The Corporate/Bush Dog Wing of the Democratic Party - the one that our friends in the GOP/Media Complex like to portray as "reasonable" and "sensible" and "moderate" Democrats ("reasonable" meaning "rolls over for Bush and the GOP") - would very much like us to go away.
They want to be able to keep the actual Democrats like Feingold outnumbered and shackled. They want to pass their GOP buddies' Debt Peonage Bill (aka "Bankruptcy Reform") and to put Peru under the NAFTA shadow without any fuss from us. Hell, why should they care about us? They can get more money from their corporate buddies than they do from little old us.
Which is exactly why we shouldn't go away.
Oh, I'm not talking about just shutting up and being submissive ATMs for them. Or just giving up on politics altogether. Oh, no.
Here's what I'm talking about:
We'll "go away" from the DCCC and the DSCC, as they don't need our money anyway, not with their corporate sugar daddies. Instead, we'll back individual candidates, as well as outfits like DFA and BlueAmerica and Howard Dean's DNC.
Why the DNC? Because it, you will note, lags in fundraising behind the D-Trip and DSCC. The corporate donors aren't as fond of it as they are of the DCCC and DSCC, as they know that among other things, a fifty-state strategy ultimately means less reliance on corporate cash; Corporate America prefers the Democrats' central and state orgs to be weak and unable to keep individual candidates from being co-opted and corrupted. (Dean's longtime association with clean-elections groups like Public Campaign only makes them more skittish about backing him and the DNC.)
And for those who want to strike at the roots of the problem -- namely, the intertwining of the Republicans with the US media (accelerated by the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine in 1987) and the way Big Business uses their money as a blanket to smother our voices -- there is a bit of hope, and some options for action:
-- MSNBC has, after axing Donohue (who was their biggest ratings draw) and suffering a series of right-wing ratings disasters before lucking into a ratings bonanza with Keith Olbermann, finally has realized that actually obeying market demand will make them more money than will non-stop wingnut-welfare promotion of right-wing blowhards who get beat by local public-access programming: They're giving Rosie O'Donnell a show.
-- CNN and FOX and the rest will ignore it, and the print media will shove this deep inside page B83 next to the want ads, but that doesn't mean it's not big news: Brent Wilkes is going down. Wilkes, remember, is one of the key players in the huge GOP corruption machine run by such luminaries as Jack Abramoff, Tom "K Street Project" DeLay and Grover "Drown 'Em in the Bathtub" Norquist; the lurid Duke Cunningham hookers-and-bribes scandal is the very tip of this sleaze iceberg. The rule of law still exists, and is fighting back now that the Republicans have lost ground in the last year.
-- Go check out the fine folks at Public Campaign. I think you'll like what they've already done, and what they plan on doing.
-- If you live in a state where elections are happening today, go see who's on the ballot and then vote for the progressive choices. Yeah, they may be just city councilmembers now, but they can go on to become state and national leaders -- and you can determine right now who goes on to the next level. [UPDATE: Can you tell when I started working on this draft? As everyone knows, the elections were yesterday, and we did pretty well.]
Now get out there and piss off some corporatists!

To go away? GOOD LUCK!
zedalicious!
What does first post say? Zed? Christy? Jane?
PW, the election wasn’t yesterday everywhere?
But seriously, folks: Olbermann said that there will be no MSNBC show for O’Donnell on his own show tonight.
Are we saying that Bush is responsible for NAFTA?
Hey, PW!
You on fire tonight, grrrl!
I’m still finishing up comments downstairs. I KNEW there was something about Ron Paul that bothered me hugely, and now I understand!
FunnyDiva
Heh! And of course all the elections happened yesterday — though that’s another bit of good news; we got some good people into office. :-)
TexBetsy @ 1
Those things are soooo good.
First post? We say Welcome AAbshier!
If I might be a bit of a troublemaker for a bit…
Another way to get some attention is to point out that actually, progressives might have another choice in 08 than to vote for anyone the Dems run: a Ron Paul 3rd party candidacy.
Now, I think a progressive would be insanely short-sighted to vote for a Ron Paul 3rd party campaign, for a half-dozen important reasons. But it’s not entirely implausible that many might, as Greenwald has recently pointed out.
If Pelosi et al believe we might bolt for a Paul 3rd party (or that, say, 30% of us might), I think you’d see a lot more spine coming from them.
Ron Paul is leverage for us. It’s distasteful. It’s playing with fire. But maybe we need to be signaling that we just might do it…
PW this is right on the spot…
DFA does training classes for candidates and their staff, activist training and grassrooter’s. They also do Night School training, you can download the sessions from their website or purchase the CD/DVD. These training sessions are stellar. DFA also provides funds to their Dean’s Dozen candidates for each cycle and who qualifies is by DFA members recommending that candidate.
NAFTA is a Clinton thing.
AAbshier @ 5
I hope this is true. I want Rachael Maddow or David Schuster or Sam Sedar or some of our bloggers or just about anyone that is an intelligent liberal who can convince some goopers, not just enrage them.
fyi - the peru trade bill is being debated on the house floor right now (c-span1).
Rachel Maddow would be wonderful!
Let’s send some of these sugar daddy’s to Hannity, mebbe we’ll get some peace.
sugar daddy
I haven’t heard from Howard Dean in months. What’s up with that? Maybe he’s planning that when he asks for money, he will actually get it!
TexBetsy @ 16
I’ll 3rd the nomination.
Professor Foland @ 11
interesting idea, and potientially a smart strategy.
i just don’t think i could do it (vote for paul, i mean).
Professor Foland @ 11
I admit to having a pavlov’s dog response to any candidate that says “support and defend the Constitution”!!
selise @ 15
Basketball’s on in this house. And it’s not being turned off…no way, no how. It’s 3 against 1. So, tell me, when do you think they’ll vote. I’ll watch the tiny tv in the bedroom if it’s tonight.
So are we going to stop being netural on presidential candidates and start discussing their records and ACTUAL postions on the issues we care the most about?
We don’t need to endorse anyone but we can say change your ways or we will hammer you.
Professor Foland @ 11
Did you happen to read the last thread? Phoenix Woman showed his positions on a lot of issues that are beyond the pale.
Phoenix Woman @ 8
Anybody have a link to a good summary of what happened yesterday?
selise @ 20
(and also for Loo Hoo)
I know I couldn’t, for many reasons, as PW has enumerated, and others. But if it got Pelosi to move, I’d be happy to start saying I might…
Does anyone worry that the net is becoming such a thorn in the side of the legislators that they may not support net neutrality?
solai, they wouldn’t dare defeat net neutrality. How fast would they be gone?
selise @ 15
Is that Gooper asshole Dreier out front?
solai @ 22
vote is scheduled for tommorrow. three hours of debate is scheduled for tonight.
TexBetsy @ 16
*swoon* That would be mah-velous… But, Rosie would be cool too… “They’re giving Rosie O’Donnell a show.” What time slot, PW?
Well then Mr. Professor Foland….signalling that we might vote for Paul is so dishonest it reeks of something the swift-boaters might do. For progressives or even for the thinkier among us, Ron Paul is so anti-progressive to actually affect my digestion! I can’t imagine!
Professor Foland @ 11
We don’t have to do anything but sponser a poll describing Hilary’s postion on the war and Ron Paul’s to likly Dem voters. Even Penn will not be able to massage those results. Then we make sure the media gets it.
That plus we do a poll identifying the voters most informed about the issues (us ) and how many of us informed Lefties really like Hilary.
The expected decline in Lefty voter enthusaism for Hilary should correlate with just how well informed you are about Hilary.
Tweety would love to do a story about how the more Lefties Know about Hilary the less they like her!
selise - ot I looked for the vote record of yesterdays impeachment maneuverings to no avail. Do you have any idea where they post/record such votes?
I may not like Ron Paul’s positions on most things. I will say this though, he doesn’t triangulate.
newtonusr @ 29
marcy kaptur is giving them hell! she’s defending the workers of peru and the workers here (she said she “genuflects” before the gold miners in peru who just went on strike). clapping as she concludes.
shameless vote whoring…
last chance to help skippy not be in last place for the 2007 weblog awards!
we’re only 10 votes behind dave neiwert of orcinus, and you know what a rotten writer he is!!
come on, folks, vote for me!
solai @ 27
yes.
if the pols are willing to consider retroactive immunity for telcos’ law breaking, why not the gutting of net neutrality too?
Tom Cole (R-OK) was interviewed on NPR. He’s heading up the GOP congressional election effort. He claims not to be too concerned about the war in Iraq as a 2008 issue, because there is so little distance between Bush’s position and that of the Dem contenders… Most of Cole’s optimism about GOP electoral prospects seem empty, but his confidence on this point seems well founded…
Already there, sent an email when I unsubscribed from the D-trip emailing list several months ago, told them I would be sending my money to the fine folks at MoveOn.org, Blue America, and would be supporting individuals OUTSIDE of my district.
No more money for the R’s disguised as D’s.
Loo Hoo. @ 18
Chuck, Rahm, Harry, Steny, and, Nancy have effectively muzzled Howard Dean… :-(
Now that we are in serious countdown mode toward the most serious election in my lifetime, I would like to see some threads by Jane, Howie or anyone else about money. How to raise it and how to get the most bang for the buck. To me, individuals giving money to candidates or DNC is pissing in the ocean. In order to gain influence and have politicians care about what we care about the money needs to be bundled. I assume that is what “Blue America” is doing but how do we expand participation?
skippy @ 37
Got your back Skippy!
skippy @ 37
Sorry, Skippy! I’m disappointed the Lake is in Fifth… 8-(
Mr. Natural @ 32
Things Come Undone has an excellent suggestion for how to do it in a way that may be more to your taste. Exactly that sort of suggestion is why I wanted to spark the discussion…
Loo Hoo. @ 28
Did you see what Comcast(?) did to MSNBC. They put it in a different tier (or something). I won’t pretend to know all the issues. Bottom line, millions of viewers just lost access to Keith Olberman.
Yeah, they may be just city council members…
The Right-wing extremists that now control our nation were able to do so because they started by taking over city councils and schools boards in the early 80s.
it disheartens me to see progressives so dismissive of the power of local government to change things. They can, and they do. The sooner progressives learn this and start paying as much attention to city and state races as they do to the national contests, the sooner we can rid ourselves of the right-wing blight.
Japandrew @ 39
I can’t stand Tom Cole. But on this he may have a point.
TexBetsy @ 4
Yup — I’d started writing the post yesterday and forgot to update it!
Phoenix Woman @ 49
That was my second guess!
solai @ 46
No, I did not see this. Got a link?
Swing State Project has an election results roundup. Two more state Senates in Democratic control (MS & VA) Another Democratic Governor (KY). I can imagine voting for Paul on the theory that he has the right policy on Iraq and the congress would never pass any of his truly wacko ideas.
Speaking of money..Rut Roh…
Currency traders gave the dollar a thorough pounding today after a Chinese official suggested that the country could begin to diversify its huge foreign-exchange reserves.
The euro broke the $1.47 barrier before retreating a little and the pound climbed above $2.10, a value it had not reached 26 years ago. Other currencies also posted gains against the dollar.
Remarks by Cheng Siwei, vice chairman of the National People’s Congress in China — a colossal dollar investor by virtue of its $1.43 trillion in currency reserves, most of which are presumed to be denominated in dollars — helped drive the dollar lower.

Professor Foland @ 45
Plus I hate Ron Paul so if Hilary does go lower than Ron in a poll of Democratic voters who compare his and her stance on the war.
Well then Hilary’s attack machine would make sure the entire MSM is talking about Ron’s Racism. Say what you will about Hilary she will fight well…for her own intrests.
I want this guy taken out he is raising too much money Cinnamonape at late, late night thinks the GOP corporate moneybags are behind it. I agree it smells like a trap.

“We protect Egypt’s sovereignty and independence and reject any pressure and conditions, and we refuse any interference in our affairs,” Mubarak told 6,000 delegates from his National Democratic Party (NDP) in Cairo on Tuesday.

The number of Iraqis kicked out of their homes has surged 16 percent in October despite claims by the government that it has declined.
The Red Crescent, Iraq’s Red Cross equivalent, said at least 100,000 more Iraqis were forced to leave their homes in October.
Massive numbers of Iraqis are on the move inside the country in search for safety. The numbers are expected to hike as neighboring countries have shut their borders on the face of fleeing Iraqis.

“But Thompson appeared to have a reservoir of goodwill that goes deeper than his critics think. He was praised for being a true conservative, “grandfatherly,” “fatherly,” “competent,” and “personable.” He reminded several panelists of Ronald Reagan, a conservative icon.”
OK, well, now we know. Fred Thompson’s attraction for Republicans is housed in his capacity to remind them of Marcus Welby, MD.
cinnamonape @ 90
That was very interesting. They seem to have finally got Bush’s personality pegged - “stubborn, hard-headed,” etc. But it was scary that they find Thompson such a bright spot. One would hope that the more they learn about him, the dimmer he will get.

A military operation is a viable option for dealing with the Iranian nuclear threat, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Wednesday night, hours after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said his country has 3,000 centrifuges at work enriching uranium.
I want us to discuss what issues we care about the most and who right now is offering us the most of what we want. Dennis and Dodd are at the top of my list Hilary is at the bottom followed by Obama and Edwards. But I need to know more about all the canddates postions now.
I admit that I don’t know for sure who is best or worst.
But I do know that ending the war no troops left behind in Iraq and healthcare for everyone payed for with taxes are my biggest issues.

John Edwards on Iran Jan. ‘07:
Edwards: Let me be clear: Under no circumstances can Iran be allowed to have nuclear weapons. For years, the US hasn’t done enough to deal with what I have seen as a threat from Iran…..To ensure that Iran never gets nuclear weapons, we need to keep ALL options on the table. Let me reiterate — ALL options must remain on the table….
Question: ….Would you be prepared, if diplomacy failed, to take further action against Iran?….Secondly, you as grassroots person, who has an understanding of the American people, is there understanding of this threat across US?
Edwards: ….As to what to do, we should not take anything off the table….As to the American people, this is a difficult question. The vast majority of people are concerned about what is going on in Iraq. This will make the American people reticent toward going for Iran. But I think the American people are smart if they are told the truth, and if they trust their president. So Americans can be educated to come along with what needs to be done with Iran.

First, we had FEMA employees posing as reporters. Now we have a Department of Homeland Stupidity moron, posing as a “dark faced” prisoner. Of course, Julie Myers poses as competent. She did judge this costume to be the “Most Original”. Photos were taken, but they have not been released (paid by taxpayers?).
If some lefty, angry, fem blogger digital artist had posted a picture of a dark face politician, Sean Hannity would make it a national issue. But, the leading Republican Senators, have no problem with this. The hyprocrisy is almost funny. Sen. Why is anybody still talking about Iran? Al Quieda in Pakistan getting nukes and missles is my nightmare.
Given all the money we gave Pakistan they could have finnaced a huge public works project that could have built up public support, which currently they don’t have.
Instead they probably just bought more weapons from us which after Al Quieda takes over will be used on us.
Given the ties between Al Quieda and Pakistani inteligence its not the lawyers being jailed who are the threat or the oppostion political parties.
Its a coup from the inteligence guys in conjunction with Al Quieda that is the threat.
We would not even know thata coup occured until Israeli radar picks up the incoming Pakistani missles. Assuming they can reach that far. If not the Green Zone maybe?
my question for the candidates….. where are the jobs with benefits for americans?? the middle-class here has been gutted - it now takes 2 or 3 jobs to make it which leaves no room for relaxation - so folks are overworked and underpaid…. where are we headed? just asking…
selise @ 20
Isn’t it interesting that pollsters ask this question of CONSERVATIVES and CHRISTIANS all the time…enhancing their leverage over the Republican Party through fear. But you’ll be hard put to find any survey that even asks the “progressive” Democrats or independants if they might support a Third Party candidate. This despite the fact that the Green Party candidacy of Nader was likely a major influence on the 2000 election. One has to conclude that the question isn’t asked for the very reason that it WOULD influence the positions of the candidates within the Democratic Party.
But although we all know that there is a lot of surveys showing hat Conservative Christians might jump to a Third Party if Giuliani or Romney were the candidate…you have to really dig for the “implicit” data on the other side.
But here are a couple of suggestive surveys.
58% Would Support (Existence Of) Strong Third Party
Note that they wouldn’t “support” that party. But this indicates a general dissatisfaction with the stranglehold on politics of the two party system in the USA. Most feel that having more choices and, perhaps, a European style system would be better that the current mess.
Baby Boomers support a Third-Party Concept
This survey suggest that the Baby-Boom Generation are also pretty open to Third Party Candidates that reflect their views.
On the flip side, a FOX News Survey showed “interest” in Third Party Systems dropped from 56% in 1999 to 47% in 2004. Now that may be that the Third Party candidates running at those times had lost their luster…and that the Nader candidacy was felt by some to have damaged the candidacy of Kerry.
One question, though? Did the candidacy of Nader actually cause the Demcrats to respond by swinging leftward? If so, why did they go for Lieberman rather than a left-liberal candidate? Or is State Electoral bloc politics more influential?
Obama on Iran ‘04
U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama suggested Friday that the United States one day might have to launch surgical missile strikes into Iran and Pakistan to keep extremists from getting control of nuclear bombs.

By the way, Ma Cheri, now that you’re on DSL, there’s no excuse for some live-blogging of your soiree… :P
Now get out there and piss off some corporatists!

The comments of John Edwards on Iran are truly disappointing.
Do you suppose it’s another case of feeling he has to appear “tough” enough?
Things Come Undone @ 130
I agree, it’s total bullshit; but so was Iraq..If I lived in Isr**l I would be a hell of a lot more worried about Pakistan than Iran.
Suzanne @ 137
If Joe Klein can do it, so can you!
Since Daily Show is a repeat, I’m watching Bill O’Reilly. Nearly as funny. BOR says Obama has NO chance because his team limited access to him (translation..he wouldn’t appear on Fox)

Those are very unhealthy, why not some Falafel balls… :P

“So are we going to stop being neutral on presidential candidates and start discussing their records and ACTUAL positions on issues we care the most about?
We don’t need to endorse anyone but we can say “Change your ways or we will hammer you.”
Bingo! Sounds like a plan to me. :o)

Gotta be careful about someone who rings such bells. There was a chivalric and patriotic organization that made all its members swear an oath “to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, and all laws passed in conformity thereto, and to protect the states and the people thereof from all invasion from any source whatever.”
Oath of the KKK
Oh my, can it be Late Nite already?

I think you’re right Nader didn’t pull Gore leftwards. My take was always that Dems thought Nader would bring in new voters, not peel away theirs. That was his campaign line, in any case. But I’d be interested if anyone has actual information about that.
I guess it seems to me that DC politicians sort of see all internet phenomena as an undifferentiated mass. So they hear Paul raises $5MM online, for all they know, it could be those DFH’s who are always calling and annoying them. I don’t know if it’s a good strategy, or worth its risks, but if ever there were a time to actually make use of that sort of confusion, now seems like the time…

Professor Foland -
I agree with you that most of the politicians see “all internet phenomena as an undifferentiated mass.” I think they still think all blogs are basically “opinion,” and still don’t realize that many, like this one especially are thoroughly researched and fact-based. Let alone the fact that the multiple posters, with their varied backgrounds and quick ability to find errors and point them out, keep such blogs more accurate than MSM’s product. WE must continue teaching them.
Eureka Springs @ 114
Is that on tape somewhere? I was watching CSPAN live when the votes started flipping, and there was a period of about 10-15 minutes before it became clear what the Republicans were doing when we were just staring at each other (electronically) and saying WTF???

This speech at the Herzliya Conference was very disappointing. I was shifting towards Edwards (from Kucinich or Robertson) when I came across this speech about a month ago. I was concerned, as in so many things, that his views may have been taken out of context. So I go the full transcript.
Edwards Satlink Speech To Herzliya Conference, Tel Aviv
And it was actually worse than I thought. He blames Iran for just about everything that is going wrong in the Middle East and gives the US and Israel a free ride. He says that Hezbollah and Syria are puppets of Iran (and Ahmadjinedad…hey John, learn a little HISTORY). He asserts Hamas is also being supported by Iran. As is the insurgency in Iraq.
He praises Sharon as a heroic figure! He says that he wants to forcefully “engage” Iran (and by that he doesn’t mean negotiation, I’m afraid…read the context). That he believes he can bring us along, kicking and screaming, despite being bogged down in Iraq.
It’s almost as if Edwards is a Manchurian Candidate for A*P*C or something! Did he ever make such statements before this, or is this a “special speech” that he only gives to select groups?

“Free Market” indeed….
oh thank GOD. i had TWO fights today with my fellow progressives who are in the steny hoyer category.
i was beginning to think i was alone. i agree with this post 1000% and i especially love act blue- they have the integrity to actually call the people who renege on their malfeasance!
i also agree that a third party is not the answer. we need to take control of THIS one and send the neocon, isreal lobby, corporatists and wannabe jesus crispies packing.
i have decided to cut down on my itunes/unbox.com addiction and match a doller to act blue, etc for every dollar i spend on entertainment.

I think FDL has been great in this regard. I can’t think of a single candidate who hasn’t been criticized for some policy or vote at some time. I don’t think that anyone could stay on this site for any length of time and think that their favored candidate was a “saint”. They are humans, and influenced by the desire to win and curry favor from diverse groups of supporters.
Some will say different things…utterly contradictory things…to different groups and hope that they never get caught.
Others will triangulate.
And some will formulate policies that sound great but that actually have as much substance as a strato-cirrus cloud. When you actually get close to it you find it disappears in wispy nothingness.
But at least we are finding out these things before we commit, and realize that even after we make a judgement on who to support that we are still responsible for trying to get that candidate to shift to more reasonable ground. In other words, we have to work to make them “waffle”…to change their minds on an issue. A person who is impermeable to reason is actually a dangerous individual.
So actually I don’t mind people who change their positions, but that should be a clear public transformation with the reasons why they have shifted. Knowledge and understanding of situations DO change for people. But if they are saying one thing to one group, while saying or doing something else to another…well that’s utter hypocrisy…and pandering.
Ot, but…relevant; I stumbled across this on the UKTimes on Line.
I think it cuts to the chase about the primaries, and how important they are.

And Bush will also begin to reduce the troop level there…which will make it even harder for those who argue we should have a substantial contingent there to “fight Al Qaida” rather than embroil temselves in internecine Iraqi politics and civil strife.
But wait! Isn’t Al Qaida practically a non-factor anymore? And why couldn’t the Iraqis deal with this? Is their army only there to support one or the other side in the sectarian conflicts?
But given the “Iranian drumbeat” [note that Edwards speech to the Herzliya Conference was way back in January…just as Bush and Cheney were starting the whole “Iran is meddling” propaganda] it really is going to be hard for the main Democratic candidates who support a “get touch” bullying approach to Iran to actually pull out most forces from the region. They couldn’t bully Iran without them.

A lot of folks hereabouts seems to think the solution is the Bush-Cheney approach…back Musharraf in his coup.
I think that the solution is actually the opposite. People like Benazair Bhutto and the popular cricket player Imran Khan had massive popular support. They appealed to the same “audience” that the Islamists were trying to lure…the young, the poor and he aspiring Middle Class. Musharraf, the military and the feudal landowners and big businessmen were actually driving people into the Islamist camp because there was no alternative. In fact, it’s secularist parties that have the upper hand in elections. Islamist parties are marginal in Pakistan. recall that Bhutto won the last two Democratic elections in Pakistan, once after she’d been thrown out already for accustations of corruption. The only way AQ would be able to take power, I sspect is by an internal military coup. An unpopular dictator, dependant on military support, is a prescription for “replacement.
But I’ve been saddened that people who assert they are “progressives” are so willing to abandon the Human Rights Activists and legal structure in Pakistan because of the fear that Al Qaida will get the nukes. In fact, supporting the status quo will actually move things faster to such a situation. Internal military coups are a lot more unpredictable than democracies.
I think it’s not so much a matter of too little difference between bush and the top democratic contenders on FUTURE policies for Iraq, that will hammer bush and the GOP (and they WILL be lumped together, and they damned well SHOULD be lumped together, taking a lesson from the republicans who sucessfully garbed Al Gore in Monica’s dress.) because what is driving that is the simple fact that there IS no good solution to what bush and the repubs and some democrats created, but if Tom Cole, or anyone ELSE (ahem, Senator Clinton…) thinks, with what is coming down the pike, that the voters will ONLY be concerned with the future of Iraq, as shitty and gnarly as it is going to be, and will somehow forget who dragged us into the clusterfuck, then I have a bloody, expensive, and unending war to remind them of.
Don’t forget, corporate america has a large dog in this fight, and they are about at the point that they don’t care a fig about protecting george bush’s legacy-ass.
I think Big Oil has been eating the ppb increase in order to protect bush and the goopers from pump-pissoff, but push is coming to shove, and if the GOP punjabs see bush dragging THEM down to perdition, they will help build the barbecue pit on the white house lawn and invite americans, one and all, to have a turn on the spit.
The market is twitching around like a blowfly on a hot turd, and the dollar is, too. They bounce some, but the overall track, in inverse ratio to the price of oil (which is a hair away from breaking the psychological barrier of $100 ppb.) is down.
You guys read that TimesOnLine link I put up at #54. The writer didn’t talk about economics, but his point was well made; it was basically:
“We aint seen nuthin’ yet.”
And I think he’s right as a snake. And that is one reason why I’m scared shitless of nominating Hillary Clinton. It has NOTHING to do with the fact that she’s a woman, and practically everything to do with the fact that she is, and has to be, with her record, soft on Iraq as an issue in this election, and that will be bad enough if Iraq stays at the same level of “stability” (8 more of our troops killed in the past two days, and dozens more Iraqis…) but if, as there is every possibility of happening, it worsens, and if we nominate Clinton, the republican candidate will have one hell of a free pass on what bush and the GOP have wrought.
And we cannot win this election if that happens.
The impeachment movement has already started this.

Kucinch is the only candidate who has spent his life fighting for progressive values. Even if you think that one of the h/o/e’s are inevitable, for purely tactical reasons progressives should support Kucinich. He is the only one who can give progressives any leverage in the final selection and policy positions.
