Lots of other unions showing up to support their WGA bretheren.
And Shawn Cassidy.

Not zed
I hope they have jobs when this is over :(
I come from blue collar union stock. And darn proud of it.
I am embarrassed it is zed. I really do have a life
Bumper sticker seen in Canada recently
Labour Unions Work
Someone on teevee seemed to say it could go on until next year.
Apologies for the OT but it ain’t over ’til it’s over. 33 undecided Senators on Mukasey and 17 for sure against. This could go to the wire. Please call your’n if they’re on the list (Californians: Boxer’s office says she’s leaning “heavily against.” Let’s push.) list of undecideds here, from TPM. (text)
LS @ 6
Oh my gawd. I love “Weeds”, “Californication”, “Brotherhood” and “Dexter”. But I support the strike.
nomolos @ 5
Good one! Bumper sticker seen on my car on central coast of CA in bright white & blood red:
BUSH DESERVES A THIRD TERM: PRISON.
LS @ 6
God forbid the masses have to watch reruns.
I have their backs, they are asking for a paltry sum in the big scheme of it all and are apparently greatly under appreciated by said masses.
I speak as (in reverse chronological order) a former studio exec, IBEW member, and Teamster (honest!).
The studios are being greedy pigs, and I was in finance, so I know.
I’m happy to see lots of showrunners are honoring the strike – means that the effect will be felt sooner than anticipated.
This is a good clearinghouse for strike stuff from the guild…apparently, Steve Carrell called in sick suffering from “enlarged balls.”
newspaperbrat @ 9
That’s my next bumper sticker!!
LS @ 6
I think that’s very likely. Bring hot chocolate (rum toodies?) to the New York pickters…
Laura Doty @ 7
I wish I could write Mukasey out of the script. And the rest of that dark comedy Bush cast.
Mutant Poodle @ 11
ooo thanks, Mutant Poodle good link!
Now if we could just get WalMart and hotel and eaterie workers to strike.
reposting from earlier: i love this clip from “the office” writers (who also act on the show) explaining the internet issue…

If I’m not mistaken, this is about the change in the industry from writers making money on residuals to writers not making very much money on DVDs.
It’s the residuals that kept the writers with some money coming in between series or one-time scripts.
Many more people are buying DVDs of a year of a sitcom rather than rather than watching the repeats.
I think that the writers are asking to make $.04 more on each DVD sold.
That $.04 per DVD would act as the residuals used to.
I have seen that on several times in Arkansas.
The Democratic Party needs to retap into labor. These working folks are a huge potential.
Laura @ 7
Pushed at Boxer to vote against.
I said it wasn’t because he won’t say that waterboarding is torture, nor because he won’t say that torture is illegal.
I said it was because he won’t say that the preznit isn’t above the law.
Dow -370
AP – Opposition leader Benazir Bhutto put her supporters on a collision course with President Gen. Pervez Musharraf Wednesday, urging them to defy a clampdown on protests against the U.S.-backed strongman’s emergency rule.
OT..Hell of an ad targeting Miss McConnell.
Kos
LS @ 22
AP – Oil prices stalled in their climb toward $100 a barrel Wednesday after a government report said oil inventories fell less than expected last week while refinery utilization remained flat.
And Bush tells us (foreclosers, etc.) that our economy is strong.
Boston1775 @ 18
actually, the $0.04 IS the WGA residual. Way back when, costs of distributing and manufacturing VHS (there were no DVDs) was very high, and some studios licensed it out and got 20% of the revenue. That’s the basis for current residual rates for EVERYBODY.
What’s happening now is that networks are showing their episodes on-line, with advertising, and not paying residuals, and foregoing the broadcast repeats that used to put $$ in the writers pockets, all the while saying the internet medium is too young to be burdened with residuals.
So 2 big issues – more out of DVD, and a slice of internet exploitation.
More here.
LS @ 22
Exxon is down $2.72
and gas prices jumped twenty cents from the last time I looked! $2.99 here
Boston1775 @ 18
I’m wrong.
According to the site from Mutant Poodle, the writers have dropped their request for the $.04 per DVD.
Compare: Bhutto to H.R. Clinton. In terms of leadership potential and courage.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 20
Labor made a huge difference in our get out the vote campaign here in Virginia.
OT – But I just figured out what this whole thing is with the potential presidential run of NYC Mayor Bloomberg (on the cover of this week’s Newsweek). And, the answer has something to do with Donna Edwards and others. I bet that Bloomberg is being held back there as a surprise “dark horse” outsider by the pro-Mid-East war fanatics across both parties If the Rethugs go for Ron Paul, he may be pushed forward as a Republican candidate. If the Dems put into play someone who will really threaten to bring home the troops, then Bloomberg will also be funded to run. In both cases the point is to offer a third party candidate who will assure that there will be a “pro-war” social moderate on the ticket whom “centrists” can vote for. And, he will be HUGELY funded not only by GE (NBC), and AIP*C but also the array of others who want this war to continue.
Unions built America! Aloha, Ya’ll! Here’s the article and pic of Mauna Kea’s snow…
http://www.hawaiitribune-heral…..ocal01.txt
LS @ 6
Maybe there will be more news? With some new anchors that have their heads screwed on straight? They need to fill up the hours with something…
egregious @ 30
I saw that. ;0)
CTuttle @ 32
That’s beautiful – thanks
Richmond @ 31
Bloomberg/Lieberman, Unity ‘08. The nightmare ticket.
This is one of the scariest articles I have ever read. From Huff Post, Naomi Wolf:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/…..71067.html
Oklahoma kiddo @ 29
An apt analogy… :-)
CTuttle @ 32
Musta been some fainting spells there.
Twain @ 35
It’s an awesome view, even without the snow! ;-)
The only good thing about the writer’s strike is that the writing for “Heroes” would only improve if NBC hired scab monkeys to randomly bang on keyboards.
P J Evans @ 21
Hearts to you PJ!
I’m not even sure I heard this right but
this AM Joe Scarboro said he was pleased
that some of the writers crossed the picket line to bring you “Morning Joe” ??
Naomi Wolf reminds me of Lahoma. When she speaks, I listen. I know of no better tribute.
LS @ 37
FWIW, LS, I believe Naomi first posted that here at FDL on Sunday
newtonusr @ 39
It’s the earliest that I’ve heard it in the modern era, and, hail fell at sea level in certain parts of the Isle! An extremely rare occurrence…
OT – newtonusr @ 39 -
finally saw (and replied to) the comment you left for me in epu land this morning.
OT..This could be interesting..
TPM
support from SAG and other unions is huge! We didn’t have that before. This might be a big win for us.
Arianna. Gawd this is a smart individual.
Strike. Strike. Strike!
Steve-AR @ 48
Nance was on KO (or was it Abrams?) yesterday, nice personna! Gave an excellent account of the ordeal…
LS @ 37
Is it ever.
Speaking of bumper stickers, the link above reminds me of this one:
“If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.”
dakine01 @ 45
Oh..I wasn’t online on Sunday, so I missed it. Thanks. In any case, it is hair raising.
TPM
Interesting..17..is 41 possible?
STTP in Ohio @ 53
another good one, going right next to my “give Bush a third term” one
selise @ 47
Replied there, selise.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 50
It’s nice that she’s seen the light and crossed over to our side! I remember when she first started on the Talk Circuit she was a conservative …
logic101 @ 49
Hi logic,
Do you know how most writers get health insurance?
CTuttle @ 52
The Thugs are trying to trash his service record..he gave notice that if they try it at the committee hearing he will not smile and take it.
Steve-AR @ 60
Heh, don’t mess with a Seal! ;-)
Richmond @ 31, I heard a snippet of Lou Dobbs on Larry King’s show complaining that all the presidential candidates are lousy. He thinks none of those running now will be the actual nominees. Bloomberg may be his unannounced- as-yet Superman?
Ooh, CNN’s saying the House is about to vote on ENDA!
Steve-AR @ 55
Salazar too!!! That one is key.
CTuttle @ 58
Arianna is, I think … well … brilliant. ;0)
Jane has a new thread upstairs.
Arriana was married to a conservative gooper congresscritter wasn’t she? She was all over the airwaves during the Clinton impeachment arguing that a blow job deserved the death penalty…her conversion must have been quicker that Saul on the road to Damascus.
EPU but still worth it?
Anyone else think Shawn’s mom looks like Hilary?
rwcole @ 67
Yeah, I have a hard time forgetting that too.
I did so enjoy her appearance on Colbert when she took his hand and asked him to “join us, Stephen, join the bloggers” or some such. His reply: “your touch burns me”.
bwahaha
Laura Doty @ 7
Gave Boxer a wee push!
A good way to entertain yourself during the strike while supporting writers: read a book.
Or better yet, go to one of the many websites that have screenplays available for reading.
k
Drew’s Script-O-Rama and SimplyScripts are good places to start.
