David Broder took a question on his WaPoO chatz today about the new netroots fundraising trend:
San Francisco: Hello, Mr. Broder and thanks for chatting today. Three times this election cycle, the liberal “netroots” have staged countervailing fundraisers when establishment officeholders held lobbyist- and fat-cat-filled events: for Darcy Burner when George Bush visited Rep. Reichert’s district; for Rep. Tom Allen when Joe Lieberman staged a D.C. event for Sen. Susan Collin; and this past weekend when Donna Edwards raised more than $100,000 opposite a Nancy-Pelosi-headlined event for Rep. Albert Wynn.
Do you think this newfound online strategy will influence event-based insider fundraising during the rest of the 2008 election cycle? Will incumbents be afraid of stirring the netroots hornets’ nest and therefore avoid these insider-type events?
Atypically for a Beltway Villager, Dean Broder was speechless:
David S. Broder:
In a followup, a questioner from Missouri (Show Me!!) asked whether the absent reply was intentional or not:
Kansas City, Mo.: I was intrigued by the question posed above by “San Francisco” about competing fundraising events. On my screen, however, I don’t see an answer next to your name. Is that a technical glitch, or did you simply want to let the question stand without comment?
David S. Broder: A technical glitch. What I wrote was that I don’t really know how fundraisers willl react to this development, but, like you, I find it very interesting.
Ah yes! Dean Broder’s catchall “Whatchew talkin’ ’bout, Willis?” response: very interesting. Translation: does not fit established Village protocols, therefore inexplicable.
Maybe he’ll pass his “interest” along to those whippersnappers who really cover politics for the Post, and the paper will actually mention the phenomenon outside of WaPoO ChatzWorld.
Don’t hold yer breath.

“Too much data, coming in too fast…”
Ha. This in combo with the link I saw earlier (here) just makes me chuckle…

The tech folks at WaPoO Chatz Central go through one’s questions and “normalize” them, adding “Sen.” and “Rep.” to luminaries’ names and changing “DeeCee” to “D.C.” I’m pretty sure they also stripped the S from CollinS as well.
“That’s very interesting” is what some folks say to the pastor after church when they don’t care for the sermon, but don’t want to say so to the pastor’s face.
Not that anyone’s ever said that to me about my preaching, mind you, but I’ve heard that it has been said about other pastors’ sermons.
;)
Teddy are you torturing the WaPoo Gas Bags again? Tsk, Tsk, didn’t your mother teach ya better… ;-)

Sorry, Teddy, thought it might be a typo. ’stead, it’s just a WaPoO! But, seriously, silly mistake for even a “tech folks” to make…

David Broder. John Broder. Are they related? Like father and son maybe?
By the way, Teddy, are ya gonna Bronze the screen-capture?
How fundraisers will react? That was not the point you maroon.
Great one TSF!
I always assumed Broder and the others picked their own questions to answer. Maybe I was wrong.

Moron… *g*
If anyone wants to add anything to the pot for Darcy, Tom, Donna, or any of the other Blue America candidates, it’s never too late to join the fun . . .
OT but I’m just wondering. Is everyone else getting inundated with email from so called progressive Senators (Levin, Kennedy, etc) who are “outraged” about Mukasey but who did nothing to stop the nomination from going through? So far I’ve just been sending back pissy notes. How do others think we should respond?
Did anyone ask him about when the big Bush comeback he predicted will occur?
Or ask him how he felt about Fredo and W and Darth coming in and trashing the place or if it’s their place after all, so it’s ok?
realworld @ 26
You’re getting mail from them? Congratulations!
All I’m hearing – and seeing – from the candidates (except Richardson) is *crickets*. Surely at least one of them has something to say about it?
Teddy, the reason he didn’t respond is you let down your guard, veering from your patented “butter ‘em up first” template… :~)
Current CNN.com poll:
Incumbents, beware!
WOW!
P J Evans @ 28
Oh yea, they are outraged and want my support (i.e. $$) to help them do something about it. Kennedy really pissed me off because he could have blocked the committee vote. And probably no one is in a safer seat then Kennedy. I mean if he married OBL he’d probably still get reelected.
punaise @ 29
His response spoke volumes…!
punaise @ 29
I’d like to think “Teh Dean” was left speechless by the audacity…
26 – as for me and my house, we will re-register and put a spam block on.
And yes, I’ve been getting lots of them bc once upon a time, I gave money and support to them.
Here’s a possible response though:
Dear Senator _______________: While I’m flattered by your attentions, I was not actually allowed to vote or participate in party caucusing and strategy on the Mukasey nomination. Perhaps you could send me a detailed list of the actions you took vis a vis Senatory Schumer, Feinstein & Bayh with respect to this vote and perhaps you could show me how honest your outrage is by publically calling them out and spearheading a drive to have them primaried and forced to give up leadership and funds control positions?
Go on Face the Nation and call them what they are – then send me another email.
Or in lieu of that, explain to me how any of Senators Clinton, Obama, Biden and Dodd can lead the country when their combined, unanimous position on this matter could not lead the party.
We’re not stupid and we know when the fix is in. Hope you got some lovely pork from the water resources bill and enjoy those defense contracting and telecom contributions.
Sincerely [so you don’t have to look it up, “being free from pretense or deceit in feelings or manner or actions”]

What I like is that, with the lead into the telecom votes, I get an email from Durbin and Leahy about how terrified I need to be about cybercrime and how we have to fight it.
Sure we do – gosh, though, wonder about that timing, eh?
I wonder how the WaPoO whippersnappers reply when Teh Dean totters by with a story tip. Perhaps his “interest” in this fundraising development will prompt some coverage of these three innovative responses to insider-only events.
Shailagh? Chris? Paul?

I’ve heard people say to the preacher,
“Well that was different.”
You don’t want to hear that one!
“The networks Wong refers to include industry associations like the Institute of Internal Auditors, the North American Energy Reliability Council and the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee.
The CIAO’s strategy of taking advantage of existing networks — and their built-in emergency preparedness — helped speed along the formation of the first of two Information Sharing and Analysis Centers (ISAC) for the financial and telecommunications industries. ISACs are privately owned, industry-specific cooperatives through which the government plans to channel warnings out to the private sector. The government also plans to use ISACs to gather intelligence it needs to better predict an orchestrated attack.”

Didn’t someone come out and assert that Chris Dodd ought to donate to a charity the funds us netroots sent him after his promise to filibuster FISA? I don’t remember seeing anything about that in the MSM either. I think our economic and social powers are still flying under the radar. Not sure that’s a bad thing, if suddenly the establishment wakes up and says “OMG, what is this?” one of these days when it’s too late to stop us. RAAWWWR indeed.

Bugs Bunny reference!
Broder actually gets paid for what he says. Astonishing. Broder. The voice of reason. Can you imagine what Molly Ivins would do in a one on one match up with this character? I used to watch, listen to, and read Broder. Ah… but I was so much older then.

The Kennedy email was headed “Stand Against Torture”. My reply was short.
And where were you standing against torture? Did you filibuster? Did you put a hold on Mukasey? No. I am re registering as an Independent. I find that the Democratic Party is nothing more than an enabler for the Bush putsch.
Sincerely, once a supporter
Hillary following in the footsteps of hubby’s NAFTA deal, in supporting Peru Free Trade Agreement – the first agreement in a package of corporate-crafted agreements to vastly expand the NAFTA trade model….The announcement, which flies in the face of polls showing the public strongly opposed to NAFTA-style trade policies, comes on the same day the New York Times reports that Clinton is being endorsed by NAFTA architect Robert Rubin, the CEO of Citigroup - a company that stands to reap financial rewards from the NAFTA model. Rubin’s announcement came with a promise to raise Clinton more money from Wall Street.http://commonsense.ourfuture.o….._expansion
Robert Rubin was the Treasury Secretary under Clinton. Pres. Bill Clinton, Rubin, and Greenspan were responsible for the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 (the act bans commercial banks from underwriting securities, forcing banks to choose between being a simple lender or an underwriter (brokerage). The repeal is responsible for the mess of the subprime mortgage/credit crunch disaster.
Here’s the kicker: Just days after the administration (including the Treasury Department) agrees to support the repeal, Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, the former co-chairman of a major Wall Street investment bank, Goldman Sachs, raises eyebrows by accepting a top job at Citigroup as Weill’s chief lieutenant. The previous year, Weill had called Secretary Rubin to give him advance notice of the upcoming merger announcement. When Weill told Rubin he had some important news, the secretary reportedly quipped, “You’re buying the government?”

A lot of netroots progressives will not vote for Hillary in the primaries but will vote for her if she’s the nominee… This is from the grapevine, BTW.

Can you say Enron? Rubin and the Clinton’s are dirty, dirty bed partners and stink like 3 day old fish. Article from July 2002; ” Robert Rubin, now the chairman of Citigroup’s executive committee…In addition to this week’s disclosures about Citigroup’s assistance in cooking Enron’s books, during Enron’s final days Rubin played a direct role in attempting to conceal Enron’s financial condition from credit-rating agencies. Specifically, on November 8, 2001, Rubin made a telephone call to Peter Fisher, the Treasury Department’s undersecretary for domestic finance, seeking Fisher’s intervention with Wall Street credit-rating agencies on behalf of Enron when those agencies were about to downgrade Enron’s ratings.”

Do they really think Americans can’t put 2 2 together?

i just got the same email – called his office and spoke with a legislative aide for 15 minutes. it was not a happy conversation…. suggest other people call too. let the aides know what we think about this.
OT..is this new?
Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Thursday that she favors legal immunity for telecommunications companies that allegedly shared millions of customers’ telephone and e-mail messages and records with the government, a position that could lead to the dismissal of numerous lawsuits pending in San Francisco.

In an “Ah-Ha!” moment today I realized that Act Blue is very therapeutic for my mental and physical health.
For years I’ve been trying to do my little bit to restore the Constitution and support the principles of the Republic–only to find my contribution to the Democratic Party often going to some Corporate whore or worse.
Now, whenever I am ticked off because of some idiocy wherever, I fire off a small check to Act Blue to support the appropriate progressive candidate.
“So, you’re going to fundraise for your Rubberstamper, eh Bushie, you traitor? Well, take that!”
Does that feel good, or what?

That’s funny, because I’m sure the reverse is also true.
