The key to dealing with environmental problems like an oil spill is planning, coordination and effective execution. Say the monks in training clean up the beach by rolling up the oil soaked sand and store it in garbage bags. If the oil floating in the water hasnt been cleaned up, the newly exposed clean sand will now be recontaminated by the oil from the water. Its like washing a car. You clean and rinse from the tom down. If you dont you just dirty up the place you just cleaned.

Also, crude oil has a significant amount of benzene in it. My dad worked in an oil field for 2 summers when he was in college. When he died of AML leukemia the doc said that AML was closely linked to benzene exposure. No one else in my family ever had cancer. Twenty years after the exposure it took him 8 months to die. Thats why the modern method is to let professionals cleanup things like this.

Probably (in part) because it is hazardous. (They don’t want lawsuits, yannow.) Well, then — you ask — why don’t they get government officials to do the clean-up? Oh yeah! There aren’t enough anymore! I know! How about the Army and National Guard? Oops! They’re in Iraq.

What a mess Bush and the GOP have made of this country.

There are several types of crude oil types. One of them is class A. Class A crude oil may be toxic to humans, fish, birds etc…

Would the government be negligent if they allowed people to place themselves into harms way? I believe so and I believe the families of those who pass away (get ill) from “helping” would think so as well.

I would imagine if the person had gone through specific training, had the gear and ability to dispose of the hazardous material it would be OK.

Which brings to mind, what are they (average citizens) doing with the oil once they collect it? Bring it to the gas station? Hmm…

I applaud people for attempting to help, but in this case it would be best to let the “professionals” do the job. If you do want to help check with the local ASPCA and see if they could put you to work.

Volunteerism is a great thing, but we need to make sure that we don’t blindly put ourselves into harms way.

Check it out and Google crude oil when you get a chance, see how dangerous of a substance this is.

Jello didn’t live in California when Ronnie was Governor…if he had he would have quickly learned that Jerry Brown was a moonbeam while Reagan was toxic bat’s piss.
