We’ve just issued the following press release on behalf of Blue America:
PROGRESSIVE BLOG PAC JOINS WITH IMMIGRANT’S RIGHTS GRASSROOTS TO DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY FROM RAHM
Blue America PAC supports Chicago immigrant grassroots in Cong. Emanuel’s home district, in a fight for the soul of the Democratic Party on immigration issue
PAC launches ads in Spanish, Polish, and Korean press in Congressman Rahm Emanuel’s district
Chicago November 15, 2007 — The Blue America PAC is joining today with ICIRR (Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights) and Chicago grassroots immigrant groups to demand accountability from Congressman Rahm Emanuel. The PAC is funding ads and robocalls calling on Emanuel to:
“Stop being afraid to fight for immigrants, and start acting like a real leader.”
Speaking for Blue America, Howie Klein said:
A few weeks ago Democratic Party insiders under the aegis of the DCCC held a training session in Chicago for a couple dozen of their favored candidates. Afterwards several of the participants, disgusted, let Blue America know that Rahm Emanuel delivered an ominous message demanding that they “move to the right” on immigration.
And yet Emanuel’s own North Side Chicago district is one of the nation’s most immigrant-friendly districts. It always has been. And Emanuel never tires of telling the immigrant communities that he is their best friend. They don’t believe him because his actions– and his inactions– speak far louder than his words.
Starting today, Blue America is teaming up with Illinois’ largest immigrants’ rights coalition, the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, to help bring a little accountability into the life of Mr. Emanuel.
Blue America PAC is a project of four leading progressive blogs: Firedoglake, Down with Tyranny, Crooks and Liars, and Digby. Formed in August 2006, BlueAmerica raised over half a million dollars for progressive candidates in 2006 and is on track to do even more for 2008, supporting “more and better Democrats.”
————————-
There will be a press conference tomorrow at 11:30 AM Central outside Conressman Rahm Emanuel’s office in Chicago (3742 W. Irving Park Ave.) – if you’re in town, please come by and show your support. And no matter where you’re located, you can join the Accountability for Rahm campaign with a donation at Blue America’s Accountability Moment.
Down with Tyranny and The Seminal have more.
J-Ro of The Seminal designed the newspaper ads – An enlarged version in English can be viewed here .

Zed! hello, Siun!
Siun again!
This is just the English translation of the Spnish language ad placed in Snanish language media.
There are different quotes and graphics for the other communities, representing them each.
Hiya Siun!
Cool! Outstanding! GO BLUE AMERICA!
I’ve had an instinctive distrust for Congressman Emanuel since the first begging letter I received from him. His actions in this case confirm I’ve got pretty good instincts.
Hey Gang!
Pach, Howie and J-Ro have done an awesome job – what a very cool campaign!
And the ICIRR folks are wonderful!
I really like the image on the top of the ad.
I don’t know Rahm–maybe he’s an asshole.
Siun!
Pachacutec @ 3
If that’s English, I definitely need new glasses.
John thinks he may have us murdered
Ah, my bad. Howie has the English here.
The ad in the post above is the Spanish version – the link at the bottom goes to the English translation of the Spanish ad.
The ads for the Polish and Korean communities will have different quotes from members of those communities.
howieklein @ 12
In Chicago, that’s just making a point. Don’t take it personal or nuttin’.
rwcole @ 9
I don’t know Rahm personally either. But I think it is a very safe statement to say that he most definitely IS an a**hole. His actions show it quite tellingly.
Eureka Springs @ 8
J-Ro did that.
The woman in the middle holding her grandkids was deported: that’s Teresa Figueroa.
Rahm, how do you like this thumpin?
Hi Howie and Pach!
Yep – John Amato figures we’re in for it now!
Chi based firepups – it would be wonderful if you could join us at the press conference.
YES!!!!
(and thank you.)
Siun and Blue America! Calling BS when it counts. Good for you, and I’m in!
Pachacutec @ 17
Its a great ad. Hopefully, the hispanic community will recognize those heroes.
Pachacutec @ 17
I don’t understand. Why are they blaming Rahm Emanuel for that?
Oooh! Siun, that’s perfect.
If anything can make Rahm sweat, it’s this.
Now Abrams is whoring for Republicans with Pat PukeCannon on the Spitzer immigration driver license issue. Hillary flipped on licenses too.
Cassie: check out the English version and read the quote from the priest.
I’m more concerned with the poor working class citizens who’ve either lost their job or seen a reduction in wages due the illegal immigrant than I am about the rights of illegal immigrants, so should be the Democratic Party.
Loo Hoo. @ 21
Thanks Loo Hoo! This is gonna be a tough one and we want to keep running ads and robo-calls ’til Rahm cries “uncle.” I already had an e-mail today from the DCCC asking if it was OK for Heath Shuler to call me tomorrow. I’ll invite him over for a chat here when he calls. We have a specially dedicated ActBlue Page for this project.
Pachacutec @ 26
I did.
Do other congressmen help with deportations?
PW – it’s pretty neat, eh? I’m just the PR lady on this … Pach and Howie and J-RO and the ICIRR folk made this happen!
ken melvin @ 27
Keeping a worker underclass hurts all workers. Helping workers means giving the rest of the workers here status and protection.
It’s only Walmart and its ilk who want you to think otherwise. Oh, and the racists.
howieklein @ 28
That’s great ! Give Heath a really bad time, please.
howieklein @ 28
Isn’t it interesting how the DCCC starts paying attention when you make Rahm feel THE FEAR.
Makes me think you should make a habit of it.
What are the facts in the Teresa Figueroa case? Was she in violation of immigration laws? On what basis did her supporters expect Rahm to oppose her deportation?
Don’t get me wrong, I am not anti-immigration and I am not defending Rahm. I would just like to know a few more of the facts.
Howie- I just sent you an email about a related point.
I saw the ad earlier at DWT (in English)
Has the ad already run?
If not, for those of us with older poorer glasses, can the headline part be made somewhat smaller and thus the following text LARGER? p.s. I read the English version.
neurophius @ 34
Right. Then I could understand more of what we are talking about.
VG – the ad is running in the papers, the digital size is not (I think) the same size as the ad buy.
VG: It’s a full page ad, and the text styles should be fine in that setting. Tougher on a computer screen.
The ads begin running tomorrow.
when you click on the picture on the other blog, the picture gets bigger
Siun,
The Blue American PAC is firing on all cylinders with this effort!
This rumble with Rahm is righteous!
Thanks from the peanut gallery!
Valley Girl @ 35
As of now it won’t be running in English, just Spanish, Polish and Korean. If we can collect enough contributions we may do English as well. We’re also trying to do a lot of robo-calls so Rahm’s constituents know where he stands.
What happened to DIGG? bad idea?
What a great effort. Well done, Blues.
SanderO @ 43
Dunno. Glitch.
Mad Dogs (who had an awesome comment at PLs the other day!) … there is no peanut gallery in Blue America … we’re all participants!
Scarecrow @ 44
Its proactive! We’ve got to get Human Rights back on the table. This is powerful stuff.
Pachacutec @ 38
Thanks for the info, Pach.
And, BTW, I already made a contribution when this was first posted at FDL on Saturday.
I kicked in a $5 for myself (plus some extra) and a $5 for Jacquie, who has as ever done awesome work for BA.
Howie loves $5 donations, btw. I already set up my matching challenge last Sat., but if anyone else wants to follow my lead, please do so. (I said I would match $5 donations up to a certain amount.)
OMG! I love Blue America. Brilliance. Rahm is going to have to rethink what POWER means!
Real, representative Democracy at work..This is the way it is supposed to work. Bundling a lot of small contributions can’t be ignored..Heath Schuler calling Howie is a prime example,
“Illegal immigration” is a misnomer. Sneaking across a border is no more illegal than speeding on your way to work. It is usually a civil case if you are caught, although technically the offense is a misdemeanor (like speeding). Once you’ve gotten to where you are going, you think “Whew, no one caught me going 75 in a 60″. Well, it’s the same story for crossing an often imaginary line in the sand called a “border”.
You might like to change that, but please, please, please, stop thinking of them as “illegal”. You’ve done the equivalent yourself (well, maybe not Cassie, she’s too young to drive).
What Rahm and the Clinton gang (I don’t include her in it) are doing to the Democratic Party is devastating and depressing. They are following the model attributed to an old Quebec farmer when faced with the question of whether to vote the government out of power: better fat pigs in power than hungry pigs. Rahm and his ilk are hungry pigs.
They have persuaded themselves (and maybe it’s true, give them credit) that this country is run by and for the rich, and that to stay in power you have to cater to them. The difference between them and Rethugs is that they are ready to buy off the rest of us proles rather than simply suppress us, but the end result is the same, and it is heartbreaking to anyone who lives and breathes the democratic dream.
We are going to have to live with this. In it’s own way it will be as bad as Bush, because we had higher expectations.
Perhaps a spotlight to the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, and other Windy City radio and television outlets might get some additional news attention also.
Gordon M I have been driving for two weeks already!
GordonM @ 51
I prefer ‘Undocumented Aliens’ myself…! 8-)
Steve-AR @ 50
I hope he allows me to tape the call. Jane fixed me up with Skype and this program that records all the Blue America calls. I’m so pissed that I don’t have the hour-long conversation I had last year with Steny Hoyer. It was so classic. But I bet Heath will be funny too.
Can anyone involved with this project respond to my No. 34 above? It was not a rhetorical question. Cassie would like to know, too.
A link would suffice…
Howie-
I know you highlighted an “angel” last weekend, who was willing to match $$ up to a certain amount for this effort.
I gave $$ at that time. What is the status of the “angel offer”?
SnarKassandra @ 54
Learner’s permit or license?
Siun @ 46
Sheesh…you’re making me {{{blush}}}.
Ooops. I guess I’d better pick up my mess of shells on the floor. Don’t want to be littering here at The Lake. LOL!
GordonM @ 59
License!
SnarKassandra @ 54
No fender benders yet? ;-)
neurophius @ 57
Here you go.
SnarKassandra @ 54
Now you tell us? :)
Congratulations.
I just got this in the mail.
SnarKassandra @ 61
Congrats! I missed that. My son is 6 months from getting his.
Scarecrow @ 64
Heh, She’s trumpeted it for some time now…!
First google link on Teresa, a little dated.
Just popped in to say hi, and wondered if the tall foreheads in D.C. or at the local state house can ever think of these people as people with out documents, not comic book villains.
Scarecrow @ 64
My birthday was Novem 1 and I got my license on Nov 2.
CTuttle @ 67
Well, that’s not the first time I’ve been way behind what’s happening with another generation.
OK. I read all about Teresa. But I still don’t understand WHY people expect her congressman to help.
When my mom got arrested, we never told our congressman.
CTuttle @ 55
So that would be ET I presume?
Try “undocumented persons” or “undocumented visitors” as a more accurate description.
My brother used to say I was an alien from planet Female.
I feel kinda bad ‘cuz this is the first time I haven’t left a tip.
SnarKassandra @ 72
Congressmen are asked to help constituents out for all kinds of reasons all the time. They call it “constituent services” and they all do it as part of their job description and to sustain their political viability. Senators, too.
CTuttle @ 55
Aliens sounds like creatures from outer space. Could we please call them undocumented immigrants or undocumented persons?
Thanks for the link, Peterr.
SnarKassandra @ 54
And we’ve been watching from the sidewalk…way, way back on the sidewalk. *g*
So how do you like them gas prices?
My nephew (your age and just got his license) complains he’ll needs his job just to pay for gas to go to his job. And it just ain’t fair.
And I tell him about the “good ol’ days” when 3 bucks would fill a tank and you could drive all day on it.
I prefer ‘Undocumented Aliens’ myself…! 8-)
So that would be ET I presume?
Try “undocumented persons” or “undocumented visitors” as a more accurate description.
Dakine – thanks! my daughter was never happy with the alien title before she became a citizen …
dakine01 @ 73
Heh, as I was typing, I thought of that, yet, alien is the proper legal term…! :P
Pach- do you know anything about the status of the “angel” offer?
It is about time for him to be accountable to all of us. He is another huge problem for the Dems along with the rest of the DLC.They are never on the right issue and they are a bunch of corrupt pols. We have a choice this election and one is to vote for progressives and to throw the rest of the entrenced pols out which includes the Pres candidate that will not be named since she supports everything that is a detriment along with her good pal Rahm etc.
Howie said:

Howie – who were these candidates? Is there a way we can find out? Do you know why these particular candidates were chosen?
Mad Dogs @ 79
Here’s the deal. I have a license but not a car or even use of a car most of the time. So I don’t get to drive anywhere. :( Doesn’t matter what gas costs.
Who’s going to run against Rahm? As nice as this ad is, that’s what’s going to get his attention: real competition in a safe district. As long as the choice is between Rahm and a Republican, everyone will chose Rahm (myself included). That said, currently there’s a Green on the ballot … about whom I know absolutely nothing, including his/her name.
Valley Girl @ 82
In play, as far as I know. Still active.
SnarKassandra @ 72
Members of Congress can introduce what is called a “private bill” that grants a person some kind of legal status and allows them to remain in the country. They are rare and hard to get, but not unheard of. Most often the person has some kind of compelling story but has somehow run afoul of immigration authorities.
What these private bills amount to, of course, is amnesty granted on a case by case basis. According to this WaPo story from July, Carl Levin and Dianne Feinstein lead the Dems in proposing such bills; two of the leading Republicans were Saxby Chambliss and . . . Duncan Hunter? Yep.
But please — don’t ask Duncan to call it amnesty.
SnarKassandra @ 85
Uh-oh, all dolled up and no place to go, eh? ;-)
The other attention thing — other than finding someone NOW to run a serious race against Rahm in 2010 — is for Mark Pera to beat Dan Lipinski in IL 03. Lipinski is real old Chicago machine, just like Rahm … and if Pera wins it will be wind rattling through the bars of the cage (or something like that …). It will make EVERY machine politician in Chicago take notice: esp. Rahm, who knows the netroots don’t like him either.
One point that needs to be made is that if we cannot force comprehensive immigration reform very soon, there will be an overwhelming patchwork of local laws dealing with immigration.
Oklahoma just passed one of the worst anti-immigrant bills out there–HB 1804. It will give the dog-whistle term “States Rights” garlic-soup strength, and pity the judges that overturn these bills.
So much to do…so little time.
Siun @ 7
Very nice to see this outreach — finding common ground with natural allies. Making Rahm sweat makes me smile.
Maybe having to defend himself at home will prevent him from recruiting ex-GOPs and GOP-lites to run against our progressive Blue America candidates.
Rahm, tend to your homefires, please.
I have a friend here in San Diego County who goes to Mexico for serious dental work. (She can’t afford it here.) She tells me that people who walk across the border are not checked for paperwork. Not first hand, but she says that the officers let her through without a glance. She is of Italian heritage, so maybe she “looks” safe, but it still strikes me as bizarre. Whenever I drive across, I have to show paperwork and “speak” so that they know I am a native English speaker.
Oilfieldguy @ 91
I agree, but, look what happened when Hill jumped on that shark…!
It’s not like they are demanding fourty acres and a mule.
I just gave some geld!…This is great thank you all at the lake, this is exciting. I can’t stand Rham and his DINO surrogates!
Siun,
I’m documented. Here and there, that is. The USAF says I’m not documented, but the first question Bill Clinton asked when he got to the White House was “Does ET really exist?”
Careful, or I’ll send my buddies after you.

Siun @ 46
We are “the people formerly known as the audience” in political and media affairs. We are here. Hear us roar!
Ed*ard Teller @ 97
707! Aloha, ET!
CTuttle @ 94
Heh…yeah. I posted about HB 1804 over at my place and a couple of rightards threw some verbal grenades at me in the comments.
You can check it out if you want. Sometimes these guys are just stupid.
CTuttle @ 81
As is often pointed out (and paraphrased), something may be considered the legal means of expression but that does not make it the correct way of expressing.
Rahm and Shuler will be watching how much we raise for this project. They understand money.
They also understand numbers, so $5 donations are huge too.
Loo Hoo. @ 93
No, they just want to hear Yertle the Turtle one more time.
VG, did you say something about an angel? I haven’t read the whole thread.
Loo Hoo
Walking which way?
GordonM @ 103
But lots of legal immigrants are not good at English yet. And many illegal immigrants are from countries where they speak English like us.
Pollster John Zogby says Ron Paul could take 15-18 percent of the vote in the New Hampshire Primary.
Some say that 1st Lt. Bush had some “documentation” problems.
ET – I love it! send them my way!

I heard he liked to play in the snow…
Oilfieldguy @ 100

Oilfieldguy @ 100
True! This is a gem…
“Why is it that liberals are the biggest racists of all?”
He just doesn’t like ya, eh?
Oilfieldguy @ 104
OFG- I was referring back to a Saturday post by Howie. The angel info is at the end of that post.
http://www.firedoglake.com/200…..in-charge/
Racists are very noisy, and they have the politicians running scared.
How did Reagan do it?
Con huevos?
This is fantastic!
This isn’t about what one thinks about immigration concerns. This action is about so much more. It’s about stopping the mega-corporate takeover of the Constitution, and swinging the pendulum back to the ideals that America was founded upon.
This whole Blue America thing is like watching a dream come true right before my eyes. After so many years of fellow Liberals giving up and saying we’ve got to support the lessor of two evils, and chastising people like me for demanding more out of our politicians and government, it’s actually happening.
This is the emdodiment of Steve Gilliard’s mantra: “We Fight Back.” He would be very proud of you all.
If you want to see more of this, visit the Blue America donation page.

Strange- the pressures of thinking that everything in the universe depends on YOU- and you KNOW that you are an incompetent bastard.
SnarKassandra @ 72
Congressmen help with these sorts of issues all of the time. For example, a friends of mine got engaged many years ago, the problem was one of them was from another country. She left the US and went home to get all the paperwork to come back to this country and there was some sort of hitch. They wrote the appropriate members of the MA Congressional delegation, whatever the problem was got sorted out, and she came back over. Dealing with the INS has always been a hassle, its just gotten worse over time from what I can tell.
Steve-AR – thank you for the link on the cyclone. Our news does’t like to venture outside our borders …
It seems to me that the people who are screaming the loudest about undocumented immigrants have got it backwards. If there were no market for people to cross a border, the number of people crossing that border would drop. We currently have many laws regarding hiring of undocumented immigrants, but they are not enforced. At least, they aren’t enforced to the point that companies who violate the law stop doing it because it is no longer profitable. I realize it is asking a lot to expect the current administration to do anything that would cost their big business buddies a nickel, but it would seem to be a win for the dems to turn the argument on it’s head. That would require the dems to grow a spine, of course. Am I completely missing something here?
dakine01 @ 101
Hah, at least it’s legal, Bra! :P

An excellent suggestion.

Bonkers – good point! Let’s all make BA donations in Gilly’s honor!
And while you were focusing on the immigration crap, that same piece of shit was moving to push back the comtempt vote until at least december. ya know what? the goopers will have sewn up the election before the primaries ever take place!
VG, yes, I remember that. I did not know if we had another one or not.
Waving to TSF–and Siun. I still owe you a dinner!

It looks like Howie covered some of this at DWT a few weeks back.
Steve-AR @ 111
Oy…
Something I do not understand. How can a spouse be deported? If you marry a citizen, don’t you automatically become a citizen?
STEVE
Well yeah- Pakistan has been the most dangerous nation in the world for some time. As I recall, it was the nation for whom candidate Bush could not name the ruler.
They have spread nuclear technology to the enemies of america- and our president thinks it’s just an enema.
Oilfieldguy @ 132
There’s a process whereby you need to prove your marriage is real. Perhaps these people have failed that test, or other tests. I used to think it was automatic, but it’s not.
Loo Hoo. @ 127
Ireland is supposed to have provided more than its share.
Siun @ 19
I just tossed in $30 to Blue America. Keep up the great work!!!
Teddy
Well- there’s nothing automatic about the process. I have been married to two Europeans. In the case of the first- we applied for a green card for her- and she died before it was ever granted- the second is now a US citizen- but it took a long time and our marriage really had nothing to do with granting her citizenship.
And the reason no one is running against him is?
Please start now?
jo6pac
TSF, Yeah, years ago the FBI came looking for my brother because he knew a woman who was marrying for profit, helping people become citizens.
Do they want videos? Talk about Big Brother! Ay Caramba!

I wasn’t even thinking of Steve when I just made mine. Just all the more reason to do it.
Oilfieldguy @ 132
No, but you move to the head of the line, and, not supposed to be deported, unless there’s probably cause, such as a felony offense or it can be proven that it’s a financial transaction… Ironically, that ex-FBI/CIA agent is being charged with it, atop of the aiding and abetting Hezbollah…
TeddySanFran @ 141
Teddy- that is what I have read also. Too late to primary Rahm, this time around.

more importantly – howie: you and jane and pach and siun and everyone who worked on this project or just gave you moral support are amazing! thank you so much – i would have lost hope for change through the electoral system long ago (well, i’d already lost it but then jane convinced me that ned was the real deal).
going to get out my credit card now… only wish i had more to give.
dakine01 @ 135
Yes, but I was referring to native American English speaking. Know what I mean, Cassie?
I had a foreign exchange student daughter from Brazil, and even though she spoke English, they knew she wasn’t a native American. speaker. Clarifying my earlier comment.
rwcole @ 133
IIRC Bush also with held from Congress the Intel that Pakistan was increasing its production of Plutonium 239.
TeddySanFran @ 150
For Gilly!
But Canadians sound like people from the US. Northern people.
Steve-AR @ 153
And tried to make an incredibly stupid nookular deal with India.
SnarKassandra @ 155
If you’ll watch the South Park movie you will learn that that is not the case at all.
Oilfieldguy @ 132
Nothing is automatic. All requires documentation and fees. First, a fiance must be legal, hopefully. If not, you still can marry, but you will have more legal wrangling to deal with. When you marry a non citizen, she may be a legal alien with a fiance visa. She is permitted to enter the US to marry you and only you. Your name will be on the visa. You will have to have visited her in her native country and have photos of your meeting. More than one meeting is preferrable.
Then once you are married, she will be a conditional resident alien. That is, her residency is dependent on the marriage for two years. After that, she must apply for unconditional alien residency. She may apply for citizenship concurrently. She can divorce your *ss after she gets unconditional residency. You know – in case it wasn’t really true love.
Teddy
Yeah- I would guess that neither Pakistan nor India have the faintest idea of what the US policy is towards their region.
The nukes for India thing was just to repay Westinghouse- but the world doesn’t quite understand that.
OT Teddy- do you know when the usual Presidential veto is likely to occur re: ENDA?
SnarKassandra @ 155
Only to a Texan ;-).
hackworth @ 158
All of which only applies if you are of different genders, btw.
SnarKassandra @ 142
Not speaking for the pact, but I think that it’s because whenever someone makes a campaign contribution, they have to state that they are an American citizen and realize that it’s not a tax write-off. Blue America has made it a lot easier. Once the info is entered, it is remembered. Just have to put in the first letter or number. (Is that just my computer pr is that Blue America???)
“We Fight Back” is so illustrative of the genius of Gilliard. So simple, yet encapsulates what the netroots, and Blue America in particular are all about.

That isn’t mentioned much but that is the reason; Westinghouse has invested a lot in their new reactor designs..they need markets..South West Asia is perfect.
TeddySanFran @ 156
Hah! Cassie, is right, ya’ll have some misguided preconceptions of Canucks, speaking as an expat…!
Oilfieldguy @ 132
There’s lots of paperwork involved in that. The spouse from another country stays on as a resident alien for some number of years, and can attain US citizenship after that. My mom, as a canadian has had that choice for years and she prefers to keep her Canadian Citizenship even after 30 some odd years. It’s a choice any legal immigrant has if they marry a US citizen. Mom had to renew her visa a few years back, and the paperwork is atrocious. She had to go to Toronto and Detroit. Now i think it’s Buffalo and Detroit again. Presence of the embassies are important.
CTuttle @ 168

ENDA is unlikely to pass the Senate.
The current House/Senate conference gay wrangling is over the Hate Crimes Bill, which the House has passed independently and the Senate has passed attached to the Defense Authorization Bill. It’s a very close thing, and entirely dependent on who’s appointed as conferees tonight from the House, apparently.

I suspect that this has nothing to do with Blue America, but rather the sponsoring site, Actblue.com. that is where those questions should be sent.

Hi. I asked a lady I know about this–she’s in her 80s, and I wanted to get her opinion. She said her dad had come from Bohemia in 1911 without papers and she didn’t get what all the fuss was about. He was a miner. Her husband was a miner. People come to better themselves…she understood that. She thought Lou Dobbs was a crank. ;)

mack @ 176
Actually, I live in Maine, which is in between.
hackworth @ 157
This is about how it went for a friend of mine. She’s from New Zealand, met and married an American while both were working in Saudi Arabia. Their oldest child was born in NZ and carries dual citizenship, the youngest was born here and also has dual I believe. She had a green card for over 6 years, and finally got her citizenship within the last 6 months. Katrina buggered up the process, they were on the final steps when everything stopped after the hurricane. Meanwhile, every time she leaves the country (1-2 x year) to visit family, she has been held upon re-entry, often to the point of missing connecting flights. The last time her husband had to fly to LA and vouch for her personally before they would let her travel home. Colossal PITA.
Margot my mom’s family was here when it was still Mexico. Then it was the Republic of Texas. And now we’re Americans. All in the same place.
GordonM @ 174
Interestingly, I find there’s much more disparities in the Queen’s own, Stateside, ie, between a Georgia Drawl and a Maine Downeast accent, than a B.C. accent compared to a Nova Scotia accent…
GordonM @ 181
Still a good Canadian name
^_^
TeddySanFran @ 172
Teddy, I saw that earlier about it being passed in the Senate, being attached to a Defense Authorization Bill. I was thinking of sending you a link. Sorry I did not. I did not realize that there was still House/ Senate wrangling going on.
RBG @ #131 – thanks for the link. That pretty much answered my questions.
So Jeb has the same business sense as his ner do well brother? Figures. Incompentence runs in the family. Daddy as a pilot jumped out of a naval aircraft with all aboard.
Hey Mack!
Me too … gonna be a little bit of a dash to get there between client calls … I’ll be the one running to catch up!
CTuttle @ 182
Come to Louisiana sometime, we speak a whole other language, cher.
Go get him-Rahm needs to learn that HE works for the people in his district. Si se puede.

If yer downtown I’ll split the cab…
CTuttle @ 183
Well, if by that you mean that your countrymen allow the speaking of 18th century French, I’ll agree :-).
Despite “Burt and I”, there’s a huge difference in Maine accents, all being erased in this digital era.
House/Senate wrangling is where the sausage is really made.

SnarKassandra @ 183
I know, Cassie. This is how it was for many of my friends growing up. Their families had been in that area since the 1500s.
GordonM @ 181
I recently worked for a couple of weeks with a Canuck named Owen. He was great! I got away with telling a Canuck joke of my own to my class yesterday. They’re Alaskans, so they got it…
GordonM @ 180
fwiw, sounds like Scots to me.
GordonM @ 15
I’m still alive, but I think someone is lurking outside my window!

Heh, ever since the Anglos kicked all those Acadians outta Nova Scotia…! ;-)

From Pach’s link at 68:
“Figueroa originally came here to join her husband, who entered the country two years earlier (also illegally) and took a job as a landscape worker. She later snuck their four children across the Texas border through El Paso. Their oldest son is now married. Another son attends junior college, while two daughters are high school honor students.”

John Amato @ 198
Is it Ann Althouse?
And in the wake of the FBI’s determination that Blackwater shot up 14 people without justification in one incident alone, not to mention the countless other cases of reckless use of force, Obama is out in front again asking the right question. God forbid Fox should stop attacking Obama with made up smears and slurs and join him in asking the right questions back here in the real world. (But we all know that’s a fantasy because back here in the real world Fox and Murdoch are slime.) Why in the world would we give this contractor more business right now??? Shouldn’t Blackwater be on probation at a minimum? Shouldn’t its existing contracts be under review? That they are not is totally irresponsible.
It’s predictable, if not understandable or justifiable, that the leading Fox Republican candidates are backing their fearless incompetent leaders on this one, but where is Hillary again? Where is she? She’s knows better. Where is she? Hillary are you out there? Or are you in your little hole again like when you were voting to empower the President to go to war in Iraq, or voting to empower him to attack “terrorists” in the form of part of the Iranian military?
Man do we need a change. Our Fox Republican politicians and some Democrats have lost their moral compass.

Old town Mack … Old Town
gonna be a run!
mack @ 201
Yup. Where my family (McMillan) came through. First stop was Minnesota. No one in my direct lineage went South, but lots of whatever degree cousins did.
mack @ 205
Two or three times in a single day, even.
GordonM @ 192
Yep. Last summer, when I gently backed my rental car into a ditch on Cape Rosier, the guy who responded to my AAA call did not sound like a Mainer at all. I think he was in Portland. And, pretty dumb to boot. He couldn’t read the map, and had not heard of the Maine Gazateer. Essential reference for driving in Maine.
rwcole @ 188
Well that’s what they say. Judging by the Boosh Crime Family’s propensity to lie, I’ve always wondered about that story. Maybe we need to start a PAC called the “PT Boat Veterans for Truth.”
The Bush Crime Family needs to be dismantled…forever.
Siun — forgot to thank you earlier for this post. I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to see Blue America work to get the attention of Dems who think they can safely blow us off. I $ent a little love to BA :) Thanks!
Amato, call TRex, quick.
CTuttle @ 199
The Cajun accent is completely different from the New Orleans/Yat accent. To me the NOLA accent sounds like a cross between southern and Brooklyn, while the Cajun has more of a sing-song lilt to it. The pronunciations are waht really get me. Burgundy is Bur-GUN-dy, Caliope is Cal-EE-ope.
Peterr @ 211
Early and often
Early and often
btw – have you found Wyandotte #1 BBQ?
My wife got her green card after one month. A green card is a work permit. The next step is resident alien status. The first part is called conditional resident alien status – as residency is conditioned upon survival of the marriage. If the couple divorces – the alien resident cannot stay in the US. After two years, unconditional alien residency should be applied for. Citizenship can be applied for concurrently.
A child fathered by a US citizen who is born in a foreign country will be a US citizen and can hold dual residency with the country of birth. Citizenship for a child comes from the father (archaic as it may be). However, if a child is born in the US then the child is a US citizen. The child is not a dual citizen in that case. The child is a citizen of the US only. I wish my child were born in Canada. Everything would have been paid by the Canadian Heath care system. – which is excellent as far as I am concerned. Since my son was born in the US, he does not have the benefit of dual citizenship – which would have provided him with Canadian Heath care for life, eh?
Rahmen Brutal
Valley Girl @ 211
Are you *sure* he was from Maine? Maybe he was one of Lou Dobbs’ nightmares, who slipped over the border and stole a job from a real Mainer.
*g*
CTuttle @ 199
One of the closest accents to New Orleans is Philadelphia or NYC. Just slower.

I think it is a “so what” but I am not sure; looking at the votes may show something.

“Danger, Will Robinson! Aliens approaching!!!”
Peterr @ 219
Peterr- I don’t think so. Most of those who slip over the border are not working the phones at the Automobile Association. I think he may have simply been a recent product of the BushCo. no child left behind act.

madmommy @ 216
I got a little taste of it while I was stationed at Ft. Polk…
Steve-AR @ 224
Something about this bill feels like a game…set up by Dems who just passed 400 plus billion which
GeorgeDick could use for war spending if he needed to..I have an OT question.
Did y’all hear about how one of Mccain’s voters called Clinton a bitch? And now the media is mad at him.
Is BITCH that bad a word? Lots of people use it all the time. Why was it such a huge deal?
OT – I’m just lovin’ “The Brothers Crack-me-up” over at TPM Muckraker:
TeddySanFran @ 157
We have regional accents here just like you do in the US.
just to add my thanks to you all for putting this together! Make Rahmie sweat!
SnarKassandra @ 231
Well, for one thing, no one would have called her that if she wasn’t a woman…
It is also a big deal, not just because some anonymous McCain supporter called her that, but because by his reaction, McCain implied that he approved…
Some have even suggested that it was a “planted question”…
neokneme @ 223
To me, what’s astounding about the recent Repube collapse, is that it’s happening EVEN THOUGH they have a complicit Conglomerate Media cheerleading for them constantly. That’s how massive of a failure they’ve been.
I always felt Rove got too much credit for Shrub’s “selections.” These twits came around at a point in time where a 30 year neocon plan was coming to fruition, and Rove and Co. were just picking the fruits. I think this theory is proven by the ‘06 elections and what’s gonna happen next year. Even though the Conglomerate Media is trying to distract and confuse still, the ‘06 elections were possibly the biggest Democratic sweep in history. Thanks Karl!
(standing on chair clapping)
excellent work siun and team. rahm will learn we are still fighting back.
Fern @ 232
I went to a Shakespeare fest (somewhere or other) and a few of the actors joined a private group. Canadians. They sounded like Scots.
hiya Suzanne!!!!
gonna dive from your chair?
neurophius @ 235
McCain’s reaction was complete hypocracy, instead of immediately responding that he would not stoop to using slurs of this nature, he just chuckled and moved on. IOKIYAR, a dem doing the same thing would have already been censured on the floor of the Senate by now.
too cold to dive cassie, in the 50’s right now and dropping
Fern @ 233
I agree, as an ex-Albertan, but, I wouldn’t put it in the same league as a Southern drawl as opposed to a New England accent…
I speak the very best American language — Texan!
SnarKassandra @ 231
I saw the vid clip on Hardball. The “question” was something like: “How are we gonna beat that bitch?”.
The namecaller was a hoity-toity upper-crust bottle-blonde dowager-type who really laced her pronunciation with venom.
The room full of McCain supports all laughed, as did McCain.
The “hate” in the question was so venomous that one could sense it through the TV.
Thus spake Repugs.
Eureka … what, you don’t think $450Billion is going to stop the war?
harumph!
SnarKassandra @ 243
Would that be real Texan or Sears Texan?
hackworth @ 244
Central Texan!
Mad Dogs – any chance you saw RIck Sanchez (who I’ve been enjoying a lot recently!) talk about this – McCain is now saying it’s all Sanchez’ fault that anyone noticed this!
I’ve only heard a lot of the ontario accents because that’s where most of my family is located on the canadian side of it. But i’ve heard a Nova Scotian one because on of the other DJs i work with is from there. It always makes our online meetings amusing, since the core group is rather scattered in terms of geography. Two ladies from Michigan, one Nova Scotian Canuck, and an Aussie.
The NS is a shadow of scots, but it’s still neat that you can hear it in the speech.
The free Spanish newspapers supported entirely by advertising have the most readership. I think the Chicago Tribune owns the Hoy and they still might be charging money for it.
Which makes an add buy there a waste we had to return almost all the copies we distrubuted when it first came out.
The Korean Times and Daily might also be Trib owned the Trib at least distrubtes them.
Rahm depends on Mayor Daley’s machine to get elected and Daley needs good relations with minorites or at least no complaints is da Mayor up for reelection soon?
If Daley gets spooked then he will reel Rahm in better than Bill ever did!
Cassie — The phrase, “How are we going to beat the bitch?”
also has a not-so-subtle connotation of domestic violence, particularly when one attendee sez “I thought you were talking about my ex-wife.” Lots of Hillary- and woman-hatred in that room, even though the question was asked by a woman.
CTuttle @ 241
The Southern drawl is more complex than you realize. Huge differences by area and even within a major metropolitan area.
trex is up

madmommy @ 216
First time my brother was in New Orleans he mistakenly pronounced French street names as if they were, you know, French. No one had a clue what he was talking about.
thanks teddy.
i didn’t think about the “beat” part.
SnarKassandra @ 257
Together with the “ex-wife” comment — which McCain also laughed at, by the way — it all comes together in a perfect storm of woman-hating. Recall that McCain has an ex-wife as well, whom he adulterated with his current wife upon returning from Hero-ness.
That wasn’t a stupid question, right?
No french in North America approaches french.
When my late french wife would call Canada, she would get a french speaking canadian on the phone- after five minutes of pain she would say “Please connect me to someone who speaks ENGLISH!”
Some say that Canadian- and arcadian french- is french from the seventeenth century…some say the same about american english.. I don’t know- but I DO know that french people don’t have the faintest idea what to make of it.
Siun @ 248
No, Ricky is one of those CNN newsmumblers that I avoid like the plague.
He and Tony Harris are like fingernails scratching chalkboards to my sensitive ears.
Seems like CNN hired ‘em both straight off a used-car sales lot.
I’ve been known to miss all kinds of news ’cause the presenter drives me crazy. Should I get my ears checked and re-visit Rick for some edifying gotcha stuff?
SnarKassandra @ 259
As the old adage has it: “There is no such thing as a stupid question.”
Now answers are an entirely different matter. *g*
rwcole @ 260
Aw, they were probably just speaking civil-service French, poor things.
TeddySanFran @ 142
But you start now the chances go up on winning, congress is only 2 yrs. So why not support someone now. It’s cheaper in the long run or aren’t Progressives thinking that way.
jo6pac
This is a long battle
rwcole @ 260
I’ve heard actual French and the difference from Canadian french is insanely huge. The nasal tones for one thing, are very distinct and grating in Quebecois French. That said, i HATE the sound of it. That nasal note just grates on me for some reason. Yet i can watch Luc Besson’s stuff in subtitles without a hitch.
Mad Dogs – I’ve just recenty caught some of Rick Sanchez’ solo show (can’t remember the title, up against KO) and he’s been interesting. I’ve not seen a ton but he did some very good stuff on immigration and embarassed some racist spouters will a discussion of his own background … it was good to see.
And he really took on McCain … did it right and it was a joy to see.
Try him again – maybe occasional try?
Siun @ 267
On your recommendation only. Now where did I leave those Q-tips?
Thanks for the opportunity to help kick Rahm’s butt in a positive way.
Peterr @ 211
No, no, only if you’re dead. …
Emanuel is the son of an immigrant. A strange immigrant, his father Benjamin was a terrorist in the racist Irgun.
During the 1991 war, what did Emanuel do? Support American troops? No, he went to work as a civilian for the Israeli army.
One has to wonder where his preferences lie.
bernarda @ 271
Oooohhh, and I thought maybe he was of south american extraction… No wonder he’s so very much like a neocon!
He really NEEDS a Primary challenge, and I’d be contributing to whoever wants the job!
Is everybody finally realizing how much of a scourge Rahm Emanuel is to the democratic party? The Clintons are the ones who’ve put him on the map.
