In celebration of all the firepup meetups this month! I love this version, he is singing his heart out and the audience is feeding him.
We need each other. There is so much work to do and it seems so discouraging at times. We faced a huge disappointment this week with the Attorney General confirmation. People write in the comments about losing hope and not knowing what to do.
To those who are despondent I would hold up news of our victories. Jane and Matt raised a quick $100,000 for Donna Edwards which got the attention of the Washington Post.
In Virginia this week a predicted close race to eject Tom Davis’ wife succeeded 55-45 because of our get out the vote effort, and may in fact drive this very senior Congressman into early retirement; conservative/military Hampton Roads helped us vote in a Democratic State Senate; and it looks like our 13 electoral votes are no longer safe for the Republicans in ’08.
We lost the battle, not the war. Count on taking more hits and having more wounded as this goes on, and let’s take care of each other.

egregious!
Hi, eg.
Nearly zed, and now it’s off to bed. Good night all!
EG! can’t wait to see ya a week from today.
Relentless!!
Don’t back down!
has downstairs been told?
Has anyone seen the op-ed in the Sunday New York Times? They rip the Dems a new one over the Mukasey confirmation.
Hey, EG!!
Suzanne @ 6

egregious, did you see photos from the SoCal round-up?
Is newtonusr still around?
burnspbesq @ 14
Hi Burnsy!
Good evening dear friends. What did I miss?
I admire your attitude, egregious. I am not ready to give up, not by a long shot.
Went to a John Edwards organizational meeting today. Decided it was time to get serious and pick one of the top three, the one who comes closest to saying the things I think they should be saying.
I may go to Iowa next week to canvass.

Hey there. Looking forward to it.
Hey Tex Betsy,
So very slow, what is up? Lots of great off and on last thread…
Damn.
I got EPU’d.
That never happens to me.

Well I was out on a date. :)

Question for you:
Was looking at some quad-interface hard drives today, but the AirPort only has USB and Ethernet ports. Are there any adaptors out there that would enable one to connect such drive to the AirPort going from either the FW 800 or SATA port on the drive to the Ethernet port on the AirPort?
flounce back trex!

Hey, egregious. This song made me burst into tears the first time I heard it.
Sigh.
Brownies anyone?
well said.
We’ll fix their wagons. But it will take constant work.
TRex @ 29
Still does.
TexBetsy @ 30

U2 are awesome when I get down and out. Whenever I start to feel like it’s all futile and that I’m too tired to fight anymore, it always seems like I hear Sunday, Bloody Sunday in the car or something and get goosebumps all over.
I can’t believe the news today,
Wish I could close my eyes and make it go away,
How long?
How long must we sing this song?
I’m getting a little verklempt just typing the lyrics.

Wow. You’re really going for it. In the absence of a server between, defeating the whole point I believe, I can’t think of how. And 802.11g or n is fast, but unless your backups are midnight til 6 am, totally plausible I think, your bandwidth in the range of the wireless network would be nil.

TexBetsy @ 30
Heckuva job, Betsy!!! *g*
*DOINK!!*
You had a DATE tonight??!!
For the next five minutes at least, this is me hating you.
Squeeeeeeeee!!!! DETAILS!!
More, Betsy! What does he do and how did you meet him?
neurophius @ 41
Thank you! (deep bow)
Loo Hoo, I’ve been meaning to ask how things turned out with your daughter and the Halloween theft of her purse.
Trex, I love the SwiftKids for Truth videos.
OK, I see you noticed!
He works for IBM. professional-like. I’ve known him through my relig community for years but first I was going through a divorce and then he was. now we’re both past the “re-hash the marriage” crap.
we went out for chinese, then back to my house for brownies and tea. (texteen at his dad’s and cassie at a friend’s.) chatted, listened to music, that’s about it.
oh, and of course he is a dem, but much more the environmentalist type than the political activist type.
What’s he look like?
This is your brain on politics.
NYT
Is he rich?
(Let’s cut to the chase here.)
Yes, TexBetsy, we want details. *g*
Did you kiss him?
Oh, geez. OK. He’s a LOT more financially secure than I am. Owns a 3BR house and a Prius. For what that’s worth. 5 yrs older than I am.
He’s not tall. Medium to short, I guess. Reasonably good looking but not gorgeous or anything.
TexBetsy @ 39
And to think …. I once thought I could speak Mac.
Wait, Burns – Which Airport Extreme are you using?
neurophius @ 17
Wonderful idea – I’ve been thinking about making a detour to Iowa on my return trip home from WI the week before xmas.
No T. Hugged good night.
Nothing more, TRex. She isn’t drugged or anything. Just a lot poorer. She normally would have another two or three pairs of jeans by now, but instead she’s just paying her speeding ticket and saving her money.
Thanks for your concern. I have been keeping an extra sharp eye on the situation, cuz you made me wonder…
newtonusr @ 38
Actually, I have something completely different in mind. Storage has gotten so cheap that it is now possible for me to rebuild my iTunes library in lossless. I just hate having cables snaking across my desk when I can avoid it (stuck with one wired connection to an external drive, for Time Machine — would rather not have two).
What a wonderful post, egregious. I was just outside, it’s so warm and balmy tonight, gazing at the stars and listening to the river while thinking about our little lake of fire and dogs today. We swam with Naomi and called the fascists FASCISTS! And we were fortunate enough to take part in bringing the fight to Rahm Emmanuels home turf!
On top of that it finally sinks in, thanks to you.
This week Virginia turned Blue.
TexBetsy, he sounds like a good man. Is there a 2nd date planned?
Burns has all the cool toys. Peanutbutter was drooling over his Iphone.
Eureka Springs @ 60
Lot of hard work. Worth it.

OK, I’m i the middle of doing exactly the same thing, ripping everything to lossless encoded. And there’s a way. A great way.
In weird news ….

burnspbesq @ 67
I was late. Look here.
Good night, EG, and thanks. Sure wish I could join you guys next Saturday at Suz’ place…
Hey Egregious, love the last line, especially. Yes. We are all wounded.
You made me think about how the challenger in IA-4 who ran such a great race a year ago mysteriously dropped out. Word is that the DCCC wouldn’t step up. The incumbent is really vulnerable, but no one in the on-deck circle. WTF. I hate the DCCC. I take pleasure in telling their callers to buzz off and in ripping up their mailings.
Watched the JJ dinner on CSPAN. Ratings: Obama, Biden, Dodd, in that order. The rest: forgettable and pedestrian. I hope we can cough up a candidate who can win and then govern decently. Is that too much to ask? Your post matches my dark mood.
Sleep well egregious.
TRex, it was one date. I refuse to over-analyze every detail. He is kind. His eyes are kind.

Looks like I’ve got my work cut out.
This is what marriage is really all about “
He ordered one hamburger, one order of French fries and one drink. The old man unwrapped the plain hamburger and carefully cut it in half. He placed one half in front of his wife. He then carefully counted out the French fries, dividing them into two piles and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife.
He took a sip of the drink, his wife took a sip and then set the cup down between them. As he began to eat his few bites of hamburger, the people around them kept looking over and whispering. You could tell they were thinking, “That poor old couple – all they can afford is one meal for the two of them.”
As the man began to eat his fries a young man came to the table. He politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple. The old man said they were just fine – They were used to sharing everything.
The surrounding people noticed the little old lady hadn’t eaten a bite. She sat there watching her husband eat and occasionally taking turns sipping the drink.
Again the young man came over and begged them to let him buy another meal for them. This time the old woman said “No, thank you, we are used to sharing everything.”
As the old man finished and was wiping his face neatly with the napkin, the young man again came over to the little old lady who had yet to eat a single bite of food and asked “What is it you are waiting for?”
She answered

Bill Clinton Lunches With Leader Of The “Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy”
from Huff Po by The Huffington Post News Editors
Bill Clinton is never at a loss for company. When he’s not globe-trotting or charming audiences for as much as $400,000 a speech, he’s often schmoozing visitors in his suite of offices in Harlem. Last July, the former president sat down with a billionaire impressed with the William J. Clinton Foundation’s campaign against AIDS in Africa. The two men chatted amiably over lunch for more than two hours, and the visitor pledged to write Clinton’s foundation a generous check. But there was something unusual, if not plain weird, about the meeting. NEWSWEEK has learned that the billionaire so eager to endear himself to the former president was Richard Mellon Scaife–once the Clintons’ archenemy and best-known as the man behind a “vast, right-wing conspiracy” that Hillary Clinton said was out to destroy them.
Scaife was no run-of-the-mill Clinton hater. In the 1990s, the heir to the Mellon banking fortune contributed millions to efforts to dig up dirt on President Clinton. He backed the Clinton-bashing American Spectator magazine, whose muckrakers produced lurid stories about Clinton’s alleged financial improprieties and trysts. Scaife also financed a probe called the Arkansas Project that tried, among other things, to show that Clinton, while Arkansas governor, protected drug runners.

McCain’s Mom Goes After Romney
from Huff Po by The Huffington Post News Editors
John McCain’s 95-year-old mother, in a swipe at her son’s rival Mitt Romney, said Friday that Mormons were to blame for the scandal that rocked the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.
During an appearance on MSNBC, Roberta McCain laid out why her son, John, deserves to win the Republican presidential nomination. But in evaluating McCain’s primary rivals, she criticized Romney’s Mormon faith and his time in Salt Lake City.

Giuliani blames Clinton for overstretched military.
from Think Progress by Faiz
Rudy Giuliani faulted former President Bill Clinton for having weakened the American military. “Our military is too small to deal with the Islamic terrorism threats, but it really is too small to deter would-be aggressors to even think of challenging us. And that’s due to Bill Clinton,” he said. Steve Benen responds, “Does this make any sense? … Bush has stretched the military to the breaking point,” but acknowledging this would mean holding Bush “to account for his irresponsible policies. What to do? Blame Clinton of course.”

Regarding the “Fall” of Tom and Jeannemarie “Devo” Davis from Virginia politics. Some of it was inflicted by the Republican Party itself. Tom Davis was lusting after the Senate seat vacated by John Warner for decades…everything pointed to it. And then his own party decided that they were not going to have a Primary and would “decide” the candidate in the smoky back-rooms of the Party bosses (I guess Virginia was never influenced by the Progressive Movement?). That basically meant that Warners replacement would be the previous Republican Governor of the State, not Davis.
But Davis had some serious political baggage to tote. There are rumors that Davis and “Devo” were involved romantically long before he divorced his first wife, Peggy Davis, in 2003. Davis and “Devo” quickly announced their plans to unite in matrimony. Aides and friends won’t comment about the rumors of adultery, not even to deny them. There was something similar of Jeannemarie’s side. John and Jeannemarie Devolites filed for divorce in 2000 but remained united as parents. They both appeared together in court in 2002, when their 20 year old daughter, Ashley, was sentenced to a nine-year prison term for a series of armed robberies that ranged from Fairfax City, VA to New York. Jeannemarie Devolites said: “I think it’s a shame that all the members of the press that are here today do not have the common decency to show a family some privacy during a difficult time.”
Davis and Devolites are both Roman Catholics, and divorce is unacceptable to the Church. But, unlike in the days of Henry VIII excommunication is today only an option to those that don’t act to further the churches anti-contraception/anti-abortion views.

“It will be a blow to US intelligence and the Bush administration’s credibility” is a bit of a understatement, I think. If North Korea can prove their case, it’ll mean that the claims about the WMD aspirations of two out of three of the members of the “Axis of Evil” will have proven to be false. In fact, it’ll mean that the same tale–Administration claims that a country was altering aluminum tubes to make cetrifuge parts–will have proven false twice.
Add in the fact that Cheney has refused to allow the Intelligence Community publish an unclassified NIE debunking Administration claims about an imminent Iranian WMD threat, and we’re facing that the distinct possibility that the claimed threat of all three members of the “Axis of Evil” is false. The central narrative of this Administration–us against the rogue states–potentially false.
Nice.
One more detail. Note that Glenn Kessler, he of the Condi bio, got this scoop. At the least, this means State is telling us that the North Korea claims may be false. Is Condi getting weary of sustaining one after another WMD lie?

Yeah, very interesting. The Slate attributes it to the nasty divorce that he faces after getting caught with a mistress. They are a bit unclear as to why this caused Scaife to make his turnabout.
But they also point out that Scaife ordered his papers to publish editorials repudiating Bush, call him delusional, and demanding an immediate end to US troop deployments in Iraq.
So something is “up” and whether it means that Scaife is simply a wily businessman trying to curry favor with the “winners” over the next decade or so (or worse if he thinks the Republican Party is actually on the verge of “Whigging Out”), or if it is a real, heartfelt epiphany?
I looke to see if there is any evidence that he’s bankrolling any political candidates and I can’t find any contributions since the 2006 elections. So that’s odd. Or can anybody find some more up to date reports?
Jane, you’re an inspiration! Nice picket line pix.
TeddySanFran @ 177
Not sure if Shelden Spencer really challenged the incumbent Tom Latham in 2006. Latham won 57% – 43%. So maybe that’s why the DCCC has been wary. But if they actually withheld money during the 2006 election maybe THAT contributed to his not coming closer. Let’s say that he had gotten money and moved 4% of the voters. That would have made it 53%-47%…and I’m sure they’d be all over himto run again…and would fund him.
I hope that they aren’t discounting a candidate that they basically didn’t support and then say…he didn’t get closer on his own.
Loo Hoo. @ 117
sorry, Loo Hoo, i just got back. i’m in Germany, and the snow i went out into turned to rain but, no matter …….
c’ape, it would sure be nice if condi is rolling over and telling the what shit belongs to who to try to deflect as much of it off her as possible.
Loo Hoo. @ 199
That’s from the LA Times isn’t it?
I was saying several months back the assertions about the NK nuclear test seemed very odd…almost as if North Korea was trying to fake a test or that the test merely represented a nuclear trigger going off rather than a real fissionable device.
This report might back that up. NK was trying to look a great deal more threatening than they were, if it’s true. That would have made their negotiating position a lot more powerful, and they could “give up” facilities and processes that were actually quite nascent or useless in exchange for valuable concessions.

g’nite all.
this is dedicated to Ms Nancy Pelosi.
me, singing in bob dylan’s voice (no, really.):
Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child’s balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying.
Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool’s gold mouthpiece
The hollow horn plays wasted words
Proves to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying.
Temptation’s page flies out the door
You follow, find yourself at war
Watch waterfalls of pity roar
You feel to moan but unlike before
You discover
That you’d just be
One more person crying.
So don’t fear if you hear
A foreign sound to your ear
It’s alright, Ma, I’m only sighing.
As some warn victory, some downfall
Private reasons great or small
Can be seen in the eyes of those that call
To make all that should be killed to crawl
While others say don’t hate nothing at all
Except hatred.
Disillusioned words like bullets bark
As human gods aim for their mark
Made everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark
It’s easy to see without looking too far
That not much
Is really sacred.
While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have
To stand naked.
An’ though the rules of the road have been lodged
It’s only people’s games that you got to dodge
And it’s alright, Ma, I can make it.
Advertising signs that con you
Into thinking you’re the one
That can do what’s never been done
That can win what’s never been won
Meantime life outside goes on
All around you.
You lose yourself, you reappear
You suddenly find you got nothing to fear
Alone you stand with nobody near
When a trembling distant voice, unclear
Startles your sleeping ears to hear
That somebody thinks
They really found you.
A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit to satisfy
Insure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not fergit
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to.
Although the masters make the rules
For the wise men and the fools
I got nothing, Ma, to live up to.
For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despise their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Cultivate their flowers to be
Nothing more than something
They invest in.
While some on principles baptized
To strict party platform ties
Social clubs in drag disguise
Outsiders they can freely criticize
Tell nothing except who to idolize
And then say God bless him.
While one who sings with his tongue on fire
Gargles in the rat race choir
Bent out of shape from society’s pliers
Cares not to come up any higher
But rather get you down in the hole
That he’s in.
But I mean no harm nor put fault
On anyone that lives in a vault
But it’s alright, Ma, if I can’t please him.
Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn’t talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares
Propaganda, all is phony.
While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer’s pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death’s honesty
Won’t fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes
Must get lonely.
My eyes collide head-on with stuffed graveyards
False gods, I scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough
What else can you show me?
And if my thought-dreams could be seen
They’d probably put my head in a guillotine
But it’s alright, Ma, it’s life, and life only.
It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)
but
something is happening here and
you don’t know what it is,
do you,
Ms Pelosi?
i like this part
“While preachers preach of evil fates
Teachers teach that knowledge waits
Can lead to hundred-dollar plates
Goodness hides behind its gates
But even the president of the United States
Sometimes must have
To stand naked.”

newtonusr – if you’re still around, i see that you and burns were talking hard drives (what fun!) and considering the airport extreme base station…. i got one a few months ago when my old asante crapped out – even set up the 500 GB maxtor as an airport disk, but it was slow, slow, slow. might be ok for streaming itunes (i should check) but not for backups.
Hi folks, we need your help here in VA-01 congressional district. We have a special election December 11 to replace recently deceased Rep. Jo Ann Davis. We nominated Philip Forgit yesterday at our nominating convention. Philip is a decorated Iraq War veteran. He ran a great race in 2003 for VA-96 House of Delegates, losing a close race in a heavily R district. He raised a ton of money and attracted the attention of VA D leaders including then-Gov. Mark Warner. He knows current Gov. Tim Kaine. Frankly, he worked his ass off in that race and he’ll do it again in this race. But VA-01 is a “safe” R seat (last D to hold the seat was in 1977) and the R’s selected a very strong candidate. So I’m appealing to you for help – can we boost this race into a national profile? We need help getting Rep. Emanuel’s and the DCCC’s attention. Help from your fundraising skills would be incredibly great. Forgit has a web site up at http://www.forgit2007.com. I think I can speak for a lot of people when I say we would really love your help and support for this tough race.
Good morning
Mornin’ all!
Matt Clayton @ 213
couple of suggestions… speaking only for myself:
1) i’m inspired by a candidate’s priorites and commitments. it would help to know your candidates positions on issues i care about.
2) what kind of attention are your looking for from emanuel?… sounds like you haven’t been around here much. you might want to check out this post from yesterday.
Good morning, pups. It’s MoDo, Friedman and Rich in the NYT this morning. MoDo knew she was going to miss her Weekend Update from “Saturday Night Live,” so she asked the show’s head writer to give her an update on the writers’ strike. Mr. Friedman says that King Abdullah’s path-breaking meeting with Pope Benedict XVI surely gave many Saudi clerics heartburn. But as historic as it was, it left no trace. Mr. Rich says that even if President Bush had the guts to condemn Gen. Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan, there is no longer any moral high ground left for him to stand on.

The coffee, tea and cocoa are ready, and I felt like waffles this morning. (I’ll also confess a secret weakness for Marshmallow Fluff in my cocoa, so if you want some too…) It looks like I’ll have enough time later today to do some long-overdue fall garden work. Have a great Sunday.
Good Morning!
Marion, thanks for the hot chocolate and the waffles, just hits the spot this cold morning. mmm
a hard truth from Frank Rich:
To believe that this corruption will simply evaporate when the Bush presidency is done is to underestimate the permanent erosion inflicted over the past six years. What was once shocking and unacceptable in America has now been internalized as the new normal.
Good Morning everyone. Is it wrong to be still lying to bed as I type this?
