William died very peacefully at our vet’s office about 9:45 this morning. I knew yesterday that we’d be taking him in but didn’t want to put a damper on anyone’s Halloween by saying so. He started doing badly on Tuesday night, and by yesterday had lost much of his bowel and bladder control and his ability to walk. He didn’t seem to be in pain, just very weak. We shut down the trick-or-treating early and spent the evening in bed with him, which he seemed to enjoy. (Nov 1, 2007, 10:09am)
Poppy wanted me to thank all of you who contributed to William’s medical fund. Between the vitamin injections, steroid shots, and IV fluids, we managed to make the final days a little easier on him and the rest of the family.
And as agreed, here is the song I recorded to thank you all. It’s Peter Gabriel’s “Here Comes the Flood”, which was a request of Poppy’s. The photo in the clip is of Poppy and William on one of their last nights together.
I could not have put this video together without the invaluable help of newtonusr late, late last night. The guitarist on this track is Ryan Cattle of the Athens band Blue Flashing Light. The session was produced and engineered by my brother, PaTRex.
I’m pretty nervous about putting this up. It’s the first recording of my voice in at least seven or eight years. To me, I sound pretty rusty, but aside from the inevitable sniping I’ll get from people like Ann Althouse (hey, at least I’m better than Sanjaya!) and other bad faith actors, I think we did a pretty good job.
Thanks for helping.
Good night.

Good night, TRex.
And same to all of you.

Wow TRex! Thank you.
TRex! I hate losing a pet…
Thanks TRex!
You’re quite good.

I really enjoyed this. Your voice is so soft and perfect for the song. Thank you for sharing this with us. It’s lovely.
omg TRex, this is beautiful, and I’m not ashamed to say that I’m in floods of tears here
Great voice you got there, TRex.
I love you TRex.
I am so jealous of you firedogs going to the meet-up.
Take lots of photos.
Oh, now I’m crying again.

marymccurnin @ 17
Oh, honey. I love you too!

TRex is there anyway to get that as a mp3 for my ipod? it was wonderful…
AND did you see the pictures of the Portland & Seattle meetups on my FB page?
katymine @ 22
Yes, and yes.
I am going to see if I can get newtonusr to show me how to post this to my public folder so that anyone who wants it can come and download it.
TRex @ 18
everyone better bring their cameras because my digital camera is pretty much toast.
TRex, we gotta get you to the next Texas firepup get-together.
Thank you for the lullaby, TRex.
That was beautiful.
TexBetsy @ 25
I’m scared of Texas.
That’s deep red GOP territory.
But for you, I would brave it.
from the Duh! department:
TRex, awwww!
Well, I had better go to bed. Got to give the young ‘uns that old time religion tomorrow (I will not be responsible for the consequences). Take care and enjoy the snark (as well as TRex’s wonderful song).
Did the Seattle folks tell you that Funnydiva2002 made all of us Firepup Christmas ornaments in the shape of red poodles? Will get a pic of it and post it too…
And thanks for the mp3 TRex…
night Dr D
good night DrD, sleep well
Thanks so much for the positive comments, guys.
Singing was my life for many years. I miss being in the kind of vocal shape that comes from singing your head off every night, out on the road.
I do NOT miss, however, band fights, shitty food, sleeping in strange places, that ’special’ smell that the van got after a couple of days away from home, ah, yes, the ‘joys’ of touring.
*whew, recollecting myself*
just went in to my room, where my kitteh is lounging on my bed, and told her that I love her. Of course she takes that as her due ;-)
Beautiful, TRex. Poppy and William look so sweet…
Aloha, Dr D!
TRex @ 23
Send email at your convenience and we’ll walk through it, Big Guy!
TRex @ 27
TRex, Austin is a liberal oasis in a vast redneck wasteland. (No slight meant to any TX FPs here!) You come on down now, y’hear?
next texas meet-up is at green warrior’s and the next one at LS’s place.
Muchas gracias, but not tonight, please. I am not hunching over the computer and not eating dinner until 2:30am two nights in a row.
You sound great Trex, thank you. And now I’m all teary and Sam the Cat can’t figure out why I’m covering his furry little brow with kisses.
Oh, of course. Just like Athens is in Georgia. A blue dot in a vast blood-colored wasteland.
A real person singing a real song without the “magic” of the studio…I am sorry I missed the tours.
TRex @ 41
that sneak peak we lln pups got last nite was around midnight ca time
persiflage @ 42
Kiss him once for me!
persi, your Sam and my Callie are both now thinking “wtf?!” ;-)
TRex @ 43
So your coming? Great!
;)
And that’s 3:00am my time.
I can’t think when the last time I was too sleepy to eat dessert was.
I’m turning in. Thanks for the laughs and the support tonight everyone, and thanks TRex for the song and fucking spot on snark. *plink*.
I hope you will sing some more for us….
G’nite.

dang, quoted me before i edited to fix that horrible sentence structure
Nite, Laura!
TexBetsy @ 51
I’m taking it out of her allowance *g*

Suzanne @ 45
It was fun. TRex sweating it out, newtonusr working his magic, TRex worrying, newtonusr telling him to calm down. Dang, it was a workout for all of us on this side of the tubes too! But, VICTORY!!
TRex @ 46
I did and I gave one to Gemma “You Can’t Touch This” Cat. She doesn’t like being picked up or cuddled but she accepted the kiss with great dignity.
TRex @ 43
It isn’t Texas that you need to worry about; it is Al and MS. Every time that I drive in MS, it make my skin crawl. I always think of Cheney, Goodman and Schwerner.
I know that look.
It’s sort of, “I accept your benediction. Now, leave me. I must ponder how best to kill you in your sleep.”
But of course, they fall asleep and forget their plotting by the time they wake up.
kitty love
thank you trex that was beautiful
TRex @ 60
Or so they let YOU think!
Suzanne @ 53
never end a sentence with a proposition
LoudounLib @ 47
Sam is wise to the ways of hoomins. He just loves to be cuddled and, if he feels he’s short on kisses he walks up to me and gently butts my mouth with the top of his head. He loves his kisses. Of course, if he doesn’t get what he wants, the head-butting gets more vigorous. Which would be OK if he was normal-size kitty but he weighs 18 pounds. That’s a lot of boof behind those butts.

Or just don’t be like Bob Allen and end your proposition with a sentence.
Suzanne @ 61
So great…love it.
TRex @ 68

TRex @ 60
Exactly. “I forgive your intrusion into my personal space as a gesture of affection. Kindly back off now before I shows you my Miracle Claws – they slice, they dice, the…..zzzzzzzz”
you guys are making me feel guilty leaving Miss Dog with the puppy sitter …. dang it is too late for a “hows things” update…. of course she might be now too spoiled to live with when I get home…
punaise @ 70
Is that a bilingual proposition? Or would that be “touchez”?
*still dabbing eyes* Trex, thanks so much for this post, and you did a beautiful job.
Good night all!

Well, the first nasty post about my song has already appeared on technorati, which has to be some kind of record. (And no, I’m not telling you where.)
Expect the hate to metastasize throughout the right wing blogosphere with blinding speed.

forkers (spitting)
Well done, T. Very well done.
so sorry for poppy’s loss. i know that losing a pet is like losing a family member.
we lost one of our little cockatiel birds a couple of months ago (the sweetest one). i wrote about it here.
squiggles (my bird) was a happy little girl that always was excited to be with people, and especially loved it when my wife would give her part of whatever dinner she was cooking up for me on a given night.
ironically, we had taken all our other birds to the vets several times, but squiggles was always healthy, perky and happy. then suddenly one morning she fell to the bottom of the cage, unable to stand. she died the next morning.
at least we know she had a happy life.
TexBetsy @ 40
yer invited TRex for the winter gathering of the pups at my place. no date set yet. and YOUR VOICE IS BEAUTIFUL. i love listening to you sing. and now that newtonsur’s shown you how, (hint, hint, hint)….
katymine @ 31
Aw, shucks, katy.
It was fun making ‘em. Couldn’t help myself…
But they’re Schnauzers. The shop didn’t have a poodle cookie cutter. But if anyone finds one, I’m willing to change over!
And it was great to meet RBG, Cujo and Thingscomeundone on Saturday. What a blast. We WILL do it again. I’m thinking after the holidays, for sure!

So …. I will be having a discogram to see where exactly the damage to my spine is, what’s on the chord and what’s not bothering it, etc.
My best friend wants me to wear platform shoes and sparkly pants to the neuro clinic. Sound good?
Oh, skippy, that’s so sad.
Well, you have a new angel fluttering around your head, one that didn’t take weeks to train on the whole having-wings thing.
burnspbesq @ 79
yes! as a longtime P. Gabriel fan, I like your interpretation of that very emotional song. your voice sounds great.
TexBetsy @ 85
but the surgeon thinks the surgery will work?
Pants, okay, but not the platforms. A friend of mine broke her ankle during that last big platform sole revival.
“Oh, my god!” I said when she showed up at work on crutches, “What happened to you?”
“Girl,” she said, “I fell off my goddamn pumps.”
Hate when that happens.
Lovely Trex, and my darling Elvis (aged 17) is tucked in beside us, old orange shorthair wildman. He is so thin now, and your tribute makes me weepy.
Suzanne @ 88
yes. they just don’t know if they’re operating on one disc or two
TRex @ 89
platform shoes shudda come with a warning. was i evah glad when they went outta fashion
from my friend Mags:
TRex @ 76
I can’t imagine why, just because you’re the Undisputed King of Snark AND you can sing so well. What could they possibly be annoyed, unhappy and jealous. Oh, that’s right, they can’t do either of these things!

Chrysler, Going Green, To Offer Two suvs With Hybrid Engines
CNNMoney.com – 43 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES -(Dow Jones)- Chrysler LLC is finally jumping into the hybrid market with two sport-utility vehicles, as it looks to deepen its product lineup while defending its customer base by offering gasoline-conscious buyers more fuel-efficient …
They will never manage to get laid because somebody loves their work.

A gentleman never macks and tells.
But, uh, yes.
;-)
Suzanne @ 92
Well, some of us are only statuesque on the inside. I loved platforms.
TRex @ 102
I’m glad to hear that there are more fringe benefits to your blogging than just our adoration.
OK, TRex, I’m just driving by, but I do want to say that I am glad I threw momney into the fund, first, because it seemed like the right thing to do, and second, because it should put to rest any nervousness you have about putting voice to tape.
That is just special, and I mean it in a good way.
What took them so long?
persi, i was born with weak ankles and had to wear corrective shoes until i was 6. those danged platform shoes were friggin dangerous for me – i twisted so many ankles. i was lucky i didn’t break one.
i loved my work boots because of the extra ankle support – always handy in case one needs to run
persiflage @ 104
And why do you think he wants to visit all the TX firepups?
Say, you can hold a tune…Sweet, TRex.

TRex, I caught this very late last night and loved it. It made me cry. And it’s a beautiful recording. Imperfect, but achingly genuine. Something else the haters know nothing about.
So keep singing and snarking, o mighty therapod. You’re worth a million of the haters.

While I’m mainly a luker at this site, I must say I’m sorry for your loss. I have a little friend named Petey who makes up for the children I don’t have, and he’s my best friend bar none. He never complains and is always willing to give Love. My Heart goes out to you and yours. Peace.

I gave up running in 1979 when, despite my heroic efforts, my bus pulled away just as I got there. I know what you mean about the platforms. At barely 5 foot tall, I embraced them. Of course, every body else got taller too. Now I pass by even quite small heels. I’m over 50, I deserve comfortable shoes.
lurk no more, A. Richard. always room for a new voice.

Painful shoes=bad decision.
TexBetsy @ 113
would you prefer the pink sort-of-a boa or the golden brown sort-of-a boa? they’re right by the front door easy to reach.

I know that now. I lacked that wisdom when I was young, stupid and trying to be fashionable. Fortunately, I did no real damage. I don’t even think I fell off my platforms either but I knew plenty of girls that did.
burnspbesq @ 132
Shocking…
According to Senate testimony and Senator Whitehouse specifically, actions taken by DOJ lawyers, while not acting as lawyers but administratively, are always investigated by the Office of the Inspector General, whose reports are usually made public, as opposed to investigations by OPR, which are held private.
Thanks burns.
trex, these are my new favorite shoes.
I also have these in gold.

ooooh! my pink one is so plain (no cat attached).
Beautiful, TRex.
Please sing more.

MWAH. TRex, you are awesome. I don’t care for Gabriel at all, but your voice i really like. (sniffles a bit) i think i will have to download it when available, Twitchers needs a song like this.
Pun, the next morning i saw the lovely pic of Louis you linked for Twitch. What awesome legs Louis has!
Nite, Tex and TRex! I shall join them, the turkey has taken over… Aloha Oe!!!
katymine @ 146
I was lucky then. Looking back, I can’t imagine what motivated people taller than me to wear them, other than relentless demand of fashion, conformity and a dollop of stupidity. They sure made me feel tall, though.

Something really strange happened the other day. I was sitting here and I had Sam the cat on my lap. I was reading comments from a thread and I told Sam about Twitchy-Tail and showed him the photo. As usual he seemed nonplussed (OK, I was reading it aloud, I don’t know that Sam understood). Last night, in our back yard, I stopped to look at the stars. As always, Sam stood beside me and, when I looked down, he was twitching his tail. I mean, really twitching, something I’ve never seen him do in the 6 years I’ve owned him.
Now maybe he does it all the time and I just never noticed before but it could be, should you choose to interpret it that way, his salute to a brother-in-paws.
persiflage @ 164
i choose to interpret it that way, i am so pleased you shared. I will tell Twitchy-Tail tomorrow (he’s currently living at my daughter & grandsons’s house) when i pick him up for his alternative healing … he’s going to get an ion cleanse footbath. Should be interesting, he does love water.
what does Sam the Cat look like?
TRex–
Always love your stuff. Awake from bad dreams and not-so-great waking. Your voice is fine, as is your kitty tribute. We must hope and trust that God is listening. I just went to a wake on Friday, a funeral today. And I must seriously Change or Die. I pray for them all; please, Firepups, pray for me. I need it.
Thanks, all y’all.
My cat died last Halloween of a kidney problem they never quite were able to diagnose. It’s awful losing a friend, but at least William and Poppy had some time together, thanks to folks here (I wasn’t one of them).
On a completely unrelated note, it looks like someone in the House wants to act like a political opposition. The House Subcommittee on National Security and Foreign Affairs has been holding hearings on why attacking Iran might idea. Part 3 is scheduled for tomorrow. SusanUnPC at NQ asked us to disseminate, so this is me disseminating.

{{{{{ Lyssa }}}}} change is possible. I would have died years ago if i had not drastically changed my life. Here i am, happier and healthier than i would have believed possible. The Lake is a caring place. Delurk more often.
Lyssa,
Prayers for you, and hugs.
Cujo359 @ 167
condolences on your kitty. It’s never easy.
thanks for the info, looks like something you should mention in threads again tomorrow.
Sam the Cat is a big 18 pound Ragdoll. I don’t have a photo but if you go here and scroll down to Ben Nevis the Cat, he’s almost identical to Sam.
Lyssa @ 166
change of any kind requires courage. prayers and positive thoughts that you find your courage within you
well Firepups, Twitchy’s brother Bill the Cat is demanding that i go to bed so i can perform my proper function of large heating-pad for cat. Plus i need to get up to take TwitchyTail for his healing treatment.
Sweet, healing dreams to all!
G’night ndfg, give Twitchy a hug from me!
Lyssa @ 166
I don’t do prayer, I’m afraid, but hope for the best for you. As NDFG says, come by more often.
Goodnight NDFG and Twitchy.
persiflage @ 174
will do! Had to check the linky before heading off, what a big, huggy, darling!
What a beautiful song and your voice is fabulous. It hurts my eyes when I cry…it is from Sjogrens. Trex, I always love the music you put with your post…..always….such good taste!
Becky
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 177
That’s ma boy!
ok, that’s it for this tired firepup tonight. g’nite all
My condolences, TRex. I know what its like to lose a long-time pet. Expect to grieve. Let it happen. Perhaps a suitable memorial service will help achieve some closure.
Bob in HI
Some cats get to you like that. When they do, losing them hurts like hell.
That’s a lovely tribute, TRex, I like your singing. Sorry for Poppy’s loss.
Rest well, William.
Trex, nice job. Both singing and with the video. What a beautiful send off for William!

The AJC has photos of the service posted on line. It was very enlightening.
Hey JPL.
For some reason, when I go to the AJC site, Firefox locks up…
MR. Bill @ 187
You might be lucky because viewing the pics could be dangerous to your mental health.
” And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”-Matthew 6, 5-8
IMO, the entire service was sacrilegious. The uncontrolled building and clear cutting that has been going on is man made. In fact the weather changes will only be more apparent with global warming. The prayer service should have included the words “Dear God, Please forgive us for destroying the planet”
Good morning, pups. It’s MoDo and Friedman. MoDo’s column is titled “Should Hillary Pretend to Be a Flight Attendant?” She says that stories have been popping up that suggest that evolution is moving forward in a circuitous route. Mr. Friedman says President Bush squandered a historic opportunity to put America on a radically different energy course after 9/11. Well, that’s not the only thing he squandered…

All the warming beverages are ready, and I’ve got toasted Thomas’ English muffins today. It looks like Gov. Sonny prayed up a few clouds, but no rain. Have a good day.

Well, I remember the droughts in the ’80s, when hydrologist and planners said, ‘we have to address the water issues, because a metro Atlanta of 4 million is not sustainable’.
Instead we bulldozed our way forward. IMHO, the reason GA. is so very conservative is that the royal road to riches was developing the land. The recent gutting of trout stream setbacks and wetland preservation (already weak, and weakly enforced) underscore what the deal is.
Good mroning Marion.
Hi, MR. Bill. Any rain up your way?
Scattered sprinkles, not measurable..
Good morning pups!
Not a drop here, but maybe scattered showers tomorrow.
HEy egregious.
I gotta get moving here, and see why the sons aren’t up for school yet.
Would love to stay put today..
Oh my. Just listened to your video, TRex. That’s just beautiful. Honey, you got to sing for us more often.
Not a drop of rain in Roswell but a chance of showers tonight. Mr. Bill, What I really wanted the gov. to say at the prayer service was Dear God Even though we f**ked up so much it’s now up to you to fix it. Your response was better “Well, I remember the droughts in the ’80s, when hydrologist and planners said, ‘we have to address the water issues, because a metro Atlanta of 4 million is not sustainable’.
Instead we bulldozed our way forward. IMHO, the reason GA. is so very conservative is that the royal road to riches was developing the land. The recent gutting of trout stream setbacks and wetland preservation (already weak, and weakly enforced) underscore what the deal is.”

Morning Selise. How did you sleep?
MR. Bill @ 198
Hey back atcha MR. Bill. Give those little ones an extra hug, they’ll be on their own all too soon. [26, 24, 20 here]
Good Morning, everyone! There was a great LTTE in our paper, the Austin American Statesman this Morning:
“My role in democracy
I don’t get to vote on when or how we bring our troops home from Iraq. I don’t get to vote on whether we torture people.
I don’t get to vote on whether the government can tap my phone or search my home without a warrant. I don’t get to vote on whether a citizen can be thrown into prison without a trial.
I don’t get to vote on whether the president will start war with Iran.
I do get to vote on whether or not we abolish the office of inspector of hides. Yay, democracy!”
I thought this person nailed it. We here in Texas recently had a the opportunity to vote on a State Constitutional Amendment to eliminate the long vacant office of the Inspector of Hides and Brands.
egregious @ 203
I got two 16 year olds, neither one little (one over 6′)..And the daughter (23) is in this weekend, pissing and moaning over the reports she must write..
HEy selise…
Y’all go good, or good at it. I gotta go.
Good morning all.
Al Jazeera English TV is running the Ds higher-cost-of-war story as it’s news lead, with FBI investigation of Blackwater the second story. Having listened to it for awhile since the NYT op-ed telling us we should, I find it’s one of the best news sources around.http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/1EBB4C7F-7F2E-4257-A04C-56678862E31A.htm
Have a good day all!
It’s not fair to make someone cry this early in the morning. Put me right back with my sweet little Beauty who for 14 years slept on my chest and woke me with a gentle paw on my cheek everyday and the day I let her go to rest. I honestly think she taught me how to accept anothers unconditional love again after my discharge from Uncle Sugars Army. I’m so very sorry for your loss but so happy for the time you had with William.
Pretty damn good singing for a therapod. Your voice reminds me of Elton John’s a little bit and that singer from A-ha. Can you do a cover of Take On Me?
Very sorry about, William. :-(

Good morning. I always wondered what the fundamentalists, who believe in literal interpretation, don’t understand about this and the “render unto Caesar…” passage.
Great tune- thanks.
(And singing was alright, so rest assured. We go to sing with the voice we have, not the voice we wish we had…. ;} I for one reserve my voice for driving and sing show tunes in the voice of Elmer Fudd or a crazed robot.)

Thanks Trex. Loved it. There goes my mascara.
TRex you have a wonderful voice. Just had very sad news about my sister’s health, so I need to drink deeply right now. Thank you for that lovely song. Please keep recording for us.

She was hospitalized last week with what the docs thought was leukemia and pneumonia but now say is lung cancer. The mass is atypical, though, and they had some trouble with the diagnosis, even with a needle biopsy. We have been researching over the internet (thank the gods for the internet) and have found a condition that is often misdiagnosed as lung cancer and seems to share many of the same characteristics as her symptoms, Wegener’s Granulomatosis, and have faxed the info to her medical team. We are hopeful that they will do a few additional tests to at least rule this out. Thank you for your concern. We are a very close family and she will have lots of support, whatever the final diagnosis and the path from here.

That’s a heavy load for your family. We’ll be thinking about you.

Thanks again for your kind thoughts.
I’ve had my moment, too. Years ago, our house rabbit, a Netherlands dwarf called Pussywillow, died in my lap after 10 years with us. She wasn’t demonstrative but always would lean against you when in contact. Who could think you could cry over a lousy rabbit? Thanks Trex, for the message and the song.

With tears and sympathy… we have all been there with our beloved furry friends who are just “people with fur”.
Take care of yourself as you go thru the days to follow. Reach out to close friends and family – thanks for your courage in sharing with all today.
Cried through the whole thing and won’t stop for a while yet. My condolences. You sound great. Nicely done.
Please accept my heart-felt sympathy!
Shit. You made me cry at work. Our home lost a dear, dear buddy too last month. Grover was 17 years old and had been Christine’s best friend and constant shadow for almost half her life.
Then you had to go and sing one of my favorite, saddest, most upsetting songs ever. So glad I have a private office so noone could hear my off-key, gravel-voiced conterpoint.
Was just able to listen and watch the pictures again without breaking down. How very, very sad beautiful, kinda like life. Like the song in Fiddler on the roof says…”laden with happyness…and tears.”
That was good music, loved it.
