If one wanted to sum up the congressional career of Top Bush Dog Dennis Moore (Arf-KS), one would be hard pressed to beat the last verses of the song that Monty Python wrote about his fictional namesake back in 1972:
Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore
Riding through the land
Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore
Without a merry band
He steals from the poor
And gives to the rich
Stupid bitch!
He certainly does. If you’ve wondered why there haven’t been any bills to help out the little guy and gal caught in the crumbling facade of the illusory “Bush Boom” — the subprime mortage scams and all that — wonder no more. To quote Matt Stoller:
It’s time to understand that Bush Dogs are part of a working conservative majority. They are not our friends, they are not our allies, they are political opponents who want to bail out wealthy investors and hurt people trapped in subprime mortgage markets. Politically, they are also the people hurting Democratic capacity to differentiate ourselves as populists and capture swing areas and exurban Republicans hurt by the housing meltdown.
Guns are one thing, but there is no strong grassroots movement in conservative districts on behalf of big banks. These people are simply whores for credit card companies and banking interests building profitable de facto debtors prisons.
Why is Congressman Moore leading his fellow Bush Dogs in so assiduously screwing you and me and everyone we know? Big hint: The man gets most of his contributions from the financial industry, and has built up a nice little war chest therefor.
Kansans in the Third District: Any truth to the rumors that y’all are planning to primary Moore’s sorry butt? Looks like he could use it. In the meantime, it sounds like he could stand hearing from you:

“Bush boom”? I’m laughing so hard it hurts. Well what can you expect when 60% of stocks are owned by one percent? But then, we do have “right to work”. Or is that right to slave?
While all eyes ares on the dual housing and credit crises, a new study revealed the continuing and steady decline of employer-based health coverage in the United States. Once the lynchpin of the U.S. health care system, workplace health insurance now covers only 59.7% of Americans, down from 64.2% in 2000. And making matters worse, surging health care costs, insurance premiums and employees’ own contributions continue to exceed inflation and the growth in wages.
For the details, see:
“Employer-Provided Health Coverage Continues to Decline.”
PW!
Fitz!
Stupid bitch! *g*
And the DLC will save us from our economic misery.
Oh my.
Campaign finance reform. LOBBY REFORM.
What happened to my lupins?
Bush is going to have to bailout his economy and his true believer supporters with our tax dollars pretty soon. We have to stop him. We need to make him pay as he goes for his losing war.
I will sleep so tight tonight. Because my party promises a new “morning in America”.
We’ll be steppin’ in high cotton soon. Vote DLC in Nov. 2008.
smapdi @ 9
I don’t know – did you get a big freeze?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 10
that sounds familiar, where have I heard that before?
Do we have any potential primary challengers for Dennis Moore?
someone’s pinched ‘me
winkleslupines!A chicken in every pot, come Nov., 2008.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 6
Welcome, Welcome One and all to Hillary’s:
Corporate Slave State
Wistle while you work! Unless you be a DFH or one O’ them rude, uncivil bloggers!
Evening Doggies! Made it thru another year today, my birthday!
And what’s this about “credit card companies and banking interests building profitable defacto debtors prisons”?? How does one make a debtors prison pay??
Not a freeze yet. Dennis Moore stole them!
Steals from the poor, and gives to the rich!
lupin Ella, baseball manager
Well I guess I’ll be called a trol or
some such thing but this country if in
grave trouble and the speaker of the house
is now going to arm wrestle with the boys
from Texas again and yet Firedog seems to want to
go off tilting forever at windmills.
I just don’t get it!
punaise @ 21
Yeah ! Great one
I’m listening to Lou Dobbs on Rachel Maddow’s show talking about his new book and how he thinks everyone should say fuck the Democratic AND Republican parties, become independents, bring populist politics back and take back this country for the working man and woman.
And frankly it sounds pretty damn good to me.
Yes PW, it’s true a big part of the reason Bush Dogs exist is because they get money from their corporate masters, but the BIGGEST reason they exist is because they are not only NEVER punished by the Dem leadership, but are indeed encouraged by the leadership to vote the way they do.
In other words, it’s not just the Bush Dogs who have sold the American people down the river, but the entire Democratic leadership. It wasn’t just the Bush Dogs who voted another middle class screwing trade bill out today.
And nothing will change as long as the same DLC pukes are in charge.
That’s why I will not only be taking Dobbs up on his suggestion to quit the Democratic Party and register as an independent, but I will be upping the ante and boycotting the Dems in ‘08.
Fuck em’ all. Call me when the revolution starts…
Oklahoma kiddo @ 17
Can we have the pot in the chicken instead? *g*
Things Come Undone @ 15
at the moment, i want to get rid of the entire senate (by voting)
Happy Birthday conniptionfit!
It has been my belief that there are a thousand little fingers in the dike of American’s financial disaster leaky dams waiting for Jan 09 to let go and then blame it ALL on Democrats…. you had that baby it must of pooped on their watch.
As much as I do not want it to happen, I have a feeling that they can’t cover all the leaks that are springing up and it will all come crashing down….. God help us then…
Elliott @ 27
Yes, and many more.
So Dennis Moore is a member of my party?
Twain @ 29
Thirded!!
Perhaps Dennis Moore could balance the Democratic ticket as veep.
Mark C @ 24
Yeah, we’ll jes go ahead and start without you. How would that be? Whiners are not, in my experience, much good in a revolution.
Thanks, guys! So far it’s been pretty good- I stayed away from the news all day! I expect it will go downhill pretty fast- but, hey, there’s nothing like the national “News” to get the blood moving and clear the ol’ sinuses!
conniptionfit @ 25
Don’t get the ’stuff’ wet though.
Come to think of it suppose we devloped a weighed rating system based on how people vote on the war, healthcare, economy etc then we rate the bush dogs.
Depending on how much money we raise and if we can recruit enough good candidates we start targeting these false dems.
Just the rummor that we were thinking about doing this might convince Rohm and Nancy to grow a Spine.
After all Nancy and Rahm need the support of a majority of the House of Representives to keep their postions in the leadership.
Rahn in particular has ambitions of future advancement being on the wrong side of a populist trend that will define the Democratic party for years kind of hurts him.
And how DOES one make a debtors prison pay?
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a fresh face and name in the White House?
lahoma
I used to live in the KS 3rd District and have followed Dennis Moore’s career. Given the politics of that district, it is my belief that Rep. Moore is as liberal or progressive a Congressman as the Democrats are likely to elect in that district unless the demographics change substantially. I have not heard of a primary challenge and would be surprised if one occurred.
Dennis Moore was a prime beneficiary of Dr. Dean’s 50 State Strategy in that he faced no serious Republican challenger. The Club for Growth was pumping the money elsewhere, like the Kansas 2nd and the AG race. (Dems carried both, though I expect Rep Boyda will have a big target on her back next year in the KS-2.)
It’d be nice if Rep Moore would return some of the love to Dr. Dean.
Leahey: I’m not going to aid and abet the moral contortions of this administration…or something like that.
The President is not above the law, and the President is not allowed to place anyone else above the law, and that’s why I’m voting no on this confirmation. Leahey.

Did you all hear about the tidal surge poised to hit England shortly? 10 feet above normal. The worry is that it’ll be worse than in 1953, when the surge killed 300. It’s in all the UK papers, here’s one:

Oops, looks like the surge has hit, at least in Northern mainland Europe –

LS @ 53
And then there is Florida, Malibu, New York and HI., etc.
LS @ 53
Yes. Although I have hope for them, since these are peoples who have lots and lots of experience fighting the oncoming tide — they at least won’t be guilty of a black comedy of errors like FEMA produces.
Oh — Lest I forget! Happy Birthday, conniptionfit! I hope that this coming year brings you joy.
Unfortunately, Dennis’ Gooper opponents have been far more evil and reactionary. His election victories have been barely, 50% until last Nov., with antiwar vote did make a difference.
I will be the first to crtiticize him and I have. I do think that the tone of this post suggests perhaps personal corruption. I do not think that, he is dishonest.
I would like to see primary challengers against all Democrats who will not STOP THE PHONY WARS NOW AND PROSECUTE THE REAL CRIMINALS OF 9-11.

sometimes that seems like the only solution, maybe even the inevitable solution
dakine01 @ 64
Yes. But I don’t know whether I am quite ready for that solution.
Mark C @ 24
I have to agree with Dobbs. Neither party is doing this country any good, and both are so busy trying to outsmart the other that nothing is getting done. I have already registered as independent after leaving the Republican Party. I would vote for a Democrat, but so far have not been impressed with anyone.
I think it would be wonderful if we could vote out everyone and start over. Maybe that would get someone’s attention.
LS –
I have somehow missed the info on Yellowstone. Could you point me in a direction where I can read about it?
LS @ 67
and we’re about due, it’s been like 650,000 years.
In an injunction signed Thursday, U.S. District Judge Ronald Leighton said pharmacists can refuse to sell the morning-after pill if they refer the customer to another nearby source. Pharmacists’ employers also are protected by the order.

So angry. These people force the Muslim cabbies to carry liquor and handle pork and allow the Pharmacists to refuse to do their state licensed job.

So what would you call a firepup who supports “bankruptcy reform”? A “Bush Pup”?

We’ve got dems in red states or red districts who are pretty damned conservative- but they vote for dem leadership…If ya take em out- ya get a gooper.
Primary challenges, in my opinion, should happen AFTER a substantial majority is achieved and should happen only in places where the odds of a progressive winning are very good.

Oh good, thanks for the reference:
any day now.
Feinstein is just an embarrassment. Voting down the nominee will do nothing to stop torture. (Except that it won’t condone it or make her complicit in it.) She says Mukasey will be better than an interim AG but she gave not one shred of evidence for this view. Just awful.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 91
Ummm….a 3rd one??
If Mukasey gets in the bottom line is “waterboarding” is acceptable.
rwcole @ 80
That is why Darcy Burner put “More” before “Better” when she said we need “more and better dems. I you look at voting records; the worst Dem. Steve,
Yep! To build a successful and more progressive dem party- you first have to have a party strongly in the majority- otherwise you can do nothing.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 95
It probably doesn’t even matter anymore since Bushco does what they heck they want to anyway. They won’t tell him anything about anything. They’ll just lie to him or twist everything all up, so he won’t know what’s up and what’s down. Kinda like us. He’ll just be a figurehead.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 84
I was just reading a piece over at Think Progress about Cheney sitting on an NIE about Iran because it does not agree with his “evidence.”
Forget about “good” government — I say it is time to start looking into criminal charges against Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid for NOT pursuing impeachment against Bush and Cheney. We are at a point that what they are not doing amounts to a dereliction of duty…
Hugh @ 93
I maintain that HRC is an embarrassment also.
Diane @ 98
The only thing Schumer and Feinstein got out of this was Lieberman-like sops to their egos.
BTW, Kerik was indicted today, expected to be arraigned tomorrow… ;-)
“We are at a point that what they are not doing amounts to a dereliction of duty…”
The view here is that what you say is correct.

Is this Graham now talking? He thinks it is terribly unfair that some Senators will vote against Mukasey just because he supports torture.
LS @ 120
ran dummmmmm acts of blogness
Elliott @ 14
“Morning in America” was one of Ronald Reagan’s ads in his 1984 re-election campaign. It was an extremely effective piece of advertising: it’s one of only two US election ads I can say I recall as distinct artefacts. The other is LBJ’s Countdown. It’s not that I saw them, it’s not that I’m in advertising, and it’s not that I’m a Republican. I’m not even a US citizen. They are both exemplaries of their respective forms of political marketing.
Anybody noticing a huge upsurge in MSM reporting on adult-on-kid violence lately? I wonder if the stage is being set for some high-profile accusations.
Watching Tom Brokaw on Countdown just now, he said something along the lines of “Barack Obama being the first credible African-American running for President.”
Did I miss something or has conventional wisdom decided that Jesse Jackson was not a “credible” candidate for President. Or is Tom Brokaw just full of shit?
I think I’m voting for the latter as the correct answer.
Apparently, Obama has alienated all the DFH’s – must be all that Lieberliar advice.
Hmmm. @ 125
Hmmm, do you know something we don’t?
CTuttle @ 106
This is going to be fun.
dakine01 @ 126
I was thinking of asking the same question. Although his results were not spectacular, it was certainly my impression that Jackson was “serious” about running for president. By what authority does Brokaw say otherwise? Is he just espousing the Beltway Conventional Wisdom?
Sessions, waterboarding is not torture…
Mark C @ 24

Phillips And Lou Dobbs Launch Financial Newsletter
(ROCKVILLE, Md., February 27, 2003) — Phillips Investment Resources, LLC, today announced the launch of Lou Dobbs’ Money Letter. This monthly newsletter will provide readers with unique access to Lou Dobbs’ unparalleled insights, commentary and perspective on the economy and the markets. It will also feature in-depth interviews with top executives, analysts and money managers to help investors succeed through these difficult times.
“Lou Dobbs is a trusted voice and perceptive commentator,” said John J. Coyle, president of Phillips Investment Resources. “As difficult as it has been for investors over the past few years, now more than ever, they need Lou’s insight and ability to give them access to the people who are shaping the economy and the markets. And, most importantly, to get answers to the tough questions that will help them build and protect their wealth.”
“The newsletter gives me the opportunity to help investors in a new, direct and cohesive manner,” commented Dobbs. “I’m thrilled to be able to team up with Phillips Investment Resources. Over the last couple of years investors have been dealt one bad hand after another to the point that their trust in our financial markets has been shattered. I’ve seen firsthand the mistakes that have been made, but I firmly believe the individual investor can avoid the pitfalls and succeed with the right information and perspective. I will do my best to provide both through the Lou Dobbs’ Money Letter.”

Oh?
Falafel Billo, Bronze, Silver Medalist, MM is the Gold Medalist…
anwaya @ 124
I think that’s a good observation.
rwcole @ 133
I thought of that but I think if Jackson had actually been treated fairly and with respect, he could have come closer to winning than some of the other “credible” candidates that TradMed has tried to cram down my throat over the last 35 years.
Hmmm. @ 135
well now I’ll be more atuned to that now that you’ve mentioned your observations.
Sessions now qualifies to wear a scarlet “T”.

He was a one in a million shot- Obama may be one in ten-
Is the Senate trying to vote on Mukasey tonight? Each side has 1.5 hours left. Cardin up, CSpan2.
rwcole @ 136
Drew Westin, author of Political Brain seminar at Yearlykos said that they will do the same to Obama that was done to Harold Ford Jr…. using the subliminal racism.
You are seeing it over and over again, Obama did not put his hand over his heart — false but out there. Obama’s middle name, the Osoma/Obama slips… they will do it.

Can one of you late nite folks tell ET I got to talk with Diane Benson today, thanks.
rwcole @ 136
I’m afraid that Obama has fallen short of all expectations. I wanted so much for him to do well enough to be at least a VP choice but something happened along the way and I’m not sure why.
egregious @ 150
Sure will… any specific message?
Twain
Have to admit that I haven’t been watching the primary contest closely…Many have commented that Obama comes across a little eggheady and without much fire. I have noticed a bit of that in the little I’ve seen- although what he says makes sense for the most part.
The vote could be within the next few minutes.
rwcole @ 153
Apparently when he makes a speech he sets the crowd on fire, but in the debates he can’t seem to find his feet. I was stunned by that – thought he would be great.
Barbara Boxer speaking on Mukasey now
Isn’t the vote a foregone conclusion?
It just doesn’t seem to matter if Mukasey makes it or not, because the Administration will continue to torture, and he will be powerless no matter what he thinks. He will never, ever, be read into their true crimes, and that goes for anyone else that would hold that position, with the exception of Addington and Fielding.
SunNobility @ 142
I’m not so much supporting Dobbs as I’m agreeing with his belief that both parties have let the American middle-class down and neither party deserves the support of the American people.
Just the latest fucking, via the NYT
Nearly half the Democrats.
Guess what. They aren’t all bush-dogs.
The only thing these DLC pukes like Pelosi and Reid will ever understand is a threat to their power.
BOYCOTT THESE DLC PUKES IN ‘08!!
New thread upstairs.
Wikipedia:
“1988 election
Four years later, in 1988, Jackson once again offered himself as a candidate for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. This time, his successes in the past made him a more credible candidate, and he was both better financed and better organized. Although most people did not seem to believe that he had a serious chance at winning, Jackson once again exceeded expectations as he more than doubled his previous results, capturing 6.9 million votes and winning eleven primaries. Briefly, after he won 55% of the vote in the Michigan Democrat caucus, he was considered the frontrunner for the nomination, as he surpassed all the other candidates in total number of pledged delegates.”

FWIW, Raw Story is reporting that the National Journal’s CongressDaily reported that DiFi “may now be waivering in her support” for retroactive immunity on the telcom issue. She reportedly said: “I did support [immunity] in the intel bill and I’m giving it further thought.” ??
recoveringlurker @ 163
“waiver”, my *ss. wave her through the Phantom Tollbooth on her way to the underworld following her Mukasey antics.
Word. Stop and think people, we’re talking Kansas here. You remember, that’s the place where Darwinism is replaced by Creationism or Intelligent Design every few years. As a former resident and contributor to Dennis Moore myself, I can tell you that while he might be a Blue Dog Democrat, you sure don’t want to consider what it would be like to have to deal with the person who runs as his Republican opponent in that certifiably conservative district every two years.
I’m as frustrated as the next person with the ineffectiveness of the Democrats since they retook congress, but hating on Dennis Moore when he’s up against the forces he has to run against every two years is ignorant, self-indulgent, and naive.
Mrs. K8 @ 43
The tidal increase is a normal patterned “spring tide”. The problem is that it is also linked to a Storm Surge (which isn’t a tidal surge) related to the low pressure system in the area.
It’s the big storm in combination with a once a year high tide that will cause the flooding. But the storm is doing a lot of damage and killing on it’s own. 105mph (170km/h) force winds have nothing to do with the lunar tide cycles and are the things doing the most damage.
smapdi @ 9
Dennis took ‘em. ;-)
PsychoPink @ 165
The problem, PP, isn’t that he’s a social conservative in a socially conservative area. (Which is kinda doubtful — I mean, lookit, you’ve got places like Lawrence in the 3rd CD, and Lawrence is a nice college town. But I digress.) The problem is that he’s the lead quisling on behalf of Big Money.
Does it mesh with Kansans’ family values to back a guy who sides with the banks against them?
Tom – Daai Tou Laam @ 40
Yeah. But he’s apparently been too busy siding with Republicans on pro-money, anti-people bills to care.
Steve-AR @ 96
The problem in Moore’s case is not that he’s a conservative Dem, but that he’s one of the people leading the fight to make Congressional Democrats into corporate-whore Republicans.
In the meantime, it sounds like he could stand hearing from you
He heard from me after his vote on the Move-On condemnation. I pointed out that I’d voted for him every time he ran, but wouldn’t be voting for him again. So far, no response from him or his office.
Like I told him, just being pro-choice isn’t enough any more.
