hello again
is there a 12 step program for utube?
heh.
you tube is fun, innit? i held out for a long time, then finally installed all the codecs when i found the good stuff.
Harriet Wheeler has one of the prettiest voices ever. Thanks TRex!
8?
Steve-AR @ 7
Minus one.
LoudounLib @ 6
You’re not kidding.
Swoon.
I don’t understand why these guys are a cult band and the freaking Cranberries went global. The music industry just doesn’t make any sense.
Actually, I think “Music Industry” is ultimately an oxymoron.
Suzanne @ 4
Already, M’dear, ya just got DSL…!
Hey, did someone tell the kids we’re up here?
EPU…but interesting..OT…Re-post
Reid Allowed Vote On Mukasey In Exchange For Military Funding Bill

The whole kabuki with the pre-arrange vote had to be a deal with the Thugs..my guess was to keep the Senate SCHIP vote intact..but the Military Bill without War funding makes more sense.
Okay, gang. I need to eat and head for bed.
Good evening, all.
Night T. Have a good weekend.
Speaking of great early 90’s rock, this one is a fave:
The Ocean Blue — Sublime
‘night TRex, sweet dreams :-)

Au Revoir, TRex!
G’night Trex, dream of me!

LoudounLib @ 15
OMG!!!
Gayest.
Song.
Ever.
These guys were my old band, the Go Figures, big rivals. Well, they didn’t actually even know we existed, but my guitar player went to school with somebody in that band and blah blah blah. They got signed and we got, well, bubkes. And STD’s.
Ann Althouseiflage @ 18
Careful, Persi, Sock-Puppeting is grounds for barring… *g*
CTuttle @ 25
it is TRex’s fault, CT – did you miss the thread that shall not be mentioned?
TRex @ 9
got that one right, TRex.

That went *poof*? ;-)
TRex @ 24
Aw, sorry about all that, but I still luuuurve them *g*
yeap, ct – see what happens when you are not at the lake 24/7 like the rest of us (/snark)

But, but ..I has a note from TRex!
I must assume Janine Zakaria, of Bloomberg, must be married to Fareed Zakaria, She’s on with Gwen, here in the Isles…

Yes.
Wait till I finish watching this YouTUbe and I’ll tell you all about it…
Gotta love these internets.
Some guy sees a girl on a subway train, falls in love, posts a drawing and finds her online.
It makes headlines.
Subway musician writes Christmas story at Ground Zero in 1994 predicting the onset of Miracles, finds Box of Miracles in 1997, writes Red Line Blues in 2001, presents friend’s Cardiofeedback technology that will bring about humanity’s next evolutionary leap and…crickets…
I Love NY.
How about some Jimi?

There is no looking back! *g*
persiflage @ 31
Ah! I was busy making a Beef-Tomato stir-fry, sorry… Over rice… *g*
LoudounLib @ 35
Yep. That’s the one.
loves me some red house, ll – thanks
newt and Suz, I just finished re-reading a recent Jimi bio, “Room Full Of Mirrors” — it’s really got me in a Jimi frame of mind…
the overnight guy on kpig played a jimi cut of red house live in san diego – said it was part of a compilation cd set of 4 discs that had a whole buncha jimi live in it.
i shut my eyes and was transported back to jimi on that same tour, oakland arena was where i saw him – all that was missing was the eu du concert aroma so prevalent back then
LoudounLib @ 40
Haven’t read it yet. But he’s in my mind recently, as I “stumbled” upon flacs of his 10_10_68 appearance @ Winterland. Very, very Jimi.
Both shows.
LoudounLib @ 35
Jimi and Janis died within two weeks of each other.Jimi would be 65 and Janis 64..man I am getting old.
Wow Suz, you actually saw him play? Sigh…I’m convinced I was born just a few years too late!
Christy used the title of this song in her morning post, which I just read. I found a nice video with the original Sam Cooke.
A Change Is Going to Come (YouTube-like video)
LL, i saw him but never got to see srv. so many i wish i had seen that are not around anymore :(
newtonusr @ 42
I highly recommend the book if you ever get the chance to read it. It explains a lot about his background. He had a really traumatic childhood :-(
Suzanne @ 46
OTOH I did see SRV play, and it’s one of my fondest memories.
Steve-AR @ 43
Makes one wonder what they would be up to now if they were still around.
janis, jimi, and jim (morrison)
all taken way too soon
LoudounLib @ 35
hey, not only is she a Cancer, she’s got excellent taste in music. ;~)

RonD, good night — and I saw SRV in ‘89 as well (with The Stray Cats opening) at Merriweather Post Pavilion in MD
Loo Hoo. @ 58
Adorably romantic. I almost thought you were talking about Densha Otoko, which is loosely based on something like that which took place on forums. But he did meet her on a train too. ^^
LoudounLib @ 49
Keith Richard is 64 with a heavy drug hx and Eric Clapton is 62 and at one time had a $16,000 a week Heroin habit.
Steve-AR @ 66
And Keef and Eric just keep chugging along somehow, even with all that hx ;-)
seen clapton twice
second time, robert randolph and the family band opened for him
they were a tough act to follow, even for clapton

I thought it was cool that she came all the way from Australia to find romance in the subway.
In 1987 I wrote my theme song (The Subway Serenade) for a girl I saw at Rector Street one day. I never saw her again, but I see her face every time I sing it.
Festival Express, and a very very drunk/stoned Rick Danko
Almost forgot:
The Dixie Dregs with SRV opening, David Gilmour, and Roger Waters on three consecutive days in ‘84.
That’s what I think I remember.
Now to bed for real.

Wow RonD, good times!

CT, you assume right — and great choice of songs there!
g’night Tex, wishing all of you a night of restful sleep.
Thanks LL

Aloha, Tex, and all that I missed earlier…
whew, can you all smell the virtual incense and patchouli oil in here with all of the Jimi and Janis? ;-)
Astral Technician @ 69
I heard your lovely song before your name change!
Night RonD and PeanutButter! Yawn…
LoudounLib @ 67
Heh, at least Clapton has sobered up, I’m not so sure about Keith, tho, his Daddy’s ashes and all…
CTuttle @ 87
Keef will probably outlive us all!
OK, what was the first concert you ever saw and the first album you ever bought with your own money?

How about this — what was your favorite concert ever? Mine is a toss-up between NRBQ at Wolf Trap, and the afore-mentioned SRV show at Merriweather
persiflage @ 89
First concert: The Earl Scruggs Revue, with Emmylou Harris as the opening act.

Tossup: Eagles and Linda Ronstadt at Mile High Stadium in 1976, or Mary Chapin Carpenter and Solas at Wolf Trap in 1999.
Honorable Mention: Little Feat and Bonnie Raitt at the Capitol Theater, 1979 (the last tour before Lowell George died). Lowell was sober that night, and they tore the roof off the place.
persiflage @ 89
THE BEATLES in San Diego!!!
ah, burns, it’s nice to have a local boy here in the thread :-) Wolf Trap holds so many great memories.

I’m so old, not only can I remember going to the 930 when it was at 930 F St., N.W., I can remember going to the Birchmere when it was next to the A&P on Arlington Ridge Road.
LoudounLib @ 109
I was born early enough but, at 11, I was too young to go to concerts the only time they came here in 64. Jimi never came here, Janis never came here, the Doors never came here. Fortunately the Who, Led Zeppelin and others who’ve slipped my memory, did manage to get here.
burns, I’m not too far behind you there ;-)
I can also remember some amazing club shows from when I was in law school, and X, the Blasters, Los Lobos, and the Plimsouls were all hot, unsigned local bands.
and on that note, it’s time for me to split…thanks for all of the musical memories, everyone…good night!
nite LL
First album, The Doors.
And I got to see Jim Morrison’s grave the summer before last on the best vacation of my life with Jossie.

First album: Wednesday Morning 3 am, Simon & Garfunkel
First concert: double bill, The Turtles and Paul Revere & the Raiders
Favorite concerts, Joe Cocker and Leon Russell.
CD @ 123
Man, this thread is a time-warp.
Favourite concert : Osibisa at the Darwin amphitheatre. Tropical summer, warm breeze gently nudging the cloud of ’substance’ smoke, people scattered around on blankets, plenty of room for dancing. The band and the crowd having a fantastic time together. The YouTube doesn’t do them justice but you get the idea.
Loo Hoo. @ 118
I made a charcoal tracing of his stone in Paris, alas, it hasn’t survived my many journeys since…
Who’s the artist that you never got to see perform live and most wish you had?
That’s a no-brainer for me: John Coltrane (I was 12 when he died).

Simon and Garfunkle were one of my early favorites for sure. Along with Today by the Christy Minstrels.

Someday I still hope to see Santana.
Loo Hoo. @ 124
Oh boy, Joe Cocker…I love almost everything I’ve heard him sing. This is a favorite: Unchain My Heart
Loo Hoo. @ 135
I saw Santana back in the 70s. At the very start there was an announcement that he would like a minute of silence while he prepared (”oh, dear, wanker” I thought). Everybody complied and then, about 40 seconds in, over the loudspeakers we hear “The management would like to remind you that smoking is not permitted in the auditorium”. Boo hiss, we all said.
I can’t tell you what he was like. I went by myself and found myself sitting next to a group of about 8 people. The ones next to me didn’t know the rest of their group so when the joint got passed down the row they passed it on to me. I think it was a good show, I certainly felt GREAT.
persiflage @ 137
Yep. The 70’s.
wandering back, interesting thread going on here! I wish i could have heard Bill Evans or Thelonious Monk. Did get to hear Paul Desmond with Brubeck, my, talk about smooth
I’m so old my first concert was the Kingston Trio.
Years later attended the iconic musical Let My People Come performed in the nude at the Village Gate. What a difference that decade or so made. Least we didn’t check out Plato’s Retreat, a la Bolton.
Margot, that is a great Joe Cocker! But, you make me think of Ray Charles. That is the artist I wish I had seen…
Persiflage!! Sounds like a good time was had by all. Carlos Santana is one of the great artist who have improved over the years. If you didn’t check out my link on him, you may want to.
Loo Hoo. @ 141
I was about to say, oh me too, then I realised I DID see him. It was a horrible venue and I’d put it out of my mind but HE and his band were excellent. It was maybe 10 years ago.
wandering back out, time for the ol ndfg to go to bed. Bedcats are calling yanno. Enjoy the melodies & memories dear Firepups, see you Sunday nite!
SunnyNobility @ 140
OMG! Sunny!!!
Nighters, ndfg.
nite ndfg!
Catching up after a couple of way busy days. Here’s my post about the Anchorage Civic Orchestra’s performance of my Sinfonietta last Saturday. The orchestra played their best!
Loo Hoo. @ 142
I did indeed, that’s an older Carlos. I think he was going through a religious/spiritual thing when I saw him. Still, what I remember of it, was great. We had a neighbour in the late 70s who was nicknamed “Carlos” cause he could play guitar like Santana. He’d sit on his front porch playing in the evening, great accompaniment to preparing dinner.

Citizen newdealfarmgirl and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
What about Stan Getz and Brubeck…and anywayz some a those “folk” groups were pretty damned good, like the Weavers, The Limelighters, PP&M. Bill Ecans with his original quartet which included bassest Scott Lafaro (he died in an auto crash when we was early 30’s…only have 4 albums with Evans) was incredible as was Oscar Peterson for years with Ray Brown…ah, them were the dayz, huh?
KEEP THE FAITH AND LISTEN TO THE MUSIC, FASCISTS CAN’T HEAR IT!!
On a political note, shit.
Loo Hoo,
You might like this duet with Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder.
I did see Stevie Wonder in concert and thought he was amazing.

Not that I’m sticking up for HRC, but don’t all the candidates do that? Have questions planted at political appearances, that is. Do I hear a “duh?”
everyone else does it never worked with my mom and doesn’t usually work with the voters. can’t run against the corrupt republicans with an unethical campaign. as my mom would say, that horse aint gonna fly.
Ed*ard Teller @ 158
maybe a “gannon”?
Loo Hoo. @ 151
Idiots! Ethics aside, of all the campaigns, hers should have been smarter.
it will be all the talking heads talk about sunday morning – and they have all weekend to crank up the wurlitzer.
Ed*ard Teller @ 158
If I were a cynic, I might believe that the sin, or crime, or whatever you call it in political terms, is getting caught. Really, how much skill does it take to find yourself a well-managed shill?
Margot @ 152
That was soooo beautiful! And we cannot forget the brilliant Paul Simon, can we?
i can’t get perturbed about planting a question, especially as opposed to not answering questions submitted beforehand. Hillary is not my candidate but planting a question wouldn’t be an issue.
newtonusr @ 157
Why couldn’t she just wait for questions, and if she didn’t get the energy question she wanted, just say, “I’d like to say something about my energy policy.”
Why the horseshit? Why?
Loo Hoo. @ 164
i got to see Ray Charles in the old gym at Louisiana Tech back in the late ’60’s. Basie also. way cool …..
p.s. (could’a been the early ’70’s).
Loo Hoo. @ 166
Really, it’s such a small thing in the long campaign. I have no doubt that it wasn’t Hillary behind it, and she is to be partly forgiven if her staff is full of creeps (Penn, Wolfson, etc.). But jeez, the Dems look like hell.
Who would have believed that the only candidate for President who hasn’t come off like a schmuck in the last month, is Biden?
Suzanne @ 162
All of next week too. It will never be forgiven. I know they all do it, but Hillary has to be perfect. For some unknown reason she is held to the highest standard. And all of the dems are held to a higher standard than any of the slimeballs.
Newton @ 163
If I were a cynic, I might believe that the sin, or crime, or whatever you call it in political terms, is getting caught. Really, how much skill does it take to find yourself a well-managed shill?
Exactly. Almost makes one wonder if the girl was carefully planted.
Well here’s some good news, anyway.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 — The Federal Communications Commission is preparing to impose significant new regulations to open the cable television market to independent programmers and rival video services after determining that cable companies have become too dominant in the industry, senior commission officials said.
Loo Hoo. @ 169
Part of the reason Hillary is held to a higher standard, besides being a woman, is that her husband is the most skilled politician we will probably see in our lifetimes. Those are some very big shoes to fill. Bill transcended forgiveness, and she, like all the other Democrats, will be hard-pressed to duplicate that.
SunnyNobility @ 170
Yep. Admirably wicked, Sunny!
SunnyNobility @ 170

Being, you know, Goopers, you have to believe that they’ve planned for this and gamed it out pretty well. But there is a whole lot of art with the two of them together…
Some happier Hillary news! Ted Strickland endorses her.
Loo Hoo
What do you mean?
——————
Not saying it did happen, but here’s one possible scenario:
Student involved presents herself to the campaign as a major groupee.. hangs around the advance people …I just love Sen C, is there anything more I do to help??? Might have even done advance work.
Sure was quick and specific in ratting it out.
Not what you’d expect from a supporter.
Yes, Sunny. And if Hillary didn’t know she was the “selected one” to call on, she couldn’t have done anything less than ethical.
I went to her break out group at Yearly Kos, and she seemed really genuine about mixing it up. In fact, Jeralyn was able to ask a question.
1,654 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AN..
Citizen Ed*ard Teller:
Congrats on the debut, how is the Anchorage Civic O…back in the day when I was but a pup and traveled with my violin teacher to all the area “Civic Philharmonic” concerts (we got 50 bucks for the dress rehersal and the performance) some a those groups were pretty damned good re: Rochester MN, Austin, MN, Mankato MN. And we played a ton a real good music…so how’s the Anchorage group, did they have fun with the peice?

Now he’s been charged w/16 counts and pled not guilty, maybe he’ll disappear into that magical Abramoff void. Helping the feds investigate. Not to be seen or heard from again until convenient.
He knows all there is to know abut Rudi having been his driver, etc.
I’m betting Abramoff will stay incommunicado til pardon and off to Israel time.. He’s the man who really knows too much.
You think Bush would pardon Abramoff, Sunny? What good would that do him? Do you think he’d just get kicks showing everyone what he thinks of justice and power?
Loo Hoo. @ 190
Nah, I don’t think it would be personal at all
and I’m thinking the decision might be above preznit’s pay grade.

Agreed. Absolutely.
LoudounLib @ 6

Citizen Loo Hoo and the Firepup Freedom Fighters:
“You think Bush would [pardon Abramoff…?”
The time to pardon or commute was when he first got his fingers caught in the honey pot, but there were some very serious state charges (some of the situations related to murder etc in Florida) that were hangin out there and the best that the administration could do was keep a DOJ official “in the room” so ta speak and help navagate the deal-makin’ so as to bury the real bad stuff like murder and the cruise ship connection to some a the terror suspects.
I don’t think that a pardon is forthcomin’ ‘cuz non-administration people, career ASA’s and state folks have too much knowledge, they’d never get away with it and too many non-indicted congress critters are still vulnerable.
KEEP THE FAITH AND PASS THE AMMUNITION…IT’S GUNNA TAKE YEARS TA CLEAR OUT THE CONTAMINATION!!
morning!
Good Morning
Good morning, pups. It’s Collins and Herbert in the NYT today. Ms. Collins says the Rudy Giuliani version of loyalty, which bears a terrifying resemblance to the George W. Bush brand of loyalty, is entirely about self-protection. Mr. Herbert says the elite honchos in Washington and their courtiers in the news media are all but completely out of touch with the daily struggle of working families. Talk about pointing out the obvious…
http://mgpaquin.wordpress.com/
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are ready, and I’ve got toasted Thomas’ English muffins. (MR. Bill reminded me yesterday that it had been a while since we’d had some of those.) Try the gingered peach preserves a friend of mine made — they’re great. They’ve got just the slightest hint of nutmeg in there too. Have a great Saturday.
According to the weather forecast, we have a possibility of rain during the next week. If you don’t know already our governor is leading a prayer service on the State House steps for rain. Personally I’m hoping that he gets wet.
Good Morning!
I am froze …brrr…
Thanks for the muffins and the reading materials, am enjoying both with some hot chocolate!
JPL, I hope he gets wet too!
JPL, as much as I hate to disagree, if he gets wet he’ll just use it as “proof that prayer works,” and then we’ll probably have to start praying over collapsing bridges, potholes, failing schools, etc., etc., etc. Yes, I do believe he’s that stupid…
Good morning everyone.
SunnyNobility @ 189
Yesterday, Joe Scar said that Kerik has been framed. People hate him because he cleaned up NYC. Nobody on his show said anything to rebut this.
Good morning pups!
Lovely fall day in northern Virginia. Ah, it must be that sweet aroma of a newly democratic State Senate.
Marion in Savannah @ 199
you have a point; but then think of it this way, all the while they be praying on potholes, they won’t be preying on us.

some good news to start the day with:

I think that the mods took care of the imposter. Maybe it was Ann herself.
Have a good day all. I’ll probably lurk later but for now I have a few chores to finish up. Thanks Marion for the breakfast and links.
My guess it was La Althouse. Complete with a busted link in the post we were directed to!
Good morning Marion.

One the quad outside were free performances by Taj Mahal, Holly Near, Robbie Basho, Mimi Farina, Queen Ida and the Roots of Creation. And an obscure outfit called Los Lobos de Los Angeles played 4 free one-hour sets at a Chicano Family festival at Puteh Creek Lodge on May 20th!
The student (Peter Afterman) that arranged this remarkable slate of “unknown bands” almost also had scheduled a summer programme of shows that included Blondie, Nick Lowe, Boz Scaggs, the Kinks, and Marshall Tucker but was nixxed by the stodgy Administration.
Grrrrr!
That was the year that was, though. I spent many a hard earned student dollar on concerts that year…but saw scores of bands that I’ll never be able to afford again.
Another Great one has fallen.

How come he’s not running for president in 2008? Why!!!!! *sigh*

Hmm! A question about global warming at a biodiesel plant. Who woulda thunk it? From a student who wasn’t paid for asking the question.
But it is a bit awkward when she accuses others of being “plants” (not biodiesel plants).
In my view, at least the question was about a REAL ISSUE…not something like what Russert or the other screwballs in the Maistream Media seem obsessed about.
I’d also wonder how many of the comments on the blog that followed that article were plants…or at least something akin to “Attack of the Pod People”. C’mon…these folks are attacking Hillary for being a lesbo, the Death of Vince Foster, making scadillions on Whitewater, and getting Rush Limbaugh hooked on Oxycontin! Can’t say that these people haven’t snorted a line or two of “Republican Party Talking Points”, can ya!???
Good Morning everyone.
Morning Millineryman ;)

And of course ALL those Talking Heads are fed questions from the opposition camps and Talking Points from the RNC and WH…sometimes they even forget to re-write them or change their order!
And very good morning to you Elliot!
Pull up a chair, it smells so good up there mmmm
Eloise Harper Reports: The Clinton campaign has admitted to planting questions in Iowa. They have confirmed that a campaign staffer approached a student to ask Sen. Clinton a question about global warming during a campaign stop at a biodiesel plant in Newton, Iowa, on Nov. 6.
gasp. a planted question.
I wonder if that planted question is being fertilized with the uranium seeping into Iraq’s marshes, waterways and soil thanks to the pro-war votes of hillary and others.
sometimes when one checks out all the comments one has to type a new ‘reply’ in order to see updates.
but sometimes there are no ‘updates’ and one’s theory is awash in error.
Yeah, I miss the Sundays too. Oh, yeah- I knew Poppy back when she was in Chapel Hill. She gave me a couple of her short stories to read. My mom stole them for awhile. I never thought she’d be into the whole gay vampire thing, but damn if she wasn’t.
