Steve-AR @ 72

More on Edwards and the “Spitzer Plan”
(snip)
Immigration policy experts on both sides of the debate say they’re puzzled by Edwards’ stance, which appears to hinge on blurring the distinction between state and federal powers.

“He supports licenses as part of a path to citizenship. He doesn’t support the Spitzer plan because it doesn’t include a path to citizenship,” said Edwards’ deputy campaign manager Jonathan Prince in an e-mail referring to the New York governor’s plan that prompted the question that flummoxed Clinton.

“That’s not a rational position — Eliot Spitzer couldn’t ever offer somebody a path to citizenship,” said Margie McHugh, the Co-Director of the National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy
…

Seems simple enough to me. Edwards was clearly considering how the federal government immigration plan might work and was simply saying the Spitzer plan wouldn’t work as a national policy.

Clearly immigration needs more thought and discussion by everyone.

“…the scary brown people code language” seems to be in the ear of some hearers, but not necessarily in the hearts of those who oppose licensing people who are here illegally. As a life-long liberal who’s against the licensing idea, I really detest this nasty racism crap that’s being flung about. Disagreeing with those who favor licensing those who are here illegally does not make that person a racist, nor does it mean s/he is reacting to code words. What utter (and utterly offensive) nonsense.

Give them enough time and they’ll drown in the rain…never knowing what went wrong. These folks are not smart.

That’s alright, the head of the Kentucky Republican Party claimed VICTORY because they won two down ticket races yesterday. they lost the Governor/Lieutenant Gov Office. They lost Attorney General, Treasurer, and Auditor. They won Secretary of State and Agriculture Commissioner. VICTORY!

Bush is going to get rung-up for War Crimes, including Torture - just like Rummy.

Go ahead, vote for Torture - join Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, and other future Evil Villians of the Earth.

The US 1996 War Crimes Law

(a) Offense.— Whoever, whether inside or outside the United States, commits a war crime, in any of the circumstances described in subsection (b), shall be fined under this title or imprisoned for life or any term of years, or both, and if death results to the victim, shall also be subject to the penalty of death.
(b) Circumstances.— The circumstances referred to in subsection (a) are that the person committing such war crime or the victim of such war crime is a member of the Armed Forces of the United States or a national of the United States (as defined in section 101 of the Immigration and Nationality Act).
(c) Definition.— As used in this section the term “war crime” means any conduct—
(1) defined as a grave breach in any of the international conventions signed at Geneva 12 August 1949, or any protocol to such convention to which the United States is a party;
(2) prohibited by Article 23, 25, 27, or 28 of the Annex to the Hague Convention IV, Respecting the Laws and Customs of War on Land, signed 18 October 1907;
(3) which constitutes a violation of common Article 3 of the international conventions signed at Geneva, 12 August 1949, or any protocol to such convention to which the United States is a party and which deals with non-international armed conflict; or
(4) of a person who, in relation to an armed conflict and contrary to the provisions of the Protocol on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Mines, Booby-Traps and Other Devices as amended at Geneva on 3 May 1996 (Protocol II as amended on 3 May 1996), when the United States is a party to such Protocol, willfully kills or causes serious injury to civilians.
