How much is America’s stupidest endorsement worth to a Republican candidate?
On Wednesday, Rudy Giuliani not only received but celebrated the endorsement of Pat Robertson, a foolish religious nut case whom most Americans who don’t worship religious nut cases recognize as one of the stupidest and most embarrassing public figures in America. But not Rudy.
Robertson’s endorsement isn’t surprising — he’s an astonishingly stupid man, and so making an astonishingly stupid choice in picking Giuliani is just another in a long list of astonishingly stupid statements. What interested me was Giuliani’s enthusiastic public embrace of Robertson’s endorsement and the media’s reaction.
Ignoring what the event revealed about the stupidity of both men, the media focused on the predictable Beltway wisdom: The endorsement means the religious right can support Giuliani despite a personal history and positions opposite those supposedly sacred to the religious right. Beltway pundits may be shocked, but no one should be surprised by Robertson’s admission: the religious wingers want another thug for President to protect them from terrorists and secular liberals, and their so-called “values” are secondary at best.
What was missing was media recognition that when the Republican front runner enthusiastically embraces an endorsement from one of America’s most foolish religious figures, it says more about the presidential candidate and his party than the preacher. Why would any serious candidate ever seek, let alone rejoice in, an endorsement from a figure as embarrassingly stupid as Pat Robertson? And why would the media report this as a political coup for Rudy Giuliani?
Whatever influence Robertson’s endorsement might have with his faithful, does the media really believe that getting an endorsement from Robertson will help Giuliani with the rest of the voting public? Do they believe that Giuliani’s giddiness about the endorsement will make the rest of America think better of him?
The media’s obtuseness continued Thursday, when reports leaked that Giuliani’s long-time friend and partner, Bernie Kerik, could be indicted for corruption related charges, including lying and tax evasion. Media interviews of Giuliani became opportunities for Mr. Mayor to acknowledge he may not have vetted his former police chief well enough, but gosh, he sure was a good police chief. He didn’t explain why we should remember someone indicted for corruption as a “good police chief.” Perhaps now the media will ask whether a President Giuliani would be prone to appoint an FBI Director or Homeland Security Secretary who, after taking office, would be indicted for corruption, lying and tax evasion. Would Rudy pardon Kerik? (h/t eli)
A healthy, vigilant media would be hammering these issues, and Giuliani’s persistent truthiness, warning the public how unqualified and dangerous the man is to run for national office, let along the Presidency. But in the Age of Bush, they’re busy running overblown stories that Barack Obama once neglected to put his hand over his heart, while MSNBC’s Chris Matthews talked incessantly about “Hillary’s incessant hand clapping” when she’s introduced at public events.
At least we had Olbermann last night, reporting the story of the informant who, after being rendered and tortured, falsely confessed a connection between Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda agents involved in training in chemical and biological weapons. The Cheneyites made sure that tortured, false information stayed in Colin Powell’s UN speech as “proof” of Saddam’s pursuit of WMD. So last night as the Senate confirmed an Attorney General nominee who lacks the moral courage to stand up to the Administration’s torture policies, we got another proof that those policies played a key role in misleading America into an aggressive, unjustified war.
Olbermann also invited John Dean to frame the obvious “fox guarding the hen house” story of the blatantly conflicted industry hack who is now head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. As we witness recall after recall of millions of dangerous toys, Dean reminded us that deliberately appointing directors to undermine each agency’s mandates is the essence of the Bush Administration.
The final cable good news/bad news was watching CNN’s Wolf Blitzer react to the revelation that veterans make up a quarter of the nation’s homeless. “A national disgrace,” he concluded, and Cafferty added, “I’m ashamed to be a citizen of a nation that treats its veterans this way.”
That ain’t even the half of it, Jack, but at least Congress is not wasting time on impeachment.
Photo? That’s John Banner, who was not a stupid man.

Good morning!
Good morning Scarecrow!
guilianin correct spelling as far as I am concerned) actually said in an interview he had no comment about giving kerik a pardon
no kidding, he did not say he wouldn’t do it
this is bizarre to me, guilianin could just lie to us and say “of course I won’t pardon him” and then if he wins the administration say “after seeing privileged information it is important to release this patriot”
so he should just bold faced lie about it…but there it is, I guess he is telling kerik to keep his mouth shut until after the elections to which he will be pardoned if Rudholf wins
by the way, what is Rudy’s real first name, is it Rudholf?
Good Morning Scarecrow
as always, cleanly cutting through to the truth:
“What was missing was media recognition that when the Republican front runner enthusiastically embraces an endorsement from one of America’s most foolish religious figures, it says more about the presidential candidate and his party than the preacher. Why would any serious candidate ever seek, let along rejoice in, an endorsement from a figure as embarrassingly stupid as Pat Robertson? And why would the media report this as a political coup for Rudy Giuliani?”
oh;
G’MORNING SCARECROW, THANX FOR THE EARLY POST!
forgot to say that
perris @ 3
Rudolph William Louis “Rudy” Giuliani
I see we have a new AG now. Crap on the Dems who voted for him or didn’t vote at all.
But Scarecrow!
You’re asking the same corporate media that lobbied for the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine and loves Bush’s tax cuts and gutting of the FCC to — gasp! — bite the hand that feeds it?!
I don’t think that the endorsement (and its acknowledgment) bespeaks stupidity at all. Rather, it reflects a cunning political decision on the part of the the (still stupid, but…) candidate Giuliani as well as his party.
-MS
i guess it kinda makes sense (in a sick twisted way)… after all, these are the senators who also “lack the moral courage to stand up to the Administration’s torture policies”
Great post, but Sgt. Schultz deserves better than to be compared to these clowns.
Oh, and as always, certainly enjoyed the post, Scarecrow.

What’s up in the House today? Pelosi was supposed to be here in Lawrence, KS at KU (my high school son was inline to get his first “press” credential and ask her some questions), but there was a cancellation last night due to business in the House.
Good morning.
Eli found a story in the NY Daily News asking whether Giuliani would pardon Kerik. Now that question should have legs — we’ll see.
STTP in Ohio @ 11
yeah. he used his “ignorance” as cover for helping the good guys.
So what time in the night did the democratic cowards in the Senate take their slimy vote?
OT: Per Glenzilla:
Robertson’s “long list of astonishingly stupid statements” is, well, astonishing.
STTP in Ohio @ 11
You know, you’re right, so I noted the actor was not a stupid man. But if someone can find me a better picture of stupid, I’ll switch.
But surely now we can count on the media finally looking into the association of Robertson and the lethal blood diamond operations in Africa?
Robertson, the recently indicted Kerik, wow Giuliani has such lovely friends.
Ian gets this one right:

Kerik apparently was the result of an immaculate appointment
Neither cnn or msgop mentioned Giuliani’s name in the stories of the indictment
RevDeb @ 21
their votes mattered in the senate judiciary committee vote – but not at all for last night’s vote. what mattered last night is that not one senator objected to the unanimous consent decree. see my comment downstairs. or better yet read glenn.
Bilbo @ 6
in that case we should never call him rudy
as far as I am concerned from now on he is rudolf guilianin
And Tim Grieve from the Salon War Room:

just a sec while I google up a pic of George W.
How’s this shot?
I think Robertson’s endorsement was all about Pat wanting to stick it to James Dobson. “You say you’ll bolt to a third party if Rudy is the nominee? Great — you do that, and I’ll be the one invited to the White House when Rudy wins. We’ll see who the real leader of the evangelical movement is.” The fast reply by the Family Research Council (a subsidiary of Dobson’s Focus on the Family) slamming the endorsement was part of Dobson’s pushback.
There is a lot of intramural rightwing TheoCon stuff going on here.
Pass the popcorn, and let’s all sing a hymn.
You know, I cannot imagine a candidate with as much negative personal, political and professional baggage as Giuliani. This guy has so many skeletons in the closet — his whole house is a closet. It’s just mind-boggling to me that any Repub – no matter how delusional – would give 2 seconds consideration to the thought that Rudy might be a serious candidate for them to vote for.

I go back and forth — first I think the Traditional Media is dumber than dog droppings. Then I think they really AREN’T stupid, but just say what their corporate masters tell them to. Either way, they are deadly stupid. (Get a REAL job, you imbeciles.)
But then, I think about D.C. cocktail parties, and realize they really ARE stupid. I see Timmi Russert and his version of “gotcha” and KNOW they are deadly dumb. No game playing at all.
selise @ 25
Yup. Very well said:
Mark Halprin sez Kerik not a problem for Giuliani because the media likes him and unless someone else makes an issue of the relationship it won’t be a problem
I’m sorry — I reread my post — of course, AFTER I sent it — and realized I repeated the same words — “deadly,” “stupid,” etc.
I get so frustrated though!
Elliott @ 35

RevDeb @ 27
mostly i agree – except about the timing… the time to do something was long past at 11:04, the time to act was when any one of them could have objected to the unanimous consent decree.
Scarecrow @ 40
I didn’t see any pictures of Nancy Nord there, but surely she was invited.
Kinda OT, but what disappoints me the most is that these people will do anything to get, then keep these offices.
Don’t get me wrong; I realize there is much hard work and long days in running for elective office. But when you’ll do anything to win, that’s when it becomes easier and easier to compromise your principles.
Just look at Rudy, he has none. Whatever you need him to be, he is. And now, because it means votes he embraces the endorsement of a certified nut job.
masaccio @ 34
Cuz you would hate yourself for being a Republican?
I love that photo! The man can act. Great shot! And I love that you put it up every time you post on Rudee (you’d like to see it as the French would put it – with an accent mark – or you could try Rudie as the Germans would put it).
My view of the “endorsement” is that it was a sign of hubris for both men. “Look who I’m with!” Like a kid waving to the tv camera.
Something on the sunny side:

Leave the vapid and stoo-pid to the usual suspects.
TheraP @ 45
sounds about right
And another one of Rudolph’s lies is when he claims that his former driver/Corrections Commissioner was a good Police Commissioner.
The improvements in crime rates during Rudolph’s time as mayor were instituted by Bill Bratton, now chief of LAPD. Rudolph got upset when Bratton got some credit for things and pushed him out as commissioner.
And Abner Louima, Amadou Diallo, and Patrick Dorsimond were killed or brutalized during Keirk’s tenure.
Any pools started yet on how long it will take for everyone in the country but spineless members of the US Senate to be confirmed in our suspicion that our brand-new AG will totally disappoint us? I’m estimating this will happen by December 1.

i’m having trouble wrapping my head around the idea that we have david addington’s puppet as AG – and that every single democrat in the senate helped put him there.
‘Crow, I swear, when I saw Rudy doin’ press-conference rehab on Kerik, I took it for granted that the fix was in, and that Rudy knew that Kerik would walk; and was just pre-emptively setting himself up, down the road, for some campaign:
“See! I told he was a good guy!” bullshit.
A pure delight to see how wrong I was. :o)
And as I posted on Digby, it was a great moment in american politics to see Father Pat thumb-rubbing Jeebus-shit onto the rudester’s forehead, while they sat at podium and smiled their corrupt, unctuous, smiles; and twined and mingled, and politically copulated like two satanic ferrets from hell.
Rudy is too fucking stupid to know it, but he just got “the mark of the beast” from this “christian leader” who worships at the Temple of Mammon, and who is willing to steam-curl and twist ANY moral tenet into hatred, ignorance, and bigotry.
Of course, we should spare a thought for poor old John McCain, who wasted all that time and energy giving prostate-gland tongue-massages to the wrong “Man of God”.
Who knew that Jerry was about to make the great sky-hop? :o)

I thought the chat thing was funny. the rest looks pretty devoid of anything.
Robertson is not stupid, he is a whore and so is Giuliani. What this endorsement tells me is that the faux Evangelical right wing extremists, in this case nut case Robertson will endorse the devil if he believed he had a chance to defeat a Democrat contender.
Giuliani’s position on abortion and gay issues are unacceptable to Robertson and his flock. It tells you how scared they are of the losing the White House. I cannot wait for Giuliani’s photos crossdressing to start resurfacing. Especially the one in which he flirts with Trump.
We have a fake cowboy in W., and now for all to see a fake Evangelical in Robertson, and a fake everything in Giuliani.
From Angry Black Bitch yesterday:
That about sums it up.

just called senator feingold’s office to inquire why he did not object to the unanimous consent agreement on mukasey’s nomination. was told there wasn’t a UC.
arrrrgh.

Is this the one you mean?
Mornin Scarecrow and pups.
Impeachment would force the Republics to go on record to defend Bush and Cheney. It would force them to take actions to keep Bush and Cheney in office.
In the mean time, Republics continue to block, as much as possible, the Democrats agenda. Bush is sitting there between bike rides ready to veto, so nothing gets accomplished anyway.
“Impeachment off the table” makes sende how?
Pat Buchanan on Kerik –it’s just a small irs problem- Buchanan the whore from the crypt
For me, the story of the Robertson endorsement, was Ted Olsen’s role. I think the folks who put “W” and Cheney in the WH now have decided that Rudy is the one to complete the police state transformation.
selise @ 60
Good God! Perhaps they were just sleepy and all wanted to go home to their beds. WTF is wrong with the Democrats, and this time I don’t mean just the Democratic leadership? Each and every Democratic senator, all 50 of them dropped the ball on this one. EACH and EVERY one of them. What’s wrong with these people??? How come it takes 60 votes to do something good and 50 to do something bad. Can you say: “Level the fucking playing field!“?
Is it possible that unanimous consent is only for legislation, and not for Senate approval of nominees?
selise @ 60
The vote was all worked out before the “stage show” was televised. The “gang of 14″ Dems would have voted for cloture but got cover by voting “No” on the floor vote. IMO.
Steve-AR @ 64
It’s been more than clear that’s the job he’s running for.
Steve-AR @ 67
That would mean that Feingold is lying. Wouldn’t it?
Either there was an agreement not to filibuster or there wasn’t. Maybe the term “unanimous consent agreement” means different thing to different people.
Good blog! The timing of Olbermann’s observation was poignant, given the vote yesterday evening, characterized in one item I saw this morning as having always been a ’sure thing.’
A day shouldn’t go by without this point being made — very loudly.
Rudi is TOO SHORT to be president.
RevDeb @ 23
Excellent point. What’s next, “…he’s wrong on advocating the violent overthrow of the government, but that shouldn’t disqualify him…”

just got off the phone with an aide to a different senator… and there may have been some gaming by reid that prevented objections. i’m not sure at the moment, so i’m not going to say which senator’s office it was until i figure things out – last thing i want to do is add to the inaccurate finger pointing.
Mukasey. Way to go Democrats.
AP – Pakistani police placed opposition leader Benazir Bhutto under house arrest Friday, uncoiling barbed wire in front of her Islamabad villa, and reportedly rounded up thousands of her supporters to block a mass protest against emergency rule.

OT:
Glad to see that Congress showed Bush that he was irrelevant with the Veto over ride of the Water Bill.
(AP) — Former New York City police commissioner Bernard Kerik surrendered Friday to face federal corruption charges.
A law enforcement official, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the indictment had not been unsealed, confirmed that Kerik had surrendered to await a court appearance later Friday.
I have a different take on the Bushco. is stupid theory (you’d get no kick from me using the term evil).
When has Bush been denied anything he sought? When have the warmongers been turned aside?
They play stupid (a passive-aggressive tactic I saw perfected by my chain of command in the corporate world, from supervisor right on up to CEO) as a ruse, and use it as camoflage. Stupid is easy to ignore or ridicule. Evil, not so much.
While Republicans enjoy the agressive nature of the strategy, Democrats are adept and the passive ploy. Ohhh, us poor widdle victims don’t have 60 votes, we can’t hardly do nothing, boo-fuckin’-hoo!
60 DLC Democrats will make less of a difference than one might think. Plus, I often suspect Rahm’s electoral strategy is to keep things close so they can keep the stupid strategy viable.
Good post Scarecrow, and the facts are spot on. Beg your pardon for my different ‘get’ on them.
Glenn get it “right” again.

All of the so called Dem’s in the Judiciary Comm agreed NOT to place a hold on the vote out of committee. I am really wondering WTF was held over their heads!
(Hogan’s Heroes geeking)
Not only was John Banner not stupid or evil, neither was his character, Hans Schultz. That’s made clear in several episodes, where we find out that Schultz is actually a Social Democrat, which is why he looks the other way when Hogan and his crew plot various schemes. (He also owns the Schatzi Toy Company and is thus deservedly richer than Croesus.)

This country gets nuttier by the minute.

Votes aren’t counted if there’s unanimous consent. The head count indicates it was a record vote. How do they arrive at a record vote without cloture? They all agreed it was time. More kabuki theatre.
Good morning all :)
Random thought….
It all just appears to be some sort of ‘game’. Bush and Co has made sure the the USA is going down. Goullini (the face of the hypocrisy is revealing), is being floated for the Repubs, aided by the shadows at/behind the WH – Ted Olsen wouldn’t be there other wise.
So Hills will be elected by Dems holding their noses and their asses and by Repugs who can’t handle Goulini and his stench.
Business as usual….
Phoenix Woman @ 86
I should have just stolen a pic of Robertson himself. My stupid.
alank @ 88
that is not the issue at question.

The bottom line is they were voting for confirmation of David Addington’s sock puppet. No matter what, the Bush dogs were going to allow him to be confirmed. The solution is more Dems so that the Bush dogs don’t control the outcome of votes.
Steve-AR @ 83
I hear that Beijing has 6 concentric beltways looping around it.
Probably the fact that the major media has largely been portraying Mukasey as this really nice guy being picked on by the nasty partisan obstructionist Dems. That, and the idea that Mukasey is the best they’re going to get out of Bush, and actually better than the Gonzo-hires running DoJ now. (Yes, as looseheadprop’s post indicated earlier this week, DoJ is so unbelieveably messed up now that somebody like Mukasey is actually a step in the right direction.)

That sounds right, but I’m confused. If the prez may need to do whatever is necessary to avoid a catastrophy, what is precluded? So, I think we’re back to square one and if it was good enough for Tammerlaine, it’s good enough for anybody.

update… i think i had it correct before, that any senator could have objected and forced a cloture vote which would have required 60 votes to pass.
i have been told that there is a report that reid made some agreement with the Rs – trading the mukasey nomination for something to do with the defense spending bill. however, i’ve not been able to confirm this report and reid’s office will neither confirm nor deny it (let alone tell me what the deal was).
if anyone has contacts to persue it further, that would be great… i think i’ve gone as far as i can.

Maddy, regarding impeachment;
Until we some repubs on our side on that, it’s just not going to happen. And to get them, we’re going to have to get closer to the election, and we’re going to have to have a candidate who hasn’t been a war supporter, or at least, one that knows and STATES, how wrong they were.
We’re going to have to nominate someone who can and will, WELD the Iraq can of worms to bush, and the GOP’s asses. If we don’t do that, there isn’t going to be an impeachment move, and there won’t be a democrat in the white house, either.
The repubs are hanging tough now, but wait about 3 or 4 months. The pressure on them over the clusterfuck will be getting unbearable. If we pick someone who can hammer them on that, then, politically speaking, they will hand us george bush on a platter, and help us eat him. :o)
You read it here first. :o)
Tanbark @ 111
You make a good point. I just got home from work so you might not read this comment. I just think that at some point this has to be a priority. If we allow this administration to skate we are not doing our job, they must not be given a free pass. I don’t know how to accomplish it but it sure seems that when a democrat got into a sexual peccadillo (clinton) they were all over it. When a president is responsible for the deaths of who knows how many and add to that the spying, the corruption of the Justice Dept., the treason committed in outing Valerie Plame, Katrina, and on and on..yet nothing happens? It leaves me so goddamn angry and frustrated I can’t think straight sometimes. So I will just keep calling and writing even though it feels like I am pissing in the wind. I talked to one of John Conyer’s aids in Trenton, Michigan this morning and she said she would have more info on the impeachment process next week. He has waited a very long time to become chairman of the congressional judiciary committee and now he is between a rock and a hard place because the dems are not united on this. Ass clowns like Rahm Emmanuel would be better served as repugs because they certainly don’t represent the party that was wedded to labor and working people for most of its history. Sorry to be so long winded, I have so much to say and it takes me awhile to get it right on paper.
I don’t see Robertson as stupid, he’s actually acting very consistently. Robertson’s #1 reason for endorsing Guiliani is not for protection from terrorists, its because he really truly believes that Guiliani is the most likely candidate to kick off Armegddon. This is the first thing and the last thing his and his followers think about when they get in and out of bed each day.
Robertson is the personification of the hypocrisy of the UUUUberchristofacisttalibangelical religious nut cases. What, let your own loudly and very publicly proclaimed moral values get in the way of turning a profit by backing a winner instead of a candidate who espouses your supposed values? NO PROBLEMATO! These people have NO SOULS. They are meat puppets fit only to be made into soylent green. And the fact that 1 in 4 homeless folks are veterans…days before veterans day? BWAHAHAHAHA! You just can’t make this stuff up! Yeah, let’s pass a resolution condemning MoveOn.Org for it’s General betrayus add and SCREW funding the VA. BWAHAHAHAHA! Stop, stop, yer killin me! Support the troops indeed, BWAHAHAHA!
Well, imagine how the Fundies might feel less than a year from now if Rudy’s the GOP nominee for Presz …
