Yesterday was arch-blogger Steve Gilliard’s forty-third birthday. Unfortunately, he’s no longer on the planet, but somewhere his spirit must be having one heck of a laugh over the ginormous birthday prezzies he’s received, courtesy of Bernie Kerik, Judith Regan and Rudy Giuliani.
Let’s start with Ms. Regan, shall we?
Judith Regan, the former book publisher, says in a lawsuit filed today protesting her dismissal by the News Corporation, the media conglomerate, that a senior executive there encouraged her to lie to federal investigators about her past affair with Bernard B. Kerik after he had been nominated to become homeland security secretary in late 2004.
Wham! Ah, but it gets better:
Ms. Regan had an affair with Mr. Kerik, who is married, beginning in the spring of 2001, when her imprint, ReganBooks, began work on his memoir, “The Lost Son.” In December 2004, after the relationship had ended and shortly after Mr. Kerik’s homeland security nomination fell apart, newspapers reported that the two had carried on the affair at an apartment near ground zero that had been donated as a haven for rescue and recovery workers.
Mr. Kerik, who said he had withdrawn his nomination because of problems with his hiring of a nanny, was indicted last week on federal tax fraud and other charges.
Ah, yes, Mr. Kerik. Such a charming, upstanding guy.
It’s so funny to see Rudy scrambling to distance himself from Bernie, when he was once so tight with the guy he named a jail after him:
First, Giuliani made Kerik – who used to drive him around on weekends – correction commissioner in New York, after Kerik had run one jail in his life, in Passaic County. Then Giuliani made him police commissioner, though Kerik had just a total of eight years on the books as a cop.
So there was Bernie Kerik in charge of the NYPD when the planes hit on Sept. 11, and suddenly he was perceived to be almost as brave and noble as his boss just by standing there next to him. Suddenly, there was this idea that the two of them had somehow looked terrorism in the eye and stared it down, when neither one of them did anything of the kind. All they did was help pick up the pieces along with everybody else.
Three months later, The Tombs became the “Bernard B. Kerik Complex.” The first city jail ever to be turned into a shrine. For Bernie Kerik. Who now gets indicted for conspiracy and mail fraud and wire fraud and filing false tax returns and making false statements to the government and putting phony information on a loan application. Tammany Hall produced cops like this.
Which of course brings us back to Rudy:
t is worth noting that these indictments run through Kerik’s career working alongside the current front-runner for the Republican nomination for President like a broken-field back in football. Run from the time when Kerik was Giuliani’s correction commissioner, through his time as police commissioner, through the time when Kerik went into business with Giuliani in his security firm, Giuliani Partners.
The government’s book on Kerik, the one U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia officially threw at him the other day, goes right through the time when Giuliani picked up the phone and called President Bush and did everything but nominate Kerik as secretary of Homeland Security all by himself.
When Giuliani is questioned about all that now, he sounds so weak you can imagine him blowing away in a strong wind, making it sound as if everything he missed on Kerik was some slight “vetting” problem.
If Giuliani couldn’t see whom he had riding in the car with him, backseat or front seat, then what does he see when he looks around at the people closest to him?
Corrupt gunsels? Or is that just when he looks in the mirror?
That sound you hear is Giuliani’s campaign circling the drain.
Oh, and because Gilly the Mets fan would insist: Bleep the bleepin’ Yankees!

hello?
zed
happy birthday!
PW!
Gilly!
Nice, PW!
BREAKING:
Nancy Grace hospitalized with
bileblood clots.I worry about the Teflon factor.
I would have thought Rude-y would have disappeared by now, but he’s still here!
Shorter Rudy: “Bernie was my lapdog, but now he’s got rabies, so I’m gonna have to put him down.”
or even Shorter Rudy: “Bernie who?”
I think the R’s should nominate Ghouliani… that would be an interesting campaign.
He is such scumbag. It’s personal with me. I was unlawfully arrested and spent a night in the tombs, and of course the “case” was tossed out. SOB
In tribute to Gilly… FTFY! And as a die-hard BoSox Fan, unlike Ghouliani… ;-)
SanderO @ 9
If it’s Rude E vs Hillary, I may have to leave the country till it’s over. Ugh. The nastiness will be unprecedented.
FUCK THE FUCKING YANKEES!!!
Miss ya, dood… quite a bit.
Happy Birthday Gilly!
Also, I find it hard to believe that Ghouliani wasn’t involved or aware of all that Kerik corruption stuff…why else would he keep giving Kerik all of those “guilt gifts”?..It’s possible that we will eventually hear the sound of a second shoe falling…or not.
BobbyG @ 11
it’s hard to stomach the idea that after all we’ve been through with George W. Bush, the best we can come up for candidates in the next election would be Hillary Clinton vs Rudy Giuliani
oh, and Happy Birthday!
Peace to Steve. And much regret.
Edwards vs Huckabee
LS @ 17
Paul vs. Kucinich
Seems like Rudy has the Repub “Culture of Corruption” mantle going for him already. Sooner or later the neonutzies have to realize he’s not the winner they were praying for as they gave up the expectation of having a candidate who stood for their social values in exchange for keeping their pants dry.
BobbyG @ 6
I had hopes for Nancy Grace back when she got her first great promotion at CNN. But then the biggest court case of the decade hit (Libby), and nary a peep out of Grace about it. Oh, I see. Law and courts are only fun if they involve a teenage blonde. Well, heck, she could at least have gone to the Libby trials to cover Jane Hamsher. There actually was news happening, y’know. (sigh).
I think I made a feeble attempt about that time to see if Gretta Van Sustern was doing anything about the Libby trial, but I couldn’t find anything. Now, maybe if Judy Miller had been a blonde teenager?
Nevertheless, I hope for Grace’s swift recovery.

Lie Down With Dogs, Get Up With Fleas, Mange, Rabies, Uh…Canine Chlamydia…
Group News
Mad Dogs @ 8
Uh oh, here comes Judy with the stapler…
OT, but if Selise is around, or if someone could let her know that the file she sent me seems to work pretty well. I have a few things to check out yet, but so far so good. I’m thinking I’m going to check and see that the 1 is in the field for long distance calls, or if anyone has any advise on how to put the 1s in for all long distance in the group, if you could share how to do it, I’m pretty sure it’s fairly simple, but I’ve had trouble with it before, so I’m sure no expert.
It will be interesting to see if the cable news picks up this story. It may have gained too much attention via the NYT for them to ignore it. They would love to ignore it – no question about that.
Somehow, I think Steve would have liked this site:
Wikileaks
OT..Feeling discouraged..beaten down?
C&L has a nice video with Ava Lowery

Sofistic @ 25
The robots in Iraq! news to me
Diane @ 19
On second thought, as brazen as they are, (and in consideration of the fact that few citizens read anything – let alone the NYT), I believe they will still try to keep a lid on this. Pat Robertson has prematurely sh*t his wad on Rudy. They will try like hell to tamp this down.
bobschacht @ 20
I think her specialty is advocating for victims of violent crimes. If there are no cameras allowed in the courtroom, it seems CourtTV will only cover it anyway if it’s a celeb.
I used to like Nancy, but she’s gone the way of Walter Winchell.
Curious to see how this plays with Brit & the Boys as allegations continue to drip, drip, drip.
Steve would approve:
War protesters arrested at Wash. port
Dozens Arrested in Protests Against Iraq War Shipments Bound for Wash. State Army Base
RACHEL LA CORTE
AP News
Police used pepper spray on a crowd of about 150 demonstrators as they tried to block shipments of military gear from Iraq, but officials managed to move out several loads to a nearby Army base through a side entrance.
Police arrested 43 people Tuesday night at the Port of Olympia in the state capital during the second week of demonstrations against the shipments, which arrived at the port after an Army Stryker brigade based at Fort Lewis returned from the war.

Nancy Grace (the teevee show) has never been anything more than a right-wing propaganda vehicle. It serves to foster and promote a police state mentality.
I don’t see Judy settling, because she will be gagged forever from discussing anything and everything relating to the subjects of the lawsuit, and in her field, that would be pretty much anything and everything…she’d be really rich, but really paralyzed socially and professionally…I dunno…I think she actually intends to take these people down, and still have her freedom.
Ann in AZ @ 23
Good fax software (I refuse to mention names) has a field where it is simply a check-box, and it puts the 1 in, and any other special head-end coding. If yours doesn’t you need new software.
Ann in AZ @ 23
great!
there’s no “1″ for long distance though – i don’t use it on my phone… but if it’s needed for online faxing, i’ll make an update and put them in (if some one else hasn’t already).
Another thought…if Judy settles, it will look like a payoff to cover-up for Rudy. If she doesn’t settle, it will probably expose a cover-up for Rudy.
I think Rudy is toast either way.
I miss Steve, very much. Things happen and I wonder what he would have had to say about them. I miss Molly Ivins, Hunter Thompson, and Kurt Vonnegut in the same way.
One thought, though I miss all the big names, the most memorable quote on 911 came from Susan Sontag, whom, I believe, is still alive.
“Whatever they were, the men who attacked the World Trade center were not cowards.”
Might not be the exact quote, but King George should have listened to her very carefully.
Hippo Birdies, Gilly!
I came around too late to get to know you, but now that I’m here, I miss your insightful comments.

“Cookie’s ” problems continue:
But Spencer Ackerman just interviewed Krongard’s brother, “Buzzy” Krongard, who told Spencer that he definitely did tell his brother all about it. Only a few weeks ago apparently.

There is also Brisingamen’s “oathtaker” spell…a lot has happened…
cynic @ 38
Sorry cynic, but Sontag — like Gilly — is dead: Dec 28, 2004.
LS @ 48
Geez LS I’d forgotten about that, when did Brisingamen do that, do you remember?
demi @ 46
If this were Bush, it would be handled by reminding everyone about how pious he is. Just ignore that there’s little evidence to support that position. I wonder if a similar strategy would work here?

The “Outcasting/Oathbreaker” spell was done during the Solar Eclipse/New Moon on September 11, 2007.
It has been repeated by myself and others during each New Moon since then –10/11 and 11/9. (Repeating a spell three times is said to give it extra power.)
McConnell: “I’ll resign if intel is ‘Cherry-Picked’!” But, I’ll hafta kill ya first…
National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell said Tuesday he would resign if administration officials mischaracterized or “cherry-picked” intelligence to support their own political agenda.
“If it were cherry-picked in an inappropriate way, then for me, that’s a professional obligation to object, and I would submit my resignation,” McConnell told reporters.
Bush administration officials have been accused of selectively releasing intelligence that supported the case for an invasion of Iraq prior to the war.
McConnell also said a new national intelligence estimate on Iran should be complete in about a month, but its key findings will not be released publicly. He says doing so could alert Iran to its intelligence vulnerabilities.
-snip-
“Our objective is to present the clinical evidence and let it stand on its own merits,” he said. “And then the second part is we’ll provide our assessment. That is what we are wrestling through now.”
McConnell said the intelligence community learned from its flawed 2002 national intelligence estimate about Iraq’s alleged weapons of mass destruction, and is applying new discipline in its creation of the Iran NIE.
“When I go back and look at it, I think we the community, the nation and the nation’s leadership probably would have been better served if we had been insistent, absolutely insistent upon a higher level of integrity with regard to what does the clinical evidence say, long before we get to what we think about it,” he said.
“We are a much better community analytically. We learned those lessons of October 2002 very, very well. And the quality of the output is much better in my view,” he said.
McConnell also said he would attempt to prosecute anyone who leaked classified information, including findings from the Iran NIE.

“All good gifts…”
Rudy might be going down the drain, leaving Romney to fight it out with Huckabee. These guys are scary and a half. The problem is, as Dave Neiwert points out at Orcinus, the only likeable GOP prez candidate in the debates is even scarier.
shine on, Gilly…
The ACLU just sent me an email saying the House plans to take up the restore act this week.

Funny, I went to the link and after reading, copied a section to re-post here..then actually read your comment..it was the same quote.
Has Fox news paid off Judith Regan yet? You know they will in order to protect Rudy. Happy Birthday Steve, we miss you.

selise @ 68
Have you read David’s latest..pretty scary:

whose’s
figurefinger do you want on the button to launch a nuke?not mine. i’m all thumbs and might push it my accident.
I can’t think of the number of times I’ve thought, “I can’t fucking believe ___ just did/said that, I wonder how Gilliard’s going to come down on him/her,” and then thought, “Oh, shit. Steve’s gone.”
Most recently on the Obama-McClurkin thing, but trust me, there’ve been dozens of other bitter little things that have gone down even more painfully for the want of Steve’s lacerating analysis…
selise @ 72
Neither one. But launching a nuke is far from the only form of damage either one of them could do, and if you’re scared enough of Giuliani’s finger on the button to give Paul a chance to make domestic policy, you’re not thinking in your own interest.
I am constantly surprised by how often I think of Steve, whom I only knew through his blog, and wonder what he would have to say about a political, military or social development.
I realized only slowly during the time I was privileged to read him that a major reason I enjoyed Steve so was his absolute trustworthiness. I didn’t aways agree with his point of view, but I always respected the knowledge, passion and commitment he brought to it. His was a unique combination of talents, and, as I said before, I miss more than I would have believed possible. I can’t imagine how difficult it has been for his family and friends.
RE: Nancy Grace.
What a contrast to Steve. Wouldn’t trust her as far as I could throw her. Still I hope she does well. Post-partum pulmonary emboli are fearsome things.
Chris @ 79
Amen Chris. Happy birthday Steve, we’re still missing you . . .and FTFY.
Kay-rik, maybe that’s the sound of Giuliani’s campaign swirling down the toilet bowl, if the allegedly liberal MSM get on this story.
My favorite part is when St Rudy of 9/11 says he had “hundreds” of decisions a day to make. Ah, but Rudy Rudy Rudy, you only had one BFF named Bernie, didn’t you?
Of course this is the guy who wanted to forget he ever had a wife named Donna too…
PW, thanks very much for remembering Steve on his bday.

9/10 and 9/11, I think.
Steve-AR @ 77
i haven’t read his latest, but i think i’ve read most or all of david’s other anti paul posts. i’ve also read glenn, sadly, no! and wiskeyfire. and all the comments – made a few of them myself (and had an interesting coversation in the comments at ornicus with Hume’s Ghost.
Pregnancy at age 48 is not risk free; biological clocks are ticking for a reason.
EvilDrPuma @ 80
i’m trying to think in the planet’s interest. we’ve caused the deaths of over a million people, make refugees out of about 5 million more, made our country hated by all the poor souls we’ve tortured. we’re turning our own country into a police state…
i don’t want either of them to be president. but that doesn’t mean i see them as equally bad. paul brings something useful to the national discussion. i don’t think giuliani does.
selise @ 88
And I think neither one does…Paul just looks better in sheep’s clothing. But the decision between these two is ultimately the right wing’s decision, not mine or yours. I know I wasn’t going to caucus with them, and I rather suspect you weren’t either.
selise @ 86
I can’t put in perspective all of the alleged racist stuff..but I think his anti-abortion stand is very clear. That is enough for me. I watched a teen-age girl die from septic shock caused by a “back alley” abortion in 1971. I would prefer if those days are not brought back.
selise @ 61
Be happy to but I can’t now…perhaps later tonight? Although I’m on the west coast. Email me at peanutbutteratfdl

PTSD on NewsHour
Elliott @ 92
Talk about your double meanings….
EvilDrPuma @ 89
as an example of bringing something useful to the national discussion: i liked that paul brought up robert pape’s research on suicide terrorism during one the of the R debates – and he did a good job of explaining pape’s conclusions (based on emperical data). in fact, far better than anything i’ve see from the Ds (only edwards renouncing the “gwot’ comes close). i’d even be willing to bet most people at fdl haven’t read pape – and, imo, we should.
in any event, i live in MA. my vote doesn’t count for anyone’s primary. the only thing i could do is go to nh to canvass for a candidate…. and like i said, i’m not supporting paul – i just don’t see him as uniquely evil when compared to the other R candidates.
peanutbutter @ 91
ok.. maybe later. thanks.
OT, but want to share, for all of the LA dogs.
John Edwards in LA on Saturday, details here.

Pregnancy is never risk free. Natural process yes, risk free no.
I assume you noticed that labor was induced early due to “pulmonary edema.” One wonders, a la the Bill Frist School of Diagnosis, about pregnancy-associated cardiomyopathy.
New post upstairs
If you missed Charlie Rose last night or the repeat today, you didn’t see film of Norman Mailer predicting in 83 all that has happened in Iraq. Incredible! He and Steve are enjoying one another’s company.
An OT..Ruh Roh..Maybe the cookie is starting to crumble:
Things get worse for Rep. Don Young (R-AK). The feds are chasing Young for his ties to the corrupt oil company Veco (among other things), and he’s already blown $450,000 in campaign funds on criminal defense lawyers. But it looks like investigators pulled out all the stops.
FBI agents recorded former Veco president Rick Smith’s phone calls with Young, the AP reports today. In September, the AP reported that Veco’s CEO Bill Allen had recorded his calls with Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK).
TPM
Steve-AR @ 90
i’m with you. but, i also recognize that our D senate majority leader is anti-abortion. as bad as i think that position is – it’s not something unique to paul.
Late to the thread, but might be worth remembering (and mentioning where appropriate) that Kerik not only became a senior officer in
Giuliani & Partners, but the two of them also formed Giuliani & Kerik, a security company, still existing, but the name’s been changed ;-)
I do have a link I can dig out if anyone wants.
Ya just don’t hear so much about the Giuliani & Kerik entity – hate to see that slip down the memory hole.
Re 102
CBS has the Giuliani and Kerik entity as Giuliani-Kerik, LLC.
Name changed after the unpleasantness to Giuliani Safety & Security.
