it…. still it’s possible and i will do my best to get them the info asap today and push hard for a resolution.

Well, the Dean does admit that it is a difficult question for Republicans to raise….mainly because it is incomprehensible.
Is he suggesting, perhaps, that it be Unconstitutional for a wife to follow her husband into the White House? Oooh! He can argue “the Framers never CONCEIVED that a wife of a former President would become President!”

yep – i just picked the first on on the list to test.
well, i think you are good to go for this morning’s hearing. i hope someone who can get the feed will rip the audio for me if i can’t get my feed up and running before 10.
many thanks for your help! it was a great help!
Hi selise..
The dirksen 226 tries to open but automatically pauses in quicktime. I don’t hear anything.
Eureka Springs @ 350
try opening it in realplayer
selise @ 351
any luck?
selise @ 352
I’ve distracted him just a minute
selise, did you see nolo’s note
http://www.firedoglake.com/200…..nt-1097703
selise, very sorry I got tied up elsewhere
No.. dirksen is still not working… says live feed paused when I try to initiate it.
Elliott @ 354
nolo’s wrong. that link only works for hearings – not business meeting – unless the sjc has changed it’s policies since last thursday – the last time i talked to them about this.
please pass the word on to everyone else – i’m still trying to get it working on my end.
Eureka Springs @ 355
paused or no connection? do you get an error msg?
maybe only pcs can access the feed? that doesn’t sound right.
selise @ 356
ok
I’m sorry. I tried to help and may only make things worse… my connection speed is slow this a.m. and I’m not very good at this.. I usually just click on a link and my computer decides if it needs qt or rp.. I don’t know how to manually override that sort of thing.
so sorry
hope it hasn’t started still getting high pitch
Elliott @ 360
please keep me updated here… i am on the phone with c-span now.
… let me know if anything changes from your current status of high pitched tone. thx.
selise @ 361
OK!
Eureka Springs @ 359
thanks for trying.
Elliott @ 362
awesome!!!
can you record?

I can’t, never did that before and can’t risk crashing right now, sorry :(
Elliott @ 365
no problem. understood.
still just the tone?
selise
has the hearing actually started?
yes tone
Elliott @ 368
i don’t know… and i have now way to know…. :(
when i talked with the tech person a few minutes ago, it sounded like there was a problem and they were having trouble figuring out what to do. but, i’m not sure. he said he’d call me right back.
selise @ 370
pardon my tinfoil hat but “how conveeenient”
