Remember our Veterans.
Please let’s not forget them, including those newly maimed every day by the war criminals who’ve seized our government.

dang, missed …
wow, a late late zed ;-)
hola! epu’d… pb, burns – you get your emails?
hello again
Teddy – I love this movie.
A day to remember those who served – and those too chickenshit scared to serve starting with fearless leader and his dick.
Veterans, need all the support we can muster, Teddy…
Hi Teddy, your picture from yearlykos was the most shown picture at my firepup meetings *g*
pretty puppies for LooHoo.
Just changed my facebook profile pic.
hey katy, liked the FirePupMeetUp pics you posted. Thanks!

Ooh, nice!
For Veterans Day:
I’m the only person with a current published concert band arrangement of Ballad of the Green Berets, but for snarkiness, this is the one for me!
CD @ 15
thank you very much
oh burnsie, i like that very much but i can’t outshine the bride yanno (i have a blue silk dress very much like that but with the plunging neckline in the front)
OldCoastie @ 4
I got the list from Deborah, thanks. Haven’t received anything from you, I don’t think.
You could try to re-send to “paulburns3 AT mac DOT com.”
thingscomeundone said he might come and I was thinking of it too but still need to figure out the logistics
OldCoastie @ 9
Where do the humans sleep, I wonder?
Joan Blondell was luminous in that movie. I don’t think it’s her singing that song, though.
‘33 is my favorite Golddiggers. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard Ginger Rogers sing “You’re In the Money” in Pig Latin.
OldCoastie @ 9
I’m guessing the one in front was airplaning earlier??
katymine @ 21
sweet… i’ve got my fingers and toes crossed ya’ll can make it
Teddy, your LateNight on Deborah Howell is a masterpiece. Thank you.

Etta Moten is also uncredited in the movie, and amazing

People always ask me at the grocery store who Howard Shanker is — his button’s still attached to my YKos bag I shop with.
‘night, Tex – sleep well.
OldCoastie @ 9
Beautiful! Those two are looking for the action.
Thanks for the tuna melt, Betsy. It was huge!
ET, I’m 18 hours ahead of you which means your radio show will conveniently be in the early evening for me. I’ll be here barracking for you.
OldCoastie @ 35

Do you do agility with them?
newdealfarmgrrrlll @ 11
I couldn’t find them…

Those are some big happy dogs!
Ole Dick-o-Lantern had such a warm glow back on Halloween, but his rabid warmongering has him foaming at the mouth and, frankly, looking a bit worse for wear.
(props to The New Yorker cover artist for the original inspiration)
sleep well when you do turn in pb
TeddySanFran @ 39
That is real easy… Howard Shanker is the ONLY anti-Iraq war, pro-choice environmentalist running for AZ CD-01 to so that dirty rotten Rick Renze can retire before he goes to live in the pokie

Night, Tex! Painfree & restful sleep wishes being sent your way *whifftt*
The big guy and I used to do some agility (mostly because he was the naughtiest puppy on the planet and NEEDED a challenge)… but, we’ve aged and mellowed and now don’t have to aggravate ourselves with that little activity.
Big, they are, Teddy… and yes, and lead very well-entertained lives (because its fun to see them smile!)
katymine @ 58
By the way, Ma’am, how did it go with your eldest learning of your ordeal, or was it your youngest?
Ed*ard Teller @ 18
My students love to sing The Green Beret after the flag salute. (I still teach the patriotic songs even though it is painful these days). They have chopsticks and get to do the drumming part, so it’s a fav.

okay, eyelids droopin’ shut! i’ll see y’all tomorrow. been a busy weekend for me :-P
punaise @ 59
Up here, that would be snow. But, where you are, I take it to be more deserving of Deadeye – mold.
CTuttle… the long and the short of that story was that poor Elmore was awarded that lovely job of telling my oldest after I went to hell medically speaking. Been trying to repay that “favor” since then *g*…
Elmore treated me to several lovely dinners here in Seattle…. Lola’s being the latest, Delila’s Lounge across the street was superb… really appreciate a man who spoils me *g*
persiflage @ 57
Dang, Persi, I like ‘em all, big and small… *g*
Ed*ard Teller @ 66
I was aiming for slimier and greener, but Mother Nature took over.
persiflage @ 57
thanks, Persi! I think they are fun to look at and both are characters in their own right…
ET, that is a fine Veterans Day post you have up over at your place.
katymine @ 67
At least you’re able to enjoy it, and will continue to enjoy… *g*
punaise @ 59
Never make the jack-o-lantern too early…
I need to get in early tomorrow — it’s my only day in the office this week — so I shall be signing off.
Good night, all. Pleasant dreams. I think I’ll recycle the Cheney dream from the other night; that was pleasant indeed.
g’nite burns (and thanks for the compliment)
CTuttle @ 72
THAT is exactly my though…
every second is precious. I seem not to have much patience with those who get their “panties” in a twist over something that I consider trivial.
Suzanne @ 71
Thank you kindly. TSF – thanks for the link on the Ted/Ben Stevens article downstairs. I’m getting ready for usavstedstevens.blogspot.com…
Ed*ard Teller @ 66
Still, it’s really just a pumpkin. Hard to root for mold here.
CTuttle @ 68
I like dogs but I live with cats. Some dogs I just adore. My hairdresser used to bring his ancient poodle to work. When I had my hair coloured and had to sit for 30 minutes, old Coco would come over and sit in my lap. Coco went to heaven a few years ago but I still miss him.

Thanks for getting us all together while you were in Seattle. I enjoyed finally meeting some of the folks I’ve been corresponding with for so long.
now your family is all reassured by laying eyes and hugs on ya, katymine, where are ya headed next?
C&L’s late night is Bob Dylan and Bette Midler. Coolio!
Suzanne @ 89
Tomorrow will be MNF (hey the crew put me as “Assistant Chief” and have a pass to the game) and will see my kid and granddaughters in the afternoon. Tuesday will be Elmore and I traditional brunch at a French restaurant at Pikes Market (4 years in a row) and then the ferry to Bremerton then back to Portland. Phoenix on Thursday and surgeon appointment on Friday…. busy busy…. will see about flying into San Jose and SF meetup if Miss Dog is still talking to me…
Dear god. Also from C&L, gannon tries to become legitimate.
When I learned of the fake news conference, I expected that the characterization of Jeff Gannon as a “phony reporter” would be revived. Liberal media activist Keith Olbermann noted it on his nightly train wreck of a talk show and the lefties of the blogosphere dutifully repeated it ad nauseum. This is a classic case of how a lie becomes reality, since the record proves otherwise. I was as real as a reporter gets, writing over 500 articles as a White House correspondent, a job that Secret Service records indicate I actually showed up for more than 200 times over the course of two years. The veracity of my work as a reporter has never been successfully challenged.
Further, in 2006 – a year after my supposed exposure as a “phony reporter” – my peers accepted me into the National Press Club, the most prestigious association of professional journalists in the world. My book about the media will be featured at the National Press Club’s 30th annual book fair on November 1. Not bad for a “fake, fraud and phony.”

My bad habit is greeting the pets before the owners. It may seem rude but the animals seem so much more pleased to see me.
kewl, katymine – let me know via either f/b or my email
this just a checkup with the surgeon friday?
The surgeon appointment may be my release back to work or just monitor post surgery.
Have all the next set of tests scheduled Dec 3th… Hey did I tell you guys that my hospital stay alone was running $52K, gee glad I have insurance!
katymine @ 95

TeddySanFran @ 100
LOL!
But not too far off, sadly.
TeddySanFran @ 100
Now don’t you go pulling my leg, Edward SanFrancisco! My memory was that it was about a week. $52,000 a week? You could probably stay in that 7-star hotel in Dubai for that.
let’s see… 52k? that’s about 5 days, I’d guess…
$52K for 6 days…. excluding surgeon, physician’s, anesthesia fees BUT guess what the contracted PPO rate that was paid on that $52K? ready…. $13,400 was the payout!
I have a YouTube gift for you Teddy, here
katymine @ 106
are they gonna try to stick you with the difference?
katymine @ 106
Scandalous!
TeddySanFran @ 100
Best one all day. Last December they charged my insurance company $8,000.00 for me to spend 11 hours in a recovery room – plus all the other scores of thousands to do a rotator cuff op. Why do insurance companies put up with this crap?
katymine @ 106
Insurance payers subsidize the cash/non payers.
Suzanne @ 108
they will, but they shouldn’t…
the “retail” rate is amazing… I had to take a 10 minute ambulance ride to the hospital a couple years ago and that cost about 2000 bucks…
apparently saline drips are really very expensive.
Geez, and a friend of mine was quoted 5K per month for her mom with dementia to stay in a secure nursing home. One hour away in Mexico it’s $900.
Loo Hoo at 92,
I looked up his book on Amazon, because I wanted to see if Regnery was the publisher. Nope, it was iUniverse.
http://www.iuniverse.com/
Vanity press, it’s a self-publishing outfit.
Suzanne @ 108
No, when you have a PPO there is a contract between the insurance & hospital to pay X amount for the stay. I have to pay the remaining deductible and co-insurance (insurance pays 80% and I pay 20% up to a specified amount) so the hospital bills $52K, insurance pays $13,400 and my part is around $2000 but since the hospital was such a sh*t about it, it will be the last bill I do pay

No. It is in 10-pt helvetica and will be about 56 feet long. I’m almost done clipping the top and bottom margins off the 10 1/2 x 8 sheets. I’d be further along, but, but – it has snowed 3 inches since I came in my shop!

US strike on Iran ‘not being prepared’
By Demetri Sevastopulo, Daniel Dombey and Andrew Ward in Washington
updated 29 minutes ago
The Pentagon is not preparing a pre-emptive attack on Iran in spite of an increase in bellicose rhetoric from Washington, according to senior officers.
Admiral William Fallon, head of Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East, told the Financial Times that while dealing with Iran was a “challenge”, a strike was not “in the offing”.
“None of this is helped by the continuing stories that just keep going around and around and around that any day now there will be another war which is just not where we want to go,” he said.
“Getting Iranian behaviour to change and finding ways to get them to come to their senses and do that is the real objective. Attacking them as a means to get to that spot strikes me as being not the first choice in my book.”
Adm Fallon did not rule out the possibility of a strike at some point. But his comments served as a shot across the bows of hawks who are arguing for imminent action. They also echoed the views of the senior brass that military action is currently unnecessary, and should only be considered as an absolute last resort.

Dang, ya’ll have some high expectations…
“The fact of the matter is, we all want to bribe a politician,” said Mr. Whitekeys, an Anchorage entertainer whose long-running political cabaret is called the Whale Fat Follies. “We all thought it’d take a Mercedes or a Porsche. Nobody knew you could buy a politician for the cost of a used riding lawn mower.”

I was gonna try to run the hearing you made with Nance on torture the other day and got this message:
Safari can’t open page.
Error: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain: – 1005)
If you remember, I’m the one on dial-up with a Mac who was hoping to at least be able to run audio of the nice stuff you provide. Got *any* idea of what I might be doing wrong? I do have Firefox but know even less about what’s happening with it than I do with Safari. Thanks for any feedback when you have time.
Waccamaw @ 164
Waccamaw, did it start downloading at all – and then fail? or did you get the error msg immediately?
Selise,
I left you a message #181 in the last thread (late night) re:Phelps.
selise -
Oh, shoot! Given the deteriorating condition of my brain cells, “I don’t recall”. *g*
O.K. I just went there again….the blue started moving thru your URL but didn’t finish before the message flag popped up. Does that answer
did it start downloading at all – and then fail? or did you get the error msg immediately?
BTW – I’ve been meaning to tell you just how much I love the “banner” (if that’s what it’s called) at the top of your site.
Waterboarding is just one of several ways to not leave visible wounds.
AQ Suspect Tortured, Starved, Abandoned…Dies
Karachi businessman Saud Memon became a key suspect because he owned a nursery where (Daniel) Pearl had been held captive. He was “in a lot of the rooms where important things were being discussed,” an unnamed senior US law enforcement official said. “He knew senior Al-Qaeda people, and was moving equipment and supplies.” Interrogation adduced information that Memon may have been helping Al-Qaeda develop anthrax strains.
Memon was interrogated by both US and Pakistani intelligence services. Pakistani human rights groups have accused ISI of torturing Memon. But an unidentified Pakistani law enforcement official said Memon was in poor shape by the time the US returned him to Pakistani custody.
The businessman was then dumped in front of his Karachi home broken and emaciated, weighing just 80 pounds (36 kilograms)… he died from what was described as complications from meningitis and TB.
Nice folks, our government. I wonder how he acquired meningitis and why they didn’t bother to treat it with antibiotics????
But let me just say that meningitis may develop in response to infectious agents, physical injury, cancer, or certain drugs.
SunnyNobility @ 166
wow, that paints a different picture. thank you! saw also burns’ link to balkinization. that was also helpful to my thinking.
all this doesn’t change that i still despise phelps and his gang.
Waccamaw @ 167
was the failure when you were trying to load the page, or download the audio file?
selise @ 170
Happened when I clicked on Podcast 38.6MB mp3.
Good morning pups!
Special greetings and thanks to all who have served in our military, past and present. Navy family here.
Good morning from L.A. Just back from a business trip, & what a moving post & thread to read first thing this a.m. Wonderful clip from Golddiggers, TSF.
Here’s another scene worth watching from IMO one of the best films dealing w/coming home from a war:
Aircraft Graveyard Scene- The Best Years of Our Lives
Waccamaw @ 167
thank you! i made it from this picture in fanuiel hall of (left to right) RevDeb, nina, Kathryn in MA, me and Prof Foland. in case you are curious what 5 firepups were doing there, here’s the dkos diary i wrote of our adventures.
the painting is “Webster’s Reply to Hayne” by George P.A. Healy.
Waccamaw @ 171
ahh. that will just attempt to load the file into your browser. instead try holding down the “option” key while you click on the “podcast” link. that will attempt to download the file to your desk top or some folder of your choice.
in case anyone is wondering…. today is a holiday and congress is not in session – so the weekly list of congressional hearings won’t be up until tomorrow morning (although i may get around to it sometime today).
yesterday, mary asked us for help in finding a transcript she was looking for. i think i found it and left a bunch of comments for her starting here.
if any of you see her today, will you let her know? thanks!
Waccamaw – if that doesn’t work, let me know – there are other things to try!
Good morning, pups. Roger Cohen is alone in the NYT today. He says America, and not just its front-line soldiers, needs to watch Al Jazeera to understand how the world has changed.
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and the biscuits are out of the oven. I finally had a chance to battle the grass in the flower bed in front of the house (it eschews the lawn in favor of the flower bed) and got my pansies in. On to the window boxes after work… Have a great day.
selise -
Tried that…. got a small Download popup saying “lost network connection”.
That’s a neat story about the picture. I’m feeling really bad here about monopolizing the thread with my ignorance in the tech stuff. If you prefer, will just wait ’til I have access to hte guru again who can maybe help with the problem. Thanks!
Good Morning all and thanks to Marion for the biscuits but this morning I’ll have to make do with yogurt and a banana.
Waccamaw @ 180
i bet you know one minds – at least i hope not because i’ve certainly used the late late (or even just the late) nite thread to get help from other people on everthing from trouble shooting hardware and configuration advice.
Hi, Marion -
Hmmmmm…pansies. What colors are you using? Some varieties have the most wonderfully subtle fragrance; love going to nurseries that have masses and just stand there and inhale.
selise @ 182
Definitely it’s ok to help each other with technical stuff as long as it’s pretty late in a thread and isnt a liveblog, special guest author, or book salon/blue am. This is how I eventually succeeded in learning how to put together working links. It wasn’t pretty.
I think the following song represents the “love” between our soldiers/veterans:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=JFWPeVfWB9o
They’re always the ones to carry each other when it’s all said and done.
Waccamaw @ 180
there are more options…. but we’re done with the really easy stuff.
do you use a laptop?
Waccamaw — Just “generic” pansies from the big box in the neighborhood, sold as “mixed variety” pansies. I do, however, insist that they have “faces,” except for the deep purple ones. Fragrant pansies? Hmmm… I’ll have to investigate that. They thrive all winter long here, only giving up when it starts to get too hot for their liking, usually around April.
Thanks, eg -
Some day I’m gonna drag out the document containing all the different directions people have provided here for how to give your own name to a linky.
That activity should produce a few laughable moments. *g*
selise -
Yup, laptop with trackpad but I do have a mouse available if that makes any difference. When I first got it I thought, “Ain’t no way I’m ever gonna get the hang of this dumb pad!” The day the mouse died it was either fish or cut bait. *g* Now the only time I hook it up is when the cursor gets the “quivers” and goes temporarily wonky.
marion -
OK – go stick your nose directly in one pansy of each color; some of them seem to have no fragrance at all but others are *very* noticeable. I haven’t determined if it’s the color that’s the tip-off or whether it’s specific to one special variety over another. One of these days, I’m gonna do something scientific with this theory. *g* Oh, and you might want to check out the different kinds not found at the big boxes.
I’ve kept several pots going until July/August but only with daily dead-heading and frequent watering. That’s eastern NC vs. you’re being further south and only feasible with small quantities.

right now call-ins on striking Iran
oh and
Good Morning!
I love Violets and Pansies and all the ones in between. Used to have a collection of different violets, love the fragrant ones!
CTuttle @ 157
I thought that these comments were even more interesting
~Retired General Anthony Zinni, a former Centcom commander, said the US military was “streteched too thin” to fight a protracted war with Iran.
~Retired Gen John Abizaid, who preceeded Adm Fallon, recently said the US should avoid a war with Iran, which would be “devasting (sic) for everybody”. He added that the US should do everything to prevent Iran getting a nuclear weapon, but said Washington could live with that outcome if it happened.
But almost ALL the Presidential candidates…certainly all the front-runners, claim that they will NOT allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. That they will act long before that to prevent it. No action, however depraved and destabilizing, is “off the table”.
Yet they aren’t honest enough to explain to the American people how we would succeed in a war against Iran, where some of the Gulf Emirates have between 1/3rd to 3/4’s of their population disenfranchised Shiites. Iran is four times as large as Iraq, and has an immense army. Besides uprisings in the Gulf monarchies that would result from an attack, Iran could fairly easily block the Straits of Hormuz…and likely sink or damage many US vessels through the use of submarines and mines; and shoulder-borne or other missiles fired from coastal sites. As good as the US anti-missile defenses are, even a few successes in the thousands that would be launched would take a heavy toll.

laptop – great!
next suggestion is see if it’s possible to bypass your dialup line.
i should have asked you how old it was (basically, does it have an airport card?)… and are you mobile? (don’t mean to ask personal questions – but not knowing you, i don’t know if you are home bound).
if you are mobile, do you know of a free wifi location like panera? if you’ll give me your general location, i’ll give you a url with a list of free wifi spots in your area.
it might just be easiest to buy a coffee at someplace with free wifi and do your downloads while sipping coffee.

It simply blows my mind the number of people in this country who scream, “Yeah, bomb Iran; that’ll take care of all our problems!”
It’s one of those, “What rock have you people been living under the last seven years?” moments. Interesting comments on the subject on the Washington Journal.

Bought it in 2002 or thereabouts and have no idea about the airport card. Mobile, yes. The wifi stuff spooks me out a lot…mainly b/c I don’t know anything about it or the possibility of other people hacking into *my* computer. Don’t know if there’s any software on it that would prevent that. Can see the guru at the end of the month to ask about the card and get a lesson on hooking into free wifi.
US strike on Iran ‘not being prepared’
I think this is an incredible quote, coming from the head of Central Command

Good morning.
How soon before Cheney takes Fallon to the woodshed?

He’s probably all ready got him out there!
when i use someone else’s wifi, i NEVER do any online shopping or anything that requires me to enter personal info (especially credit card number). for me, i think it’s ok for surfing and downloading files, but that’s a choice we all have to make for ourselves.
a couple of years ago, when my dad was sick, i was spending a lot of time in illinois with nothing more than slow dial up at home and nothing in the hospital. open wifi sites were very helpful. every morning i’d stop at a place for takeout breakfast and coffee – and while waiting for my food i’d download my email (and upload the emails i’d written while not connected to the internet) and a bunch of webpages (news, blogs, etc) to read while spending the day in my dad’s hospital room. if i didn’t have good internet connection at home, i think all my days would start with coffee somewhere with free wifi. *g*
there are a bunch of sites for finding free wifi – i don’t know which is best, but this is one i’ve used (and it seems pretty good)

I love pansies – even in “take a left at Siberia” garden, the ones under the bushes in the front (totally different Zone there because it is protected)sometimes will winter over and peep out in the spring once the snow packs up and leaves. Even with snow drops, etc. seeing those pansies always brings a smile to my face.

That’s a neat site….according to it, there’s only one free wifi about 15 miles away. Not terribly convenient for frequent use but doable.
Sounds like wifi helped save your sanity while sitting with your da in hospital.
Since I NEVER do anything on-line that involves money, that shouldn’t be a problem. Jane probably hates having to deal with my paper checks. *g*
“Getting Iranian behaviour to change and finding ways to get them to come to their senses and do that is the real objective. Attacking them as a means to get to that spot strikes me as being not the first choice in my book.”

Somebody by the name of Roger Cohen writes an op-ed in today’s NYT about how we should all watch Al Jazeera English and bemoaning the fact that so few cable companies carry the channel. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11…..ref=slogin
However, never once does he say that you can watch it online, let alone providing a link. What a jerk.

to see if you have an airport card:
1) click on the blue apple (top left of your screen) and select “about this mac”
2) click on the “more info” button
3) under network, select “airport card” and see what it says.
you’ll probably need your tech guru to help you set it up the first time (after the set up it is a snap). best would be if he’ll go with you to whatever free wifi spot you plan to use.
and there may be something closer that’s not listed…. for example, your local public library may have something, but limited to residents of the area.
even a neighbor might be willing to let you “borrow” theirs for a few minutes – before my neighbors got their computer and internet connection, the dad used to occassionally “borrow” mine. i even set up an account for him on my imac so he could use my computer while keeping all my stuff private. (these were the same neighbors who were taking care of my 5 cats for weeks while i was with my dad). but it wouldn’t be a big deal to help you out, since you are bringing your own computer… and if you already have the list put together of the files you want to download it should not take long.
good luck!
