Why is the DCCC getting involved in Democratic primary races?
Today a story in Roll Call shows the DCCC up to their old Rahmish tricks again in Michigan, subtly attempting to tilt a hotly contested local race in favor of their Insider candidate. Blue America members in Michigan have asked us to stay out of the primary between Nancy Skinner and Gary Peters. One of them is likely to beat rubber stamp Republican incumbent Joe Knollenberg next year. But first the residents of this suburban Detroit district have to choose their candidate. They have two good choices. Last year, in the best a Democrat has ever done against Knollenberg– and with no help from the DCCC– Nancy Skinner held him down to 52%. Nancy spent $400,000 and Knollenberg spent $3,105,161. Imagine if Rahm Emanuel would have directed some of the millions he wasted on reactionary Blue Dogs like Tammy Duckworth (IL), Christine Jennings (FL), John Cranley (OH) and Ken Lucas (KY) and used just a fraction of it to help Skinner! We would have had another vote for SCHIP and for ending the war, one of them a policy Emanuel even supports.
[]
But here’s where it got hairy; here’s where the DCCC monkeys around.
According to this survey, portions of which were obtained by Roll Call, Knollenberg’s lead over his likely challenger, state Lottery Commissioner Gary Peters (D), was at 7 points– 42 percent to 35 percent– a 5-point drop from the advantage the incumbent held in April.
Knollenberg’s 7-point lead turned into a 7-point deficit after respondents were read both a push question characterizing his position on SCHIP, and the Democratic and Republican arguments for and against the program.
What makes Gary Peters the “likely challenger?” It sounds very much to me that Van Hollen is attempting to do exactly what Emanuel tried to do in CA-11 last year when he parachuted in an Ellen Tauscher Blue Dog (Steve Filson) to challenge anti-war grassroots Jerry McNerney. California voters told Emanuel and the DCCC to go to hell and, while many of Emanuel’s horrible candidates lost around the country– while others, like Heath Shuler, the 3 creeps in Indiana and Tim Mahoney routinely vote for Bush’s agenda– McNerney is now an anti-war congressman. Grassroots activists in Michigan tell me Skinner has at least a 50-50 chance to come out of this on top.
One Nancy Skinner advocate in the district just voiced the same kind of frustration with Van Hollen that so many people have felt about Emanuel. “It would have been nice if they had polled Joe against both Gary and Nancy, but they’ve obviously picked their guy and are not staying out of it like they should be — and as they promised. Maybe they’re afraid they’d find out that Nancy actually has more support and name recognition around the district. Joe was even leading Gary in this poll until they threw SCHIP into the question. I would have loved to see where Nancy would have polled with and without SCHIP.”
It’s not a race we’re going to get involved in, but it isn’t the DCCC’s job to get involved in this race any more than it is the Al Wynn/Donna Edwards race.
Maybe the DCCC should focus on cleaning up their Frontline list? When you give money to the DCCC, that’s where your money goes, and by any measure it’s one of the most regressive, anti-choice, anti-gay, pro-war, pro-corporate candidate lists around.

Hail, muse Jane!
just don’t call me late for dinner…
hi jane!
Hello?
EPU:
Al Wynn is a cosponsor of Kucinich’s impeach cheney resolution. what do you think of them apples?
Hello, Jane!
My advice: Skip the D-Trip and the DSCC — they’re loaded with corporate cash anyway, they don’t need our money. Give to the DNC itself (which the corporations are largely snubbing because they don’t want a Fifty-State Strategy) or to Blue America.
(And a quick O/T note: Conservatives, bastions of morality.)
do-si-do @ 5
*faints*
The DCCC will get no money from me! And I told them so last time they called.
Kunnich/Klien!
Ya know, we may now have four parties in the US, not two.
Progressives
Insiders/DCCCers
Koolaid Drinkers
Other/Libertarian/conservative not batshit crazy.
Hey, have some fun making up your own party labels. It’s fun!
Speaking of the Donna Edwards/Al Wynn race . . .
putting on tinfoil hat
Could it be that the drama on the House floor was timed by Steny to derail the last thread, where Jane noted “We’re $16,500 away from meeting the $100,000 goal we set for fundraising for Donna Edwards to counter the influence Nancy Pelosi and establishment Democrats give to Al Wynn with their incumbency protection racket.”?
taking off tinfoil hat
Nah, I didn’t think so either.
Still, giving to Donna looks really good after watching that debacle. Tell ‘em Steny sent you.
do-si-do @ 10
lol! yeah, i think your right.
Teddy shared this petition Sunday evening. It’s going to the DCCC.
Some of us in NH are a mite pissed at the DCCC in their support of Shaheen and their concomitant distain of Buckey. I was under the impression that they were supposed to distance themselves until a candidate emerged.
I also believed in Democracy at one time, oh and justice and the tooth fairy and santa.
do-si-do @ 10
fixed. h/t PW link above. :P
It’s astounding. Howie is expert at debunking the Emanuel myth of 2006. He needs to write a book.
Jane, I understand why you’re not getting involved in this race, but hopefully just posting this will help Nancy out a bit.
If anyone is so inclined, help her counter the DCCC’s meddling by donating to her campaign. Her website is http://www.skinnerforcongress.com or you can go directly to ActBlue http://www.actblue.com/page/helpskinnerwin. We’d like to get her first quarter off to a good start.
From http://blogs.usatoday.com/onde…..s-re.html:
House tied in knots over resolution to impeach Cheney
Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, is trying to impeach Vice President Cheney for what he describes as “high crimes and misdemeanors” before the invasion of Iraq.
Right after the proposal was read on the House floor this afternoon, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer stepped forwarded and tried to convince lawmakers to table the bill.
“Impeachment is not on our agenda. We have some major priorities. We need to focus on those,” Hoyer told Fox News.
Update at 3:39 p.m. ET: We thought that the vote to table was over — the clock said 0:00 — but lawmakers are still switching things around and Kucinich is within a few votes of getting his bill to come up for a vote.
Update at 3:43 p.m. ET: At least 149 Republicans have voted in favor of considering the impeachment resolution. Hoyer’s motion, which would have blocked a vote, looks like its going to fail by at least 31 votes.
Update at 3:53 p.m. ET: The 15-minute vote began at 2:53 p.m. ET. It’s been an hour, and they’re still voting. The tally stands at 170-242 right now. Hoyer needed 218 votes to push the bill off the agenda. He’s 72 votes short.
Update at 4:02 p.m. ET: Hoyer’s motion failed 251-162. The House is now voting on whether to vote on whether the resolution should be sent to the Judiciary Committee.
Update at 4:25 p.m. ET: The vote to decide to vote (yes, you read that correctly) just ended. By a 218-194 margin, the House has to vote on whether to send the resolution to the Judiciary Committee. That’s happening right now.
Update at 4:30 p.m. ET: Perhaps we should pause to explain. When most Republicans unexpectedly — and on orders of GOP leadership, the AP is reporting — switched sides and voted against tabling the measure, they essentially forced Democrats to keep talking about it on the floor. Tabling the measure would have killed it.
Debate over Cheney’s impeachment is in direct opposition to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s wishes. She has repeatedly said an impeachment of Cheney or President Bush is off the table. Thus, failing to table this measure is a essentially a jab in Pelosi’s ribs.
“We’re going to help them out, to explain themselves,” Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, told the AP of the impeachment’s supporters. “We’re going to give them their day in court.”
Update at 4:32 p.m. ET: The House just voted, 218-194, to send the resolution to the Judiciary Committee. That should end today’s debate — but it does keep the resolution at least technically alive.
And speaking of elections, if you live in Virginia please VOTE for state senate and state rep. Turnout is the key factor for these races.
Because there aren’t national races the turnout is typically light, and the loyal goopers will do their part. Let’s change the balance of power, shall we?
Polls are open til 7:00pm. Plenty of time for supper and voting. And if you live near Fairfax you have the special privilege of booting Tom Davis’ wife out of the state senate. Please vote for Chap Petersen-D for senate.
And if you have already voted, please think about which friends and neighbors you can call to ask them to vote. There’s still time!
This has been an unpaid political announcement from egregiousBlue.
mui @ 16
I think he’s working on writing a few political obituaries.
What surprises me is that they still surprise me with their arrogance and stupidity. Their ability to piss me off knows no bounds.
Sorry, Jane! — Posted that last into the wrong thread. Mods, please feel free to remove this post and my @ 18.
Thank you so much for this post! For those in Michigan who would like to support Nancy Skinner, there is an event with Nancy and Randi Rhodes this Saturday -
http://www.skinnerforcongress.com/
Hoyer, what a tool……..
Dee @ 23
Thanks, Dee!
Come on, Firepups, show Nancy some love!
They keep sending me dunning “surveys”. I answer them all, and then in the “would you like to contribute” section I tell them to go to hell, I’m only giving DIRECTLY to candidates of my choice, since they treated Ned Lamont so shabbily!
do-si-do @ 5
I think he’s trying desperately to save his ass.
well, this (dccc primary support of conservatives and incumbents) was something several commenters asked chris van hollen about when he visited here in may. looks like i should have payed more attention to his lack of a response (at least i didn’t see one – if there is one, i hope to be corrected).
Gurney Joe Lieberman just on MSMBC – he has aged dramatically on this first anniversary of his nefarious Independent campaign to save his sorry Senate ass from the extraordinary Ned Lamont.
nomolos @ 14
Sorry for the correction but the group dealing with Shaheen over Buckley would be the Senate committee, not the House.
Hmmm. @ 22
Don’t be sorry: we needed it.
dakine01 @ 30
Thanks. it is still the DLC though (?)
do-si-do @ 5
say “thank you” to donna edwards.
best way to do it? click here, and get your credit card out *g*
do-si-do @ 5
I think Al is trying to steal some of Edwards’ progressive cred. He knows that Kucinich’s resolution won’t go anywhere, so it’s a win-win for him.
Peterr @ 20
You just made me crack a smile.
nomolos @ 32
Maybe DLC or maybe just Insider’s Club
I believe what we’ve got is a “don’t throw me into the briar patch…” Conyers now has an Impeachment Resolution, correct me if I’m wrong, but, doesn’t that clear out much of the Unitary Executive Privilege hubris… Hmmm…???
Another note:
The Michigan Dem Party is no better than the DCCC — maybe worse. Nancy showed them that the district could be won and they decided to shove her aside and “let a man finish the job.” Well, in talking to everyday voters, not party insiders, there’s still a lot of support for her and people are really pissed off that the party decided to get behind Peters instead of helping her finish the job.
Gary is raising money from large donors, but where it counts will be in the voting booth. Nancy showed last time that she can win and the gender factor will be a big differentiator.
Highlighting something from Howie’s post and above:
~~~Last year, in the best a Democrat has ever done against Knollenberg– and with no help from the DCCC– Nancy Skinner held him down to 52%. Nancy spent $400,000 and Knollenberg spent $3,105,161.~~~
selise @ 28
Nope — no response that I noted either, despite several very well phrased requests from different FDL regulars.
In re-reading it, though, this caught my eye from Howie:”The DCCC is different from Blue America. They just want Democrats– good, bad and indifferent. If we didn’t have all kinds, Republicans would still control the House today. The DCCC has a role to play. I believe that under CVH it will be a more even-handed role than it has been in the recent past. We’ll have to see.”
I’m guessing we’re seeing the answer.
i wonder when/if he will be coming back to explain what he thinks he’s doing.
I’m really sorry Jane but this is about
as interesting as cottage cheese~
Well, I’m sure learning TONS about the inner workings of the political machine that is DC, thanks to FDL.
gtg pups. thanks for learning this childrens.
Valley Girl @ 27
Donna scared the shit out of him in’06..his progressive score has gone from 85% to 96%..he came to the Jeebus to late to save himself..he’s gone.
Here is one vote for Howie, Jane and cottage cheese.
the motion to impeach today~
CTuttle @ 37
Different briar patch than I saw, but maybe a better one. Maybe Boehner just got meta-played in a big big way. Or, maybe everybody involved knew exactly what was happening. Everyone involved except DK has a face-saving explanation for their actions so far.
three.
fran @ 51
It was liveblogged in the comments of the previous thread.
FunnyD
I just went over and read Howie’s extended post on this at DWT.
And, with the DCCC making a choice between an xx who already nearly beat Knollenberg, and an xy who is new to the challenge, and choosing the xy, I had to wonder:
Is there some sexism going on here?
Valley Girl @ 56
Ding, ding, ding! Give that girl a prize!
selise @ 45
You (and others) might want to drop by the DCCC “contact us” page and ask them directly about how they choose which primaries to get involved in.
fran @ 46
Thank you for such a helpful comment.
And, thank you for sharing.
So was that impeachment thing just another instance of me getting my hopes up for nothing?
As far as I can tell it’s not even getting ANY MSM coverage.
Valley Girl @ 56
At least insofar as most of the ol’ boy network is xy!!
The DCCC seems to have some questions to answer vis a vis its REAL agenda….Looks like they’ve got a very limited, probably extremely self-serving view of the “right” kind of democratic candidates. They may be playing a long term strategy–don’t want no uppity women getting elected on their own merits and not beholden to the Party Power Structure.
Dis.Gusting.
FunnyD
its real agenda
not it’s real agenda
I really do know the difference, honest!!!
SharonRB @ 57
Tell the little lady what she’s won, Don Pardo . . .
Sure thing: it’s an apron, a wooden spoon, and a cookie sheet!
The Dem boyz say they don’t do sexism. don’t do sexism. don’t do sexism. don’t do sexism. Oh, yeah.
Funnydiva2002 @ 61
That may also play into the not wanting to play nice with Dean’s 50 state strategy. folks who gain office not beholden to the powers are not as easily manipulated
Sufilizard @ 60
Coverage starting now. Only time will tell if it helps Conyers get what he needs.
Sufilizard @ 60
Well … maybe they are having to give it some thought … rather than just jumping on the air to say: “oh, those silly dems, they’re at it again, pay no attention.”
I hope Nancy gets the support and wins, but it will be nice if she stayed with the one that help her unlike McNeary. He must now be getting his message from DCCC and not the locals.
jo6pac
dakine01 @ 64
Ah-yup. Huge reason for the net- and grass roots and true progressives to push back HARD. The more of this crap I see from the Democrats, them more I think it’s time to get more viable 3rd-party or truly independent candidates to light a fire under them.
FunnyD
Another blast from that CVH chat here last May:
I’m guessing Howie’s not pleased with what he’s seeing since May.
Forward! …into the past. (With AP)
Debate on Cheney impeachment averted
We’re going through DCCC manipulation in the AK-01 US House race up here. There are three candidates who have filed for the Democratic Primary (August, 2008) to run against each other to run against Don Young. Diane Benson, who ran against Young in 2006, and got over 40% of the vote – the closest anyone had come to Young in almost 20 years – on 8% of the money Young spent, filed first for 2008.
Then Jake Metcalfe left his post as Democratic Party chair to run against Benson in the primary. He had withheld party funds from Benson last year, helping to assure she wouldn’t win. But she got close enough for him to decide he might be able to get himself some DCCC money and support.
But DCCC rebuffed Metcalfe, and instead partnered with a fairly biased pollster, Ivan Moore. Moore, who at the time he partnered with DCCC to poll for former Alaska House Minority Leader Ethan Berkowitz, had already set up an Act Blue page for Berkowitz.
So, up here, we’ve got a guy who is fundraising online for a candidate partnering with that same candidate and DCCC to come up with a poll that – surprise, surprise – shows Berkowitz beating both Benson and Metcalfe in a three-way primary.
This kinky relationship has been questioned in the local print media and on progressive talk radio.
Berkowitz, the DCCC favorite in this race, refuses to discuss impeachment, the morality of the Iraq War or the efficacy of going to war against Iran – “That would be an issue for the Senate to determine, not the US House,” is what he told me on a call-in program when I asked.
so, perhaps a *reluctant* (by some reports) conyers can play it this way: “oh, gosh, I don’t want to do it, but I have to give it a hearing … and btw, IF we had any of the production from the WH that i’ve asked for 9 times now we’d be too busy … oh dear, oh my.”
Randi Rhodes says it’s all good. i agree. it’s an opening we didn’t have just 3 hours ago. i cannot believe i happened to be at home and online!!!
Ed*ard Teller @ 71
ET- I hope you have emailed Howie with this information.
Peterr @ 58
excellent idea… i think i will do just that. *g*
I think supra-cranial lightbulbs may be slowly winking on all around DC. It may take the R’s a few hours to figure out their next moves.
(ot to Valley Girl: You are on it today sister. Here’s a piece of pie from DuPars.)
selise @ 74
Course, so you don’t get blown off, the way Stoller did by Pelosi, you need to say as a preface “As a long time and continuing supporter of the DCCC, let me ask…”
KagroX’s take on the impeachmetn maneuvers this afternoon. For those who were as confused as I was.
demi @ 76
Oh, yummy. Lemon meringue, please.
Jane!
Good to see you up and kickin’!
Corporate Democrats don’t like uppity progressives – they are certainly not interested in any threat to their incumbency.
A’course, if they’d actually act on democratic principles, that wouldn’t be a problem, would it?
VG,
Howie knows more about Alaska politics than anyone out there with a progressive blog. He’s aware. I’ve been so busy covering GOP political corruption here, that I haven’t followed through on some info on this he encouraged me to send him, so maybe it’s time to get back on that. It is a LONG WAY to the August 2008 Dem primary in AK.
My stint this morning on Talk of Alaska about trial blogging is up for podcasting or listening now at the Alaska Public Radio Network site.
VG: You deserve it. On it’s way. And, a coffee, perhaps?
Valley Girl @ 77
can you think of an opening for me that wouldn’t require that i actually lie? there’s already too much deceit going on in our political process, the idea of adding to it gives me hives.
diogenes @ 80
fixed it for you.
P J Evans @ 78
thanks!
selise @ 83
“As a long time follower of the work that the DCCC has done on behalf of Democratic candidates….”
demi- course. Or iced tea, depending on the weather.
The way the political system works, you have to pay to play..I don’t like it but that is the way it is..we can can yell “unfair” complain about the need for public financing of elections..and keep yelling as they march us behind the wire.
We have got to win with the hand we are dealt..12 months to go..out of all of the tens of thousands of people who read the four sites associated with “Blue America”, only 2213 could spare at least one $5.00 donation? Maybe I am reading the numbers wrong.
Steve-AR @ 88
Unfortunately, Steve, although I agree with you, one problem I have is the same that many other supporters of Blue America have. Long term unemployment limits the available options for cash.
Valley Girl @ 86
that works! thanks!
SharonRB @ 38
Is that primary today?
selise @ 84
Quite right- it’s better!
dakine01 @ 89
I totally agree..and that unfortunately applies to many people who post here and I thought quite a while before I posted my comment. But I still suspect that there are quite a few people who do a lot of bitching who could give one $5.00 donation to show appreciation for the effort that Jane, John, Digby and Howie et al expend on our behalf. Not a popular sentiment but there it is.
Funnydiva2002 @ 68
I couldn’t agree more. While I consider it pretty important to get a Democrat in office, there are two other items that are absolutely crucial: the first is a grassroots effort at rebuilding the progressive party from the bottom up, and the second is to continue the same pressure on the Beltway KoolAid folks (party affiliation here hardly matters once they’ve drunk this stuff) to do the right thing (until they’re overwhelmed by the grassrooots coming up behind them)…
dakine01 @ 89
And, Howie never tries to guilt trip anyone into making a contribution.
Quotes from threads:
~~~I don’t want anyone to ever feel pressured.
I don’t ever want to pressure anyone to give more than they feel comfortable giving
People give what they can give and I have found the FDL crowd to be super-generous. I don’t ever want to pressure anyone to give more than they feel comfortable giving~~
Elliott @ 85
In the coming election, Republics will use the lack of impeachment as a reason to throw out the GoAlongOCrats and retake control of Congress.

I made a graphic a long time back, hoping that Howie would use it for a “$5 value menu” campaign.
He never used it. He, health foodie that he is, was probably just too grossed out by my concept:

Hmmm. @ 106
The White House has been acting as if Congress was still in the hands of the Republicans. So has Congress. Until now!!! YAY!!!
Interesting you say “the right kind…” Peters’ campaign slogan is “the right kind of change.” Huh? Is that opposed to the “left kind of change” like Nancy would bring? What’s the hidden meaning of that slogan — the word “right” just doesn’t make sense for a Dem.
jo6pac @ 67
Nancy isn’t one to back down — she sticks to her convictions and stands up for what she believes in.
Joe Klein’s conscience @ 91
No — it’s not until August — we have a long way to go. Peters declared in August and Nancy just made it official on the 16th, although everyone knew she was going to run. Of course, the party (and maybe Gary) went around telling everyone he was the only one running, so he got lots of early endorsements before she even declared. It sucks all around. And some of the elected officials who endorsed him have told her if they had known she was running they wouldn’t have done so — they were told he was it and they still support her.
Just returned a DCCC mailer requesting a donation.
Told them I’ve had it with the gutless dems and that I’d consider donating when they consider growing a spine.
“McNerny is now an anti-war Congressman”– not the last I’d heard, when he’d flipped to the dark side and endorsed “the surge is working” BS. He also came out strongly for the Feds to do heavy-handed raids against medical marijuana sites in Calif. when 80% of the public (incl. a majority of RePukes!) supports the state decriminalization laws.
He replaced one of the most reactionary & corrupt RePukes in Congress (R. Pombo, an odious turd) but is hardly a guiding light of any “progressive” views.
I saw a D. Edwards speech on one of these sites not long ago (maybe C&L) & was truly impressed but what’s to stop her from flipping & supporting the elite once she’s elected like McNerny or the other phony sell-outs?
I do agree that spitting in Princess Nancy, Rahm & DiFi’s champagne bowl would be fun, nonetheless.
Valley Girl @ 73
And what about Emily’s List???? Diane would be just the sort of candidate they’d be proud of!
Hmmm. @ 106
Yeah we get levee upgrades in Sacramento! Finally!
Did Doolittle finally cave?
