We really need to be into more the kind of calm rational discourse that worked so well 4 and a half years ago, to prevent what would have been a nasty and unending situation in Iraq… and to that end, I think I’ll lead the way…and clean up MY posts first.

Well, excuse me, but potty-mouth diatribes just do NOT turn me on. Politically, or in any other way. Potty mouth diatribes are the worst part of FDL, in my book, and are the least enjoyable part. I have a hard time seeing how they improve any line of argument, except for expressing feelings, and it seems to me that there are better ways to do that. In most places, writing with dirty words is either a mark of immaturity or pornography, and is a barrier to many people to taking FDL seriously. It’s as if the writer has a comment in the margin of his notes, “point weak here; use dirty words.” To me, dirty words are like bright shiny objects distracting attention from the main point.

Take this in the context that FDL is the first blog I read in the morning, and the main blog I read throughout the day.

So, sorry if any firepups are offended, but that is my honest reaction. If we want to be taken seriously, clean it up.

Only ~40% of fertilized ova make it to term. 50% fail to attach in utero, and another 10% subsequently miscarry.

That makes for roughly 2.5 million possibly “suspicious child deaths” a year in the U.S.

Well there’s a simple way to end the “holocaust” of all those American citizens…according to the Encyclical of St. Ron Paul.

First off you have to identify and register new citizens. Just as all children who are born must have birth certificates, new citizens would have to be documented by “Conception certificates”. Which means monthly mandatory pregnancy tests given to every fecund female above age 12. Wouldn’t want to miss any new citizens.

Then you have to have laws that protect these fetal citizens from harm that might be done to them by their ignorant mothers. That means that a ban on smoking, drinking, athletic activity, etc. that might harm the “voiceless citizens. If there is a miscarriage (now defined as any death of the citizen prior to birth) then an investigation must ensue to ascertain cause…drug and alcohol tests and physical examination must ensue. Criminal charges of neglect and “fetal abuse” would then be pressed against the “maternal receptical”. The term of punishment would be similar to intentional neglect and abuse charges of a child.

And where possible embryos that have genetic or developmental defects would have to be protected from “spontaneous abortion” by the best efforts of Doctors. These “early citizens” have the right to life and medical treatment just as much as adults, no matter how physically deformed or mentally defective they are. Perhaps they could be trained to fill the jobs that the illegal aliens now hold.

And since many contraception methods also act to expel already fertilized eggs or prevent implantation, such forms of hormonal birth control would have to be outlawed. Wouldn’t want to risk harming a citizen simply for the carnal pleasure of her mother, now would we.

Amazing what the consequences would be of granting citizenship rights to conceptuses would be. We’d be living in a perfect Paulian utopia!

How does an egg vote?

Children can be citizens (”natural born”) but are only eligible as citizens to vote or serve in certain offices upon reaching specified ages. The reference to this right is implicit when the Constitution refers to “natural born Citizens” (it’s also got a long history in English law…jus soli)

I’m still puzzled about how a corporation deserves citizenship rights though. The individuals within that corporation, okay. But how does a corporation “vote”? Serve in an office? How is it “born”?

Thus I dn’t see how a corporation can have unrestricted free speech rights and influence the political debate through financing campaigns.

Paul wants to alter the Constitution to exclude “Natural Born” (Jus soli) citizenship that has been part of law extending back even further than the Declaration of Independance and Constitution. It is not just stated in the 14th Amendment (which dealt with the specific exclusion of Citizenship to slaves and Native Americans enunciated in the Constitution). But all others were covered by jus soli.

This is clear from the requirements of officeholders, such as the President
No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

So Paul is hardly a “preserver” of the Constitution. He wants to change it (or pass laws contrary to it) to eliminate specific portions that he and his supporters find inconvenient.
