I have a movie premier to attend this evening. It would be more glamorous if my hair didn’t have two inches of dark roots followed by a foot of bleach blonde. I haven’t been to the hairdresser in a while. I’m not sweating it, I’ll make it work.
The film is The Life of Reilly starring the one and only Charles Nelson Reilly and based on the one-man play about his life. I did some music for the film so I’m excited, even though I’ve seen it many times. It’s gotten really great reviews at film festivals and it’s finally going public. If you ever got a kick out of the late Mr. Reilly, you will love this film. His life story is fascinating. The film opens nationwide over the next few weeks. You can find out more here:

Wish us luck!

Donita! Fini! Aloha!
Hi fini
Sounds like an interesting movie….might see it, expecially since your music is in it!!
By the way, kinda off topic but could you please tell Dee I said Happy Birthday? Thanks in advance
GSD @ 5
Another great episode! I swear to god if it were not for Bugs Bunny cartoons I might have never gotten interested in classical music.
Mama Cass-what memories
A beautiful voice

My friend sent that to me. I don’t know where it came from. He won’t tell me.
sinnerman @ 12
Not entirely sure, it came to us random from a fan! Someone has mad Photoshop skills or works at a McD’s on the sign.
Young Jess™ @ 8
Hello Young Jess! I will send your message to Lady Dee.
lovin’ the playlist
I like the Jim Noir on your playlist, but I was disappointed to hear his “MY Patch” on that stupid Target commercial.
Donita Sparks @ 15
Damnit man, I was trying to be more mysterious about it!
Donita Sparks @ 15
There’s a couple of sites you can make a sign say something you want it to, I’ve been to some of them, forget their names though
Good luck on the movie.
Donita Sparks @ 0
I doubt the movie will make it into European cinemas though, as Mr. Reilly wasn’t particular known over here.
Donita Sparks @ 0
I think this suits you. There is no need to worry, if you look like you did when you pondered who would win your guitar.
I just saw, your webmaster changed the Flash animation at http://www.donitasparks.com/gvwy_wnnrs-pg.html and now it’s kinda dark and overexposed at the same time. Last weeks version was better IMHO.
tommy roto @ 19
Saw that commercial the other night and about broke my neck with the double take I did when I heard that song coming out of my TV.

Thanks Elliot

Artists have to make money some way. Years ago I frowned upon that stuff, but now I’m really happy that he’s making some money. I saw him in LA. There were 20 people there.

I’m enjoyin’ the Lee Dorsey and Ruth Brown. Thanks Donita and Fini!

Yes, I had my webmaster change the animation after I was told about the “zoom” feature. I don’t need anyone zooming in on my face, for their own protection of course.
hi! sorry i’m late-again. wish dee happy birthday for me too.
i meant to ask this when the topic was about reilly’s passing but you’d gone for the day, so here goes. i know that CNR was ailing when he was shooting the movie, but did you get to spend any time with him before he passed away?
Donita Sparks @ 27
I’m all for the commercials using indie rock artists for the music like Target did with Jim Noir. They’ve actually had a pretty advanced indie rock soundtrack program for their ad campaigns recently. And the exposure is worth way more than releasing to radio hoping to get heard in a consultant picked playlist. I just was shocked to hear that song on a Target commercial.
I never gave a damn about Charles Nelson Reily until I watched the X-Files ep “Jose Chung’s “From Outer Space.”"
The guy can act.

I like that quote a lot. Leave it to Hunter. I guess I have to look at this differently and train myself to not immediately think “sellout”.

IMO, That Mickey D sign is ’shopped – But it looks good, regardless.
Best of luck to the movie and you, Donita – CNR made my jaw drop a few times watching Match Game back in the day.
Sorry, I posted this in EPU land…
This is their feeble attempt to explain their twisted logic on Mukasey…
“Democrats on Friday argued that votes on a procedural motion, like cutting off a filibuster, should not be equated with a vote on an underlying nomination or bill. A Democratic leadership aide said there likely would have been enough support to cut off a filibuster, making it frivolous to schedule a time-consuming procedural vote to end debate. The aide also said that ‘filibustering a Cabinet nominee is a bad precedent,‘ given that there is a possibility a Democrat may occupy the White House in 2009.
Similarly, Sen. Byron Dorgan of North Dakota, who chairs the Democratic Policy Committee, said Friday it would have been an ‘extraordinary’ move for Congress to filibuster a presidential Cabinet nominee.”

Charles was a famous Broadway actor and a Tony winning director. Yes, he could act. I think you’ll dig the movie if you get to see it.

A picture’s worth a thousand words
tommy roto @ 36
Exactly, because a lot of the musicians who decide on this route to exposure for their music have a lot of pressure to not be considered “sellouts” which is the perennial uncoolest description a musician will hear thrown their way. I prefer to view it as a throwback to the old days before the record company system took over the music world and turned it into a business.
Music is an artform, artists deserve to be paid for their work by anyone willing to pay top dollar for their services. Call it radical entrepreneurialism but the digital music business is very exciting these days for musicians of every age and genre.
GSD @ 5
Did you ever see the Elmer and Bugs version of Wagner’s Ring Cycle? Too funny!
But you kinda hafta know the Ring story line to “get it.”
Sorry, I don’t have the link handy.

Hey Donita, enjoy tonight’s premier. I used to love CNR on Match Game, watched it all the time as a kid. Will probably have to wait till the movie is out on dvd as our one theatre town most likely won’t be showing it.
tommy roto @ 36
Nah, not a sellout. Artists, writers deserve to make some money and have benefits. This freelancing stuff means no group health insurance unless the union offers a great group plan.
Donita, fini, Mama Cass, OKK’s suggestion of Leonard Cohen, Jane and Howie on the picket line, ALL have affected me in a wonderful way. I want us to have the benefits of a good salary and good health care.
It’s okay.
It’s more than okay.
CTuttle @ 43
It’s worse than that. They traded Mukasey’s confirmation for the defense appropriations bill.
Still haven’t heard diddly from any of the candidates. El gato negro, did you swipe their fax machines?
john in sacramento @ 48
sure is :/
CTuttle @ 43
All of this sounds like lame after the fact CYA. I’m surprised they don’t say they had a strategy but the dog ate it. This was a con from beginning to end in which every Democratic Senator participated. As for filibusters, Republicans seem to have no problem with them.
The real story here is that we caught the Democrats with their pants down and they have compounded their dishonesty and fecklessness by trying to tell us not to believe our lying eyes and that it is really all the new fashion craze.
eric the great @ 32
I met Charles during the filming and he was very kind and funny.
Life of Reilly stirred old brain cells in my head that had been dormant for years. I know this has nothing to do with this Reilly, whom I’m aware of…
But how many of you out there remember the original TV series “Life of Reilly” about a rather putzy, clueless but basically decent working guy?
Any “over-the-hill” viewers out there who remember him and the show?
P J Evans @ 54
We the People, didn’t even get the pleasure of a reach-around… At least, the Senate got a special prosecutor appointed during Nixon’s debacle…
tommy roto @ 36
Some punk rock musician (I think it was Dexter Holland, but I’m not sure), when asked how he could reconcile his success with his political agenda, said that making lots of money is the worst thing he could do. I think this kind of irony works best when interviewers ask questions like this one.
Donita Sparks @ 31
Hehe. I’m still surprised you felt exposed because of the zoom function. Changes my whole picture of you.
Donita Sparks @ 43
Just to be clear: When I was growing up in the 70’s I saw Reilly on crappy game-shows. That was my impression of him.
Later I figured out how talented he is.
Anyway, I want to see the movie!
.
wagonjak @ 60
I believe it starred William Bendix. Yes I remember it.
finifinito @ 33
Target’s music selection can be quite unusual. A few years ago, one of their ads actually used “The Shape Of Things To Come” from Wild In The Streets.
Ya gotta wonder if any one at Target knew the successful political tactic used in the flick was spiking the Washington water supply with LSD.
Can’t wait to see the film, Charles Nelson Reily was always a favorite of mine, and now I have even more of reason to go.
Have fun at the premier.

I saw that Health Net info somewhere earlier today. They paid extra bonuses for getting more policies cancelled.

I had the same impression when I was a kid, but he always cracked me up. It wasn’t until I saw the movie that I found out all of his other accomplishments.

Er, yes…vaguely. I also very vaguely remember “My Little Margie,” and “Queen for a Day.”
But at that time my preferred viewing was cartoons and Captain Kangaroo.

Sadly no. Can’t make that one.
